PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE - IN, ON, AT | Quiz Lesson

hello and welcome to today's lesson i think this is going to be a very fun lesson and i also think it should be insightful if you are a beginner learner intermediate advanced my my always my goal at the end is that you learn something new so i think this lesson really applies to all levels because we're going to be talking about prepositions specifically we're going to be talking about prepositions of place and really only focusing on in on and at so that's why i said i think this is relevant no matter what level you are uh where you're at because we we learn prepositions typically early on and talk about places and where things are at and but sometimes they can still be confusing i think this is often where many people no matter what level make just small small mistakes so the way that i want to do this of course i want to to test your knowledge uh toward the end i just want to talk about how we use each preposition and then i have some questions for you so first um i do want to say hello welcome uh good to see you lali takayau um muffin yashar anisa thank you guys for joining me today i will try to get some more shout outs in as we go through this because like i said i do have uh i have quite a few questions for you let me get myself in the frame here all right so let's start with in and remember we're only focusing on prepositions of place we're specifically just looking at place so the first one um i'll go through these uh quickly rather quickly it's used to talk about like locations within a larger area like in the example sentence i talk about tenants people who live in the building that is the larger area or if i say that something is in this room all right it's uh it's like it's enclosed all right within this larger area we're going to use in if we're talking about um a car a van or a taxi all right you're also going to use in okay car van or taxi and we also would use it with workplaces okay so i gave you that example sentence she works in human resources all right so i know that that is is also i'd say again you could it is a place all right where somebody um is located as far as their work is concerned like he works in marketing she works in human resources we're going to use in all right we're also going to use in if we're talking about well water all right then i gave that example this is another phrase that people may talk and use in english if they're referring to dating and um you know whether man or woman doesn't matter if you say like well i you know i'm having trouble meeting someone you could say well there are plenty of fish in the sea all right there's many people available to date out there so you would say in the sea or in the river in the ocean we would use in with water when talking about class all right he has trouble paying attention in class i hope you guys have no trouble paying attention and following along these lessons when you are in this class right now and then finally printed materials and the way this is changing a little bit so let me explain i say printed materials like um books you see something in a book or in a newspaper or in a magazine or in an article in the example i said you're looking up words in the dictionary the thing is i i even though i say printed materials a lot of things have moved online nowadays and even if you're talking about something online it's not printed you're still going to use in if you read something in an article online so just keep that in mind even if it's an online dictionary you're still going to use in even though a lot of this has become now digital all right so i know that can be a little confusing let's now all right let's move on to uh to on okay so um again focusing on prepositions of place and then i'm gonna quiz you so we use on if we're talking about the the position on any surface like um this water bottle it's on my hand right now all right it's on like that would be the surface to talk about the floor and a building like you live on the the second floor the third floor the fourth floor and it's also used to describe um a position along a road or a river or by the sea or lake um so in the example i said like i grew up on the east coast all right that that is um where where i grew up or if you say something is um on the river or like we have um we have a little home on the lake all right it's not talking about really like on the surface of the lake but just along along the lake okay and we are also going to use on and i think many of you are um familiar with this next one talking about public transit like um you're you're on the train you're on the bus you're on the plane you'll use on with left or right um you know where is it located it's on the right my office is on the right or something is on the left and then with media and this is where in and on can be a little tricky so i told you that in you would use with like printed materials but things that could also move online like um diction online dictionary or and on you could read a book online but if you're talking about media like the news um you saw something on the news or uh the example like you watch videos on youtube you are watching this lesson right now on youtube so in general with the media you're going to use on okay let's uh let's keep rolling through and talk about at okay we're going to use at to refer to the position or location as a point like i said there's a package at the front door now that would be a very small point you could use it to talk about like like a larger point that would even kind of be like a place um if you say you're at the gym um you could think of it like that as well like the gym that would kind of be the point even though it's a larger larger place um it's used to refer to an address all right remember if we're if we're just talking about streets you would say on main street but a specific address i live at at 44 main street all right we also use at when we're referring to like shops or public places um and again this is where i think you could also like i said when i talked about at the gym you could think of that as like again another public place but um you know at the store at the mall and then you would use it to refer to group activities how many people were at your party all right party involves a group of people or maybe you um something happened at the meeting all right a meeting would also involve a group of people and we use it at with school or university so remember in was with class in class but if you're talking about school you'd say something happened at school or i studied at a top-notch university top-notch is a phrase that just means excellent quality and this is actually not true okay that is just an example i didn't study i don't i wouldn't say it was a top-notch university uh university of colorado i think um they were uh they were a top-notch party school i would say probably um and then we have at with home or work so you're talking about like today at work something happened i gave an important presentation or something happened at home okay so i know that i've kind of went through those um i tried to go through them quickly because i want to get to the the meat of the lesson which are those questions that i have for you so i'm going to give you a question and i want you just to fill it in with in on or at all i'll give you a moment to think about it and then i'll tell you the answer and the other thing that i would say with these prepositions is this is um i know it's hard to learn all of those rules that i just said or trying to memorize them i don't think that that's necessarily the best way to to learn and think about okay which one do i need to use i think it's good to know the rules and kind of see some examples with them but i just think the more you read the more you practice you're just going to internalize it with these prepositions so that when you're writing or when you're speaking you'll be able to use the correct preposition okay so let's look at our first question and then i'll try to i'll look at some of the answers and try to give you guys um some some shout outs as we go through this um we stopped our car the traffic light now as we go through this it is i think it'll start it's going to be a little easier and then it'll get a little more challenging um as we go through so what do you guys think um we stopped our car um the traffic light i'll give you like five more seconds five well five four three two one and i'm counting quickly so yes you guys i think you rocked it the correct answer is at we stopped our car at the traffic light excellent lolly uh brayan adriana yashar takaya perfect okay so you guys i you guys got that one i think fairly easily perfect we'll see if i can i'll i'll try to to trip you up a little bit um so the next one if somebody were saying this okay think about that situation somebody's talking to you and they're saying this i couldn't hear you i was um the shower and like i mentioned like you know don't don't worry about like rules just think about you know what what even feels naturally which one do you think best completes this uh this sentence all right i couldn't hear you i was um the shower and then i'll try to tie it back to the rule that we just talked about okay excellent the correct answer i didn't do the countdown that time i apologize in um well done anisa vishwas pulkit um sanjeev krishna perfect i couldn't hear you i was in the shower so remember what i talked about in um well you could think of it one of two ways like you when i said it we use in with water um like you're in the ocean in this case the shower it is water but you could also think of it like you are kind of surrounded by this thing you are enclosed all right you're in the shower uh the next one okay and this one i will try to explain it uh a little bit for those of you maybe if you're unfamiliar with um a bumper sticker so somebody like again somebody might be pointing this out look at the funny bumper sticker um that van okay look at the funny bumper sticker um that van so bumper sticker i this is something that you would see more probably in the u.s all right i'm gonna show you a picture on the the next page um what it is it's not something i've seen that much of in other countries but people will have these bumper stickers and i almost gave the answer when i just was about to say what it is okay so the answer the correct answer is on all right excellent uh lolly esther um mohawk wendy angela great job okay so i look at that funny bumper sticker on the van all right so i told you like in you would use it with um like a car or a taxi or a van but that would refer to like you are inside um you know somebody would tell you to um get in the car or something happened when i was in the car like you're inside the vehicle in this case the bumper sticker is like a sticker you would put on the outside of your car typically it would go on the bumper of the car and again this is not something that um you would i don't know you might see it more in the u.s those of you who are in the u.s you may see this driving along the road people are making statements it could be political it could be about the environment or like this one i thought this was funny sometimes at like um like a high school if a student gets really they get good grades they become an honor student they would give the family like a bumper sticker and then maybe the mother or father would put it on their car and say like my son or daughter was an honor student and this one's kind of just joking around um like i was an honor student i don't know what happened like their life did not turn out the way they thought it would be even though they were an honor student um it's a fun one uh funny one the next question okay let's look all right what do you guys think um there are no firearms allowed um university property okay would it what would you which preposition should go there there are no firearms um no there are no firearms allowed um university property okay so let's uh oh wow okay i think i got you guys all right so the the correct answer again many of you said at okay so think of it this way in this case university is an adjective all right we're not using it as a noun like i mentioned in the example sentence uh somebody goes um they studied at a great university you study at university you study at school in this case we're talking about property so if you're talking about like something uh like a person would be on the property and if the person is carrying something then you would say yes there are no firearms allowed on university property so i would say talking about property like the like the land it would you would be on it if you were to talk about like a building in that case you would use in like you would say there are no firearms allowed in the building but if we're talking about property again you're like that would be the surface that you are on there are no fire alarms allowed on university property okay all right so hopefully again i told you i want i want everybody to just learn something new hopefully this one um that you it makes sense now okay remember university in this case is the adjective it is university property um okay some people are like sad or crying it's okay all right um we can keep going it makes like i said it i actually like it when there are a few mistakes because then you know we can explain something we can talk about it which i i hope then is you learn something new um so this one i think you guys um i think you guys can get this this is a pretty i think common just discussion so in any way you look so young um this picture all right you look so young this picture are we going to use in on or at okay so i told you i think you guys um would get this excellent just to show out some hottie uh lucy leah bob um [Music] are wait sue mart uh esther then the the correct answer is n um i forgot to mention that if you i mentioned like printed material and you think of like a book is something that's printed also pictures especially a long time ago that you people would print out the pictures so in that case you could you could relate it to that and think of in so there's you see something in the picture but nowadays people are using their phone it's digital you would still use in so that same um kind of rule applies uh whether it's like in a book or in a in a picture so yes you look so young in this picture okay so here's the next question we're gonna going through these trying to go through get through as many as i can so this now there's two um right now i'm m the mall you can find me the food court right now whoops let me get back in the frame i'm um the mall you can find me um the food court now i will say that for this one um there there are different answers that you you could give i'm gonna give you my opinion as to what i think the most common response would be think of it if somebody were to ask you where are you they there you talk to somebody on the phone they say hey hey where are you and you say right now i'm in the mall you can find me mmm the food court all right let's talking uh this uh i see natalie all right that was the answer i have uh hottie yes myrna um that is what i have so the the reason why i said that this this could be tricky for either one of those you could put in um in or at in or at could be used in either one of those blanks but what i would say is that if we're talking about the mall okay you're identifying that that place most commonly when somebody says where are you all right you're you're giving them that position that point um is the way i would think of it now that point doesn't have to be really small it could be a bigger place um so i would use at right now i'm at the mall and then if you want to be more specific you can find me in the food court because now we're talking about you're surrounded by this larger thing so this is good too like i said if somebody were to ask you just in general where are you most people whether you're talking about the movies the mall the gym most people are going to respond with at and the reason why when when people use at i think it's just assumed that the person is inside so when you're talking about at you're referring to that general location that that point okay hey i'm at the mall um so i think most often people will use at when somebody's just like hey where are you and then i followed it up to somebody trying to be more specific like yes you can find me in the food court but again in at you could use them with either one of those um blanks uh but again i just wanted to share my opinion as to what i think is probably more commonly used as to what what somebody would say if they're like hey where are you um sorry for that longer explanation um here's the next one okay every weekend i go swimming mmm the beach i really enjoy lying out the sand okay every weekend i go swimming the beach i really enjoy lying out um the sand what do you think which ones um what are we gonna put in those those blank spaces uh again if you guys got it wrong don't the ones before don't worry about it um i i like i said hopefully that my explanation makes sense as to how i came to the answer and maybe learn something new so in on or at what are we going to put um excellent uh let's see who do we have right uh angela lolly hottie um okay all right so we're talking about every weekend i go swimming all right um the beach the don't let swimming confuse you okay you're talking about the beach just like the mall you're talking more like a general place a general location you could think of it as more a point even though it would be like a larger point um you could also think of it somebody could think of it in regards to like maybe a group activity um a public space all right like the mall or the beach so you go swimming at the beach and you enjoy lying out on the sand so in this case the sand is the surface and you are on it you are on the sand um you wouldn't be in the sand you could be buried in the sand but if you're talking about lying out you have your um your your big uh towel that you're gonna lie out on and you're lying out on the sand and you do this at the beach all right so again i told you i mentioned before if somebody were to ask somebody oh where are you overwhelmingly people are going to use at i'm at the beach i'm at the movie i'm at the mall i'm at the gym and then that next one is a little more specific let's follow up on this all right so every weekend i go swimming at the beach i really enjoy lying out on the sand the next one is kind of connected to the same um to this these two sentences my friend has a boat and sometimes we'll take it out um the water but mostly but i i love swimming the ocean okay so again think about the the context i don't think that the the meaning of these sentences are too difficult to understand i know the prepositions can be tricky but once again think about um which which ones would you use in on or at to fill in those two blanks i told you this is a continuation of the last question we're still talking about this person is at the beach um [Music] okay so what do you what do you guys think i'll give you five more seconds five four three two one all right so the correct answer [Music] um on and in i saw a couple different on and ins to cayo mary salvade um adriana [Music] um sorry i miss a few more uh brian all right my friend has a boat and sometimes we take it out on the water again picture the boat in your mind all right um it's like the water then is the surface the boat is going to be on it all right you're out on the water but mostly i love swimming in the ocean i mentioned that you use in when talking about just water we had that question before about being in the shower or you could say that you're swimming in the pool in this case you're in the ocean and you're actually in the water swimming okay so on and in the next one um [Music] here we go and bonus points if you can tell me what the this these two sentences reference all right i'm referencing something um a movie okay what movie is it referencing i work um 1988 nakatomi plaza my office is um the 30th floor what are you going to use in on at and bonus points i told you what what movie what movie am uh am i referencing with this uh with this question so i'll give you five seconds five four three two one okay so you'd say i work at oh i don't wanna i'm giving you the answer at 1988 nakatomi plaza my office is on the 30th floor i think some of you um probably remember those two rules i said like uh an address a specific address you're going to use at all right 1988 nakatomi plaza would be the address if we're talking about floors in a building on the first floor on the second floor on the third floor all right this is not really the the movie that i was referencing was the movie die hard it's the nakatomi plaza is the famous building that is not the address the movie came out in 1988 and part of the movie does take place the christmas party is up on the 30th floor um so [Music] yes that i'm kind of dating myself uh with that old old movie reference from 1988 great movie though uh by the way i was 10 and i'll let you guys do the math i was 10 when this movie came out all right um yeah that that's a good point uh gustav talking about difference in a floor on a floor british american uh english yes this is definitely i'm from the united states for any of you who may not be familiar uh with this channel in case you're new yes i am from the us u.s you would say that on when talking about those floors on the 30th floor um the next one okay so again i have two blanks for you i first heard about this story um the radio and then i read about it um the newspaper in on at we're talking about prepositions of place okay so which prepositions would you use to complete uh these two sentences i first heard about it i first heard about this story um the radio and then i read about it um the newspaper five seconds five more seconds five four three two one okay all right uh excellent so the correct answer yes is going to be on and then in um natalie lolly yashar um let's see who else had on in marsha i'm trying to get as many shout outs as i can okay so i heard about the story on the radio um remember i said you'll use on when talking about like the media in general you see something on tv you're watching uh these videos on youtube you hear something on the radio and then you read about it in like um in the newspaper we talked about those printed materials in the newspaper um in the magazine in the book all right so again on and then in little girls uh getting a little upset uh maybe you can hear her in the background i'm gonna have to go see see what's going
