7 Misleading Trailers That Were Nothing Like the Final Game

a good video game trailer should do two things one give you an idea of what the game will be like and two feature Keanu Reeves in some capacity wake the [ __ ] up Samurai we have a city to burn sadly very few game trailers do that second thing and amazingly some don't even do the first presenting Visions for upcoming games that absolutely don't match the finished products whether it's in terms of Story characters gameplay or even the entire concept here are seven of the most misleading video game trailers that had very little to do with the game they were trailing enjoy amberware spoilers ahead for the following games [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] and protects us from what lies Beyond but out there you either live with the choices you make or die trying to change them the dictionary defines Anthem as a rousing or uplifting song identified with a particular group or cause like the national anthem that's not the national anthem it's my national anthem so imagine the outrage when in 2019 an online action RPG named Anthem included not a single rousing or uplifting song also maybe just as significantly the game on launch felt buggy unrefined thin on content and approximately a million miles away from the promise of the seven minute gameplay reveal trailer from two years prior in the world of Anthem you and your friends are Freelancers the heroes who leave the safety of the walls of Fort Tarsus to explore the unknown and protect Humanity that Gameplay trailer which premiered at Microsoft's 2017 E3 press conference depicted a seamless richly detailed Dynamic alien world from the makers of Mass Effect where so-called Freelancers dawned customizable flying EXO suits and stepped out to seek adventure and loot with their online friends what could be better wrath oh nice the trouble with this Anthem Gameplay trailer was that it contained no actual Anthem gameplay why because this trailer was made before the game existed it later transpired that back when this trailer came out Anthem was still in pre-production and this trailer was in effect a proof of concept thought the game could look like every player will own an array of exosuits we call javelins these suits give players superhuman capabilities and are heavily customizable so they look and play how you want having spent years laboring in development held with progress impeded by indecision and mismanagement the makers of Anthem had nothing to show at E3 2017. the solution was to fudge a slick looking demo for the public with the aspiration that the final game when it came out would be as much like this as possible hang in there almost there now in fact the developers at BioWare had to radically scale back those Ambitions and two extremely crunchy years later they launched a game that only passingly resembled the original trailer this less impressive world was far from the seamless open multiplayer experience presented in 2017 and claiming your all-important loot in it was a pale imitation of the demos 2017 promise [Music] big item well is it a jarrah's wrath or isn't it we just don't know so last minute was the presentation for anthemat E3 2017 that just days before the show the game had a different name altogether that name being Beyond until they discovered it would be too difficult to secure the rights to that name which explains if not excuses the lack of rousing songs in the final game not every game can manage it days [Applause] [Music] anyone who's seen a zombie movie or played a zombie video game knows how these things usually go hordes of Undead swarm the heroes who spend the entire thing gutting them down running them over or smashing their heads in with improvised Weaponry then it turns out the whole thing was a metaphor for consumerism or something that guy was consumerism or society and I'm consumerism metaphor however in 2011 when the first trailer for teclan's upcoming Zombie Survival game Dead Island Hit YouTube it looked like a new day was Dawning in Zombie media foreign were the exploding heads and buses covered in chainsaws of the past here the trailer told us was a zombie game with depth and emotion to it in it we see a young girl and her parents arrive at the doomed Resort in which the game takes place only to be set upon by zombies the girl is bitten turns into a zombie attacks her father and is then thrown out of the window to her death but in a stroke of pathos-inducing Genius the entire thing takes place in slow motion in reverse and is set to a heartbreaking piano song guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened Zombie Slayer foreign [Music] then the actual game came out and consisted of this yes Dead Island was in fact a zombie game based around smashing endless zombie heads in with improvised weaponry and none of the pathos promised by the incredible trailer all right behind the scenes it seems that techland outsourced the trailer to glasgow-based Animation Studio axis animation who took the brief and decided instead to make a masterful short film which did win a gold award at the canned Lions International Festival of creativity but didn't actually tell you anything about Dead Island or show you what the gameplay would be like leaving players disappointed I mean apart from the players who did just want to Cave zombie heads in with a pipe they did okay oh [Music] if you've played the tekking games you'll be familiar with heihachi Mishima the brutal industrialist and martial artist who looks like his hair is on upside down hey Archie's story and that if his family his son kazuya and Grandson Jin is Central to the Tekken series and so when Tekken 5 debuted a trailer announcing that hey Hachi Mishima is dead it was huge news is dead I know according to this trailer hey Hachi was cornered and killed by a group of exploding Jack robots and with him gone the hierarchy of the Tekken Universe was going to shift considerably with countless other contenders rushing in to fill the power vacuum left by the now defunct patriarch think succession but with slightly more punching and so when the game finally released doubtless many Tekken fans raced to the story mode to scope out the roster and find out just what was going on where they were greeted by oh who's this oh look it's heihachi Mishima and he's very much alive yeah so apparently he did get blown up by robots but he got better the fight would have killed an ordinary human but hey Hachi No Ordinary man held off the Jacks and survived the Ambush yep not even slightly dead so that trailer was just lying I guess the flowers are here I reckon we go over to Namco bando's office and lay them in the street outside you know yeah I'm gonna have to go and deal with this uh can someone else say the next one let's pronounce spread out he's got to be close I had a man like Rambo long enough sooner or later you'll find yourself the one being hunted the original Rambo movie First Blood is mostly about the crippling effects of PTSD in its Rambo kills one person accidentally and then ends up turning himself into the police so it's sort of wild that in the sequel First Blood Part 2 he kills 75 people some of them with a rocket launcher it's this second movie that Rambo the video game was based on and if you're going by that game's first trailer you'd most definitely be expecting an exciting semi-open world first person shooter in which you need to utilize careful stealth Close Quarter takedowns and when all else fails gun blazing combat to keep John Rambo alive indeed checking the YouTube comments of this trailer show that there were plenty of people excited to take Rambo on this new interactive Adventure so it must have come as a bit of a shock when the actual game came out to discover that it was an on-rail shooter with as much interactivity as a PowerPoint presentation foreign PowerPoint presentation at a conference about knife murder but a PowerPoint presentation nonetheless turns out folks would have much preferred an open world free-form Rambo game over an on-rail shooter and as such the game reviewed terribly and sold poorly so now anyone who wants to play Rambo in a video game is sort of stuck with Mortal Kombat 11. [Music] not quite the same is it all right Lads I'll give you Blackbeard's honest opinion you ask me can this new captain promise you a life of prizes plunder an adventure I to this day Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag Remains the best pirate game that occasionally makes you stop being a pirate and work an office job for a Canadian tech company of all time damn this thing of all time annoying office-based distractions aside Black Flag remains many fans favorite game in the series thanks to all the rad pirate stuff it lets you do and it's cool likable protagonist Edward Kenway not a bad looking Tinder Box you got there you sound a bit green horny gold is it Envy because mine's bigger than yours but if you were just going off the first trailer for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag you may have been somewhat disappointed because there's a ton of stuff in there that never made it to the version that everyone played if you've not seen the trailer it takes the form of Blackbeard a real life pirate and character in the game making a recruitment pitch for Sailors to join Edward's crew for amongst all the gentlemen of Fortune sailing these West Indies he ranks amongst the most clever well you can add lying to Blackbeard's laundry list of crimes because it turns out that old Eddie teach here is telling tall tales about what Edward is actually capable of at least based on how things are in the finished version of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag for a start this whole recruitment thing is a total fabrication there are only a few ways of getting new Sailors for your crew and black flag and they're mostly either rescuing Sailors or recruiting them from captured ships or from sea shanty singing competitions I mean I assume one of the core skills they'll need on my crew [Music] Turbo in the trailer we also see Edward's flag which prominently features the Assassin logo something that doesn't happen until the very last mission of the game and even then Edward is only helping the Assassins as a favor who's this Taurus and what's your mind onto in a death sentence he's a Templar a Rogers and horny gold we then get in quick succession Edward firing two guns at once Edward using a club to batter someone and Edward swinging across onto the deck of another ship kicking someone in the process all of which aren't things that you can do in the game the trailer wraps up by implying that Edward is a womanizer with a huge amount of mystery to his backstory which again not true don't meddle his Private Affairs for there's more mystery of that man and even I dare ask if you say so Blackbeard but in the actual game he has a wife back home that he's devoted to and he's out privateering and later pirating to make money to build a better life for them something he repeatedly states without any mystery whatsoever don't give up on me Caroline no one I need your faith the most also the trailer doesn't mention that you'll spend roughly 30 of your time mooching around an office and trying to get Danny Wallace to make you a latte but I mean that's understandable they wanted some people to actually buy it oh look who's here so he didn't forget after all you're just incredibly rude and they'd pull Rebecca here wait for nearly 30 minutes listen that's Destiny calling it's daring you to seize it Game of Thrones has a lot to answer for and I'm not just talking about a bunch of kids named Khaleesi or the entirety of Final Fantasy 16. no I'm talking about the phase that mobile game ads went through in the early 2010s where you couldn't visit a website without getting a banner out of a glossy-eyed scantily clad Shield maiden or elf staring at you and saying play now my Lord I'm looking at you ebony of course these games always turned out to have almost nothing to do with their promotional materials being mainly Resource Management Sims for mobile telephones but nowhere was the gulf between the trailer and the actual gameplay more pronounced than in game of War fire Age an MMO strategy game that came out on Android and iOS in 2013. take for example this commercial in which the model Kate Upton addresses a huge Army on the eve of their Lord of the Rings style epic battle against a giant Minotaur to your alliance line and there's nothing then what's about to come out of those trees or this one in which Kate Upton has a bath and then her city is besieged by super cool fantasy monsters the thing about Empires the bigger you build them the more your enemies want to knock them down or this one in which holy sh Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey in this game well no she isn't in fact nothing like this is as you may have suspected if you'd stayed until the end and watched the 0.4 seconds of actual gameplay they crammed in at the end presumably to fulfill some kind of truth in advertising standard game of war play for free now from the App Store whoops blinked and I missed it this of course is because game of War fire Age actually looks like this gameplay mostly consists of gathering resources building units and either coughing up real money or sitting and watching timers until you're allowed to play again [Music] still at least it's out unlike a certain book I could name George RR Martin seriously what is he doing over there Spartan lock I have spent enough years with Oni to know the truth [Music] once this is over after all we have done they will order you to kill us well if there's one thing that the trailers for Halo 5 Guardians promised is that Master Chief would have a poncho if there were two things that the trailers for Halo 5 Guardians promised it's the Poncho and that the unusually Moody central conflict of the game would be between new characters Spartan lock and here to four good guy Spartan Master Chief who had gone Rogue for some reason probably Cortana 117 stand down this is your one chance to come home peacefully the driving force of the campaign it seemed would be that Master Chief had turned half-ton anti-hero who needed to be brought down by Locke and his team I'm a spider now sir I know you get now you had another spot and boy do these two guys in power armor hate each other with a passion Master Chief must have done something really Dreadful hey like apparently betraying Humanity itself but no this would be a tale of heel turns and gray morality the trailers and developers seem to say one character has been always looked at as the hero except actually not some much when the game came out in 2015 Master Chief treachery had been softened to him just going AWOL for a bit and Lock's team was on a pretty reasonable mission to track him down nobody lets the chief do anything he does what he wants until 0-6 31 this morning when he was declared absent without leave this isn't about the massive John is not equipped emotionally to deal with her as a threat hey after all the animosity and drama of the trailers look and master chief fought each other one time in the entire game in a hand-to-hand Spartan brawl while everyone else watched also the whole fight is in a non-interactive cutscene so if you had been anxious about the gray morality of having to actively punch your hero Master Chief right in the faceplate you needn't have worried at any rate Locke loses then Chief gives him the slip again so this one fight doesn't pivot the plot in any particular direction and the very next time lock catches up with MC they join forces so none of the juicy drama promised by the trailer Chief please wait Ana She's Dangerous I know and worst of all no poncho someone should go to jail is what I'm saying hey thanks for watching this video about misleading video game trailers if you want to watch something else then can I recommend either of these two videos which definitely
