Myths Of The Realm Explained (FFXIV Lore)

[Music] one of the oldest pieces of final fantasy 14's lore is also shrouded in mystery the 12 are a pantheon of gods that cities landmarks and cultures are devoted to but aside from the belief that people have in them we haven't really seen the 12 do much but now we're getting a new story with the pantheon as the focus let's dive into what we know about the 12 and what they could be up to with the latest raid myths of the realm i really hope you enjoy [Music] all players have a connection to the 12. during character creation you must select a deity to align with your character the game gives you a brief description of their imagery domain and element now back in 1.0 each deity would give characters a very minor elemental resistance this has since been removed so the choice of the deity doesn't mean much aside from establishing your own warrior of lights background so before we go further let's establish who the twelve are polone is the fury mover of glaciers and goddess of war she commands the element of ice helone is depicted as a relentless warrior wielding a bronze shield her symbol is three spears helone is the patron of the holy see of ishgard mafina is the lover and keeper of the moons her element is also ice she is depicted as a maid carrying a round skillet her symbol is the full greater moon she's also the younger sister of azema and the divine lover of oshan keeper of the moon makote typically worship her thaliak is the scholar ruler of rivers and wisdom and god of knowledge he commands the water element and his symbol is a scroll he's the patron of charlie and bear god's teacher and father of lame elaine nymia is the spinner watcher of celestial bodies and goddess of fate she commands water and is depicted as a weaver in white silk her symbol is a spinning wheel she's the master of roger and the younger sister of altheck lamelain is the navigator watcher of the seas and goddess of navigation she commands wind and is depicted as a strong fisherwoman holding a long-bladed harpoon her symbol is the wave and she's the patron of limsa lomensah there's many references to her in the city oshan is the wanderer ruler of the mountains and god of vagrants he commands wind and is depicted as a ranger wielding a u-bow his symbol is a walking stick he's the patron of the ancient city of nim and the miners guild the bard's spell wanderers minuet is a reference to him dirgot is the builder purveyor of architecture and industry and god of the arts he commands lightning and is depicted as a smith holding a mighty hammer his symbol is the hand bearer god's strike in southern thanolan is named after him roger is the destroyer breaker of worlds and god of destruction he also commands lightning and is depicted as a magi wielding a bronze staff his symbol is a meteor roger is the guardian deity of al amigo roger's reach is a direct reference to him and there are several more in the lox and thanolan azema is the warden keeper of the sun and goddess of inquiry she wields fire and is depicted as a noble lady with a golden fan her symbol is the sun that's why seeker of the sun makote usually worship her now erianj theorizes she might be inspired by the ancient asm but there's no evidence to support this nofica is the matron tender of soils and harvests she commands the earth element and is shown as a farmer with a scythe of steel her symbol is the spring leaf she's also the patron of gridania several conjurer spells like goddess's protection and shroud of saints are references to her althak is the keeper surveyor of change and god of space and time he also commands earth and is shown as an emperor wielding a mithril great axe his symbol is the hourglass alfix lavender is a flower that's rarely found in thanoland and is usually offered at funerals naldthal are the traitors overseers of transaction and god of the underworld they command fire and are depicted as a merchant holding a balance his symbol is the kaori an ancient shell currency now nadthal are twins but usually manifest as a single entity two shrines to them can be found in southern and eastern thanoland respectively they also have a lot of influence in ulda architecture the 12 are benevolent deities who ruled the continent and its surrounding islands thousands of years ago each elemental pairing is tied to one of six constellations in the night sky references in history indicate they potentially go back to the first astral era but not before the sundering people began worshiping them in the third astral era the same time as the rise and fall of the elegant empire in the fifth astral era the nations that fought in the war of the magi each took one of the twelve as a guardian deity this practice continues in present day with some regional differences in the 1.0 story the garlian empire called upon the artificial moon of dalamod using forbidden elegant magic it began descending towards the theorists threatening another calamity that would bring it one step closer to a rejoining the symbols of the twelve appeared across ayorzia the allison scholar luis sua levere encouraged people to seek out these symbols and pray to the twelve for comfort and safety he later confesses to the adventurer that he placed those symbols in hopes of summoning the actual twelve now much later when bahamut breaks out of daliman and is threatening the eorzean alliance it's believed luiswa invoked the power of the twelve to pierce the great primal and bind him in place unfortunately it's not enough to reseal him that's because luisoi held back believing summoning the 12 would wound heideln the goddess of the star you can go watch my scions part 1 video if you want to know more about this section of the story after that the 12 are referenced sparingly in the story the most significant callback being by emmett selk before he passes urging the warrior light to discover the true identities of the twelve patch 6.1 introduced the first chapter of the myths of the realm raid it's a cannon story involving the twelve tasking the warrior of light with finding the truth about their origins and purpose so what did we learn the group joins up with grahatia a researcher named derek and his oppo oppo companion and they find themselves in a phantom realm now it's not a reflection like the first nor is it in between like the rift the rules of this realm aren't exactly clear but we do know gifted people can slip in and out usually without their control the group finds a lavish sanctum in the sky known as umphalose you can see pieces of mordona's landscape including the crystal tower from here derek says he's been here many times but he's never encountered anyone until now four deities descend from their sanctums virgot roger azema and nodthal each bear striking resemblances to the gods of ancient greek mythology they issue a challenge claiming they want to ascend and replace heidelen as the will of the star the warrior gathers allies and travels through the heavens of thunder and fire besting all four this is when the deities reveal their ruse they don't want to take over the star they just wanted to provoke the warrior to act in reality they don't pose any danger to the warrior or the rest of his group they also tell us that they aren't primals given that they are not summoned and don't have the ability to temper these four members of the twelve also clarify that luis suarez never actually summoned the twelve back in the day that was a primal born from the scion's wishes to save the star they do promise to challenge us again in the future assuring that they will reveal their true intentions when the time is right until then they urge the warrior to study their history we also learn that the twelve observe the star by taking the forms of small creatures roger implies that their image has shaped modern primals like the resemblances between roger and the primal rama that's because people have been slipping into the phantom realm for centuries catching glimpses of the 12 each tale adds to their legacy and bolsters the belief from the people the quests end for now with the group promising to learn more about the 12 and challenge other members of the pantheon we'll find out more in patch 6.3 but for now we still have some unanswered questions if the 12 aren't primals how did they ascend to godhood are they legendary figures from a freshly sundered world possibly inspiring lesser races to carry on or maybe heidelne created them to give the star further protection also what's up with derek how has he managed to find the phantom realm so many times he mentions he's a wanderer so perhaps he has a connection to oshan or maybe he's oshan or possibly one of the other members of the pantheon and even if derek isn't it's very likely that his oppo oppo companion is one of the 12 in disguise all interesting story threads that i'm excited to learn more about so what do you think the 12 are up to which
