[Music] [Music] hey folks my name is Brad Martin and today we are braving the black flies hiking up the side of this mountain in the middle of nowhere Vermont on the search for a whole don't know much more about it than that the landowner who invited us today said that there is a hole with some stone walls it's not on any old maps no information on this place it could be a sinkhole or it could be the home site to a very wealthy doctor that dropped all of their coins we're not gonna find out until we get there and we've got a ways to go [Music] well I think we're here it is not very open but there is a what appears to be a cellar here I don't see any stacked stone I'm gonna have to get my metal detector out to see if there is even any iron here nails and stuff because this could just be not a home site we mean we're not going to know until we get the metal detector out looking around it is very very overgrown in here it is gonna be tough walking around the hole let's get the metal detector out see if we can find something well I got the machine out we've got good news listen to this that is iron those are nails sheet metal all evidence that there was a home here or at least a structure we're gonna keep going until we find something that is not that sound hopefully a piece of brass or silver or gold let's find out all right well nothing too exciting here but man bugs are eating me alive I got our first little artifact here which is a great sign this is just a fragment you can see there's a little hole right here a giant giant Jingle Bell I don't think I've ever found one this big that would have been a baseball-sized jingle bell or chrono Bell they're called and that's just a piece of one obviously it was a ball three or four holes around the top somewhere to hang it from up here and this were attached to wagons and horse harnesses the wagon or the cart roads coming up through the mountains were only wide enough for one car so if you had two carts coming from either direction you wanted to make sure that you could hear the other one come in so that you could pull off as far as I understand they don't go backwards very well so hopefully that's a good sign that you know they were coming up here on a regular basis on their wagons and lived here a long time we'll see I wasn't expecting this when I dug it still learning the the dais and a lot of times you know flat pieces of iron will sound like really good targets and I've been digging a lot of that just to learn the Machine and that's what this sounded like I thought for sure it was going to be iron I was hoping I didn't break this I don't think I did I'm looking at all of the brakes here and it would appear they're all old brakes but it is mostly intact like that popped right back in look at that absolutely beautiful shoe buckle colonial mid 1700s very very exciting I haven't actually made it to this side of the cellar yeah spent most of the time on the other side which I thought was the front but you never know man that is incredible maybe the other ones around here there was a bunch of those really loud targets right here and again I thought it was like a broken up piece of iron pot or something still learning the Machine goes to show you gotta investigate those targets that you're a little bit unsure about it might be a giant colonial shoe buckle this was probably on a big old boot incredible well we're gonna check these other targets maybe we'll be right back maybe there'll be nothing but uh this thing is hard to beat all right shoe buckle came out oh right here I'll let you hear my headphones maybe you can hear it again I thought that was ironed before but see very shallow assuming it's the other one I'll be very careful here axe head I'm not complaining about an axe that I thought it the other shoe buckle still cool like I said they sound they sounded almost the same I'm sure there were differences in the audio but again I'm still learning it still a grapevine we're gonna set this on a rock so I'm not carrying it around all day but we're gonna keep searching this area maybe hey you know what let's make up a little story here real quick I was using his axe cutting down a tree lost his shoe buckle maybe to see Buck's are brutal so I was detecting around and you see the sellers right there behind me if you're squeamish you can turn away but I found a huge pile of scat right here and it is big and it appears to have some hair in it although I think that might be grass it's hard to tell and you know judging from the size it's a bear and I get asked all the time aren't you nervous about going up into the mountains because of all the wild animals aren't you afraid of you know like wolves and stuff and Vermont doesn't have wolves anymore unfortunately although there are some pretty interesting stories about some goings-on with wolves up north recent as a hundred years ago but we do have bears black bears and very large moose and coyotes but generally they'll all leave you alone unless they have a baby with them and they think that you might be a threat so there are black bears in the area right now appears to be pretty fresh I do usually carry some protection with me in the form of a handgun but I don't have one today because I'm going to be heading off into New York later this evening for something else and I can't bring that with me there so I don't I don't have it with me today well we should be fine I'm far more worried about the bugs see what else we can find [Music] [Music] all right so I'm making my way through this area that's like pretty overgrown you can see I'm on my knees kind of crawling through here I got a pretty good target there we go so we're gonna dig this together it's pretty good it's like a high eighties target it could be a button but hopefully it's a coin right here very shallow could I get it with my hands I got it my hands we have Wow it is about it's got a really interesting kind of wire shank on there it's got a big dome very reminiscent of the UFO button Eddie found years ago and we can see there's a little bit of gold plating still on there and while we're at it we do a little button check here show you how many I found so far today they are seemingly pretty abundant let's see one two three four five six seven and now eight with the one we just found we also did find a couple spoon fragments which I did not feel was worth showing you so far so good buttons and spoon fragments put this one in see what else we can find all right well you're gonna have to excuse my excitement I'm not exactly sure what we have here you can see that it's round I'm thinking that it's I thinking that it's a knee buckle maybe but I think it's silver it might not be I don't know let me get my water out I don't know it's brass but it's definitely got a silver wash on there you can imagine they wore short pants long socks and these things went on like a strap around the knee area so there it is this is a little knee buckle like a shoe buckle it's very iconic for the time period cloth strap gone through they worn right below the knee I believe there's not much curve on it this one actually is damaged you can see that it has a curve that doesn't belong but alright comment down know that I know it's not silver yeah just just a silver wash on there but still that's a incredible find alright maybe we'll find a match for this so maybe we'll find a silver one we'll keep going alright well this isn't anything you know extremely exciting but I thought historically this is a little bit interesting earlier today this stick out my face earlier today I found two of these things right next to each other and I panicked because when the first one came out I thought it was like a giant you know silver cob coin or something but it brushed it off a bit more and it's piece of lead and I found two of them and you know what is what is the common reason somebody would be melting lead up here our mind automatically goes to musket balls which I also found today but in reality they were using it melted lead for a lot of things sealing up the flashing on the roof bail seals that's another thing that we find a lot but I just found a chunk of it look at this this is uh this is lead it's extremely heavy it red super high on the metal detector and you can see where folks were taking chunks out of it to do whatever it is they were using this for I suspect you would have bought this in little ingots this almost looks like it was probably a full size aside from this bite mark out of it I mean they like I said they had lots of purposes for this including making musket balls but you don't often find a big old ingot like that that's pretty cool I'm gonna set this down to carry it all day and now we'll come back for it at the end all right well I'm I'm not too sure what to think about this I just found another shoe buckle look at this and and it's different from the first one I found I'll have to recheck the whole to see if there's any of the you know the inner workings but this one is quite a bit more curved and it is super sturdy I'm not going to but you know I feel like if I just squeeze this thing as hard as I could it it wouldn't even budge there may or may not be and graving on there but - shoe buckles now doesn't make a lot of sense to me you know we didn't have a name associated with this home we didn't know what their occupation was we don't know when they got here when it was abandoned it's not on any old maps but judging from the elevation that we're at today you know people that lived up this high were generally scraping to get by subsistence living their own farm maybe selling you know shingles or a maple sugar so having what would be considered kind of formal dress doesn't make a ton of sense it's interesting though you know I kind of wish they were two gold coins but you know I've said over and over again shoe buckles are among my favorite things to find so certainly not complaining let's keep going maybe we'll find their pairs maybe these bugs will die down a bit see what else we can find [Music] well I honestly can't believe it I don't know what is going on here or what did go on here but we just got another shoe buckle this is you know the least pretty of all of them it's uh it's really rusted up as nodules on it there's no inner workings of it but certainly what it is another shoe buckle twisted up three different shoe buckles at the same site and think that's probably the most I've ever found in one day and all being different is kind of throwing me not really sure where they just very fashionable yeah probably not I've actually found two other axe heads today pretty interesting a lot of questions fortunately not a lot of answers right now maybe it will find something else that'll narrow it down for us but pretty interesting shoe buckles galore alright well I got a pretty faint target it was very deep for my little coil here that I'm using I was just a whisper that I heard and decided to dig it was a pretty good target and it wound up being this big piece of brass it's pretty heavy you know I don't know for sure what it is it could really be anything it could be you know the butt of like a tool and I can't help but think that it resembles the butt cap to an old handheld gun it's probably just me letting my imagination run away and dream in a little bit but that sure seems to be what it looks like there's no engraving or anything on there and we haven't found any other gun parts today but probably not it's probably like an upholstery tack right I don't know I thought it was interesting enough to show kind of cool let me know what you think it is you know if you agree with me I can't believe that we just got another one number four let me get these other ones out doesn't match that on I I don't know what to think they're all different two of them the one this is the one I just found it's also well you know it has some shine to it I'm wondering if this is like a iron with an applied like pewter or silver silver wash or something on there but it makes me wonder if maybe they were a cobbler or shoemaker or if they were collecting these things for another purpose whether that be melting them down for something or maybe they just liked collecting them I mean people collect all kinds of stuff so out of the question people would collect shoe buckles I guess bizarre but great day I've mentioned over and over in my videos these are some of my favorite things to find here we are with four in one day we're gonna spend a couple more minutes but if we don't find anything else I'm happy calling this last your buckle our last find and well let's get everything else out see what we wound up with today all right folks we're gonna call it a day the Sun has been kind of coming and going throughout the afternoon but I just heard some rumbles in the distance so we're gonna get out of here before we get wet or worse struck by lightning you know we found a lot of the very typical colonial artifacts that we find places like this buttons spoons usually we'll find a shoe buckle or two but for and one day something I've never experienced very strange but very exciting got them all laid out here let's take a look right look at all the buckles five buckles today four presumably shoe buckles and a knee buckle they're all in kind of varying states of decay here we have the two on the outside which appear to be all iron we have the very very robust brass one in the middle and then the complete I'll be a broken beautiful buckle I'm sure that there'll be some kind of engraving on there and you know clearly it displays beautifully Atlanta doesn't want it I will gladly take it home and put it in my shoe buckle collection that I that I'm starting to have here in the back one of the three axe heads I found two of them were actually in pretty good shape like that one and the third one had the back blown out which happened pretty often it's usually how we find them we have three spoon fragments here 14 buttons all different different sizes we've got this crazy UFO button all the way up to this big old brass button and we had a big old Tom back button there all all over the board all different styles no pewter though I guess we weren't quite old enough to have pewter buttons here pile a lead over here not only the to drop or whatever you call it splatters and then of course the big piece of lead the big ingot underneath really really cool place I don't know if we will ever get to the bottom of these shoe buckles why there's so many but I'm glad we were able to find them alright folks I want to thank you again for watching I hope you enjoyed this trip as much as I did and next Friday I'll be on top of a different mountain in Vermont doing it all over again and I hope you'll join me see you then
