Why Hythlodaeus Is The Greatest Friend Ever (FFXIV Lore)

in the world of final fantasy 14 there is no greater friend than hithladeaus he certainly stands out among the other ancients for his gentle optimism loyalty and his selflessness now he doesn't appear as much as the other ancients like emmett selk but he serves an important purpose in those chapters of the story he's also not like other ancients who aspire to make their mark on the greater good for mankind no hethladeius takes a bit part by his own admission and helps some of the story's most important characters rise to greatness let's look closely at why this character is so important and give you some insight on one of his decisions that you might have missed when you were playing through endwalker but first another spoiler alert to anyone who hasn't finished end walker's main story enjoy [Music] our first encounter with hithla deus happens late in the final fantasy xiv story in the shadowbringers expansion the warrior of darkness our player is searching the ancient city of omarot it's not the real city though only a recreation by emmett selk from his time the people are not real just shades built on emmett's memories the warrior is up against more than just the asean however he's also dealing with the light stored inside him from slaying light wardens the entire expansion the pain almost becomes too much to bear until this particular shade asks the warrior to sit down and chat this is hithladeus shade he's unique among other shades wandering omarot who seem oblivious to the final days that would soon dismantle their civilization no hethledeius knows he's a recreation and he also knows that the final days are coming now he isn't sure why he's aware that he's not real but he hypothesizes that emmett selk made a mistake when casting the spell so hithledia shares what he knows with the warrior of that event we also learn he's one of the rare people with the soul side ability allowing him to see ardbert the warriors counterpart on the first he reveals both are fragments of azim an asean who served on the convocation of fourteen fare you well my new old friend now you find what it is you seek we encountered this shade one more time when the warrior returns to confront elitibus it's here that the warrior discovers the convocation's memory crystals the shade implores the warrior to keep them he also passes no judgment on the warriors confrontation with elitibus that's about to happen instead urging him to live and to keep their promise to remember amarot the shade also offers the warrior asm's memory stone emmett selk created this in secret but the shade isn't sure if that was his own doing the warrior tries to thank him for his help but oh there's no need for thanks but nor will i hear any complaints about it either after all i cannot say whether i act of my own volition or by the will of my recreator so if that hithledius is simply a recreation then where's the real one to understand that we have to revisit the end times for omarod the convocation of 14 knows they have to stop the song of oblivion to survive and they decide that summoning the primal zodiac is the only way to protect the theris the convocation makes the painful choice to sacrifice half of the star's population to bring zodiac to life those souls offered up to zodiac remain in limbo unable to rejoin the sea of stars so when the primal heideland imprisoned zodiac on the moon that's where those lost souls were bound as well hithledeus was among those sacrificed that's why we find him on the moon in the n walker expansion he immediately recognizes us as the reincarnation of azim and offers to keep the other shades at bay this allows the warrior to confront zodiac hethledeus also appears to us one more time before the battle with these words believe and walk in faith let the light of your soul shine for all to see [Music] not quite the outcome you'd imagined but a fitting one nonetheless don't you think so hades the encouragement is obviously for the warrior however the question is meant for one of his closest friends hades the true name of the one who holds the seat of emmett selk on the convocation another important piece to show us just how close these two really are let's move forward in time or rather backwards the warrior travels to elpis a place on a theorist many years in the past it's there he discovers hithledeus and emmett selk in their youth they're meeting with hermes to assess if he's fit to serve as fan daniel on the convocation we learn so much about hithladius and his friendship with asm and emmett selk in these chapters he's very friendly but also incredibly smug he teases emmett sulk with sly comments but it's still clear he has an extraordinary amount of respect for him and despite his teasing nature deep down he's very humble in fact he was originally selected for the seat of emmett selk over hades but he turned that position down recommending hades for the position instead azam supported that recommendation it's also here that we learn about the ancients and their duty they believe the most important thing they can do for the star is fulfilling their purpose to find some way to be of a benefit to mankind they put everything they have into that mission and once it's accomplished they die to rejoin the sea of stars although it seems bittersweet the ancients look at this tradition as something to be celebrated emmett selk tells hermes there's no reason to be sad over someone dying it's a joyous occasion at least it's supposed to be all ancients work towards that purpose so what is hithladeus's purpose we'll come back to this shortly now while on elvis hiffledeius assists in confronting hermes and meteon atop katissa's hyperborea hermes wipes everyone's memories of the last several days excluding bernat and the warrior who only escape thanks to hithlideus help no matter what you cannot forget what happened today for it is the key to saving your future your world this fight is our fight what comes after our problem to contend with not yours no your own struggle awaits and no one else can take your place you must flee this place with your memories and i will see that you do the spell completes leaving hithla deus hermes and emmett selk with no memory of ever meeting the warrior in the past now in the present hethledeus and emmett selk finally returned in ultimate thule to break meteon free of the collective consciousness's control the two leave hoping that the trio will meet again someday i pray we meet again if not in this life then perhaps another whensoever it should be i trust it will be a most joyous reunion for you maybe i want nothing to do with it oh don't be that way now that's the last we see of hithladaeus in the story but let's go back to ancient omarod the convocation needs to sacrifice half of life on a theorist to summon zodiac the only being they believe that can stop the final days now azim doesn't agree with this decision and left the convocation emmett selk and one of his closest friends have a falling out now during a lengthy cut scene with fanat we see hithladius and emmett selk having a discussion if ledayus has made the difficult decision to sacrifice himself a selfless choice that not only ends his life but would imprison his soul with zodiac forever emmet selk is powerless to stop his friend saddened angry all of the emotions he said shouldn't come with death and yet here he is wrought with despair over losing his closest friend this moment adds so much weight to what emmett silk told us back in shadowbringers i will bring back our brethren our friends our loved ones you think us the same you think your tatted soul of equal worth to those i lost the context behind this scene makes it an incredibly powerful moment in the story especially when you understand what hethledeus's grand purpose is he believes his duty is to asm and emmet selk not to the star his ultimate purpose is to raise his best friends to new heights helped them become the people he always knew they could be his dream is to help others achieve their dreams you couldn't ask for a better friend than hithladeaus it's
