alright so again task 1 right now followed by a task to finish for yesterday's class so it's a great day for practicing your writing okay the right strategies and then tomorrow we will have a speaking part too speaking part 3 combination so a members chat will be the part 2 and then the all chat class will be the part 3 so that's the lineup for tomorrow students again of course this is an English class I can see you you can see me you can hear me I can't hear you I can see what you're typing on my big screen in the backdrop so but definitely speak ok so use your verbal English as well read aloud repeat when I say something interesting or when you hear me say an expression or an idiom write it down repeat it ok so practice practice alright let's take a look at today's question here shrink this a tiny touch ok so here we go you get to your writing section you open up the booklet or if you're in the computer-based exam you'll see it come up on the screen and then you see this kind of a question IELTS task 1 writing you should spend 20 minutes on this task the diagram provides information about several vehicles registered in Australia in three years report the main features and make comparisons where relevant Sobek John asked me to teach this class today it was a good request by BEC John definitely an interesting kind of table question so students when you read this task one your very very first step is to write the overview okay now it's at least 105 keywords I still got an email yesterday from someone asking if it's okay to write more than 150 words because some books say that it's not that's not true it's it's unfortunate that people write that kind of information for IELTS students because it's not true it's very clear the instructions write at least at least in English means minimum it's a synonym for minimum so a minimum 150 words it doesn't tell you the maximum you can fit about 200 220 words easily into the space that's given as long as you're not writing with huge letters in the paper based okay so hi Ben Ben 7 to 9 will probably go over the 150 words by about 30% so about 200 220 words for sure okay so the overview another strange piece of information that people are teaching out there is to separate the introduction from the overview that's really weird because the overview and the introduction again they're synonyms so when you say overview you're kind of saying introduction at the same time Zhi Shan Khan welcome to our group of members thank you for joining send me an email later today and I'll hook you up with those exclusive videos okay so the overview which is let me feel like this overview aka the introduction has two parts okay so two parts let's do it like this two parts okay one is paraphrase the question with more details okay and then to is report the most obvious information and here I'm gonna give you another piece of advice I know some of you who are regular students know this but many of you don't this is not necessarily it could be but it's not necessarily the most and least okay just remember students that for task one in the academic the outs examiner's read way too many essays that start the overview with the most and the least so if you can find another main feature that seems more interesting definitely mention that it will immediately make your essay stick out from the rest so you will really kind of start on the right track to a better band score in the writing section especially because it's at the very beginning of the writing did everybody catch that members I'd like to see a couple of thumbs ups or yeah I get that because I really want you you know I I know a lot of students started getting ready to write their exams these days and I want you to catch that tip because that's a really important little trick or tip and again this class today I mentioned to you that the title so I do title these it's tricks for tables but this is a trick for other types as well make sure that the main feature isn't necessarily the most in the least so try to seem a little bit different than everybody else if possible okay alright good I see some thumbs up coming up Samuel says got it Buju sasquatch awesome okay cool so that's important all right so this is not necessarily the most in the least all right let's do this overview together so let's take a look of course at the table first so one more time the question we'll take a look at the table and then we compare a phrase with details so the diagram provides information about several vehicles so when we see several vehicles we know we can give more details they're registered in Australia in three years okay three years we know we can give more information their report the main features and make comparisons were relevant okay cool so here we have our table all right hopefully that's clear for everyone I do try to make these as clear as possible so in the first column okay it's very important that we know the names of these characteristics of a table this is a column mind the silent n on column make sure you spell it correctly this is a row okay make sure you note that piece of information and if you're looking at just one here like this this is called a cell especially if you're using Microsoft Excel you'll know that so cell or a box okay if you're referring to the table all right now don't refer to the table too often but if you are then use this vocabulary column row cell box of course this top row would be the title row okay all right so here we have the types of vehicles we have passenger vehicle commercial vehicles motorcycles heavy and light trucks okay and then here we have 2010 2012 2014 so we have intervals of two years okay note this vocabulary intervals that's a good word to know here alright and then in the final column we have a percent change from 2010 to 2014 so the last column is a comparison between this and this okay not between 2012 and the others so careful with that okay all right so now for the overview of course we have to be careful not too much let's do this together so again passenger commercial motorcycle heavy and light trucks 2010 twelve fourteen percent change okay alright so let's go back to the overview and here's the original question I'm gonna erase this vocabulary hopefully you wrote that down if not don't worry about it you can review the video again later all right of course all of this vocabulary we teach in a lot of detail on our website so if you have access to the website make sure to pay attention to that part of the interactive lessons okay so here we go the diagram provides information about several vehicles registered in Australia in three years report the main features and make comparisons were relevant go ahead students and write the paraphrase here I'm gonna do the same okay so so I'm guessing this is the number of these vehicles right so this is the amount of these vehicles all right all right so there's my start to the overview I'll explain it in a moment Ayane says the diagram presents data on five different vehicles listed in Australia for the following years 2010 2012 and 2014 and the changes that occurred measured in percentages yeah Ayane simplified and the percent change between 2010 and 2014 so be specific there Ayane because it's 2010 to 2014 as I was emphasizing that okay a nice use of the - Ayanna to add that information 2010 after 2010 Ayane put a space before 2012 and put a another - after 2014 okay if that's not clear send me an email with that and I'll clarify Beck John says the given table illustrates five kinds of vehicles registered in Australia in three years twenty ten twelve and fourteen as well as the overall percentile change over the period yeah okay again Beck John careful it doesn't show the percentile change of 2012 so it's more just between 2010 and 2014 which is okay all right it's okay dr. Krishna says the given table delivers the details about the difference in various registered vehicles in Australia in alternative years from 2010 to 2014 okay Charlie says the given table depicts the information about the five different types of vehicles registered in Australia in three specific years with intervals of two years and then it's not ie charlie in that case that's Latin I always forget what it means but it's different meaning comma 2010 2014 10 2012 2014 okay so just comma after years charlie okay michael says the given table shows the amount of different transportation types registered in Australia from 28 ten to twenty fourteen with intervals of two years pointing out the key features and making comparisons you don't need to paraphrase that in the overview Michael the last bit there that's fine I get what you're saying but that's clear you just want to do that for task two Michael so you're clear on the specific question because in task 2 it will change but in task 1 it always says the main features and make comparisons okay alright pooja the table reports details of the number of vehicles registered in three consecutive years in Australia it's not accurate Pooja okay to two mistakes in that very first sentence pooja number one don't express the location of the table on the paper or on the computer screen so don't say the table below that's awkward for the reader because they might not even be looking at it okay so just say the table reports also it's not consecutive years because consecutive means that it's the year that follows right after so consecutive years would be like 2010 11 and 12 but we don't have that data here we actually have every other year so careful that's an information mistake and that's coherence mistake pooja so that drops your score so careful especially in the first sentence okay it also compares the number of these three automobiles in the form of change in percent from 2010 to 2014 to complex pooja so that's a rewrite okay Jenny o says the given table illustrates the five types of automobiles passenger vehicles motorcycle heavy truck commercial vehicles and light trucks enlisted in Australia good try Jenny Oh with the enrolled enroll is more for humans for people we enroll in courses or we enroll in university in this case enlisted is better put on to a list enlisted enrolled and not so much for objects okay good try though Jenny oh that's a very tricky little difference between enrolled and enlisted I could be wrong but I enlisted is better I think then enrolled okay all right Zita hats AG says the table shows data about the five types of vehicles used and registered in Australia in three years 2010 twelve and fourteen as well as the percent change Zita don't really use brackets so much use commas instead students use way too many brackets in task one you don't need to do that okay also Zita data is plural okay students you should know that the word data is plural okay and the singular for data is data or datum as some people say okay so data is an irregular singular plural data me use quite rarely when you get into university in science you might use this word a few times but most of the time you're using the plural that's why many people don't realize even native speakers the difference between data and data or datum depending on where you're pronouncing it but that is the difference okay all right so no data okay that's awkward and that's a mistake okay students let's keep moving along if I missed yours don't worry about it I'll catch it next time just an important little tip here okay so here is my paraphrase with some details so this table gives data about OOP a mistake about and correct that always correct when you catch your mistakes this table gives data about the number of five vehicle types a passenger vehicle now notice here how I wrote passenger vehicle and then I wrote PV okay and then I wrote commercial vehicle CV in brackets and this is where you use your brackets motorcycle M heavy truck HT and light trucks LT okay so let's keep these all plural okay we want to have parallel grammar make it even better so what I'm doing here with the brackets is I'm telling the reader in this case the examiner and you will use this in college and university and in professional writing okay when you have a lot of verbal data like this that's very long commercial vehicles then in the beginning you want to abbreviate these different variables because in the SI you don't want to keep writing commercial vehicles motorcycles heavy trucks it's too much time to keep writing all of those words and it's awkward in the writing so what happens especially in academic writing is the first time that we use these words we show the abbreviation that we will use in the rest of the essay with just the two letters like this I just took the first letter of each word so I made it into my own acronym and then I can just write CV every time I want to say commercial vehicles for the rest of the essay it's gonna save me a lot of time to write a better essay and space especially in the IELTS that's a really important tip okay so if you come across a task one question it could be a table but it could be a bar chart or a line chart where you have a lot of word heavy data that you're going to use over and over in your writing you should use this trick where you show the abbreviation and then just use the abbreviation is that clear so that can really help you to start the right way and get a better band score is that clear students again I like thumbs up there or yeah I got you because that can make a big difference in your task one score and the amount of or the effectiveness of your writing okay dr. krishna says yep I got you and I and I'm guessing that many of you who already did a bit of university work you probably have seen this before in writing okay all right cool so I'm getting some thumbs up excellent Diana says I finally understand the reason for acronyms yeah yeah it's so that we don't have to use all that space and time okay so that's how you do it and you have to do it the first time not later but the first time so it's good to do it right at the very beginning okay alright so here we go with the second sentence of the overview which is the main feature all right so what is the main feature in this so what is very very observable in the the table here okay what do you notice right away okay so what's the what's the most observable feature okay I don't think it's most okay so Samuel says a lot of passenger vehicles yeah definitely so all of those zeros that's very that pops out at you right so boom this whole thing here with the passage okay that's that's definitely one that pops out at you and Pooja very good so pooja says this 30% yeah all right great so that would be your main feature these two okay so right the next part of your overview and indicate the main feature don't get into numbers just use clear words okay in the overview you really don't need a lot of numbers the very rare situations where you need a number in the overview okay Beck John says that first glance that is noticeable that passenger and commercial vehicles number relatively more than other types I'd leave the commercial vehicles out of it Beck John because even compared to passenger vehicles it's still five times more than commercial vehicles for passenger vehicles so I'd leave commercial vehicles out of it I just focus on the passenger vehicles okay all right Rajveer this isn't the sale of vehicles careful with that you're saying sale but this is actually how many vehicles are registered the number of vehicles sold in a country in a year would be very different okay Australia has a population of about eighteen million people if I'm not mistaken so I guarantee your reg fear that they did not have this many sales in that year not even close because that would mean everybody basically bought a new car in each of these years okay so careful with that with information reg beer so this is registered vehicles okay all right Ayana says all the vehicle types listed increased from 2010 to 2014 Ayana that's brilliant okay yeah so if we see here that there's 11 million 13 million two point three two point seven five four so it's all pluses here that's definitely a really interesting feature Ayanna and it's a main feature so good for you okay alright very good nice so for that bad nine brilliant student thinking like Ayane and combining it with these other two pieces of information your overview could read something like this and then I'll look at what you're writing as well so Samuel I'll come back to yours in a moment very good so it could read like this at first glance it is notable that all five vehicle types increased and let's see if that holds true Ayane for 2012 as well right so we can see that from 2010 to 2012 all of them increased I can see that at a glance okay slight increase there but still an increase and then between these years so every two years it's an increase okay so don't forget that there's that 2012 there as well okay so at first glance that is notable that all five vehicle types increased in numbers every two years given among these the largest volume registered was PV and the greatest change was with M okay so I'm already using those acronyms all right so this is your band 9 level approach to your academic writing alright we'll review that in a moment I'll take a look at what you're writing as well okay so these are the main features you don't have to get all of them do you need to write exactly like this to get a band 9 maybe not you might be able to take out one piece of information but pretty close okay if you're going for what's called an expert user of English in the academic IELTS this is pretty close to what you have to produce for your introduction okay just so you're aware and you can do it okay some people that I call if that's impossible but it's not impossible you can okay just takes a bit of practice so Samuel says that first glance it is evident that the number of vehicles of all types have steadily increased I don't know about the word steadily Samuel but definitely increased with motorcycles seeing the largest change over the four years okay Samuel yeah that works sure I think that works so you didn't write about the passenger vehicles but that's okay I still think you caught the main features for sure okay Charlie says that first glance that is clear that the number of PV is significantly higher in the mentioned three years also the positive hike in all vehicle types over every two-year interval very good charlie it's a beautiful main feature okay Daniel Tarasov says at first glance it is quickly noticeable that the number of registered motorcycles has largely increased by as much as 30 percent which represents the biggest spike in popularity among other vehicles Daniil that sentence should come into somewhere in the beginning of your next paragraph okay because you're going into details so you're comparing motorcycles to other vehicle types you're naming the exact percent change okay so that would be better in the next paragraph all right don't need to get into 30 percent yet that's what I mean students you can explain the detail of your main feature in the next body paragraph this is kind of like think about it students as the thesis statement so the main feature is like the thesis statement of your expository essay and then that goes into further explanation in the next step and then followed by more details okay so cool alright so that's what we're gonna do now we're going to analyze and then now we're going to and then we're going to write the body paragraph cam it's multitasking here sometimes I get lost in my words alright so here we go let's analyze that's always the next step okay before you start writing analyze so we know that this is number one okay number two you can't possibly discuss all of this information alright so number one would be this now here's another trick okay four tables so now should I compare passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles to motorcycles to heavy trucks to light trucks and every year and start listing that no for a couple of reasons one it would be awkward to read for somebody trying to understand your analysis number two it's two mechanical it's like a robot okay that's not it's a computer it's not what we need to do here and number three it could get really long okay so your si could get really really long and just awkward to read so four tables when you're looking at a table you can what do what's called intelligent summation or intelligent addition okay to see more information so here is a nice trick because again I said that today I will show you some tips and some tricks to do better for this kind of question okay yeah Jenny oh so we want to roughly total the information here so what we want to do is we add the information in these years okay just roughly just a rough estimate an approximate please don't start doing math okay so some people like okay zero zero zero zero and just a sec I'll turn the camera back on even my camera thought that was too much so so don't do that don't do exact mathematics number one it takes a lot of time unless you're a math whiz and it's unnecessary okay you got a little bit of a gentle mental break with a picture of my daughter Sibella on the desktop all right okay so do a little summation here BEC Jen I'm not sure what you mean by if we give the date 2011 can we sum all of the vehicles there's no 2011 here maybe you're referring to something else BEC John all you want to do is just do a little bit of simple summation here so 2.3 plus 11 is roughly why it's 13 1 we can figure that out 13 1 and then we have roughly another let's say 1 million here or yeah roughly right so we have about 14 million okay if we want to be just really approximate okay and then here we can see that there is an extra million ok 300,000 so 1.3 extra plus a hundred thousand right so this is about fifteen point five let's say roughly and you should be able to do quick math like that okay now here we have thirteen fifteen point seven plus another one point one is 16.8 so about 16.9 let's say maybe some of you are better yeah so I'm looking and it looks like many of you are on the same page as me okay to do is it 17 and 2012 let's see two points 15 16 16 point 1 roughly sorry it looks like 16.1 okay so yeah you have to have somewhat close math but again it doesn't have to be perfect okay so sixteen point one and sixteen point nine seventeen something like that you could you could do it like this okay just to make it clear for the reader fourteen sixteen seventeen all right now when we do this summation what else do we notice students what's an interesting piece of information that's revealed to us when we sum the columns in this table I just realized something by doing this summation you probably did too what is an interesting piece of information that we realize and so it's sometimes a good idea to do this before you write your overview even because you can get into some more interesting writing as we've just discovered what is that so what is the interesting piece of information that we've discovered by doing this quick summation I would say that yeah sorry this is 15 okay I think somebody corrected me there that's great yeah that there's roughly a 1 million increase for every 2 years ok remember this is 2 years right so it's 1 million plus vehicles each 2 years in this case ok so roughly a million yeah and you all notice that that's fantastic ok very very good all right ok so that could actually be a main feature as well right the rate of change over these time periods ok all right so let's indicate so our number one are the vehicles ok so that would be so what I would do for number one data is compare this to the total and then number two maybe this change number 3 this is actually even more detail so now that I see this I would probably name this number 3 and make this number 2 ok so 1 million every 2 years so 1 2 3 and then we can get into some other numbers as well which become less important okay like number four would be commercial vehicles are clear second and then light trucks maybe are the least so that's kind of interesting and then semi-interesting are motorcycles and heavy trucks of course after this comparison here at number 6 but most important are the passenger vehicles compared to the totals the change in total numbers of vehicles registered the greatest and lowest change here that could be 4 as well and then the least amount would be the less interesting ok hopefully that makes sense all right ok so let's let's do this okay let's start by number one so number one so it's fifteen sixteen seventeen million roughly okay let's say which makes sense it's roughly the population of Australia as well in those years so let's start with number one with vehicles okay so vehicles eleven point eight out of fourteen 12 out of 15 13 out of 16 so think about that think about that proportionally and give me your first sentence okay so important trick some the values of the columns or rows sometimes as well okay all right puja says taking an insight PV has extensively more registrations by at least five times with eleven thousand eleven point eight million registrations in two thousand eleven contributing to 80 percent of the registrations in that year okay good and puja you can actually say that for every other year okay so Samuel says going deeper the number of PV have nearly 80% of total vehicles registered in each of the four years yeah very good okay nice now we can start that by this okay so here's our analysis or analysis for plural okay mm-hmm and write it so the examiner knows what you did okay you're gonna get band scores you're gonna get points when you write this kind of a start so by summing each of these columns it becomes evident that PV because it's an acronym use the capital letters okay I should have used those in the brackets as well okay so by summing each of these columns it becomes evident that pv had about 80% of all registrations in each year given 11.8 12.7 and 13 million respectively okay now I'm gonna go into number two and keep writing with me students so we explained it you know what's going on just keep writing I'm going to keep checking back and seeing how you're doing as well okay furthermore the addition of columns reveals an increase of about 1 million plus vehicles registered in Australia every 2 years from 2010 at 15 million 2012 at 16 million and 2014 at 17 million guarantee if you're writing like that you are getting banned scores okay Daniel Tarasov says analyzing the given information and appears that PD constitutes the majority of registered means of transportation in Australia in each presented year which is eleven point eight twelve point seven comma and thirteen million respectively period Daniel very good very nice BEC John says by summing the number of vehicles in each column further insight can be gained PV made up the majority of vehicles in Australia in each year very good BEC John that's your high level writing okay all right so so far so good now I'm going to get into my most and least change in this time period motorcycles at 30% is the most and heavy trucks are the least with 8.3 percent okay so I'm further now Lass's reveals that indeed there was an increase in the use of M by 30% from 2010 to 2014 which was the greatest change among these vehicles as where so this is a type of connective to show contrast as where the least change was with heavy trucks at just over 8% okay all right now at this point if I count this up see how many words I'm at okay so right now I'm at about a hundred and seventy words seventy-five I would say okay so I'm at about a hundred and seventy five words now if I'm AB and nine and I'm really fast I might throw in one or two more quick sentences but I don't need to write a lot more okay because I've already reached my 150 minimum and I definitely don't want to take time from task two so here I need to check my time I need to make sure that I'm not over that twenty minutes if I'm at 20 minutes boom I'm going to task two if I'm a really quick writer and good at analyzing then I can maybe fit a little bit more in and say something like as well commercial vehicles were the second most registered in each of the given years making up about what is it about 10% no maybe a little bit more about 15% of the total number in each year leaving the remaining 5% split among the other three vehicle types okay all right so I can stop there now I definitely suggest writing summary okay and for the summary you should include a piece of information that is not necessarily new but it's something that we can learn from this graph okay so what can we learn the percent change varies among these five vehicle types and it's all increasing right so something like that okay so summary is a good idea it's not a conclusion you're not giving your opinion okay you're just adding one sentence maybe two in some cases but one sentence is enough so although all five vehicle types and you can start with in summary or to sum up although all five vehicle types increased in numbers in the given years the percent change varied significantly by vehicle type okay so that's how I would sum that up because you have 8% 10% 17% 25% so you can see that there's quite a bit of variance here ten seventeen thirty eight twenty three but I'm not going to indicate all that okay alright so this is what a band 9si would look like for this kind of a table question let's read it make sure it makes sense so again one quick little correction here when you do the acronyms do them capital it looks better okay PV C D so the tricks that I showed you today one is use these acronyms so that you can be more efficient also make sure to sum up the columns and rows if it makes sense it doesn't always make sense to do that but oftentimes it does alright and don't just look at the most and the least because oftentimes there's more interesting information than most in the least and if you pay attention to these tricks that I just showed you or these tips you can definitely improve your task one score okay all right here we go read with me this table gives data about the number of five vehicle types passenger vehicles PV commercial vehicles CV motorcycles M heavy trucks HT and light trucks LT registered in Australia in 2010 12 and 14 as well as the percent change in 2012 compared to 2014 at first glance it is notable that all five vehicle types increased in numbers every two years given among these the largest volume registered was PV and the greatest change was with M by summing up each of these columns it becomes evident that TV had about 80 percent of all registrations in each giving year eleven point eight twelve point seven and thirteen million respectively furthermore the addition of columns reveals an increase of about 1 million plus vehicles registered in Australia every two years from 2010 at 15 million 2012 at 16 and 2014 at 17 million some further analysis reveals analyses reveal gay plural let's fix that analyses reveal that indeed there was an increase in the use of M by 30 percent from 2010 to 2014 which was the greatest change among these vehicles as where the least change was with HT at just 8% as well CV commercial vehicles were the second most registered in each of the given years making up about 15% of the total number in each year leaving the remaining 5% split among other three vehicle types to sum up although all five vehicle types increased in numbers of registrations in the giving years the percent change varied significantly by vehicle type okay so that would be your ban nine it's roughly 210 words I would estimate at this point and that's how you end up with your banned 9si okay alright BEC John thank you for making that request thank you so much everyone for your contributions I will put this up on our YouTube community board so you will be able to see it there for everybody watching thanks for hanging out in this lesson coming up in 30 minutes we'll finish up the task two that we started yesterday you're very welcome genial welcome Natalie I'm sorry if I didn't get to read everybody's sentences but keep going keep practicing okay you don't need me to read every sentence it's great practice even if I don't okay you're very welcome puja doctor Krishna it was fantastic to have a couple new members join us in this class as well bye for now and make sure to stay-tuned come back in 30 minutes
