just a second it's testing our broadcasters testing the Internet we're making it what I said accidentally you'll explain all right I think I think we're live you guys see anything yet Kim if you're using my phone I don't know much battery of right all right three two one yep evening folks welcome live YouTube broadcast number 1818 oh I was funny so tonight's topic is going to be on building a table saw sled which I've amazed how many people have set off finally get one that works before we do that got some announcements first of all I want to show you my shirt today Jake and I went to can you see it base gauge down which is military training base Canadian Forces Base of 45 50 minutes north of us and thanks to tony tony is one of our scholarship combat wounded vets it's going to be coming in the spring tony organized this took the bull by the horns got us a room went around to a local a bunch of local restaurants and got us food for the event and we had 21 wounded vets in that presentation today so we spent the morning teaching and and planning sharpening setting up a plane and in the afternoon we did dovetails we gave away as a door prize that plane we gave away a trend diamond plate we gave away a set of IVC wood River chisels something else those three so the guys were happy and it was awesome to be there thank you for the t-shirts gentlemen and you're worth it every penny wish we could do more next thing in case you don't know we do these live YouTube broadcasts to help us raise money for our Purple Heart Project in a nutshell Purple Heart Project is something we do six times a year once a week I've heard me one week a month the sixth good travel months in Canada which is May through October each time we bring in six combat wounded veterans from wherever they may be Canada United States Australia have been represented so far but we've also had applications from England we bring them in at our expense Hotel meals airfare tuition and this year we're going to give each vet approximately four thousand dollars worth of premium tools to take home so they can set up their own little shop in case you're wondering what we're adding Tom Lee Nelson was very generous and vowing me to buy 36 of these SKU block planes at wholesale so we can give each vet one Tom himself gives us two mortise chisel x' for each vet every time we teach we're adding a I don't even have it here a mortise gage and a bench crosscut saw so you'll be well stocked now the applications for that the you must be it must be a combat-related wound whether it be a mental wound or physical wound you must have proof that you were honorably discharged if unless you're still serving because it's open to active members as well and you need a passport in order to get across the Canadian border we operate this at our shop here in Granby New Brunswick which is about one hour into a New Brunswick from the Maine us a u.s. Maine border we've already selected our folks for the first three classes May June July and what's the cutoff deadline dick June 15 June 15th is the cutoff for August September October classes we choose 18 with one alternate each time if the alternate doesn't get used because somebody cancels they alternate has promised a spot on the next class that we teach in each class there are six combat wounded veterans and six civilian spots and civilians or anybody that would like to apply May is full June is fold July is full we have two spots left in August one pending we have one spot look at four spots left ninety we don't what are you talking about yeah are you sure and Satan you're not kidding okay we got four spots where'd that come from I dropped out oh I'm gonna take the October class so apparently there's four spots left in August and how that happened there's one spot left in September and there are four spots left in October so if you're interested jump on board now a couple other things there are prizes for tonight we're on a theme we finally have the new DVD ready for the Cosmin bench that's our formerly known as a hundred dollar bench made out of MDF and ply it's been in the we Lutheran I fancy I shot that video I think we started almost a year ago it was what did you cut it down from Frick how many well raw footage was around eight or nine hours and then we did one cut to make it down to five and a half but the final running time is about four and a half hours four and a half hours so everything's in there you're gonna need now we've built 30 some of these so we've streamlined the process Luther came up with probably the best idea of the second only to the bench itself on how to glue up the top so that it eliminates the need for clamps and just really good who did our sketch up Tom Tom jookin from Fuu Mugen from foo gate who gate just tom he did the sketch up so you'll with it we'll get the lead PDF version and then you can buy separately the full 3d version of the sketch up to go along with it so that's going to be released Frick within the next couple of weeks yeah possibly we're just waiting on getting the hard copy so we can have it in DVD as well as download not download on demand on demand on demand so tonight's prizes are going to be our four piece caster set now that may look like just a regular would rivers but it's not because we have our magician named Wilfred he comes in and he beats them up by welding on another piece so that these things don't bend and notoriously yeah let's just say that they bend under the weight of the bench these ones won't what do we reach others forging 122nd fries will be the shoberg elite the shoberg vet vice that we use this is the best commercially available vice that you can find you can eliminate all the racking it's fantastic and we'll throw in the two of the show bird bench the aluminum bench dog so if you hit them with your plane you won't destroy your plane and then the third prize is going to be the CBN grinding wheel that's the one that cuts so fast and to go along with it will be the Wolverine grinding jig which just so you can see the setup attaches to the base so it'll fit any grinder and it is the best tool rest that you will find for any grinder period we'll do the draw for that so here's the way it works for every $25 donation you make to the prior project remember this donation all of that money goes directly to the Purple Heart that means whether it's paying for flights to bring them in for tools for hotel for meals whatever we don't take any kind of administrative fee the only thing comes out of that is whatever credit card processing fee might be which is 2 or 3 percent so if you make a donation of $100 your name goes in four times that's what megan is doing right now if you $25 one time or whatever and whatever multiple of 25 that you happen to do that will be much appreciated and it'll put your name in the draw if you're interested we have t-shirts we have two we have wood is good and we also have wood doing good it's got the logo on the front we have them in sizes small medium large extra large double extra-large and 3x large or whatever they are I can't remember but you can order them now these are for raising awareness the Wii this is not part of our fundraiser for part but it's a topic conversation starter and the only way we find these guys that need what we do is when you find somebody who knows them and tells you a I got a nephew hasn't left left his home in three years and you wouldn't believe how common that is specialist out to Kevin Burris Kevin was one of our combat when the vets came to Jake and I and super Dave last weekend and worked the would show in Toronto and I was sick as a dog so it was great to have him thank you Kevin he's here Kevin awesome is here and any any combat any vet that has been in our class in the past if you if you type it if you say hello just say I was in class number or whatever oh you have a list already so I want to give you a shout out but I don't find out about it until afterwards I go back and I read all the comments and I said oh shoot someone's always there wish I'd have known so I have my wife Kim who's helping us tonight for the first time or did you want to be on the camera honey you trying to say hello did you want to say hello to your mother for [Music] no question could get popped up here tonight right on our show I don't know who's redder Nick doesn't face him and then off to Jake's right is ritzy longtime friend and Ritchie's gonna start being there part-time Cameron so glad to have him and Meghan is here and Meghan is the one that's doing all the entering for our draw and of course we have Frick behind the producing producing and Jake's behind the camera and Oscar season he likes the term pretty I didn't win so if you have questions please speak up and I'll hopefully they'll you'll get their attention and we'll be able to address it am I forgetting anything gentlemen we have a couple Floridians in viewing and they want to know when you're go right okay so upcoming events we are I'm going to be at the Tampa which is actually the Clearwater Florida woodcraft on someone to give me a date place February the last 28th and 29th on the 28th is going to be a special session just for combat wounded vets it's free to them acts I think they've opened it up to all vets because that's the best way to find the combat wounded ones contact the store and on the Saturday we're doing a morning seminar on setting up show you how to set up and sharpen properly sharpen a hand plane and the afternoon we'll do hand-cut dovetails Luthor wants to know why we're not saying about him didn't did he miss it at the beginning when I bragged about how great his idea was for the bench of course how can we forget our loozy yes don't please don't donate on youtube they take over 30% Colonel Luthor needs no introduction to this program he is the heart and soul behind this he's the reason why this has grown and worked as well as it has and he and now he and Super Dave now are the ones that take care of all matters dealing with the vets coming to the workshops Luthor takes care of May June July and Super Dave is taking care of August September October so my hat goes off to both of those gentlemen because they know how much they mean to us fantastic and my second date is going to be the first weekend in March we will be at the Orlando woodcraft and same thing the Saturday the Friday is for vets only and the Saturday is for everybody else I'm not sure what the cost is but you can contact the store that's the Orlando woodcraft and then Seattle on the commune of date teaching in Seattle I think it's the third weekend in March and will it's a Thursday Friday Saturday program Thursday is hands-on beautiful beautiful classroom they're hands-on class on setting up sharpening using hand plane and some advanced planing Friday is going to be hand cut dovetails and Saturday is going to be advanced up tails which would be where we will do half blinds and that's these are all hands-on classes at that at the Seattle store special shout out to two just left me Lawrence my job man Lawrence if you're if you're watching thank you save me okay we're good Nick anything we also have Neil Weatherhead here we have Danny of course from the hardwood Grove danny is stinker with Danny will tell us Paul's here tell stinker and the girls I said Ilocos Nick and I said both and super Dave would like to special shout-out to Felix okay feeling - Felix the Cat and only Danny can give that heavy pass on that message I mean you said Neil Weatherhead wheel wheel nether near Weatherhead yeah real another head Paul Morrison Neil Paul Morrison way down in Australia he's must be up late how do you fall had a great time with some of your brothers today pardon Abby's here Eddy from Utah excellent thank you for going down and seeing the nish boys I really appreciate that struggling students story remember that one I try to forget those did it if somebody else say that some other vet that I forgot to mention you guys true several that may at the same time okay let's move over here we're gonna we're going to I'm replacing my sled tonight I made this one how long have we had this Jake it's probably lasted huh not 12 I'll bet it's been 10 years no it was made in the online workshop what was it alright so it's probably eight years old and it has survived all this time but what's happened is you notice that the gap in here has gotten too big so pieces fall in and because of that it's time for a new one and you've got to have them perfect you don't want any slop in them and you want everything to be perfectly square no this is developed slop right yeah if you wanted if you want to show them what you mean by that well you have so let's let's actually discuss this a little bit so you've got to miter gauge slots on either side one on either side of the blade now these if you've got a decent saw these will be parallel to your blade if not you can go in you win and you need to adjust it and I think I can't get into all that but typically is going to be four bolts one in each corner that hold the table to the base the on the good saws the trunnion which supports the blade and delivers the power from the motor or supports all the pulleys and the gears that take the power from the motor to the blade that's all attached to the base on this saw here it's on this other the saw stop has four bolts but then there's a there's a centering screw on the front so you loosen everything up and then that centering screw there's two bolts one on either side that you back off one as you tighten the other and it allows you to fine-tune that to get that blade absolutely parallel to your to your miter gauge slot oh you need your coat who says one gray what's that no is it Oh ray-ray the operator of the infamous what's it called what's that vehicle that they rode hippo no no no no mule the mule you don't know what a mule is look up vietnam vietnam era era mule i always think of a whenever i see that one of those things alright so you've got you've got to get that squared up and what you can do is you can put your miter gauge in and clamp something to your miter gauge and reference off of a tooth bring that saw up as high as you can get it mark one of the teeth so you want to have it so that it's just touching your your block actually I better do this a little more detailed although I don't have a really good miter gauge that I can reference with where all I'm ready gauges Jake frick you've been taking our miter gauge this home at night yeah practice well I can't believe I can't find one but we can do it on this side cuz this is this is off its gonna throw everything off so what I would do and by the way you don't want any slop in your miter gauge either and this one is pretty tight if yours is loose all you have to do is take a take a punch pardon who said that Super Dave it's probably hit it there take a punch and just hit it with a hammer here on the side and it'll leave a little raised dent and you do just enough until it takes any slop out of there if you put too much you just have to file it off a little bit and then do it again now what I would do is I would get point a scrap of pointed wood I would actually cut a point on this and I would reference it off of one tooth so that it was just making contact with that one tooth and then you're going to take that same tooth over to the other side and over here you should have the exact same you feel it touching and if that works then the miter the miter gauge that miter slots have to be parallel to each other or else you get a bad song and this yeah what's the difference I think the English call it a riving knife and we call it a splitter and I don't know beyond that I've only started using it when I got my saw stopped but this thing is great we were Jake and I were cutting up some mahogany today for four kerf X tens and that stuff was just oh my goodness twist and head off the left-field as you were passing it through and it's only this splitter that keeps that from squeezing over into the blade and coming flying back it just real critical piece of kit on your table saw I never used to use them now I I don't like to not use them all right now I didn't intend to go through and show you how to set up the table saw but I wanted to mention that because one of the soldiers said today that he had a hard time getting his saw lined up perfectly and that may have been the problem so the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna cut out this piece of MDF I'm not gonna talk about oh yeah right sorry thank you I prefer to use this miter gauge only for ninety degree cuts make a separate a separate sled for 45s this one is this one is made for a 45 cut the reason is you don't want to be it'll just wreck your slot and then it makes everything sloppy and dangerous pieces are falling in there and they come firing back at you so first thing we're going well hacks in the middle say a little more things about this you end up splitting this in half so that back piece needs to be big enough that it's goes up beyond the height of the blade at maximum height so it's still holding everything together this piece in the front is just your long fence but it too is gonna get cut all the way through so I have a piece of plywood on here glued and screwed to help support these two pieces together the real key is starting off with a piece of MDF or the base piece now why MDF you can use plywood but I've never had plywood that big sit flat hard enough getting MDF to sit nice and flat and you don't want this moving the flatter it is the better it's going to operate I've got two hard wood [Music] glass Jake hockey Jake yeah so these slots it's really critical that they be in that that they be they fit perfectly in those miter gauge thoughts so we're gonna go through and do all that and get them in position but everything works off this Center core so we've got to first get this piece perfectly squared up so well do you just want to show them how it moves now yes it should only move forward and back see how much slop that's identified so that doesn't sound like a lot but when you're trying to square something up and get it perfect that's more than I want to live with so that's the reason why we're making a new one now the capacity you have here you this is just under 20 inches I'm gonna make it to it is 20 it's terrible when you go to crosscut something and it's 16th an inch wider than what your capacity of your sledges this length isn't that critical but it is nice to be able to have that piece of all supported I'll go 36 inches hello I'm ed I mean a me diff you're hanging out with Luther so our piece is going to be cut we're gonna go yeah I'm gonna go full 23 so 23 by 36 you don't want the thing to be so heavy that it's difficult to move as well so earlier tonight Nick and I lopped a piece off of this just to make it a little bit easier to manage we cut that 24 so I'm not gonna be able to get as much as I want but I want to cut I want to get rid of the rough exterior because that has a tendency to suck up moisture so the first thing I want to do is make sure that there isn't any stones or anything stuck on the factory side I'm going to go assume that the factory saw edge is indeed straight so I'm going to clean up this side first so I'm gonna cut that down to 23 and 3/4 Joe bright says low hey Joe bright Jade Jade yep so Joe now lives in Southern California we get to see Joe whenever we're down there yes what what year one day do class oh the one that we had here yeah yeah I remember him all right so this is our new overarm dust collector and it's turned on so it'll suck up a lot of that MDF dust terrible stuff to have to breathe now I'm using that new Troy how many teeth 2424 two three I like it I like it becomes you it gives you a square bottom keep moving don't stop if you stop it gives the blade a chance to just I don't know whether it runs out or what but it ends up leaving a mark on the side now we'll cut this down [Music] that was 22 I'm gonna cut it down to 23 [Applause] now these two out long edges are both factory so I'm gonna see if this is indeed square and if it is it's gonna cut my work down so you want to do your diagonals let's turn that off second here check your diagonals paint measure from corner to corner that measures 54 and 1/8 and that is not that's 54 in 1/16 shoot by the way I'm using a Tajima measuring tape so if you're gonna if you go if you're wanting to do good accurate work you've got to have good accurate marking tools these are brand new Stanley's and notice something was off we took two of them that were new and over 3 feet they were out was at 1/16 crazy amount so Jake went online and found source dese and we now sell them it's a Tajima marking tape and it's not only bright and easy to see but you've got markings on both sides it's got a really good secure tab and it's got that special cushion right there so if you drop it it doesn't Bend this it's got a shock absorber great tape now we got to solve this problem that's too wide to run through my to use on my my sled shouldn't be having to have a sled in order to make a sled I'm gonna check this one more time that's definitely 54 and 1/8 I'm overheating and that's definitely off 1/16 of an inch all right let's see if we can spot the problem I've got a really good stare at 12 inch square so if you think you can rely on factory edges you can't we're tight in here and we've got a little bit of movement there check this side and see if it's if we were just out on one side no that one's out too when I pushed that when I push the square up against there I can slide it that much farther ok well the easiest way I can think of to do this is to take it over here to the bench and actually use the plane on it on one edge right on one edge we only have to get one edge right it's so easy to just assume that the factory edge is going to be nice and square but not the case this is a little bit high and uncomfortable all right let's check this again now when you do this you want to do it be as accurate as possible so I'm lowering that down ok so it's making contact in here first what have we got that's got a good blade in it Jake that's got a high angle now so here's the problem this edge is on an angle like this so what I've got to do I've got to come in here I'll put a I'll put a mark on here and hopefully you can follow along a little easier do you have a chamfer mdf no yeah I'm not gonna I'm not gonna stop I'm gonna stop at the edge all right so I'm gonna come in little more blade so I took off about six inches I'm gonna do it again and I'm gonna go a little bit farther you know I kind of fade it away in here somewhere see what that gives us now to make it even more accurate I've got a little shim this is a piece of one thousand stock now I've got to keep this really tight that's loose that's tighter so I took off a little bit two months so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to start here stepping stepping in about a quarter of an inch and I'll go down a little bit farther I went right to here go again not starting at the end now I'm gonna take a full length pass try this again just check it with the shim quick question yeah can you use only one runner especially on small sleds or our two runners always yeah you can okay a little bit of a bump right there that was throwing the whole thing off you can use one I've used one I have a couple of jigs where I only use one but if you're gonna if you're going to mill large pieces I would suggest you're going to want to runners tight not so that's pretty tight alright let's go over we don't think it's this perfect we're gonna cut all that off I'm gonna make a cut that's close to what we want so we want 36 inches I'm gonna go 38 that'll allow me to cut two inches off and get rid of that rough exterior but I'm gonna make the cut I'm gonna check it for square if it isn't square I still got lots of material to square it up with why not use aluminum sled runners why not well you can you can buy them you can buy a sled what if we call them he's calling them runners I was thinking of something else you can buy them but we're making it right here in the shop and you can even buy them so that you can adjust them to fit your your slot all right that's 38 inches now I might have Kai cut a bevel on there so I'm going to slip that around the reason is I don't want the point of the bevel sliding underneath the table so by flipping it around I'm making contact up here keep that tight to the fence now just so I have a good end to work off of I'm gonna take chidden you check of the square well I'm gonna take a quarter of an inch off first because that I kind of cleaned that out of square in terms of square this way pardon what's that they couldn't see but we're limited by cord lengths okay we were at forty four and three sixteenths forty four and three sixteenths right on the money okay good now we ten do we just cut Jake remember came out like that so this is one so now I'm going to cut this down to 36 [Music] got a quick question from tom tom tom rounds ya know why do you have to make sure it's square aren't the runners going to square the cut to the blade ah tom hold on you'll see as I mentioned I didn't explain it yet but you you will come to see that everything is going to reference off of how square of the basis okay so that's sitting pretty flat so I don't have to mess with that that's good so I'm going to set this aside now we're going to make our runners and I didn't make those ones full length they don't really need to be actually if we do they won't be able to go all the way out so we'll make them will make them 20 inches so ideal for this would be hard maple and I got out everything I needed except that but that's a piece of birch I want to use that for the I want to use that for that front fence so we need some there's a piece of maple right there dude dude this is a piece of eastern maple I'm gonna snap that off at 20 inches what's it a tree pardon oh this so I have a really good friend his name is Yoram Greenblatt and norm is lives in Toronto he he was one of the very first students way back 20 years ago and comes to the boot show I see him once or twice a year and Yoram was in the Israeli army so he he wanted to give me his version of a patch now I can't put on the apron because the apron reserves are only for combat wounded vets that came out to our class but I told him I was gonna hang it up in the background so that's what you're referring to right yeah turn the air on so I don't make too much sawdust on you folks it appears to be quaint yeah lousy make it a big the shame we don't have any other wood to pick from are we running short oh you know what Jake why don't we use this well we could use the pink ivories but super Dave's probably thinking Jeff Jeff Collins recommended Purple Heart I'm gonna use these axe this is a piece of this is a piece of Osage orange which is even heart a lot harder than the maple and it may actually work better those runners [Music] [Music] [Music] it doesn't need to go through thickness pardon it doesn't need to go through the thickness planer no I'm just gonna cut it off take it down with the table saw now we want these these are 3/4 and width by 5 6 7 16 so I'm gonna go 3/8 so we'll cut those cut a piece off say do a one-piece think I'll just two individual pieces so 3/4 card me create hopefully it doesn't move terribly [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now just to make it a little bit easier to work I'm gonna cut these down to 20 inches now didn't do it when I was over here last time because I didn't want to waste that much bigger piece I'll do these one at a time shut that off I'm gonna bring my I'm gonna bring my shooting board and my plane right over there so I don't think EEP walking back and forth because I've got to shoot that to fit mm are you grabbing your long shooting board yeah one of the many old meets new okay so before we do anything I want to shoot that edge so I want to have a nice smooth hand plain surface and now I'm going to take this down to 3/4 3/4 is to close so go ahead and cut this first [Applause] Hey that doesn't fit yet no sense doing everything twice Oh will trim that one if you're looking for Osage orange I got this from Mel at exotic woods in Burlington where I spend all my money that's and come down some more can't rush this part said shoots because I left I let the I want I didn't have the fence the edge of the board up tight against the fence and grab the air can you hear alright prick over the table saw [Music] you I didn't take long I've got my finger underneath pushing that tight against the table stop man now that one should fit in here as well do you make the runners different widths depending on the depth time here pardon depending on the time of year do you know it's 3/4 it's not it's not a lot so it tends not to move oh look what I just walked by tonight's prizes don't forget $25 donation the Purple Heart project you could take home one of these the real reasons Ranger Special Forces Jesse Paredes the combat wounded marine that started all this marshal Rommel one of the very first vets in our class did a fantastic job on dovetail you want a kid to go in the military you name a marshal Rommel Philip Gustafson who's actually going to come back and be one of our assistants this summer Philip was in our first class from New York cut a perfect dovetail that's where this came from who else have we got up here yeah mark with toe ski who made that flag for me mark is a 23 year Zod Mark's coming back is going to be one of our assistants this summer in July I think whoo that's that sign came from Roger Roger suitors Roger actually is a not only as a marine but he trains service dogs for other combat wounded vets these guys deserve it they deserve tunt I'm a lot more than this this is just a little bit of something we do to help them cope so please be generous actually just do it because you want to to be able to participate like this okay so what we need to do now is we've got to glue these in place they're they're a little bit sticky but I'm going to show you how to deal with that after we have them in but you they're sitting below the surface right now so we got to put a couple of filler strips underneath that'll raise it up just a little bit so when we put the MDF on it'll glue to adhere to this before we then come in and screw it in place so something high I think how thick do we need not much we can use those no I want them exact sorry I want them exactly actually want them to fill the hole so that they're not tipping at all so are these the same thickness where'd this come off of but you just whipped which means they would not be the same thickness oh yeah they would can you yeah you broke the pieces right so we're just gonna cut this down just below 3/4 how their attendance tonight brick how much 550 [Music] okay sink that out of sight put these in there put this in put that one in okay now we want where did I percent it this one about a foot so if we set our fence twelve inches lock that in place now before I do this I want to wipe down this MDF and it is a worse stuff for trying to get the dust off you could wipe it a hundred times and it'll still bring up some dust still comes off I'll stop there so what we're gonna do we're gonna glue those strips we're gonna put that on like so keep it tight to the fence and we'll put some weight on here to make sure that that's enough to keep those two you hold them in place until the glue dries what if I got Jake that's heavy enough close by right here how are donations Megan good fantastic hi your phone died okay this is a mostly just to make sure that these get in the right spot I'll come in and screw them in place afterwards but glue functions like weld in preventing any movement if all you do is screw them in place there'll be enough creep that they they won't be in the same spot for long I didn't want glue to get on the side but why MDF over plywood you got a better chance of having a piece of MDF lay flat than a piece of plywood plywood in in small and large pieces like this just rarely actually lays flat [Music] okay so that's tight to the fence fence is locked fence is parallel to the fence is parallel to the blade it's only sitting over one of the runners okay that's enough to hold it there okay so now what we need to do is we need to mill this back piece and what we're going to do is because the because our piece of MDF is squared up we're going to cut a rabbet if you can look right there we're going to kind of rabbit in the bottom of this so when instead of trying to lay this on there and flush it up with that with chances are you're not going to get it by having a rabbet on there we can ensure that we can pull it nice and tight and it won't move so and that's on both pieces pardon that's some books well it's it really isn't critical in the back I did it didn't need to on the front it is because this is your fence that you actually lay your pieces against so we're gonna cut a piece actually we may as well go full-length if we can and that's 36 well we can't go $36 we're both 33 and a half we'll use it we can no messages no questions nope Luthor's doing a good job is he [Music] [Music] now we want this piece to be straight flat and I cut that because we're gonna cut a little slope on there so we could actually make this a little bit longer than we would have been able to otherwise I'm just going to assume that that's not going to be perfectly flat so we'll face join it that'll give us a flat face then we run through a thickness planer then we'll join an edge [Music] Jim I need in here yes to Valentines [Music] [Music] [Music] okay that's good now we'll identify that as our shoot Jake did I just cut that through yeah that's good that's good I'm alright so this is gonna be the face we'll use to work against this is going to be the reference surface down you know we'll just cut those back on an angle do it from this side since those nothing special about this just looks a little neater any more hellos no no all right now how do you like your eggs that was a question how do I like my eggs why who's cooking eggs just I scrambled actually unless they're powdered eggs and then I don't like those case you're wondering we drew that angle at about 21 degrees how do you like your eggs Nick you don't like eggs birch my wife won't eat eggs either I'm an overeasy guy myself now we got to cut a rabbit in here and I actually would have preferred to have kept this square but I'm having to get stuff done while we're waiting for that glue to set up now we may as well keep this stuff nice and clean by that I mean we'll hand plain it don't know where that hole came from but to come up some strategic reason as to why it's there [Music] you know what that's that miter saw cuts a lot of brass because for the brass for our saws we cut all of it on there so it really takes a beating I don't know what that is i I I don't get sponsored by anybody but I really like Freud blades I think for the money even if they even if they were more expensive I still think they're the best because the best blades and I have if you looked at the tool cabinet over there I have more blades and you should be allowed to own and that includes a lot of very expensive brand names and if you look at my table saw I've always got a Freud in there because that's what I prefer I'm just getting rid of the saw marks plain that top edge so we had fun today we went up we showed a bunch of soldiers and vets how to sharp and use a hand planing you get them to come up and try it for the first time and they're like wow wow this is how it's supposed to work I said yep that's how it's supposed to work unfortunately the average person is never used properly sharpened hand plain what food oh we went from eggs Jake you gotta fix that the thing keeps slipping you that I'm getting shorter slipping I'm getting shorter closer to the earth how does that end actually every week I move it up and in Charles I'm just gonna cut a little chamfer on me did you go with a chamfer because that's what was in the router that's it was in the rotor I just want to break that corner and it was typically you do a corner round winning huh you would typically have done a quarter round would ya either or whatever is in the router whatever's in the right way fluid well if we're using if we're using the trend diamond-plate then we use we use hone right I should do a commercial for that we sell it but hone right little bottle little dab'll do you little bottle what is 500 milliliters yeah no it's nice 250 milliliters it makes it makes a gallon or six liters and it's a it inhibits water from rusting metal actually I may I may reuse that angle and the other one okay so now all we got to do with this is cut a rabbet in there to fit but we need the table saw so we can't use that yet so that's going to be the front piece now the back piece I'm gonna make out of a piece of pine and the reason is I just don't want it to be really heavy so this back piece is going to hold the whole thing together because that and the piece of plywood on the front so everything else is going to get cut is a piece of softwood sturdy enough oh yeah yeah especially in the in the direction that the grain is you hard-pressed to break that so let's process this that's sitting nice and flat now now how long do we need it that one's 16 [Music] I'm gonna go sixteen just because I'm afraid I'll if I if I make it any longer it's just gonna add to the weight of this thing did I already say we're not going to give this away we were the initial plan was that this was going to be the price that we were gonna auction off but then I realized well the odds that that fit somebody that that will fit somebody else's table saw a pretty slim it's something you really have to customize to your saw so that wasn't gonna work I know I got a big bruise there but yeah I'm gonna go 18 chop that how the shooter cooter Awards going Nick huh she cooter II countertop all right I got to rip this and I don't have the table-saw available to me so by the way somebody asked about but one sled this is the jig I use for for cutting dovetail markers so there's only one miter gauge slot on there anyway but I just use that single single slot on here any idea why that's so stiff that's not enough the blades wandering isn't it it's tough for an arrow blade like that to make a partial cut so why didn't you think of it alone and I wanted to keep the height [Music] Dave Ahmed and Troy I think you should just give away the saw stop with the one Dave Ahmed and Troy believe that you should just give away the saw stop with the sled tonight of course but I know somebody who has an even newer one his name would be super Dave ooh what a dig you the top I should've left that plugged in no other knits it's no good so why don't you make it a song yeah isn't gonna make it apply wood no that one was made out of plywood this one's gonna be made out of plywood I'm gonna go a little bit higher so that one is I'm gonna go 5 inches 5 by 5 by 11 5 and 1/2 11 inches what did I say Jake 5:5 note that end the square knot have you ever worked with sinker Cypress Cypress Cypress or is there another name in front of it you said sinker Cypress no I have never nice should I how are we doing Megan we've paid for a vet we did yeah awesome that's 35 yeah we're over 35 now yeah keep going boys Jake and I sat down and figured it out the other day and increasing and I'm not complaining I'm not I'm just saying this because I want your help we figured it out that it's costs us approximately 200,000 Canadian to do the Purple Heart project six times a year when you factor in everything wages for bringing in the assistance the whole bit so if you'd like to be a part of it these these youtube workshops are a great way to raise that money well you wouldn't you wouldn't guess it so I have to tell you I honestly think it's northern white pine I was telling the guys today at the at the workshop I said there's only one species of wood that ages better gets better with age and everyone guesses cherry but Jerry actually was given enough UV light will go from being that deep maroon back to being completely bleached out our living room gets a lot of natural daylight it's all window and anything cherry in that room on the one side looks like you would a mistake it for maple lost all color so here's here's cherry that has satin and had some UV exposure this is cherry veneer cut a sixteenth of an inch thick beautiful and you put a finish on that but it doesn't stay like that unfortunately there's some it's a little darker still but pine just keeps getting that warm honey patina and it only gets better with age Kevin said that Bella says hello Bella it's probably misses us I know she misses super d.c yeah I don't know what it is about him and animals he doesn't always bring out the best in them but he does bring some tonight okay so we've got all the pieces ready how has that been in there how long's that been in there 20 minutes okay good enough wonder what's in that box these are all the off cuts from when we make the dovetail saw handles we saved them because we can cut pieces we can cut blocks for making our marking gauges okay and before I put any before I put any screws in that I'm gonna let that sit a little bit longer and now we'll go in how are we for time does it matter yep five minutes for what that's Megan's job Kim you don't want to step in the juice she gets harassed we're trying to end things early okay so we need a nice clean rabbit so when we put that on hit references against that edge we don't worry about squaring anything up so I want I want lots of reference surface I want a lot of reference surface here so I want the rabbit to be proportioned like that and then this doesn't become tippy if you did it out here that's just not enough material so the back will act as a stop and the flat surface we cut will act as a nice flat surface to lay against here so that when we put this on its standing square this way so let's go any reason why how far down we should go 1/2 inch or 3/4 or even 5/8 I think we'll go 5/8 splashes closed no hockey and Saturday night so we're going to who Pete from Mississippi ah up here we just call him dovetail Pete that's too bad get under cover you freeze to death Jake and I loaded the trailer this morning to go up there and it was minus 20 I thought of him the entire time all right I'm gonna I'm gonna cut this in Incheon at 8:00 so I think what I'll do I'm gonna reference everything off of this face I think this through if we make the first cut down here I'm gonna make the next cut like that that leaves us with a piece trapped so if we make the first cut here it was those edges are parallel you're gonna be left with yeah we can do it this way so this one is gonna come we want 5/8 to the outside of the tooth right there we want to come up are you gonna be cutting both of them at the same what do you mean both like the back and no no okay make sure there's no debris [Music] [Applause] cut that again now quarter-inch [Applause] make sure there's nothing [Music] you can never put your tape in that pocket because you end up leaning on the does it need to go higher adil yeah I'm gonna cut it first [Music] so I went a little bit high but that's okay I'd rather have that then the end of having to go in there and clean out a corner so by being a little bit high when I set that on there I'm guaranteed to lay on that flat surface [Music] [Applause] okay that'll lay in there just like that just for the sake of how the problem is that if I do that what's the name of the remote for your dust collector who I vac I vac comes out of Quebec I think doesn't this for Ontario okay I don't want to I don't want to lose capacity here yeah I wasn't gonna do the same one this was the same way but I will [Music] [Music] [Music] that's what I mean I don't want to leave material in the corner I'd rather go up a little too high and then you're guaranteed that corner or not you don't the come in and take mercurial out of it okay that'll do our backside that's too much what what's too much look pull it up to the top I read 7/8 why do you run it through twice just to make sure that there's any run-out just cancel out any run-out in the blade if the blade runs out a little bit and you leave a little fat area and if you want to see how that happens try ripping a board by running it over your table saw like this flipping it over and doing it again and this cuts never line up perfectly you're always left with a little bit of material in there okay we take this over piece of ply woods over there oh shoot didn't move yeah which one that one III didn't I I didn't want to grab it by that son of a gun send it back well you know what I'm gonna do I'm going to I'm gonna put it back in here but I'm gonna screw down through those where's my little strips right here that should have been given a little longer to set up my fault for rushing it keep it in spot okay those are inch-and-a-quarter is gonna go to the bottom we can grind him off I think I'd rather have inch-and-a-quarter and have to grind the bottoms off than to have them too short and not have enough bite I'm gonna use number sixes so it doesn't have a tendency to wedge those pieces is it my imagination or is it a quiet night no no quite a few what are we at attendance currently we have 568 on YouTube another 20 on Facebook Kim do you know where I have a red-handled shreds channel screwdriver didn't happen to carry it upstairs did you high no no big big rubber black hand over there the red tip on the end please I own three of them but I don't have any last handle red top my wife and one of my daughters why didn't you grab that it are building an apartment upstairs so all of my tools keep mysteriously missing okay so six and a half and this one needs to go seventeen seventeen and eleven sixteenths great did you check the projection of that bit yeah I'm gonna I'm going to it's going to go through the bottom we've got that piece of MDF in there so it's not going to hit the table saw and then I'll grind them off that way I what I've got the food I want yeah full body yeah I want thread grabbing the whole way now is that the right size looks to be now you're gonna drill the screw all the way through take it out and then Griner dollar and a hoe I'll drill these through and then I've got to go through if that wood is that Osage orange is so hard that if you don't pre-drill the actual root size then you risk having it split and it's a fairly narrow piece that runner how our donations cuming have we taken care of soldier number two yet I'd like to tonight as if he hasn't been here in six months he's abandoned us and yet he knows where he hid all the tools before he left wasn't it Valentine's the excuse the reason he couldn't come back yeah unlikely it was right after we mentioned that he would be showcasing his talent got to make sure those heads sit below the surface good question yeah why a rip blade in the table-saw not something like an 80 tooth carbide blade or a combination blade well more often than not I want a square bottom so if I cut a groove with the tables with the with the rip blade that's what I end up with if you use a crosscut blade you end up with this and if you used a combination blade you end up with Batman don't want that I want that so and a good sharp rip blade will do an amazing job cross cutting you wouldn't think it but it does now I'll show you these screws if you haven't already where do we these are my favorite they've got a self-tapping point see this little little uh whatever you call them underneath so they self countersink they've got a really wide thread I'm gonna show you the difference here's what you typically end up with wood screws see the difference in the thread so on particle board or MDF you need more space between the threads to prevent just stripping that out that doesn't give it to you this does works great on wood as well I hate to have to make you sit through all this but unfortunately we can't pause a live episode so we're at six and a half how many do we need to go you really want to drill down through the top yeah the way along yeah it's not an issue so we want about every these four 20 that we made them do you remember yeah 20 so if we come out to here I suggest we go see six and a half and a half inch open source pardon know the sources well I'm gonna give it to you I'm I get I see this guy at the wood shows whenever we go great deal so here's a bag here's a bag of 400 you crises at a hardware store 400 number eight by inch and 3/4 screws for $10 Canadian which what is that in american dollars that would be today how about seven seven thirty seven dollars and thirty cents unfortunately the name's not Tim weaned is it Tim Reid how do they find him on the web crew guy you don't know you go to the wood chips so email me and I'll try to find it I'll try to find his contact information for you but a great deal seventeen and eleven sixteenths pardon yeah do not don't please do not donate on YouTube simply because they charge so much more that's why we set up our own donation page to avoid that YouTube takes over 30% of your donation that's just too much can't live with that all right let's we use that Osage orange for the fences on our shooting boards and it's really hard stands up really well and if you haven't discovered impact drivers oh that's the best thing that ever happened to a screw gun [Music] now I hope these haven't swelled the wood and jammed it in here that's good it hasn't that actually that actually moves surprisingly nice no side-to-side slop so far so good I think we can actually I do have to grind those off I have to do that before I do anything else where's the grinder Jake at the back anything to announce hi what was that board you mentioned today you had and Jake said he's gonna make it River table from faceshield Jake and ivory I think it was pink [Music] what's wrong with the door as it is yeah what's wrong with our hollow corridor you using that power brick yes I know oh hi can he jump got us that thing must be up there at least eight feet maybe it should be you in the one-on-one probably should I'm sure I can oh I can over tikal Dave started on your way [Music] [Music] [Music] now I was doing this again I would have liked to have had more weight on there and ended up with a better glue joint but we saved it so okay that's a little bit proud we gotta get rid of that shoot do you need to get rid of it oh no I don't you're right because it doesn't come down over that yeah well the really serious folks stick around okay let's mark this how late are we we're gonna make two episodes out of this shouldn't what would you do in the second one finish it can these get screwed or just glued both both okay glue it's right here underneath now this one needs to come up from the bottom side but I want to we can clamp it this way but I want to screw it in this way in order yet well I'd like to have it right here because this is words yeah it doesn't really matter because you're attaching it to it yeah while you suggesting the bench well on your bench you could clamp it and it could be it could be hanging down and then you can screw it from the bottom into it right after gluing we went in there we don't have to have that many we have to avoid wherever the blade is so the blade is running right here I'll put any t-shirts actually what I'll do Jake is it will get some of the clamps why don't you add a chamfer for the dust for the watt for the dust ah you know what that's a good idea that is a good idea we can do that really easy too whose idea was it there's a couple people actually that many did most recently it was Aaron Saul Berg so Dave didn't recommend it right now let's think for a second if we cut really thin material we don't want it falling into the chamfer but veneer would be the only thing so what I'm gonna do is just come in here and I'm just going to use the squirrel tail just enough to keep gunk from accumulating whoo no not that I know of 5 cut I usually end up cutting things 5 times trying to get them right if that's what you're referring to never did get that measure twice cut once thing down ok here's my arrow and we put that in run that back and forth a little bit till the glue spreads now I'm going to run these over the top pull that in tight shoot better go from the bottom side in order to get that all the soap that's going to get heavy we've had a couple newbies first time viewers yeah and their new big question is what exactly do you use the table saw sled for in the winter we use it for cross cutting so that you can accurately cross cut large pieces or small it's uh many of us prefer it to a miter gauge miter gauge always leaves you wanting now Luther wanted me to also remind you that he uses william ings v cut message and he highly recommends it we actually talked about it on our new video a little bit do we have to go I'll have to buy a copy of that you should so should everybody else coming soon to a theater near you shop well we hope how else is Fric gonna win that Best Picture certainly won't win any Best Actor Awards one more so are you going to screw this right now yeah I don't know I'm going to look at the time and see what we're able to do we're at one hour and 50 so I put the clamp right here directly underneath there so hopefully it'll pull that in tight right where we need it other words if this clamp was over here and these clamps are over there and there's a chance you're gonna bow it in there but not pull it in right underneath the clamp okay so this would get I put some screws up from the bottom side actually that's all we really need you don't need anything from the face side and going into the edge of MDF is a bad idea anyway now we've got to put our back piece on we've got to put our plywood piece on to support that cut moment did we go all the way through it that'll sit in there just like that alright here's what we're gonna do this this piece of one here I'm gonna finish this off camera and then I'll save it for the next the next time we do a live broadcast we probably in three weeks or somewhere around there no no we're gone remember four weeks five what I'll do is I'll show you how to tune that up to get it to fit perfectly we got to go in and we a scrape this the the slides and get it'll - it'll actually work like a charm and then I'm gonna do the cut through and we'll test it out and try it alright so in the last five minutes we'll we'll do our draw do we need to give everyone a minute to make final donation do a there's a copy last month the prizes go show the prize okay come on over here Jake can can you make can you unplug you can't make it over to the wall of fame Kenya okay talk to them for just a second I'm gonna go get a picture I can sing a song now I can these are the windy River 4-piece workbench casters then you'll notice that this is actually the Wood River grinding wheel and that's because it was the last one that we had we saved it for this occasion these bench dogs are actually stolen from Dave's bench he doesn't realize that yet because he doesn't use his bench a lot okay I want you to know who you're helping so this was class April 2018 I'm just gonna highlight a few of these people this is Yvonne Yvonne was a frontline nurse so if you think of mash think of Margaret Houlihan she was a major she had six tours one in Kosovo Kosovo Surrey in Iraq and two in Afghanistan I think it was in her last tour so in Afghanistan there are no roads so when they set up a hospital and the closer they can get to the frontlines a better chance to have a save and the guys that are getting hit so everything is done by helicopter so when the helicopter comes in this is her words telling me everybody pitches in to help unload the helicopters because they're vulnerable when they're on the ground and I'll just tell you the last story she one of her page her patients always told have you ever hear the whistle run and the whistle is a sound that a mortar makes when it's coming in close she heard the whistle she got up she was at her desk or doing something she got up to run and the mortar landed five feet away and when it exploded it covered her head to toe in shrapnel the only injury she showed me was there was a little wee scar right here on the side of her wrist but on the back side the ulna had all blown out so this was all titanium and you could feel the screws in there that the bone started to grow over she suffered a severe TBI that's a traumatic brain injury she's a poor woman would she start to shake at time that she couldn't control she was a wonderful person she treated these guys for years and then she became a victim of what she was treating them for but she better than anybody else has understood this process give you a highlight over here so this guy really became a good friends of ours this is Dave super Dave and that's Dave also known as COO dave was in Vietnam I got shot three times as a result of field surgery ended up with gangrene he's figured they'd never dick white did put his guts back in right because he couldn't lay down he had to sleep sitting in a chair upright but not only did Dave get injured himself in Iraq but I've his nine children he lost one boy army Dave served in in Vietnam of his nine children he lost one boy in Afghan in Iraq he had one boy lost both legs in Iraq and he had one boy who was still serving in Afghanistan at the time that he was here at the class these people deserve this they deserve everything that we could possibly do for them all we're doing with this program is we're introducing them to what you might call a distractive therapy something that engages their mind and their hands and their eyes and takes their mind off the demons that they're constantly battling unfortunately the government is not doing it they're drugging them and that's I'm not one to be speaking I don't know what I'm talking about all I know is what I see the results we get when we do this so we're gonna keep on doing it and we're gonna do it more of it but I need your help it's an expensive process but I don't care about the money I want to help these guys regardless I tell Jake don't ever not plan something because of money the money will find us we plan it we do it and the funds will come so a big salute to those of you who come back when the veterans out there we do so we do appreciate what you did okay so prizes over here so if you're gonna build a bench in the near future which everybody needs to we have our beefed up you see how these work they're fantastic just take a quick look out here in the mess you see this so the problem is that as you buy them they're too light and just the leverage of pushing down on that would bend them we go over a bump and they Bend and then they're all over the place so what we had to do we had Wilford come in and beats them up so that they're now they're good and sturdy no no worries we'll bending them get the bench where you want it flip those up so easy to move around prize number two is the shoberg elite two thing that the shoberg vise that's the vise that we use in all of our benches out there takes 15 minutes to install the best part of all is that because it has rectangular rods instead of tubes you can take all the racking out that was the bench moving by the way not the vise there's no racking there's two adjustment screws in there that take eliminated completely takes 15 minutes to install to your bench I guarantee you it is the best vise that you will find of that type and that's going to include two one inch aluminum bench dogs and the third prize is our right here is the CBN wheel can't stands for what cubic one nitrogen so instead of a regular grinding wheel that you have to balance cuts extremely slow burns this thing will cut through steel and it was incredible speed keeps it nice and cool Jake came over today and showed me he'd planed a brand new primary bevel on a plane blade and didn't even ground it and it didn't even so much as get hot in fact it was barely warm it all the heat of most the heat goes into the wheel so it preserves your tool that you're grinding and we're also giving you the Wolverine grinding jig attaches to the base besides your beside your grinder so there's the platform assembly that fits in there everything locks with a cam easy to adjust fantastic piece of kit so these two are one price the bench dogs and device another price and the mobile base is another price so $25 donation to the Purple Heart project go to our website Frick I'm sure is put the link on there numerous times of the $25 with exception of the two or three percent that the credit card company takes all of that goes to the expenses of bringing you guys in males and females we cover airfare we cover hotel we cover meals each vet goes home with approximately four thousand dollars Canadian worth of premium hand tools same stones that I use the same planes that I use the same chisels I use the same saws I use same marking tools same everything I don't give them something that I don't use myself Angie oh my goodness Angie almost forgot so here's Angie Angie is Ken's cousin ken works here Ken's out in BC by the way Ken hello if you see and Angie who is confined to her room but Angie does all of the packaging so when you buy a shirt from us it'll be neatly packaged there'll be a little gold seal with an A on there that stands for Angie and she's part of our team she's an integral part of our team hi Ange hi Lynn and they make the absolute best gluten-free sugar-free apple muffins you've ever had and Angie stays right there cuz she keeps an eye on us to make sure we're doing stuff right thank you give one more quick announcement about the video and Florida classes yep so coming up to be released within the next couple of weeks is there a long-awaited Cosman bench video that's the bench I told you about it they are made out of a sheet of MDF and a sheet of Baltic birch you could actually do it in a weekend too to be safe it's it's it's an easy build with minimal tools but when you're done you've got a rock-solid bench and if you win you're gonna have a rock-solid vise to go on it and we're gonna be teaching in in three locations in the next month we're going to be in Clearwater Beach Florida a last weekend of February we're gonna be in Orlando Orlando Florida the first weekend in March and the third weekend in March we're going to be in Seattle - all three are at the wood craft stores okay I'm out of stuff to say you ready just ready to do our draw hmm free just one second did I miss any vets that say hello to all right Luther took care of everybody yeah there's been great Luther is fantastic I'm doing it okay come around so we'll do the the mobile base first the grinding wheel and the platform assembly second and the the bench vise third he called Nick good one munches cold feet the old ones what was our what was our viewers up to tonight all right so just there's a huge list so you didn't think that it was just those names in the end are you ready to pick here's the first one the winner is girl Hughes girl Hughes name sounds familiar Earl Hughes just got the mobile base Earl Hughes the mobile base now the next draw is for the CBN wheel and the grinding jig build lines fill lines graduations bill so bill won the CBN wheel and the grinding jig and last but not least for the for the Vice bill lines didn't refresh try again Steve Suggs oh I know Steve gratulations Steve let's tease the good customer good supporter thank you gentlemen appreciate your support we'll get those up that's stuff out to you on Monday actually on Tuesday sorry Monday's a holiday here any final words we'll let you know when our everybody that you know what we do send them to our website let them check it out and hopefully you'll find that one guy that's home or that one combat when the vet sits home suffering in silence and we can help them okay I did thank you everyone for being here tonight oh yeah what was our our donation our Purple Heart donation total tonight was go back to your excel there Megan I can calculate it quickly just based on how many lines you have there right there all right drumroll thank you Nick and Erica for coming you drove a long way preciate your help do we know there's still time okay we're getting there can you add it to more yeah so so our our grand total is what's the green say what's that who is it he didn't find homes hidden Pines homestead I do a lot of benefits for veterans coming home coming back home and have no place to go consider a shout-out and thank you for all you do thank you hidden Pines I wish I knew your name appreciate what you do there's I often think that we're emptying a lake with a spoon but if enough of us get our spoons working we might actually see that Louisville come down a bit all right so the grand total was $5,200 $5,200 YouTube workshops it's
