Neil Armstrong in first man it is a warm welcome back to Ryan stars are the new remake of a star is born' world as broader tick films like The Hangover and still early silver linings playbook the other is quite simply one of the biggest music icons on the planet please welcome Bradley Cooper and Lady gaga [Applause] - it's very nice of you don't say Saturday thank you and I go did you notice some very good frock wrangling from Bradley Cooper's who came in even got a lot of red carpets following ad gaga with the depends you know you you do we're a lot of different outfits so you have to a lot of train work at oh do you want some yeah oh do you want a second cup no I'll say you sure we could stretch for that well I'm you're happy with your water situation here yeah I'm feeling a little ashamed of my choice I don't know star to share a coffee with lots talk about sight hey you guys Udrih London premiere this week yeah just now just yesterday just yesterday [Applause] three about a very relaxed Friday just watching daytime TV [Applause] meanwhile Doctor Who Doctor Who it's a global franchise global where do they choose to have the world launch Sheffield it was it was a glorious day it might as well up in LA I've been very warmly received from Y without lo Yorkshire people they're gay I felt very at home it was wonderful that you you're not from chef where were you from it's called oh it's pips and for the town is had a field yes and the village is called skelemans op scale man thought there's a special name for people from the scale methought which I don't understand I'm allowed to say this out because this goes out past when kids have gone to bed yeah it goes out tomorrow so um the name for me would be affectionately referred to as are you a shot glass yeah let miss Schatz access chat beats this shot everywhere skalman pops really long and but then it's it's to do with I really don't remember and the specifics but hopefully you know this is the vague story but I think in the olden days there was a quarry and the local trade was people smashing slate and so they were shatters and so then you were if you from the village and the workers lived in the village you're a shatter and then now are the many years later you're from Shack realize it and my boyfriend the time now husband Jews from Tucson could go out a way key transition Shack see pictures opening oh my god welcome to the family Tucson Arizona tonight a star is born opens everywhere on October the 3rd starring Bradley and Lady Gaga and also directed by Bradley Cooper so it's a big deal because it's it's a story that I think you know people under 50 you know they didn't see isand or Kris Kristofferson or you know so it's a fresh story and if people haven't seen it tell us about the story well you know it's really not like any of the other versions in the sense that these characters are completely different than the other ones Jackson made the character that I play is a rock star who is successful the other ones you know his fame is dwindling this guy can tour and it's just the reality of today you know you could tour and have a can and a library of songs and you can make money so you die and he also doesn't worry about being eclipsed by another person fame is not something he thinks about and she plays and not the aunjanue character that's always there she's 31 years old and she's bitter because I'm not bitter resigned herself to I don't want to talk about your character without you know to you know singing covers and she's an incredible songwriter because we wanted to tell a story about finding your voice out here in this world and how hard that is especially when people are telling you what you are and who you're supposed to be and what you can't do and I also really wanted to tell a love story like what happens when two people actually really love each other and it's really pure and powerful and even with that how hard it's to endure in this life and how much convincing did you take lady gaga to do this cuz it's a big leap it took no convincing on my part I mean he came over to my house and we had a wonderful time together I mean as soon as he came in we're both from the East Coast and we're both italian-american so I was like heating up or pasta from the night before in the kitchen on the frying pan we were eating on the patio talking about life and family and then he wanted to sing with me song by Creedence Clearwater Revival midnight special so I was playing it on the piano and he started to sing and I was like oh my gosh Bradley your voice I was blown away by him I mean he just he sings from his soul he sings from his gut and when he sings he's a storyteller and I was just so moved by his passion you know for for that for music and for this film and quite frankly it was him that had to convince other people to have me in the movie not anyone trying to convince me I mean he really fought for me and you can have a hundred people in the room that are watching you and 99 don't believe in you and one does and that was him so you know well this is how what you were saying about his singing we can hear his singing now because this is Bradley singing over a taster of the movie a star is born [Music] [Applause] vocals live yeah Wow we had no choice because the songs are it's not like we have this little break it's a lot like lala land we're like the songs are part of the character of the film so so you know it's not like you take this little sojourn and the other thing that is amazing about this movies I don't think I've ever seen a film that puts the audience on stage yeah in this like I never got that thing right what it must be like to play one oh yeah that's it and that's presumably cuz it's all real I'm glad you feel that way because that was the whole point that was one of the first things I thought of I want to have a completely subjective eye it was just based on I the first time I never experienced that was at a Metallica concert and I was behind the drum kit and I remember seeing Mars Oelrichs sweat in the back of his neck while also seeing the scope in Yankee Stadium and I thought well this is a great composition and and that was and that was where the idea was born and then we just adhered to it but the best was Glastonbury I got to go to on Glastonbury and that was like and they couldn't hear the music yeah yeah only the first five rows cuz we couldn't play it through the PA because you can't that the songs can't get out so and then so there's you can hear that you could hear it then the monitors because you needed to hear what your voice but so that sort of like 15 rows back everybody's like what is happening lose that crap and I didn't know what you know you never knew what was gonna happen you know they were gonna throw bottles at especially Glastonbury yeah yeah I don't know ball coming towards you that was Kristofferson yes so just you know and so many things are luck Kris Kristofferson happened to be playing this summer and we were shooting the movie and he came on set and I asked his wife is there any way I can make a music movie with alkyl Aston Barry it is you know it is a rite of passage for any musician and and I knew Nick and Emily who run it because I go every year and I asked him he said well it's you complain to somebody set will let you go and Christopherson allowed us to do it and me and Maddie Latika cinematographer and Steve Morrow we flew to England and we went and did it but the best part was after I sang this song I said ladies and gentlemen mr. Chris Christopherson and then I turned and he just sort of walked past me and I thought I'm never gonna forget that yeah it was amazing and joy you've got a full circle last ride she also visited the set yes yes that that was incredible I mean I I think I held my breath for 10 minutes while she was there I mean she is lovely and you know she's just an incredible woman and that the truth is is throughout her whole career she really had a hand in every single detail and I really admire that about her and when she came on set she was so lovely and so yeah warm to all of us and she washed a little bit of the you know earlier edits of the film and it was it was spectacular and we've got a great picture of the two of you together it's like diva squares Oh was that before that's before before yes that's the first time you met her right yeah yeah we had had dinner together at her house yeah of course you had because how does this story resonate with you lady gaga go because you did want to be a star from very little ID how old are you in this this looks like someone potentially is my attempt at Michelle Pfeiffer how old are you I think I must be 10 but does it looks like a lady Gaga impersonator looks like a girl I'm being Lady gaga for Halloween usual to be Lady Gaga young stars how old are you here Bradlee shave the beard off a few years off me I don't know I think I was my birthday I think maybe three or something how does the picture get out in the world how do we know what my mom sends pictures out all here's a great picture this is Jodie Jodie Whittaker I don't know when this was but we're you going for an 80s pop star look I think here you are oh joy skies at the bottom you can't quite see for that but I've got tips and they match the pink stripe I'm up toast yes you can see out of it hey oh good I mean it was the alarm so I was I was just method we like a really young aerobics instructor take it away from me Ryan you do have a connection I've got a weird intro to show business via widget your uncle I believe yeah that's right so he living with you yes did you walk into the room once I walked into the room once and he was be dazzling a sequined white jumpsuit and he and he said that he was gonna be Elvis for a little while and and you know what I'd like to help what do you need me to do so I became his head of security and she got my whole family in on the act my mother was a backup singer and honestly it was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen no no he yeah he I mean what I admired about what he was doing was that he looked nothing like Elvis you know he didn't attempt to he had a mustache and very little hair but my god he just he just became him and you know he would end every show with suspicious minds and he would get on his knees and and and often with tears in his eyes he would he would sing to some imaginary woman and beg her not to leave and we were transported from this mall in my small town Ontario to to to that I imagine it was a kitchen and she was trying to leave and we were just in that moment every night and it was it was incredible and and and honestly one of the best like acting lessons I've ever I wasn't gonna Pelt out with those sequins over you at when you were doing security I want to say six tiny guns special there's no photo no I think I painted a picture yeah young Ryan picture tonight tease Ryan Gosling play Neil Armstrong in first man it opens on the 12th of October and it's not just the story we think we're going to see of the journey to the moon it is the story of a family really going through that whole thing yeah I you know when I was a kid I think human spaceflight had sort of become commonplace and it had this gilded image of that it was predetermined to be a success and we were always going to get there and Damien Chazelle the director of lala land when I when I first met with him he he sort of started to tell me the real story and and you know what you learn is that this is you know this was not this could have gone wrong at any point and it's really a story of great sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of people and sacrifice of human life and you know resources and and at the heart of it there's this family the Armstrongs and they were enduring like an incredible amount of of grief and loss and and somehow battled that and and and kept to focus on on achieving this extraordinary thing of putting a human being on the moon and the pressures are playing a real person you know there's the looking right the sounding right but this has that added thing of that one incredibly iconic line which line is that hangover you hole filming were you thinking oh today's the day I'm gonna have to say that yeah you can put it to the back of your mind no it was there well I think an interesting thing about Neil is that you know he by all accounts he didn't think about what he was going to say you know he was just focused on landing safely and he said that if if they did that he would then think about what what to say and I think that line is really it's it's one of the most famous things ever said and and and not just because of the context it was said but also there's you have to really think about who would say something like that and it's such a it's such a beautiful thing to say and a meal with somebody who saw you know he could see a giant leap in one small step you know and he could do it you know just casually in that way you know he so I tried not to think about it too much because I tried to sort of pull a page out of Neil's playbook and just yeah and then we gotta keep this is you as Neil Armstrong and this is you as a dad trying to prepare your son's for the idea of daddy going to the moon right Jimmy that's what you didn't say when you get onto the moon well we're not sure we're gonna get on to the moon yeah a lot of things have to go right before that happens do you think you're coming back we have a real confidence in the mission and there are some risks but we have every intention of coming back but you want not but we should take there it's the family drama over there is a lot of in space as well and being an astronaut preparing to go to space zoom do you have to prepare to be an astronaut to go to space so you were to do all this stuff in the film like that weird whirligig thing there multi-axis trainer that looks horrible yeah I don't remember much I just remember the directors saying more spinning is kind of a blank cuz are you just in it or do you control it in some way no you don't control it oh can you just eat it yeah feeling did you get sick a lot it was very hard to complain because the director went through such lengths to make sure this was authentic I mean incredible amount of detail into making these capsules you know almost exactly as they were and we had you know technicians who were involved in these missions on set every day and anytime you thought about complaining you you know you would go to the monitor and somebody you know some astronaut you would say well you know Ryan when I went to the moon just talking and you slowly forget about what it was that was bothering you but you decided you were garden to learn how to fly because you know I'm strong enough playing this right yeah how did that go you know Neil could fly before he could drive he he grew up washing planes as a kid so he could pay for lessons and flight was just you know so important to him so I thought oh I'll learn how to fly and you know you always hear about celebrities flying and I was like how hard could it be it's very hard it's very hard and pretty quickly into my training my flight instructor told me to take the plane into a self-imposed stall it's just you stall it on purpose and I just thought this is a terrible idea land right away and I'll spend my time learning other things [Applause] you do like learning things though I mean I'm famous to the piano and lalala and you've learned some very specific things for was it test of the d'Urbervilles oh yeah milk a cow yeah we played em is he Hewitt who was a lovely little milkmaid yeah yeah my cow had water teats water what warranty worry [Applause] no tea but Warsi yeah water water tea and so the thing was I had slide through the entire scene just feeling like us catching some kind of horrific hand I was really good we find to the teeth well it was all I could think of was auntie back auntie back I'm super probably not now now in terms of actually you've told us now with Neil Armstrong through music that you discovered he liked this particular bit of music is this true right yeah the theremin the theremin yeah theremin I think we've got the do you want to tell us about the what where did you find this music had I just I love the theremin and I was happy to find out that Neil of the theorem and I was looking for ways to connect to him and you know he's a genius who's filled with you know incredible courage and he's a master and many things and I was looking for a connection there and then I thought theremin and so I brought that to the director and there was a this really beautiful piece of music called lunar Rhapsody music from the moon and Neil and Janet were they loved it in in college it was kind of their song and you know having no idea that what their lives would be common that the moon would be so involved yeah with their lives but we ended up using it in the film and and then the composer took the theremin and and learned how to play it and a lot of our score is theremin base now it's really beautiful so this is a little bit of the lunar what's called the lunar Rhapsody lunar Rhapsody that's the thing [Music] it's good television here's things is a weird link theremin with Doctor Who because the Doctor Who theme has the theremin and it doesn't it as well yeah I can't play it I'll cut you that's because I've gone for theremin I got a theremin now I think this is on so II don't you do anything to it oh look yeah it's on it's on ladies Edwin okay good thank you though and so we that bit so this is keeps it quiet have you played one of these before I have not I've heard about it that keeps it quiet okay and then you take that off a little console the world give it a world lady lady dog on the third [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well have a go at the bottom EP okay so let's go let's go to the doctor who does it is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I don't know what we paid for that but it was really worth it [Music] the time has come that we must discuss Doctor Who the new season starts on the 7th of October for the first time ever doctor who will be on a Sunday this is much excitement so how did you hear you know was one of the things obviously the audition but did you when did you hear where were you when you heard I I thought it was my final audition and so I I knew I wasn't required to do any of the the scenes for the audition I wasn't taping I just thought it was a chat with the grown-ups and it was kind of you know the last pitch and so I walked in game face really kind of a bit steely but played it cool and sat down without everyone half of the room I knew because of broadchurch and so I you know Saturn was like yeah hey hey hey how are you yeah can we just get on with it cuz got a lot to say then chibs Chris Chibnall and he just leaned over the table and said so we'd like you to be the next Doctor on it's all really important information about what he was gonna be like and what was required and I just kind of when I really want to what's up someone so I walk that was like an hour I think of chatting and I think I just think I just kept cryin add it for that for the joy for the fear for the responsibility for you know for for the fans and for the fact that you know it's an alien with two hearts but I am a woman I get asked a lot about girls looking up to you but it's about boys as well you know how many women in your life inspire you but also how many people in my life regardless of gender and sometimes in cinema and in characters they're not even human and I'm inspired and want to be like them so I think that that's what's exciting about the moment but I hope it's a moment and that this announcement is this and I'll dine out on it forever you will all be the first steel turnovers of this convention is Jerry talking w have you ever heard of Doctor Who yes yes oh yeah you've seen it yeah sure who's that was that in Canada they shot in Canada yeah we got that all the way in Canada it is everywhere so started in this 60s Wow but the first guy with like a lot of hair yeah yeah that's the one I saw as a kid no oh you don't know you get in are legit laughing it didn't it didn't get to me this one of the traditions are of interview doctor who is they come on to tell us about the new show and then reveal that can tell us nothing about it has that change no okay well let's watch a clip this is you as the brand new doctor meeting some of your new friends [Applause] right time for music tonight in a career spanning over 50 years this Grammy winning rock-and-roll legend I sold over 200 million albums performing his new single didn't I it is Rob Stewart [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there are times to remember and times that I wish to forget time together with span quiver [Music] nice sweet silicic girl [Music] [Music] that's life [Music] [Applause] it was - I was just an old [Music] you left home for the city with Holly [Music] your mother [Applause] [Music] [Music] to remember times that I will wish to forget any good [Applause] Sage's [Applause] it was pretty good it was after all these years you end it with any good one can never just take one's career notice the audience of their enjoyment well they did enjoy it so you weren't sir you know I was saying that you over fifty years and lots of number-one records and great tours of it but that honor must mean so much oh yeah I mean it's have you got one cool about it no yeah it's it's may be so proud has to change my life this may be very proud to be British I know they tell you one thing right this doesn't come from the royal family they present it to you it comes from the British public [Applause] what an amazing day that must be and what did you give a big party do you got for lunch I gave a party at lunch sir is tired terrific performance thank you so much and that is the single of blood-red roses you know I'm which is out tonight yeah tonight none of the albums out too much yes yeah here's the ad mode tonight sir odds words yes it is okay and it strikes me that this album do you know that song it's it's a it's a different perspective to be singing from it's a kind of more mature perspective you were kind of a me it's you know being a parent of eight children and you know the youngest is seven and it's like a note from it's like I'm speaking as a parent I'm speaking for all the parents are worried about their kids getting into drug because a lot of problems in America now of the opioids opioids opioids so you know it comes from that stance yeah but also a warning which is a bit bit right coming from a rock star I'm of the age now yeah but also you know a lot of your audience will like hearing their lives reflected in them in their lyrics yeah but you do schedule your tours differently now because of schools and stuff yeah yeah the two the two boys are going to school in England whereas the rest are all brought up in Beverly Hills and we decide to give them a chance here you know this worked out good yeah now your son Aiden how old is he god bless him seven so he's seven now you know I think you posted this video online it's the cutest thing so you're doing a concert where there was a Madison Square Garden okay so was he in the wings yeah okay so he's seven in the wings Madison Square Garden but your dad is so Rod Stewart and he does this [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] such a proud dad [Applause] it's so funny I was then you know talk when we want to about three years ago it was and I was talking to it oh no it was Alistar my 12 year old when he was a lot younger and I'm talking to him so you don't like night yeah okay yeah okay dad everything's good okay can I speak to Penny and he goes yeah okay [Laughter] next next well I've got three three three weeks in America and the next year we do a British tour and a European tour Wow what isn't good luck with that but thank you and thank you so much that performance was it was [Applause] here we go five o'clock first visit of Casillas to the big red chair god help us who's there hello hi hi what's your name Shannon it is annoying when the people who read chair get a bigger reaction of the care did you did you do something in warmup or something yeah did you tell this story no no Lenin Lenin yeah this is what they talked about warmup you're not named after a Russian it's the yeah ja it's an Irish name it's my friend duneagle so I'm a circus performer and I was doing an act with my partner and we were just about to go on stage and she really needed the bathroom but there wasn't time so we pushed her onstage she got up she was doing her act doing her tricks and something didn't really look right oh but she kept going and we got to the last trick and she went into the trick and she showed the audience [Music] [Applause] that's not know the controversial golden shower storm and shat [Applause] like this virus I just image this that is it for tonight please say a huge thank you to my guests so rubs shirt [Applause] joining a treatment can fool Jeff Goldblum Prince of pop Gary Barlow Lord of laughter Rowan Atkinson and scream queen herself Jamie Lee Curtis I'll see you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so we can't wait for Jodie Whittaker family doctor who next Sunday the 7th on BBC one bit
