I challenged the Mario Speedrun Master...and won. Here's how.

this is cj he has the world record in the most difficult super mario odyssey speedrun minimum captures he's done things in super mario odyssey that no one else was even willing to try in short he's insane at the game but you know who's also insane me and my 3000 hours i wanted to find out who was better at the game so i challenged cj to a true test of skill a lockout race for all the marbles we get given 25 randomly generated objectives and the first person to complete any 13 of them wins but if one person completes an objective the other person is locked out and can't get that one anymore and with that explained let me show you the greatest speedrun race i have ever participated in three two one go good luck good luck we start our games to reveal the board and i instantly start looking for some easy objectives i knew that almost any goal in cascade cj would beat me to so i came up with the strategy uh captain toad cascade we're absolutely gonna do we're gonna speedrun captain toad cascade and then focus on regional coins after that oh but see is cj gonna go for captain toad and cascade cause i know he's faster than me i may let cj get 35 regional coins in cascade just to get ahead um so here's the route so far reading captain tony cascade i'm leaving immediately after i had my early game route but i wasn't the only one strategizing uh 35 regionals cascade boom we gotta get that immediately and i'm gonna do all regionals that's gotta be like first priority i know that he's gonna go for all regional coins and it would be really good if i could get it right before him but also i'm wondering if it's better to just not do it and just go to sand like just let him do that and i just move on but there's not much for sand i think i gotta try lucky for me though cj did exactly what i expected him to do and started collecting regional coins this boss fight needs to go very well okay i'm focused though i am focused and ready not knowing where cj was i knew i had to rush through the boss fight to talk to toad as soon as possible oh no no do i even get captain toad now is the question i figured it was gonna be close but i went to captain toad anyway if he's gonna hit captain toad it's in the next few seconds good we got him because he had taken the time to collect regional coins before the boss cj was just finishing up the fight when i scored the first point [ __ ] he's ahead but we're leaving we're letting him get regional coins in cascade that was the idea let's go good i had my sights set on three goals in sand kingdom 35 sand regionals six sub-area moons and eight checkpoints and for now everything was going according to plan cj struggled a little bit no what am i doing stop being an idiot but managed to get all the cascade purple coins and he was off to sand kingdom it was at this moment the race began to shift if he is going for all regional coins in one kingdom that'll be good for us but i don't think he is because he realized it would take too long oh he did go for it that is so good oh yes that gives us like really easy a bunch of goals i underestimated cj's speed and it was the beginning of my downfall um 35 regional coins and sand that is also uh six moons from sub-areas in sand we're gonna warp here we're gonna get some checkpoints now oh we already got six minutes in sub areas sand okay gotta go i gotta go then cj saw me complete two goals and picked up the pace in less than three minutes he visited every available checkpoint in the kingdom oh this is eight this is eight and there's a story moon good [Music] that sucks we need to leave then i did not realize he was going for that that's really bad so we can just leave now purchase three costume sets wait a minute we can do that right now let's get that out of the way bye oh no i can't do that yet damn this is a tough one in my disbelief i made a snap decision to leave the kingdom immediately another mistake oh no i missed a chest how many did i get in sand to get the five treasure chest school before cj i needed to get at least two chests while in sand i only got one i haven't done this clip in a while i might mess it up we'll see so i shifted my focus to the painting moon goals i did lake clip to get one painting moon early thank god okay then went into the wrangle fight when cj made an important realization i just realized something we said that this race is for all the marvels but we didn't say what the marbles were 10 subs marbles 10. okay anyways i jumped through the painting from lake kingdom we're done this school [Music] oh [ __ ] you got two board painting boots if he didn't beat harriet then i will get three and then if he didn't beat harry then later i can get world peace pretty quickly immediately after i noticed a lack of two fishing moon goal which was conveniently right beside the painting please look youtube behave this time why is that fish on the side this is the worst fish i've ever seen finally my god okay i didn't realize it at the time but getting this objective was my single largest mistake of the race i'm gonna go wooded i know he's in lake yep he's in late kingdom so this is good cj now knew i was in late kingdom so he went straight to wooded to lock me out of the objectives there before i continued onto wooded myself there was one more objective to complete okay we're gonna get another costume now oh purchase three full costume sets this one well i just need one costume where's three custom sets no you've got to be kidding me dude i was looking for three costume sets on the board i already had it i couldn't find the square oh my god i'm so pissed in wooded cj had a massive head start actually we can get a chest moon two chest moons and wooded oh brain waves dude then cj completed it before me oh he got five treasure chest moons i put on this costume for nothing i went for ground pound moons cj got that one too what how did he get that already dude that means he's moon's ahead of me in wooded kingdom his lead got larger and larger no no no no this is deep woods this is deep woods come on i have no clue what sman's doing because he hasn't really checked anything off lately i just finished a couple things just getting getting through how that means he's like three minutes ahead how did he get it that fast i don't know hell i'm doing anymore man with my chances of victory dwindling i completed one measly goal the third painting moon and considered my options there was no way i could ever catch up to cj he'd always be a kingdom ahead of me with one last ditch effort i analyzed the board and then it hit me the only way to win was to lose so i let cj know he was winning i'm gonna be honest i was at 20 moons 20 woody moons yeah oh that really hurts rough you hurt me there let's go i had wasted precious minutes getting 20 moons only to be locked out just two moons short almost all of my efforts in wooded kingdom were completely wasted but i revealed the start of my plan to chat i'm looking at the board there is no reason to go past wooded kingdom no reason instead of going forwards through the game i went back to lake kingdom on the previous visit i had collected eight moons and if you look at the board there's both an 18 and 20 moon goal for lake i just needed a few more moons to get two quick goals and since cj hadn't done lake yet i had a head start but yeah this was one of them that would have been good to get for a chest moon it's too late now so what are you up to right now i'm just getting ahead it's nothing too much to say but you've fallen right into my trap okay interesting i'm excited to see what that means exactly no i assumed you went to lost i was doing that i stole the two objectives right from under cj's feet i managed to tie the score eight to eight my plan wasn't over yet though this was just the beginning but it all relied on cj doing one thing going straight from lake all the way to lost kingdom there was no way to know if he was doing it or not so i just had to hope as i went further back into the game to cap kingdom okay think he went to cap i don't know what is he doing oh he bought the lost oh my god i think we win then cj had completed the lost kingdom captain toad goal i feel like lost is the obvious way to go and that was all the confirmation i needed to put my plan fully into motion by going to cab i was able to complete the cap kingdom sub-area goal i didn't stop there i started collecting regional coins from cap kingdom and left with 25 i went back to lake kingdom with cj entering the mecca wiggler boss fight in lake i captured the puzzle piece normally with captures getting 22 unique captures without going past wooded kingdom it's unheard of you would need to capture basically every unique thing in the game up to that point even ones far out of the way lucky for me though i had this planned out from the start in sand i had captured a moai while in the sub area in lake kingdom i captured lakitu in deep woods i captured the tree the coin coffer and the rock in regular wooded i captured the poison piranha plant and in cap i made sure to capture a paragoomba with all these rare captures alongside the ones you normally encounter i was able to complete the 22 capture goal getting my points lead back 9 to eight that's not good that's really not good this was just a small lead so my victory still wasn't guaranteed if cj ever picked up on what i was doing he could easily thwart my plan by backtracking himself so i had to keep losing what was your last capture there uh it was a secret trying to gauge where you are to figure out my route for this it was just a wiggler okay i collected 27 regionals from lake kingdom and returned to cascade kingdom for more as everything began to fall into place man i hope it doesn't come down to 225 regionals oh yeah that one's gonna suck i think like the only ones i've gotten are in cascade yeah i mean i i've been just completely i was like if we have to go down to that whatever i was actually amazed you got all the regionals in cascade because i was like that doesn't contribute towards anything else but i guess it was kind of two goals oh but i guess you're ahead of me if it goes down to that because you've got like all 50. yeah that's true actually uh he feels so safe 40 okay um so we're at 25 plus 27 plus 40. [Music] okay we're gonna get as many seven story moons that means he's in metro kingdom he's done a bunch of musicians uh i need to start on sand world peace here soon or i should start it now cause i'm so far ahead yeah i should just start sandpiece now i have no idea how i'm gonna catch up to you dude like yeah i mean you well you you're just finished like metro right i was a seaside ants now yes that's true yeah where are you at i'm trying to catch up in metro like i was trying to get the musicians before you but i just couldn't do it like i i am so far behind it's close i'm ner i really don't want it to come down i know i purpose but i feel like it will ah it's gonna be close this whole time he has no idea what i'm doing it's fantastic i love it i feel like a super villain playing these mind games he needs to finish at least seaside and then snow and then get regional coins which i have kind of been focusing on for the last 10-15 minutes it's a nerve-wracking dude it's real nerve-wracking yeah it's impossible to know until he checks something off i can't know where he is come on are you going for sandpiece have you been going for it no i'm not i'm trying to catch up i was trying to do a uh smoking the moon actually oh yeah i tried i tried to go to snow first but you were that far ahead no i went to school first and i still didn't catch up but i mean you i already beat harriet so all i have to do is go beat nucleotide what you i like i beat i beat harriet at the beginning yeah oh my god i have to get both goals to win this i was scared i was telling my chat i feel like he might be going for sand piece while also picking up a bunch of purples along the way so he has the purple i was just like freaking out i still don't know you might be messing with me i can't tell i've i've been like behind you the whole time like i was so sure i could get to that barrier moon but how far are you into uh sand kingdom like can i catch up i'm almost i'm about to enter the fight in like 10 seconds where are you i'm i'm trying to get back i'm trying to get area man damn i was nervous yeah i mean there's a good chance that you uh are losing and i've been lying the whole time oh my gosh what i've been lying the whole time i was like there's no way he was that slow on the goomba moon how many perks do you have almost all of them i think you lose are you joking no i'm not i've been i've literally just stopped got regionals from every kingdom i never left wooded what wait what i never i've been lying this whole time to keep the use i knew this was my only chance to win once i started making mistakes had you already beaten the boss for a while and you were just waiting oh it's been done for a while yeah god damn it i thought i had it in the bag it felt so good are you kidding me i've been bamboozled so hard god and three costume sets would have won me the game but i couldn't find the square you gotta be kidding me i know stuffed me up like a chicken oh you sounded so genuine why are you such a good liar and that's time i think i mean it came down to a difference of i i think now i'm at about 190 so it came down to a difference of 35 regionals yeah that is the most ridiculous thing i'm never going to trust you ever like ever i just thought we were being honest with each other gg that was a good race it was a good race all right well you know i'm gonna get it next time i feel it i feel it thanks for the subs i appreciate it no problem thanks for thanks for ruining all trust i will ever have in you i would never trust another word you say if you enjoyed the video remember to subscribe i really do appreciate it also be sure to check out cj he's a good friend of mine and he's got some really good youtube content but that's all for now thanks for watching and i'll see you next time
