Pokemon Ruby but only super-effective moves do damage

today we are playing pokemon ruby but every pokemon that we fight has wonder guard in addition to their normal ability wonder guard makes it so only super effective moves do damage we're gonna try let's get into it so it's ant of course it's ant that's me well my pokemon have wonder guard my pokemon do not have wonder guard my pokemon are completely normal if i catch a wild pokemon that has the extra wonder guard ability when the moment i catch it it no longer has it anymore what if it's normal ability as wonder guard then it has double wonder guard which is the same as one wonder guard so uh let's get to the first battle then huh so we get to pick our starter and this is going to be one of the most important decisions we make i'm just going to say straight up we're not picking trico i don't think that's a good choice grass is not good mudkip learns a lot of water and ground type moves water and ground pretty good torchic though learns fighting moves learns fire moves it knows peck i think we have to pick torchic i think so [Music] and here is how the battle works we go into a battle we send out torchic and we scratch and putienna avoided damage with runaway so that's wonderguard activating but it says run away so uh yeah what happens if you lose this battle the professor dies sorry professor i i mean i got the torchic that's all i'm here for all right two more and then we'll see what happens [Music] well there you go first battle done he ran away perfect he's run away to run away first battle done easy as that would you like to give a nickname yes and again the going to white out i'm just going to see what happens i'm just going to try the fight and see what happens maybe we can just lose i'm not exactly sure i'm gonna growl because i think it only has tackle and we're just gonna growl a bunch okay oh god that does a lot and like how many moves does it have it has tackle how much power points does tackle have it is same as scratch 35 we'll see tackle two damage still and he's ah that we'll see what can we do other than just growl and wait okay so now we use a potion and that's ten more tackles that we can take well nine more tackles we can take mudkips tackle miss that's incredible i forgot tackle could miss at this point we need to hope it doesn't crit [Music] good good okay we can potion again tackle this two potion that's 22 he has 13 more tackles tackle no crit no crit good there's growl is he out of tackles i think he might be out of tackles he's out of tackles okay that means we need to let him growl 40 times now and i think we can win this battle in the first try it might be on this turn i think this turn is when it struggles there it is struggle okay how much damage does this do deals two damage to us and one damage to itself we should be able to win because we're gonna start struggling now and now because i have these potions we should be able to win this battle because it takes a little bit of damage i struggle it takes some damage it was a crit let's go and struggle goes through wonder guard okay i'm gonna heal because i think we win guaranteed now it's hit with a recoil and it might go down this turn another crit would you look at that super good luck and we gained 69 exp leveled up first battle is done it is hit two moves this entire game and they were both crits now here's the thing i'm not going to heal at the pokemon center because now we're struggling and we should be able to take out other pokemon i want my pp to stay at zero puciana at sign that sound has no moves left you struggle that's a crit good would you take some damage for that pucciana does oh pucciana doesn't have bite yet that's true at sign your level seven learned focus energy yes struggle is the only move that can hit a pokemon guaranteed oh you've got to be kidding me [Music] oh that sucks we learned focus energy and we can't struggle anymore all right last focus energy it failed now we can struggle and we can take out this wormpole if we can get ember we can ember whimples okay we're fine we're good level 10 and ember we have a move that can actually be super effective so now we can go against whirlpools and the wormpoles i'm just gonna shift that over there our weak to ember awesome it only took like 30 minutes to get to get a move so we didn't have to struggle anymore a ralt's do we need a route i really don't think we need one we don't need it would we waltz trace the wonder guard that okay i'm gonna catch a route just to see it traced okay so that means i'm gonna try and catch this one i'm gonna try and catch it one two three we got the routes cyclan welcome to the team cyclone it's gonna trace its runaway does does runaway include tech okay it doesn't trace the wonder guard we never get it at the very least we have a ralts yes okay level 16 at sign is trying to learn peck yes please forgot focus energy we learned peck now it's going to evolve yes got a combustion so it just learned a peck but also it's going to learn double kick and now we have some coverage let's get rid of scratch so i believe now we're able to take on the first trainer i'm going to start switch training cyclan i believe they have a pucciano which we should be able to take out zigzagoon no problem no problem and this is why we did so much grinding at the start it's because now we have a fighting type move to take out these normal types and these dark types all we gotta do is double kick look at that easy bug catcher sure let's check out the bug catcher now we can just pack yeah good takes it out and i think anything at the start here i can handle we are a little over leveled but that's to be expected we had to over level to to get the right moves cycling level five nice okay well we can't do that battle we're just gonna do we need a sample for him we're fine we're fine not a big deal okay wally how is this wally battle gonna go does he tackle with the zigzagoon no that doesn't i'll just punch him myself a single pokeball just one any cat first ball what a guy while he's just doing his best really do you have an idea of the team you want i have not thought about this whatsoever i have not thought this challenge through i have no idea what my final team is going to be but i am excited to find out you guys ready hour and 15 minutes in gym one okay geodude it is level 14. that's actually pretty high and switch to add sign we're still switching cyclan a little bit double kick should one hit ko yes good awesome i think we have won this gym there you go took on the nose pass and i think we can go through the rest of this area without any fear whatsoever now cause there's flying types bug types dark types normal types grass types and we have moves for all of those anyways first thing we're gonna do we're gonna go i rock tomb sucks but it's better than nothing but man our coverage is actually insane and yeah we're going to go back really quick just to catch a shroomish because in case we come up against like a merrell or something a merrell is the only thing that we can't handle there's a shroomish awesome very nice now we are just going to throw okay meryl this is why we caught cj was specifically for a battle like this gonna be a bit of a long one huh i'm gonna stun spore just in case it starts to roll out that will stop the rollout from happening cause stun spore still works status effects are still they still work ghost coverage is needed i don't think we're gonna come across any ghost types though that's the thing plus like the only thing that ghosts can get hit by is what is it ghosts and dark oh yeah the elite four they have ghost types looks like we might be catching a dust call okay cj good level cj oh here's the thing we could catch a ninjask to get a shedinja for the ghost type elite four but then they can hit us for super effective damage and we gain nothing yo cj level 10. nice and leech seed which like i said is a status move but yeah brawley we have a psychic type we have a pokemon that knows a flying type move that's going to be very useful uh do we need flash i don't think we need flash zubat is flying poison do we need a zubat because zubat can evolve into crowbat learns air cutter wing attack confuse ray astonish for those ghost types i think we catch it [Music] we'll catch another one wait what we let's check our team actually oh my god we got an adamant ralts that lowers special attack and raises attack that's bad okay zubat i will stun spore it one two three first try name it brick no i works great doesn't do direct damage so it does still hit we defeated that magma ground we need a water type it would be helpful this raffle fight might be hard it might be i don't think it will but it might and gert goes level 16 and that is magnitude yes we need magnitude uh i guess we'll fight our rival now right what's he open with a gulpin or a number doesn't matter either way gerg is the have an answer for a number now magnitude 8 let's go okay and there you go easy fight you guys said that was going to be hard we crushed that are using an emulator no what would make you think that i'm using instead of a gameboy sp gameboy advance super speed they didn't sell very many because they realize they really can't market something that's when you spell it out it says game boy ass so i think they they stopped selling them it was only sold for a really short period of time so not many people have them had to leave what happened oh i'm just talking about my game boy ass i suppose we fight watson now huh watson time third badge three hours in we're on good pace batch an hour okay leader watson would like to battle magnemite magda might not survive this magnitude we're a little under level not that that's gonna stop me or anything but like we're still fine sonic boom is fine can't take me out with that magnitude seven he'll live that he'll probably live that he did not live that okay sonic boom not a problem magnitude should take it out pretty much unless it's like magnitude 2. yeah all right we won that is gym number three done sweet now we will get strength which usually in a challenge run strength is like okay it's a good basic move that does a good set amount of damage it's literally useless in battle in this one so uh it's just it doesn't do anything i should probably catch like a zig zagoon or something because they can learn surf and strength all those good stuff okay cool we got strength now do we go up to fall arbor town now yeah yes we do how are you playing the gameboy game in widescreen so let's look at this gameboy really quick what is the shape of this screen what would you say it's a rectangle yeah rectangle yo i got my what i have fire red in here is my team on fire red a level 75 pidgey named dennis and that's it i was doing a pidgey solo run i guess can you beat pokemon fire red with only one dennis maybe what's the most innovative pokemon move in your opinion okay so like solar beam the first turn charges up the second turn it attacks also you know what dig it's dig it's got to be dig same thing but here's the thing here's the thing with dig it's even better than solar beam because on the turn that the first turn when you use it you just don't get hit you're just you're just safe and you know if you look closely enough at every pokemon move it turns out that everything is just a derivative of dig fly it's just bird dig protect it's just the first turn of dig earthquake it's just the second part of dig flamethrower it's just the second part of dig but fire type you know the part that does damage when you really think about it and get right down to it swords dance it's the first turn of dig but it raises your attack but you know to balance it out you can still get hit right what about splash though it's just like not using dig so in short dig is the most innovative pokemon move hey guess what guess what you know what that means cyclone's evolving ralts dug under the ground curlia popped up yo look at that incredible special attack set wow god it sucks why do we have an adamant curlia maxi fight generally pretty difficult let's see how it goes i think gerg has a good chance of sweeping through but i don't know mighty anna oh i guess that does intimidate so it's good to switch out on okay double kick should ko it out speeds what a speedy little dog and we miss ah but max you can only use now oh my flinch wait how do we out speed did he use roar oh it's a speed tie huh [Music] there we go we finally hit one and it goes down [Music] camerupt is the one that scares me because gerg is the only thing that could do damage to it now and if cam erupt has earthquake we're just screwed or magnitude it used focus energy that's good camera is the biggest threat at this point magnitude 8 that's good that's strong oh a one shot okay yes all right easy battle easy battle goal bet no problem it's just gonna bite me that's quite a lot but no problem no problem look at that damage mr supersonic hit another rock throw thank you oh potion okay oh miss come on man bite i can always heal and i um yeah i'll heal also come on man okay we're just gonna switch does he not know wing attack uh all we need is one more we can hit one oh my god another super potion come on man just give slams interesting apparently body slam is the most damage anything can do um we're gonna send in at sign to start getting it hits some rock tombs okay attract not a big deal is kind of annoying though we're gonna we're gonna rock to him through the the love because at sign doesn't fall in love most of the time all right here's this is the best situation that gerg has been in yet because overheat is going to do near nothing magnitude 5 that sucks that's not great that's a crit though that's good but i think we can survive a body slam it can't attract me i think we as long as this magnitude is like nothing i think we're good [Music] yes yes magnitude 9. let's go oh we got it gerg has done it baby good job gurg that's badge number four that paralysis man what the heck that's our team seen
