WILD Weather Hits Bondi Beach (Fires, Tsunamis and Hail!)

there's been an earthquake in chile and there's been a heavy tsunami which hit new zealand so it will probably be able to see something so we've got two big storms coming from the south which is coming through waterfall there's red and black in there so it's going to be pretty intense it's just probably a bit of pale in there as well i think we're in for a massive storm [Music] as soon as that suddenly hits you can see you come across the water and then lightning thunda it's like music sometimes not every lifeguard enjoys a storm everyone knows that jules has a phobia of storms no i don't like storms they're not my favorite thing at all i respect them but i don't like them i'm not comfortable with these storms but this storm has another surprise in store one that's got everyone ducking for cover some of the hail stones were honestly like the size of golf balls yeah full on right how gnarly [Music] i hadn't seen hail that big for many years and we're all pretty amazed by it we're getting bigger blue ones over there of course i was a bit concerned about the surface in the water just because of the size of the hailstones you know look at all the surfaces it's the biggest hailstorm to hit sydney in 20 years and some vocals don't want to miss the occasion i've pretty much come down here every day for the last 53 years that's quite unusual yeah we you know get a little bit of hail but not uh not like that normally island one of the great things of bondi is normally beautiful lovely beach but when it's bad it's bad it was a nice sunny day and then boom days change can't see 100 meters the humid weather and cold water have created a dense sea mist look at it now all i could think of was the movie the mist with all the monsters coming out of the mist i thought i was gonna get eaten alive by something water too cold no song you understand me when you're in the car park you can't see any of the ocean so unusual i've never had this we can just see the middle set of flags if lifeguards can't see a person in trouble then they can't rescue them simple run-of-the-mill rescue becomes ten times harder you know [Music] i could just see like this shadow through the mist of like a person in trouble 30 seconds after pulling one man out of troubled waters cliff is straight back in the ocean for a woman who's barely visible from the tower as you can see the fog how heavy it is you must swim between the red and yellow flags but as quickly as it arrived the mist also begins to clear and that makes jethro and berkey very happy me and berkey we're like we're wordsmiths we like to make music the miss brings everything to me hurrah the mist brings everything to me once the mist disappeared there was like a wave of relief came over me and berkey it's a mystery yeah it was good to have a bit of fun [Music] a southerly front has descended on bondi a perfect day at the beach is turning pear-shaped thousands of beach-goers are suddenly desperate to get off the sand and undercover on days like this lifeguards don't have to do a rescue to get wet did you see me [Music] every cloud has a silver lining and bondi becomes a playground for some while thousands have suffered nothing worse than a dredging one unlikely beachgoer has had a much tougher ride at flat rock it is getting stroked out there are we saw it let's pick it up just keep him up there and keep him closer during the downpour the stormwater drain at north bondi delivered this half-drowned feline into the sea the moggi owes its life to 14 year old local hero alex so we've got the rocker called the ranger okay well done lads done really well yeah moji's moved through a bit of an ordeal yeah that's right got yourself a new best mate he was very happy to see you mate yeah may take a seat well done and that cat is absolutely loving even just like another little hug [Applause] diamond started that's a cat local rangers arrive to take the moggie to the vet for a checkup while they try to locate its owner the lifeguards are low there's been an earthquake in chile and there's been a heavy tsunami warning which for us guys no one's informed or notified us about closing our beaches as lifeguards await official confirmation from the tsunami warning center the story goes national the chilean quake sparked tsunami alerts from russia to australia warning messages are not issued lightly it's a very very serious event that's unfolding terry i don't know if you guys have his mate he's on the actual tsunami morning comedian he said it's real tens of thousands are expected on a hot bond by sunday closing the beach is a major decision kerbox calls head lifeguard hoppo what are you thinking it's one of those things that if we say it's nothing's going to happen something does happen and we're in all contests yeah yeah no you're right yeah she's cancelled on such a benign morning a natural disaster seems implausible but lifeguards are reminded of a fateful day 72 years ago on black sunday in 1938 hundreds of swimmers were swept out in a massive surge 35 people were resuscitated five died the giant waves on that day were also experienced up and down the coast scientists have since speculated bondi's worst disaster may have been caused by a tsunami not sure if you're aware that we have been issued with a tsunami warning so the flags are coming down if you could please leave the water find a safer place it's now just after 8am the tsunami is expected at 8 30. is there seriously going to be tsunami or not i don't know but we just have to act with it as well so a possible tsunami yeah a pretty serious earthquake over near chile somewhere chilean yeah it's a long one [Applause] they all turned around when they heard what i was saying so they're probably just having a last swim before armageddon comes i think conditions on bondi could barely appear safer yet the beach is officially closed my achilles are staffed i reckon boxes is worse so i written i'm not going to survive and it gets me i know he's already gone news crews gather to cover what could be an impending natural disaster but it seems to be running late all the latest news for the from the tsunami warning center still saying possibility of dangerous waves strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding throughout the day obviously they can see something they're just trying to track it and see what goes on the waves that hit new zealand were barely noticeable now everyone becomes increasingly blase finally at 5 30 pm head lifeguard hoppo receives breaking news the main tsunami waves have now passed all australian locations tsunami warnings of new south wales are therefore cancelled we're going to put the redneck flags back up and bondi is now back to normal bondi beach as the lifeguards have never seen it before you know there's been a number of weeks now where it's been very hazy in the morning and of an evening and uh there was a few few weeks ago we actually had a really bad day where the visibility was so bad at the beach we had to have pretty much all the glides on a rip just so we can keep an eye on everyone australia is in the grip of the worst bush fires on record this is as bad as it gets a bushfire the size of a small country flames tearing through 25 000 hectares just one third of the way through summer and 29 people have lost their lives two and a half thousand homes have been destroyed a danger that's not going away burning since the middle of the year the fires have earned the name the forever fires yeah it's really smoky down the beach we've had really bad visibility uh it's been really keeping the numbers back people aren't really out there training and it's actually been pretty eerie [Music] as well as being a lifeguard maxi is a professional firefighter you're an hour from the actual action and as you're driving down the freeway trying to get to these little townships you're getting red messages sent saying they're losing multiple houses you try and get there as quick as you can and every second literally counts just over an hour south of sydney maxie's unit was fighting a firefront 60 kilometers wide as it moved towards the town of buxton uh you know a number of houses got lost you know and unfortunately two firefighters passed away um you know it's a real deal and i don't think we're gonna get a breather anytime soon uh they're predicting extreme weather conditions for the next two months right up to there's no rain right until march apparently so there's fires burning everywhere and um you know i'm back on shift again tomorrow and we'll see where i could be i could end up anywhere fighting fires one day keeping swimmers safe the next 28 year old maxie is working on two front lines so even though i know it's a small spot i still go d because you never know you never know
