start um i'm going to give you a quick introduction to today's topic um let me show you this so we're talking about streaming right whoops my chair there are so many streaming services now that actually i think it's hard to keep up to date with all the new releases right the new series the new films we've got netflix hbo disney apple hulu hoopla great names bbc right prime video and many more but of course you have to subscribe to each one so how do you you know which one do you choose how do you subscribe to all of these it's difficult right it's also very easy to become addicted to all of the wonderful tv series and films on offer many of them right are making their own films right apple making their own films um the bbc of course making their own films disney putting their own films and series out and the quality is just getting better and better so there is a danger that we um waste our lives sorry spend our lives now waste our lives watching these great tv series i mean now and again yes but it's the addiction so in this lesson we're going to learn the vocabulary and phrases right to talk fluently on this topic i want to begin actually with a question for you and i asked this to my facebook group the other day and in fact also to the youtube channel by the way if you're interested in joining the facebook group right it's called keith's mastermind community it's just for ielts speaking um find it on facebook come and join the group come and join us we've got i think 35 6 000 people now um it's very active there's a lot of people sharing their experiences their ideas we're doing a lot of idioms practice practice lately a big shout out to sophia who started that idea of an idiom a day so we're doing lots of practice with those which is great to see and i think it's a very supportive community so do do come and join us so i posted this question right yesterday which tv series do you enjoy watching well i'm going to share some ideas with you but let's see you guys in the um in the chat box tell me what you think and we'll share a few of your ideas right let's have a look so we've got rtm if i can click you lost wow that's an oldie rtm that is a really audio and probably the most confusing series ever right i think they made it up as they went along it made no sense at all um we've got over here is this 10 i think it's 10 um i'm waiting for y women kill never have i ever i don't know those taiym loves a series called friends gosh another oldie friends [Music] cnn news from bengali well okay kind of a series not exactly a series but osman enjoys watching thrilled and comedy series now i know what you mean but instead of saying thrilled osman we would say thriller like the michael jackson song thriller right i enjoy watching thriller and comedy series or thrillers as a noun as well nice great aziza says sherlock is my favorite right sherlock holmes right the brilliant one with um cumberbatch benedict bin says netflix right well that covers all the tv series right you get so many on there i wonder which ones you like um [Music] we've got hearthshift says dark right another one for sherlock holmes quite a few here um what else have we got jerome says the crown absolute classic i mean i'm not a monarchist by any means but i found that a really interesting interesting historical perspective on the royal family really interesting we've got the kapil the kapil sharma show a great comic show nice brilliant hoang likes the big bang theory ah with sheldon right breaking bad yeah breaking bad another quite quite an old one now going back quite a bit i guess um and then osman says i like watching better call soul right interesting behind her eyes i started watching that it was quite scary kind of psychological thriller it was good though this is one i've never actually watched loie and blacklist it's on my list to watch but i've not actually seen it yet and then there's the mentalist right quite good the mentalist quite good i quite like it i've watched one or two um it's actually on tv here in uh in spain would you believe it right so different tv series um now then what i'm gonna do is hey what am i gonna do i'm gonna share with you that we've got actually now let me move on i'm gonna skip over that i'm gonna share with you a short video right um and just sharing some of the things that the facebook group crowd wrote about tv series and my comments about it just for a couple of minutes i'm going to share this with you and you can see what are the popular series and what i think about them right let's watch this it's only a few minutes but i think it could be quite quite interesting if i can find it where are we tv series this is the one here we go tv series here we go then um friends i can't believe it people still watch friends wow breaking bad yet very very popular money heist i love money heist brilliant i love thrillers very very nice um din huang loves all disney cartoons how old are you din huangdong another one for friends hazel you like friends really i guess your stress disappears and your mind refreshes that's a bit strange your mind refreshes you mean it refreshes your mind brooklyn 999 cracks me up brilliant love it master chef uk says divya very interesting series i'm a big fan of cooking 2. cavi goes for sherlock holmes i love watching it multiple times me too i assume you're talking about the latest one with um camerabacks and uh the other bloke emen says la casa de papel brilliant that's money heist full of suspense the x-files that's going back a long time mad sunny how old are you you might be older than me and then we've got a yang says the vina de con the blockbuster series from vietnam sounds very interesting great shotgun goes for friends really i am surprised all these people like friends grey's anatomy that was very big the big bang theory yuki also likes sorry yuko likes the big bang theory maybe some people say i look like sheldon hmm not too sure tam games of game of thrones not that old but not that new stranger things says q my daughter's been watching stranger things lots of it there's another one mister like sherlock holmes what else have we got friends again come on friends again can't believe it gizelle has been binge watching modern family me too one of my favorite comedies love it um what else have we got avioraj mind your language now that is really old that's 1980s um and it's very very dated cantor likes hercules me too i think of course the sushi the david suge version of course you've got the book and the cd brilliant i actually find agatha christie is a great way to study english and other languages if you read the translation any others we've got um peaky blinders talini a man or a woman after my own heart um i love the peaky blind it's absolutely classic brilliant set in the the mid country of england says great it sounds like one of those bollywood films or series which i love because people start dancing singing and then shooting and then it's really funny all these things happen at once what else have we got phil says only fools and horses if you understand that you'll get a monkey minus two ponies in your ielts only phil's and horses is a british comedy program quite old as well and that's cockney reining slang if anyone can work that out do let me know something to do with money i think what else have we got money heist again i'm going to go straight down um guriv likes cid crime patrol all of those crime things why not emma the only series i watch the most on this earth is english speaking success oh emma you're a darling i'm gonna stop there come on emma if that was on netflix can you imagine great very interesting right how how popular some of the older series are and i understand actually i understand why people like friends even though i'm not a big fan and i think it's because partly it's quite easy the sitcom genre is very good for learning language and picking up very conversational english right i guess um because it's very much you know young people young people 30s talking about their their life their everyday life very interesting okay so listen let's jump straight in to have a look um at some vocabulary to talk about this topic so let me share with you um streaming tv series so i guess streaming is a key word and i think we looked at this last week right because we talked about social media streaming live video and the idea that well streaming video streaming the idea is that it's it's it's video that is happening live as you watch it um and you can access it in many different places so streaming media we're talking about netflix um youtube disney all of those we mentioned before compared to or in contrast to broadcast media which is one way broadcast right so the broadcast it's at a set time and a fixed time and you can only watch at that time so television radio right our broadcast media right so for example let's put in the examples radio television [Music] streaming media could be of course internet it will include things like netflix and things like that i mean you could put youtube up there right as well so we can talk about streaming media broadcast media video on demand is another common expression and again this refers to things like netflix where you can access a video or a series any time you want you don't have to wait until three o'clock when it's published like on tv yeah it's whenever you want so any video like on netflix or on a course like on udemy the courses are video on demand mo i think all of the courses you can access anytime choose any video any time you want that is video on demand right so that's basically watching a video or a series if you like whenever you want whenever you demand right basically i demand now then you get it that's that's what the demand comes from so your examples there i mean netflix uh udemy i'll put because all of their courses are video on demand um we've got then the verb to subscribe right as a verb to subscribe is to pay you know well yes normally you pay no you can have free subscription can't you it can be free but it's when you sign up to join something normally paid for so for netflix disney bbc you have to well bbc no netflix disney apple you have to subscribe and pay on a monthly basis right so you usually usually pay on a monthly basis [Music] to access the service right that's normally what we say the noun is a subscription it's always good to learn the noun the adverb the uh the verb adjectives right to subscribe or a subscription so to pay on a monthly basis nice expression to access the service i say the bbc the bbc if you live in the uk you don't have to pay um because you pay for a annual television license and you get free access if you live in another country like me then you cannot access the bbc unless you have a vpn and then you could right to binge and somebody talked about this in the stream right um [Music] in the chat stream of the video on facebook so binge is to well it's to watch or to do a lot of something or too much i will say too much the idea is that it's not only a lot it's actually too much so you can binge watch series so you watch a lot so for example if you watch um you know how netflix works right those of you who've been on netflix netflix when you're watching a series and you're watching an episode when that episode finishes this little thing in the corner goes next episode and you've got like two seconds before it automatically goes to the next one and then you watch the next one and then you watch the after three hours you're still watching that is binge watching a series right you're watching too much but netflix that's a terrible little thing they've got right two seconds you can't get even out of your chair in two seconds to turn it off i don't know so you can binge smoke if you smoke too much you can binge eat you can binge almost anything right use your imaginations so to binge um and a noun the noun is a binge right so some typical examples might be i like to relax and binge on game of thrones right binge on forgot to mention binge on so to binge on something normally not always so try and remember the connection right i've been john john as in john john john bin john i binge on game of thrones what do you binge on i i have been binging on money heist to tell the truth i watched like almost one episode every evening for the last six days to watch the whole this one particular series this one particular season excuse me binge on you can say i'm going to binge watch a series i'm going to binge watch a series um we talk about binge watching binge drinking binge eating so his binge drinking is a problem it's talking about of course alcohol in this case right i think if you binge drink water it's probably not a big problem but if you're binge drinking generally we talk about alcohol it's a problem great other things to notice i talked about series season episodes so going down the series is the name of the series and then you've got the first season and in the season you've got a group of episodes so the series season one episode two and after season one you've got season two and there'll be six episodes in that season so that's the typical language i mean especially netflix i think this is the language they use great what we got i'm going to share a few things i am binge on call of duty warzone you can binge games as well exactly you can binge video games um i'll just help you say tama just to get that right i'm binging right because you're doing it these days i assume i'm binging on that uh i binge on learning and working i tell you what very few people binge work i think we normally we normally associate it with um things of pleasure right i guess if you love your work then you can binge work absolutely um but for example helen says i like binge eating fries yeah well it's very dangerous i binge eat chocolate sometimes and yeah it can be a problem what else have we got um binging nice example here yosra says i've been binging on queen of the south lately so notice we can change the tenses i binge i'm binging i've been binging it's all fantastic practice great schreier says i'm going to binge watch harry potter series once i'll be free from all the workload right something to look forward to right shreya nice very good let's move on we can talk about a spoiler um and a spoiler alert so a spoiler is just when you to spoil right means to ruin something so a spoiler is when you say something that tells the other people the end of the story right so to spoil can can mean it has different meanings but generally it means to ruin something [Music] and when we talk about films or a series a spoiler is this is when you tell someone the end of a story or a season or an episode all of those right that's a spoiler um so we often get this when you know if i say oh i like binge watching money heist oh by the way i'm going to give you a spoiler that means i'm going to tell you what happens at the end and the reason people give a spoiler alert bing bing bing is to let you know i'm going to tell you the end or the result of the of the series um so if you don't want to know then you need to turn off so a spoiler alert is when you tell people be careful i'm going to tell you the end of the story what happens right um you know at the end of money heist what really happens is no i won't give you a spoiler because i don't know i haven't finished watching it yet but that's a spoiler so that's when you ruin some that you ruin the entertainment or the enjoyment right that somebody's having so spoiler alert is to to give a warning let people know you're gonna ruin this end for them [Music] you will tell tell them the result [Music] we can use this for all sorts of stuff for football as well right monday morning there's lots of spoiler alerts because people maybe they want to watch the match but if somebody says oh chelsea one ah that's a spoiler why did you tell me you idiot now i can't enjoy the match right these are your spoilers and your spoiler alerts we've also got a cliffhanger um which is i think very very common especially on netflix have you noticed netflix kind of produced the same kind of films again and again and again especially the action films right so a cliffhanger is when just at the end of an episode you're left in suspense you don't know what's going to happen right so at the end of uh i don't know maybe at the end of a certain scene at the end of an episode there's a fight and you've got the hero and the villain and the hero is fighting the villain and the villain takes a gun and he's about to shoot the hero and boom it finishes the end of the episode that is a cliffhanger you're like hanging on you want to know tell me tell me what happens right it's a cliffhanger a cliff is a steep steep kind of slope let me show you what a cliff is actually here you go let me show you a cliff just to make it clear because that then you'll understand cliff cliffhanger why we say cliff hangar here we go let me show you these are the cliffs can you see that cliffs it's like a mountain but it's the mountain at the edge of the sea and it goes straight down so you can imagine if you're hanging on the edge of the cliff the suspense is amazing um that's why it's called a cliff hangar right keeping people in suspense so let me just write that down for you a cliffhanger end of an episode nor a story that keeps the viewer in suspense that's a nice phrase keep me in suspense it keeps you in suspense good little phrase right nice collocation that's a cliffhanger so we'd say an exciting it's always an exciting end of an episode other words um commercials and advertisements there are different pronunciations right advertisements advertisements adverts and all of those when it comes to speaking you can use all of those probably with writing you would just use the first two right but when you're speaking you can say any of these and they all mean the same right people selling things commercials advertisements advertisements adverts ads lovely nice good let me see great um okay i'm just seeing there's anything we can share yeah that's a good example i mean this episode was a cliffhanger we only really use it for um the films and sorry films and episodes normally that cliffhanger of the last episode drives me crazy yeah since they want me to follow their next season exactly that's exactly it so this one though i'll i'll show you this from muhammad only because this is really good um muhammad this is really good because you're you're trying to use the new word in a new way it's not correct right we can't say i would like to keep you in cliffhanger we can say i would like to keep you in suspense yes but it's not a synonym right so you cannot use it in that context we can just say this episode was a cliffhanger right that's what we would say but i love what you're doing because you're trying to use the new words and that's brilliant because that's how you discover what's correct and what's not correct but well done thanks for sharing that that's great brilliant wow okay good cliffhangers lots of strange questions okay i'll leave you to carry on with the discussions i'm just going to move on to have a look at different kinds or genres of series so there are different words we can talk about kinds or types excuse me or genre different genres this is a great word right it's a french word you probably know and i think i've talked about this before that we love to borrow or steal no borrow borrow words from other languages right so we've taken the word from french probably from latin genre it's an interesting genre or type right and we use it in english right a genre you have to have a put your english accent on a genre so different genres and we use this especially if you're in netflix you'll probably see instead of type they'll have a genre is it drama comedy factual we've got different kinds we've got sitcom which is short for situational comedy things like friends big bang theory set in a house set in a particular context right and it's a comedy situational comedy we've got documentaries right which are more factual if you write so these are factual and uh kind of giving information right rather than entertainment things like david attenborough right the planet the earth um documentaries about animals about climate change i watched a documentary about um greta thorne greta greta is it thornberg greta and her development over the last year and the things that she's been doing um around climate change it's quite interesting we've got dramas right things like bridgeton oh bridgeton is a period drama so a period drama is a kind of a drama set in the past in a particular period so i think for example you may have a a drama about the life during charles dickens times and that'll be hundreds of years ago um all of the the bronte novels like pride and prejudice um those are kind of period dramas right so these are dramas set in the past and they're they've got a historical element right comedy obviously factual so it's it's real story normally based on a real story we've got sci-fi standing for science fiction so a lot of your stories about space if anybody watches um for all mankind on apple plus that's a sci-fi it's it's a story imagining life well not in the future it's life in the past but with a different past so it explores how we went to space and what would happen if both america and russia carried on going to space in the 1970s and 80s it's quite interesting we've got reality tv right which is normally a group of people in a place like a house or an island and how they survive together and how they relate to each other kind of big brother that kind of thing that was a big one years ago right um there are lots of these and now i can't even remember the names there are so many reality shows right reality tv and lifestyle right things like things like cooking decorating decorating a house all of those stuff master chef lifestyle different genres okay great good what have we got we've got somebody on facebook says i love sci-fi stories brilliant we've got aramit singing reality shows of course right the voice um there's britain's got talent the x factor all of those yes very good um sitcom says sonia is a new word for me there you go good we've got fiction yep we've got fiction as well good the kardashian tv reality show i would say um soap operas is a good one burg yes let's add that one as well so soap operas tend to be similar to dramas right soap operas are about everyday life um normally quite serious rather than funny so things in england we've got eastenders right um yes everyday life [Music] brilliant good ideas what else have we got comedy aniket says comedy is so funny in india great narcos yes is from the factual genre very nice very very good yes sci-fi please repeat this word psi phi sci-fi stress on the side sci-fi i like sci-fi there's another reality show right america's next top model haha oh we've got horror as well horror movies but we also have horror series right there are some horror series as well let me add that to our list horror i can't think of any horror series but i'm sure there are some right good now then i've got a little activity for you right i'm going to show you a picture in a moment and i want you to write down there there are six six six six there are six pictures and a oh no there are five i can't remember it's five or six there are some pictures there are several pictures and i want you to write down the different genre that the picture is right they're a different series basically so i'll show you the picture and in the comment box write down the number and the genre right this will take you a minute or so you can probably guess from the picture even if you don't know the actual series right okay let's try this let's see if this works are you ready here we go so number one is bridgeton so the question is what is the genre so you might write down number one uh horror it's not but for example number two is money heist but what's the genre number three is nadia's time to eat number four the walking dead number five modern family so the questions are what are the genres so just take a few minutes try and write them all down and i'll share your answers in a moment okay i'll give you a couple of seconds to write stuff down let me put on some music while you're doing that [Music] cool music right let me take that off i think we've got lots of ideas coming in so let's share a few of your ideas um i'm going to put some incorrect ones first and then we'll share them so nihola soap opera for number one not really soap operas tend to be modern day modern times right um what have we got for number one any others okay number one period drama is absolutely right bridgetom is a period drama um i'm not sure when it was set but yes definitely a period drama lots of you've got that great number one comedy well it's some of it's funny but i would say comedy is not the main idea there i think it's more period drama okay number two nobody's got number two number two horror oh not exactly horror um nirali says crime it is a crime yeah it is a cri exactly it is a crime they're breaking into a bank of course it's a crime it's a crime series very good let me add that to our list actually because we didn't have that in our list of crime series great number three we've got cooking without the c we've got cooking nutrition okay um and then we've got ah savita says lifestyle yeah number three is lifestyle right it's a lifestyle series excellent good um what else have we got we've got number four number four horror well interesting uh it could be horror right ghoul says horror as well um in many ways it is i think everybody's got horror for number four uttapal great the walking dead you know i've only watched one episode and it was pretty scary so all of these we've got horror let's put number four as horror um a number five we've got sitcom it's from kk situational comedy yes it is it is a situational comedy it's actually set up like a situational comedy most people i think would just call it a comedy yeah a zesim says it's a comedy show um yes so let me see comedy anima deep says also comedy if we got another idea we've got one drama two thrillers so two we said crime you could also call it a thriller series absolutely i'm going to add that to the list crime thriller action action series all of those are similar and not quite a drama but it could be a drama sometimes action and drama are put together um three's lifestyle for horror five comedy exactly great brilliant well listen let me um well let me take that off great and let me come back to our little list here so i've added um horror and i've added crime thriller action drama those are all very very similar actually crime obviously is more like csi where there is a crime committed thriller is just very exciting an action well it normally has a car chase something like that drama yes all of those quite similar excellent good let's move on i'm just going to make mention adjectives right um because when we're describing shows it's always good to have different words if we're talking about let me take these last three right um especially these three if we're talking about horror crime thriller action and drama then you may want to say that they are like this you may want to say they're gripping it's a gripping show gripping to grip is literally to hold i don't know if you can see me here but if i take the pen and i'm holding tightly i'm gripping the pen often when you're watching a series you're gripping your chair or you're gripping your partner's hand like that because it's so exciting or so horrific and scary you're gripping so we can say it's a gripping show right it's a gripping series um it was money heist was really gripping series um the handmaid's tale do you remember that the handmaid's tale was absolutely gripping there were cliffhangers like on every episode and it was a really gripping and thrilling series thrilling just meaning exciting enthralling is very similar as well as exciting it's engaging so it's kind of exciting and interesting so something that excites you and interests you and and sucks you in right it's enthralling so all of those crime and thrillers where they have cliffhangers they're really enthralling because you want to know what happens next um tragic they may be tragic if tragic just means very very sad right so when the hero dies like the the marvel series of films right when they click the fingers and half of the planet disappeared that was a tragic ending so that's very sad also you can have that with romance right romantic series romantic or romance you could say romance or romantic series they can be happy but they can be tragic not if they're american no if they're american they're always happy aren't they but you get in some countries the romances can be quite tragic um especially european films and series very down-to-earth um and very pragmatic and can be quite tragic so that's nice tragic i mean it's not nice no i mean it's nice language it's not it's not nice that it's tragic um scary so if you want to talk about horror or crime or thriller then you could say scary as well let's put that up there um whoops slightly different scary just means very what very frightening frightening [Music] scary right scary spooky this is really spooky the walking dead i found it really spooky quite scary and then if you're talking about comedies of course hilarious comedies or sitcoms you probably say they're funny of course excuse me funny is funny very funny it's hilarious right very funny what else i'm sure there are other words let's have a look let me come and find out you guys you're full of great great language let's see keith roasting american series absolutely come on absolutely i mean don't you find that they're all the same roasting them show stopping right that's nice jane yeah a show-stopping series show-stopping which is idiomatic because it doesn't literally stop the show but something that's so good so good it's show-stopping nice titanic is tragic there you go the titanic is tragic nice one of the exceptions yeah hemendra that's it the avenger end game that was it the end game that was it was it slipped my mind has very tragic ends yes if it does have different ends very tragic endings very tragic ends i would say has a very tragic end or ending i'm putting the singular maybe you want the plural i don't know i put the singular tragic end or tragic ending both of those are great good um captivating daniel that's a nice one yeah that's like enthralling so captivating is like enthralling right it's very very similar because it's it's exciting and interesting captivating nice word humorous so pradeep says humorous in comedy is very humorous yeah hilarious humorous is slightly less less funny but still very very funny humorous entertaining ridicul ridiculous but ridiculous just means bad right doesn't mean it's funny it means it's bad uh entertaining good great uh yodas says moving so for romantic let's put moving for romantic that's good moving it's very emotional yep entertaining we'll add those on as well brilliant so we've got some nice adjectives there very good i'm sure there's more hysterical that's a good one from ielts hello hysterical mr ielts is here hysterical i'll add that onto our list as well great where is it it's just there at the end nice so we've got there lots of adjectives to describe tv shows lovely what's next i know what's next can't hear that can you play again bum bum right good okay my friends where are we tv series so we've been looking here at vocabulary right and we've looked at quite a lot of vocabulary so i'm gonna move on um and do next this recent trends actually recent trends i'm just keeping an eye on the time wow is that the time already no i tell you what i'll tell you what i'm going to do give me a moment this is where i have to improvise i'm going to improvise right i'm going to skip recent trends recent trends i was going to talk about kind of subscription models the movement from television to streaming from the cinema to streaming at home monthly subscription models but as i might run out of time i'm going to move on to something else i'm going to move on to the next thing and the next thing was this one right a listening task task listening tasks so what we're going to do here as you may remember from the last few sessions i've started introducing some listening tasks it's actually all that we're doing i mean speaking and listening like like brother and sister right they go hand in hand when you're speaking somebody's listening and when you're listening somebody else is speaking so they're always together they're a kind of unified skill a bit like the marvel avengers they're unified so we're going to do a listening test because i think it's good for your speaking as well on this topic um we're going to listen to someone talking about their favorite tv series now i'd also want to let you know what i did before um on tuesday because whenever i tell you the topic of the class of this week i just make a web page now and put up a task for you to do so i put and i put the link in the facebook group facebook page and the community on youtube um and i'm just going to share this with you let me just show you what i did or what we had there because this is relevant to the listening so this was on my website the keith speaking academy so we had a page the ielts speaking lesson about website about tv series and i put up a task here and this was the first part of the listening we're going to do right and i asked people to read this and to guess the missing words and this is great because it gets you in the mood for the lesson but it also if you're a teacher it's called activating schemata it's starting to think about the language you need um for this topic and it gets your brain engaged it basically wakes you up and we got people posting right number one number two four and five question mark uh mirka had posted her ideas here um often i will go in and answer because but because of today's problem i couldn't do that i apologize but it's great we have here's put in some topics um and you'll see right can be any genre so the questions are not always black and white um the questions there are different possible answers right number three sci-fi thrillers mystery and the question number three was um i'm not one for comedies i'm more into dramas and right so there are different possible answers so i just want to let you know whenever we have a live lesson on the tuesday you can go to the link you'll find the link and go to the page um and this is the same page you can go after the class because after the class i will update all of this and include all of the notes we've been taking okay so that was just to let you know the moderators on the live chat can share the link to that with you so you can see it but also today i'm going to show you in our window um somebody's asking who are you paula tepcom paula is one of the moderators so paula is helping me moderate the chat session by sharing links and just helping moderate what's said there so listen the live task great thank you up sarah has put it on there as well yes great thank you moderators thanks guys now in this live lesson you're going to listen to someone talking about their favorite tv series so i'm going to show you again the beginning first um just here and the first bit and i want you also here to just have a look and try and guess you don't have to write it down just read first and guess what the words might be right just take a few seconds to have a look at this kashish you're welcome dwang is harry yes i realized it was you harry i recognize your name yes nice to see you here morning carolina i'm guessing you're in south america given the time difference great so let me read through and as as as i'm reading you can be guessing what the words are modern family is blank one of the blank shows i've ever seen i mean i'm not one for comedies really i'm more into dramas and blank but when i first saw this series it just had me in blank and then so you've got three families who are all interconnected and slightly off beat you know each with their own blank wow what can these words be have a think and i'll distract you right with some quiet music [Music] good ideas i can see some of you alexandre nelly great good ideas [Music] good liking number five emmy that's interesting romantic have you seen modern family it can be romantic it's true thank you but all of your suggestions are great jc hello from great to see you little jewel says it is quite tricky it is quite tricky music name is called make your move this has become like the kindergarten harsh says shout out my name harsh hello [Music] good you've got some great ideas right let me turn that off um okay so this goes on um it's a little bit longer this is just the introduction it carries on here but what we're going to do of course this is a listening task right so what we're actually going to do is you're going to listen you can watch stan the man my friend talking about his favorite tv series and as you're listening well you may be able to pick out some of these words and then i'll come back to it so listen carefully let's find out what he thinks about tv series and his favorite his favorite tv series okay he'll just take a couple of seconds to come down from the cloud my videos are in the cloud come down come down my friend here we go almost there ready [Music] yo check it out it's modern family undoubtedly one of the funniest shows i've ever seen now i'm not one for comedies really right now i'm more into dramas and thrillers and but when i first saw this series it had me in stitches i love the diversity of the actors and and the really over-the-top scenarios that they get into i mean it's just so unbelievable right that you can't help laughing so you've got like three fam families who are kind of interconnected and slightly off beat you know they're all with their own idiosyncrasies for example there's this gay couple who are like chalk and cheese they never agree and they usually argue and then in the end they always make up look like this for example it was pretty responsible great so many teens going down the wrong path i see it every day uh seems like you're trying to change the subject from you being gullible only because i have a more pressing concern today i have to oversee my first detention as acting vice principal and i've just been racking my brain of how i'm gonna reach these kids it's uh detention how about shut up and do your homework shut up and do your homework love it great i mean essentially right each episode follows the same formula which i guess is why it's been a success it kind of starts right with some kind of suspense and some confusion or misunderstanding then the confusion spreads across the three families so like massive confusion and then there's a crisis right and finally there's a happy resolution at the end classic hollywood to be honest anyway i would recommend it and if you're in the mood for a laugh nothing too serious of course just take the plot with a pinch of salt uh stan the man is as funny as the guys in the the modern family right very very good listen i saw some great answers there some of you have picked out you've got a very good memory because you've remembered the first five and you've picked out some really good ones this is quite funny you look like eminem ananda krishnan you look like eminem very very funny great so let's share some of the answers you've got modern family is oh a few of you have said funniest for number one funniest number one was it funniest even shakhan said funniest number two was funniest number one as nyok says was undoubtedly right number two was funniest number three shall i share this with you make it make it more sense number three anybody get number three uh yeah you've got okay i see why because you can't remember exactly you've got the right answers but in a different order let me share another one anyone so lochtau says undoubtedly funniest right that's why you said funniest thriller for stitches had me in stitches well done you well done very good um oh no not that one hilarious choice number one undoubtedly that was correct yes almost this is almost right hanish drama and sitcoms um okay drama sitcoms comedies five number five right idiosyncratic you're almost there you're almost there but not quite now that's great what we're going to do though is we're going to watch it again and you're going to try and find out the next words that are missing right um for example there's a gay couple who are like chalk and blank they usually argue and in the end they always make blank it starts with suspense and some blank anyway i would recommend it if you're in the mood for a blank nothing too serious of course just take the blank with a pinch of salt i wonder what those missing words are right so listen what we'll do is i'm going to show you i'm going to play it again this time you will be able to watch listen and see the script so it will help you fit in the missing words right um so you'll see what i mean as i show it up but here we go give me a moment let me put it on we'll watch again and you can get all of the answers this time just from number one to number 10 see what the answers are try and guess the answers try and work out the answers come on here we go [Music] yo check it out it's modern family undoubtedly one of the funniest shows i've ever seen now i'm not one for comedies really right no no i'm more into dramas and thrillers and but when i first saw this series it had me in stitches i love the diversity of the actors and and the really over-the-top scenarios that they get into i mean it's just so unbelievable right that you can't help laughing so you've got like three fam families who are kind of interconnected and slightly off beat you know they're all with their own idiosyncrasies for example there's this gay couple who are like chalk and cheese they never agree and they usually argue and then in the end they always make up look like this for example it was a pretty responsible consideration great i love it so many teens going down the wrong path i see it every day uh seems like you're trying to change the subject from you being gullible only because i have a more pressing concern today i have to oversee my first detention as acting vice principal and i've just been racking my brain of how i'm gonna reach these kids it's uh detention how about shut up and do your homework shut up and do your homework love it great i mean essentially right each episode follows the same formula which i guess is why it's been a success it kind of starts right with some kind of suspense and some confusion or misunderstanding then the confusion spreads across the three families so like massive confusion and then there's a crisis right and finally there's a happy resolution at the end classic hollywood to be honest anyway i would recommend it and if you're in the mood for a laugh nothing too serious of course just take the plot with a pinch of salt right great brilliant i've seen your answers coming up fantastic you've got some good answers there well done good listening skills let's just have a quick look um number six we've got a few of you have said let's see number six uh nirali says cheese like chalk and cheese classic right amit says number seven up yet they always make up to make up to make to become friends again uh number eight sampath says fusion oh not fusion but yes confusion right a confusion or misunderstanding and then number nine um just going up here if you're in the mood for a number nine anybody get number nine young got number nine laugh if you're in the mood for a laugh then just take the number ten did anybody get number ten i can't see anybody with number 10 right yes we've got maya maya's got number 10 here number 10 plot yes just take the plot with a pinch of salt fantastic well done let me just go through because there is some interesting language right i'm just going to show you the script with the answers and then you can always go back because this video is recorded on youtube and facebook you can always go back later it doesn't have to be after the class maybe after lunch maybe after breakfast or maybe tomorrow you could always go back and listen again and really pick out the language so we've got undoubtedly right modern family is undoubtedly one of the funniest shows i've seen nice language right i'm a big fan a very big fan of adverbs um i think we use far too few adverbs in our speaking and i think for students of ielts adverbs are a huge opportunity to show off rich language right instead of saying you know very really undoubtedly it's undoubtedly one of the funniest shows i've ever seen i mean it's very rich language and you can use adverbs all over the place in fact wherever there's a verb you can use an adverb right um i'm not one for comedy's great expression again right i'm not one for this i'm not one for cooking right i don't like cooking i'm not one for comedies i don't like comedies um i'm more into again i like i'm more into dramas i'm more into thrillers i like thrillers um but when i saw this series it had me in stitches and this actually is one of the idioms we're gonna see today um it had me in stitches it made me laugh right it made me laugh a lot right laugh out loud basically so it had me in stitches just means it made me laugh a lot [Music] great it had me in stitches great expression i love the diversity of the actors and the the really over-the-top scenarios that's a nice expression right over the top a scenario is just a situation so when you're talking about a film or a tv series you can talk about the sea not this well the scene or the situation or the scenario right they get into strange situations strange scenarios um over-the-top means just like fantasy exaggerated right not realistic um over the top so unrealistic too fanta too fantastic as in unbelievable okay let's say but of course that is how comedy works you put people into over-the-top situations or unbelievable situations and that's what makes it funny but over the top is a nice over the top a nice little chunk of language it's just so unbelievable you can't help laughing again another nice expression means you have to laugh i can't help laughing when i watch this i can't help laughing when i watch that romantic film i can't i couldn't help crying right i couldn't help blah blah blah i couldn't help laughing i couldn't help crying um i couldn't help shouting nice expression just means you you felt you had to do it so you've got three families that are interconnected yeah and slightly offbeat it's a nice word offbeat just means unusual [Music] a little bit strange maybe but just means unusual so they're not your everyday family because they're a bit strange not strange unusual off-beat in a positive sense right it means it's a positive thing if you talk about your friend as being offbeat it's it's a nice thing to say they're unusual they're unique they have their own idiosyncrasies so their idiosyncrasy right is the the thing that is special for them it's their special or unique behavior or characteristic so i would say unique behavior or characteristic [Music] idiosyncrasies right um for example i mean my neighbor right my neighbor upstairs um one of his idiosyncrasies is when he wakes up in the morning every single day he starts singing and you can hear him right eight well eight o'clock every morning and he just starts singing that's one of his idiosyncrasies right it's it's a kind of unique or unusual behavior um there's a gay couple who are like chalk and cheese we saw that uh recently right to be i think that was in my video wasn't it compare and contrast last week's video on saturday they're like chalk and cheese very different they never agree they usually argue and they always make up so to make up just means to become friends again become friends so when friends have had an argument they shout and maybe they split up but when they become friends again they make up it's a very important skill to learn how to make up with your partner right if you get them angry or you upset them and then they storm off in a rage and they never speak to you again you have to learn how to make up with your partner critical life skill we should be taught that in school i think but we're not um each episode episode we talked about follows the same formula right the same thing every time which why i guess it's a success yeah that's me roasting american series but i love this one so we've got suspense confusion we said the confusion spreads it's a nice collocation massive confusion another collocation there's a crisis and then a resolution these are all great words right if you're describing a plot or a story confusion crisis resolution classic hollywood finally if you're in the mood for a laugh so to be in the mood for something if you're if it's to feel like i'm in the mood for a pizza oh i am actually i'm getting hungry it's almost lunch time i'm in the mood for a pizza i'm i'm in the mood for a siesta after that but if you're in the mood for a laugh go and watch it just take the plot with a pinch of salt so the plot is the story so the story of a film or a book we call the plot so just make sure you take the plot with a pinch of salt so take something with a pinch of salt don't take it too seriously so that means don't take it too seriously right it's not realistic it's just tv it's not real great there we've got a great listening task i hope that has helped with your develop your listening skill so not only testing you but building up your listening ability and lots of um nice vocabulary and expressions you can use to talk about tv series and films and things like that great okay what's next keith what's next after the listening task i've got to check my my own notes um idioms it has me in stitches well i think you know that now i think you know what that means um let's move on to idioms but let me just check in with everybody and see how you're doing can we use pinch of salt for an argument depends what you mean by the argument um do you mean like an argument as in a debate and a discussion and my argument against or my argument for um can you use pinch of salt so it depends what you want to say right take my argument with a pinch of salt take my story with a pinch of salt take my argument with a pinch of salt you can say if you're not serious right so if you're debating something and say well i think this is absolute nonsense but listen it's a bit of a joke then yes take my argument with a pinch of salt you could say that right i make pizza for free oh great saitama good to know can you send me one that would be nice right emmy that's a good a good um sharing here it's cracked it's cracked i'm just going to correct you you're almost there but this is really good it cracked me up it has cracked me up it's let me make it clear for everybody it has cracked me up it has me in stitches it's just it was a little bit confusing because it's um let me just put your message back up so has cracked as the present perfect right it has cracked me up which means it has made me laugh and it has me in stitches it's not the present perfect so the two different tenses but they look similar but what you've got there is perfect right it has cracked me up it does it has me in stitches um i would actually say it cracks me up yeah i would just make it easier i would put them both in the present simple it cracks me up modern family cracks me up it has me in stitches that's simpler and i think easier but great emmy thank you very much for sharing that's nice to have some synonyms and similar expressions right alexander can i share your comment because it cracks me up i'm not one for drama really nice practice i'm more into key speaking academy videos [Music] beautiful practice i like it and i think the uh your example had me in stitches great this is good right take my advice with a pinch of salt yes that's nice we'll just change it instead of as it's not as it's with so take something with a pinch of salt right take my advice with a pinch of salt that's nice and salman the answer is yes take my words with a pinch of salt exactly yeah don't take it too seriously healthy i can hear mrs keith is preparing so can i i can hear the banging next door but i don't think it's pizza i know what it is today do you know what we're having for lunch today we're having da wae tai it's got potatoes vegetables all sorts of stuff in a big big stew great can't wait listen idioms i'm getting distracted let me move on idioms to talk about a tv series i'm going to share some idioms with you um and then we will stop reading the comments keith people asking me about my breakfast what do they have for breakfast haha chinese food yes i have lots of chinese food of course my wife's chinese so idioms right um idioms to talk about tv series i'll go through these i think now we've seen a lot of these but these are really useful to talk about the different genres right i was on the edge of my seat well if you're watching a thriller or a crime series or an action movie then probably you will be on the edge of your seat right it's the same as remember i was in suspense right i was in suspense i was on the edge of my seat nice it kept me guessing right up to the end right and that's especially with crime series like sherlock holmes is popular you don't know but it kept me guessing that's the expression it kept me guessing um sorry i'll put that right up to the end it kept me guessing nice expression right on the edge of my seat it's scared blah blah blah it scared the hell out of me so if you're talking about a horror film uh so that it scared me a lot right it really scared me or frightened me um talking about horror film the the living dead or the walking dead wow that scared the hell out of me there are different words you can use hell um there are stronger words and weaker words um i won't go into all of them because i don't use strong language very much but it's scared the hell out of me is i think acceptable to use in conversation and also in your exam test in your exam test your ielts test you could say it scared the hell out of me it's a little bit strong but it's not too strong or it scared me to death that's absolutely fine that's great so the same thing right it scared me to death ah saitama you're telling us all about darwitai fantastic you're making me hungry stop it now it has me or i'll put it had me in stitches in the past now we've explained that right it had me in stitches to make me laugh um so it has me rolling in the aisles is the same right it made me laugh a lot you can imagine the scene when you're rolling over in the isles so the isles is in the cinema so in the cinema you've got the seats over here then you've got the aisle or the passageway and then more seats and if you're in your seat and then you fall over you fall out of your seat and you're rolling in the aisles because it's so funny that's where it comes from so it had me rolling in the just aisles the pronunciation of this word right there's an s but you don't pronounce it so it's isle isles rolling in the isles not ielts [Laughter] isles so the pronunciation is the same as isle isle rolling in the isles okay nice and here well emmy you read my mind it cracked me up is the same right so i'm gonna just change this a little bit because all of these mean exactly the same it made me laugh so it had me rolling in the aisles not rolling in the deep thank you adele but rolling in the aisles it cracked me up also means the same it made me laugh now if you're talking about um a romantic film or a tragic ending i was welling up it was so sad so to well up is a phrasal verb that is idiomatic um it means to to begin to cry so when you know when the tears are beginning to come up and you can see somebody's about to cry you say they're welling up i was welling up right about the canadian version a boot it's about to cray um i was about to cry great take it with a pinch of salt we just explained right don't it's not too serious [Music] excellent i had to take it with a pinch of salt it was so over the top is the last one so over the top i think we mentioned that in the listening right it was over the top an over-top situation right um which just means unrealistic or unbelievable unbelievable [Music] great whoa great it was so over the top right i've kind of rushed through a little bit but um let's see yep emmy's there again split your sides we can add that one up yep you can say i split my sides laughing we'd sometimes say i split my sights um polyglot says super frequently coming up phrase i was on the edge of my seat yeah it's very commonly used but it's great oh this is a nice example right i like it the climatic change documentary was so over the top very good example yes um okay yes here's another one shri here the soap operas of indian television are over the top yeah also with all respect to south america but the south american soap operas are outrageously over the top right notice my adverb outrageously over the top great jerome says i was on the edge of my seat all throughout the series lovely language yep yeah this is nice and josie and josie watching friends series had me going to the finale right and it kept me guessing or had me going to the end that's interesting a little quote from vram she krishna love is something that is sent from heaven to worry the hell out of you nice example right very very interesting okay excellent so guys we've looked at idioms and i think that's it idioms it brings us to the very very end unfortunately we do not have kahoot today so sorry i didn't have time to do it um but i hope you've got lots of language and i can just suggest that in about three hours you go to the website and you can download the notes and you can review the notes you can watch bits of the class again if you want and you can review on your own let me show you the website just so you know where to go and um if the moderators can pop in and just give the link to the live lesson page so if you go to the website and click on the free live lessons up here then you can go there and you'll be able to get the latest live lesson so last week we did social media you can just study the lesson directly you can watch it again or you can download the notes and then we've got all the previous live lessons well not all of them but a lot of them and if you want to download them you can they're all here all you need to do is click to study and then on that page you will be able to download there you go just there at the top you can download the notes or you can just read them right you can just read them on the on the page so these are all the notes here it's just a page to help you study so you get better and better right great that's it just to remind you then that that is the key speaking academy um dot com where you can find all of that what else was i gonna say i did have something else to say oh yes if you're on youtube um turn on the notifications subscribe to youtube and turn on the notifications so that you can find out about saturday's video on saturday i'm releasing a video and it's all about well adverbs and synonyms do you know i talked about adverbs
