[Music] [Music] but we are in for a beautiful day in the mountains of Vermont supposed to be over 70 degrees today which is unseasonally warm for this time of year and even though there is still snow in some places the leaves starting to pop has a beautiful time of year to be in the woods so I had permission to a piece of property two years ago on this piece of property way up on the side of a mountain there were two sellers one of them mikage two didn't find much of anything the second seller I actually did find a few cool things and I did make a video for that place and I'll put the link to that one in the description of this video and so I got a phone call from the landowner and he said hey Brad we were hunting this last fall and we're pretty sure we found another seller on our land I said I'll be right there so that's where we are today good news were up in here already quite a ways bad news is the road that comes up in here is accessible because it's springtime it's mud season here in Vermont so I've had a longer walk than usual to get up in here but we're getting pretty close we're bushwhacking here we're gonna link up with an old ATV trail hopefully we'll be there soon [Music] so I'm walking along to the site and there's this big puddle let's check this out see that through the glare from what I understand those are toads and these are spotted salamanders and if you don't know what a spotted salamander is they're unbelievably big they're like this huge black in yellow spotted lizard that's a salamander this I think would probably be considered what's called a vernal pool which is just you know like a seasonal pool where animals lay their eggs and stuff and I'm pretty sure that these are like protected by law like you can't mess with them they appear where they appear and you're not supposed to touch them I don't think I'd want to touch those eggs anyways [Music] all right well I do believe we have arrived you know III went to where I thought that it would make sense to put a home there's like a little babbling brook over there but walk around for a while couldn't find it finally decided to trust the landowners GPS point and he was right I should have did that to begin with but it is just a very unassuming little dish in the ground no stacked stone so I don't know it resembles one of these very poor mountain homes that were used to metal detecting but we're gonna get our gear out and see we can find all right well we have our first artifact here it appears to be a colonial cope button that beautifully engraved by hand around the perimeter here shanks still there that's a good sign they're losing their buttons back in the colonial days all right let's see if we can find some more all right it's not much we have a little piece of brass here it's just a fragment one piece of a colonial-era shoe buckle looks like I had a pretty nice little design on here around the edge here that's cool well that for me confirms we're in the colonial era here mid late 1700s people were wearing these on their shoes so that's got me optimistic here let's keep going see what else we can find all right well I have a little bit of a surprise in the hole I haven't been getting a whole lot of mid-tones or high tones or any any tones other than iron and so I decided I would dig some big iron and see what we've got here maybe pull out a cannonball or something and this is not a cannonball it is a little silver coin it was I thought for sure this was gonna be a piece of iron that's so crazy those of you who are familiar with metal detecting in your metal detector that is not a very good tone but uh appears to be a little silver coin and that makes me second-guess everything I know about my metal detector all right let's see what this is this appears to be Spanish nice I think yeah oh man and I hit it I hit it I didn't think that was gonna be a silver coin at all I hit it with my shovel all right let's get it cleaned off the date might be all right it's not quite as bad as I thought it was King Charles the third of Spain date being 1780 something I'll figure it out at home throw the number up on the screen get that little silver Spanish coin deep deep in the mountains of Vermont under probably a blanket of nails which is why it sounded like that man that was such a shocker when that popped out this is a half rial this is dime sized and would have been quite valuable back then they must have missed it when they lost it all right let's see if maybe we can find a few more things here so being spring this is probably the best time to do like foraging for wild edibles right now there are just a ton of fiddleheads everywhere so you can see here we have a fiddlehead I'm going to break this off and right over here we have a fit I'll break this off and you'll notice they're very different one of them is completely round and this one well if you can make that out it has a rib down the inside one of those is very edible and delicious and the other one is not and a lot of people make the mistake unfortunately the ones with the rib on the inside are the good ones I'm actually hoping sometime soon to make whole video on a bunch of edibles maybe we can catch some trout again throwing some fiddleheads and ramps and where else we'll see but short window so I don't know right now I'm more interested in finding treasure [Music] [Applause] all right well after that half rial I am making it a point to dig everything good choice this target was not very good I would have never normally dug this but check this out somebody know what that is that is a folding knife but this is uh this is for sure colonial you know everything else we're finding here is from the mid to late 1700s as is this I'm not sure I've ever found a folding knife so old I don't know if it ever occurred to me they had folding knives way back then this is uh going to be cleaned up and displayed for sure two hundred fifty year old folding knife really cool let's keep going all right well I got a pretty nice little mid-tone down here and I just kind of kicked it out of the hole I know what it is check this out oh god is it complete oh it's not that's okay it's almost complete I got this yeah look at that unbelievable yeah and it still moves amazing so this is a this is a shoe buckle this is what that fragment would have looked like if it was all together obviously we're missing a piece over here I absolutely love finding these things this one you know I always ponder how these things get lost because there would have been a thick leather strap through here it seems unlikely it would have fallen off and the person would have not noticed because this is what tension is your shoe keeps it on your foot so I suspect this one broke and they tossed it and here we are finding it marveling over somebody else's garbage from a couple hundred years ago that's okay I think it's amazing all right beautiful let's keep going all right I don't know what I have here you see that that it's a piece of iron I want to say it's a sword but I don't think it's a sword I don't know let's pull it out not a sword that would have been amazing though you know what I think that is is a fire poker so I think that is you know puggle your logs a little bit this up here is super pretty this was absolutely hand forged somebody with a hammer and an anvil ting ting ting made it to that shape few hundred years ago I grew up in a house that burnt wood for heat and we had something very similar to this which was shorter which you used to open up the wood stove but I have to assume they had a fireplace you know and use this to move logs around that's gonna be my guess cut I thought that was a sword all right let's uh let's keep going see if we can find some more stuff you know a place like this is by far my favorite place - metal detector we are very very high up in the mountains absolutely surrounded by nature on all sides for miles as we're metal detecting here I'm not finding any modern items no shotgun shells no shell casings no pull tabs beer cans nothing like that this place is pristine when it comes to kind of cross-contamination of different time periods every time you find a target you know it's going to be old it might not be something significant but at least it'll be 250 plus years old so all right we're gonna keep going it takes me like two hours to get here and save myself that time to get home again at a reasonable time so we don't have a ton of time left they keep going this long thank you [Music] all right we are still digging iron here after that we go and check it out it's a little well I think it's a hammer yeah I mean it's definitely a hammer look how tiny that is I don't know maybe that shine some light on the occupation of the people that lived here although I suppose pretty much everybody had a hammer you know it'd be a pretty useful tool back then really cool all right colonial hammer let's get going all right I have found three real big coat buttons in this general area now I just got another pretty nice target here probably gonna be another one we'll see [Music] check it out no hey it's not a coat well it might be a copepod but it's not a big flat coat button this is one of these interesting dome shaped ones Mike found one of these in the video where I found my gold coin yeah it's like a little mountain mushroom lots of commenters had mentioned that they thought that it was military I wasn't able to confirm that but that's what we'll go with that's pretty cool alright let's keep going alright check it out we're still get still digging our iron targets dad did it uh colonial scissors incredible you know this is the stuff that I never find because I typically never dig iron targets geez I guess I'm gonna have to start I am NOT gonna try to move these these are seized in place for eternity and unfortunately but uh that's cool pair of scissors little ones go along with her little hammer I guess all right beautiful little scissors I will display nice getting cleaned up a little bit awesome let's keep going well I just found a button again it was an iron tone first I thought it was Tom Bakk I'm wondering now if this is actually silver because that cleaned up incredibly let me get out of the Sun here look at that man I'm pretty sure this is silver yeah this is cleaning up way too good to be Tom back let me get a sprayer here incredible little button a little silver button this is my first ever that's wondering if there'd be some hallmarks in there but I guess not that cool all right that's a good find silver button see if maybe we can find some more stuff here that little silver button came out of right here and I have a kind of a similar target here in here I'll kind of jumping that sounds good I've been digging see nope unbelievably this time it's a thimble well that was not something I was expecting [Music] okay we got a thimble I'm not gonna take the dirt out cuz uh I don't want to get crushed in my container but that's cool a thimble and a silver button interesting all right well we have had quite the day slow start and then I decided to start digging some iron and I found immediately a silver coin which is still making me like almost discouraged like maybe I should go back to all the places I've ever metal detected and and dig more iron targets because like who knows what I must have left behind anyway I guess you can't really think that way after the silver half rial I decided to start digging all the junky targets I possibly could and we came out with some pretty cool relics some stuff that I've never found before because I don't usually dig this stuff let's take a look at it all we've got unbelievably three shoe buckles but they're just fragments of course this one I actually found the other piece this is two parts of a frame and then also two other pieces of fragments that I were in the same hole so they go together well we're here for the buttons we have these three enormous coat buttons in the back I would didn't show this button look at that isn't that cool I thought at first it was like a like a compass but I don't think it is I think it's just a design our little pyramid button similar to the one Mike found big ol fat pewter button just another flat button thimble musket ball with the sprue still on there and then the two pieces of silver today only one coin but two pieces of silver we have the Spanish half real and that beautiful silver button solid silver incredible we have our fireplace poker which I thought for sure was gonna be a sword a little unrealistic I am now thinking in retrospect but you know when you see some poke out of the hole like that you just never know we have our little hammer this was a piece of utensil which I found I didn't show it's just a there was scales and who knows who's out here maybe a fork or a spoon our scissors and our really interesting folding blade knife so thanks again for watching I'm really excited now for the next place that I go to dig a lot more iron targets and I never know we could find some more silver coins silver buttons incredible alright thanks again for watching see you next time [Music]
