[Music] tom vassell's top 100 games of all time [Music] [Music] the voice of the people [Music] good afternoon everybody i'm tom vassell i'm mike delecio i'm z garcia and i'm and a final voice of the people is me camilla cleghorn all right so many people have asked i got several things to say before we get started four things to say first of all man number one shot out of a cannon one first of all people have asked why roy would they thought bro was doing his uh top ten but it wasn't they're coming yes the a team is doing their top 100 later this year so keep that in mind that's number one second thing number two shout outs to shout outs we want to say thank you to chase macer thank you the real brandon tidwell the real one that's right yeah yeah there's a lot of impossible right not that one charles mitchell william mcginnis jr alan travelby and caroline and tobias from germany including the pirate roberts too sure why not because yeah travel bee and the dreadfired roberts yep all right i like it thirdly third later today we are this is not the only thing happening today later today we also have um at two o'clock the four of us right this is the four of us right we played kingdom death monster yeah oh it wasn't four it wasn't it was that's four yeah because chris was recording that's right chris took what we said and played and edited it down to like a 25 minute video we're airing that premiere which means you can watch it live and chat with people while you're doing it at two today so we'll come in there and say hi and then at eight o'clock tonight we have our what's it called again parties in the final four hours or three hours or whatever the hours are at the kickstarter oh not that rack sorry i was just getting my beat box going to be clear not rat okay all right um anyway join us for that for silliness and nonsense i bet there has not been a beat box in a rap song in what 25 years goodness yes anyway long time we got that right so we're good wrap party party tonight okay so we have 1200 people watching right now according to their numbers yes if we get to 4 000. which i feel very confident we won't but if we do i will allow someone here to pie me oh probably mike since everyone says i'm mean to him but if we don't get the fourth down i don't like that you know what i'm okay with that i didn't say you no i i i'm in i like that idea of mike being the one to buy you and let me tell you something if it happens you're gonna get wrecked i got a lot of grief last time i didn't hire somebody i had to buy roy and i was too delicate apparently wow and then when it was done to me kenny basically shoved me through a playglass window by doing it you're not allowed to know that you're doing it i'm gonna take his uh lead and i'm gonna propel tom through some type of body slamming this is how we're gonna get the new studio yeah it's gonna be a suplex involved that's all i'm saying i love it all right here you go uh you're not tall enough clearly not empty threat the top 10 games of all time as of 2022 could possibly change i don't think so this is an important list i was telling mike this morning i've actually not put thought usually i try to guess i mean i know the people's yeah all right you didn't put i'm any i'm saying sometimes i try to guess yours i haven't thought much about it in fact there's been a few games that z has mentioned and i thought oh i thought that was in a stop time yeah yeah well let's take a look if there's anything new in here there is one that is new at least it wasn't on last year's or the year before it's a relatively new game but it could have made last year's list and it didn't at all this i was flabbergasted ended up in my top 10. again this list i just ranked things head to head and when it was done it gave me a list and i grabbed it and emailed it to chris didn't touch it barely looked at it i didn't want to know i trusted the math ooh that was your first mistake no math is right and uh this one's surprising yeah so you gave me grief for using the robots he uses the robots and yeah he's you know but the robot works for me you were working for the robot absolutely not three three new games to my top ten really yeah fickleness i know i have three games in my top ten that have not been in there in the past that's what i'm saying i'm saying the same good night brian no no no no i'll get out of my face with this garbage i don't want to say actually not one of them i don't want to say if any of them are brand new we'll get to that but three that are new to my top ten well let's just get started should we you don't want to agree with anticipation oh we want to get this list out before the numbers get too high let's go all right here we go top 10 it gets real everybody my my number 10 is the game is a game that is new to my top 10. it jumped it has the highest jump of any game it went from number 53 last year to number 10. it jumped into my top 10. okay so it's not a 2021 game okay that's it that's all you got that's all you can deduce from that wow okay sherlock good job jeez i'm is going to be similar to uh something happened with you with this very same game it is a crossover with you it also took a massive jump in your list okay okay uh my number 10 is cthulhu death may die i absolutely adore this game and this is a game that gets better for me every time i play it i mean it has a ton of uh you know content out there already um i don't know that i'd need more content if they want to add more it's great but they're between the the core box and the season 2 and the and if you got the kickstarter the stuff that was exclusive to that did you get the characters that came with the comic i did i backed that i backed that too yeah and that's a pretty cool comic too so uh as he mentioned the biggest kind of you know issue with it is that the the tiles are just too small they really are um it does save you on some table space all right well let's do this okay let's do it high for both of you yes and you like evil stuff i do i like this game too then you should play this live sometime this year with the cthulhu we have that thing sitting yeah see i have never played that scenario though so do it that'd be a lot of fun let's do it zoom i painted it let's do it yeah no that's okay because i don't have that i don't have that that's fine and so that would be fun i mean you might have to at certain points be like let's put cthulhu on the floor so people can see what's going on 5 000 viewers all right i will also pie tom ah yeah nothing to do with the who i'm sorry it was misleading timing i apologize no i'm kidding um no he's not if he will actually actually yeah that sounds like a good idea it does sound like it's a good idea and it's a it's a really smart design i mean i love the idea that you're you're taking an episode that may have some unique things to it and a monster and you're kind of shuffling some things together it's a really smart system uh leads to some really really tense nail-biting conclusions it does it does it escalates and escalates and eventually it's a huge big turn yeah yeah so this is a game that just keeps getting better for me it could even go higher i would not be shocked my number 10 cthulhu death may die wow you guys see things in this game i do not yes so yeah out of 10. oh wow all right my number 10 was 18 i think last year it was eight though the year before that so top 20 consistent top 20. and this is um imperial settlers empires of the north empires of the north i it's uh so yeah he said the second time he dropped towards imperial zoars yeah yeah the imperial stellars is for the saying of clarity really empires of the north this one is a nice evolution of the games that came before it and it changes enough to feel like its own thing it now has this action selection wheel thing there in the middle the tableau building feels a little more natural you you gathering resources and keeping them feels natural as opposed to you know some of the other games in this line of this type they go away so you have to that's just mechanically a thing you know it doesn't really make any sense so i enjoy those aspects of it and then all the different factions are just neat you know everybody has their own thing that they're good at they've come out with expansions galore for this thing um it's fun it's vibrant it's uh engaging it's thinky but moves along at a nice clip i do prefer it with fewer but that's true for basically the entire line of these games sure so there is that the empires of the north we tend to say that about 90 of games it's true it really is how many games you say are better with more that's actually not a bad topic there's actually there's actually one game on my top 10 that that's going to be the case but you were right it's usually not like that yeah that was a clue all right my number 10 oh sorry having a boring level my number 10 was 10 last year boring hey consistency that's true actually if your game is 10 last year and it's 10 this year it means it went up slightly because it still beat all the games true and if any other game moved into top 10 that means this one's still pushed ahead of the one okay it doesn't matter that's true all right so my number 10 which was 17 the year before that is vindication whoa still really like vindication look at that man yeah and i wish i could say it's because the game feels like that cover looks it's not it is not it's vindication is a straight up euro game it's a cube pusher maybe um but it is i know but it's so much fun i like the freedom and movement i like every time i play this i'm like i'll do this i'll do this and i don't know i just it plays quickly it really people know what they're doing it really does um yeah i don't know why i like it so much i think it's because i can go anywhere else i try to figure out what makes this euro game it has the cards and that kind of flavor but what makes this one stand out above other euro games that have a nice amount of you know mechanically uh ingrained mechanisms part of it is the theme yeah okay the theme is there and i like that you just like that you're like a lost soul or what is it called what do they call you wretched you're rich there's another word for it but we'll go with red you're like a worthless yeah human husk of a person right and then you eventually aspire to know you remember the word and you're not saying it for some reason it's not the most polite word in the world ah okay you're terrible bleep me roy ready um no um the but also you can do what you want this euro game does not restrict you if i say hey i want to go just fight monsters the whole game which is a euro mechanic yeah i can do that if i want to increase my mount go around it has i don't know it just again i feel this complete freedom it feels more sandboxy than most euros you're right and i think you have as players maybe have a little more agency like the the end game can be really kind of determined by the players i like that a lot you know what i mean so cool yeah cool all right all right all right number 10 for the people is actually the oldest game on their top 10. oh choir no chess no go the ancient game is semi all right it's 2012 at 48 but hasn't been in the top 15 since 2016. oh this is castles of burgundy really it is yes last year's at 12 and this year is back into the top ten that exceedingly tall man has put a spell on the people they love them some felt he is tall he's taller because he's taller than you considerable yeah he's worn my hat though and i never watched it again that's disgusting you get two points i would not be bragging um all right [Laughter] so this in this game you are rolling dice and based on those die roll you use the pips to take different actions or do some tile drafting and fill out your map and i think what really sets it apart is that trying to maximize how you're building your village not a village what is that called kingdom there it is build your kingdom um yeah so you're just trying to maximize your map and through your tile placement and drafting so yeah number 10 castles of burgundy you know i wonder i've i've always thought this game was good it's good yeah six and a half seven a good game i've always wondered why is it so beloved because it is and i i wonder if part of it is that it it's almost like comfort food like it's just like people that know the game it just gives them this kind of feeling of ah warmth and familiarity and they don't have to relearn the rules every time and it's that's true this is breaking news mike compares casual burgundy to comfort food it is it's like biscuits it's like chicken fried steak or does it just give them that that satisfaction of like thinking that they that's it something smart you know like if you oh i have these three dice how can i maximize them the most and so every turn you have that sense of fulfillment you know like i did something yeah they're against the odds positive feedback loops yeah warm bread effect there you go that's a bread effect all right warm bread rising number 10 castle's burgundy [Music] my number nine is also new to my top ten but it is not a new game and it is a game that was definitely on the people's choice and i believe that that would be the only list i'm sure it would never show up on either of your two lists you don't know me like that uh oh i know you like that is it brass no then maybe it is on my list it is not on your list my number nine is spirit island spirit island i might spit on you you're not being with this no i knew you just wouldn't have it in your top 100 i love the idea of spirit island yes so spirit island is a uh asymmetric cooperative game that the rule set itself is not an overwhelming rule set however the decision space is massive and the way that each spirit plays out can add to the complexity it's a complex does not does add to the complexity yes it is a complex cooperative game and to some extent it kind of quote unquote solves the alpha gamer problem because it is so complex you're spending all of your energy on what your spirit can do you don't have time and energy to deal with the other players uh spirits it kind of throws the colonialism theme on its head the idea is that there there are these lands that are out there that are being colonized and you are playing the spirits of the people that are indigenous to those lands and you're trying to basically scare off using fear as a mechanic or mechanism in the game to scare off these uh colonial powers that are trying to impede into your into your land it's a really neat little twist on a very familiar theme the different spirits play very differently there have been multiple expansions um it's a just a really special design and i think it's one that don't spoil your top 100 i know i'm trying not to we're listening i promise they're not listening not even a little bit it's one that that lends yourself to new spirits adding little twists to the system so anyway uh spirit island is a game that i i liked and it's gotten better that's been kind of a kind of a theme here he's trying to make the solo community we'd like to try this again yes you have to go into it just with the here's the exciting thing it could have been the grouping we played it with you it is quite possible yes also this is a game to try this again speaking of what you said this is a game i like to play in smaller player accounts if you play with four and especially if it's people that are new to the game it's going to take a long time yeah i do not like to play three or more if there's any new player i agree like i really like those big player games but everybody has to know what they do know what you're doing right and i really like what you said about sorry not going to overtake your thing i have to put it i love what you said about it fixing that alpha player problem and you cannot alpha play in this game right but it doesn't sacrifice cooperation and you know i think it actually increases cooperation or else you're going to get destroyed that's absolutely right and so i really yeah i think that they just have a really good balance of that that's a i agree 100 number nine spirit island all right my number nine is not spirit island but it is a cooperative game and it is one you you like as well i don't know if it was on your list already or not and find out my number nine is atlantis rise it was yes which is actually does this include your promo oh absolutely it would be my top 100 played as yourself every time every time every time i only play as my own character that's correct if you invite me to play this game with you and you don't have my promo i'm wearing my promo to play there you go i'll pull out my pro but if i'm not wearing my promo pants we're not playing this game together promo pants you should probably think a lot of the way that that whole paragraph was phrased but um no uh this was it was actually a decent drop for this game last year it was two yeah the year before that it was true okay wow this is nine now i don't know why but again i just didn't mess with it still in your top ten uh top ten right uh really enjoyable engaging that's my word beautiful atlantis rising here my favorite part of it is the the pusher luck that this game does that most co-ops don't do this idea of taking a risk for a better reward or a possible better reward that you might not get at all right that that's really interesting and then this second edition of phelp nobody knows the first one anymore or ever did but in this edition every player having their own unique player power that you can that can spill over into other people's followers is a really neat way to you cooperate it's like okay i i get rerolls but if you're with me on a tile you can benefit from that yeah and so i can sort of loan you my power you can you can help me with yours and we we share that so yeah this is a wonderful game tense enjoyable and just stunning looking and has the best promo of all time this is the game that introduced me i think to elf creek and i i got the quote-unquote retail edition and someone told me that there was an addition that was nicer than the one that i had and i'm like are you kidding me i know right like you're like was there leftover upgrade i saw the i saw the deluxe and it was also stunning but man i mean just an incredible production too yeah yeah my number nine was also my number two last year wow again it's just the way it worked out it's not a big deal um although i know that z thinks there's a better game in this genre now because it was already in your top 100 but this is still my favorite of this genre and that's space based oh yeah space based i do like bad company bad company sorry bad company's fun but space base the idea of putting all your cards on one number and then trying to roll that number not trying hoping to roll that number i'm not gonna you're not trying you're not winning though or spreading them out and this game is great the only thing the only problem with this game is there's that one the green cards i always feel like there's so many tables who does not get them i'm like you can add one virtually to the role in your head but you have to put a cube in the card first then you take the cube off and there's always something because it's fast it ramps up quickly i have a great time playing this every time so space space you do love it all right number nine for the people it's a little brother of seven wonders seven wonders duel little brother and nephew like i don't know i guess it's more like a cousin anyway all right it's that cousin you don't speak about right exactly so i'm talking about it oh wait no different cousins right now so yeah so the original is number 16 and then this one is at nine which i thought was interesting that they're both top 20. yeah um yeah so and this is its first year back in the top 10 as well it came out 2016 at 12 the lowest ever was eight in 2017 and it's its first time back in the top 10 since 2017. so 700 dual in this one you are doing um again you're building a civilization and trying to compete build competing wonders um in your in your civilization by drafting cards and building up in your civilization i think what really makes this one sing or sets it apart is the shared tableau in the middle as you're revealing the cards as you uncover them you know and you see more and more that you can draft um so yeah seven wonders dual it's a two player only yeah was this the first to do the two-player drafting that way because that that really is the hook right and i seem to remember i don't remember what it might not be at first both were talking about they came up with it on a plane ride back i think one of them kind of had the aha moment of how to make a two-player drafting work and it's i mean it's brilliant yeah it might be the first one i have i'm only aware of i know one for sure that's in my head but i there might be one more there's not too many i don't know if this was first okay it is cool right that idea of like i'll take a card and if i take it one or two might be revealed and then you have first shot at those right do i want to do that yeah you know does everyone here better than seven wonders i i'm not kind of watching this one better but sometimes i feel like playing seven wonders yeah i mean if i have two people i'm gonna play this for sure but yeah well that's obvious to me of no that there's a there's a variant to play seven wonders with two players which is not even one tenth as good as something so it's possible but not as good okay not worth it [Music] my number eight is a game that holds a tremendous amount of nostalgia for me it's down two spots it's still the game of life firmly entrenched no no you've almost won that game almost i'm getting close to that mansion tom i'm going for the mansion uh a dark turd conversation [Laughter] and we just talked about spirit island right yeah my number eight is blue moon city so blue moon the the the uh two-player head-to-head card game is another one that i'm a big fan of this is in the same kind of universe but the games are no nothing alike other than they have the same artwork and quote-unquote theme blue moon city is a game where you've got tiles out on that make up your your kind of your board and it's the city that you're trying to rebuild they start on the unbuilt side and you are having to contribute resources to build them uh what kind of sets this apart is that it's uh cards that you're playing that are allowing you to move across this map to manipulate these dragons that you can bring onto the board and to contribute those resources but you essentially have to do a little bit of cooperation because it's very unlikely that you're going to be able to contribute all of the resources at a particular time needs so you want to get in there and try to have the majority so that when it does get filled and you flip it over you get the better bonus but other people that contributed to that tile are also going to get a bonus it's not always a winning strategy it's not always interesting if somebody is almost done with something right like they've done there's four four places that need to be done and they've done three you jumping in there barely adding in and putting in one right gets you almost as much reward as they do right and you really saved yourself some cards and some effort that balance yes is very clever you got those players who are yeah the sort of the pioneers right right and the poachers yep you know and the the meeting point between those two and you switching from one to the other right is really interesting in this game it's another timing thing that yeah that kenichi tends to put in a lot of his designs that timing is a huge part of it again this very much feels like a race game to me you know you're trying to get up that obelisk and it's super fast um just a game that i i've never had a bad session of and uh again holds a lot of nostalgia it's one of the earliest hobby games that i played and i was blown away by it especially the card play and i still think it's incredibly clever that's my number eight blue moon city i almost didn't play it at first because you thought it was playing and blue moon is garbage but this game is so much better yeah it's it's a very different game i do wish it looked like the new edition right it was republished right which might be available still i don't know by uh from seamon they don't really look alike anymore and the original one i thought was a sharper looking game i had the original yeah yeah all right my number eight is that game i was talking about being on my list new to my list tom had it on his list top 100 and you quoted a very similar reason than i'm quoting here mine's an even bigger spread because it's higher on my list and i think i came across as liking it less this is marvel united whoa all right wow well you and i both well i was texting you i think a little bit like this i'm really enjoying it yeah yeah yeah i yeah i didn't think i loved it i just keep wow enjoying it and appreciating its simplicity and ease of play more and more yeah this is a smooth and easy game to get to the table it's true and there is it really sort of manages to pull the wool over your eyes where it feels very simple it's a fairly easy teach just a few symbols so you look at the characters and you're like ah they all are kind of the same character and then you play and you play again with slightly different combination of cast you know and it's different and you start to notice these things you know it's it's subtle in a way in some of these things but yeah i just find it captivating it's it's one that keeps me hooked starting this game is so easy i think that's a big part of it would would just the base game be your number eighth game it's hot garbage you should throw that away no i'm asking seriously that's a serious question no no it would not again same reason as tom said earlier when you had it and you have that new that core box you don't really you can't tell that those characters are as different as they are because your your pool is tiny mm-hmm you have three bad guys the locations are fine i think i think the bad guys are too similar to each other in the base game i don't know what it is there's something to it i think the base game is fine yeah um definitely worth the price oh yeah it's cheap it's okay you know but then you get all this extra stuff and and again i don't discourage anyone from getting just the base game get it try it out see if you like you might you might hate it you know uh but then you get all this extra stuff and you start to see nuances and different bad guys that play really differently that will attack you in distinct ways and it opens up yeah i agree yeah and then the combinations of course are tremendous you know it's an insane number add x-men on top of that and that's right gosh maybe i need to try this one again then because i'm really surprised it's that high it's a good wow i really like it that is marvel united look at that way better than horrible champions that was a thought 100 you're thinking looking your look of death are similar all right maybe i'm thinking of death no not you him oh my number eight was 32 last year it's moved up considerably because i love playing this i again i played this at conventions all year round i teach it mike likes it you think it's overrated and i like this game mostly because it's thematically about dwarves that's a lie knit of lyrics oh wow i love knitting number eight you were in a losing situation because we were all like that's amazing we should have just told you it was oh there's this little card game yeah from now on i'm like yeah you might like something though i don't know i still don't think i would have been as blown away for this i thought the different stacks scored too similarly i wanted more of duty i don't care i don't care they score i like trying to be the first one to go into that pile and dig out that card and upgrade the coins that upgrade the coin mechanism brilliantly like that was good yeah i love this game and i'm glad i'm glad it's uh getting a wider release now i tried to get this for daystar essentials the second i played it yeah it's a great one getting buzz for sure that's a really good game a great game nice all right number eight for the people um this is uh just for future note going to be part of mike is wrong if we ever make it to there my goodness oh to be clear we will okay all right because he said that this game is is not as good as dune imperium oh it's not arnac lost arnak wait wait wait do you think arnak is better than i do think i prefer you're wrong i disagree this is good it's just michael you're kind of against yeah a lot of the studios oh really well pretty much the whole studio that's right the people already have dune on there right they did yeah the people like arnold yeah i think people like why you're the voice of the people that's right i think generally speaking the gaming community likes arnac more than doing even i do think i think we're kind of outliers i was wondering if like with the two expansions that have come out so the rise of x and that's going to push dune up higher for people because i think it did for me but then the last rounds are knack just came out with their expansion as well so i think it's really gonna be interesting to see how those two yeah do a lot which i think in ten years people will talk about the two of them in the same world it seems like it is yeah i don't know because again with the dreadnoughts and rise of vixx i think that takes it a little bit more combatty you know and then it goes a little bit more asymmetrical with with lawsuits so i think maybe the two expansions also separate them so i don't think they'll be compared to i'm gonna put this up as a poll at some point yeah although we just did the poll i don't even know i don't need to do that the people have spoken to be clear i mean me yeah to be clear i think arnak is a good game i think i rated it a 7.5 or an eight i mean it's just not as good as dune to me yeah so since law students are knacking this one it's you know work replacement deck building resource management kind of trying to maximize you know what resources do i need to do this so you're planning ahead on your actions one thing that i really like about this game is i know people talk a lot about you have to go in research have to go on the research track and if you have one person going hard on it i do think you have to be in that game but i have won multiple times just by slaying the monsters going heavy into that strategy i've won multiple times multiple times i get it all right okay i don't want to say i've never lost i'll let other people do that for me i agree with mike on this but we're still going to do the microphone actually there is proof on our channel i said i agree with mike on this yeah but i'm still up for that mike it's wrong and i would agree with you basically just on principle you're right our knack is better out all right great i'll take it right all right number eight last runs are neck i don't actually think that [Music] [Laughter] [Music] number seven hey what if i told you that my number seven is a war game what would you say that you are stretching the definition of war game out tremendously maybe but i don't know really what the definition of a war game is a war game is a game uh-huh that has war in it it's not hard then this is a war game this is a two-player game new okay you could play it too but no this is uh this is a game of uh asymmetric animal factions [Applause] a very warlike type of a situation my number seven is root wow oh that's not what i was thinking i thought that landed you that one you're always talking about the tom says is bad he already had that that was yeah that was further back yeah no it's a great game root is better though root is a brilliant brilliant brilliant design i mean it just really is it it has the difficulties that are inherent in a game where you have factions that are very different from each other playing together which is that it can be tough to teach tough to learn but man is the payoff worth it this is so great and we mentioned it before i won't belabor it uh that that if you are interested and you're a little bit intimidated try out the app because it is an incredible way to learn the game but man this game is just fantastic did you know there's an app for root i get i'm scared of the game i bring this i bring this isn't just for you i'm saying for for in general because i've heard a lot of people i've heard a lot of people that are intimidated to get into it and understandably it's it's there's a lot to kind of wrap your head around but man is it worth it and every new faction that they've come out with i think are great and the way that they have come up with kind of this system to determine which factions could work well together depending upon player count because again some factions will work better than others if you're playing a three-player game there are certain factions you just don't even want to include my favorite is a two-player and you both play vagabond that's not a good idea that's a terrible idea as a matter of fact a fantastic game i think it probably is a war game will upset the war gamers out there but at least that's what i've uh i've heard they should not get upset because root is based on the coin game it is literally 100 war games on the coin and if we get to 40 000 viewers we'll play a coin game here live oh my goodness i feel very safe in that way all right well you may be right but uh yeah love root just a special design number seven that's another one all right my number seven was seven last year was 10 the year before that mike already had it on his list i like it even more abyss catalan baby look at that it is actually what bruno catalano looks like yes look at that impressive mysterious cover oh uh this is uh a a souped-up card game it is really a card game and oh there it is uh my favorite thing about this is you know you're you're collecting these underwater critters you are then spending them to hire lords and these lords will in turn give you special abilities let you control locations all of this wrapped around an economy system very light economy system with the pearls want you spend pearls to buy things spend them to make the lords easier to to recruit all these things i said it when you were talking about it my favorite part of this is the idea that everything you do just about is you can do more of it if you want to at the risk of giving your opponents more options on their turns i can keep flipping cards looking for the one i really want and then all the other ones become available to everybody else so sometimes that fine line of knowing when to settle for something is a big part of this game taught this at the retreat had a great time with it always seems to go over well you know yeah it's got a couple of good expansions this is this is a superb hit for me not going anywhere anytime soon abyss my number seven this is another game that really is a card game it is a game it is a card game yeah yeah but uh i just added my playlist did someone just do a big super chat i i feel like i might have missed that one right that's really fast oh my goodness i can't believe the list the number of great games y'all got me into love you all so much thank you very much thank you well great well here's another one this avatar is from the lawn mower man oh wow that's right i applaud you that i'm not necessarily applauding but it's like great great effects in that movie all right number three it's a good short story my number seven was 14 last year but the 10 years before that it was in the top ten okay and what was that um oops what could that be um all right we have an emergency broadcasting system thing going off here yes what uh is it from the computer itself it definitely sounds like it's coming from your area hang on folks yes uh air raid happening here in homestead florida that's not funny uh yeah we're figuring it out folks there's a little yeah it's something you can't hear there's a dive page it's the power thing yeah there's a high pitched beeping coming there okay okay all right i think we're back yeah are we back what happened apologies apologies i'll do anything not to get to 4 000 viewers no come on thanks kenny um yeah we had our battery went out or something there all right but we're back all right all right we yeah we're not sure we were talking about this game that had fallen on my top 10 last year came back in but that's because i knew last year i was i was kind of prepping i was like i know come back up because the second edition came out this year and that's summoner wars yeah oh yeah all right so yeah so last year i hadn't played it as much because i was kind of like i'll wait for the new edition and the new edition is fantastic i mean it's better than the original version but it wasn't that the original version was bad they just improved it okay and i love this game it's a two-player game where you each of a deck of cards your cards are your units they are your spells and they are the things that you spend to put those units and spells out it's fast and it's very asymmetrical and it's really balanced i really like this game fantastic and right now there are as of me saying this i think there are eight factions yeah yeah and then i got another starter set of two and i believe there's more in the way roy right i think so there's more coming i like the dice in this one that they're custom dice instead of the original game just had six sided dice yeah yeah sucker for custom dice you put custom dice in it i already like it half a point more really oh yeah wow i love custom dice what about never mind i suppose they can't stop but can't stop with custom dice is slightly better than can't stop without with the stars you talking about liars dice yes yeah it is slightly better yeah moving over back to uh the people all right save me summer towards my number seven that's it that was 14 up to seven okay number seven for the people is quacks of quedlinburg yeah so this is second year in the top ten was number five last year uh number 23 the year before so got higher it's now kind of staying there in the top 10. um what i really like so this is a bag builder where you are going through and you're trying to build a bag that you're trying to you're pulling from your bag pulling different elements to put in your pot to make the pot not explode right and so it has that push or luck element but also that strategy of adding the right things to your bag so that you know to maximize your odds of pulling the right thing so i think what i really sets this game apart for me is that simultaneous pulling of the bag and just that tension you know so there's not the down time you're all working at the same time and it's that building tension oh they're still going okay well i guess i'll keep going but i'm at six and they're at five and you know so it's just a really really solid tension when everyone's pulling from their bags but then you all have different strategies as you're building your bags as well no i just pull it all out and see what happens okay building your bags ah that's true okay so when you're building your bags you know there's a couple different ways you can go you know do you always put all of your don't you just bust every time if you do that no i try to stop right but early game you can bust that's what everyone does tom i mean i'm so confused i was trying to make some whopping statement just shutting liars dice [Laughter] yeah so i really i i really like this game that i got for me it's that individual strategy on building the bag and then the combined tension as you're pulling from it and that peer pressure too you know well they're still going but i'm in a worse situat you know just really interesting i think that has never affected me in that game peer pressure if you're gonna bust you're gonna buy us numb oh my gosh no my son's little voice keep going you can do it mom you can do it you'll have peer pressure i do i keep going and then i bust every time peer pressure from your young son he is he's strong little-minded man he is [Laughter] all right he played this for the first time this year there's an incredibly intelligent individual there thank you george i agree with all of mike's opinions that's all of them you're gonna make it including the crew there we go that's correct nice nice thank you george yeah i played this for the first time this year i thought it was fine i was i was not blown away i get it though there's something here that this is kind of a castle's a burgundy thing yeah well this one makes more sense when you say yeah because it's it's the pusher luck is is fun and familiar yeah the special powers are this great combination of being really cool and really easy to understand right this is a game that you could teach to many different types of gamers even i'd learned this even you right yeah um anybody can learn this i actually will be shocked if they don't come out with an afternoon oh yeah i think so it's so easy to put in your app too absolutely i agree so number seven for the people quacklenberg [Music] [Music] all right my number six new to the list new game really well let's see the stereo he's the this is the uh did the stereo system cove my number one way is merchants cove am i good or what i i guess agree with this one more than any other game in your top ten this game time is wrong you got to play the other one then the the free radicals if you like this you'll like free radicals i can't see the wheel like free radicals i don't know i really feel like this game is one of those games that's kind of built for me i understand that you don't like it that much that's fine i think this game has don't agree with me mike the the the pacifist i'm coming from i don't know i'm really uncomfortable i'm trying to distract him i'm shaking keys so the idea here is that everyone is playing with their own they're all playing their own into little kind of individual characters and so you might be the alchemist and you've got this little kind of mini potion explosion you're playing you might be the the blacksmith and you're playing a little bit of a dice placement game you might be the oracle and you're playing a little bit of a roll and right type of a thing so everyone has their own general mechanism that runs their merchant but that's all wrapped around this core game of customers who are coming in on boats and you are kind of picking where the customers go which of the four peers they're going to end up to because you need to sell the goods that you're creating with each of these mechanisms that are in the game i like the fact that it is asymmetrical but not overwhelmingly you know unlike root i could teach merchants cove too i think most gamers relatively quickly the the the core game is one that i find compelling i know that that's probably your biggest beef with is that you don't care about that that boat part i really don't i do i have to yeah that's what i'm saying because i don't because he doesn't he doesn't like it why should i play the rest of the game i do like it i think it's got just a nice little mix of some uncertainty as far as like what customers are coming out of the bag but you have some agency in when you're placing them um so there's that i like kind of the sometimes decisions are not as obvious as they might appear like you think oh i'm gonna sell every good i've got well not necessarily i might not be your best bet so but it only plays over three rounds so you've got to keep that in mind anyway i really like merchant's cove a lot i think it's a very clever design i think it's something that had a very real possibility of exploding because it's hard to pull off a game like this and feel balanced and i it feels very balanced yeah you mean i am quoting yeah it means like exploding it sounds like it gets popular no i meant imploding you're right thank you yeah you know i felt like there was a chance that that it just wouldn't work it works it works very well my number six merchant's cove tom just corrected your word usage my mind is about embarrassing now listen listen i actually i i get my i don't actually even hate the game it's fine um but i think you might like free radicals for that same reason but maybe you won't like the base game as much that's that would be interesting yeah i'll definitely look but very similar it's this new wiz kids game it's got another asymmetrical type of thing except this one has 10 different ones all right but no dragons there are and it's not as pretty okay well sure my number six is a crossover with the people on this very top 10. wait what do people say oh i know what it is you know nothing okay i think i know it's one we've already had from the people seven wonders duel yes so i did know something you're not the one who said anything you told me to shut up well and i cannot confirm or deny that you didn't know it seven wonders do i like it better than seven wonders i had seven wonders on here somewhere a while ago seven wonders duel is my favorite from this whole line now with architects too and yeah it's just the drafting certainly is very clever i like the the fact that the game includes alternate ways of winning it's a very catala thing you know this idea of this game at the end of eight rounds you score whoever has the most points wins or if somebody gets to 15 of this thing they just lose or whatever you know he does that a lot nagaraja's got that you know he's got a lot of his games there is a way you can shoot the moon or something that can go around the normal standard rules end the game early in a win or a loss for you whatever and this one's got two of those things right where you can go for the military track if you push that enough you just overwhelm your opponent's military and you win doesn't matter how you were doing in points and then the the sciencey thing yeah um i like the way that the science was handled in this game sort of inspired by seven wonders but it's really its own unique system it's a very different mechanism yeah i don't know i mean it's just obviously people love it too it's just an absolutely stunning two-player game expansions i really like i i think both are excellent expansions uh not a whole lot else i can say here i got some metal coins in mind too when i oh i love metalcore do you have the do you have the metal uh military token you know i do all right i was about to give you just all kinds of things where you thought it was your position you thought i was a poet let's be honest i really did yeah all right my number six was six last year um this is the fifth year that's on the list and i just played it on s monday of this week would it still be this would you drop it like no no no no that's gloomhaven i'm playing i'm playing it on the app now and i will say not and this includes cool maven jaws of the lion too which i really like sure okay i i don't know that i'm gonna play the board game anymore they're basically no longer your six no but i mean i'd just rather play it as the app the app is fantastic so that was one of our stretch goals for this kickstarter we're playing it live so we've already recorded a couple of those sessions we're going to be recording quite a few of them before they go up on our channel but man i forgot much i like this game the idea of taking two cards i mean the characters in gloomhaven are the most asymmetrical characters in dungeon crawl in existence i don't think anyone i mean the other one chronicles the drunk or tried yeah they're very different but man every character in gloom even has two different decks and they're every card in those decks is different right you know and they also feel different than generic fantasy which i always complain about yeah that's true like one of the characters we're playing right now the crag heart he's this rock guy looks like rod calls him the thing clapping but he's strong but he also throws rocks at people causing areas so he's like a ranged tank thing that doesn't exist in d d really right oh i love it great game cool maven well the people agree with tom because their number six is gloom hazel that's two if i was sitting over there we would do a fist bump in front of disease yes i mean there's not really much else to say let's see what it came out here so it has been four four and now it's down to six so it has dropped a little bit but it's been top ten for four years now well that's because gourmet the line was also on the list yeah but only to lose two slots you know to only go from four to six with another game coming out i think that's really easy it'll be very interesting to see what frost does to all of this there's another one another one do we know when frost even is coming out 2075. have you played goo maven i have oh i don't know i play jaws of the lion i've not played i have no idea yeah right so i played draws the lion though and i really sets it apart for me is i like the puzzle of it you have you know the two the top and the bottom actions of your card and you get to choose one each round so you have to figure out what cards you're going to play because sometimes they're one-time plays sometimes they stay out forever and so you're always conscientious of how big your deck is and you're resting and are you into the top this top with this bottom or this bottom with this top or wait no next round that'll be better because then i'll be up here so it's a movement it's just a puzzle the whole time and i think the very first time i played this i made the comparison is like it reminds me of spirit island where you're just i mean not not in game actually i i definitely see that that competitor the card play the puzzles the thinking multiple rounds ahead so i'm really really enjoying it yeah i'm not quite to the middle maybe like a third of the way through the jaws of the lion and i'm really i want to take the character and stick it in the video game i want to hatch it yeah that's and i would win and she would definitely beat me up so that's true just not with a hatchet probably so number six for the people and tom gloomhaven [Music] number five is a terrific euro game it is one of the most interactive euro games i've ever played um you know you and i and actually the three of us i don't know if you've played it have talked about fallout shelter the the game that that cute little game yeah and it's a good little game yeah but to me my number five is really fallout shelter the board game my number five is outlive uh this game i just taught this again actually i don't know if i taught it i played it at the uh retreat i played it with people that knew it um and it was the best session of this game i had played yet i was struggling to upgrade this game good because it's such a great game so the idea in outlive is much like if you're familiar with fallout shelter is that everyone has their own shelter right and you have rooms that you're going to be building that are going to give you some ability some powers but you have to first build those rooms and then you have to populate them with survivors but every survivor that you have in there is going to need food they're going to need water they're going to need to to be you know sustained also there's radiation that you have to deal with in your airlock and you're doing this by placing workers that all have different strengths all right and you're placing them on one of the that central border that has a different location some of them are going to be to gather resources other times they're going to be rummaging through the city the city to try to find things you might be hunting animals for meat however that's fresh meat that has to be used that round because it won't carry over you can get canned meat that you can use whenever so really neat little uh thematic touches that lead to a very tense very interactive game because if you go with a with a worker that has a five strength and there's somebody there that has a three strength you basically can intimidate them and say give me something give me some of your resources unless they've got ammunition but they can fight you off basically so it's very kind of in your face there's not a lot of spots on that board so there's a lot of interaction the way you move your workers is very clever uh just a terrific game that um really for for a long time you can get it super cheap it was like 30 bucks and it's a it's a good product the retail this is one of the rare examples where the retail is probably better than the deluxe in a lot of ways other than it doesn't have the two dual layers here's the thing the retail is not better except in the one thing they have these little plastic guys that you can't really tell apart right um i've got a frankenstein copy i've got that that's what i want yeah i was just telling come on i want to upgrade this game i can't find the pieces i need little bullets yeah yeah this is a failure on my part yeah but then i thought is it really that popular no it's on mike's list yeah still wondering it just became that popular well it was it was it was definitely played at the last retreat i can tell you that and it was a great session of it so just a fantastic game if you have not played it and it sounds even a little bit interesting to you give it a shot because i've never had anybody not like it will you teach it oh absolutely all right yeah i'd love to okay all right my number five is another brutal catalan game you might be my favorite game designer guys one of these days where i do one of these and i'll be like and here he is that'd be cool because it gets too emotional no i don't think so i i know him already so uh all right my yeah so five he's a co-designer in this one actually and that is jamaica it's my number five which i actually shot up a decent amount it was 22 last year twenty the year before that you played and ended up with five you played this multiple times this year i did i did yeah sure that helped i imagine this is a racing game in which you're all pirates uh doing a loop around jamaica and along the way you'll be picking up treasure you will be firing your cannons at other fools trying to get near your ship they were warned they still did it so you got to steal their stuff that's right you will be uh drawing cards that's the treasure that has either a special ability or is just secret treasure some of them are cursed and you can maybe pawn those off on people winning the race itself is certainly important you've got a lot of points just for coming in first but you can also make up some serious points by just hoarding gold and i love to do that i love being coming in just a little bit behind the the leading player but my cargo holds are just loaded they're weighed down with gold of course you're a rich target at that point you better be able to defend yourself yeah this is really fun i i really like the expansion too i think it's a fantastic expansion tom loves it too tom thought it was the best expansion ever i think you said i really ate that expansion yeah yeah um i like the game not as much as z but not even called you at the retreat right at the miami retreat yeah nope orlando is that with my jamaican coins right i'm very happy it was yeah yeah cause i was actually making money in the game i don't know if it was my mother my copy of the game don't you bring your cops to my retreat oh wait you played the game with cardboard money yeah you didn't play the game oh i'm so sorry you didn't play you need to replay it would not have been number five don't log in don't do it don't log that in boardgamegeek my number five showed up uh four three years ago it was my number one and it kind of came out of nowhere for it but now i think there's some more popularity for this game and not not just me anymore and that's project elite the seamon reprint of this definitely helped i mean because there wasn't a whole lot of copies around before that yeah this is that kind of game that i really i have the same experience almost every time when i teach it i start teaching it and people are very wary of everything in the game because they hear it's timed they it seems a little bit overwhelming especially i'm like here's all the bad guys i'm not done yet hang on here comes more bad guys and then you play the first round and then what it's the second round every time after that second round when they you killed like 20 of the bad guys you're like right oh yeah let's do this to the point of a lot of times when i play it or i'm teaching it we do one round and then we restart the game because they always want like okay now i know what i'm doing hold on let's go back you know so that way you can't pull the trigger you can and i do okay so all right everyone like almost every time because because they really like oh i get it now that's how i'm sorry i'm taking your thing go ahead no girl i really like this game too this is a really good game it's just fun because everyone it's yeah this is the one game i think that completely solves that um because i don't have time beforehand we're like you do this you do this you do this so everyone's talking and then when we're playing i look up i'm like you just killed 20 guys right i didn't know you were doing that it feels so good like when you get you're like gone gone yeah you know like it just feels so good and that one really as much as i dislike real time elements which i generally do kind of work towards it's also it's in bursts in this game yeah it's just two minutes two then it's like all right everyone hang on right and everyone sits back down do you do that every have you ever finished a round sitting down i have not we all end up standing up we all sit down i can reach across the table though so i i just like to be in the action she's on the team [Laughter] other tables yeah all right well maybe i'm the reason that no one ever finishes around standing or sitting down can we start again somewhere else project delete my number five wasn't this your number one that's what i said yeah it came on at number one still pretty close to five yeah this was number one when 20 22 21 20 19. okay okay okay okay no here was your number one recently not that long ago yeah it dropped to 10 the following year then went back up to four when the seamon version came out now it's at five oh really yeah oh okay all right number five for the people uh was that number six last year so it's kind of being steady right there and it's only a third year um out so it's a newer game it's about it has a anti-anthropomorphic civilization i guess where you're kind of building your tableau do you know aberdour everdell oh yes it is um i think what really sets this one apart is the dynamic nature of of your town i guess that you're making there you know because you have the individual characters that's your that you're drafting and playing into your tableau which is only 15 cards total and they each can have their that they have their individual powers which you can play off each other so a little bit of that tableau building with a little bit of engine building sometimes if you can put them together in the right order and have them have a trigger off each other but at the same time it's dynamic you know because somebody else might have something in theirs that you can play off of you know if it's one of those open cards um or you might have one that you remove somebody from you or you can play it it doesn't count so again kind of through the game it's constantly building constantly changing and it just feels really dynamic and i think to me that's what sets everdel apart and it's freaking adorable yes you tuck cars i i didn't mention with that quote on the back of the box yeah yeah freaking adorable this was on my list and i think yours as well new people because you can kind of see it click in their head you tell them look you can't build more than 15 cars in your city and then you kind of tell them how it works they're like i have two workers to place right i'm never going to be able to get eight cards much less 15 and then by the end of the game they're stressed because they have more cards to play than they have room for yes it's a game that really that that timing asks you hey mike stressing the people he teaches i do it i like to sabotage the people i play it's a little wingspan-esque in in which sense in the whole tableau building things re-triggering sometimes yeah that feeling of like you know it tricks you with how long you think it's going to take right or space that it's going to occupy versus what it ends up being right you know i think they they they sort of fire the same parts of the brain i think i can see that i can see that it's a good one awesome so number five for the people is everdell my number four is the game on my list that i was mentioning that i prefer at higher player accounts i actually prefer this at the maximum player count of five it is a game that goes against everything that i think i like about board games it is a game that is it's fun it's it's an economic board game it's a game that um sorry the the player screens are literally the multiplication tables that's your players that's your number five thank you no it's my number four mike everything mike says is good and right and holy yeah my number four is smartphone inc boy this game is such a fantastic design i love to teach this game to new players i love to teach this game because it is so easy to teach and it's really realize what you think it's going to be i've mentioned this many times before i only played this for the first time as a favor to a friend who wanted to play it with five and only had four and he's like please do me it wasn't before i worked here he's like would you please do me a favor and play this game i really want to play it at five i looked at it and i was like i could not be less interested in this game the way it looked the player screens i'm like this is going to be miserable i'll do it to try to be a good friend two rounds in i was like how do i get this game and at that time it was almost impossible and you took his copy and no longer no but what i did do and i've mentioned this before too but i'll mention it again what i did do and this was before it was widely available is i went on to board game geek oh don't say it and i wrote a geek mail to every person that had it listed as owned that's what i did i said if you ever would be willing to sell this game i hate when people do that mike i know and it's the only time i've ever done it how excited he was i was super excited did you get one i did and i paid a pretty penny for it but um but man i absolutely adore this game and it's since come out with expansions that have made it more viable in a lower player account my favorite way to play the game is still baseboard with five players such a great game did you email me and ask me oh my god i probably wouldn't have emailed you i probably wouldn't sir slash madam actually i i i'll be honest i have a feeling i probably have this before you did in your face i probably did how does that feel this was i got one of the copies they sold at essen that were it was addison you didn't like it you didn't play it you didn't know it it's tower essential now it is it wasn't at the time yeah i saw that but he opened the door in essence i introduced this game to tom vassell i know this is a vote no you know i i would not i wouldn't have emailed you uh or geek mailed you i geek mailed everybody else uh but uh yeah man this is such a great game such a great game smartphone inc uh right like three more people for pie three more people for three more people two more people for pie what and then you get pies rex four more people just do your next one all right here we go all right my number four i don't wanna be called a shill my number four has been my four last both times okay still my four which is unfortunate that'd be really great if it was five fortunate because it's five tribes okay i thought this was gonna be your number five because this is another catalan game yeah well there you go there's been um i'm not kidding there has been and and i'll be honest it's the last one this is my favorite guitar game abyss seven wonders dual jamaica five tribes there's four of his games in my top 10. um no one here is that bad i can tell you that yeah if i had if i had four games in my top 10 by the same designer tom would have me hanging from the ceiling by my feet not but that is very much a testament to him as a designer i agree right [Music] 4 000. buckle up buttercup 52. oh yeah you're gonna get so five you're doing it now or at the end right now no i gotta do it at the end right it's gonna it will be gonna make another number to get the next pie yeah roy has a point okay anyway five tribes is a great game it's already been on the people's choice was it on your list it was on my list yeah so it's been talked about i know that folks out there have a problem with the analysis paralysis in the game this idea of knows too many choices here's the thing i always say at the beginning of the game there's a lot of choices but also they're all about the same number of points okay at the end of the game some moves are fantastic some moves are not so good but you have fewer to consider it evens out just don't worry about it yeah yeah you know everything's about 12 points that's fine and then later in the game if you have a turn where you make 18 that's a pretty good turn i'm selling a video with all my tips and tricks for five times in two easy payments of seven thousand dollars each wow but before we do that you should is kenny not here oh these are so sweet here's a nail you can thank you what is wrong with you she just always has a nail on her at all times you never know when you're going to need a nail like right now kind of that no i'll use my okay here we go all right here we go here we go oh light them up light them off i feel like i mean remember that old movie what was that movie with the tom cruise cocktail movie what does that call cocktails was it just called cocktail i'm pretty sure that's right i'm gonna take the mic off if you're okay with that all right here we go microphone oh boy oh that's delicious oh oh my goodness oh yeah you know it's oh thanks oh that's delicious all right all right we're sure we're doing this are we doing this how am i what am i doing here right i should get out of here i'm taking the hat okay i'm going to fix it i'm getting out of jumping roy's going to get a nice close-up here so go ahead all right i'm coming to this side as well here we go oh for the people all right we're ready 4 000 viewers baby are we good hey here we go here we go everyone three two oh that's a shame you got the pie it's stuck you got the sugar all right there we go look at that that's a good one a lot to me in my life that's a good look right there yeah you gotta leave that you gotta yeah you gotta just rock that for a you look like a like a yeti look at them all right holly take the pie thing put that in the put that in the microwave no no not the microwave in the oven kenny's going to repurpose that somehow that's going to last for another three years kenny is here that's why there was an airport did we have an air horn i didn't hear it yeah kenny always had the airport i did not hear the arrow i was very focused the airhorn is like z's promo it's just in his pocket at all times there we go how about five camilla doing it at 4500. oh yeah there you go i'm gonna keep this up we're gonna find canelo no no i pie tom i get to do the pie right that's what you meant yes that's okay all right whoo you look great thank you five tribes it's your turn mine the four is creamy this is hard to say with a straight face now my number four was number eight last year and proves that mike is wrong what flash in the pan oh this is a definite flash in the pan the crew however very clearly and i didn't i didn't differentiate to chris it's not the quest for planet nine but it is deep steep you don't even know the name of the game and it's your number four it's called the crew mike i guess i had too many kids every time i do this i think it's like spit up from a baby i don't know why isn't that same feeling that's disgusting it is but i was used to it um anyhow thank you nate by the way for the suggestions uh we're glad we're thankful for the super chat okay thank you so the crew a trick taking cooperative got out of my eye a trick taking cooperative game it's really good and and and i i say deep space nine oh i mean the deepsea mission over the the deep space one i'm about to drink no i knew what you're talking about do you you have no idea you like that second one because it's slightly better than the first one next generation it's a lot better but they're so similar that you wouldn't all right i'll put it no it's just getting on the table oh you don't have to see what god's saying i got on that table that sounds worse than it was um see i told you dude at the end no one listens to me why start that okay no cooperative trick taking game and and the new one is so much better than you know when i won't teach you because the new one is kind of like it almost it's like swallowed the old one because some of the aspects of the one are in the new one they play the same way i just don't see why you would own both honestly yeah that's probably true mad man i do own both but still right i love that i was insinuating you look like a madman awesome oh i should put my hat back on oh oh ye i have extra hats um are you gonna wash it now what did i say earlier [Applause] oh my goodness anyway the crew's a great game and i ruined my own segment but you all know true because the people agreed and most people like it i like it too it's not that much and i think the crew will still be talked about in a decade from now not a chance when you're talking about where were they where are they now maybe yeah all right let me let me let me cleanse that way the people here all right all right number four for the people the highest it's ever been is number three okay all right it stayed pretty consistently there but coming down from number eight is viticulture oh this is the crossover with both mike and tom right yeah um good choice people yeah so in this one i think what sets this one apart specifically is so you have your worker placement again and you have special cards that you can get you know so you're mitigating some of your actions with those cards but i think what really sets this game apart is with the worker placement aspect there's the different seasons that you play in and so it's really finding that balance of where am i sending my worker through the thing um where am i gonna send my worker this season to set up for next season to set up for next season and and so it just makes for some really interesting decisions but like i said you also might have the special power card not power cards those special action cards that can help you mitigate that a little bit you know to give you that advantage and so you also kind of always feel like you have a little bit of advantage um admittedly those cards can't be really swingy but from what i understand they fixed that kind of if you think they need okay all right i mean you can yeah if you're really worried about like ultra balanced then maybe yes switch out those visitors but i don't think it matters that much myself yeah but really just that that action or the worker placement through the different seasons what's available and making sure that you're set up for the next season you know with maximum efficiency yeah is really what sets this one apart yeah i agree with you though that it's i don't even have the original board anymore yeah i got i kept the tuscany board with the four seasons and was able to condense viticulture and tuscany the parts i wanted there's a lot of testing it's tricky it's really packed but yeah it didn't even keep the original board i just like the second one more yeah but either way really great all right so number four for the people viticulture [Laughter] [Music] all right my number three is a crossover with the people i believe and i think also with tom uh my number three is a really soldier huh ready culture no i already had video control from today uh no from earlier earlier lists this is a worker placement game with a viking theme this is raiders of the north sea now i do want to put this out there and you know if if i catch grief for having a yes okay all right so uh raiders of north c and to be number three quite honestly the base game is great but for number three it's with the expansions because that to me is like the real experience of the game is playing with those expansions and and kind of getting that that full that full experience the base game is great uh if you're teaching it to new players it has tom mentioned before when he was talking about it kind of a little twist on worker placement where you are going to be placing a worker and taking that action and removing a worker from somewhere else on the board and taking that action doesn't seem like it's that big of a deal but it's a really nice uh extra layer of decision making on top of the traditional worker placement you have you know all of those things that you might expect where you're fighting over the same spots they have raids where you're trying to be the first to go out you you basically there's a progression the first part of the game you're building up you're getting your crew together you're getting your provisions together you're getting prepared to go out on these raids and then when you go on your raids that's where you're getting the really good stuff the gold the the new workers that allow you to go to different places it's a beautiful looking game a very easy to teach game and it is really never failed to to go over well when i've taught it raiders on north sea it just keeps staying i keep thinking it's going to drop and it hasn't yet maybe it will it hasn't yet all right well i'm glad it's a good game all right my number three not a guitar game no no uh only only with katala would that be the case bruno mars oh technically no i had citadels too many bruno's yeah yeah um we don't talk this is uh i don't know any other brutal top of my head so i'm gonna let that one go pandemic iberia is my number three and yes this is the only pandemic on the left let's ask the question i know i can feel it coming from your pie infested face pandemic iberia i'm just picking you know if i'm gonna go fully core box i i think this is my favorite of just the core boxes yes pandemic the original has a lot of expansions and they are great and you can mix and match to your heart's content but if i'm going to recommend just one i like this one i like what it does i think it has a really good balance between being in a neat setting in a in a cool part of the world having a good mix of short-term gains or necessities sometimes you have to put out you know fires and long-term strategies building railroads worrying about leaving water behind you know to purify water to deal with possible explosions of of infection yeah so i like that i like that sort of idea of you know setting in and forgetting it for a while while you go do something else um it's a cooperative game like all the other ones you're trying to discover you're not really i mean you're not eradicating or anything like that i think you're just really treating because i don't think that cures quite yet yeah but it doesn't matter it's a thematic thing another thing i really like about this one is there's two little expansions in the box they're optional you can choose to put them in but they're neat and they they work very well you can one of them is going to give one of the colors or two if you really want a difficult game or three or four that's outrageous oh come on yeah that's ridiculous but it'll give one of those four colors a different way to behave and the other one which is wholly unique to this scenario to this box this this game has this concept in which after you build a hospital people start migrating to it and so at the end of every round someone gets one step closer to to that hospital and eventually you might have an outbreak at the hospital and everybody evacuates and then they slowly start coming in again so just building a hospital early to have it is not always a good idea right because you then have to defend it right i really like that concept it does make the game much harder but it's got interesting repercussions that you wouldn't expect until you see it happen you know you sometimes it can be a good thing there might be a stack of three and one of them leaves to come closer to the hospital so you're like woof okay i don't have to worry about that for a moment you know but um yeah like i like the way all those parts work not necessarily together all the time but very clever great game definitely give it a try if you haven't played any pandemic whatsoever i would say original or iberia is a great selection for that my number three do we have this one in the library we do and i was just about to say chris stick this on the ketchup palooza list because this is the one well i think there's three i haven't played but yeah i played this one i've played this okay or the one i don't care about the rising tides i don't care if i play rising ties these two i i will admit fall of rome is more interesting than me theme wise but this one is also interesting to me because i like it more different from the game that's just about spain just so you know it's also in portugal it's a fantastic euro game that one of the reasons i like playing as much as i like teaching it to people but i will not play with more than three oh um i thought this would be higher me too and it is lahav uh this was number one last year no it's not nice number one last year it was number one the year before that and it's been on my top ten for the most part you had to make wrong room didn't you yeah you want to have that cake it's difficult because i like this style game i like any euro game that gives me so many options in my turn i'm like i'll pick this good one and that's what the hob does i've talked about this game ad nauseum um [Laughter] so i won't i won't do it more but i again this is one that i will pretty much play almost any time i at the retreat this year i taught two games simultaneously and this is my one uh conceit in the library where there's two types of la have it is not that popular right right but i put two copies in because i like it and i taught two at the same time so it mattered i wonder for how many people this is their favorite juve rosenberg game it is so i think there's a lot of people that it's agricola mm-hmm and la hop i think the and feast rodent those are the three maybe cat verna but those are the those are the four right and then you have the outliers who someone will say uh what's the one about pete uh the two player one oh i like yeah i like uh arl not that one um that one's got pete nobody knows what pete is pete and repeat once in the pond okay never mind i played that one with you but you know what i haven't played the harbor oh you've noticed what it's actually called stop i've never played this wow i've never played i've asked you time and time again tom please teach me lahar okay but first of all that that whole section was a lie no i'm being truthful about the part that you haven't played yes no the rest was based on the line all right chris add this to the catch of palooza too then that's a long list i didn't say i wanted to play it you literally just said it all right fine i want to play this i do because it's been your number one for a long time now that you finally don't really like it that much right right okay because number three now is the time when i want to jump in yeah all right number three for the people is a game i have not played um but everyone keeps telling me i need to number we'll let you know all right number three is side that's two and you need to put two stone games in the top five and this has been in the top three since 2017. yes one one three three um so yes like i said i haven't played this one so i actually asked some people online what they thought set it apart because i had no idea and after reading what they said i do think that i need to play this one what i saw that threat and i was like what a who wrote that i was like well it's camilla never mind that's why you don't ask permission what kind of question is sorry an excellent question yes so david said it's really atmospheric which that totally sold me i was like yes you know those euro mechanisms with the with a lot of themes and you can imagine the story behind each card play so i'm already in with that you know i love that you can see the theme come through and the game kind of makes sense based on it um but then also the streamlined engine building wrapped around an area control you know so again two other mechanisms i'm coming to find i didn't think that i liked area control but um there's so many different ways to approach it right exactly exactly so yeah so just and then the last one here is nick is satisfied satisfaction of planning out your bottom actions just right yeah which kind of makes me think of you know some other games we've talked about you know where you're trying to maximize those actions and when they trigger so so yeah number three for the people is scythe someone who wrote trash in the pan it's 2017. they're five years old now and i also saw some people in the comments were like annoyed that look so meyer's recent games have not nearly been as hot right for sure rising and pendulum did not do that well no but he is was whatever his game's extremely he has that tapestry was in the top 100 viticulture and outside may not be done yet let's see yeah and wingspan even though it's not his design it's a stone meyer game yeah yeah right [Music] i said i i wasn't you know guessing your top ones okay but i now know what your top two are yeah of course right but i don't know which one's where that's that's the thing right there's the rub i don't know that's not that exciting the people you can feel the you can feel the anticipation in the air my number two is what i like to call a modern classic no it is not a modern classic my number two is uh proof positive that the people are brilliant my number two is scythe oh never mind i thought this was your number one yeah well uh it had been for a number of years it was super quiet when you were talking yeah that had been my number one for a number of years and it's uh it's no fault of side that it's now two instead of one uh it is a game that uh i really feel like it was the beginning of what i kind of realized solidified my tastes in games and it's what i think of as a hybrid game where it's got as you mentioned the the area control it has combat but that combat oftentimes is more of a threat than a reality the fact that combat can exist really can inform your play but it's not the be-all and end-all it's really more of a efficiency puzzle where you are trying as they also said you're trying to coordinate your top row actions with your bottom row actions and you're doing it in an asymmetrical fashion fashion where every faction plays slightly differently depending upon how your boards come out they play differently depending upon which mechs you unlock in which order can can impact it but it's really all about kind of getting to those objectives which is another thing that i found that i like in gaming i love games where your end goal is based on objectives objectives that you know about sometimes at the beginning of games sometimes i like it when you reveal objectives throughout the game and there are different aspects of side that you can put in with expansions where that might be the case so um cyto is a game that i have loved for many many years i continue to adore it i continue to love playing it with people that have played it before that have never played it before i love the expansions well most of them the invaders from afar is good fenris is great wind gamut not necessary uh that's the player it looks so much cooler than it is it's fine the funny thing is my favorite part of that uh expansion is not the airships it's the alternate uh it's the wind conditions that's true so anyway uh the airships are fine but like tom said they seem much cooler than they really are they're just another way to move stuff around but great game scythe and the aesthetic i think is incredible too the world building all that stuff [Music] my number two uh has been in my top ten for a while i it's the i still like it more than you know we both put um cthulhu deathmate die in our lists i still like this better okay that's the others yeah i see like the others is my number two this is an all one versus many game in which one player is playing some sort of sin personified in beasties and creatures the other players are playing part of an elite team some sort of neo punk sci-fi vibe and they are trying to you know squash this evil thing you're gonna be moving around different districts you're going to be taking actions at those and you're going to be attacking definitely your opponents cleansing areas of evil influence all that stuff there's the visual appeal of this of course all the minis all the cool you know graphic design all of that stuff but my favorite thing about it is that much like psy for you was kind of a hybrid between things right this is kind of a hybrid for me i like a lot of miniature heavy games not manager games but games with miniatures i like a lot of them more in concept than in game play right and this mixes many of those things with a an efficiency game you know it's a game that requires you to be efficient it's a game that strips a lot of what i find is unnecessary and bloated in miniatures games and so you can get this in in and out in 90 minutes two hours every turn is very clear and cleanly laid out there's not a lot of things to trip you up you know no point am i having a a timing issue or a oh can i get there from here kind of problem or what's the line of sight oh no i hate that stuff this gets rid of all those things i don't like keeps the dark theme which i love and just lets me have fun so and go all out both sides can really go at it and you have a balance game so the others i love it i want more sins that's it that's it that's a good question yeah one more back of the box and then you meet you said oh wait never going to happen yeah yeah but even out of the context of the game that's probably worth it all right my number two started the list at number two what's it now still number two what's it gonna be next year i don't know about next year i love this game fantastic negotiation game we played it here on the channel many times cosmic encounters [Music] [Applause] it was three last year went up one spot well that's a big deal it was two the year before that and then two two one one one one one one one one yeah exactly right all right this game's fun uh it has so many things in it i shouldn't like about games sometimes sometimes when people are cheeky they try to explain to me how this influx and or oops sorry something people explained to me that this influx and uh munchkin have a lot of similarities i don't i can't logically argue with them but they're wrong yeah but but logically maybe you can be correct but there's just the magic of cosmic counter it's a soup it's the coca-cola magical mix i'm sorry the kfc 11 herbs and spices i don't know what it is it just works and it's so much fun i have fun every time i play it except that one time maybe a little maybe a little group dependent wouldn't you think though yeah but yeah that's what i'm saying when you've got the right group though man this game does something normal i i i will live in that game up by sheer force that's true but i will liven the game up and if i can't do it then it's on those people yeah that's true except that game at one in the morning but i just you don't shouldn't play games at one and really had a convention was it yeah i was about to go to bed so i was like hey you want to play a game and it wasn't their fault but we played with there was a weird combo powers where someone was almost about to win and then someone was able to like blow up a planet and we went back and i was like i just want to finish the game speaking of gaming at 1 in the morning check out the new stretch goal that was revealed in the dice tower kickstarter yes cosmic encounter 1am it's redemption awesome number two for the people is the other game in the list or the not pull i guess the facebook post that i made uh terraforming mars so another game i have not played and had to go to the people for staying power on the scene it's amazing it has been number two for the last three years so it's been two two two and is two again terraforming mars um so so bob was saying that he really likes computer based sims and this game really nails that for him that he kind of gives him that i believe it was valgallo yeah that sounds like something he just does yeah so i thought that was a really interesting comic so i'd never what i know the game didn't see it like that um and then simona said something that i mentioned earlier that she feels accomplished every time you feel accomplished in this game even if you don't win you know so as you're going through and you're building you're contributing to triggering that end game um you're competitively triggering the end game you know you're all working together for it but not in a cooperative it's not cooperative at all but you are working together towards that and because of that and because of what you're building up and contributing to that you always feel accomplished and i thought that was really interesting um standout mechanism yeah that's the neat i do like that in games we're doing it now or we're doing it at the end do it now okie dokie you're going to get pie what was it what was the 45 100 i should have said 5 000. i'm leaving again i like how you first first type first sign of trouble and you're out yeah [Applause] i'm going to be over here hanging out with mike why are you guys going to take a [Music] somebody should have worn a different shirt no you were wearing a tie okay wow okay seriously okay you got where you're good you guys are boring i think we're good all right here we go ready no roy's not ready ready roy here we go light them up light them up like a christmas tree [Music] it's pie time baby called getting properly fined that's how you get pies people okay watch out for a girl basically all is on the floor what yes i got it all right oh it's all good you're good your beard is dripping thank you all right tom that that was right that's getting pied right now most satisfying i'm not adding anything handles yeah i think we're good it was good but if you like that uh thumb up the video next one number one [Music] my number one is a game that uh i rated a 10. it's hope so dylatin it is a game that i mentioned it before and i'm going to say it what are we missing why is she holding a nail after you just find me she's been holding a nail this whole yeah she's videoing she's been fiddling with a nail this whole time you were too said i lost the nail right after you pied me oh and then i found it you've been involved i should have missed opportunities you've been in arm's reach of being impaled this entire video i guess you didn't realize my number one is a game that i i kind of the first time i played i felt like this game was designed for me it was almost like if i could have given a checklist of things i like in games they're all in my number one which is dwellings of elders checklists apparently from your number one and two takes up the entire table yeah it takes up a lot of table space and it's great it does inside this too yeah and that's doesn't matter because it's a great game and uh the the only thing that that people i know will will say is that yeah i wish i can get a hold of it it didn't go into regular retail yeah that sucks i wish i wish that it was more easily accessible i wish that you know more people can get a chance because i think that's the thing that has held it back a little bit is that not enough people have played it but you know what it's my number one game there's no game that i that i like more than dwellings of eldervale i just feel like it is such a great design that incorporates it's another hybrid game it's another game that feels uh like it should be this big dumb minis game and it is absolutely not a big dumb minis game even though it has big dumb minis in it that you know earlier yeah like you put them down and they go they roar right stuff but really goofy yeah really goofy but it kind of leans into that to understand like i've said this before and i get wrecked every time but i don't care i think it's a game that is self-aware like they kind of knew what they were doing with this right they knew it was a little over the top this you know production is over the top and ostentatious but it is such a great design take away all of that stuff if that if that is too much for you the game design is really really good luke laurie is a designer that i've really been impressed you know manhattan project energy empire is a really good is a really good game dwellings of eldervale is my favorite game is a really good i don't think this is going to be reprinted and i'll tell you why because the person who spearheaded this and did all of it no longer works for that company correct now it could happen but this company sells the rights of the game so that's kind of a weird weird mix up there yeah so thank you charles thank you charles yeah and that is a shame because man this is a game that deserves to be played by a lot of people it is so so good um i just love it i love everything about this game dwellings of eldervale you do indeed all right well my number one is no big surprise it's number one last time it's number one the time before that my number one game is 51st state 51st state is a tableau building game it's a resource management game it's also about some burnt out buildings in the post apocalypse i'm okay with that i like that i want more of it the only thing missing more sins in this you are going to be taking and building cards some of them are going to produce resources some let you turn resources into points or other things yes you can mess with your opponents and you know destroy their locations it doesn't really happen that frequently in games i play you are not hurting them that much usually by doing that and it's pretty depleting for you there's nothing here that i would really change too much you know what i mean it's this and part of that is iterations you know yeah this is 51st state master set or whatever they call it well the first time i played 51st state was just a little off the race for the galaxy so i was like yeah it's a while ago that came out and then a standalone game called new era came out and there were expansions for that then imperial settlers came out which was sort of inspired by it and then 51st state master said sort of took those things and put so so yes of course it's it's sharp and clean already it's been innovated upon a bunch of times but i just really love this game i love everything about about it atmospherically thematically and mechanically i know there's a a new big box or something coming out with another new expansion and i can't wait for that you know there's another more stuff for there's already three expansions they're neat they do their own thing and another one yes please keep on keep on bringing it like mike says with the with the two fourths i want more my number one 51st state i think it's a really good pick i think mike i really enjoyed this game um because you taught it to me yeah and i really enjoyed it because it's not asymmetrical players but you said you have that specialty yeah right you know so yeah i mean yeah i hate to say asymmetrical that feels too much for what it is but you really do feel very different you know i think that kind of sets your path to victory or whatever you know your play style based on the different faction that you play and i i really liked that because it wasn't completely asymmetric but you did feel really special in one one area you know and that really that was a lot of fun yeah i played uh i taught chris too i think he liked it too right you've taught everyone in this game practically i told you this game you did you love it it's your number one as well you taught me the very old version so i don't even know if the new one i might like better i don't know i mean if you played the original this is really kind of nothing like it it wasn't the game um okay well i'm gonna alpine myself would you we've never done that before all right i don't have a roof thank you sebastian thank you thank you all right uh my number one i mean obviously people have guessed what it is by now in the chat cult of the new some people are shouting and screaming this has only happened once before where a new game went to my number is for you why like my game was for me first first year i mean so my number one is arc nova what yeah this is the one i thought he was talking about earlier i so actually this is also why lahav is number three right because arc nova just punched it right out sure they they're both good games but the reason it did push the hop down to number two and said cosmic encounter snuck in is because if i'm going to play a game like this i pick arc nova right then i'm going to pick cosmic then i'll go to but anyway i just and and these guys get a test i've played this almost weekly since it's come out or i've taught it yes it's i don't ever do that with games other than well when gloom even came out so i don't feel bad about this if you ask me what game i want to play right now it's it might be a new game because i do like playing new games or dark nova yeah that's that that's what it is i like all the mechanisms i know they stole every mechanism in this game is from something else but it mixes together well it's just pretty smooth i i don't know i think about this i've dreamed about this game okay well we can stop while we're ahead [Laughter] i can certainly see this getting into my top 100 i need to play it i'm also not the only person who is this oh no this is excited about the game it's not like it's i don't think people i'm trying to think of another game recently that's had as much hype uh dream isn't this creepy dream about yourself it has a tremendous amount of hype and it was like yeah right away you know gloomy even gained hype uh wingspan game type game type size but scythe was like no it almost reminds me of when kayla's first came out well yeah it's like this is so everybody that that likes euros is talking about this yeah but i hate euros right i heard it right but still somehow this got on the list yeah i really like it maybe we'll go down there it's not go it's not coming off the list sure and i'm not even looking for expansions i don't i'm sure there's inevitable expansions yes but man it's all it's not often that i like games that use pictures you know i prefer actual artwork and i think that they it was a bold move for them to do in this one but it was i feel the same way yeah that was well done hard no it does work in this one you're right it does animals let's stay on that theme i know your number one is yeah it's gonna do right everyone knows what your other one is now yeah it's more specific so i thought it was really interesting because last year was three two one side terraforming mars wingspan and it's the exact same this year as well so i thought that was really interesting so this one has been number one for two years in a row debuted at number three um yeah tom you said this on it was your 38 and you said it's probably higher on the people's choice yeah and you are correct well i knew that i knew where it was no but i i mean i know so some good foreshadowing this game is very popular 12 on my list 30 what on yours 38 is what i have written down okay 38 on yours because i was doing the time stamps and so i wrote it down four way crossover you know four weeks across just out of your top 50 but otherwise top 50 yeah one or something after that than me the 54 yeah yeah yeah i think what sets this one apart is it's really it's a unique theme you know in the board game especially when it first came out right um but it's just approachability yep you know it's really approachable it's a simple set of rules but then each card is unique and each card again i'm a sucker for that theme integration it makes sense you know the the food that they need in order to be able to place them down in your not a meadow we played meadow yesterday your aviary or yeah you're trying to attract like the wetlands and the something and you're seeing in your scene ecosystem there you go into your ecosystem i call it a zoo there you go [Laughter] i'm a smoker put it in the smoker oh my goodness oh delicious yeah so the whole time you're drafting the cards individual ones and then playing them out for that in-game scoring and i just think that it has all those really good mechanisms but keeps it very approachable yeah which i think just makes it hits the table and and yeah and gives it legs the fact that it is so popular means that it also has very many vocal detractors too so sure i mean it's just yeah and there's always something like i can't believe has made it it's not even close we haven't seen the numbers it's overwhelming it's very strongly you may think it's overrated but it's liked i mean i was one of those people until i played it you know and so i mean maybe some i'm not saying if you think that you haven't played i'm saying for me personally i was like i really didn't have an interest i was like everybody loves it it's just a simple game it's got you know uh my plate i was like okay no it does have some charm and i could see it hitting the table because of that approachability that you know theme integration that kind of boiled down mechanisms that i think work really smoothly together and for a first published game by designer i'm sorry that's a huge accomplishment just like loomhaven you know yeah right yeah all right folks thanks so much for watching we are done now with the top 100 games of all time but there is
