Is Junction Traffic Fixable with a Giant Square-a-bout in Cities Skylines?

hello everybody and welcome back to fix your city with me differ thank you very much for joining me here we are in the city of last matthan sent in by math and fun and this is a doozy it's not a badly built city he's got nice highway access it's looking good I like the way this city looks but yeah the traffic is horrendous there's a few spots okay too bad this is okay plenty of Road connection it's not until you get down here that it just goes absolutely Pete Tong look this everyone's just crashing into each other yeah this highway here is a disaster zone let's have a look no highway connections on this side there's one over there maybe we can have something in there help spread out some of this traffic but yeah this is what we've got to work with it's a day and if you're enjoying these link in the description if you want to send your city in to be fixed as well so I'm just having a look around here you've got some nice thick thick main loads going through here it sort of stops here which is a shame this one goes up here this one is your highway access coming through so I mean if we follow this down here you can sort of see that this is this is too close together for start they can't get on and off this is then coming up here and it's all clogging up this as it comes further along these two junctions far too close together yeah okay so where shall we start that is the question okay I'm gonna move this here this is far too close so I'm just gonna delete that and that's it with it we're done nineteen percent so now I'm joking so we're gonna get that just to connect up here just to you know we've got Cutler nodes now in between here have to get in each other's way so much it looks like you might have got no merging so we're getting the merging on you've got the lane mathematics have you know because you've got two lanes you got two lanes joining so I'm gonna do this I know I'll get a lot of comments wanna do this cuz I'm starting at the end and then working my way in we're looking at death wave and people say follow it down to where it goes and then fix that and work your way back but to be honest these sort of things need fixing as well and I find this helps just to keep things going so I've done a bit of Hugo there to get a lane each two lanes coming in and then we've got one lane going off and we can downgrade this to one lane she's got four lanes and so we've got one two three four one goes off and it's still four okay let's bit of lane mathematics one off down to three and then when the one comes back on again fish and bash and Bosh there we go they can all go it in yeah this here is far too close to this here just thinking what we could do instead we've got this connection over here you're not I'm gonna do I'm gonna remove this and I'm gonna remove that well have these ones for coming on off here because that's far further away but yeah we're gonna do that instead and then when they come down here they can turn left and right so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna upgrade that to two lanes so you've still got one lane for turning off hopefully yeah so that one lane there can split into two to go either way that's fine like that so that will help out and we'll do the same here so I do it all the way up oh yeah it has changed it to two lanes off let's just ctrl click that again bet it's done it here as well then we just can't see it because that cars in the way there we go so one lane coming off splits into two they can go left and right I don't I'm going straight on there so what I'm gonna do is select that and say no straight arms they can go left or right good good good this should be going down to three so four minus one down to three let's just use the anarchy mods there we go and then we're getting used beers to say control s they've all got nice lanes H excellent so that's gone back to four again then you got another one joining in here okay well we'll leave it as it is we're gonna end up with no we're not we're gonna change this why have you got four lanes coming down there because you've got four lanes here and then another way just like too many lanes everywhere four lanes four lanes four names four lanes four lanes everything cuz four lanes doesn't need to be that way can I be bothered to change at all because it's all getting a bit much and that's where you can have problems like this so I think we are gonna go all the way just doing this lane on this side all the way up to is this Lane here this Lane here right so the three lanes coming down one going on this is going to be the biggest Lane mathematics we've ever done so that can easily go down to two lanes that's fine and then one comes back on so it goes back to three lanes that is no problem at all and we'll just add that in just to help so now we're back to three lanes again then you've got one coming on but those two junctions far too close together so we're gonna delete that I can join up here look plenty of room probably a premade Junction possibly maybe I don't know so let's just connect that to there just use the move it more just a bit of space so now technically this should go up to four lanes because we've got this extra Lane joining there's a little one in there no I think that's fine so we will do four lanes there but then one of them goes straight back off again so that's okay so let's do that control s you go there yeah they all get a lane each then there's a couple of three nodes along here one cut the nose before it goes off again so that's four lanes one goes off this can go back down to three Matt's with gyfer there we go so that will automatically we just pause the game let's just get rid of some of these cars donut her son D and that one and that one every day cuz of the lane mathematics you automatically get in a turn-off Lane which is what you want continue so we're down to three but I've down to three one comes back on and you've got these two junctions far too flippin close together again right look we don't need this is all connected you don't need this road going on and another road going on over here so I'm gonna remove that so traffic can come off here I can also come off there cuz that's nice and far away they can go on there and I'm gonna do the opposite the other way it just leaves a bit of room in between the junctions and that should be fine so what we're gonna do is downgrade that to three ones going off so this is going to get answer two and then one comes back on a batter three again so you how it makes sense so actually we'll leave that side and come back to it okay and where do you can see cars are moving they've got dedicated lane for going off we can easy to set up the merging coming on oh yeah this is too many lanes isn't it alright to change that to three one plus two is three watch you but I Sesame Street just what I feel like sometimes okay so then this is all gonna be three which I think it is already one two three one goes off this can go down to two okay we'll come back to that section over there in a minute so now we're getting a dedicated turning lane there we go excellent up here because we're getting another lane going off so two minus one will bring that down to one plus another one back to two but when we get up here I'd like this all to be three so we're gonna do a bit of something a bit different we're gonna change that so it is three instead of four continuing that in a moment I'm gonna change this to two and then what I'm gonna do here in stairs I'm gonna cut that to three and I'll do a couple of stretches of that and then what I do is in the middle of those two three lane rows would you control s so when they come out it's okay to have two lanes going into three because they're spreading out what you wouldn't want is if the cars will go any other ways three lanes going in - yeah that makes sense I'm sure so they began out spread out will now get a dedicated lane for coming off here although this is I think just the way the roads are set up it's getting a bit confusing so we'll add that in so once these cars start going they'll only use that for going off which is good and then coming down here we'll do that so now they get a lane each for coming on and now this I'm gonna say no switching there as well and now this needs to be all change down to three lanes which I think some of it was anyway but we're gonna carry it along hard to see which bits have done on which bits I haven't because of all the cars there so now we're down to three there we go Elaine's gonna go off down to a lane comes back on back to three makes it so much easier dedicated lane for coming off we can do the dududududu for coming on there we go let's go back to three again three three three and you've got one coming on here which is gonna make this four then another one coming on yes what we're gonna do here is a bit of so we'll have that as four four like yeah a couple of stretches like that so you know I'm breaking the balls in a couple of places but that's fine yeah we'll do that so they've all got a lane coming out at some point along here they're gonna change back to 3 on right that's four that's four yes so even though I've said you don't want four going down to three or bigger number going down to a smaller number on a long stretch like this once this traffic's gets moving that shouldn't be an issue because what I don't want is this to go up to five and oh this is far too close again here okay so with a little bit of maneuvering we've now got a couple of nodes in between this Junction and this Junction so they can change lanes if they wish which is good and so what are we up to by the way we always do these fixes with despawning turned off so it's not like your vanilla game where you would never see this much traffic yeah this is like pretty tough so I really do want to get this up this is for late our chili I'm gonna do I'm gonna do I said I'm gonna try by downgrading this just along here two three so at this point in the middle they're gonna go from four to three and we'll keep an eye on it so that means then these three can go to four and hopefully it's not going to be so busy once the traffic sorted I don't want to just make this five lanes it's gonna be nuts oops anyway so that is all connected out then one goes off so this should go down to two there's another lane gonna come off as well yeah I tell you what we'll leave that as three them so we can still have a dedicated turning lane here let's do ctrl click their dedicated turning lane for that and then it just can be honest three which is fine then we'll downgrade that which we have done just three - one two - that can connect up the to this one which is going to go back to three yes it's better to do it the direction of the traffic okay and that's okay three spreading out like that so what have we got here and let's do three lanes down to two on this one which means when that adds back on that's back to three again and this I don't think this is gonna be too busy I'm just looking around here yeah so this can go down to two as well so three one goes off yeah and we'll see how that goes and then what I'm gonna do is I've had just done a quick save is I'm now gonna do the same on the other side and then we'll just take a look at how things are going what are we at 21% all that work for 2% fantastic [Music] so there we go that was the main part of the highway down and it is interesting because a lot of people think you just need more lanes to make your traffic work you don't you just need the correct Lane setup and to help people move smoothly that's going out the city that's fine and I'm pretty sure we did this bit here no we've yeah that's down to two lanes now I'm gonna say we just didn't do this bit here I think yeah there we go look Lane mathematics and then they you go through and it's all fine dedicated Lane there you go through there we've done that side good okay why I'm pretty sure that's most of the highway done I've not touched all this up here because there's no traffic on that it's just this central section you've got a huge trash in death care problem that is basically gonna be because of your traffic they just can't get around I mean you do need some more processing for your garbage what's your health care like see health care availability ridiculously off the charts death care veil ability yeah that's fine um so I'm not gonna bother with that for now it's basically they just can't get around where they need to go to so now that we've done that yeah these guys here I've missed a little thing have an IR ah there we go we'll do that now that I've done that I'm I want to now follow some of these little junctions that are coming off and see what's going on so let's pick we're gonna start at the airport end so you've got a ton of people what's going on that's like a one-way Road whoops so they're coming off here going round oh this is a cargo airport and a cargo trains terminal and an object now reference thing all leading into this section she's interesting and they can't go both directions I can reverse direction so if we can just get all of this moving and that would just come off look and load them all coming down here right and I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna give these guys 30% it's going up gonna give them a few more lanes along here fat I'm just gonna change it all the way back still got one lane for going off then this is all going to spread out into three I'm gonna stop lane switch in there and there so they can pick their lane when they come into this node but most of them want to go off which is interesting that she's the in-game tool see whether we're going routes and that's time of Traffic Manager that gets in the way so this road here so some wanna go straight on but they basically can't get through I think yeah most are going off and they want to go up and under here and around ok let's just take a look at this Junction what have we got going on here three lanes each coming down I tell you what this middle section here can be downgraded to this one there we go try and keep this moving a bit so you've got dedicated Lane 4 off to firaon and then this here oh my goodness me so much so much going on I'm just looking at this here this is junctions too close to each other well what we could do is just turn this into one giant roundabout just to keep people moving which i think might be good good as soon as these people come out of this Junction and go it's gonna stop the less and we're getting in their way and you're using sort of two lane road so this can be an easy little upgrade so if we grab ya 34% there we go so that's going to totally confuse everybody and then some of these are still wanted to get off and go through here and go straight through but I want them we need to go round what I'm gonna try and do is see whether the roundabouts set up tall here so this one here you hold ctrl shift click it will do a high priority I mean you've got no roundabouts and this at all San Diego look it recognizes it as a roundabout they control shift click what you're gonna get now is giveaway signs of everybody coming onto it there you go giveaway and everybody on the roundabout already gets priority to keep on going which is good so we're gonna try that you know what actually I think I am gonna upgrade this to three lanes all the way around me just do that okay so we've now got all the give way signs coming on to this area which is good trying to keep these guys moving which would be fantastic I'm downgrade in some of these roads in the middle here from the three lane each way six lane roads just to these two Lane that is plenty there we go we'll do some of that just it's gonna make everything run a bit smoother and then if we need to check out some lane mathematics and staff we will okay so these guys coming down here we're just gonna check because we can't see because of all the cars what's going on so we've got a straight on straight on a light and lights obviously there's no left-hand turn here most of them seem like they want to go straight on but ideally what I'd like to do is send them right and just keep them moving we've got three lanes four right so I'm just gonna say right light and right and just keep on going out of this Junction these here I would like them just to turn light so I'm gonna say right right and right so they just keep on going and which is fine these in here I'm wondering whether just to make this one way so they have to go so you already this is starting just to move let's just see how that goes for a couple of moments see this is having this load connecting right here is really not helping they can connect to other places and go through you know I might just do let's just delete out let's draw this in and we're gonna get that to go as close as it can without actually connecting so that now just keeps this all moving they go in and go right these come out and go in and that should just keep on going I'm also gonna give them the keep on going soon go keep going keep going not getting each other's way and then this Junction down here we should have let's just have a look at this so one lane going off here two lanes going on and an autosave quits ippity it's not going too bad it's moving now this isn't getting as bad as it was we do have the world's worst tourist look at that it's four thousand two hundred and seventy five look at all the tourists coming out of this this is just gonna be a constant barrage of traffic trying to get through there that is the worst place ever for that there we go stuck it up here by the airport it's got its own dedicated road unfortunately what's gonna happen is is thousands of these are still going to come out of this section until the game realizes what's happened so yeah it's getting so bad this guy can't decide what car to take okay things are very very slowly getting better 47% this is gonna be a long journey to get this sorted out I mean this is the crux of the whole thing just looking at like some of these junctions here I don't think you've got any give way you've got no sort of anything going on here let's just see if we can pop in a automatic traffic line I don't want to just chuck roundabouts in you know it's not in with the theme of your city is it you've said you don't use any of your American I'm but you're sure that was you the commented that ah houses are collapsing so I want to just sort of see whether something like that can just make a difference to a little Junction like this and like ones like this where you can easily have some dedicated turning lanes look at that that would help in fact I want to make this like a main road going through all the way down here so I'll tell you I'm gonna do so I'm gonna grab that and I'm gonna say let's just zoom out so we hover over that it's gonna say this is the main road from beginning to end all the roads coming onto it are going to have you signs there we go so just check the end yeah no not the other way around black shield sign coming on they could do a dedicate to turning like not enough lanes right we're gonna upgrade this now as it's a main road - this one should have done that first let's go so that one you've done it that when you've done it that when you've done it that when you've done that you've done that you've done that you've done so you've done it almost down the whole thing okay that's fine good so let's just double check that again so I'll pick that right there all the ones at the end give way signs then we just double check either end just to set that the wrong way around and then we can do dedicated turning lanes going down dedicated turning lanes sort of dedicated turning lanes yeah you'll get some dedicated turning lanes out of that and that and that that one is fine to do almost at the end and then we'll just double-check the ends here there we go so then something like this road down here they're gonna this size cleared up already this side isn't too bad it's just this crossing here which hopefully with that traffic lights will make all the difference also I don't want them doing this let's just grab blackhawk you're bourgie Lane switchin I want you to pick your lane when you come into the junction and coming down here as well doesn't look like they're doing it anyway pick your lane up here some ways you're not clogging up the junction and then you guys that's fine we'll leave that like that so that should 51% we're getting there let's just keep an eye on this that should help so these are going straight down they sort of stopping there whenever there's these little nodes just like wasted space keep going through yeah let's get some dedicated turning lanes here there we go we'll do it there so this is another super busy main road coming down here so I'm gonna do that same trick we're gonna grab a piece of road do that that's gone all the way up there to the end well I definitely want to check this end because this is that roundabout isn't it yeah look so that's sort of messed up that roundabout so we do that you give way and then that bit in there yeah yeah and it's also going all the way up to this end over here in the middle of the university where it's not too busy so we'll just do that there okay we'll just leave that running for a bit and there we go barely a few minutes later this is all now moving through which is fantastic this is going and with the time traffic lights on look at that barely anybody is waiting this is not backing up at all neither as that neither that this is going through that is actually pretty darn good so how's things going in our big square roundabouts here pretty clear look it's all moving nicely in and out there's still a bit of a problem with this Junction here is so busy you know what I think I might just rip this out and put an actual roundabout Junction underneath there and you've also got this this is this luxury hotel right by here I think we're definitely going to move that we could even just pop that in there so it can still look over the the highway but you haven't got people coming out onto it yeah we're gonna have to change this it's just not working there we go I know you said that you didn't really use roundabouts but I think in this case for such a busy junction in your city something like this is just needed it may even need an even bigger Junction we'll have to see but we'll just let this run for a bit and see how much it helps let's just take a little look at what we're up to 71% I mean up here you've got some sort of little red spot but they're just busy so that's fine on the outskirts we're doing okay this is all pretty clear few little red spots again what's going on here these guys aren't been out to get out very easily doing a bit of walking walking Lane switchin that's an easy fix we'll say that you shouldn't be turning on the corner you should know you should be going straight through like that you should be merging merging merging then you're gonna get stuck you're turning right anyway yeah that's fine you've got places you can get in and out of this you're not getting stuck particularly go in any direction okay that's fine so that's good this is super busy down here we've got one lane but they can go to direction so again just a bit of simple use your brain type stuff there look and now they've got a lane figure in each direction just to help things move a bit quicker we'll do a dedicated turning lane there's junctions are so close together but I think that'll be okay let's leave that garyun 69% this is move as it's dropping as we're looking this is super busy but it's moving I think that stays now yeah this is still backing up isn't it we're at the stage where we just sort of need to let this run a bit and see how it goes it's all down to this Junction here the one Junction that's just making everything bad we may just have to do a bit of restructuring over here just a couple of things I'm gonna change as well there's the junction we've been talking about here's a main road now that comes through there and has its own highway connection up here which I've Lane mathematics I have starting to use that so that means less of these people are going to be going down into this Junction which is good I'm also gonna make use of these roads look this road comes down here comes under here and joins here I'm gonna put a junction smack-bang on the middle here and join it up to this road here so hopefully that will give people another option as well there we go so from this big square about this road now comes down here it joins up with this Junction which also connects to that highway there so some of these people that are coming down here coming in and blocking up this place here can now come around the outside instead of coming through the middle and that is always good to give people more options let's just see what we're at 79% well I'm gonna let this run for a bit and see where the people start using my other high why junctions then I'll be back with you oh look at this 80% and less people are coming through this Junction here which means more people must be coming down here yeah we've definitely got some people using this Junction which is fantastic for the for Kibaki lane switching going on there cease desist no more there we go excellent that is looking good and we could also what is going on with this Junction here do a bit of Lane management here we're gonna downgrade this middle one to that we're gonna upgrade those ones coming off to that so they've got two lanes a link for turn in each direction oh my goodness I've suddenly got sidetracked one little Junction like this and I'm sidetracked no that's not what I want on this there we go left and right for that one also could do with the same with this one here let's upgrade that as well do it all the way down then we'll grab the lane tool and say just left-click on one on one just left and right that's good and then just make sure that this is still only got one don't one lane for coming off yeah there we go and this one over here just one lane for coming off yep hopefully that will help we could do something management in there and this doesn't need to be that many lanes let's do Lane management there and giveaway and that'll be fine good hopefully keep that movie and this is moving nicely let's just nip over the other side of the city where I put this extra road in that's being used as well fan flipping that tastic how is it looking not too shabby look at that red bits but I'm moving okay it's just super busy in the mid or what I think if we leave it for a while look that he's not backing up all the way down here but another little slip road here into this area which just siphons off a little bit of the cars which is fine part from now I think
