hi I'm Jay in this lecture I'm going to show you a three step method to describe any image you see in your PT II exam I'm also going to talk to you about how to increase your oral fluency score which is a big contributor to your overall speaking score at the end you'll have a chance to practice what you learn in this lecture overview in PP you describe image an image will appear in front of you you have 25 seconds to prepare to speak and then 40 seconds to describe the image the image may be a bar graph a line graph a pie chart or pie chart a combination of two different graphs like a bar chart and a pie chart a table of data a picture a process or even a map you will get six or seven of these types of images in your exam so you need a way to describe them you need a method method our method is going to have three parts an introduction key features and a conclusion let's look at the introduction introduction you should introduce the image by saying this image represents title plus x axis for example this bar graph represents literacy rates by country in 1990 and 2000 across six different countries for men and women this line graph represents oil consumption by area from 1985 to 2009 according to various countries these pie charts represent RSI factors both imagined and actual including biomechanics muscle overuse and more sometimes it won't be as easy as that and you'll need to be flexible describe image is all about thinking quickly and stayin calm the bar graph represents the number of calories eaten over a time period while the pie chart represents the calories by meal type this table represents various indicators such as income life expectancy calorie supply and literacy rates across four different countries this image represents housing inequality by showing slums a mansion and an expensive-looking apartment building this process represents how computers and electronics are recycled including five distinct stages this map shows an area of Africa that represents potential trans frontier elephant populations including known occasional or possible and past right so we now know how to introduce whatever image we see again it's this image represents title plus x-axis we learned that you have to be flexible and think quickly because all of the images will slightly differ let's look at the key features key features after the introduction you need to describe some key features of the image your introduction to take around 10 seconds to say and the key features should take around 20 seconds to say when describing the key features you just need to describe the most noticeable features whatever first pops into your mind remember keep it simple the more complex you get the worse your oral fluency will become because you will start to hesitate and um our and restart sentences just describe the easiest part of image here's what I have done Chinese males had the highest rates of literacy in the year 2008 just above 90% this was followed by a Brazilian men and Kuwaiti men Pakistani women had the lowest rates of literacy in 1990 which was followed by Bangladesh and Egypt oil consumption in the former Soviet Union declined over the given period in contrast the remainder of the country's oil consumption increased steadily Europe the US Japan and Australia's oil consumption increased slightly before receding in the year 2005 the highest rates of imagined importance included biomechanics inflammation and overuse despite this the actual importance included overuse muscle and head games inflammation had far less actual importance okay again I'm being flexible most importantly I'm staying calm I'm not hesitating restarting sentences or umming and ahhing even if I don't really know what the graph is showing I just keep calm and keep going the highest number of calories were eaten on the fourth of November the lowest number of calories were eaten on the seventh of September dinner accounted for the highest number of calories by meal type at 46% this was followed by snacks at 21% Japan had the highest income per person at over $15,000 annually Japan also had the highest life expectancy at birth followed by Canada Peru and Zayas literacy rates were comparatively low at 68 and 34 percent respectively the left-hand side of the image shows relative poverty compared to central and right side images while hundreds of people live in poverty on the left a single property takes up a vast amount of space the apartment block also represents relative luxury first the computers and electronics are disassembled this is done manually recyclable components such as metal and precious metals are taken from the computer after shredding granulating and being separated the parts are then reassembled into a computer much of Namibia Botswana and South Africa have no past range or present status a landmass between Namibia and Angola stretching eastward includes most of the known range of the elephant populations cool so we've stayed calm with kept talking and we've avoided hesitating stuttering and restarting our sentences it's a real trick and requires lots of practice let's now conclude our description conclusion after your introduction and key features you should have about ten seconds left in the PTA you can see the clock ticking down in the corner of the screen you need to pay attention to this because at about 30 seconds you should give a one-sentence conclusion that summarises the image you should start your sentence with overall so the computer knows that you're concluding your description overall the graph shows improvement in literacy rates in all countries and especially for women overall oil consumption has decreased for all countries mentioned while it is increasing for the remainders overall there is a vast difference between the imagined and actual symptoms of RSI overall while the number of calories fluctuated over the period meal types remains steady hmm is what I just said turret it actually wasn't but this brings up an interesting point and that is if you say something inaccurate don't worry keep going don't correct yourself don't restart your sentence because you don't want to decrease your oral fluency score overall Japan and Canada have high indicators while Peru and Zaire have low indicators overall there are significant economic differences between the three properties shown overall many computer parts are retrieved and recycled in a five step process overall poaching may have had something to do with the absence of elephant in the southern parts of Africa and we're done you should aim for about 35 seconds make sure you aren't still speaking at 40 seconds because your sentence will be cut in half and that's not good recap so how do you describe an image in the PTA well there are three parts introduce the image this graph represents the title plus the x-axis then you should describe some key features just choose the simplest most noticeable features you will not get more points for complexity you should concentrate on speaking smoothly at about 30 seconds you should give a single sentence conclusion that summarizes the image and starts with the word overall full example let's do a full example from beginning to end this bar graph represents literacy rates by country in 1990 and 2000 across six different countries for men and women Chinese males had the highest rates of literacy in the year 2000 at just above 90% this was followed by Brazilian men and qat men Pakistani women had the lowest rates of literacy in 1990 which was followed by Bangladesh and Egypt overall the graph shows improvement in literacy rates in all countries and especially for women questions okay we have a few questions from our eetu users Andre from Greece asks what verb tense should I use when describing the graph good question and it depends on the x-axis in the graph which usually represents years for example in this graph the x-axis is in the past so you will save verbs like increased or decreased with the IDI ending most of the graphs will be in the past so keep that in mind but for images and maps you should use present tense such as shows or depict etc okay next question is from Samira from Sri Lanka she asks what if I have no idea what the graph or image represents good question the key thing to know is that content is less important than oral fluency and pronunciation in other words what you say is less important than how you say it if you don't know just pretend and keep going the final question is from Ghulam from India he asks should we use the y-axis when describing the key features the answer to this is only if it's simple you don't want to get stuck in the y-axis but if you can quickly glance and get a number or a percentage than fine you can do that practice cool now it's time for you to practice go to e to language comm and sign up as a free user to access the free practice questions you'll be able to apply what you've learned in this lecture good luck you
