writing for the academic ielts exam so again you're sitting in your ielts test you've finished your listening section take took about 50 minutes you're finished your reading section that took an hour so you're pretty much you've been sitting for about two hours at this point and then the invigilators will start the writing section of the exam and the writing section has two tasks task 1 20 minutes task to 40 minutes task 2 is worth twice task 1. start with task 1. it helps you to get uh warmed up with your thinking with your writing okay um and uh and then you begin so you should spend about 20 minutes on this task now um just a quick review so academic uh i ielts task one writing about charts graphs diagrams what kind of writing is that members so what type of writing is uh task one in the academic ielts so task one academic ielts is and which gives you yeah janelle says it's an expository essay exactly so is an expository essay okay um now this is not something that i'm making up it's not my invention this is standard english literature okay um very good and i see and bakrat said it's an expository as well okay there are four kind of main categories of styles of essay writing so as we know one of them is expository and i like to remind uh members and of course teach new members about this every now and then so um task 1 academic ielts is an expository style essay what are the other three main styles of essay writing in english but i would assume that in many other languages it's kind of the same structure because it's sensible it follows a logical concept each of these so you have expository as one task two um okay uh jainal says narrative that's actually that's good janil narrative uh narrative is actually task one general ielts right okay and then uh june says persuasive is another style absolutely and i think it's important for every uh person to uh know this information in life because of course writing is one of our main forms of communication and understanding these basic principles is extremely useful for the ielts of course but for university and for life as well and then janil says and the fourth type is descriptive that's right so these are the four kind of main categories i mean if you're thinking about biology in biology we have some main categories of living creatures such as the kingdom of animals the kingdom of plants the kingdom of fungi the mushrooms and the kingdom of eukaryotes which are the celled organisms right so just like in biology how you have these kind of main categories of living beings and it's good to know these we learn these in school so too should we know these uh four main styles of essay writing okay now of course along with this you have three voices of the author right and again this is just main because within these you have sub categories so just like in biology you have species and family and genus you also have subcategories of essays so if you want to develop your writing much much further you can research the subcategories of different essay styles within these kind of main categories so the three voices of the author is another very important element and these are easy to remember because it's basically first second and a third person voice okay so easy to remember um i'm not going to explain these in detail now but you do need to know them for the ielts exam if you want to go for a band 7 band 8 or band 9 you have to have a very good understanding of first second third person voice of author okay importantly you never switch or it's very rare that we switch between or i should say among these voices in your writing okay because uh switching voice can create a lot of confusion which creates a problem with coherence with cohesion and then your mark goes down in the ielts exam okay so uh make sure that you know this task one academic is an expository essay in the third person voice okay if you're not at all clear on what these mean definitely start doing some research and some practice on this all right um now as the writer for uh task one what's your main goal okay so what's your main goal of the task one author is your main goal to describe what you see in the diagram or what you see on the chart is your main goal to give an opinion or is your main goal to interpret the data and the information so what is your primary objective for your task 1 expository essay and this kind of gives you an idea of what an expository essay is actually meant to do so um what do you what are you supposed to do in task one are you supposed to describe what you're seeing the data or the diagram are you supposed to give an opinion like we can clearly see that there will be way more of this in the future or are you meant to interpret the data so depica gineal natalie and rashika say you have to interpret and explain the data that's right um so your main goal just like as if you're giving a business presentation to a group of people isn't simply just to read to them the data so it's not just to describe you do describe so you do describe the the data what you see but your main goal is to interpret okay absolutely kyolin very good okay um so we do a bit of description and mainly we do a lot of interpretation we do not give opinion okay um that's actually a little bit different than when you're presenting when you're presenting data you might actually include an opinion but not when you're writing about a graph or a chart the reason why is because there's no chance for discourse so the reader can't ask you about your opinion like how did you come to that assumption or how did you come to that conclusion when you're giving a presentation that's where it's different because in a presentation your audience can ask you about that and then you can explain it so they can say well how did you how did you how do you figure that will continue to be this way in the future but not in your writing so it's a little bit different your main goal is to interpret so that's what we're going to do today we're going to look at some pie charts and we're going to interpret the data using some great language to get that high high band score okay all right so here we go ielts task 1 writing you should spend about 20 minutes on this task the following charts show several ways in which people access the news in two countries report the main features and make comparisons were relevant right at least 150 words band 789 essays are usually most of the time more than 150 words hint hint okay so here we have our two pie charts on the left we have canada on the right we have australia or i should say on the left australia on the right canada if we're looking at your perspective potentially or the perspective of the graph anyway uh you should not refer to the location of graphs in your essays i see this all the time and i i definitely want to make a note of that and speaking about left and right it's a good reminder so that's awkward whenever i did that in university or my professor always said don't do that adrian that's that's just weird and professionals don't actually enjoy that so much so do not refer to the location of the graphs on the paper so for example don't write things like the graphs below okay um or you shouldn't write something like uh uh the the chart on the left okay so again in this sense it's a little bit different than giving a live presentation all right um so don't do that okay i've seen many aisle students maybe one in every four or five ielts students do this where they go the the below charts depict and it's like well the examiner might not even see where the chart is so that's it's really awkward okay all right so don't do that all right um so again we have canada australia two pie charts we've got some nice big slices to the to these uh pies um can everybody see the percents clearly yeah i think you can okay so we've got 36 347 14. at this point we don't worry too much about the specific data we do care about the legend so here we can see that canadians australians they get their news from either the tv or radio perhaps from print like newspapers online the internet of course and not specified so we don't know it's a mystery so that's what we're reporting so we've got five different sources four known one unknown okay and now we can begin our writing at least the introduction okay so the introduction is a paraphrase as you know of the question uh with greater detail and this is basically the descriptive part of the essay so this gives the visual context to your reader so paraphrase the question with greater detail and remember that detail okay so let's do this together all right i'm going to do this and you do this as well so this isn't a very complicated graph today so i really want you to be fluent i want you to be quick with your writing focus on speed as well you do only have 20 minutes so you need to work on speed of writing as well as your speed of interpretation okay jyoti welcome back to our group of members okay so i'm going to write you right and then we'll we'll compare all right so there is my paraphrase with a bit more uh detail uh june has got the same going on let's see what june wrote here june says these two pie charts illustrate five different media namely television um broadcast paper uh internet and others through which individuals learn about the current affairs in canada and australia okay june that's good um june personally i probably wouldn't paraphrase uh these um uh category names for the introduction i would just keep them the same so it's really really clear you'll have a chance to paraphrase them during the overview or the analysis anyway but i would just for clarity for um ease of communication i would keep them the same in the introduction my suggestion is to do that in the test okay so start start your audience easy start them with the same information that you see and then start to paraphrase to give them a broader sense of what we're discussing okay uh depica says the the pie diagrams depict dapica be specific the two okay the two pie diagrams depict how uh people in canada and australia get to know the news the surveyed answers include tv radio print internet and others yeah okay and yeah even for others i was thinking about using others as well it's very close to non-specified but i figured i just used non-specified so again sticking to the same okay nick hill says these two pie charts illustrate the information about the proportion of five different sources tv radio print internet and not specified in which individuals get news in canada and australia nikhil it's very good just be careful with the word can get it's not their opportunity to get the news but that's the way they do get the news so on ielts they probably wouldn't hurt your score too much for something like that but in a university class especially a higher level university class like third year and above they would catch you on that so your professor would catch you on that word can and ding your your score okay so be careful to have very accurate information all right okay so this is what i have these two pie charts depict the five different news sources for australian and canadian citizens including the tv radio print online and not specified okay fine so that's my introduction now i want my overview so that's my next step here and as you know the overview is the most observable features it's kind of like the thesis for your essay okay and it's not necessarily most and least okay so don't always fall into that trap it could be so that could be important most at least um but not necessarily so when we look at these two pie charts um then we definitely see um some key features here uh what's what's the main feature that we notice here okay so what's the the main feature i definitely noticed something very clear here so there's there's something that jumps right out at me right from the beginning what do you think that is let's see if you catch the same all right and uh rashika dapika jainil good job on the introduction again nice and fast everyone so i'll catch different students at different times um so janelle says the yellow and blue pie for both are the largest slices yeah okay um sure i kind of and i i see that beyond that i see something else that's quite interesting uh depica says can we write citizens yeah depica absolutely because i mean if we want to be more uh technically accurate we could write residents um so australian and canadian residents people living there not necessarily citizens you're right but it's probably going to be citizens usually when they do surveys like this they check if it's a citizen but yeah if we want to be really technical residents i wouldn't get lost in that june says tv and online resources are the most popular buffett says two mediums are more used by people tv and online to get the news okay what i kind of notice here is a similarity these two pie charts are roughly similar in their distribution okay so you notice that we have these big slices here but also if we take a deeper look we can see that the gray slices are relatively proportionally large in both you've got these they're not the same numbers but the pies look relatively the same okay um does everybody see that so does everybody see that the source for news in canada and australia the distribution of these proportions is relatively similar i wouldn't say same but i would use the word similar in both countries okay you've got a bit of variance so it's important to realize that this is 36 this is 40. this is 52 this is 37 so you've got some differences but they share similarities in the distributions okay so you don't have like a tiny little blue slice here and a giant blue slice here you don't have like a massive gray slice here and a tiny little gray slice here okay so everybody sees that okay so that would be my main feature i mean when you're looking at two pie charts that kind of look the same if we didn't you know if we wouldn't have these numbers here you'd have kind of a tough time telling the difference between these two right so that's what you want to report on and then you can say with online and tv being the most popular in both countries okay so that's how i would do it okay so let's report these main features and then we'll get more into um the analysis okay right so i'm going to write it you write it okay um so here is my overview all right at first glance it is immediately apparent that the proportion of news sources in both canada and australia are similar with television and the internet being the primary uh means of accessing the news in both countries furthermore print is the third most used source of news information while radio is the least aside from non-specified now non-specified is different from other because other means that it's not tv it's not the internet but we don't know that so non-specified could include one of these as well so pay attention uh to that okay all right so we can report the slight differences later okay now june says there is only slight differences in tv and non-specified while other news sources show relatively more variations it's a little bit confusing for me june you might want to rethink that so when i read it anyway for me it's slightly confusing perhaps for somebody else it would be very clear but not me all right depica says it is noticeable that people of both countries have similar sources for knowing about current affairs yeah very nice paraphrase of the news current affairs um uh online mode of news is the most popular way um actually it's not so be careful with that um online news is the most popular in uh australia but in fact in canada uh tv is slightly more popular than in australia you have four percent more um for tv than for online okay which is almost insignificant when you look at these two big pies but you have to be very careful with accurate information okay and on the ielts they'll as long as it's not a huge mistake they'll let it go you probably won't lose marks but in university you definitely will for making information mistakes okay all right um nick hill overall it is noticeable that the percentage of news sources in both nations are in similar proportions both internet and television are the dominant news sources for providing the news okay for providing current affairs if you don't want to repeat the news while radio is the least june writes immediately it is clear that the percentages of people accessing the new sources are similar between canada and australia furthermore tv and the internet are the most popular means yeah very good okay so here's mine again at first glance it is immediately apparent that the proportion of news sources in both canada and australia are similar with television and the internet being the primary means of accessing the news in both countries furthermore print is the third most used source of news information while radio is the least aside from non-specified now this kind of additive information where i use the parentheses you have to be careful with it only use that if you're sure and if you have time it's not necessary so if you are um not sure about this just leave it out okay oftentimes i see students using the parentheses also known as brackets okay avoid use of brackets or parentheses okay so some students think that using brackets makes their writing look fancy or more academic but in fact if you ask your english literature teacher they will say that brackets should be avoided in writing whenever possible okay so they're only used in very specific contexts all right so don't use brackets if not necessary all right okay now we look at the analysis okay and the analysis before you start doing this you want to indicate some points okay analyses plural this is your body paragraph okay and in your body paragraph you want to rank order most to least important okay so let's do this so i'm going to go with one here one here compare online okay um two and then two here okay um three and then three here okay um four and then four here and maybe five if i have time for non-specified [Music] it's not absolutely important these are much more important okay so here we have 36 36 percent of canadians so 36 instead of saying 36 how would we better express that to our uh reader okay so rather than saying 36 percent of canadians got the latest um news from online sources or online uh medium so how would we say that yeah so june says just over a third so over one-third and here um we have 52 for australians so how would we express that um so that we're getting more points for our band score in the isle so how would we express 52 percent uh jyoti around one third is okay as well so around one-third or slightly over if you want to be very specific you can go slightly slightly over one-third right okay nick hill very good over a half or slightly over half right or just over half that's right okay um so let's do that and then let's keep flowing so now i want to again build some more fluency while we write so here we have 40 percent so 40 percent is a little bit more um it's a little bit greater than um internet which is tv for canada and then um here we have 37 which again is over a third which is less than the internet but um it's also a significant chunk okay um now here we have 14 for canadians getting the news through print like magazines or newspapers but here in australia we have seven percent so how would we report the difference between uh 14 and seven percent what would you say when you compare australians getting their news from newspapers and magazines versus canadians how would you say that yeah very good so twice the proportion right so twice the percentage now the population of canada is about um 35 more than australia so it's not the twice as many people but it's twice the proportion of people right in fact it would be a lot more people because canada has more people so you have to be really careful not to report numbers when you're talking about percents or proportions that everybody catch that that's very important okay especially in university or god forbid in when you're doing business in a company you have to be really careful about that because you could make a really really expensive mistake okay so be careful about that all right and then um of course we have radio and in radio it's seven percent there and i think it's only two percent there so you've got over three times the multiplier uh for um radio okay all right so everybody's got this i think now let's start writing this okay let's start putting it together i'm going to write nice and fluently i will look up at the chat and i will check different members writing at different times just to make sure you're on the right track and you're not making some big mistakes or at least we can correct those mistakes and uh and then we'll get to the end of this analysis so start with the internet so internet television okay let's start with those two all right nick hill says yep daniel says yep all right cool okay so okay now here notice how i don't have any given year so it doesn't say 2010 or 2021 so when you don't have the year given it's best to use the present general tense okay so present tense so going into further detail slightly over a third of canadians use the internet uh too okay so there's the analysis i just kind of quickly wrote that down let's see what you've come up with i can guess that you're all writing just like i was or maybe you're looking at me writing but i hope you're not just looking at me writing you're also kind of thinking about this yourself as well especially members that have been with me for quite some time so nick hill jaineel june depica rashika you should be thinking about this and writing it on your own first and then referencing what i write and seeing if you agree or disagree and hopefully sometimes you're thinking well adrian that's okay but i think you could have done better so i'd like to see that as well okay so here is my analyses going into further detail slightly over a third of canadians use the internet to know about current affairs while just over half of australians use this medium for their news in contrast three percent more people in canada get the news from tv than online however in australia this proportion is at a third of the population furthermore twice as many individuals in canada use printed medium for catching up on news as australians at 14 and i should use a comma there so it's not confused with australians in addition more than three times the proportion of canadians stay up to date on the news through the radio than australians at seven percent and two percent respectively okay so this means that seven percent for canadians and two percent for australians okay all right uh ranjit welcome to our group of members make sure to send me an email so i can hook you up with those perks those videos the uh requests and practice exams okay so i hope everybody is with me so far all right i'm gonna go and jump ahead here a little bit and discuss the summary so especially if the pies or the charts are a little bit simpler it might be a good idea to include a summary especially if you haven't gone over the 20 minutes summary is something that we can clearly interpret and see in the graph once we have worked through the introduction overview and the analyses and it's definitely valuable okay so start thinking about the summary gineal and nick hill so janelle says after deeper inspection more than a third of canadian people use online platforms to get current affairs while more than half of australian people do the same to stay up to date yeah careful with wordiness janil i think you could take out a few parts of that um uh those phrases or those sentences and it would still make good sense but it would be more concise so watch uh watch your uh concise writing jainal okay so nick hill at deeper inspection just over a third of canadians get current affairs using the internet as we're slightly over a half in australia do the same okay nikhil do the same on the contrary three percent more individuals in canada get the news from television than using online in australia just over a third of the population do the same or use this medium okay so finish that sentence all right um but nice so nick hill you you kind of have the opposite of gineal so we want to kind of mix the two so you're being concise but you're being so concise that you're missing the action verb for some of the information okay all right um june writes in more detail over a third of canadian citizens access the news via the internet slightly less than the proportion of people watching television to get the news at 40 percent which is the most popular medium however more than half of australian people use online tools to learn about the current affairs while tv is the second most popular at 37 june i think that's very nice clear concise writing good job okay thumbs up okay uh depica says you missed mine you were that quick to peek i didn't see it all right um i don't actually see yours depica in the chat i'm just going back but i don't see it you have to know members and students that sometimes youtube will filter some of these messages so it's not on our end it's nothing to do with me but depict i just scrolled up and i couldn't see anything okay i see a bit of rashikas over a third of people use the internet as a news source in canada while over half of people see the news online in australia and that's great rashika that's some really nice writing for the first point as well i love the paraphrasing okay all right everyone uh so the summary let's get into the summary and it's a summary it's not a conclusion so don't write in conclusion right in summary okay so in summary there are noticeable differences in the proportions of the various uh mediums used by uh either canadians or australians to get the news nevertheless the overall trends appear synonymous okay so i would write something like this for the summary in summary there are noticeable differences in the proportions of the various mediums used by either canadians or australians to get the news so this basically means that well yeah we can clearly see it's going to be down below here so we can see that there's differences right it's 36 versus 52 i mean that's pretty big that's um a 16 difference or we have 14 versus seven right but the trend overall so if we add together online and tv then we have 76 here if we add together um the online and the tv then we have 89 so the overall trend is the same okay so that would be my summary here right yeah we have some differences but the trend looks the same okay or is synonymous synonymous me is kind of like similar here okay all right um so that is my task one hopefully band9 essay definitely on the right track for it and that's what you want to practice so focus on understanding the techniques of expository writing using the third person voice okay using nice paraphrasing and interpreting the data for your audience so interpreting and explaining the data for your audience to learn lots more and to see many more videos for maps for bar graphs line graphs flow charts visit aehelp.com check out your full course there and check out the examples in the full course in the task 1 writing section for task 1 writing for the general outs visit glshelp.com sign up for the courses there it's well worth it again it's just a one-time payment continuation from speaking part two the class that we covered yesterday if you missed it don't worry because we're going to take a quick look at the speaking part 2 response at the start of the class okay so excellent work depica i just read your summary it looks good okay keep it up and hopefully i'll see all of you soon i'm adrienne i'm signing out from victoria briefly for half an hour bye for
