good evening everyone this is Patrick Stewart saying welcome to the Graham Norton Show [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's a great guest to be tonight I tell you that soap will be hotter than a special place in hell it's coming off one day there is GU Council President Donald Tusk caused outrage outrage rights act when he wondered what the special place in hell would look like for people who promote it Briggs it without a plan well since you asked Donald I think I might go back this far and politicians called Donald yes his State of the Union speech this week now I'm not saying it wasn't riveting but here was the audience that's Melania one though there were whoops and applause from the Democratic congresswoman there they are all dressed in white now poor Donald he thought they were applauding him when really he should know that when a woman dresses in white is in fact code for I hate Trump hey good news though from fans it was announced he'll be making a second visit to Britain in December oh what a lovely Christmas treat the war family once again be involved in fact the Queen has already organized a driver to pick Trump up from the airport [Applause] he's the BAFTA and Golden Globe winning star of the office extras and Eric he's here to tell us about his new sitcom afterlife always a pleasure to welcome mr. Ricky Gervais [Applause] he's the British saunas like Love Actually kinky boots and dr. strange and was Oscar nominated for twelve years of slave now he brings us the inspiring true story of the boy who harnessed the wind please welcome [Applause] this golden girl winning actress has saw two films I boys the hood Jerry Maguire an enemy of the state now she's oscar-nominated for her role in if Beale Street could talk welcome was very first time Regina King [Applause] and this stops agent steam rose to fame in star trek it would alter worldwide movie success with the x-men franchise now he's in the fantasy epic the cave who would be king welcome back so Patrick Stewart [Applause] [Music] welcome all well yes let's see a fist bump very often on the couch nice nice to see if to tell I'm trying to before you ever be on the show before and we know you just met hello welcome now and this is such an exciting time in your life Virginia King X you're on one of those roles you're nominated for every ward going nominee for the Oscar and you're you're winning you do yeah Ricky and Patrick you obviously know each other you work together on extras you didn't think it was Ricky trying to contact you it is true yeah I had a friend who was very good at doing a person Asians voices and I was in my local supermarket down in Burma Z you know keeping it real my phone rang and I said yeah and this boy said ah perfect it's Ricky Ricky and I said Ricky Ricky's raised yeah listen we're doing this new show and maybe you've heard it and he pitched extras to me and he convinced me that I was not speaking to my friend the impersonator he really was Ricky Gervais now I've never asked for this Ricky but was that the customary way with which you approach doctor yeah every time I asked every person personally to be in it and did you make sure they were in the supermarket no I did I thought you're in a play at the time no I was in the Berman's of super mod it's still the record for extras for the most takes two grown men just giggling just giggling every time he said knickers or something how many takes I think it was about 45 but it was just and it just got worse and then you see the crew sort of not laughing anymore and then I just couldn't do it it was such a silly scene it's him pitching me an idea we've got the clip watch watch the big here's a reminder he's writing the theme in my film I play a man who controls the world with his mind right passage to and walking along and I see this beautiful girl and I think I'd like to see her naked and so all her clothes fall off all her clothes fall off hmm yes and she's scrambling around to get them back on again but even before she can get her knickers on I've seen everything no it's not what would happen you know these things were possible what's the story there what's there well I do other stuff like I'm riding my bike in the park and this policewoman says oh you can't ride your bike on the grass and I go I don't know and their uniform falls off I'm just trying to cover up but I've seen everything anyway I get on the grass right lots of good stuff to talk about tonight let's start with Regina King this is your time your Oscar noted for the role of Sharon rivers in a field streaker talk which is out now and this is the latest Barry Jenkins who obviously won the Oscar eventually for moon yeah but now it's James Baldwin novel so tell us about who are you what's the story it's a love story about these this young couple Titian Fani Tisha's my daughter and Fani is accused of raping someone a crime he didn't commit and you see this family how they get through it and it's although it's a love story around the two of them you get to see the love between a husband and wife the father and daughter two friends the father and one of his friends so it's a universal love story but um it's quite beautiful it's lyrical you say but one of those stories that you know even as you describe it now how people are thinking it's it's beautiful you see it is it's the way something about the way it's all I know what are the way the camera moves the way he just kind of sits there makes you up but the eye brings the audience in and sometimes I've had people come and they say I was just so uncomfortable I felt like I was invading on someone's a private space but I couldn't look away yeah well we've got a clip from one of those sorts of scenes this is you confronting the the family of your pregnant daughter's boyfriend yes yes a child who's coming it's a grandchild I don't understand you it's your grandchild what difference does it make how it gets here the child got nothing to do with that ain't none of us got nothing to do with that did you [ __ ] take your [ __ ] with you [Applause] [Music] in the entire movie big get your [ __ ] because the first take that we did they forgot their coats so as most of you guys know keep going until they say action so Barry didn't say action so I said get your [ __ ] yeah I'm proud to have the only answer and you based it on kind of make jokes in your own family your mom your grandmother yes my mom like my grandmother they're both those women that in their communities my grandmother when she was alive in her church was always the woman that people felt she nurtured them you know she had several kids several people that just wanted Loretta to love on them because they knew that if she had her gave them her approval or just bless them with a conversation he just would feel better and Sharon read like that to me when I read the script and when I read the book so I just tapped into those two beautiful women and one of this beautiful woman your mother she's got the plus one for the Oscars oh yes absolutely first time of course mom is going to and you've just on that lunch that nominees lunch the Oscar nominee luncheon is there a lunch do you eat yes you do oh yes you do and the dessert was delicious it was the best part of the lunch but it's um it's actually a really wonderful event because they're smart to put only one actor at the table so they have people from each kettle you know well no I actually I missed the lunch I was working yeah so I missed that the most fun I've never mr. Lundy we've got the picture they take a picture whenever they do this they huge picture of you all you can't even find me I'm sure oh I did earlier there you are yeah yeah and I always thought was just a bun fight to find a place to stand but they printed they tell you where to stand they tell you where to stand and you know you you stand for the introduction of every person so we're there clapping you've you've been no ma'am didn't even look at her chance hear about but now but the thing is after the gonna grab you were talking about you only been on shows like this talking about a how you put this mad crush on Sam Elliott I do and but now he knows so there he is he's been placed quite far away from they made sure I win the costume at that luncheon does he acknowledged that he knows that you of course he does he's a lovely man yes okay yeah it wasn't awkward is it the voice everything this whole experience to the whole yeah from the lunch everything you missed a lot miss for lunch but is it fun or is it just it's I mean it's it's exhausting yeah it can be fun it has definite highlights you know I'm in being the after party the after parties are the Oscars win or lose them they're great they're the best you know I was at the I was I took my mom to the whole thing as well and I remember being at the after-party and looking just it was a Madonna had a party oh yes and and I looked over at one point and I just saw my mum in a very deep conversation with John Travolta well that's probably the most surreal I wonder what they're talking about they're very intense you know I never really got to the bottom of what they were talking about but yeah that's weird but of course Ricky you famously became friends with your kind of musical hero two extras Oh David Bowie yeah yeah he was my hero for music for about 25 years and yeah then I I met him and I invited him to do extras and he said yes just incredible i co-wrote a song with him that the song me singing extras and I am I sent in the lyrics and I called him up and I said you get the lyrics he went yeah I said them yeah I said can you give me some sort of like retro like life on Mars and he went yeah I just knock off a quick [ __ ] life on Mars [Laughter] I'll do that amazing it was amazing to the end just incredible an artist to the end and kept putting out material right to the end it was incredible did you just get in touch because of extras who you were friends anyway no well the first time I met him I was sort of newly famous and I was invited to one of those things at the BBC like the office had just come out I think on DVD the first year and I was about about Greg Dyke it was the Director General then and then we went to watch David Bowie with a few other people and then after Greg Dyke come up to me said oh you're a big Barry fan line I said yeah I love him which they come and meet him and I went really yeah come on cover me wait don't write and there's me and Jane and Greg Dyke walking to me down by and on the way we went Salman Salman Rushdie joined us we went that day by he was very polite he didn't know I was and I remember the next day I was in the pub with my mate and he said what to do last night and I went noting an email from David Bowie saying so I watched the office what do I do now and we sort of became pen pals I invited directors then he invited me to play a benefit in New York my first New York gig at Madison Square Garden and he introduced me and the crowd didn't know through that and they went crazy and he just came out with a harmonica and went shabby little loser it was it was amazing and that was his last live appearance that's extraordinary amazing now Sir Patrick Stewart brings us the kid who would be king now this opens next Friday the 15th February it's kind of a new take on the King Arthur story reading it is the the the nation is in trouble it's it's a documentary a young Merlin arrives unclothed this is not me [Laughter] they they have come down to residential area somewhere in South London and there are these four kids and they all go to this local comprehensive and this young man tells them that they have been chosen one of them is chosen because he is King Arthur if he can pull the sword from the stone and there sir Bedevere and there's Lancelot and so forth and you sir you finally get to play a wizard at last you know it had been bothering me for a long time you know that there's Michael Gambon who's a friend and and there's Ian McKellan who was a Buddhist of course last time yes who's a good friend and they're playing these wonderful roles of wizards and I I mean look at me I mean did you ever see a better object you scream wizard yes also you share the role there you that you a smooth Angus Emory and then Angus Emory he's the young Bert but you're both young cuz Merlin was living backwards of course in the legend and so we see both of them we see the young one and the somewhat aged one this is basically just kind of a taster of what the films like a true king is braver than noble you must choose what you stand for what if it's the sword in the stone I'm supposed to be an old master an ingenious disguise do you think you will make excellent knights of the round table an evil army will rise from the dead and you must stop them you're a king Alexander you need to raise an army boom join us this is instead of lessons today [Applause] [Applause] what did you drive Mario Kart Christmas Day that's was exhausting [Applause] that's the kid King that's out on the 15th now recently you have been talking about the jean-luc Picard is coming back is this right on telly or is it coming back to the movies shopping yeah it's I can't quite fully take it on board because I'm not only reviving jean-luc Picard but I'm also co-executive producer all hello I've never done before.i and it sounds quite easy it's not the word executive and co so and you're the famous one so the other one we do all the work yeah we're reviving a Picard story it's exactly 19 years in the future which was how time has passed since the last time I put on my spacesuit maybe not Lord it has been Wow I mean for the television series yeah yeah interview about when you went for when you I think was after you were cast they had a different vision of jean-luc Picard that he wasn't gonna be the way he turned out to be well yeah they they thought he should be French did you do it French I did a recording a taping which must be somewhere in the vaults of Panama pictures where we experimented with the French accent would you like to hear a sample okay [Laughter] [Applause] [Applause] you are bringing us the boy who harnessed the wind and it's in selected cinemas from every 30 seconds streams on Netflix will March the first and and that this is you you're in it you wrote the screenplay you directed it yeah no it's it's been an extraordinary experience you know I read the book about 10 years ago the boy harnessed the wind the story of William can qualm be' who was experienced when he was about 13 in 2001 2002 was experiencing with his family and community of famine in Malawi a famine hit that community in the area of Malawi and and he was taken out of school because school in secondary school isn't free in Malawi so his family took him out of school and they all sort of knuckled down preparing for the worst is this this event sort of arrived and and he started sneaking into the school and he found a textbook called using energy and on the front of it was a wind turbine like a windmill and so going into the local junkyards you know started picking up sort of scraps of metal and stuff and started to put together a women are in order to generate electricity to hopefully irrigate the land through a water pump so I was so inspired by his story and it's so full of hope and you know beauty and it's an incredible tale and so I I decided to adapt it and direct it and be in it and go to Malawi and shoot it and and what stage then decide to complicate things brought a lot of movies in a very specific local dialect it's in Turkey were the language of Malawi which is about about half the film is in into chewer which was a decision that I kind of took quite early in the process because I wanted to feel like a really authentic experience for the audience to sort of just sort have this at a teleportation into this into this space into this beautiful place and but it did require me learning to Chua and several members of the of the car he knows French before we see the clip we must just talk about the boy who plays the boy who harnessed the wind yes well who plays William yeah because he is I mean it's for nominal phenomenal actor you know he was able to do very little and communicate all of these different emotions and it took me personally years before I was able to kind of you know understand film acting and sort of being slightly more minimal and he just sort of had it instantly yeah he's a wonderful actor well this is a clip this is you preparing him for his first day at school how many in Llanelli me anata WA no Penelope marry Kody a kulu kulu Sankat i could see was the kazakh ma an elitist yaki how many on katakuriko telegenic chats a chats Angela call a command to Allah commands a I'm otaku Pittacus I am upon where denies that I am Denali would you park on being symptomatic yes sir it is no reasonable indeed upon that don't you [Music] did you I mean do you just learn what you had to say phonetically or did you actually learn how to speak well I started learning the language you know and then when we got to Malawi I just sort of knuckle down and to the actual what I was gonna say we had a great translator in the UK sense in Canberra who was who did all the translations here and then there were a couple of people in Malawi as well that I was working with and the rest of the cast were working with including Maxwell who also doesn't speak to Chua and so he was learning to cheer as well and English isn't his first language either so it was my first film right it was American movie I wasn't meant to be an American and I said put a line in these from reading on top of acting right and directing it's good yeah I know you're like yeah you must be maybe it's not a real language and then put some time I'm not learning all of this [Laughter] [Applause] premiere in Malawi is amazing learn the language while you're here we must also mention a big movie event this year the live-action Lion King which you are in oh yeah another day in your scar that's true yeah and now the word on the street but I don't know is that scar it doesn't sing in this aura does sing in this you play scar right that's do you remember singing at any point I can neither confirm nor deny do live action in you're playing a lion how is it live-action like you're playing a lion acting or is it it's not just you with a lion wig on [Applause] series of growls I think he's hungry but we know you can say him because of course we heard you singing as Lola in kinky boots yes there you are singing and apparently you kept the kinky boots now they're not I don't know if they're the actual original worst edition kinky boots but I have a pair of them now which I lost for for a while now I'm interested in this story how did you lose them I took them off at a party and I lost them it does have a good party one that you went in those boots uncomfortable I took them off at a certain point and and then I was like were those boots and I didn't see them for about a decade until a friend of mine was moving stuff out of her out of her house and and came across a box and the boots were in them so she called me up to say I have the boots she stole those boot I'm not saying that you're saying ten years almond why did I steal those we're them oh let him have them back and now you're delighted jesus 'if weirdly what are the chance of this kicking you have also played a drag queen Miss Congeniality - yeah yeah there you are so you were playing a Tina Turner impersonator Tina Turner impersonator yes but you want to be a man planning a team yeah yeah so I'm playing a drag queen going deep going yeah taking a deep dive and I don't like the Malawi this yeah as luck would have it Patrick Stewart has also done drag how beautiful that is actually close-up is beautiful that's amazing that's it [Laughter] [Music] but now you have a drag named of you oh yeah patty loose - have you ever done back no never go back oh come on you save a drug that what is this what what is this [Applause] around the world digging a bath pick from that like in norway i wear a viking helmet are in Canada I wear moose antlers and that was Copenhagen of course the home of Little Mermaid so yeah so shopping for that I thought is a good way to told me that and the guy in the shop that was costume shop recognized me so I lost my bottle so I said to Jane you've got a buyer right so Jane went up and said I want looking for a mermaid outfit and he said is it for you so she went yes but bigger he was looking I'm sort of like hiding in it that's good okay right and see what that and then he was she paid for it and he went someone's gonna have a good weekend again now yeah a year ha after humanity went on them Netflix I've been doing warm-ups I'm still doing warm-ups but um I'm nearly ready to do another world tour and it's called um super nature so I'll be rolling those gigs out and I'll gig for about probably a year and a half and what's the concept this time the concept is called super nature for two reasons I sort of debunk the supernatural I say I don't believe in the supernatural I think anything is that exists is by definition part of nature and you know is explainable and also nature is super enough and I say we don't need angels and unicorns you know we've got the octopus eight legs nine brains three hearts and a beak I mean the duck-billed platypus right it's a monitoring when scientists first discovered the duckbill platypus they thought it was a hoax because it produces eggs and milk it could make its own custard it's about human nature I talk about human nature and you know my life I took one of a family always I think they're the personal stories are the best when you when you you know when you in a straight a point with and I'll give you an example and I love doing that so it's er it's sort of like a you know an hour so stories really yeah and people don't want to leave the house they can see Ricky in his new sitcom afterlife streaming Netflix from 8th of March and this begins we read your character Tony's at the lowest ebbs anyone can be at it hits the ground you see Tony watching a video diary his wife has left him a secret video and she's obviously going through chemotherapy and she says if you're watching this I'm not around I couldn't say this to your face but you're lovely and and I'm but you're [ __ ] useless the guides you note remember to change the soul in the dishwasher that's in the garage the garage is the big thing on the side of the house and you know you see these in them and basically he's deep depression and he was going to commit suicide but the dog was hungry so and then that gives him long enough to think okay if I'm gonna do this living thing I'm gonna do and say whatever I want from now I'm gonna punish the world I'm not scared about it I've got nothing to lose so he just goes out and it's like one last adventure before and he treats it like a superpower because he thinks I'm gonna do what I want and then I can always be with her and then the other part of the show is your father as dementia yes so it's it's guy everything's gone wrong I had the perfect life I love my wife I mucked around and then I've got a job I don't like I work for a local paper with with ridiculous stories I have to deal with and my dad's got dementia and I have to visit him every day and I'm grumpy and the nurse hates me cause I'm grumpy but I think we've got a clip where we sort of bond down the line because my dad says funny things because he doesn't know what he's saying so and it's got um my wife is my dead wife is Carrie godly Mona was in there it's got ashley Jensen David Bradley Penelope will and Roshan Connor II it's just got that yeah it's amazing huh that's amazing yeah well this is this is the tip you just mentioned David Rada your dad Asha Jenson the nurse yeah about your dad you got sick quite a few people today didn't you Ray oh well he told ireenie Tindall they would like to do her from behind wasn't behind well I don't really think that's the issue humpy accused Charlie Willis of sucking off Elton John house Charlie Willis 89 anything else please say yes yeah he told Winston Freeman that he has the [ __ ] of a [ __ ] [Applause] you shouldn't even say [ __ ] dad [Music] [Applause] very good okay it is time for music at this man has to top an album I'll start that again yeah yeah bad reading unbelievable I know how long have you been doing this care anymore they do you know the money just rolls it exactly I don't think you should cut it out I think the people should know that I can't read yeah well the brave I think to continue this fight just bite nothing over there you carry on is it because you can't see and you won't wear glasses cuz you're vain no no I can't see that right right right it's time music this band has two top term albums now I see [Applause] right it's time music this man has to top ten albums and a world tour under his belt and it's always a joy to have him sing for us performing candlelight please welcome Jax amaretti [Applause] [Music] play with me do what you want with me you won't see me putting up a fight look at me look what you've done to me never let me go after today this feeling [Music] how I like to see you say my name in the dance it's kinda say come in kiss before Longo's girl [Music] yes it's had the same it's got the same promise me you'll wake up next to me a lifetime forever and a day stay with me don't let up man take from us the love we had this fear [Music] to see you say my name it's not per se so coming kiss me before the Sun Goes Down [Music] yes the same it's not the same [Music] it's not the same [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] candlelight is how I like to see you say my name yes it's not the same [Music] kiss me yes yeah it's not the same [Music] see you say my name yes the same it's not the same the first person to say that that song does sound very bondi no you you're not we keep getting that which I'm very flattered by but that wasn't my intent it wasn't it no I was trying to go sort of Mediterranean in your muddy corner but I'll take a bond theme any day of it well no because it sounds like an audition for a bomb I'll take it yeah no thanks thank you very much exit and now a little bird tells me you are that little bird that that you and symmetric are neighbors yeah you're aware of this I hope but I don't know any details no I I'm about sort of three fields its neighbors we live in the countryside I live in this beautiful part of England Oxfordshire which I moved to about three years ago and so there's like fields between us rather than houses I'd be big for you about three huge fields I mean when I say neighbors I'm kind of glamorizing the fact that I'm about a 15 minute drive I'm just saying that if we have dinner at your place all I got to do is hike across a field yeah that's simple can we make a deal can we just connect and somehow I would love that yeah but obviously love that there's not a lot that happens where we live what's going on don't invite him he's in a bow Jackson ready you are going on tour and it's a big you you're doing the night at Wembley theory yeah we're doing one of the arena yeah we're very proud of yeah thank you much deserved as well it's gonna be the last show of our sort of European and UK tour and it's it's still I sort of wake up in another night in a panic at the idea of having to you know put on a show in the arena but I'm very proud I'm very proud of my band in my crew because we got there we didn't get to the easy way so I'm very happy and very honored but you got there in the end we're under yeah thank you so much had his little girl on the back of his bike and we couldn't believe it we stopped to the bottom of the hill thought we'd better go turn round and go back up and check it was then sure enough it was and I never know what to say to people like that and but Tom really wanted a photo so I said to David I'm really really sorry but I know you're with your family but can we just have a quick photo and he was absolutely charming he took his sunglasses off shook my hand and had a great photo it's on and then at that point I noticed there was this teenage boy circling around us on his mountain bike staring at us and I thought oh no he's realized this the beckham's and I said oi I said can you not go and tell everyone in the part that the beckham's are here because you'll ruin their family day and David turned to me and he said mate that's my son [Applause] [Music] you know he's our neighbor now yeah he lives in the neighborhood across to the oh I thought you just remember that he was your
