[Music] tom vassell's top 100 games of all time [Music] [Music] the voice of the people [Music] good afternoon everybody i'm tom vassell i'm mike delecio i'm z garcia and the voice of the people the people's champion roy candace victory for the people listen this is this is combat let's do this so i asked a poll today did you see the post i don't know that i did see the poll i asked people which top 100 say surprise them the most oh of the four people what do you think it was z is correct it was probably because it's the only thing about agreeing or disagreeing that's what surprised you the most i bet it's because of only my second time doing a top 100 list right i mean they've heard you're like what they listen to like better games no they hear tom and z's list they're like oh yeah that trash again i've heard this for four years in a row you know what i was trying to give him somewhat of a compliment to turn this into a competition not me pick on him you can't go because he's the right champion i can't remember one of your lists doesn't match the people's exactly you're wrong because the people are right before we start let's do some shout outs to some some backers i'd like to say thanks to oh i said thanks to these people yesterday so you get nothing thank you to jake glow from singapore yes yes to yes a cly i still think this is not true the sole member of the gaming group shot and taught and sold at 10 10 10 toon stelling located in teotihuacan wow oh wow that is not real to joshua bach to jeff nego and jean-baptiste grosslyn i like that name that's it that's a good name jean-baptiste grossly strong yep yep yeah i love it alrighty well hey we are now in the top 40. whoa finally top 40 hits fresh fresh fresh does that still happen what's that yeah there's a top 40 you still think does anyone here listen to radio no no no it's all syndicated there's like one person that does all of the radio stations across the country who is it though what are we in today it's two for tuesday hey everybody this is the illuminati mike is in that radio the fewer questions you ask about this the better tom you want to be blissfully i gotta tell you my total radio listening time is like maybe five minutes a year yeah and that's when i accidentally press the button actually it goes to radio right that's the only thing for five minutes well no i'm counting it you add it all up it makes that mistake daily or i get in the car my wife listens to the radio and i immediately turn off like i have better music here we're trying to figure out if my car can even play the radio i don't know yeah radios radio streaming radio's like newspapers now right it is it is we bring up radio because as always with these lists we start with mike so here we go number 40. wow that was a crack at my age i feel like that was a smooth transition very smooth all right so my number 40 it kind of kills me that it's dropped this far stopped 26 places but it's not because the quality of the game is any less but tom's gonna say it is because he's never liked this game to begin with um my number 40 is the city of kings and it's i still think this is a really really good puzzle game that looks like a dungeon crawler it's absolutely not it's a game that is kind of a versatile system you can different scenarios will play as a pickup and deliver type of a game where you're trying to get things from one location moving to another other scenarios are combat based but it looks a bit like a dungeon crawl you've got tiles out there on the board you're moving around on the board flipping over for exploration maybe facing monsters maybe finding you know a farm where you can buy goods and things along those lines i really like it because again it's essentially a puzzle game it's a cooperative game but it's fallen because so many other games that take this amount of time and this amount of setup and and tear down which is significant are ones that i'm gravitating to more and which ones i'm not going to mention them because they're further up on my list yeah what do you want what is this there are multiple games that are further up on the list that have knocked this down a bit i still think it's a very clever design i think it's pretty misunderstood the city of kings my number 40. i agree with tom i your boy i don't know i'm not gonna say the game is trash i don't think it's great but it just it for me it's one of the biggest letdowns like i was like i went into it expecting something and i don't even think i went into it falsely expecting it because the game kind of promises you this big exploration thematic game okay okay there we go the city of games in the chat oh okay so let me let me let me rephrase what i'm saying here i like cats he likes i love cats city of kings is a good game you don't have to like it you can be wrong you're perfectly entitled to be wrong as long as one of us at the table is correct we're good all right i like how this works here let us uh now summon stefan feld up here ye in the chat is this the game i just kicked out the library no it's not that's not in my top 100. i i i kicked out a duplicate cop yeah yeah i got rid of our extra copy of castle burgundy we're now we have castle of burgundy not burgundy's yeah there's one in there no i like this much more than that one of my favorite failed games bruges oh which is being reprinted as some others oh i'm very curious if you're gonna change it to the new city i just doubt it i really like this one unless the new one mechanically is that much stronger i know they're making a few little tweaks but no this one i just like um you can liven up pretty much any euro game for me by giving it some more personality and that easily can be done with characters you know right special like unique illustrations of characters who live and live in the city and have unique abilities also so bruges does that you will you know draw these character cards and then they're multi-use cards they can do like five things each you can build a building you can discard it for goods you can clear away things that are harmful or you can just employ that person and then they'll have some ability it's yes a fell game it's kind of a point salad game get a few points doing this doing that a little bit of everything but this is one of my favorites because it just has a little more places i can anchor anchor onto to keep it from being so bland many of his games have blend it's not bad necessarily that can be very you know thought provoking this one gives me that and a little more so bruges beautiful this is a one i'll be keeping forever especially because it might get hard to find i'm kind of dragging my feet i'm waiting for this new somewhat overpriced version you haven't played this at all no i played i'm just saying i i i want to play it again right but i was waiting for the new but this new city collection by queen which is a reprinting of this has left such a huge sour taste at this point the way they've handled the last and making them so expensive and acting like it's a new game when it's not i don't like anything about it right i might be changed when it comes in so i'm i'm holding off some judgment some some of my judgment's already gone out on that so hopefully it's good you were saying bruges might be hard to get a hold of this is one that's consistently been hard to get a hold of like it goes in and out of print all the time so okay my number 40 which has only been a noise for three years was 34 last year so pretty close um is not has been in print for a really long time and when i originally played it i think i might have said it was a five or a six wow and now it's about i don't know why this the new version although it's ugly the original version was ugly they made the new version uglier but they added mechanisms to it which made the game better and that's st petersburg whoa now this cover is not particularly ugly yeah uh but when you look at the characters in the game especially the ones where they stuck people in and i'm one of them so there's that well you are they just and they they're ugly they just slap the photoshop paint thing and the game itself that does not look particularly amazing that's straight fire tom it looks like it's full of theme look at that yeah but man this game goes through five phases when you play with five phases which i like doing five phases in each phase you're buying cards they give you money or points every round so you have to decide do you want the money first you always want the money like in real life would you like some points or money money money but points make you famous money uh but bad this game and it plays really well with two but i found recently that i've also enjoyed playing with more this is another one that i bring out at almost every convention these days it's been a lot of years since i've played tom hates euros i do right that's so good i do hate such a funny um perception yes well my number 40 saint petersburg there you go yeah all right the people's number 40 has been on the list since 2011. oh and it was the highest was up to nine so it's slipped a little bit it's down to 40. and it kind of like slipped a little bit um here and there but it was 52 last year and it's back up to 40. all right this is race for the galaxy space game this is the game that's stuck around for a really long time why roy's here okay first of all i don't even think you love this game i do love this game it's in space no i i love the actions in this game what's your favorite thing about this game really the way the turn the actions work in this game think about it there's a card you play it down oh you played with actions i like the fact that you can go military and try to get the planets out i love the fact i love the uh the the getting points off of planets with the resources like trying to build that engine is really fun race for the galaxy's a great pick and it's been around forever so even though the fact that this game isn't that easy to learn or easy to get into right people are still coming back to it i will say that i'm impressed that it's still in the list right yeah yeah it's way higher than roll is i think rolls on here but quite a bit further has res arcana showed up for the people yet yeah last week i mean this is yeah clearly this is better than res archives they're really close this is better you can see your race is on there um 43. come on it was 43 trash i i think the biggest issue with it is that it's another one of those games where you have to really get the best out of it people that have somewhat equal skill levels because if you're good at this and you're teaching somebody you really have to either nerf yourself somehow play sub-optimally on purpose take weird strategy yeah go for something really out there because you're going to crush them i do yeah do you like going for those weird things this is the only game i've ever played where i had someone literally stand up and walk away in the middle of the game because they were just confused about the way it worked just because the iconography wait we can do that you can't my whole gaming career has just changed they were like [ __ ] please i was like that's a military plan you can't discard to play that in honor of roy tomorrow when i play word oh space will be my first word ah that's that's that's a losing move earth earth is always the smartest star is that the one you start with every time really yes today i started with feast oh that's not bad and i got it in three so in your face is there a weight sometimes you're going to do the one yesterday that was rough i got it though i got it i got it but you notice though that even though we did it and we talked about it briefly i don't post a picture of my wordle every day i don't care what your picture looks like it's so annoying some of those pictures today was difficult number 40 race for the galaxy my number 39 is another one of those games i talked about yesterday uh that i feel like it's kind of like my game uh you made it people i wish people don't seem to talk about it very much and i get it and i also haven't played it in a while i'm a little bit worried that if i played it you know i would lose some of its luster but my number 39 is raddus i absolutely have loved this game uh now i will say and z doesn't like it no no no i i liked this game for a long time yeah and it did lose its luster yeah i need to play it again but the thing is i've only played it you know like the last 10 times i've played it have been with pie piper for sure and then i'll sometimes we'll add in afrikanis there's been a number of that's my argument this is one of the few games i think needs experience kind of needs at least pied piper i think no it gives you more otherwise the roles get boring and also apparently you can play this game in such a way that it's kind of like well if you just never choose a character then you're almost guaranteed to win also i don't want to play that way that that's just oh that i haven't heard but yeah well whether it's true or not i don't care because i never played that way and i've never played with somebody who played that we don't have this in the dice library oh we don't we have radis the card game oh yeah rattus card which i think is fine it's fine but i prefer addis it's essentially a game themed around the the plague as you might expect and you are moving this kind of grim reaper like it's killing millions of people black token around the board and it is killing off population it's really an area majority type of a game at heart where you are flipping over tokens one of the things i really like about it is that mechanism of you get these you can draft characters as many as you want and they all have special powers that do great things however they also make it more likely that when you flip over one of these tokens one or more of these tokens that it's going to hit your population and i really like that push and pull of i want these powers but i don't want to make myself more vulnerable to the the the grim reaper so to speak uh very small game very quick game i just have always had great affection for this one so but i need to play it again and see if it's going to stay there i think the luck for me started to become much more oh it's very loud you know yeah i eventually got rid of it but i had all that stuff yeah africanus by piper all of it yeah all the promo characters yeah yeah those are those are silly too that is one of those mechanisms though that i am surprised i haven't seen elsewhere yeah this idea of give yourself as much as you want and then we might penalize you for having you're more likely to get penalties not guaranteed but you're more likely and if you take those powers you can't get rid of them unless someone takes them from you right which is also a great little thing too yeah yeah yeah all right my 39 is a brand new game to the list a surprise hit from this year oh loved it top ten uh it was in my top ten of the year and that is bad company whoa bad company quite high is uh my goodness a really fun dice driven game with you putting together a gang of characters going on heists um racing away from the cops chasing you down trying to you know hire new people and extend your well their height for one thing but extend your reach and extend your ability to tell people is always a good thing yeah they just get taller and taller especially right in the in the midrift um i really like this yeah this is a fun game it's very lighthearted i like that the artwork and the you know thematically they treat it very lighthearted the whole thing is just fun it seems to prioritize that there are mechanisms there and they generally kind of get out of your way to let you have fun i like a game that works that way you know where the game it seems to me that a philosophy of the designers was yeah yeah yeah this is great we could over complicate this or simplify and get out of the way of the players that's how this feels to me you know i wonder how many games by christian ospie are going to end up on your list this is i think the third so far already i really that i've kept it tracking no four four because you had two rowing rights yeah trails of chicana and riverside and automania and automania also there's four right there and there might be more there might be more that's yeah i i like this this was in my tumbler when i made the top one it just didn't hit the top 100 but it's a very solid game i really it's good i played it a few more times after reviewing it just it it plays really well you're like it's so easy to teach yeah we've had a lot of math on the channel so yeah yeah yep good stuff there it is all right well let's go to old school my number 39 is one of the few games that's been on my list since the very beginning was seven bounces around but this is still the king of area control oh wow i was 35 so yeah um mad though i just wish guess that's pretty terrible chris is in the room yeah that's what happens the bubble is expanding i blame chris i just wish somebody would make a version of this that i wasn't embarrassed to have at the table what do you mean you don't like uh year and yellow awards do you think i would like this game you said i love the gameplay yes because you like games that are in your face what are your thoughts on caballeros it's got cubes i'm out yeah but i mean i i wish they would change those even like to just a little meeples yeah i said just throw them in the thing though right you don't know you bling everything in the world why wouldn't you bling this one out put real miniature humans in there yes actually but you know what i can't bling out is that board yeah i cannot fix the board matt get a match just change it change the colors yeah that's all i know you were watching yesterday yeah fian's on the channel that's a dice average just 400 000 will you make us a customer el grande board whoa that's good for us both ways he's not giving anything up the upside is for you to told you that you don't make it you make him a board i don't understand he's not going to walk [Laughter] wright organizing wolfgang's games are okay that's great is that right oh you better believe that of course not there's no way that's hilarious i need i need the proof like when you show a picture of yourself is that a verified account there is a female check mark it's fantastic miss dr kenitia we will be doing your top 100 next week me and mike i'm looking forward to it it's fun also three yeah we'll go it's a great game yeah people's number 39 is an extremely thematic game set in the cthulhu mythos um this is a game where the first edition was super like people liked it but it was hard to get to the table but then they made a second edition with app integration and it exploded and lots of people really enjoyed that it was major the madness second edition that's the one well you picked the list for this one i know well obviously you told us to pick ones that we like the games i love manges of madness it's an extremely thematic game as you're going around trying to solve different mysteries it's app driven cooperative game and there's a lot of cooperation in this game another thing that this game does really cool is the original version of this had like these little cardboard puzzles this puts all that in the app and there's way more puzzles in my words yes a million players mastermind to try to like solve glyphs and you can get word that's the new version they could easily do that in future stuff but uh but yeah there's all sorts of awesome stuff it means the madness and it just gives you that atmosphere yeah i just wish the minis were better i really hate the matter they don't you don't use them i don't use them i should say i mean i i've glued them in and they're fine and they work for what they're supposed to be but there's a ton of them my main complaint with this is the tiles it's so hard with the tile manager yeah i have everything for the game all of it and i love the game but like it's like oh pull this tile out because i have everything like turned on it's like where's that tile but i still love it i played this over uh the halloween time i always looked like this weren't they making a completely apt version of this at some point they were making a video game i don't think it's necessarily the same thing but i haven't i would play here's a video game of this that was the the whole thing just poured it over it all the way over why could you just do the well i guess you couldn't do the books like like loom haven't did you could you could maybe you should do tiles so no you shouldn't know what the rest of the place yeah that's the issue well they had that thing where you took another book and attacked yeah part of the mystery in this too is like it's in the bedroom down the hall in the west corner and you have to be like okay where's where's the bedroom over there you know half of that's solving that sort of stuff in the game but yeah love matches the madness it's a great game and it's really high on the people's choice so number 39 means a madness all right my number 38 utilizes one of my favorite mechanisms in board gaming and i think it's not one of the ability to stand up and leave in the middle of the game i will not stand for it um i i think this is not that popular with the general gaming public it's pickup and delivery this is this on every game i know this is a pure pure pickup i'm trolling he's even dressed like a hipster he's a little hipstery today where's maya venti your beard needs to be a little longer you need my venting scarf yeah i do and a beret maybe an ascot my number 38 is cinque terre speaking of hipsters it is the five villages unfortunately this game i think had one print run was never reprinted i wish they would it's a beautiful welcoming plus just above welcoming game i think there's the scoring is a little bit tricky to wrap your head around if you're a brand new gamer but other than that it's a very very simple game of evaluating what the value of fruits and vegetables are trying to get them and deliver them to customers that want them where you are spending the least amount of money and making more when you sell it you know it's very simple pick up and delivery economic game contract fulfillment with a gorgeous production this is one of my favorite rio grande productions only yeah i think it's beautiful the only downside not a high bar it's not a high bar at all that's why i said that the only downside is that the little trucks i do wish that they had made it so that you can place the stuff inside the little truck instead your player board represents your truck and you put it there some people have 3d printed them i've seen where you can actually place the little cubes in there and that that's kind of cool but other than that a really good game i just wish it was more available i like chris handy stuff usually so this is one i need to get around to playing at some point this kind of came and went and i saw it waved that as a drove by and i was like i'll play it probably i think it's in the library tom oh there you go you just made some room i think it might be in the morning [Laughter] all right my number 38 was 14 last year 23 before that um i guess it's dropping this is a solo game one i talk about a lot when i teach a lot i seem to be the only one that people come to when they want to learn this game because nobody else seems to care that much well nairam is my 38. okay i like it think back like go back and know if i only have two years worth of data here but this was in my top ten yeah very high probably in my top 10. um i would say this is my i think this is my favorite solo game let me double check that i don't have something else on here that i really like solo but i don't think so i don't think so i might enjoy this better as an app yeah because have you played the app no is that no there's a good app yeah because that that look i i'm a big dominion fan but the shuffling in this game is ridiculous yeah well then just yeah the app takes the app is good i mean it is does it doesn't happen no okay look i i promise i wouldn't make fun of the art anymore so i just was asking a question clarifying and that's that i think the art is charming and i think it suits the theme i have a question for you are you going to be wearing that hat for the rest of the time why are you such a jerk i'm just asking is there a question and i just noticed is that what you're wearing yes okay you made your point um this is uh yeah really neat again solitaire card game you play with two it's fine whatever if you like traditional kind of klondike with a deck of cards or that sort of thing you're looking for something with a little more going on i think this is a great game for that it's it's it's not really any bigger than that i just find it really fun it's a great way to kill 15 minutes you know there you go my number 38 oh nyrum or o'near him or whatever you want to call it yeah i'm not sure it's time for me to pay a tribute to the great jamie stigma all right and put the game that will probably be higher in the people's choice and that's wingspan on the list for three years straight i know that wingspan is definitely one of those games that nowadays it's cool to be like i don't get it yeah i don't get why people have bought a million copies of this game with a theme that a lot of people enjoy makes no sense to me but beautiful artwork yeah with great components and a fun game style also did you know it's broken i don't know any of that stuff i just know i like playing the game right and i've really really blinged mine out i got sparkly eggs in my hair oh my gosh and birds copy oh there's three amazing copies and you took you took the least amazing copy that's okay but even that's just too much yeah yeah you go crazy sometimes all right the only thing i don't like is that you can't fit the expansions in the box that really bugs me in this game because really like for the first one for example um europa that's fine i like the latest one isn't it no latest one i would have just shuffled those cards and left them in yeah but then it doesn't really fit in a box unless you chuck that nice insert which i did but you could have two of those i think i did two maybe yeah yeah so that's my i'm assuming there's a big box under horizon whatever even if there's not there will be i would i would put a lot of money down big box wingspan sounds like a giant swan but i just like this game i like the engine building part of it i don't care that the different strategies i like that every bird is different i'm a big fan of every car to deck being different yeah theme you'll see as we go through i just like that sort of thing and i don't mind a bird theme i think that's fun too so i'm looking forward to the next bird one is coming the next expansion oh is coming right i don't know where it is for for wingspan yeah i'm surprised yeah i don't remember i don't even know what cotton it is i'm not sure i think it's supposed to be in the land of scythe um wingspan it's done very very well it has made elizabeth hargrave a name in the board game industry for sure um and it's been i he releases his numbers it's also his biggest selling game sure but it's also one i like a lot so there you go number 38 yes so the people's 38 is a game that's been on the list for three years now it was on z's list last week it's not a game i'm super into but i think the people know what's up uh this is uh marvel champions uh oh you are a lying liar i love marvel championship but i mean this is an lcg it's like a lifestyle style game but like the marvel ip and the connected the lifestyle style lifestyle style game like you have to get into it there's a lot of stuff going on there's tons of different styles how many styles you play as marvel super heroes and it works really well solo works really well two players i do agree that three and four is a bit much it's really long at that point but if you're into the game and you know it really well you could do that you have to know it really well to make that smooth i think is the difference right and you have to learn the game at four is a mistake yeah you should play it at that time plan a two if you're learning yeah but it's cool they keep coming out with more and more heroes and it's a very mechanical game like as far as like it's all like numbers and things like that but they still figure out a way to make those characters have a little bit that flare of that character it's like oh man iron man's got all these different parts that are coming together well this person has these combos it kind of makes sense oh we have this character that deals with weapons it's war machine with tons of weapons shooting everywhere it's really cool to see how they use like just the text on the cards and the numbers and things to make it feel like that superhero and i've played through basically everything there is for this game and have a blast with it so the people have a great choice here they're 38. we don't know this but i'm going to make this speculation that marvel champions is the highest grossing non-collectible card game in the hobby market like take magic out pokemon out the collectible card games of everything else and i'm not talking again i'm thinking about mass market two so in the hobby games man the pax collectible card every time a new pack comes out everyone's buying them yeah and it's it's easier than arkham horror for example because right you're like uh which pack uh i'll get this one right this one you're like i like vision right i'm buying them 100 there's not really campaigns in this like there is an arkham horror this you can buy those boxes that have like a little bit of a story like little campaigns you can still play those things individually if you want to also it's all combined into one thing and it's like five games in a campaign so it's not like it's like a ton of like effort to pull together and you get new heroes and all that stuff so people are really digging this and the rate the releasing had a pretty good clip yes they are but they still have at least a hundred a-listers that they can put out oh yeah this is they haven't even touched x-men yet have they there's been rumors or whatever that they're about here first guaranteed x-men roy candidate wow i think it did leak or whatever like the name of one of the big bags give me wolverine give me wolverine yeah exactly and put batman in there while you're around that's right can you please can we get some batman this game's going to go on for a long time as long as fantasy flight is able pretty soon this is the only game they're gonna have they're like um here's the in-flight report let's talk about marvel champions and then i'll drop the mic and it's over i would be okay with that you know but it's it's awesome i like it a lot people's number 38. my number 37 has dropped a little bit but it's still a game that i like quite a bit it is essentially a card game although it's really marketed more as a board game bruno catala i know what it is baby and i love it ocean themed abyss my number 37 is abyss and that's actually the cover that i have this that's what you have i have that covered what appointment no no that is the super rare uncommon foil cover i have right there the foil cover his eyes follow you around the room that's right it came with a booster pack you buy five of them the chase the chase so this is a lovely card game again that has a board but you're essentially trying to gain the allyship of different underwater races and and play cards for effects it's got a little bit of a pusher lock thing going on in there it also has a couple of expansions that uh uh can add some nice things particularly the kraken what was that called leviathan expansion yeah but even the base game itself is is just a beautiful smooth card game that uh never see never fails to go over well i don't think i've ever not everyone has loved it but i've never played this with somebody and they're like this game is terrible i hate this game so this is what i like to do me too yeah i like that because that board is largely superb it is yeah but it helps teach right on your turn you go here or here or here yep you know and so like there's just a nice flow to that board yeah i enjoy teaching this one i taught this at uh the last retreat yeah i saw yeah and this is a game that has continually stayed in print like i don't know that this has gone out of print like they just they they really strike a new version but it's just basically the same game same thing yeah it has a new cover now that's like the standard one yeah now yeah yeah this has done i'm guessing well pretty well it's yeah it's stuck around yep absolutely so that's my 37 abyss very nice my 37 is also new to the list i was somewhat surprised that it ended up this high on my list it's a big game it's a thank you game it also happens to have an ip that i enjoy but i'm not i'm not you know kind of griffin obsessive about dune imperium whoa this is my 37. i know it it's also the last one on this list i like it um it's not one i want to play all the time okay obviously this is big it is demanding it's a demanding game but this gives you a lot to think about this is a fun worker placement slash deck building game it's got some some neat things to think about you're racing to 10 points or thereabouts yeah which means every point you make is like clawing at the sands as you see the spice flurries rise that was that was that was beautiful next level that was a little ham fisted i think crowing at the spies there's a little patent oswald there actually all right um yeah dune imperial i'm sure it's going to be on perhaps other people's lists later on it's a they knocked it out of the park did playing the expansion uh influence do you think the placement no i think the expansion is excellent yeah uh i don't think i would always play with it i'm not sure if i would actually i'm not sure if i'd always play with it because it does make a thinking game that's stickier thinkier and longer it does you know it does yeah i don't think it makes it longer i think it does i do think it makes it longer and thinkier expansion's great though but even just the base game you just have more decisions and i think that's going to make it longer okay yeah there you go dune imperium all right finally since 63 was the last one i'm at a new game to the list whoa and this one is this one has gotten a lot of controversy around it's ranked fairly highly but it's because it's based on two very distinct games one which we already mentioned said uh marvel splendor no it's terraforming mars aries expedition so based on terrifying mars and then also based on race for the galaxy i don't mind that it's based on race for the galaxy um and i find it odd that people are like they stole it it's a very different game and it's just a mechanism that they use but it's a mechanism i really like and honestly has been out of vogue for like a decade yeah we haven't seen that play a car i mean a few games but not many yeah and i'd like this better than terraforming mars there's a few things from terrifying mars i miss but not many i don't miss the lack of take that cards i really don't no i don't miss the the income is cleaner in this game yeah it is that's true and then i just like that race for the galaxy mechanism on top of it yes it's a frankenstein game there's no question right and yes a lot of people hate it for various reasons i've seen there's another one that a lot there's like a backlash but again it's also very popular and i really enjoy it um and as evidenced by terrifying mars still my top 100 but i'll play this one first now if only they made a better scoring board for it i haven't printed out stuck in the box but yeah so terraforming mars aries expedition all right nice great game um the people's 37 is a game that i just mentioned made by the same kind of marvel champions again close it's the game that came out right before marvel champions arkham har this game is awesome though because there is so much everything where i was saying marvel champions is super easy to disable this one's hard to get to the table but the story is so rich and it's crazy how they build that up as you're playing through the different campaigns you're like doing different things and making a little bit of choices and those choices kind of affect what happens in the campaign or affect what characters unlock and you're able to use and things like that you're building up your deck as you go along it's got a really cool like action system that i enjoy that makes you feel like like it feels like pandemic-ish sort of thing where it's like you have four points or whatever you can do it however you want um you do that a lot in this game it feels like net runner mash up a little bit i guess and now i can see the influence of those sort of things in the arkham heart card game i really enjoy it and the people really like it a lot too so that's why it's there i just like the 37 the simulation of a board yeah it's i think the the the master you know stroke of genius here is that idea of locations are represented on cards so this one is a map of the entirety of egypt just put a few cards out you can go from one to another and this one is a building in a dingy downtown and so you arrange the cars like this you can go from one location to another that's just neat there's like the venice one which you line up locations in a street you can only go in one direction because the crowd is pushing you along in the during the carnival it's like just that they can basically give you a board it's a simulated board with each one and it works that's clever man you know sometimes we'll do weird stuff like in the deck it's like oh you flip over this card but that now it's a new location it's like wait what now i'm going there you know there's all sorts of weird interesting stuff that they do and have made like very unique mechanics in this to kind of like bring out that story and and yeah excitement you know but it's not easy yes it's definitely not easy arkham horror the lcg sorry you're laughing at mike i was wondering what number we were on and he pointed out that it was on the screen over there anyhow my number 36 is a game that uh is a storytelling game and we just got the sequel today so i've got the sequel to it today my number 36 is near and far um i've already replaced mine with them yeah the new one there i haven't played it punch it right the rules yeah well this is a trilogy of games this is the second of the trilogy that started with above and below near and far now or never is the one that we just got a hold of today we're both we're all very excited about that i think but near and far is just a really this was i felt the first game that really pretty seamlessly incorporated mechanisms that felt like a board game and story that felt like a story um often times i felt like it when you play these types of games it's it one does pretty well and the other one not so well for example above and below is more about the game correct so this one i feel like did a really good job of being a perfect kind of marriage of those two things with again incredible art and world building that you can always expect from ryan lockett the designer the artist the publisher the publisher the the yeah everything just about um and you can play this as a campaign which i have i think it's a 10 i think i was looking up earlier today you played through 10 scenarios that's great you can play it as a one-off that's great uh just a really solid game you can get an expansion that turns it into a co-op if you want to so um i really really like near and far and i'm very excited about what's to come i like the fact that the one-off in this game doesn't ever feel i never feel like i'm not really seeing the game yeah that's true it works well it does like there's these different characters that show up and you'll be like oh i met him in another game right you know and that works for me yeah that's true there's actually a third way you can play it through a character's story arc you can play that way or a whole campaign or yeah or you can even play the the very boring arcade arcade yeah no one should do because you have the other three ways to play yeah there's no real reason to really good game all right my number 36 is also new to my list a uh i think this came out this past year very popular um i i was going to make a cascadia i was going to bring out calico again but whatever i don't know why those two do not need to be continued to be compared but they will be they're the next matter they're just from the same design studio doesn't matter this game is a very simple straightforward game with a nice amount of puzzly decisions on top of that one where as you've said before your your sphere of possibilities opens up as you play you have more places you can place your uh tiles and your animals more things you can try to go for but of course because it's a puzzle you're shutting some things down too well i want to have a group of bears here in the center well if you put that fish there you're shutting down where a bear could go so you need to juggle all these things there's all these scoring opportunities you can't do fantastically at all of them right so you have to make some choices but the drafting is super quick and easy and then there's a sly thing you can do to bend to that rule great where the tile can go that's easy you know everything is just kind of straightforward uh replayability in this is good game length is great this is one that i also enjoy teaching yeah hasn't been played and seen a lot of table time um i suspect this is one of those evergreens in the making cascadia has all the you know all the trappings for something like that so yeah my 36 lovely lovely game yeah my number 36 i have made it a goal that this year i'm gonna play it at least twice and i'm gonna assemble a dream team and whoop up on some poor unsuspecting fools i'm in that aren't they yeah we talked about it just recently look at this i know what this is this is captain sonar baby oh my who are we talking about because we're wrecking fools i don't know who we were sitting there and i was like i want you you and you some of the guys in there uh yeah man we could almost play this here the problem would be the camera works yeah yeah yeah that would be tricky if you're the captain and i'm working that radar we will wreck shop i don't know eric is pretty good who just got ousted z wow i love this game the first time i played it we played it with the turn-based version i was like ah that's bad let's try this real time because i'm always leery of real time and whenever you get a game that says real time or turn based usually i think the turn base is better in this game the real time makes the game we played it the first time in a crowded convention hall and as soon as we're done i was like again it was so much fun and it's fast everyone's it's it's real time but yet doesn't feel i don't know how to explain it you're all in it together right and you're not necessarily playing against a timer right you're playing against the other team right which also makes it more palatable it's not like oh we only have a minute left now you're like we got to shoot them before they shoot us right and then someone's like stop and everything freezes and you're like please please please please please yes super fun captain zone i've only lost once but i still remember this thing of that defeat and yeah eric was in that and i wasn't oh interesting no no it wasn't that i had a i had a rookie team uh was i in it no i consider you a vet okay i'm good then i'm all right with that i think we beat you at a 24-hour marathon you be we played back-to-back oh you're right no i lost twice boom pulled down and i was on the team that defeated you what and that's true you were not playing the dice at that point i mean i always said definitely had a you still brought them on i definitely had a rookie team so anyway do you hear what roy saying with his rookie team he wrecked you and your veteran team exactly tom like hand-picked at each person too didn't i grab my team though oh there you go there you go that's not a foot i guess you did have really big handicaps that's true submerging oil intoxicated yeah all right november at that point the people's choice number 36 is a viking themed game from garfo games this is raiders of the north sea it's a good this is a i keep thinking this is already showing up but i think it was on our list placement game oh hi still people really enjoy it like a lot i am actually pretty upset that that mike won't show me how to play this game i've asked him several any time he keeps saying uh you you say anytime about a lot of games though nobody was in the middle chris and mike are playing garfield games without me i've never played a garfield game really none of them i have never played a single one and they all start with adrian's wall shipwreck there you go shipwrights is the best one that's not the best one that's definitely shipwrecked number one raiders is great though i i'm excited to play it someday and i know a lot of people really enjoy it so uh yeah we'll play with the expansions man you'll love it awesome the people's number 36 raiders of the north sea it is not great sorry chris and then the break said red november is great it's a terrible absolute cooperative game oh it's a great great reference okay thank you my number 35 is a brand new game to my list and i am so excited you talk about games that you look forward to teaching this is one of those games where i cannot wait to expose more people to this game i've taught it to some people at the retreat had a great time it's a hidden movement it's my favorite hidden movement one versus many game now completely my favorite even more than the the really fun one we play that's not out yet the one bass and the ip the sniper elite yeah yes i prefer this to sniper elite really yeah i think mind management is an absolutely outstanding game and i don't typically love these types of games really the only one that well sniper elite was good i liked that before that it was letters from whitechapel i liked that i did not like fury of dracula i thought it was way too much going on for what it is okay this is a game that i can teach and this is i'm talking the full game not the training mode the full game i feel like i can teach i agree that's beautiful to most gamers and and they're gonna pick it up i feel like it's over in a very reasonable amount of time where it doesn't feel like it's outstate it's welcome but you definitely feel like you've played a full game i really i particularly love the artwork and the theme i know that didn't do as much for you it's it's hard work i mean everybody can just look at it and you know right away i was actually so taken with this game that i have started to look into the comics i actually have them you start reading them i've got the omnibus coming to me on monday from the uh i bought it and it's like the collection of the first however many coming on a bus you said it's called an omnibus oh you can do it you can read it for free but for something like this i don't i don't do a lot of comics or graphic novels but if i do i want them to be got it physical copies anyway so i'm really looking forward to no it's because it's art i want to have that art no that's this is um yeah this is a game that i'm excited to introduce to people and i'm excited to learn more about the lore i think it's a really clever game um it is just that right mix of stuff going on but not hard to to teach and learn this one is actually rising for me i like that we played it i'm liking it more my only caveat is i feel like i want to institute some sort of time limit sure for the people chasing you sure sure i feel like that's the way for many of these games i agree because you definitely could sit there and think for a really long time and math out every single box which is super annoying but that's that's an issue with this genre a lot of times it really is i still if someone can solve that i would love it yeah you know that the fact that you i don't know timer seems like the ham-fisted way to do it yeah but you have to go on a game by game you know group by group basis if they're taking advantage of that that's no fun for anybody you know what i mean except for that maybe the two people mapping it out nice correct it's really good mind management terrific all righty my 35 uh literally just saw a copy of this today because tom put it on my chair oh factory funner wow wait wasn't this already on your list no not yet it hadn't shown up yet oh i put on your chair because it's the new version and it's going in a library but i wanted z's gonna compare to two of them yeah yeah so anyway factory funner um was 45 last time 16 before that i guess it oscillates a little bit there in the top half of my top 100 yeah it's i i get that this game is again i i'm accused of using this word too much sometimes but it's an esoteric game i think it's definitely not a game for everyone it has a real-time element it's a hint a hint of that but generally it is a puzzly game it's a game in which you are connecting all this all these modules with piping trying to make a profit the pipes cost you money the product the goop i think the caller that they produce earns you money and so you want to be efficient and not have wasteful pipes going all over the place costing you money to build them that's the game you play like i don't know eight rounds or ten rounds or something but i i just for my brain some games especially puzzly games anything that falls under that category some will work for you and the way your mind works and some won't this one clicks with me the first time i played this i was at someone's house i think that was the first time i played or maybe like you know early in me discovering it and i played this like three times in a row a full game wow just because it was fun to do the puzzles it does feel though that this is the kind of game where you it's like yes no no no i feel like i don't know if you like it a black or white thing isn't it yeah it's like you like it or you think this is punishing and just kind of not fun to manipulate yeah if they're gonna have fun in the title it better be fun that's all i'm saying i have not played it no no i've never played this but i feel like i would enjoy like the connecting of the pipes and the puzzle of that you know because that's that sort of thing i really like see the problem is it's a weird mix because it mixes that pipe with a hint of that real time and i feel like some people who don't like the real time will hate that that part because it can be a thing i don't normally like real time games but so how is this different than like you you do not like a galaxy truck or you hate galaxy truck that's that's real time the whole way it also doesn't matter how well you do in that but it's real time while you're picking the things for yourself galaxy trucker then has a whole second half and which you just that's the part you don't know your stuff kind of falls apart yeah [Music] games baby this one's been on the list for three years one of my it's my favorite of the weird pictures genre and that's detective club well it's like a whole shelf in the library there's never played this yet this is such a good game i haven't played this yet let's play it on uh friday no i'm good thanks guys that would be a good one factory myself there you go that's the way it's detective club you get a weird picture but you get you give everybody a word and everyone's gonna play cards that match that word see that rules that actually might put donkeys with you but everyone puts out pictures and then you flip the word over and one person didn't know what it was and you know everyone has to explain why they played those cards right okay and i love it because there's someone who played cards and they knew what the word was and their cards don't match at all and they're like hemming and hauling and like well i played this because of this and you're like they're clearly the liar and they're not so even if you're a bad liar you can be in this game because it's hard to be a bad it's hard to be a good truth teller yeah you can be a creative bluffer i played this during the retreat and it went over super well like i really enjoyed this game it's a lot of fun all right this is fantastic and this one happily is widely available yeah finally something on our list that is detective club all right i want to play friday yeah we'll give it a shot awesome uh the people's 35 is a debt building game that has a lot of board game in it as well and it's a pusher luck game called clank so this one is sticking around so there's been other versions of clank out there clank and space and stuff like that but this is the one that people i think keep coming back to it's easier than client space biome yeah and i mean they've come up with tons of expansions for this and lots of different boards and different things there's just something fun about booting up that deck and seeing how far you can go it's like which treasure am i going to try to go for which path am i going to try to take and actually getting the deckboarding stuff and getting the points from those cards are also very important it's like how far can i go and still get out without losing the game i've had a ton of fun playing clank and the people seem to really enjoy it as well it's just a lot of fun and a great deck putting pusher luck experience i think so the people's 35 clank clank my 34 is a very big we're going to lean into our overused words this is a grandiose production i love it it is a asymmetric oh boy this is one of those games i'm not going on a map game i'm gonna call it tower madness my number 34 is cthulhu wars some some might even call this an essential game boy did i get grief for that as well you should to this day to be clear mike i put factory fun on top 10 essentials game everybody should own or whatever yeah yeah that was also probably a mistake look i had reasonings for it but yeah you're right anyway whether it's essential or not i'll leave you to judge that but is it a good game yes it's a great game it's a game that i think is much smarter than i thought it was going to be going in i can say that that's initially true and i think that every time that i've taught this to people they've come away thinking man that is not what i expected it to be dumb at all yeah well you think it's going to be pretty no no look at it it looks like it's going to be a pretty mindless dice trucker and it comes with tons of dice there's enough plastic there to build a refrigerator and you are chucking tons of dice but really refrigerator that's not uh that's not really what the game is about the game is about figuring out what your faction's strength and weaknesses are and how you can best utilize those and also it's about how do you use those spell books to their best advantage when do you because because you can unlock these spell books that are very powerful uh actions that you now have the order that you unlock those is huge and it's going to depend on game to game how you approach that it's going to depend on what other factions are in the game as to how you approach that if you like kind of just big beasty throw a bunch of dice and attack a lot there's factions for that right if you like sneaky come out and everyone thinks that you're a paper you know paper tiger and then you come out on the board and all of a sudden you're in a power position there's factions for that so a really much smarter game that he gets credit for ridiculously overproduced very expensive not always easy to get a hold of granted but i i like it a lot 34. cthulhu i bet it's on the phone i have not played all right where am i at oh a classic my thirty-four is mission we were just talking about this red planet um i i i guess i do mean the second edition sure is the one i have now first edition almost doesn't exist yeah he doesn't really exactly i don't think i really even need to say that anymore but anyway yeah mission red planet is an area control game uh and a character it's not drafting it's i guess character selection game in which you just like in citadel same system you pick a character you are going to in this one you have your own suite of characters don't you sweet soup toot sweet well everyone has the same character sweet sweet of characters yeah just not your suit of characters right yeah sweet yeah that's an odd way to put it but i think that works i would say hand characters but everyone's got the same sweet everyone's got the same characters your own suite of characters when your number gets called it'll do something populate some of the rockets with your people fire off the rocket land on mars take over slash fools tires um and various other egregious things i enjoy it it's faster than you think it's gonna be this is like a 40 minute game sometimes you know it's very quick um lively silly it's from the bruno so katala worked on this but then you got that for duty kookiness not the bruno's the bruno's man don't you feel like this is one of those games where you can all you could be playing and if you've played enough of their of the each designers games you can be like oh i know very clearly this was a catholic thing this was a for duty thing that right don't you feel like you can tell what yeah i'm not normally into space themed games but i really need to try this one i think this is your highest rated for duty game probably i think so because you normally i'm not are not a fan of his but this one's stuff and i i love like area control stuff and the fact that you're saying it's like just like silly [ __ ] i think you would love this game right we talked about maybe playing this on friday like we could make that yep mission red planet oh yeah i'm sorry i was waiting for the the number 10 uh okay um my number 34 was when i first did this list it was 99. wow then it fell off the list for many years came back last year was 86 not to 34. wow i'm telling you this is this is not a game that's ever going to be big in fact it says kickstarter did not do well but i played it at every i know what this is the event we did this year all of them multiple times i think they eventually released it though again no they did release it the kickstarter failed but they released it yeah i played this like another for duty game i played this i think four times at both retreats i just i like teaching this game i've played here in the studio several times it's got to be one of my favorite games curious the people you taught it to what was the general response it is a big mix some people like love it and at conventions potatoes you out of the equation i don't know because i know you love it everybody else would you say how many people would you say thought was it was okay and didn't totally hate it and how many people hated it i would be that because i already have you taught it today deflating my balloon name oh sorry i'll uh you know fill your balloon later there's fun moments when somebody just pulls off that crazy like combo and like it's like look at all the stuff they didn't think they were gonna go there and i got tons of money but you know you're definitely my point being i'm kidding but you're definitely in the minority with this one oh i i don't i don't actually disagree on that i know again the kickstarter did not do particularly well um i did i looked at this for diced out essential um still telling you um but i really enjoy it also the terrible name that's part of it that would have yeah that re-theme or a retirement for money doesn't help you know there's a lot of things going against it yeah so the people's number 34 is a wildly popular um worker placement game that people i i feel like this is maybe even some people's entry into the hobby um this is lords of water oh yeah see i like still seeing this crazy it's crazy that people like because this game was huge huge huge 10 years old this month yeah that's amazing and like people were all about this game i don't hear people talk about it nearly as much but the game is super solid the way it still has a lot of different stuff it's a lot of fun yes and people are really into 2012 yeah and i feel like it helped like bridge a little bit of a gap of like uh-huh this part a lot of people do people coming over and playing more like euro-wish style games or whatever because this is like it feels like a thematic euro where you're going and sending people out on missions and getting all the resources and the whole building part of this where people put their work around a building and you still get stuff for that it still works great and i love that in this game um lords of water deep is a huge game and it's crazy to see it's still on the list because yeah i think it's good i'm glad to see it still there good job this is definitely a classic now i would say modern classic tigers for sure 34 lords of water we almost made it we made it this far that rolls off the tongue really well good job chris we don't get him out there my uh number three is what i like to call a modern classic it is it's um down a lot of places and it's strictly because i have not had a chance to play it dude it's in your it's 33 and no matter i understand it's down a lot of places what was it one [Music] let me put it to you this way right now it is 33 it's down 25 places wait let me guess is it huge no it's a euro game is it from mine clash no it's from days of wonder is it one he likes mm-hmm i think it's one you like i don't know if roy's played it five tries it is five times that's what i'm talking about wait wait wait then i i think five tribes is fine oh okay i thought you really knew this since the beginning you don't love this game look i shun you you sure i told you this when we first started working together if you can't handle this part of our relationship then this is getting real weird okay wow that total therapy set a deep blue turns i sure did a lovely game a fantastic production as you would expect from days of wonder with a really clever bidding for turn order and you're bidding points money is points in this game and it uses kind of a moncala style system where you're picking up a group of different covered colored meeples and you're dropping them on tiles as you go along a path and you can trigger the action of the type of meeple and the tile that you're on the last tile you end on really clever game but again i just don't get a chance to play it as much and that's kind of the thing is that it's hard for me to get it to the table i do like it a lot it does a lot of things i like uh it plays well as a two-player game too actually where you play two you know of those of those as dumb as it sounds i i like six tribes better which should have been the name of the expansion oh i see what you but adding in that six tribe added in one thing i like that the crazy power i mean the purple the purples be right right right yeah i've not played the other expansion there's a couple there are a couple of videos the purple i like because it adds in something interesting and different to the game it adds a little bit of chaos i feel yeah okay yeah no i like it a lot the biggest detractor to it is probably it can be very very ap inducing for certain players some people it really freezes them up yeah right and you you have to be okay with tactical play because the board will be different the board state will be different after everybody's turn so just have to be aware of that 33 five tribes it's a wonderful game my number 33 is from uh the same designer is something i just mentioned a little bit ago you were asking if i had any more from that person i certainly do christian osb santa maria oh no we were talking about the uh you know that i have riverside and trails of chicago has this gone up what was it probably not no it's dropped a little bit it was 21 last year 19 the year before that which is fine it was 19. and in 2020 i guess or yeah it was 21. yeah anyway 33 it's still very high i haven't played in a while that's part of it i think the expansion for this is not as seamless as the ones for say five tribes uh you don't need the expansion i suppose the expansion is very different from the base game doesn't matter this game uses that similar ideas as avenue did in which you trigger this board in front of you with dice both your own i think those are the blue ones or common dice with the white ones and when you take a five it triggers everything in your five line you'll collect resources move up on some tracks try to ship goods all sorts of different things but it all comes together in a really interesting clean way this is a thinking euro game but it's not one that i find bogs me down and stuff i don't want to deal with and there's a lot of euro games like that the more of them that get made the more accepting it is or accept it i should say it is that they have more and more stuff in them and eventually i'm just like i'm dying under the weight of all these things you know this one is heavy but for me personally very manageable so yeah i really like this one santa maria solid game my 33. my number 33 has been on the list for five years it's moved up it was 56 last year one of the reasons it's moved up is because my wife enjoyed playing this with me and this has been on the list z list much longer he's been telling me to play it i finally got around to it about five years ago tar target targi target yeah i really like this game now oddly enough i think the expansion for it is fine it's like a sideway it's like playing turkey to a point you're kind of talking europe yeah sure that's what it feels like and it's fine i mean i like it too but i don't i i'm if you said you can't play the expansion i'm really happy with this base game because the cards the way they come out in that grid it's gonna be different every game it's never gonna be the same and i love the tension we've already talked about this on the top 100 it's been on the i think the people's choice um and it's likely on z's if it hasn't been it's going to be but i i really like this game it's it's one of my favorite two player games so target [Music] awesome well the people's 33 is another garfield game it's not shipwrights this time arkansas richard garfield architects scarfel this is architects of the west kingdom the gordon maze yeah so this is the one you were actually saying that you really wanted me to play as well i got to say though he has a lot of games in his top 100 for the people yeah yeah yeah any of them with all the people with all your work 20 workers this is the jail one okay it's also the quickest of them that was awesome mm-hmm so yeah architects of the west king you even played this one either all right and you never will i'll make sure it happens every time it comes out i'll be like i gotta work for what i'm doing what are you doing right now and every turn of mine will be just throwing a group of your people in jail that's it i love it that's the worst of the detriment of anything i'm doing because he has zero points roy has two right are you yeah as long as we're playing a two-player game it'd be fine that's true foiled again math um but yeah awesome to see even more of these games on here that is architects of the west kingdom the people's 33. my number 32 is down 20 spots still a rock solid game and a game that i still see get played all the time my number 32 is blood rage blood rage is uh you know what can you say about blood rage that hasn't been said already probably not a whole lot uh an absolute vikings it does something you can say about it it hasn't been said yeah it's an abstract two-player only game there you go it's boring it's all not true what is true about blood rage is that it really is essentially a drafting game the heart and soul of this game is built around the car drafting you know you are obviously going to be manipulating troops around a map and you're gonna be bringing out monsters that you have brought in but to me the the kind of magic of this game is getting to know those cards well sure drafting cards that you particularly enjoy working with and turning what everyone starts off the same and becoming asymmetric as the game goes along kind of building up your clan the way you wanted to utilizing a strategy you know maybe trying something different that you haven't tried before that's that's one of the things i like about blood is i don't feel like i approach this game the same any time i play it like sometimes i'm like do i want to try to pull off the loki strategy everyone kind of knows it's coming so am i the one to try it or do i wait till somebody else does someone's going to try it i almost never do no because i'm like someone's going to do it and i'll just fight against you yeah yeah do i go monster heavy do i go quest heavy because that honestly is one of my favorite ways to play it is to try to pull off a bunch of quests but it's hard to do what do you think is my favorite way to play your favorite way to play everybody and no i just got a monster yeah monster every time that's true that's one monster did i lose i did yes did you have a bunch of monsters i did a winner that's true yeah blood rage is still a a very very fun game it did yeah we've talked about it a lot that's why i don't know when i can't get a monster i think blood rage is another one of those games that is verging on that edge for me of like people who play a lot of puerto rico yeah yeah where it's like oh the loki strategy has a clear uh you know uh is that something that clearly defuses it and it's if you get this card in this card me and sam were playing it because we both have played the game so much i'm just like obviously sam's doing this we need to stop him oh no at that point i'm like i'm out you know what i mean dominion players are at that point uh like we said puerto rico and then blood rage if it's not on that list yeah it's about to be you know what i'll tell you what though i've enjoyed playing these games with people at cons and a group of people who've never played before you mentioned puerto rico i was like hey has everyone here played puerto rico one guy's like i have i was like okay um let's play a different game yeah yeah because i mean with a bunch of new people it's like a new discovery it's just fun it's not this sort of yeah exercise you know yeah no i guess um all that to say blood rage is garbage now my number 32 is a game that i think was on your list already much higher of course it was 18 two years ago 1856 oh no no no no it's not an 18x game uh it was 18 two years ago and then last year was 65. now it's back up to 32. but it's making up your mind i didn't organize this after i spit it back out so it's yinch you're coming around but i bet you this is not the highest one i think is this your favorite of the series i think so really again this is what my data tells me um i control the data i don't want the data to control me i let the data control me it's fun you know you got to give them control sometimes yeah inch is the highest it looks like the other one in the running would be um devon i don't like as much and czar is my second favorite you like we switch on that zara's my third i like devon second okay um this is there's no joke this is this is kind of a classic in abstract games but there's not that many new ones it's been out long enough now this is a classic yeah this is an a five in a row style game which is a very popular sub genre of abstracts in which you are going to be moving one of your rings you jump over over anything you want anything you jumped over gets flipped to the other side so you might be giving up your color or taking your opponents and you're just manipulating what you're able to do um every time you win a line of five make a line of five you remove those five and one of your rings from the board and that's the genius part of this game as you get closer to winning you get weaker on the board yes that is brilliant and though i mean he even wraps it up and like oh you have to take a ring and put it over here to mark you scored a point yes yeah he's like sure but also you need me to like remove a ring um so yeah i think din [ __ ] is just a really clever and not difficult to get into abstract game this this is smooth you can you can jump into this even if you're a little scared of like say chess or any other you know big abstract game so yeah 32. my number 32 was 33 last year and that was first year was on the list much better now i you know this is one of those games that i wonder if it's going to be forgotten but it's a work replacement game where you control how the worker placement spaces are and that's whistle mountain oh wow now this one has some negative stuff in the sense that it's called whistle mountain right after whistle stop there's nothing alike other than they both have whistles and i think the same artist did both boards yeah but this is a worker placement game with these airships and in the middle of the board you can see this picture eventually there's gonna be all kinds of machines and stuff put there and you'll put these where you place it everything that's next to you get and you activate the machines you're next to so you can build a spot that's beautiful and get you out of stuff and then z puts this guy there you know okay and i really like this it has so much variety every time i play this i get excited it's it's a very interesting game you get cool special powers it's it's fantastic yeah so i think scott caputo did whistle stop if i believe by himself and then luke laurie came in with him and and they did this but they're not similar in any way no in fact this game is called whistle mountain yeah and they they made up some they tried to fish steam whistles on the thing whistles are wild resources in this game that's the only thing yeah yeah so but man fantastic game yeah i'd like to try this one the good one awesome the people's number 32 is a game that if you like to shove a whole bunch of felines on a boat i love cats the best game from this company you know maybe we'll see but uh but i'm sorry i didn't realize your list was the title i am definitive i am i am the prince of game now he's the city of the thing i messed that up island of games i don't know go ahead sorry let's go yeah but yeah i mean i haven't played this one so but it's polyamidos where you're collecting different cats and trying to put them onto the board um i know it's very popular and it makes you say i love cats when you play it yeah there's pronounce it correctly the aisle of cats i love cats yeah i have not played this either uh there's a lot of polyamino games so itself from other polyamino games i think for a couple of reasons okay that maybe i'll talk about later maybe it won't we'll see oh wow the spoilers spoilers darth vader looks father i'm sorry actually dead people my number 31 can't do that spoilers man my number 31 is going to disappoint somebody at this table greatly unfortunately i feel bad about it because it is a game that is right i want to point out that we've all been very disappointed i'm getting to know mike's tastes and you know what um i i'm elated my number 31 is down 27 places well come on you why do you hate this suddenly wait it was not easy it was there were four last year well that's okay just settling in it is settling in and it's another game that is a victim of other games that i play for a similar experience now my number 31 sorry roy heroes she got me worried look no i mean roy and i are both big fans of this game and i still think he's a big fan of this game right you are now put up with it it's hot garbage no it is a game that is an asymmetric game troops on a map 4x game where you are doing all of those x's you're exploring you're expanding you're exploiting and exterminating right yes like you specifically do them in this game you absolutely specifically do them yeah and and it is again a game with remarkable table presence but it's very big it's very expensive um and it's tough to table and it's tough to teach that point where i just decided to not bring it on the cruise right roy and camilla just told me she really wants to play it so i'm like yeah i'm not saying it's just a thing i'm sure the best person on the planet to teach this game is at this table and i mean that over the designers is a remarkably good teacher of this game if you do get a chance to you've never played it and you have a chance to be taught by roy that's going to be your best your best way to do it it's tough to teach if you're not so familiar with it and it's tough to learn because every group is social i'm going to pay two people i'm going to have two people very nice people come up and ask him simultaneously to teach him here's what energy and last light and they're both gonna say they only have three hours and he'll do it and they have to and then i'll play last night with him three times a year he'll be able to do it anyway it is a uh i guess i i i did that i'm sorry it's still a game i hold in high esteem even though it has dropped quite a bit my number 31 is heroes of land aaron all right well my number 31 is going to disappoint some people who got into gaming in the early 90s okay and haven't really moved on okay that's me i guess that counts me too this has been this is one like much like something like carcassonne this is not that it's one of those games i've played for a long time and i still yes feel fondly about alhambra or alhambra uh it's been as apparently it's been all over the map here it looks like i wrote 34 and maybe 47 or 97 i don't know it's been in my top 100 a lot i i think it hasn't fallen off though it moves around in there this is disappointing usually one of my go-to oh you haven't really played too many games and you are the ones you are familiar with are the ones where you money is sort of an important part of it i.e monopoly something like that this is one i sometimes go to you know you're buying you're making money by just taking it which is great or you're buying parts chunks you know buildings for your city and you pay money for that um that's that's the core sort of idea that's easy to understand for just about anybody you know there's no highfalutin concept here there isn't some sort of backwards thing you need to understand that is like a gamers only thing and so that's a big part of it and then it's just area majority or i don't know if you call it that you want to have more of the different kinds of buildings than other people when the scoring rolls around that's that's the gist of it there's a billion expansions for it i'm exaggerating slightly um and then a lot of you know interesting things of course that you can try to pull off there's this wall around the outside you're trying to score the longest wall to protect your city a couple of other things but yeah i just this is now been around long enough for me to probably start for it to start sort of being nostalgic almost you know but but i still really have a soft spot for it i i and i enjoy the game it's not that this doesn't get played i played this in 2021 so there you go 31 alambra alhambra my number 31 was new to the list last year it was at 84. it's now up to 31. and this is a game that i was behind the curve at the dice hour studios everyone played it but me for a while and i eventually got around to and it was one of those games everyone's like this is great you'll love it and i was like uh well i'll play when i feel like not that i anyhow it's already it's a crossover z it's already been high on your list this game is all about colors and drafting and i love it and that's hedara every time i play this i get i get more excited about it it feels people compared to the seven wonders which i don't think it is but this game feels like it's the combos i i almost every card of the once you get past the base cards they're almost all different and the purple ones are very difficult this is actually the cards are kind of like citadels where they're all this like you know yellow cards are yellow cards and blue cards are blue cards but then there's like one suit and it happens to also be purple in citadels which has special ability sure but even so some of the yellow cards might have a red token on them too yeah but all that means is you now have limited like you can push up that track or whatever yeah help each other and which track you decide to push up they're all good they all feel equally good you want to do it all right i really though last time i played this i did so well no but i mean i i just this game is that's not even a humble brag that's a bragging right that's a bragging right if i'm gonna call this baby i'm gonna do that go ahead let's give people another gift no no shoulder waggle i'm sorry for the last one you saw that right i did it that was pretty good that's pretty good i'm lost fantastic game this one is definitely gone and out the window but it's also not i don't think rare you could probably find a copy of it um it's in the dickstart library but i really like it what do you think i don't know i just don't think it did it again sometimes i think the name of a game matters in the cover and the they both matter although i actually like the cover i have that i have the colorful color he hates yeah but i just like splashed the color i do i think it's a back cover all right hadar awesome the people's choice number 31 this is we've talked about vikings a lot today this is another viking game of biker worker placement game called champions of midgard this is a game about going out there getting a bunch of viking dice and trying to collect food to go on voyages to fight monsters whose list was this on because we talked about this already mine was your list yes it was just on tom's list last time um but yeah definitely a super popular game um where you're building up those dice and putting up your viking like horde to go attack these different monsters to gain glory and victory points the expansions definitely elevated this which i'll talk about yesterday yeah well and it's cool to just try to like get the combos of stuff to be able to gain the points for this game this game has had like amazing staying power and i'm surprised that it's this high on the list but people really enjoy it this is one of my go-to games to teach you like feel the same way i'm surprised this is clinging on yeah yeah i'm also surprised that this is more popular than raiders yeah i mean it's just i think there's something fun different games that was earlier right that matters mean again that's true i think people just have that excitement of chucking the dice to fight the monsters and figure out how to mitigate that and i mean there's just something exciting about this game i think the best way to mitigate it is by the expansion by the valhalla expansion yeah that's really how you do it when i design a game there will be mechanisms in there that are hot garbage but you can fix them that's right that's coming i'm working on it it's a legacy game called hot garbage it's called stinker wasn't there a game called hot garbage we laughed about it called keep buying that's the end of another one of these top 10 in our top 100s of all time a couple things of note one in at three o'clock in 90 minutes we'll be doing shoots and marbles come back and see some marbles race for the championship of well marvel world um tomorrow we'll be back again with some more of this um we're getting higher and hotter pride is higher no that sounds wrong the numbers are getting better better and better come back you'll cry you'll laugh you'll learn number 27. then uh finally if for some reason you have not yet backed your dice out kickstarter there's like three days left please please do it come on you wanna anyway we appreciate all of you yes until next time i'm tom vassell i'm roy kennedy i'm mike delecio i'm z garcia have fun i don't know something to say [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
