hey folks welcome back to another video for hearts of iron 4 with me bittersteel today i have another fun one for you or rather two fun ones playing as romania we're going to try our hands at two achievements one would be death or dishonor or cake which will involve eating a slice of each of our neighbors taking their court territory and owning it and the other would be neither death nor dishonor which i believe involves not losing a single province of your starting territory before 1942 and occupying either moscow or berlin and we're gonna try both of these at the same time this will be interesting i promise naturally we'll be playing as romania we will uh of course be playing on iron man mode with historical ai focuses on for that predictable gameplay let's hop on in but first if divisions not bad let's uh split these up organize the army somewhat yeah that'll do our first target will be hungary so just gonna send everyone to the hungarian border and uh just just look at the hungarians menacingly now let's look at our production next we won't need light tanks we will need a lot of infantry equipment and industry-wise that's about it we're not the most powerful economy out there not by a long shot we'll add in some more artillery once it becomes available but mostly we need to invest in infantry equipment heavily next up construction we'll start out with a single mill i believe we'll get this finished in time and then we'll follow up with level five forts all along our soviet border and our future soviet border for those who are not aware um this is historical meaning germany and the ussr will do the molotov ribbon drop pact dividing poland between them meaning this province and this province here this uh polish border will turn soviet so we have to garrison it if we are to survive and eventually your fort line will look something like this level 5 forts not the best but they will just give us the edge we need to hold off the red tide well at least until the germans declare their push on moscow research-wise nothing fancy here same old machine tools construction and research oh yeah and don't bother with the navy we're stuck in the black sea and uh we won't be able to compete with the soviet navy i'll just put everything on convoys also try and trade with the germans as much as possible to keep them friendly now for focuses we will be instituting a royal dictatorship at the start after which we will turn our attention towards the balkans dominance tree giving us lovely war goals on our neighbors or simply outright puppeting them depending on their choices in the event presented to them both outcomes work the specific path we'll be taking is start out with institute royal dictatorship then we'll hop over to balkans dominance since we don't have the required manpower to do the focuses of align hungary we need 400k manpower here or puppet bulgaria need the same amount we'll simply go down these other two focuses on the right side we will start out with fortifying the borders giving us a nice construction speed bonus to the forts we will need this to be ready for the soviet union and revise the constitution giving us some bonuses when it comes to political advisers and a bit of a recruitable manpower which is pretty great now in the time it takes for us to do these four focuses one two three four we will be pumping out some troops so we'll be able to take the other focuses and the quickest way to do that is to train cavalry brigades yes many cavalry brigades now if we can squeeze out a total of 27 divisions that will put us in a good spot to work through the entire tree we'll be recruiting these at a high priority and we'll simply be pumping them out whenever we can just immediately deploy them doesn't matter if they're fully equipped or not or fully trained doesn't matter one bit and while that's happening we'll work on our royal dictatorship so while all this is going on let's set the game speed to the max and see where we end up shall we and almost immediately upon starting your game you'll run into the biggest hurdle presented by archaic achievement we cannot get rid of king carroll ii and king carol ii likes to embezzle money for his mistress giving us events like this throughout the game the top option is always the worst one it effectively destroys our civilian economy for 90 days so that his wife or mistress can have whatever she wants then we have the bottom option where in exchange for a 90 political power the terrible terrible effect on our economy is reduced to only three percent instead of 20 percent so either we take the hit every time or we will be spending enormous amounts of political power minimizing the damage now at the start of the game we cannot afford to lose too much political power we need our decisions and we need our advisors but once we have the decent advisors and romania sadly does not have many great advisors we will have some political power free to start taking the bottom option and minimize the damage but for now we'll still have to eat these um very poor modifiers you'll also notice i'm only trading for steel and i'm not trading for tungsten for the artillery that's because we don't need all that much artillery right now and i'd rather not lose the one civilian factory it would take to get the tungsten because we really need to build those forts and our economy is weak as it is behold this is what king carroll has done to my economy we have two available civilian factories thanks carol also you will notice that our stability is not all that great and once we go to war it will only go down what we really like is for it to always be over 50 percent just to keep us safe from some pretty nasty events so what i recommend is that when you have some political power available that you don't need right away for an advisor or you don't have scrolled away so you can avoid the next one of carol's big parties or his house buying consider taking improved worker conditions to get your stability up and if war support isn't an issue also consider promises of peace just to get a little bit of extra stability it's really bad sitting below 50 while you're at war it can really ruin the game for you now our first batch of horses is done we are sadly out of manpower so it's one of those things we'll have to rectify eventually and situation's not going to improve because every time we deploy these horse divisions we'll simply convert them to the infantry why well the infantry divisions are larger they can contain more manpower meaning we'll have more fielded manpower once some more adult males start trickling in oh and on that note all our divisions will be simple infantry divisions we don't have the um diverse and powerful economy required to start fiddling with armored divisions it's just going to be foot soldiers till we have a sizable increase in our economy and with our first focus done we also have a nice batch of bonus political power and seeing as we'll need a lot of political power throughout this run our first choice is going to be the silent workhorse that 50 gain sorry fifteen percent gain is pretty great and on to our next focus the balkans dominance now as for research i will not constantly be calling out what to do i would recommend sticking to the basic industry and research bonuses and focusing almost entirely on the infantry at the start we only have three slots we'll unlock some more through our focus tree but we don't really have the economy to support armor and sadly we also don't really have a powerful economy to support a large air fleet now if you want it's certainly possible to have like two maybe three factories on fighters but they will not make a massive impact on the game in this run i'm going to forego fighters for the time being one thing i would recommend is get superior firepower doctrine as soon as possible this defense modifier is going to be spicy once the soviets come knocking 20 minutes later and with balkan's dominance done it's time to move on either we pick fortify the borders right now giving us some faster construction speed on the forts let's have a look we're not working on a fort just yet we'll forego that for now and instead we'll first revise the constitution and then fortify the borders and with our second political power investment seeing as we're at zero manpower limited conscription is the way to go forward and with that manpower finally trickling in keep spamming out these divisions now with the first two armies filled up i'm not going to convert all of these cavalry divisions that are still coming in to infantry right away i'm going to be keeping a few of them as cavalry for their speed we'll be fighting hungry soon and i don't want to draw that war out so i will be using some cavalry divisions that can run amok behind their lines once we create a gap as you can see we're almost at that 400 000 mark that will allow us to move forward into our tree in fact once we get these uh to full strength will be at 500 and that will be enough for the next tier namely divide yugoslavia and split czechoslovakia who both require 500k so this is roughly the amount of divisions you'll need now with our revised constitution political power investments are a lot cheaper meaning we can do them at 112 pp and our next investment is going to be partial mobilization we can't go up to war economy for now because we'd have to be fighting a stronger country which we won't be for quite a bit so we'll just stick with partial mobilization get a bit of extra factories and with the border fortify it's time for our first ventures into balkan's dominance our first step will be to align hungary and seeing as war is on the horizon we'll also start investing in the military high command and get ourselves an infantry expert 12 seconds later there we go we have finished align hungary oh and the anti-common turn pact has popped up let's join this to keep mr mustache man happy with us the kingdom of hungary defined you will almost always get this event hungary seems to be hard-coded not to like you we can either back down which is not our way or get ourselves a war goal we will make them see reason by the bayonet now before we move on our next focus is going to be puppet bulgaria so let's take this focus and to make sure that they'll um be more inclined to agree with us we'll also improve our relations with them just to make sure now for our war with the hungarians simply declare the war and those a bit of micromanagement as we uh make our way to victory [Music] and after that initial break hungarian capitulation comes quickly as the cavalry just takes victory points at will nice amount of equipment we've taken from them as well and we'll simply take all their states and that concludes our first slice of the pie let's prepare for our second line the entire army up on the yugoslav border oh and this is a good time to get rid of the horses they can be infantry now we've also gained a nice bit of army experience might as well spend it we will take our infantry division and basically just add another infantry unit to it bringing up to 20 combat with this is a pretty great for defensive purposes as an offensive tool it's far from ideal it's nothing desirable but it is what we have to work with right now the economy isn't ready to start mass producing the artillery we would need for an offensive template they suggested basis to work with we also don't have to create a standard 7 infantry 2 artillery template because we will get one for free further down our focus tree you will see and the rest of the army experience we can either hoard to spend on the doctrines or if you feel inclined to do so to alter our cavalry template into something a little more robust for suppression and we have another batch of political power seeing as romania is sitting on a large amount of oil i like to go up to free trade get some more bonuses and happy days the bulgarians have submitted we now have a bulgarian puppet next on the chopping block will be yugoslavia three weeks later and there we go we now have yugoslavia events to fight yugoslavia complete yugoslavia has two different outcomes either we get this event where we can either ask the germans for some support in cutting up yugoslavia into different little factions we will never take this option we don't want the germans to get any stronger we want to get stronger so we will strike them down giving us an annex war goal there's also a second option a different event that can fire i believe it has to do with both our army strength and our good relations to germany if you have good relations with germany the yugoslavs can voluntarily decide to basically split up in their component nations they will split off in a montenegro croatia and the serbia and all three will be your puppets both have their advantages as for our next focus we will be heading towards a split czechoslovakia and to do that we will now make sure mr mustache man really likes us let us get rid of these czechoslovaks all in all their army is considerably weaker than ours partly because they're also putting troops on the bulgarian border and we won't be calling in bulgaria right away we can mostly push in without problems also you'll see that yugoslavia is guaranteed by czechoslovakia but we are also guaranteed by czechoslovakia so it doesn't count crazy how politics work and after he decidedly one-sided the war we have taken all of yugoslavia now what you could do is simply to satellite all the components that make up yugoslavia this will allow all those individual countries to run through their little focus trees giving you free factories and access to their manpower pool and all you have to do is annex one diplomatically later on in the game plus you won't have to garrison the area alternatively you could simply annex the entire area for yourself but i don't feel like garrisoning all of that so i'm simply going to make all of these into my puppet there we go we now have a bunch of puppets and because none of them has the yugoslavia attack there also won't be any funny business with the focuses now it's time to line up our troops on the czechoslovak border and hope for the good outcome in our next event oh and there is some more political power to spend we could take a chief of army either the offensive one if you're looking to attack czechoslovakia i hope we won't have to or the defensive one who will come in very handy when the soviets decide they want best arabia i don't think we need that 10 extra offense to um go toe-to-toe with czechoslovakia just yet and we have time before the russians show up so i will be spending that political power elsewhere on the backroom backstabber giving us another five percent political power gain now for this split czechoslovakia what's going to happen is the germans will have an event where we ask them if they please please please wanna share the spoils of czechoslovakia with us if they accept and the czechoslovaks accept the pressure the germans put on them czechoslovakia will be cut in half essentially the sudetenland and the core territories of bohemia and moravia will go to germany and all those other parts eastern slovakia western slovakia and everything underneath will become a puppet state of romania this is the ideal outcome now if either germany doesn't like us enough and decline are asking or if the czechoslovaks think they can take us both out they might decide to uh put up a bit of a fight in that case we'll have to make do with a regular peace deal not ideal but also something we can work with 20 minutes later there we go because the germans liked us they have accepted our offer now all that's left is to see how the checks respond we got the bad event and the czechoslovaks have declined so we'll simply um resolve matters this way [Music] and uh since the germans also get a war goal they'll join in on the fun we have to be quick here and take as much territory as we can because germany will be greedy very greedy [Music] and they have capitulated we did manage to um get some work done here now i would not recommend absolutely do not recommend puppeting them and the end result is that you now have a czechoslovakia to which all of germany's focuses still apply meaning they'll declare war on them for their sudetenland that they already have yeah that's not gonna work out great for us we don't wanna fight germany so instead we'll take slices of the country that we can afford and unfortunately we can't really afford a lot ideally i would want to take southern slovakia but already that's too expensive so we'll have to make do with carpathian ruthenia and see what the germans leave for us not a lot so uh we managed to take two provinces not ideal but something we can work with yes we'll need to extend our fault line by three provinces i believe we will be able to in time plus these are hills and mountains so they're relatively defensible but it does stretch our line again but well we have another slice of the pie so let's recap we have a slice of czechoslovakia we have a slice of hungary and in the fridge we still have a slice of bulgaria and the slice of yugoslavia already so all that we still need is poland and the soviets and we can take soviet and polish land in the same peace deal anyway now with all those early game wars behind us we can start setting up for our defense against the soviet union first off what i usually do is take a few of these foreign divisions and park them along my southern coast you see the russians really like to navel invade and we want to prevent that we could just plop down troops on the harbors that could work but that leaves the romanian heartland really close to the shore open to them and if they take our capital and some of these other victory points that would give them enough supply to keep pushing for a little bit so better safe than sorry i'm putting these shitty puppet divisions along my entire shore and the rest of the military will have a nice little fallback line all along the future and current soviet border and to ensure that we can actually um hold this border will need more divisions so now be a good time to start training some extra units ideally you want to have at least three full armies of infantry more if you can manage now focus wise it's time to head in other directions most notably this part of the tree in the middle here giving us extra military factories some other bonuses some civilian factories basically this will beef up our industry a good choice considering we have a lot of forts to build and a lot of troops to supply we also seem to be out of manpower again which is sad since we cannot go up to extensive conscription just yet we can however get our army defense expert now now to deal with our manpower shortage once we have a few of these factories in we will head down his majesty's loyal government and militarized the sentinels giving us an extra one percent recruitable pop national defense industry done i'm going to opt for agrarian reforms first and then make a little sidetrack towards militarized sentinels and we have enough political power for another investment however we cannot go up to war economy we cannot extend our conscription laws and the rest of these bonuses are rather well lack luster so to say nothing really specific for defending our country against the soviets or for pushing into soviet territory we could take the prince of terror for a little bit of extra non-core manpower and reducing the damage to our garrisons i don't think that's the right choice right now what i want to work on is my stability so we'll be pushing up our improved worker conditions and promises of peace and we have another chunk of political power seeing as we're already doing whatever we can to increase our stability let's invest in our government again we could take the prince of terror i don't think that's quite required just yet instead we'll be investing in the industrial concern now for future pp investments most picks won't really matter romania doesn't have many very good ones also since we've taken most of the important advisors and we're not currently available to take other stability increasing decisions if you have the political power don't be afraid now to start um choosing the lesser of the two evils whenever the king does something stupid and with the sentinels militarized it's time to move on further down in the industry tree we could take another research slot here or we could head down the army branch to get the reserve divisions a little bit of extra recruitable pop and the free unit with a template to go with it but we need more factories we need more steel we need those forts built so we'll head down here at least until we've done the henoduara steel works one hour later all right henry stillworks is in we can either get two more military factories but considering manpower is a bit scarce we'll start heading towards reserve divisions first and with the royal guards national focus done we now have access to the royal guards division this template here is a basic 20 with infantry division with artillery now what we can do once we have the army experience is double these numbers turning it into a 14-4 now we also have a healthy amount of these uh foreign divisions on our shoreline we won't need this many just to keep soviets from naval invading a good alternative use for them is to set up a little fallback line behind our own lines and assign every division not needed for coastal defense to it that way we can cycle them in and out of combat at our will shoring up the um defense when needed okay with our fort line nearly complete now is the time to start pumping out more military factories just build military factories in your highest level provinces just build military factories in your highest infrastructure provinces we are going to need them six hours later okay so the soviets have started justifying on us good news the uk has guaranteed their independence so with the soviets preparing to take best arabia from us they will start mustering a frightening amount of units on our border luckily we have a fairly decent fort line we have a relatively large army of good templates well for defensive purposes at least and we have a fallback line of units ready to pour in and assist in the defense if we ever see red bubbles pop up because as you might remember we cannot afford to take one step back never retreat we must hold this line well in theory we could give up some of carpathian ruthenia but that's actually quite defensible terrain so we don't want to walk out of there this is where the ussr will demand best arabia now if we give up west arabia we will no longer be able to do neither death nor dishonor unacceptable we will not give up our territory without a fight p warned the ussr will come at you swinging even with our rather defensive line in place this is going to be hard you will need to do quite a bit of micromanagement eventually the mustache man will come to our rescue when he starts his operation barbarossa but until then we're on our own and with that soviet declaration of war it's time to slow the game way way way down and micro our defensive effort all right first order of business spend some of this political power ideally i would now bump up the war economy but i think manpower is a larger concern so extensive conscription is okay so these next couple of months maybe years will be some hard fighting you want to keep the speed down and micromanage your divisions as much as you can and by micromanage i mean whenever you see these red bubbles pop up where it looks like you might lose send in some reserve divisions from the second line or reinforce them with neighboring divisions from tiles next the door that aren't under immense pressure whenever you have the feeling that the soviets might break through now i realize this will not be the most riveting footage to watch so i'll be cutting out a lot of it now the uk is often going to be inviting us into the allies until the soviet union has capitulated and we know where we stand with the axis or the allies you're better off not joining the allies now if at the end of the soviet peace deal you are left empty-handed for some reason you could not get your hands on moscow or for some reason you did not manage to get a polish core we still have the option of joining the allies to take down the germans and get our stuff that way as long as we haven't joined the war against the allies as an access member basically we're just going to be dead weight to the germans [Music] now if you see certain units in these battles having very low organization and you have reserves available plus the battle isn't almost over consider pulling them out basically just select the unit that has the law organization and order them to retreat that way they can recover some of their organization and you can send in a unit from the back line to take their place and a surefire way of holding your line in dire times is the last stand order now this can end up being quite costly so don't use this all the time but in cases like this where we have a very low number red bubble we're about to lose this battle but reinforcements are on the way i just like to play it safe and hit the last stand we cannot afford to lose territory three weeks later [Music] oh thank god our units arrived just in time that would have been the end of that run if they uh they were late so what happened here is the units in the combat lost their organization and while there were still units in the reserve they did not join the battle on time so you have to be on the ball when this happens always have some units backing them up so that when one unit leaves combat there's another one ready in the reserves to take them on because just because of the unit is in the tile doesn't mean it's in the combat so always have to make sure that uh this green bar doesn't run out before there's others here to take their place i'm also going to start prioritizing artillery production over infantry equipment because one we capture a lot of infantry equipment from the russians and two we will need a lot of artillery once we start making offensive divisions by uh the time the germans attack so we have a big 40-width combat unit ready to start hitting the russians where it hurts and we'll need a lot of artillery for that artillery is slow to produce so i want to be on the ball with that now i do think i've made a little bit of a mistake i still had them set on a fallback line along the border and i just now switched to an actual a frontline order and uh well the ai has decided to completely reshuffle the front line so this this might actually be the end of my run we'll we'll see one eternity later so in exchange for 97 000 dead romanian soldiers we have gotten rid of 1.27 million soviets seems like a fair deal seeing as we're sitting on a giant pile of army experience anyway might as well start work on our future offensive division this is a standard 40 with infantry division with artillery this will go through the soviets like in knife through butter it's not ideal but seeing as our economy right now doesn't really have enough leeway to start making tanks in large enough numbers to matter we'll be changing out one of our armies or more depending on just how much equipment we can manage the script together into this in the future when we're ready to start going on the offensive one hour later oh stalin you've thrown away two million men and you haven't even taken an inch of romania i've also decided that i might want to um mess with the soviet union a little bit in the form of collaboration governments well you never know if it works out and making the soviets capitulate a little quicker tends to be beneficial i have no intention of walking all the way to vladivostok over here oh sir i do wonder where stalin keeps finding these volunteers to charge into our machine gun line because 2.6 million dead soviets and they show no sign of stopping and taking a quick look along our border and you can see that the um soviet divisions aren't really in great shape anymore a lot of these uh yellow bars are getting quite low quite low indeed i think that by the time we are ready to counter attack they'll just fold like a cheap suit eventually germany breaks the molotov ribbon truck packed great germany is pretty much going to stomp the soviet union now and we're gonna go along for the ride and in preparation let's set up one of our offensive divisions we're a little bit short and toward artillery that's fine [Music] [Music] ah good news the mustache man has finally woken up now this will be a good time to join the axis this will allow us to swap some territory with them making sure we have access to polish territory and giving us the opportunity to control moscow netting us at least one achievement so we're going to accept his offer but we are not going to be accepting any call to arms we're going to be a complete dead weight and just use the axis as an uh a means of dealing with soviets we're not going to get involved with the allies looks like axes and allies are fighting it out in our territory well we're not technically involved i love this technicality [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well in terms of war participation we're still looking pretty good here so if we can keep it up at this rate well we might just be looking at uh two achievements in one below without having to fight the axis or the allies [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] well i'm fairly certain that at this point soviet union isn't really going to be mustering much of a defense we'll see some red bubbles every now and then but uh this is just the point where you draw a line and let the orders run especially with germany's help there's nothing they can do oh wow i'm i'm really surprised by this mildly competent italy in africa if you even manage them encirclements [Music] because the um the oh so benevolent usa is at war with the ussr due to their involvement in the allies and we're not technically at war with them they'll still be willing to lend lisa's a ton of stuff really oh this is great [Music] [Music] so [Music] so ah looks like we've cut the soviet front in two and all these uh well it's not that many but all these divisions will perish in the caucasus great great one more nail in the soviet coffin they're close there shouldn't be too much of a fight left in them many months later el war participation still looking good germans are catching up and uh our tiny little bulgaria here the good little puppet they are have also contributed good boy good boy we also control moscow so in another 16 days we will have the achievement neither death nor dishonor we'll have made it to 1942 will control the capital state of the soviet union and we will not have lost a single of our starting states so that's one in the bag i don't see us losing this one there we go the soviet union has decided to fold a little earlier due to our little espionage and got some good equipment off them great news and due to our war participation being high we get to go first which is great now first things first we want to take some polish states at least one and we want to take some russian states now in theory this would be enough you would get a polish state a russian state and you'd have everything you need for the death or dishonor or cake achievement once you annex your puppets but well since we've got all these points why not spend them so long story short in this peace deal i decided to just take a polish state from the russians one of their own states odessa here not important witch then i just made a bunch of puppets out of everything i could and then finally puppeted the soviet union putting a little bit of a roadblock in front of germany and with that we can conclude our peace deal alright a quick recap so where are we at now we have finished the neither death nor dishonor achievement that's one in the bag and we are well on our way to getting death or dishonor or cake we own a piece of czechoslovakia we own a piece of hungary well all of hungary we own a piece of poland we own a piece of the soviet union and we are well on our way to owning a piece of yugoslavia and bulgaria to complete the achievement we would just need to annex the bulgarians and the serbs or any other of these tiny little puppets that have popped up as for the war with the allies no real point in getting involved in that mess might be fun to play around with them once we finished both achievements now the quickest way to get your puppets autonomy down would be to send them a very large amount of convoys sadly we aren't really producing a lot of them we have 450 now i think we took most of those off the soviet union we can send those to our puppet for a one-time drop of 315 autonomy that's not bad and we can uh just throw in some more random equipment as well okay that's one more down that uh gives us the yugoslav territories so it's just bulgaria next on the chopping block so much later that the old narrator got tired of waiting and they had to hire a new one and finally 1943 i'm sure that those of you are more skilled at handling subject nations can do this a lot quicker but here we are time to integrate bulgaria and finish our final achievement death or dishonor or cake voila we now have a slice of all our neighboring countries while at the same time we still have good old carol in place and we have not done all parties must and we haven't gone down force application or handle the king and nope king michael's coup has not been done either so that's another achievement in the bag a good two for one deal i'd say i hope you've enjoyed this video i had a lot of fun
