so the police called in all the cavalry the boat was arriving so that was a helicopter too it was all happening and it was something like out of a james bond movie harry's is called to backpackers rip i love you the boys sure you've got it it's just two in those once through the break harry's realises only one person needs assistance when i got out there it was just one and it was a little irish man a little leprechaun and he couldn't believe where he was and you know he was so grateful to see me on holidays from northern ireland 26 year old lee patton has an interesting turn of phrase that currency yeah once more this time with the translation that currency why it's they're hungry i was actually chatting to this irishman and i couldn't understand a word he was saying is he was just speaking his own dialect out there i could swim leagues well like that's just crazy it's very good man nearly hard attack i thought it was gone you know that's the first time i thought i was gonna die really water swarming that's very scary thankful for the rescue lee wants to buy harry's a drink please get a beer top man no we will get a beer together please please no no no i don't know like every good irishman they want to have a beer to say thank you as long as you're fine now please i had to say no i can't actually drink town while i'm working on the beach so he gave me 20 for the bushfire appeal come here if language wasn't on lee's side today at least lady luck was it looks like you got your four-leaf clover buddy i'll never forget you man i'm getting hurry there the new tower at south bondi is beardy's pride and joy our lifeguard tower is an essential part of our beach management it's been a long time coming that tower and it is such an asset for us to do our job efficiently but as beardy patrols the water's edge at backpackers rip the tower is unattended [Music] oh come coming here it's all black we'd leave some of our belongings in there or there's just binoculars and things that we use to to do our job and we can't have any of that essential kit to go missing the key to prevention is observation [Music] once we see something from there then we can direct our staff to uh to move it i think the key to good lifeguarding is a really structured well-placed observation point and that's exactly what we've got with our new tower and it's just aiding beach safety down this end of the beach having had their fun the intruders take off but have they left their run too [Music] i late looking for my shoe but then i found my shoe yeah yeah that's our towel i just wondered why you went in and oh cause i thought you guys would leave the shoe there i'm so sorry yeah all right that's all you did yeah yeah i promise i promise i didn't do anything we didn't do nothing we just looked on the binoculars a little bit see if everyone's all right so i go up there there's nothing no no there's no i promise guys i didn't steal anything i was looking if everyone was okay and [ __ ] and everyone was all right they may have fudged the truth but beardy isn't about to make a big deal of it i was happy that they're just a couple of little kids it's new to them no one's in there they have a little look it's like the old abandoned house you've got to go in and have a look even though you shouldn't but um no real harm done i know can i am too central for me go ahead i just got a report this guy um these harassing people of the northeast between me and the north settle flags black hats and black shorts and just see him have him really address you towards someone on the shore is he violent or is he just touching people inappropriately good afternoon juliet shrimp from the bono lifeguards how are you uh we have a man uh down here who's inappropriately touching people um in the water you know they pretend to bump into people and but we've had like numerous numerous complaints when the police arrived for this matter i was really relieved because our main priority here is is the swimmers in the surf thanks for coming down uh we're getting reports he's touching people on the beach in the water the man is spotted under the beach higher umbrellas but he doesn't get to enjoy the shade for long i could see them chasing the alleged offender down the beach i had no idea what was going to happen next as the arrest strategy is formulated the man makes his way onto the reef at the south end you can walk out there we're not allowed to not leave out there something happened yeah so the police responded with their water police boat and once they brought their water police boat into the bay it was decided that it was too shallow for the water police boat to come in close enough so they needed another plan we need to evacuate the water normally lifeguards only evacuate the water get out of the water during shark sightings when that chopper come over the headland it was like we're on the set of a hollywood movie mate it was unbelievable and that was to send beauty out on the jet ski to the police boat pick up the water police officers and bring them in to the mount on the rocks the man has now evaded police for over an hour and a half beardy's picked up the two border police from the boat okay and he's driven into icebergs where this guy's perched up on this random rock such a weird situation a jet ski a boat a helicopter scores of police and half a dozen lifeguards they've just arrested him with force and uh before we knew it we were just sitting there and that he was getting marched off the base wrist locked with an escort of police it was it was quite a full-on scene after an hour and 45 minutes the man was arrested and charged with hindu police as well as stalk and intimidated that could have killed someone going down that chase take it [Music] that set of stairs is used by thousands of people every day it's the main thoroughfare to the bondi to bronte coastal walk and also one of the main entry points to the beach so if anything happened along that stairwell there it would be catastrophic you're in charge of that vehicle yeah the driver of the car was exiting a garage on this steep street she apparently scraped her car on the way out so she got out of the car to check the damage and then she left the handbrake off and it just rolled down backwards and off the edge we landed on the next level miraculously no one was using the stairs when the two and a half ton car plummeted over the edge you've probably got one very embarrassed car owner up there but also probably a very lucky one because no one's been hurt obviously so she should go and buy a lottery ticket really [Music] total write-off unless you want a convertible you know like long got crashed is wild difficult extraction girl a couple of them i get a crane and lift it out but they're going to drag it up the wall onto the back of the truck that's waiting where the fence used to be it's an absolute miracle that no one was hurt [Applause] back for lifeguarding group of monks alex is a driver responsible for a group of monks who are visiting australia from bhutan they don't really speak english they speak a bit [Music] we've got a case of nine missing monks this is gonna be interesting is it a monks or a a little monkey up in their usual gear he used to watch monkey magic after school [Music] power rangers a bunch of men in long flowing robes should be easily spotted you think they'd stand out with them are they with a lovely smiley face yes but the monks have done a disappearing act what about the tower the tower you see the people below you know what they look like yeah [Music] driver alex scans for signs yeah and they're sweet they can swim bit but we've got a situation here we've got a driver missing nine monks they're no good in the water this is a problem with no sign of the monks the only explanation is that they're hiding in plain sight they said [Music] it's a miracle we found the monks by looking like any other bunch of mates kicking a soccer ball the monks have evaded driver alex he couldn't wait the binoculars went down he stormed out the door [Applause] it was an amazing sight watching him leave the tower reunited with his passengers alex isn't taking any more chances why are you still here is that all well because i'm i'm gonna watch you guys because you're not familiar with australia [ __ ] i'm gonna watch them i like to watch the kids you know like like bring kids to the school excursion [Music] plenty of people over the years have come to the beach and they've lost their wallets they've lost keys you know they've lost children but never have they ever lost monks [Music] must be lyra is that right today hoppo is hosting a very special guest welcome to bondi nine-year-old lara has travelled from queensland with her parents tanya and david as well as brother rory her dream is to become a lifeguard for the day so how about we go and meet some of the guys in the charity is going to be fun yeah since 2017 lara has been battling leukemia childhood cancer happens at absolute warp speeds there's a lot of really confronting surgeries there's a lot of really confronting procedures that hurt and she would just talk through it oh that's good she managed her emotions really well i'll come in and meet the guys this is lara she knows more about here than we did during more than 800 days of cancer treatment lara often watched episodes of bondo rescue dreaming that she might one day meet her heroes in real life hey guys how are you okay does this look pretty familiar yes yeah wait today lara's dream of being a lifeguard for the day is coming true i've got a little shirt for you first a series of tests do you know where the backpack is [Music] but it seems lara knows a lot more than the lifeguards expected do you know where flat rock is she passed the binocular test now lara is ready to put on the blue shirt and do a patrol since you're a lifeguard now you're going to be getting some lifeguard jobs around the beach lara's next skill is mastering the megaphone attention swimming please move over to the flag finally the most important test spotting a rip it's a steep water deep frock ground back there see all this water is coming in and needs to go back out to sea that's why a lot of people get in trouble right it looks pretty safe so it's really big the boys everyone gets out there on the rescue boards and cracks big waves on there just breaks off the point but it's too big to bring a patient in sometimes you've got to paddle out his little boat ramp just off the side there we go and uh bring the patient on the boat ramp yeah well right there i'm going to troubles you have to get wet if early signs are any indication lara may actually become a professional lifeguard one day [Music] 6 30 p.m and it's pack-up time all flags boards and buggies will be locked away for the night well that's the idea anyway i've got a very good driving record like i'm pretty handy with the reverse um with the trailer normally if you'd be reversing like a trailer or a caravan you're going to have your mirrors you're middling your two sides this one you've got a rubber neck and it can go wrong quite quick despite an impeccable driving record vagus has run his buggy aground there wasn't a ramp basically it was nothing i could do it was clearly mother nature's fault for digging out all the sand i jammed it jammed it hard whether he wants it or not baggis is about to get a whole heap of advice central to north tower go ahead we just get one of you guys just to walk up here um just sometimes he's got a problem with the bike i never wanted this to be me what's happened nothing's happened when i arrived vegas was still quite confident but that confidence quickly diminished [Music] ready [Applause] the wheels were fully covered it was the deepest bog i've seen so i sort of came down with a fresh set of eyes and surely if we could get towed out we can build the sand back up start again the young recruits advice is falling on deaf ears can you get that sandbag is that loose yeah because then you can put it under the wheel yeah that's it that should work i thought the logical solution would just be to tow it out with the other buggy we have two buggies one's bogged one's not well the other bug you're just going to tell us out won't it but yeah i got shut down pretty quick and the boys seemed to think that they had better ideas [Music] perfect i was stoked my solution was the the winner put that one into the park can y'all please this song doesn't go back after finally solving the problem surely fatty is due some recognition fatty thinks he he knew but he's a he's a young pup like he don't i don't even know if he can reverse the trailer in oh i think baggage might take claim because it's a little bit a little bit embarrassed that he bogged it in the first place
