and then we'll have some reading for everyone and again for the 31st and the first there are no classes for the new year's celebrations and then i'm back on the second third and then we're going on from there so keep an eye out for that schedule it's at the beginning of our last few videos for live classes and it's on our youtube community posts as well okay let's get into it so you are going for your ielts speaking interview the speaking interview is done separately from the reading listening writing sections and it is a 12 to 15 minute interview with a native english speaker or a professional a teacher examiner who has uh very very high english skills not necessarily native okay so be ready for that also in places you have to wear masks some places have a shield and in some places you're doing it computer-based so the chat practice is really good for that on the websites okay all right so uh you walk into your exam you should feel comfortable you should always get to your exam early does anybody know how early you should arrive to your speaking exam so when should you actually get there when should you get to your speaking exam let's just before we get into the questions so when should you arrive to your speaking exam and you just says about 30 minutes uh shelly says half an hour to an hour before yeah i would shoot for an hour to be perfectly honest with you so 30 minutes is minimum but ideally an hour before your exam um okay just in case you have some problem with traffic or some other situations then you're not in a rush you can go to the washroom comfortably you can remember to drink some water and also you can practice before the exam so this will give you time to be comfortable and to get in some very important uh last minute practice print out a couple of uh practice you can do this from our website as well uh speaking question sheets uh print them out so don't just rely on your phone okay i would recommend taking a piece of paper uh with you okay all right uh and then speaking question sheets with you okay take these with you and ask some people who are waiting for their exam to practice with you okay um what should you do if you ask somebody hey i'm here for my out speaking exam um are you also here for your exam you should be speaking english and they say yes and then you go great um i have some speaking questions with me would you like to do a little bit of practice before the interview uh what should you do if um if that person says no no i i'm really nervous and i i don't want to practice with you right now then what should you do okay and this is i know it sounds kind of funny and it sounds like a rhetorical question but it is important okay all right so all right uh gangster it depends on what kind of test you're using if it's an official cambridge exam who's administering the exam but there's no guarantee but it's a good sign okay zane says go straight into the test room nick hill says find another one absolutely that's what you should do so if a person denies you just find someone else okay someone will be happy that your last you asked them someone will be very glad that you asked okay all right uh and note that this will also help build your confidence when you go into the exam room as you are confronting other strangers before your examiner okay so one of the biggest problems why students lose marks and they don't do as well as they do in their mock exams is because they're really nervous it's a new environment it's uh maybe um an intimidating examiner who's got a thick british accent kind of a very stern uh feel and sound and if you uh ask some strangers to practice with you before your exam that will also help build your confidence so that when you go into that exam room then you will just be that much more confident to meet another stranger and be like okay i'm good now i'm confident so make sure you do that okay all right uh so just important tips there for you to follow on exam day now let's get into a little bit of practice and then i will give you more strategy as we progress in today's class so you walk into your exam room you're feeling confident and the first question the examiner will likely ask you is may i see your identification always practice this question so you come out of the gates strong it means you have a really strong start okay so may i see your identification practice answering this in different ways be natural be really fluent kyber says yes here is my passport which i used for registration please have a look that works again practice fluency this is speaking everyone so make sure to speak in this class and repeat okay copy my pronunciation my intonation all right zayn says yes sure here it is yeah zayn that works just make sure that you show fluency as much as possible when you get into the other questions okay rose says sure this is my passport that i used for registration please have a look nick hill says certainly here's my passport that i used to register for this exam please have a look yeah different ways all of them work so my pleasure here is my passport which i used for my ielts application uh please take a look here's another way okay just repeat after me students practice questions and answers okay practice questions and answers so here we go uh repeat after me may i see your identification my pleasure here's my passport which i used for my ielts application please take a look already i'm showing fluency some nice grammar that's how we do it okay bharat says definitely sir here's my passport that i used to register for this exam yeah that works all right and then the next question will be um what is your full name again have a nice clear fluent answer for this one so what is your full name give your full name give it the same way as it is in your passport or your id they're looking to match that for their papers okay all right rashika says here's my passport that i used to register for this exam please have a look carolina says my given name is carolina and my family name is asanyo uh please just call me carolina good yarabisha says yarabisha yanur is my complete name please call me arabisha okay yarabisha make sure you mention that because they're not always sure okay so please call me by my given name yarabisha all right students that is the question that comes if you don't say what should or you don't tell them what they should call you they will ask you what should i call you okay all right so um my first name is sarah my middle name after my father is muhammad and my family name is zachrani please just call me sarah okay and you might even say something like as it is written in my passport okay uh that shows the examiner that you've really practiced and you're familiar with the exam you paid attention to get ready for the exam and that also gives a bit of comfort for the examiner going into the test so here we go repeat what is your full name now when you give a long answer like this for a simple question make sure you're fluent otherwise the examiner will get really nervous that you're dragging out your language without clear friends okay so here we go my first name is sarah my middle name after my father is muhammad and my family name is al-zahrani as it is written in my passport please just call me sarah okay sarah so the speaking has three parts i will give you instructions for each here is your identification back for part one i will ask you a couple of questions to get to know you better and some questions on a general topic where do you live okay it's a very common one it's an easy question to get you feeling comfortable and warmed up so where do you live shaylee they will not jump to the next question if you're fluent enough there's no way somebody would interrupt me with that fluency that i'm showing you it's just awkward so they would let me finish but you have to be fluent okay that's why i keep saying have to be fluent they only jump to the next question if they feel like you're going off topic you're lacking fluency or you're repeating yourself okay so os says i live in a three-bedroom flat with a living room my with my family in uh bucharus besides the four at river about 30 kilometers from the downtown dursour in east syria okay oh it's very nice and precise a little bit of grammatical correction there so pay attention to that carolina says i reside in a two-bedroom apartment in the heart of buenos aires the capital of argentina with my lovely doggy what's your doggy's name carolina give the dog a name my lovely doggie sparky okay we would finish it naturally that way uh atika says currently i live in saudi arabia but originally i'm from sudan okay atika and where do you live in saudi arabia so in mecca riyadh which city maybe tell me whether you live in a house or an apartment so be specific okay all right so i'm going to go back and give you a couple notes here that came up as we were doing this all right so one of our members shaylee says well the the examiner is really fast and interrupts me okay here we go so keep this in mind ielts is an english proficiency exam not an esl exam that's a very common mistake that people make okay that they think it's an esl exam like what you have in school when you're learning english as a second language it's not okay it's an english proficiency exam which means how good are you at english doesn't matter if you're a native speaker or if you're a non-native speaker okay keep that in mind all right so this means the examiner will be just as fluent and natural with you as when speaking to any native speaker now here's the key this means the examiner will interrupt you if a you are going off topic and not answering the question that's one of the most common times okay b if you are simply repeating what you have already said sometimes students do this they'll say they'll give an answer and then they'll keep repeating themselves and kind of going back and saying the same points and the examiner is like okay well just go to the next question right that's what you would do naturally in a conversation or a c uh if you are lacking fluency and the examiner loses coherence okay so if you're going so slow and you get stuck for ideas the examiner's gonna interrupt you because uh they've lost the meaning of what you're saying okay so those are the three reasons if you're nice and fluent and you're staying on topic they will not interrupt you okay that doesn't make sense that would be awkward in any language uh speaking that language naturally okay so keep that in mind all right it's really really important okay that's why fluency is such an important part of it okay all right going back to this question where do you live all right again nice and fluently you can answer this in detail okay and details are important so again give details okay that's how you pick up band scores for vocabulary grammatical range and accuracy so i'm living i decide to use a progressive here so i'm living in a two bedroom flat in the heart of budapest hungary with my lovely wife and daughter just a stone's throw from the danube river okay all right now um it's okay to use uh idioms in the speaking but only use them if you are a hundred percent sure that you can use them accurately okay so here i'm using a couple and these work well for this type of question okay repeat after me where do you live living in a two-bedroom flat in the heart of budapest hungary with my lovely wife and daughter just stone's throw from the danube river just the stone's throw means very close okay it basically means that you can take a stone and throw it and you'll be there okay so a stone's throw away it means you're close okay it's an idiom which means that you are close of course students as you hear new words in today's class new expressions uh vocabulary bank write them down say them make use of them asap okay as soon as you can just so that you can integrate work them into your vocabulary base okay all right next question here we go so how do you go to work or school and uh please answer i will try to find different responses from different people each time so if i miss yours don't threat i will try to catch you the next time okay all right so how do you go to work or school lydia says before the covid uh i tended to go to school by bus every day um my journey to school took about 10 minutes i arrived at 8 am but nowadays i started getting my lessons at home via online learning okay very good nice nice answer good details okay again as i mentioned in that last class you can talk about covet a little bit but it's probably getting a little bit tiring for some examiners so don't get hung up on the covid topic okay uh try to be a little bit more broad in your perspective and um and not just focus on covet this cover that it's of course it's the elephant in the room it's the hot topic of today but uh it's also getting redundant or repetitive for examiners so you might get a much better score if you're not hung up on it like many other students okay moria says i prefer going on my duke rc 390 to my school as it's not only enjoyable riding my own bike but also saves me a lot of time instead of waiting for the college bus to pick me up or and drop me back okay very good more i like it i like the details being original that's good le pay yan says i walk to school frequently as i live in i as i live near my school just two blocks away from the academic building at times i ride my bike or scooter uh to the office too all right le pay i like it again fluency uh careful with repetition okay careful with repetition all right off tubb says usually i use my own bike to reach my workplace it's very comfortable and convenient i occasionally ride the bus when i'm not able to uh ride my bike okay all right good let's keep going i can see the internet's a little bit choppy i mean we are in the holiday season so a lot of people online right now contacting their family and friends all over the world so you definitely might need to be patient in some areas where the internet connection might be slow that's common during the christmas new year season in the west all right gangster says usually i go to school with my own vehicle before the pandemic but now due to the pandemic i'm studying online from home okay gangster again not bad but you'll notice that that's a quite a redundant or repetitive answer okay so um monday to friday i get to my downtown office on my electric scooter it is a fantastic mode of transport as it's quick and i never have to worry about parking it takes me just 10 minutes door to door all right here we go repeat after me so how do you go to work or school monday to friday i get to my downtown office on my electric scooter it is a fantastic mode of transport as it's quick and i never have to worry about parking it takes just 10 minutes door to door all right being original now let's keep going to our general question so here the examiner will say okay now we'll ask you some more questions let's uh talk about parks okay so the topics for part one are going to be a general topic that most people should be able to uh talk about for instance talking about parks why not all right how often do you go to a park it's very commonly the first question asking you how often something happens okay so how often do you go to a park give me a nice full sentence answer for this one now when you're giving answers and you're practicing at home always practice answer plus explanation plus example okay that should be your foundations for your nice high band score all right okay kyber says i frequently go to a park i would say three to four times a week because it's useful for both my mental and physical health as i enjoy breathing the clean air and getting some exercise okay very nice full sentence answer well done okay sudai shukura says i usually go to school by bus but i sometimes go on foot because i don't want to waste money on the bus ride okay that's for the previous one sure that works it's original it's good chin tun patel says i'm ardent to go to the park every morning it keeps my mind optimistic and keeps my head above the water to release my stress from my work okay chin tun careful with your use of idioms especially over use of idiom keeps my head above water awkward in this context okay for a native year that would be kind of like it's a misplaced idiom so with misplaced idioms be very very careful okay instead of ardent to go to the park every morning i would say adamant i'm adamant to go to the park every morning it sounds better okay all right van phum says well i frequently hit the park which is near my home for recuperating and enjoying some green space although i'm quite up to my ears in work okay again really careful students with idioms that are awkwardly placed so um the first one is okay so where you say i hit the park uh near my home um that's okay that one's it's not perfect but it's okay i usually hit the gym or i hit the running track okay it's something that we do with great activity okay or i hit the swimming pool when you hit something it means do it very actively the park if you're just strolling around you're not really hitting the park you're just strolling around okay now that last idiom where you say i'm up to my uh neck in work it's off topic those are the kinds of places where the examiner will interrupt you because it's i'm not asking you you know uh what you're doing with work or how much work you have so that's kind of going off topic and it sounds like you're forcing that idiom so be careful with that after says well to be honest i usually do not go to the park because i'm literally indulged in my studies but i go there once in a blue moon when guests come over okay again same idea here you want to be on topic okay students don't use expressions like well to be honest um they're awkward they're overused okay i hope you're honest i mean you're in an ielts exam why wouldn't you be honest about a question of how often do you go to a park it's just it's a filler okay so avoid unnecessary fillers you can use filler but not unnecessary ones all right uh so you should always be honest so here we go uh when you answer a question like how often give quantitative and qualitative information so i frequently go to the park i would say three to four times a week there is a beautiful park uh just 15 minutes from my flat on foot it's on market island and i go there for both running as well as relaxing in fact i was just there yesterday morning for an 8k run okay so here we go notice the qualitative and quantitative information okay what is frequently for me frequently is three to four times a week so here we go repeat after me how often do you go to a park i frequently go to the park i would say three to four times a week there's a beautiful park just 15 minutes from my flat on foot it's on margaret island and i go there for both running as well as relaxing in fact i was just there yesterday morning for an 8k run okay so next question stay on topic be precise you'll get high band scores okay answer explanation example which is your favorite park to visit okay which is your favorite park to visit give me a nice full sentence answer for this one okay cutie says luckily where i'm living there are three parks i visit um every evening there and sometimes in the mornings also yesterday i visited there with my sister and got some fresh air stu t i think that was for the previous one it's a good answer okay all right uh philip smart is asking sir um does one need to agree with the examiner's question most of the time what if i hate going to the park what should i assume if i don't like it will it affect my next question uh philip good question yeah uh it's good to be in agreement most of the time answering positively uh makes for better conversation okay so just imagine if you're talking to someone and you ask them a question like what's your favorite ice cream and they're like i don't like ice cream and then you're like okay well that was a conversation stopper and if i'm trying to assess your score then that's going to be really difficult so in some cases it's better to just make it up okay you don't have to be truthful you don't have to say to be honest okay you just have to speak that's what's important to be fluent and that's often easier when you're in agreement or you're positive now for this one to be very clear with the answer um i might say something like um an outdoor person so i rarely go to the park maybe once or twice a year and friends ask me to go out for a walk the last time i remember being in a park was in the summertime uh with one of my cousins okay you can answer like that but you just have to be very fluent all right it's still very important to be fluent because your goal here is to show your communication skills in english all right okay sagar sawant says there are many parks in my area which are short distance from my flat but i prefer visiting uh cenorita park to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the sunset along with some running okay cigar very good so you go to that park cenorita park because you love the sunset very nice okay uh rajat says my favorite park is atal park let me try to find you again there rajat okay so again rajat dawan says my favorite park is a tall park it has such uh lush big green trees and a pond full of clear blue water and lots of cradles for children okay i'm not sure what you mean by the cradles for children but uh sounds like a beautiful park okay all right okaduwa says my favorite park to visit is the park close to my children's school it's very spacious and has lots of sand with a lot of trees and flowers okay okadua not bad if you know the name of the park then let me know what it is okay all right let's see some more here okay so here's my answer coming up uh which is your favorite park to visit the park i love going to the most is called beacon hill park in downtown victoria canada this park not only has a diverse fauna or sorry flora with loads of beautiful flowers but also many different kinds of animals like peacocks and squirrels as well it is surrounded on one side by the sublime pacific ocean okay uh so here we go uh repeat to me how often or sir your favorite park to visit park i love going to the most is called beacon hill park in downtown victoria canada this park not only has a diverse flora with loads of beautiful flowers but also many different kinds of animals like peacocks and squirrels as well it is surrounded on one side by the sublime pacific ocean okay so check that out when you have a minute google beacon hill park victoria and you will know why it is my uh favorite park don't do it now but later when you get the chance okay that's my hometown victoria it's usually where i'm at all right so let's go to the next question what do you like to do when you are there okay so here they're following up and you'll get more and more of these types of questions in part three but you can definitely get one or two of these even in part one so give me a nice full sentence answer for this one what do you like to do when you are there okay so lydia says as i mentioned previously i'm a nature lover therefore i frequently take many pictures of different types of flowers and plants such as roses and bluebell flowers not only that but i also like doing some physical exercise my sister and i uh used to pick marvelous flowers and run for at least 30 minutes okay very nice lydia good answer multiple points very visual nice fluency it's accurate zakra just retracted her answer which is okay just leave it up there i'll gladly read it and give you some feedback uh jay priet says i like to do a plethora of activities when i'm there i jog i run i sit on the bench and see the fishes and the crystal clear uh pond i also love to stare at the blue sky love to stare we stare at the blue sky okay that's the accurate english expression there okay very good bipin says i love to watch the huge mountains uh silently that brightens uh as they uh glow from the sunshine um and take some photos okay bippin careful with your word choice okay careful with your word choice make sure you use language that is accurate okay all right qobilidin says i'm a really big fan of uh taking in all of the surrounding atmosphere and reading some interesting books while i'm there it seems funny but it's my hobby that doesn't seem funny at all to me um a lot of people do that in the parks so it's totally fine okay uh rashika says i go there with my family and i like to walk along the columbia river bank or sit in a chair and talk about the latest movie with my husband all right rashika nice that sounds like a fun relaxing time okay so um i love to take pictures of the animals and plants also i take my daughter to the petting zoo as she really enjoys that in addition i go jogging there and play sport disc with my friends in fact i was there just last weekend and my friends and i played sports and had a barbecue okay so here we go uh repeat what do you like to do when you are there i love to take pictures of the animals and plants also i take my daughter to the petting zoo and she really enjoys that in addition i go jogging there and play sport discs with my friends in fact i was there just last weekend and my friends and i played sports and had a barbecue okay now the examiner might look at me like really during covid but they won't okay because they don't care about the truth uh if they ask then you can say yeah but we were social distancing the whole time and we were outside okay um so again they just care about your fluency all right okay uh here we go next question have parks changed since you were a child and in what ways give me a nice full sentence answer for this one again answer explain example in a hint hint you should reflect the grammar of the question so identify what kind of grammar the question is using and then reflect that in your answer okay so parts changed since you were a child and in what ways okay all right sharzu ray says when i was small let me see if i can catch it when i was small the parks used to be smaller with only trees and flowers but now the parks are spacious with tons of unique flora and playgrounds for children okay nice alright so parks have gotten bigger okay use the present perfect parks have gotten bigger kali kuzaman says when i was a child i went to the park with my parents at that time there weren't very good facilities for the public but nowadays the local councillors and government have put in a lot of funding for park development and they are much better equipped with running tracks and sports equipment as well as playgrounds okay all right uh kali kazu accuse aman i made some corrections there and added the present perfect take note of that okay your abisha says yeah absolutely um it's getting easier to import various kinds of crops and flowers uh and the managements of most parks tend to have be complete with their own plants compared to the past when i was in the ch a child okay yeah be sure i'm a little bit unclear of what you're saying there consider revising that okay and uh make sure that you're reflecting the grammar of the question the present perfect okay all right simranjeet says yes absolutely i have noticed a massive change in the parts near my place previously the place was just used for walking and jogging but now some gym equipment has been added so that people can work out yeah shimranjit i've noticed that as well a lot of parks have gym equipment which has been added over the years alongside the running tracks yeah definitely okay so um i have noticed many upgrades to parks over the years since my childhood when i was little most of the parks were wild and had very few facilities what i mean is that the parks have undergone a a lot of landscaping and they are now organized with flower beds and trimmed trees also there are running tracks and gym equipment in many of the parks or i should say exercise equipment it makes more sense and many uh and many of the parks that hadn't been there 20 years ago okay so again quantitative laying language like 20 years ago helps to improve scores and making sure that you have the present perfect when the question is present perfect that's really really key okay so here we go repeat after have parts changed since you were a child and in what ways i have noticed many upgrades to parks over the years since my childhood when i was little most of the parks were wild and had very few facilities what i mean is that the parks have undergone a lot of landscaping and they are now organized with flower beds and trim trees also there are running tracks and exercise equipment in many of the parks that hadn't been there 20 years ago noticed my negative use of the present perfect that kind of language you pick up points for grammatical range and for using complex language all right so students uh here's a couple more questions for you to practice at home maybe on our websites with some new speaking partners what is your favorite part of nature and why do you
