Quinton Earl Hammond say a man for [Applause] [Music] day by day dear lord of the three things I pray to see thee more clearly to love thee more dearly to follow thee more nearly day by day Lord let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in the Saint for Lord you are my strength and you are my Redeemer in the precious name of the risen Christ amen giving thanks and praise to our God who does all things well I share in part the testimony of one Pontius Pilate who after examining Jesus said I find no fault in him and now have Pilate and I differ as he reached this conclusion by examination I reached the same conclusion by trust I just trusted him and I found him to be everything that mama said he was and even more to our president and host pastor dr. L Jackson to our presider tonight to all of you my father's children and to the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Pratt City that church has been putting up with me since 1980 I was just a little old fellow I was just alone but I thank God for their presence here tonight a man they heeded the pastor's call and I thank God for them being present and for your present a man it's just a blessing to be alive now one thing I do know is that in come up here to I'll preach nobody Colet the caliber breaching that we're receiving this week I'd be kind of what they used to call investment of brand-new food yeah brand-new the category has not been discovered that could encapsulate what a fool I would be if I could up and try to out pre stolen log Paul hadn't he blessed us this way [Applause] I've been praying mightily for him today but yes yeah since they put my name on the program I ought to say a little something a man y'all can I do something be a personal because my wife is here and and I'm taking this personal privilege because next week if the law allows us to see actually the 16th of June which is Father's Day but we'll be celebrating 40 years of marriage where you there is a man a man I ran into one of her classmates today and and she said I don't remember you datin her in high school that's I didn't first time I ever laid eyes on her was the night she graduated and I actually went to the graduation to meet somebody else but that date got cancelled in my hand and I ran into a little bit later at the 16th Street Baptist Church and I said the Lord is my shepherd and I shall see who I won't bless His Holy Name I thank her for the support across the years but what I want to do tonight what I won't do tonight is uh tell your story about a young man no Little Rock Arkansas dear friend of mine by the name of pastor Arnett Dawson yeah that's uh not Dawson Dotson Arnett Dotson senior he told me something that happened at his house the weeks embracing Christmas this happened well over 30 years ago you know sometimes my memory is here in some time in April I hope you can you know have a minute birthday is on edge you [Music] some of us remember when they had children's shows on television on Saturday morning you know cartoons and on the weeks leading up to Christmas the Airways would be bombarded with advertisements of toys because there was a time when children had toys and pastor Dotson said one Saturday morning his song when we call AJ's and AJ was watching his favorite cartoon and commercial came on advertising this car it was a stock car a replica of Richard Petty's racecar it was a black charger and dual exhaust wide tires chrome rims and raised white letters fireball on each side that had the number 44 inscribed on the sides of it and the car could do all kinds of tricks there was a remote control you press buttons and the car would do all kinds of things it would turn around and back up run right up to the wall and stop it even do a wheelie I mean it was and AJ saw that car and he said daddy daddy please all I want for Christmas is that car he's an AJ were at him and his wife every day about that car and that took place what he said to his wife he said when we go shopping for the children the first thing we're gonna do is get that car for AJ for I have to strangle him y'all with him in the gun room so he got the car and he wrapped it up in a nice gift wrap and put a ball in a tag that said to AJ from daddy and mommy with love the days of embracing Christmas AJ would sneak up under the tree pick the box up in look at it see if it was about the size of that car he shook it time - yeah and then when you see his parents coming he slide it back under then act like had nothing happened Christmas morning finally came him and he said he heard something coming down the hall like a drum roll it was just that was AJ's feet running down at home he had a hook slide slide and slid right under that tree and grabbed that boxing in one motion ripped that box open and there he had his car cradled it to his to his breast and he he said dad at paint yet he was jumping all up and down and excitement in anticipation of what his car would do because he saw the car on television do all kinds of tricks and he was anticipating his car doing those kind of tricks and he he put the car on the floor took the remote-control out and pressed the button nothing happened it looked like the same car that was going television it was black dual exhaust and fire balls on the side wide rim tiles were raised white letters it it looked just like the car that was on television push the button again caught in moving faster said Weidman much money as I pay for this car it better work so he picks the box up and in small writing on the side of the box whether the letters batter is not included so what we have here on the floor was fall but no power it looked like car that was on television it had the same appearance of the car that was on television but because the batteries would not include it yeah yeah that's if you need a subject that's it right there [Applause] what I heard that immediately the Holy Spirit rushed me the Genesis 2 chapters second chapter 7 verse it says then the Lord God formed me [Music] [Applause] calmed may from the dust of the crowd stop right there we got a picture of what happened that past Dustin's house that Christmas moment because man had phone but no power he had eyes that couldn't see he had legs that couldn't walk he he had a tongue that couldn't talk he he had form he had the outward appearance but he had no power because the batteries are not included to give man power the Lord had to blew into man's nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul but before God's breath man had phone but no power not only was that a picture of what happened at pastor Dawson's house that Christmas morning but that's also a picture of many church houses on Sunday morning you've got full with fall they look like a child of God they they act like a child of God they sang like a child of God they pray like or they say prayers like a child about some of me even preach light they have song but no power because with the first birth the batteries are not included together power you must be born again don't have a witness in here yeah yeah you've got to be born over the spirit lord have mercy you don't wanna just have fun but you ought to want some power to call it on with how you look and this is why the ministers of Birmingham putting this meeting on this week because the battery that we got at our second birth run elope if you doing something even if you're working for the Lord if you if you're doing something in the world before you come here and worship at night if you trying to make another person's life more livable if you trying to share the gospel with those who are left out and leased it batteries run kind of low lord have mercy when your batter is getting old you can't feel the spirit like you used to when you batter is getting old you keep saying you like you used to when you matter is get low you can't preach life here you stir when you matter is get low you need yeah a booze and what I came by here to tell you tonight here that the batter is that we got at our second birth a rechargeable batteries [Applause] do I have a witness in it yeah yeah yeah cuz see ya sometimes sometimes you don't have time to go and get a new battery but if you got a rechargeable battery all you need to do is plug in to a source of power do I have a witness in here a man when you plug in to that power it'll recharge your battery and you can leave here with not just form but you can leave here with power there's enough people in this room tonight to turn this city upside down there's enough churches represented in this room tonight lord have mercy that if every Saints stayed home Sunday morning there are no cells in Birmingham to fill up all of these churches because in Birmingham there is no Center [Applause] [Music] laborers a few we said when we won't complain but can you finish the statement don't just stop it right there Jesus said pray to the Lord of the harvest that he was sinful laborers into his harvest now this is what I won't say before calling our city is a since there is an abundance of harvest and since there are but few workers every worker all to have a full basket don't y'all treat me like that why are you walking around here bragging about your church and your basket is half full [Applause] huh you ought to be trying to fill up your basket it has enough harvest out here to fill up all of our bases you ain't got to reach over in my basket and and get what I have harvested there's enough out here for you to fill up your own basket so that's why we're here tonight we're here tonight to recharge our spiritual batteries because as long as we stay plugged in to the power source the power from all the high will flow is that go to my seat I remember as a boy my sister's here she recalls an old television that we had at 1330 North 28th Street in Bessemer you know you had a great big ol box and a little bit of screen [Music] black and white to station 6 and 13 we had to get a another antenna when 42 came to town hyo-jung folk don't know what lord have mercy but on that old television curls that was all and all switch was broken the way we had to turn it all was to plug it in and the way we had to turn it off was to unplug oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah some of y'all remember when around 10:30 the national anthem would play [Music] [Applause] and the television would Sadoff and even though there was no program being broadcast if I fell asleep while watching the television when I woke up it was nothing but snow on the screen but the television would let me know even though I ain't saying nothing I'm still plugged up [Applause] somebody needs to lead here tonight with that testimony I'm still close my batter is a beer recharge huh I'm still plugged up I may not be in the choir but I'm plugged up I may not be on the lucious ministry but I'm I may not but I'm somebody any hair needs to leave here tonight knowing that they're plugged up [Applause] [Music] but if not you can plug in because the power source is here and ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem and Judea in Samaria and unto the uttermost pause oh the work Saints the power source is here ain't no reason in the world why anybody should leave here tonight not plugged up because the power source is here because with your first birth you got four but no power to get the power you must be born again because at that first birth the batteries will Jackson they met and to very many of my friends that are here pastor hancher certain pastor Hammonds and AMEX corded tonight by the Reverend Gwendolyn Webb so I'm happy about that amen y'all ought to just give God some praise I bring you greetings from New York City from the Chad Cooper company on Broadway and we have for the last two years been doing a play about social justice in New York that's getting ready to turn into a movie and but the play is so powerful that every time we do it in New York we have to turn people away and I said well we got to bring this plate to the south because the south is the birthplace of social justice and then particularly berming I'm a man this play deals with two civil rights attorneys suing the US Justice Department for reparations and damages done to black people therefore we bring back time travel to witnesses such as Harriet Tubman mega Evers Emmett Till in full character they tell their stories on the witness stand and then it goes into a jury deliberation a mixed jury black and white and they discuss the elephant that's in the room and that's racism look at your neighbor and say neighbor you are a part of the most profound talented smartest creative people on the planet and that's black folks the African Diaspora amen and what I like about this production is educational motivational and inspirational it's going to be on June the 30th everybody say June the 30th that's the fifth Sunday in June at 6:30 p.m. at the Boutwell auditorium and we're already over 2,000 and some people so I know it's gonna be a great turnout Emmett Till's family they're flying here from Minnesota they'll be here you have Supreme Court justices flying in from different parts that's even some Hollywood stars that are coming to be here in Birmingham because we know this is the birthplace of civil rights a man so we need you and we want you in the building on that day and we pardon it with so many of the churches in the community and we wanted to come tonight and I think dr. Yeoh Jackson and all the pastors who comprise this Baptist ministers union to all of you the men and women of God they love the Lord and are called according to his purpose we've been blessed tonight by this music ministry let's think God for all of these let us and worship thank God for our lexer tonight the one and the only dark ue heavens we just thank God that God has allowed us to assemble together again in the House of Prayer under the good news that God is not dead he is alive and he's alive in our hearts if it is your custom that you stand for the word of God ask that you would do so and I want to summon your senses and invite your intellect to the book of Acts chapter number 16 I want to lift this familiar passage of Scripture beginning with verse number 25 Acts chapter 16 verse 25 the Bible should read and at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them and suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison were shaken and immediately all the doors were open and everyone's bands were loosed I want to tag this text it's about that time [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] the time of our text the Apostle Paul along with his band of partnering missionaries have experienced success in ministry and they're in this particular chapter there are recorded a strain of conversions that have happened in Europe Paul having got a divine call to leave throw ass and go to Macedonia there he settled in its capital city called Philip I and there in Philip I ministry and revival broke out round verse 13 he gets in the town and the first thing he does is set up a prayer meeting by the river [Music] I'm time we get to verse 14 15 and 16 he encounters this business woman by the name of Lydia and her and all of her family got saved and baptized after they leave the baptism of this woman's household he encounters a demonically possessed girl who has a spirit of divination she is the Bible's version of a soothsayer she's gifted and she is also property the Bible's version of her economic pimp they're using and manipulating our gift for their own personal profit they rendezvous with this girl who has a spirit of divination and by the authority that is in Paul's mouth she is delivered from that spirit of divination which causes the economy of negativity to go in to read but masters can no longer make profit off of her gift and it is at that moment that her masters go meet with the magistrates to have Paul and his man arrested charged and imprisoned and they are given directives by the support of the Masters the magistrates and the multitude to imprison Paul particularly one of his assistants in the person of Silas they imprison Paul and Silas and they were instructed to just throw him in jail but the jailer decided put them in the inner prison by the time we get to verse 24 22 23 and 24 Paul and Silas are bare beaten bloody and bound the strapped to the foundations of the prison in shackles their feet are feathered their bodies of bruised and they are there with the inability to move in a dark dungeon and while they're there they decided to have Church in Chains [Applause] no musician no choir no praise team no sanctuary they just decided that the kind of church we would have had if we was at the temple would work in prison the Bible says they prayed and sang praises unto God and while they were praying and singing praises unto God an earthquake came yeah shook the foundations of the prison the doors were open the foundation was shaken and everyone's bands were loose that's the story I want to back up and share some things out of this text other pertinent to our walk with God and we'll go get some chicken together you already know because you are pastored by a plethora of scholars that nothing in the passage is there by accident and so the language and the scene and setting in the time of the text demands that we begin where it all started at midnight maybe we need to start there cause midnight ladies and gentlemen is a compound word that puts us at the middle of night it's mid night it puts us in the middle of the night but it doesn't just put us at the middle of night it puts us at the beginning of day it's it's midnight it is the middle of night it suggests that when you're in the middle of something it's the beginning of something else it's midnight it's the middle of the night but it's the genesis of a new day it is that time when yesterday dies today is born and tomorrow is conceived it's midnight by the fact that it produces a new day says that it produces a tomorrow it's midnight yes if we put all that data together we cannot overlook something about midnight and that is that something new is getting started in the dark it means it means it means that just because it doesn't look any different that mean is not getting any different so so let's just finalize this whole midnight issue on this one conclusion can we become let's put one conclusion to midnight here here it is here it is Church midnight pastor steward is that measurement of time where a new day begins with yesterday's darkness [Applause] it's somehow suggests ladies and gentlemen that that could be the reason why you're in the dark you're not in the dark because it's over you're in the dark because it's about to start that could be the reason why God has not answered your prayer of bringing you out of what you want him to bring you out because some things are developed in the dark and God does not have to take your preferred atmosphere in order to do something great in your life he is starting your life all over again in the dark that is a word for somebody who's in a dark place in your life you're in the dark because it's a time of development let the church say a time of development God got you in the dark so that he can do work on you away from nosy people [Applause] because you got some people in your life if they ever find out what God is really doing with you they will try to sabotage your name and try to throw a monkey wrench in the work of God so God has to do some things with you so other people won't see midnight is that deliver you because God is looking for faithfulness before he brings you out in the first place and if he never brings you out he's already done enough by sitting his son to die for you so you got to something you don't have no need to exercise faith because faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen [Applause] you just tell your neighbor you'd be worried about your devotion God are worried about your deliverance cause the way he gonna bring you out you can't even pray for it in no way let the church say suddenly I've held y'all too long I apologize my bad QE happens he'll go to jail with me thank God for my tragic friend our funds old January he'll go to jail but dr. Allen's and I can move around the room [Music] and tonight so many of you preachers [Music] have contemplated leaving the ministry because you've been looking for somebody that'll go to jail with you but tonight when they was out in a minute but each year in ministry I recommit myself to the life of ministry I fooled around with some loot to befall [Music] brother some pastors in here have gotten caught up with some loops they were members of our churches they said I'll never leave you I'll walk with you and some of the old folk has here Mora County though [Music] and it had the potential of tripping me up but I had to look up the dog I want the people to see something tonight sometimes pastor Hayden we have to recommit ourselves to the life of ministry and every preacher in here at these 40-plus years I've been doing it I have contemplated leaving ministry because I got caught up with some loops and they hurt me to my heart but God sent me some silence [Music] sometimes and and I thank God for these years that I've been the president of this conference it's been my joy but sometimes we have to recommit ourselves and people need to see us recommit ourselves because so many of us we have a half-hearted commitment and I'm gonna add so Bishop Williams one of the senior members of our conference Bishop Johnny Williams who was technically dead we pray for him every Tuesday his wife was get us word they just left him like laying on the machine he was gone but God [Music] his wife wouldn't let them take my several weeks he just we stopped visiting we say officially gone but God opened up his eyes he's gonna pray for the preacher's brother preacher if you're out there if you're a minister I don't care who you are I don't have time to deal with our isms tonight because I talk to you I get to talk to so many of you tonight we need to recommit ourselves to the life of ministry and preachers ministers you're there I don't care who you are and you're willing to let these people based on what that man preach tonight I'm ready to recommit myself to the life of ministry God has brought me too far and it's done too much for me for me to walk away now I let the loops get but there are some long silences on the way preach of you in here and you're ready and special all of you young preachers you've got to make a strong commitment to minister if you'll hear preachers you all people y'all wait I'm coming to you preachers come to the altar that night whoever you are if you amendments I don't care who you are I don't have time for any ism if you're menaced I know I'm telling y'all I don't have time for any isms if you're in here and you know that God has called you to ministry and you've been wrestling with your commitments while you've been dealing with these lutes God told me to tell y'all there are some old silences headed your way Patterson we can't quit now loops have heard us but the silence is is on our way some reason take this mic and sex unto the Lord a prayer rededication a recommitment for all of us who've been called to the life of ministry before God will hear and answer our prayers brother ins we got to confess our sin we gotta get it right you
