women on the service we just don't have that many coming along and applying the most recent female lifeguards have been training to make a right former iron woman prop castle and now form a pro surfer Nicola Atherton currently the only woman serving at Bondi Nickel had joined the service in 2013 but getting here has been a rough road when I was young I guess I was just always to be different I was really tall and overweight and dyslexic and I couldn't read or write bullying shaped my life it just seemed like these kids just always needed that person to put down to you know it's a hit to throw things at to say things - after years of bullying Nicola found an escape surfing was that one for me where I just like it was something I could do by myself whenever I wanted and it really really saved me from a lot of things obviously because I was out and exercising I was able to lose a bit away so I could think about you know like I'd finished school and I'd run down and go surfing IH day teen Nicola became the world junior champion then traveled the globe as a pro surfer for roughly ten years I qualified for the world tour I never ever in my wildest dreams thought I'd ever actually achieve after the Pro Tour Nicola was more than qualified for life guarding the water skills the second to nine like she's a big pro surfer you know she's won the pipe masters you know she's brilliant water she excels in every situation she's puttin it must be pretty hard working with 35 guys and one girl that being lifeguarding for you now and it's been awesome to be working on the beach and I kind of get my fix the ocean through my job which is unreal I only only go there [Music] a cyclone swell off North Queensland has caused some of the biggest waves to hit Bondi all summer that was massive waif guards are on high alert you know when you get those massive days the you know the beach can't handle it so it's when pretty much old roots start firing and the north corner it was just howling it was one of the biggest rips on the beach that day which is you know it's quite rare the club you tryna do a rescue and they're about to get mugged on the rocks a volunteer surf lifesaver is attempting a rescue in the riff at North Bondi Nicola is called to backup yeah sure you saying the club is old freaking out there screaming for more help he's gonna just write out so I could see one cop he's gone out the rock lost his board he's probably gonna get in trouble I think there's one body boarder I've lost out of him Nicola offers assistance yeah Nick's gone way out by Ram Starr we're gonna mess rescue in 10-foot sauce heavy very heavy nikola acids local surface if they've seen an elderly man on a body boy just checking just like hey is everyone okay and they were like no we think this guy will get into trouble nikola identifies a man clinging to a bodyboard they should not be out here who've a crap is on holidays from Germany I nicked a lot of things to be coming in she's doing it rescue she's got one on board we actually got in once and then he jumped off he jumped off in the rip and went straight back out the exhausted German tourist has been battling for over half an hour Nicola makes a second attempt to save him going now she's after leaving the powerful rip pulls them out to sea the waves were so big there was so much happening at the rocks right there and he just can't understand what I'm saying I just couldn't communicate with him and we're sitting in the rip just going out to sea and then finally like I got him on the board and I had to roll away with them struggles to understand niccola's instructions next thing was how do I get him in the waves are massive at that point I knew I couldn't get him back in to be oh wow Nicholas still trying to get this guy in she's in a lot of trouble Nicholas still trying to get this guy in she's in a lot of trouble she's in front of rocks in 10-foot search Nicollet struggles to rescue a German tourist doing a Denali rescue ever she's in a terrible spot she made assistance Harry's is stationed on shore with the buggy but can't back up since there's only one vehicle available to cover any other emergencies [Music] oh yeah she's just gotta take it on at that point I knew I couldn't get him back in to the beach [Applause] go up the rocks lay it's impossible for Nicola to fight against the rim she has just one option left the narrow boat ramp is sandwiched between rocks off-duty lifesavers backup Nikola has sent him up the rocks which is one of the heaviest things to do and two bystanders drag the guy across the rocks and up to the bar around I think he got a few scrapes but yeah he's I think he's more than happy to be on dry land it doesn't matter if you Kelly Slater you're gonna get smashed out in the water and it's remaining calm and G remain calm she knew that she had to get the bloke in and she did the right thing the reason why this rescue was particularly hard was just because I couldn't communicate with him and it kind of all made sense when I met him on the beach once I finally got myself in understand to be okay we knew he really okay but the cerveteri point by the size it said for the mountains behind me today I think today so it's a land a Nicolas rescue has impressed her teammates it's Nicola man she's wait you gonna put her in cage for lions and she'll come out all right I know four guys elite life guard pride themselves on being the benchmark of surf rescue but how do they compare to the rest of Australia's water men one of the great proving grounds for oceans for us is the rocknest Channel swim held in Western Australia the race is a grueling 20 kilometers from cottesloe beach to Rottnest Island it's a pretty fierce swim it's pretty big competition last year the Bondi boys placed second in the four-man team event they're a little bit disappointed with that so this year we're really pumped to go over there and and show our best and put in a massive effort we needs to win this year just because you know we're Waterman we've got the Bondi rescue team which is Maxie Jesse and dunno and myself has a lot of pride there and we need to really come up a win this year in the lead-up to the race the team suffered a major setback I fractured my pelvis hip and coccyx it was definitely the worst injury I've ever had in my life a lot of people were like there's no way you're gonna make this swim but I always like to prove people wrong Jesse finally gets the all-clear from doctors just weeks before the race I just put my head down to my arse up and trained as hard as I could for you wake up and cross them together race day cottesloe beach Western Australia I was really pumped before the race so I was gonna lead off the beach yeah site just to smash out that first 1,500 meters and tag maxi and and sort of bang away from them [Music] employing that's thing up there it's a straight arm winner Maxie's about to jump in and hopefully we can keep stretching out the lead the race is a relay teams of four rotate through six hours of swimming windy no tags Maxie at the first changeover Bondi are in first place it's definitely a bit rougher out there the previous year's but these swimmers everywhere at the moment of boats the Western Australian coastline is one of the shark iasts places in the world since 2001 there have been 14 fatal shark attacks with the sharks in Wi they've predominately beat sharks great whites there's some big 5 6 meter scary sharks over there that's we're down for sharks sharks everywhere Papo has taken precautions considering everyone had a bit of fear I thought I'd bring in the shark bands for our team shot bands are a watch like device which emit an electromagnetic signal I felt more comfortable wearing the shark band but a great while it's a great white six kilometers offshore disturbing news comes in we've gotten a call over the radio that that know someone for here that was pretty pretty scary hearing that we didn't see the shark but it did set foot to heart when you throw for that moment Jessie next swimmer in line needs some encouragement it was a bit hesitant but I think the three of us pushes back straight into you he went home go still recovering from serious injury jessie has more than sharks on his mind as she's singing about my hair my pelvis now I'll go be able to make it Gus I'm moments after starting his swim leg Jessie stops their heavy kind of guy I had to jump out at one stage because I just I just didn't think I was gonna make it I kind of jumped in the boat and they know jumped in and swum but he wasn't looking the best he said he had a bit of pain it's gonna be a big swim if he had to pull out the lifeguard team placed second last year it'll be impossible to win with one man down I kind of looked into Maxie's face and he they didn't look too happy with a man down the team dropped back in the field Jesse decides to give it one more crack yeah I push through and all I want to do is win for the team and I'll push it in my body to the limit a rival team continues to lead the race we just pushed ourselves aside as we can every time someone jumped in the water we've pushed push push push but bondi clawed their way back to second maxie chops in for the final strike then I handed me the bat and he said I want you to finish at home and homicide as I could the finish line rottnest island Maxie emerges from the water bond I are victorious when Maxie cross the line and we came up afterwards there was huge elation yeah it's an amazing feeling this year was five times harder damashii that's why she was like a pool and this year I was a two-foot chopped sales yeah way harder it's a courageous effort by Jessie just weeks after recovering from injury Jessie was a little bit sore but it probably showed his toughness and his fitness level and now showing also he's ready to come back to work and be back on the beach and back to normal duties top physical shape is essential for lifeguards but so too is expert medical knowledge every year lifeguards treat hundreds of people often in tragic circumstances no feeling at all mid-afternoon and a woman complains of neck pain following a collision with a surfboard Deno quickly administers pain relief via the green whistle out of the ocean but then when we sort of stabilize her on a spinal board she complained that she had no sensation in her lower limbs at that point I was genuinely worried for the girl do you think this girl could be paralyzed or quadriplegic for the rest of her life and were you out the back when the girl ran out of you lady just didn't think of where she was going in which state Oh through the support there now I can't feel my legs emergency response paramedic : arrives and conducts a further assessment still equals done good job as the woman is prepared for hospital inconsistencies emerge in her story most to pain being hip 5 or so forth my initial instinct is to help a patient as much as possible but at the end when the story changes a couple of times it starts to get a little suspicious [Music] lifeguards are treating a woman who says she has no feeling in her legs I was really worried for her and I took the utmost precaution but there didn't seem to be the mechanism of injury that I'd seen before Deno remains unsure about the woman's story the woman is transported to hospital for x-rays word came back from the hospital when things started to get serious in there that she decided to discharge yourself instead and walk away becoming a lifeguard has been a major shift for Nicola professional surfing was her wife's passion coming down from that has been harder than expected that change was just incredibly hard for me and I fell into a very very bad deep depression took tremendous support from my family there was so much going on at that time so for me it was like I'm being weak I'm being weak but you know it's actually harder to ask for help than it is to just try and be proud lately Nicola has turned to surfing again she's back in the competitors Jersey this time representing Bondi at the national team's Tigers it wasn't so much a conscious decision to get back in the water and surf is just to just naturally started happening I'd get these spurts so last year so I think I'm running like trying to get my boy to get out of there as quick as I can [Music] Nikola holds sessions with local girls facing the same challenges she once did so I know all of you girls are really confident in the water you know we're a rep is you know sandbanks things like that but we're surfing I want to get you looking at the ocean a little bit differently German feel like sometimes you just never in the right spot you're never getting the good ones but everyone else is yeah so the aim of the game today is to look at the ocean and go that was a good wave all right come on more than a mentor she's also a friend to the girls in tough times she was really tragic one of the young girls from Bronte killed herself and she's friends she goes to nippers with a bunch of the girls that I've been taking so I just kind of wanted to pull them away from the graph that they're in and and just have a bit more fun I feel special to be able to get back and have them listen to me that's nice I just love the fact that I can hang out with them just pass on any you know a little bit of advice or guidance just to help them out Nicola Appetit a guiding light in a male-dominated sport she like really inspired me and like actually really cool she told me a bit more bit more than my dad she's showing the boys how it's done and good on us to doing it because I think that needs to be more girl surfing and more girls being lifeguards she's a role model to a lot of young women and she's a role model to a lot of awesome they love the lesson so I'm just gonna continue taking them so I fan yeah just showing them the ropes with a few different things and yeah it's so much fun as the seasons come and go at Bondi old faces make way for new ones it's been this way for over a hundred years what comes with this job is a huge amount of responsibility that there's the weight of history on your shoulders bond eyes circle of life begins with fresh-faced trainees life and death experiences transform them into expert water men and women now after 18 years service 64 year-old Harry H man Nightingale is calling it quits third-generation local Harry and his wife Jeanette are retiring to the south coast of New South Wales with the lifetime of Bondi memories this will be time for us to fall in love again and will be spent time holding hand walk on the beach tell you the truth I'm shocked he's retiring I think if you keep going until at least 70 and you know I'm gonna miss him like crazy he's had a fantastic career and he's done amazing things for the team in his career H has performed over 1500 rescues famous where is no-nonsense style of beach management signal for every scenario whether they be this kind of thing or that kind of thing I'm not gonna miss you on the megaphone Harry nightingale is the oldest ever lifeguard he definitely looks it is a unique man just you know to say the least I think there's one thing I won't miss is judging that they are you know the whole day of jazz music going on if H is in the tower I've got no Sun the radio that's jazz 24/7 and just getting these little trance I'm not gonna be missing our keep later today bond dies lifeguards are giving Harry the send-off of all lifeguards send-offs this afternoon we're gonna send up hating true Bondi style he won't believe what we've got in store for him [Music] lifeguards live by the same prevention is better than cure but some beachgoers simply can't detect backpackers rip Troy is warning a group of men for the second time once I drop off that ledge off they go I'm out going quick [Music] copy my yeah to that little section on in seconds the rescue increases from three to four as another swimmer course for healthy good see that looks scared the wrong guy was yelling come to me first the men ignored lifeguards about swimming here three men cling to the board as a fourth swimmer struggles nearby yeah my gig and a half to go in there really bad Troy heads in is back out he's got three on the board there you go for now then without warning a fifth man is spotted he's going under he had to get there pretty quick because ago I wasn't you know it wasn't in a good way oh man he's so fast to go under in the middle of a mass rescue with four men between them Yangtze and Troy spot for another victim he is going under he was in trouble he had to get there pretty quick because ago I wasn't you know it wasn't in a good way oh man he's so far to go Yesi grabs the man seconds before a wave washes him under times they just don't want to listen until they get their asses kicked in the water why did it happen she don't listen whether they're racing to rescues or dealing with life and death emergencies lifeguards raise their heart rates every day today though it's romance which has hearts racing at Bondi Stacey three years ago sort of hit it off from there and from that moment we knew that there's something special and at a winery two hours south of Bondi another single bond a lifeguard bites the dust Popo is famous for staying cool under pressure keeps things pretty close to his chest you know it's a big moment and I suppose a little bit of sweat starting to come on and just see how we go as might break me all the guys at the base of never seen hopper nervous he's really calm and collected but I think today you'll see him crumble that's my bet there are 35 lifeguards but only one could be best man we've been through a lot together over those years and known each other now for over 40 so it's you know I couldn't go past having him as the best achieve with friends family and lifeguards present it's the moment of truth there's no running the arm stuck I'm locked in up in there for the roller coaster rides stays come down I just looked at him he was just like he was nervous I was nervous for him probably found a bit harder than actually working on the beach this was something that sort of maybe a little bit weak at the knees well good afternoon welcome this iconic venue here on the South Coast states was there and she was reading her vows and she started tearing up and it's hard not to get the lump in the throat thank you for always supporting my hopes and dreams look across them a little I'll made their box and he had dribbling down his eyes so it didn't make me look that bad and this is proof to be true I looked at Stacey and she was crying and then I looked at hot and he had like tears in his eyes and then I looked in the front row and all the ladies are crying I went mr. Church reserved and then the celebrant kind of stopped for a second anyway right of YouTube definitely gives me great honor and privilege to the complete you both a hospital boy Papo you may now kiss your wife [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's the end of the season and pressure is mounting on trainees Jethro and Glick have they done enough to progress to the second year of their traineeships click beat Jethro in the underwater challenge but Jethro outclassed Gleek and the big surf both had their fair share hits and misses Popo has been observing the strengths and weaknesses of both trainees the weakness side of things you know sometimes maybe a little bit overconfident with things I know the speech pretty well I know I know what's happening I know when to when to come and rescue people you don't work more on technique sides of things because you haven't got that bridge strength tug the big black in now both rookies are getting a final chance to impress hopper there's a lot of pressure on it I guess and all the big bosses are watching so it's all on Glick and Jethro must drop the 45 kilogram mannequins beyond the waves then retrieve them on the board but Jethro suffers a serious setback I knew immediately something was wrong [Music] the way just push the dummy back into my finger and jarred it it was hurting a lot if he pulls out now Jethro will be handing victory to his rival Gleek look just sit okay and he was like nuts I'm going back out yeah that's it otherwise you know the glue could sort of Moreman handle dummy onto the bog I had the baby more technical on this it's a technique we use or we roll the board I told him I said to roll the board over and make it easier on him quick glides in the Jethro's ride isn't so smooth new kids Glick and Jethro are waiting to find out if they've done enough to secure positions on the service next year since I was a little kid I always thought of lifeguards I mean like are so inspirational seeing them seeing work the beach it pretty much has been something I've wanted to do throughout my whole childhood I mean we both want the job so bad this is the best job in the world okay guys boxing the team leaders and all I've been weighing up the best options for to move forward to the future and there's always a tough decision on which way we're going to go with different positions and everything so Jethro you know you performing very very well and what you've done over the last year has been really good and we're going to put you through and continue on with you try those ships congratulations the ether and Gleek of course we're tight you through as well it's a cruel welcome to the second year but neither trainee is complaining thank you thank you definitely the best news ever we had a bit of a chuckle after that was pretty funny there's perfect outcomes everybody kept on we've done a really good job overall I'm stupid about them you know I'd hate to see any of these are of glucan Jethro hit the beach for a lap of honour but as every senior lifeguard knows Bondi isn't the place to rest on your lives a swimmer in trouble has gone unnoticed by lifeguards in the tower [Music] [Music] fresh from their appraisal the pressure is on for the Chinese to deliver I think every member of the teams put a tick in each box and I'm happy for those the guys like he a comment in the tape you know fill in the gas [Music] just wait for help so I'm gonna go to have to see me up there thank you the boys have done a really good job the two trainees are teamed up and then right on the mall as two Koreas begin all right guys another one is coming to a close because I'm retiring at the end of this season the boys wanted to do a little meditation to that I'll see dog [Music] I look up and I see several of the guys coming down the face all with bronze skin and flesh colored caps and the head lays off the impersonations a testimony to the great man in the end there's only one Harry nightingale the voice sent me up to get big red and I've got up and come back they've lined up in the tunnel they've got me to run through with big red [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's like that's the best trophy I've ever had in my life it was a wonderful thing and plus my wife came down and so happiest I've seen Jeanette in a long time they're having a tribute to H surfing contest we want to get out we want to style it up for H and send him out in style the more hates like you are the more points you'll score mercy let's do it [Music] Bondi his lifeguards are saying farewell to a true hero Harry nightingale along with his two brothers was born into a surfing life his father salty Nightingale coached Australia's Olympic swimming team and was a bondi surf club legend Harry became one of bondas best board riders then traveled the globe today he still serves some of the world's most dangerous waves he is in the true sense of the word a legend a tribute to H surfing contest we want to get out we want to style it up for H and send him out in style the more hates like you are the more points you'll score first [Music] [Applause] [Music] the maneuvers whatever I've gotta wave and I kind of sat on the house and prayed like he does the thing we're trying to do is get one together and Bucky and I got a beauty after all the tomfoolery with the mock contest we took out the uninflated stand up [Applause] we got ace in the middle we just kind of sit in the middle like a god and that's not very often this chief same guys on this one surfboard [Music] [Music] no it's just comedy capers it was like Keystone Cops comes to bond I mean here we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] what an incredible afternoon unbelievable tribute to H man the joint winner with patreon box joint winners [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] all I could see were small it was just a really good night didn't give any in the garden megaphone he's the most beautiful soul in the world and he's the essence of bondo he always has these positive vibes that he sends out it dead-set makes you smile for the rest of the day when you work with [Applause] I still think there's heaps of room for him to improve it's just that they're gonna have to do it without me [Music]
