Bondi Lifeguard Tommy's Most Memorable Moments

before I was a lifeguard or work there's a carpenter but where else would you rather work than on the beach and capable people say you've got my dream job hopefully I'm here for another 40 years 21 year-old rookie Tommy is itching for his first major rescue he wants to prove to the team that he's cut from the right cloth but at Bondi be careful what you wish for [Music] [Applause] see thanks to deadly creatures we couldn't leave a cease thanks for me close to the flags now I'm the preferred option would be to get it out of the water completely just a few milligrams of sea snake venom is enough to kill 1,000 adults they're the most venomous snake in the world [Applause] Tommy's a young guy some of the newer members to the team are you get to impress you could say it's only after Tommy volunteers that he gets all the facts to posture the second Dane I said deadly that's where I realized I've um I messed up people have died from seasick boys it's a fact yeah I know just playing with deadly creatures I'm not scared of snakes at least I didn't think I was after quickly paddling out Tommy realizes he won't be catching the sea snake with his bare hands new lifeguard Jules has a solution Troy's going out to catch the snake where he's created music got Tommy in the IRB and he might scoop it up with the pressure mounting Tommy turns to his previous experience as a tradie Benny carpenter I knew there's a tool for every job and when I was in the boat I've seen the paddle and I was like that's the tool for this job he reached in and grabbed it with your and flicked it into the bucket job done like a true snake Wrangler capturing the sea snake and nobody harmed was the best-case scenario turns out I'm scared of snakes trainee lifeguard tommy is experiencing his first Bondi Christmas Christmas day I was so excited worked on the busiest beach in Australia on the busiest day of the year so much to be excited about yet to do a serious rescued Tommy is keen to impress head lifeguard hopper I'm gonna see a person out there in trouble with this young trainee next to me so I thought I'd give him a shot got halfway out I realize they're in a lot of trouble and I have to foot down and get to him he's the other at least four people are in trouble with one slipping below the surface I knew I just had to get to the one that doesn't have much time left in ER and as I got closer I just realized she wasn't even holding yourself above water anymore alone with four people on his rescue board Tommy's next decision will be critical once I had her my next four already was the other patient now we're gonna get back for patients more swimmers get into trouble nearby but Tommy is anchored down by the people already on his board Giambi's if you go in there as a cup of water they to be caught perfect timing Jessie shows out this gate what's going through my head at that point is said I'm going to get the people back to shore safely volunteer lifesavers back up in their inflatable rescue boat people coming from all angles the jet ski could wrong they go she was like dead white sighs she was really really hard to get on to the skate it looks terrible worst-case scenario if I roll this gay would be someone could drown I love watching Jesse on the jet ski is just impressive and there's so much to learn from him a nice jet ski skills [Music] Turkish tourists Mira is unaware this is the first serious rescue for rookie lifeguard Tommy Tommy's going really well down here he's taken things on straightaway and he's believing a lot in himself that's what I think a good lifeguard is you got to believe a lot in yourself and take yourself out of your comfort zone and he's doing these things and I'm really proud of him get the sled riding they're following niccola's direction Tommy Mike's a rescue but it's not the man Nicola is worried about there were two Indian blokes going under and I wasn't going for the one that Nicola was calling for the you know person I was talking about was completely underwater so I just had to run in man is held up by a nearby swimmer [Music] in that situation it wasn't a stuff up you know thank God he was detected rescue the other guy Nikolas absolutely amazing two men saved in a handful of critical seconds today a major international model is coming and she's ruffling feathers amongst the white guys yeah we're kind of thinking who is this we found out that it was the International supermodel Karlie Kloss today Vogue magazine have hand-picked some off-duty lifeguards for the shoot I said all our head shots are up on the channel 10 site so they went to that and complete the four faces out of the whole group so suppose we were lucky for the got peak Popo for this one I think had to call up the pretty boys making the cut starstruck training Tommy she's the nicest celebrity guys yeah her fame and stuff and how beautiful she is she's really nice not all the lifeguards share the excitement that is extras there nothing all the guys don't get kicked they're probably up there bagging the ends absolutely nothing that is props yeah Bjork couldn't work out why Tommy got a start you know it's the first years of training and I must have been his hairdo she didn't say that she wanted to be next to you because your hair were very similar I was a pretty gutted I went and got a special haircut for the shoot and I don't think it worked for Vogue [Music] have no idea where they chose those to us yeah we're working otherwise they would have used us with no box she liked my head she gave me a compliment that's know I've got 35 lifeguards to bag out my hair and watch super model that loves it so it's worth it Tommy Angela's first season down here at Bondi this rolls up I told him go get your wetsuit somewhere out there for Tommy and Jos the mission is simple to catch the biggest wave of the day and prove themselves to the older guys owner vez but it was really cool to have Jesse backing us in the water handling a rescue board in these waves requires perfect timing [Music] that was the biggest ham break I have ever seen but I do admit I didn't pull back on that one next it's Tommy's turn to impress the judges Oh Tommy Tommy I wanted to catch the biggest wave of the day you're the take off and survive yeah regret it massively fall off in the big stuff and you'll need more than just good board skills the Tommy wants another crack at the title I wasn't gonna let anyone beat me I was catching the biggest by that then that was [Applause] [Music] yeah [Music] I think tell me one the hay day it's gonna be one but she fell off Tommy was the only one to make it someone was Jionni we have to get it out there so it's good to practice Tommy's biggest goal is to master the art of the board rescue the art of doing a rescue is a skill that you take time to build up and it's just not an easy thing but the more you do it the easier it gets [Music] when you've got the patient it turns into a bloody circus out in the ocean you do get patients that are bigger than you and you've got a really manhandling to get them on the board well performed rescues earn recognition get it wrong and you can just about hear the laughter out in the water sometimes it doesn't look pretty but there's lots of ways to skin a cat you got to get him back to shore and you do whatever it takes to get him back in Tommy knows his every move is being watched Ron is in the tower and just gave away I call it a few heads down the South corner I realized pretty quickly that I had to move fast and get out there to him as soon as possible because he he wasn't the best swimmer tommy's in what I got him here was really tired he's breathing is heavy and didn't have much longer you need me out there when you get people on the board you tell them to play on your belly face the front and every now and then a little skinny kid like himself I saw just lay on your back that'll do when rescues go wrong a lifeguards pride isn't the only thing that can get hurt DVI advanced way back to shore then he sits up which caused a nosedive and this resulted in me getting your rescue boy straight to the balls I thought I know the balloons at pops got me good right in the meat into V so it's a screw that 15 minutes later Tommy gets a second chance to strut his stuff in front of the team it's just falling off the bat that Bank in the South corner yeah Hansbrough once an earring goes out we out we go straight away I wouldn't say I've recovered from my previous injury but duty calls [Music] see why Shalini now but to the Haitian and I realize he's a big bugger so I've got him on the board now and started paddling back and he comes away then I thought Beauty straight back to shore probably out half a second before the way here I thought oh this guy's a bit far forward actually [Music] in his quest to master the board rescued Tommy invents a technique of his own water and service and my first thoughts was how the hell did I just do that and I just felt this slow-motion leaps like the aircraft taking off I was up near the helicopters doing their tour guides around boy I thought I was pretty high but what goes up must come here every rescue you do down here and everything is a learning curve are you a 100 plus cos of highway 50
