Bondi Lifeguard Jethro's Best Rescues

down here we see people from so many different walks of life and it definitely makes you reflect and and realize how good our job is down here at the beach come on i have a friend uh out there he's maybe tired where is he he is straight ahead way out there what's he doing out there uh we went too far bondi central see that guy on the bodyboard it's about like 50 meters out he needs to help [Applause] [Music] every time i go for a rescue i get nervous because i know the boy's gonna be looking at me and going how's he gonna do are you happy with that yeah there's no way i've rescued anyone that far out it's a mystery why gino from texas is over 200 metres from shore i don't know how we've got out so far because there's no rips pulling him out but azza thinks he knows the answer what's he got a gopro on his board yes i'm not afraid he's kind of scary so what he's gone videoing himself ended up out the back most truthfully unaware filming himself we've been out here for a while as you can see i'm pretty sure the furthest i've ever been in the ocean do you think he's panicking right now or ah a little bit as well as being 200 meters from shore gino poses another problem for trainee jethro i got out there and the guy was at least doubled my weight he's a big texas guy who's about like six three maybe oh yeah she's 70 maybe the little lifeguard i've sent out there he's a trainee he's probably about 70 pounds what's your name thank you bro i struggled getting him on the board i think we might have rolled it twice so that was some negative points there not only does jethro have his work cut out but every senior lifeguard on the beach is watching this is going to take a while the best way to get him in was just him holding onto the rope and paddling humans toe technique it's a bit slow especially with a guy of that size [Music] it's a massive weight difference between jethro and the big texas dude he's his little chicken arms can't tug the big bloke in it's a hard rescue when you've got to paddle them in that far against the wind thank you man i was right here next to all these people and then i wasn't next to all these people there were some moments where i was i was cursing i was cursing myself well definitely at least a quarter of the way to new zealand there i've never seen anyone that far out tired let's not lay down and get a beer it's not about how you get him in it's if you get him in and he did that you succeed and so yeah good on him that's a paddle like really hard the whole time just to tell his weight behind me so it's a big there's just a workout in a rubber tube third ramp joshua's heading there now [Applause] um his hands gone up a small girl in an inflatable toy is being dragged out in a rip a bunch of men help despite being able to stand they're no match for the rapid flow of water pulling out to sea i didn't really know what was going on i saw a ring i saw five people and and arms waving when you're bouncing on the sandbank whether it be 10 meters 20 meters five meters it feels like you you've just started a 1500 meter race on a track and it goes forever it's like slow-mo and you can just see the patients going down in front of you it's the worst feeling ever when jethro finally reaches the creek they've moved into deeper water i could see that there was there was two asian gentlemen and a young a young daughter and obviously the one that was in the deepest trouble was the girl all right exhausted from paddling out jethro was caught off guard by a rogue wave jethro's board cleans up most of the swimmers including the small girl oh when i popped up there was only one above water so that was still underwater and i honestly thought i lost him [Music] a nearby surfer has snatched the girl up from underwater it's always confronting when you rescue young kids they're so helpless against the ocean [Music] saying earlier that little girl was so healthy [Applause] it's really hectic for a second now shaking a bit oh yeah she came in the door and she was crying she was saying i'm sorry and i was like what's going on here 21 year old victoria is a student from norway her severe peanut allergy causes anaphylaxis okay and have you had an allergic reaction before yeah is this what you're doing yeah left untreated victoria's throat will become so swollen she may be unable to breathe the worst case of anaphylaxis is you stop breathing and you die you could just wait a little bit and get some work yeah yeah the lifeguards best chance of saving victoria is via a shot of adrenaline from an epipen i've never jabbed someone with an epipen all right don't hold my hand just hold my hand yeah here we go when i had it in my hand i'll admit i was shaking i was like let me know a little bit all right here you're here ready that's it deep breath that's it breathe through it that's it good so i hit her with the epipen bang held it in for ten seconds and um i thought that was gonna be it it's gonna come good and she didn't okay so just come around on this side we'll just lift her up we're gonna lay it down on the ground yeah okay lay down sweetheart there we go stay with this you're right when she dropped on us i was so scared and i thought maybe this would be a recess get her on the side see just roll her over on her side there you go let's see you're right this situation takes harry's and jethro out of their death i was so scared because i knew how severe her allergy to peanuts was can you hear me i was seriously scared for her life jake yeah do you want to ring the amber and update it an ambulance has already been called but it's for a woman on the first aid bed suffering severe abdominal pain to make it more urgent because they were coming for stomach pain but now they come for this they're just dropping live flies let's see you're right victoria is barely breathing lifeguards must artificially respirate her using the oxygen yeah that's all right when she went unconscious i kind of thought she'd been through adrenaline now she's in shock can you hear me we put her on oxygen breathe her up a little bit what's your name eddie victoria gets oxygen now slowly and slowly she got better and and came to and that was that's a big weight off our chest as the oxygen reaches victoria's bloodstream she begins to recover [Music] and you know once she was in proper medical hands made me happy [Music] i cleared that area out before i came up about ten minutes there was a thought in the back of my head that like this is the first time you're gonna paddle real hard the fate of these two girls weighs on jethro's shoulders i could see that they were youngish girls and the fear was in their eyes they're both like crying eh they're little they should hurt i don't know where their mum or someone is they were screaming for help when i was paddling out so you just gotta go you gotta go hard they might not make jethro learns why the girls couldn't hear earlier warnings from lifeguards because they're deaf [Applause] they looked at each other in a weird way as if like to acknowledge what was going on and they worked together as a team and yeah never seen anything like it the young girls are sisters on shore harrison looks for their parents if i could hear the screens 50 meters away on the beach surely the parents could hear the screams it's the grandmother she's dead the grandmother has been trying to signal the girls for the last 10 minutes she was on the water's edge helpless she couldn't let anyone know that her kids are in trouble she couldn't run up to us you know she just started doing sign language to me and i felt my heart sunk a bit actually [Music] when you're out in the water here you know the seagulls are crashing off the waves they couldn't hear anything not being able to hear anything or knowing that the lifeguards coming to get you that's your worst nightmare i learned from school about rip and i thought it might be ripped so i do follow what teachers taught us to help you down here we see people from so many different walks of life and it definitely makes you reflect and and realise how good our job is down here at the beach thank you when you rescue two girls like that yeah it feels really good to send them home
