this is whistler blackcomb since 1966 it has been one of the premier winter resorts in the world and it remains one of the largest ski resorts in all in North America and since 1998 Whistler mountain bike park has welcomed visitors reaching on average of a hundred thousand per summer down it's 150 plus miles of trails so what better place were not only the largest annual mountain biking festival on the planet but also the biggest slopestyle competition of the year this is joy ride at Crankworx Whistler and you are watching the Red Bull Signature Series [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] greetings everyone and on behalf of joy ride at Crankworx Whistler we want to recognize the Squamish and lil watt nations for welcoming this incredible event on their traditional territory I am Sal Masekela your host of the Red Bull Signature Series and allow me to welcome you to the mountain paradise that is just north of Vancouver BC Canada this is whistler mountain resort it is the best of both worlds in one of my favorite places as it is a winter and summer wonderland and today it is not just about the fun as we're gonna turn our attention to the top slope style mountain bikers in the world that are taking on the toughest most difficult course on the Crankworx world tour now this tour consists of four stops starting in Brooke to Rouen New Zealand then traveling to Leggett's France Innsbruck Austria and then wrapping up here at its home base of Whistler BC this year the riders face a colossal course that makes Joyride the biggest competition of the entire season the favorite will has to be the hometown hero and a record four-time winner Brandon Seminole however he fell in New Zealand and he skipped the European portion of the tour which leaves his potential success here questionable others include 2016 champ Bret reader and the only rider with a shot at the Crankworx slopestyle Triple Crown Nicolai regard kin as well as a Swedish contingent including emil johansson was also the current world tour leader our first competitor is about to drop so we're gonna check in with Todd Harris and cam McCaul for the call thank you sound once again our Canadian neighbors have opened the door and welcomed us into beautiful Whistler I got asked you as someone who's been here multiple times why is joy rice so special to these athletes the sport of slopestyle mountain biking was born right here on this slope 14 years ago is just a little experiment but now it's blossomed into this full-on World Tour it's the longest running slopestyle mountain bike event and that's what makes it so prestigious what an absolute Mecca if the fans have made their way to what is camp that got to be the best course on the planet now remember get two runs and it's scored out of 100 but this can be a daunting task today daunting for sure the anticipation has been building throughout practice all week it's about ready to get kicked off the judges are looking for six particular things one amplitude how high the riders go above the features degree of difficulties another one they're looking for tough tricks but not the same trick all the way down they're looking for a variety an execution means feet right back on those pedals landing straight course use they're looking for a well-rounded run with difficult tricks on difficult features and of course this is Joyride so they want to see some risk-taking they want to see riders doing things that have never been done before that's how you win joyride it is a tall task indeed on one of the most beautiful courses you will find anywhere in the world so that's the format let's take a look at the season so far and the chain of events that led to our initial competitor a man with many firsts unders belt but today he'll have a new one being the first one to drop in everybody here is so excited to see what the king of Joyride has up his sleeve he always brings secret moves semmen oak has gone off course that's on Brandon cement to repeat here in brown braided 7up the defending Rotorua champ unfortunately can't go back-to-back here in New Zealand for the first time ever there wasn't a Canadian courts own podium the Crankworx world tour is basically four stops and for epic locations there were definitely some riders that were missed at Crankworx Rotorua slopestyle reader out with entry at Rotorua I hurt my knee over the winter and I spent six months off my bike I kind of went into the season feeling like I had nothing to lose well deserved victory therefore Bret reader welcome to Innsbruck our third of four stops and still no sign of Brandon seminar to stop this [Applause] brands been off the radar this year not going to his usual events table obviously not competing a lot but there's any event to buckle down and work hard for would be this one it's been almost half a year since we've watched Brandon no contest there's this huge window where who knows what's been going on behind closed doors basically they go off of like over all points and so they use that as kind of dropping order even though he's like four-time champion and always they do to watch he's like lowest guy on the totem pole as far as points go so he's the first guy to drop for him to be first a job that's kind of exciting because it could set the tone for more honest so today's event should have a strong start to say the least but before we get things rolling let's start over to the fourth member of our team here's Tina Dixon to learn more about the conditions well first and foremost I want to point out that this arm sling is not a fashion accessory I did break my collarbone a couple days ago riding my mountain bike it happens and also it's been a really dry summer and it just creates for those unpredictable conditions but I will be okay so moving on let's talk about the contest there have been some amazing battles between Bret reader and Nikolaj reg Atkins so far this year you know Nikolaj is going for that coveted Triple Crown something that no one has ever won before and he told me he's excited for the opportunity and Bret reader he is the defending champion of this event there is a lot of pressure especially here at joyride it is the biggest slopestyle event for mountain biking and guys I've talked to the athletes before and they said this event especially is almost 60 percent mindgames and 40 percent actual riding so keep your eyes out for Bret reader now the one variable that everyone is also looking at is Brandon seminar you know he really hasn't been competing so far this year he's just kind of coming out of nowhere really he's been working on his video parts but guys he's the hometown hero he's won this event four times before and he will be dropping in first something we normally don't see from him guys Thank You Tina and cam early votes for Tina Dixon on that Red Bulls signature moment for showing up today and coming to work yeah Tina everybody gets a taste of the action out here in Whistler well starting joyride with Brandon seminar that has to be the most exciting way possible to kick this thing off nobody knows what he has up his sleeve he always brings something new to the table that's how he's won this event four times I'm sure he hasn't been asleep at the wheel he's been training and private at his own training facility at home the four-time champ is now on course he kicks it off with the one eight and a half cab off the top drop straight into a back flip double Talent Oh Anna Clark seven twenty over spinning the left-hand hip and that's an opposite course 720 we've never seen that from Brandon salmon hook into an opposite double tail whip and now balancing that out with a regular double Talent well this is a classic Brandon seminar crun already at the midpoint of the course here at 360 tail up out of the cabin into the cannon log so a straight backflip you know she's looking for some sort of variation on that so he's going to have to make up for that here into the final feature the on/off box truck driver up a backup I'll what look like he put his foot through the handlebars I was expecting to see the backflip one footed can-can that's become pretty standard these days but I want to see the replay I think he went over the top of the handlebars with that right foot and gives you an idea just owed a beast this course is this run was so clean from top to bottom so there's the trick that took him out last year when he fell off that bridge he was setting up for that and here's a new one we've seen Brett reader used that to win last year the opposite quark 720 but here's where I think he was holding on to the secrets off the final flat drop yep that foots going through the arms over the top of the handlebars that's a back flip candy bar off a flat drop and we've never seen it in slope style mountain biking you need some serious flexibility to be able to pull that off Todd and to do it on the first run of two and the first run of the event Brandon SEMATECH four-time champion wasting no time going to work here at Whistler and what a performance and it gets him in eighty nine point eight Oh so the judges certainly are warmed up and that is a tremendous score well that's got to be the highest first run score we've ever seen kick off a joy ride competition who can top it that's the question Great Britain's Matt Jones we've got his run and many others when we enjoy right Frank whoops Whistler you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series we have a massive crowd here in Whistler and one knew through that crowd is the legendary Joyride slopestyle course let's jump in and take a closer look at what stands between the riders and the finished corral here today this slope style course is the baddest of them all it's taken on a personality all its own it's a vicious course it's tough to get through due to its long length it has 12 features on it and it's ruthless with how difficult it is to link all your tricks on every single feature starting out two options a flat drop on riders left in a kick or drop on the right leading into the second feature of the course this jump shoots you straight to the moon a lot of riders struggle with that because it's straight up it doesn't have a lot of out now to get technical a left-hand hip is what we have for the third feature tough to do your trick when the landing is offset from the take-off second straight away gives us what we call 4-pack to trickable jumps in a row gives an opportunity to put two tricks together that are complementary to each other speaking of complementary we have a right hand hip to balance out that left hand further up the course now middle of the course we have a whale tail it's an elevated feature with a step-up in and a step-down out this big log sticking out of the ground we call that a cannon and yeah it's really hard to do tricks off of that so difficult tricks will be rewarded big-time if you can pull it off on that feature and now the last feature on the course this thing is classic we call it the gatekeeper a step on/off box and if you're lucky enough you play our cards right the gatekeeper will allow you to cross through the finish line corral it is an absolute work of art making its way to that massive crowd and Brandon's seminar is the first man that has gone down with the eighty nine point eight oh that becomes the mark to beat you are looking at Matt Jones of Great Britain the 23 year old now set to drop in on his first of two runs and cam as you were going through that what struck me was just how long that course is at how exhausting it's got to be for these athletes very exhausting and Matt Jones is one of the riders who got bit by this course last year it was his inaugural appearance at joy ride his first event on the Crankworx world tour and he didn't finish a run all three events this season on the Crankworx world tour he still hasn't finished a run so right now his main goal has to be crossing through that finish line crowd he's doing exactly what he needs to do so far not wagering too much we've seen him throw away runs earlier on the season with tricks like double backflips and 720's but he stayed consistent right now getting great extension on his tricks only a few more features to go who the bakflip tuck no-hander on the cannon that's definitely gonna score high but nothing counts unless he can cross that finish line a 360 up a flat drop flip down beat finally done it so Matt Jones top to bottom clean like Brandon SEMATECH but was it as technical as Brandon's run that scored in the 8090 I don't think it's gonna hold a candle to Brandon's run but in its own right it was very strong look at the extension on that backflip Superman he had his legs virtually horizontal that's what the judges are looking for for the execution of that trick arms all the way off the bars on that 360 tuck no-hander so maybe not trying tricks that are as hard as what he has in his repertoire but putting them down with great execution and you know getting through the finish line with smaller tricks is better than crashing out on the third jump so it's great to see that he's learned how to pull that off mission accomplished for Matt Jones is it score comes in now is a sixty five point eight Oh which has him in second place and one more run to go and he's with Tina yeah thanks guys and matt is down here with a smile on a face something we've been waiting for him to do all year talk to bottom just how does that feel so good I'm honestly just a stranger to this sensation and getting to the end and this what I came here to do run number one's locked in and excited to see what everyone's got I've got another run in the bag so thanks for cheering me on when I got to the bone best of luck with that second run thanks Matt so Matt completes one mission that's completing the entire course his score once again comes in as a 65 800 back to the top we go this is Reed Boggs at a hurricane Utah just 20 years of age and remember the mark to beat still Brandon seven oaks eighty nine eight well a really interesting scenario here for Reed Boggs at a hurricane Utah this kid was all number one woke up this morning not thinking he was gonna be ride in this competition Matt's Frederickson crashed about 10 minutes before the finals began broke his collarbone and there you go Reed Boggs got the nod and he was looking very at home this definitely looks like he's the right guy for the task right now at that back flips help straight to the pedals and this kids one of the most diverse and well-rounded riders out there a young kid but he'll be performing out at Red Bull Rampage later this year too so he's got the speed does he have the technical aspects in this run to bump up into Brandon Seminole territory he's definitely rising to the occasion if he can cross the finish line right now a lot of riders have trouble doing that so I had a respectable score there we go 360 out the last drop to finish it off he's done it still the alternate Reed Boggs at 20 years of age comes through what a performance for him and getting a late nod and still being able to pull off this kind of run just take a look at the precision of his riding physically and just to think mentally how difficult it must be to not know you're riding the competition until 10 minutes before all the fiasco starts in the crowds roaring he's been following the crank word slopestyle world tour all season just earning up the points and you know what I think he's here to stay and a score comes in and for Reed Boggs it will be a 67 so he moves into second place great run for Reed but many more top riders getting ready to drop in will anyone be able to catch brandon semenov we'll find out when we return to joyride at Crankworx Mossler you're watching the Red Bulls get your series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series enjoy right at Crankworx Whistler here in beautiful British Columbia Canada our next rider is Ryan Nyquist but while we're away here a couple riders that we missed leading off with Diego Cobbers Ozzy of Italy the 23 old dropping him with a good score cam of 43 but unfortunately did not get a full run yeah man Diego has been killing it all season he has so many huge combos but right here you watched him miss his hand on that back foot bar spandex up his arm actually got knocked off of the handlebars by his leg so he'll be looking toward run number 2 21 year old Anthony Missouri at a Surrey BC on his first run now a very uncharacteristic air out of Anthony Missouri here backflip tail if he can do those in his sleep or right now getting hung up a little bit twisted and having to get rid of the bike there so another rider looking toward run number two to fix up those mistakes and it's worth noting the mark to be eighty nine point eight Oh put up by Canada's Brandon Seminole four-time champion here and you talk about a legend in the sport of BMX it's this guy 38 year old Ryan Nyquist Ryan Nyquist just a year ago it was remarkable to think that he was competing here at Joyride this is a teenagers and twenty-somethings game he is 38 he's got three kids he learned a new sport while still staying relevant in BMX and now he's not just looking across the finish line this guy has been getting top fives all season he's got his eyes set on a potential podium his air awareness may be second to none when he gets on a bike he's the definition of veteran when it comes to jumping bikes through the air and yeah this course is as big as it comes but he's really adjusted well to become a fixture on this world tour there we go 360 one-handed X up into the whale tail just chucking two bar spins in that 360 we call that the double truck driver now into the Canon a truck driver off that booze lands a little old rotated but hangs on now here we go a back flip bar spin up on top of the gatekeeper a 360 down smooth run for Ryan Nyquist and Nyquist is stoked on that run you talk about the speed and the consistency and the fluidity of that run that was amazing yeah I mean just a year ago just 3/16 off that last drop he said it was the biggest thing he's ever done now it's routine for him let's take a look back that 360 one-handed X up into the cabin and now look at this two bar spins he does not catch the bars halfway he just throws him lets him rip and catches him once they come around their second trip around the Sun now off of the cannon this is where I thought he was about to throw it away he catches the bars realizes he's over rotating a little bit but counter steers with his body is head whiplashes a little bit but still holds on somehow not a lot of time between landing that backflip barzmann and taking off of that 360 no room for error but ride Nyquist putting it down with precision so the pride of Santa Cruz California 38 Nyquist with a full run he's would Tina yeah thanks guys and Ryan you told me last year that that was one of the biggest and scariest runs that you have ever done well how would you rate what you just did kind of scary it's always nice when you're at the bottom and it's like hindsight but when you're going through it you're terrified man you're just just hitting each hit and hoping you land it so to come down here first go especially have to last you're not making it so I'm progressive man yeah that's awesome okay there's a couple areas where you can clean it up can you talk about that yeah had some bubbles out there a couple rough landings but uh I mean like I said psyched I made down on get some add living you know through the grind so hopefully run to I can improve looking forward to it thanks Ryan guys and a smile on his face because Ryan Nyquist score comes in is an eighty two point six oh so Nyquist goes into second place behind our leader and right now it is all branded seven oaks eighty nine point eight oh but how about that cam and 80260 for Nyquist so impressive great to see definitely a fan favorite for everybody standing alongside the course out here Simon Godzilla Poland's set to drop in on his first run the 25 year old one of the few guys decides to rock a tank top out here do you advise that young man if you're Simon God's yank you can pull off anything you want this kid has carved his own path to the top he's been standing on the podium earlier on this season doing unique tricks like that backflip Superman sea crab he's not a follower he's an innovator so yeah he's not wearing the same shirt as everybody but he's also not doing the same tricks he does tricks that have huge extension just like that right there Todd that massive Superman legs going straight up in the air [Applause] so Simon gods Jack out of Poland definitely capping off the best season of his career right now a big finish at Joyride would be the best way to do that a Superman seat grab off the cannon he goes down and I was just about to say he's never completed a joyride run and he will have to wait for run number two to get that honor well let's savor some of the goodness out of this run look at the extension on that backflip Superman sea crab only guy in the field doing that out here so far today and there we go we had a few instances where he was demonstrating that unique style that Superman right there bike vertical legs pointing to the sky but here it is a unique trick to do off a cannon feature but you put yourself in a very vulnerable situation there may have been a little bit of a crosswind right there so he will have to wait for run number two to try to knock off Brandon Seminoles 89 80 he comes in with a 40 2.20 breeder rugged Caen and Johansson all waiting their turn this is joy right at Crankworx Whistler you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series and joy ride at Crankworx Whistler here in Whistler Canada I am your host Sal Masekela now in 2013 four-time winner of this event Branden seminoff only had one title under his belt chasing down his second win only one man stood in his way Sweden's Martin SodaStream now five years later SEM enough he's chasing down a record fifth title and it is two other sweets max Fredrickson and Emil Johansen that are his biggest threats to his chances a seminar is still the dominant force here in Whistler but definitely sees the Swedes over his shoulder and they're charging fast yeah I mean Crankworx joyride is pretty emotional for me in the way that it kind of ended my career in one way this is Sweden's Martin Souter struck the final feature here we got all matters in need from Martin Soderstrom only good enough for second place today I snapped my tip in fib and it took me out for about a year from the bike now I've been fighting back but I've never really felt the same way as I felt when I dropped in on that last run I decided to to end my my social career so I will I will end it with two second places in the FMB World Tour and two second places in joy ride when he broke his leg he his injuries changed the way of his thoughts about biking it would have been sad if I would have stopped and then we wouldn't have any stops of scene left in Sweden but now Emil the max came up they made my decision a bit easier he's probably the guy I'm still looking up to because he's made us younger guys realized that we can make it from Sweden moving up and watching Mark Martin Soderstrom always something that inspired me a lot he's been my mentor at the last couple of years and he is really being like explaining for me and showing me how it is to be a professional mountain biker which is great about go further go this point Gordon stick around vaca the chestnut mostly Goleta Swedish riders are usually pretty stylish those kids grew up riding with Martin and they saw him basically create his own path in the sport I mean his style was was unlike anyone else it's so cool to see like they're not just all the tricks it's like let's figure tricks out but then like put our own touch on it and all of them have done that I don't know if it's an obsession mood style is more like perfection I would say you can't like you can claim it if it's a 100 percent done it needs to be fully done to be a trick I would say and that's the way it should be I think in a few years he'll be standing on top of the podium pretty consistently and those are some flattering words coming from the four-time champion Brendon Ximena cuz the male makes his way for the start gate but where's the other half of the Swedish contingent from our own that we sit at Downton Tina Dixon yeah Todd I don't know if I've ever done an interview with someone who has the same injury as me max Frederick's and someone we were really looking forward to see you ride you took third place here last year but what happened I was just warming up for the event did a front flip and ended up short when I were to bars and land on my shoulder so what's a clean break they said two weeks until I feel fine and then five weeks until I can crash on it again so I'll be quick similar to what the doctor told me as well all right so let's talk about Emil Johansson I know you guys have been riding so much together and training really hard he is coming up what do you expect from him well he's looking super consistent out there and I'm sure he's gonna be if he learns to run that he wants he'll be on the podium for sure best of luck getting better and guys we'll look forward to a mil and both of you heal fast as we head back to the top of the course this is eighteen-year-old Emil Johansson of Sweden now the trick here is cam he's got to land the run he wants and that's a tall order with 12 massive features stand in his way oh and I know he can this kid gives me goose bumps it's so obvious that here's the future of slopestyle mountain biking look at that execution backflip tail up catch he throws the barspin and there we go a 360 bars from the downside tail with the action just doesn't stop straight into the four pack with a court 720 now backflip bar spin a tuck no-hander what does he have for us on the right hand hips a bar spin the tail up big combo on kind of a small feature they go packing it in barspin a bar spin back up 360 tail lifts down now this kid just doesn't seem to be fazed by all the fiasco the huge crowd all the pressure he's only 18 but man does he ever look like a veteran and he is flying through this course a truck driver down every single feature in that run was perfect this is going to be interesting remember the mark he's trying to beat is that of Brandon summon ups eighty nine point eight Oh on run number one cam this is gonna be really close that was so clean and so fast well you usually see kids in their first two seasons just trying to figure it out but this kid he's had for 30 seconds he's got his eyes on the lead right now he caught that back lift helped so early he had time even after throwing the bar spin now a 364 has been a down side tale he makes it look easy in slow motion but he's the only guy out there doing tricks like that on that hip bar spin to bar spin back and just take a look at how early he catches his pedals on the 360 tail whip down the step down so much more difficult to do that trick on a step down than it would be on a step up now a double bar spin up and the 360 bar spin down smooth through the finish line just better and precision out of this young kid well max Fredrickson likes it will the judges like it emil standing by with tina we talked to you earlier and you said that you hadn't quite figured out your run so at what point did you figure it out most parts I would say I can be nervous for not making a dumb first run so happy to be here you know we saw a lot of conservative runs earlier but you didn't seem very conservative out there trying to keep myself Paul and you're very good at that guys keeping himself calm thanks a mil so now the judges have their say and the score comes in as an 80 6.80 so emil johansson still calm and now in second place with Brandon Semin up to leading the way Nyquist sits in third but no one should get too comfortable because coming up we'll have Nikolai Bragg at Caen and last year's champion Bret reader will we return to joyride and Crankworx Whistler you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series this is Joe Radek Crankworx Whistler from British Columbia Canada I am your host a massive Keller not since 2010 as a US rider won this event when one mr. Kim Zink stood on top of the podium since then Canadians and Europeans they have been the dominant force now with the Triple Crown within reach nikolayeva Gaskin is one of the favorites to win in 2017 however Jarrett has been filled with nothing but disappointment for the young American who's completed only one full run in his history at this event will this be his year failure is always part of the sport it's not gonna stop you from from keep going if you want to do a trick you know you want to do that trick and you know that there's gonna be failure involved God can absolutely tearing up this course at just 18 years of age can he hold it together he goes Whistler's always a rough one and over the years I haven't had the most amazing luck mate what's got in the four pack this is what he loved oh he's linking it to the cash room oh it looks like something's wrong it looks like a flat rear tire took all this speed away there's so many things that come into play and that's why no matter what you think about when you're at the start of that run you know oh that gets blocked out and it's just you versus the run [Applause] the court 7 coming up short a trick that he's been doing at every event so far this year with flawless perfection he just wasn't making the distance even in practice he did it hung up and then was just like I think his mind is like I'm just gonna power through it now Nikolai really needs to start holding things together he didn't make it past this step up last run let's see if you can get that cork 720 he's trying it again again that jump it has been his nemesis so much disappointment if you knew that he had a lot in store for himself and the fans quite a rough one last year with the crashes but yeah hoping for hoping for a good year this year well the time is now for Nikolai reg Atkins just two more athletes to go here and run number one members a to run format but the leader right now with an 80 9.80 is Brandon Seminole of Canada now this guy you know has the skills to get a winning run here can he do it big-time Todd if I'm Brandon seminars right now I am absolutely shaking in my boots this kid is on the form of his life and despite challenges at this event in the past he's looking like he has what it takes if he can stomp his most difficult tricks on this insane course 12 massive features Nicola redacted now through the first quarter Castro but the big question is what did he have for the second jump in the fourth back he did it hey that's the trick he needs to stop if he's gonna take out Brandon salmon uh building up the speed onto the whale tail nickel-iron jackin that's what he needed to do need something different than what he's done up above in the past he's repeated tricks but right now he's got a well-balanced diverse run going from a double tail off the cannon a barzmann oh you says he gets on his mine what happened that was the run he needed to do and to throw it away on such a tiny little feature bar has been on that small jump what a shame well Nikola is gonna hike back up and get another run at this but really there's no chance of him going into the lead here but Kim I gotta ask you what went wrong there well you know what he's putting it all on the line it's so tough to do those tricks especially all in sequence this course is 100% exhausting this guy's a competitor but also showman he's still going for it friends about coming up short off the drop I'll just laying it all on the line well the damage was already done as we look at this one more time up top near perfection well he's just putting his heart out on the table here that 360 tail up over rotating on the hip so technical trick on a technical feature but it doesn't get any higher degree of difficulty right now then the frontcourt 1080 he calls it the twister and he's the only guy out there doing it these days then the double tail up huge combo on the difficult feature on the cannon log there and at this point everything's looking fantastic we're thinking we may have a new leader until the wind comes from the left knocks him off his bike mmm well what a tough break it's great to see him get back up and hopefully he's okay after that second crash well the score coming in for him it's gonna be a 44 so he will have to put everything into run number two he's would Tina Nicolai I mean how do you put into her says the word frustration even describe how you're feeling I mean you had the run going yeah quite a devastating thing but uh you know the winds always a factor out here just to point a little bit deep got a little bit caught by the wind on that little bar spin trick you'll feature but uh I mean the run felt like a dream I stomped all the things that I was real nervous about but uh yeah it gets really tiring once you get down to the bottom so you know I it's quite devastating when you do so much hard stuff and then you kind of ruin it all in a little thing but uh that's the way she goes that's the game you got to stay perfect and yeah I just got a try to go back up and perform because uh yeah that's all I can do or they in this situation and one thing I know about you is that something like that is a motivating factor yeah hugely motivating I mean even as soon as I crashed I wanted to get right back up and finish the rest of the run but uh yeah quite a motivator frustrating devastating as you said but uh it's the way she goes it's not easy out here already best of luck second run thanks Nicholai guys and that is an understatement it is not easy out here so reg add Kim looks to run number two and there's just one athlete remaining here in round one of two that is the defending champion Bret reader oh man look at this guy like you said he won last year but Brandon crashed both runs had mistakes and you know Bret reader just loves these rare opportunities where he can square up against Brandon salmon ugh after watching practice all week I got my money on Bret reader so the 23 year old out of Vernon BC is now on course run number one all started off with that cab as well 180 and then 180 off adding the bar spin though we didn't see Brandon send it to them so he's already got a new move for us opposite corks 720 on the hip that Brandon did regular and then there's his regular version on the straight jump Oh back to the double tail and barely climbing back on the bike into an oh come on who's going for that opposite double tail he's been doing it all day in practice so like for Ag Atkin the wheels come off for Bret reader but what a start look at how he started that off so that's what we call the 180 to half cab off exiting the drop backwards and throwing in the bar spin so he's off to a great start and here's this back flip double tail up where I thought there was no way he was gonna get back onto the bike but catching pedals right before the tires touchdown and this just frustrates me because I watched him all week doing opposite downside double tail ups on that hip but when the pressures on all those fans are watching even the routine becomes difficult he gets hung up there and the score coming down will not help his cause that if any champion checks in with a 33.6 oh so Bret reader makes his way back to the top of the course as we reshuffle the deck Brandon salmon up run number one lays down in eighty nine point eight oh but cam back all the potential out there is enormous he's got a lot of bullets to dodge right now so he's sitting up there strategizing definitely no celebration yet for Brandon salmon ugh run - when we return to joy right at Crankworx Whistler you're watching the Red Bulls Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series enjoy right at Crankworx Whistler here in beautiful British Columbia Canada Todd Harris alongside cam McCaul tina dixon as we get set for run number two and here's the situation we reversed the order Brendan summative went first he now gets the honor of going last because he has the top scored 80 9.80 which is going to give him a lot of room and a lot of opportunities to watch and see who can try and take him down so now we're gonna see those lower ranked riders after the first run dropping in first if you think back to Anthony Missouri's first run he had a crash on that backflip Taylor so opted in for the kicker option here on the start featuring getting that back hooked up so definitely dusting off the cobwebs and handling that trick but coming up is the jump that he crashed on before backflip tailed straight to the pedals this time he's back on Form there's a new trick for him this year the cash roll now this kid burst onto the scene at the young age of 15 in 2011 and now he's turned into such a veteran competitor a great strategy it's tough going into second run not having to score in the bag but that cannon he's making a count in his final opportunity it's the final feature from Missouri 360 down and he stomps it with the pressure on gracious I can pull together good thing they got that fence there so he was sitting on a twenty five point eight oh and cam this is gonna be a huge improvement so there's that new trick for him this year it's a seven hundred and twenty degree rotation but it's on a forward axis really hard to learn new tricks and even harder to stomp them when it counts but it really counted here for Anthony Missouri throwing away his first run all the pressure was on this final run and last year we saw him throw it away on this final feature but this year it was bolts 360 straight to the landing beautiful landing for Missouri his score come in now with an 84 - OH so he moves into third place so a podium position as he bumps Nyquist down into fourth so it is still Brandon seventh on top with at eighty nine point eight old remember he will go very last as everyone takes their shot at the leader you're looking at Brett reader who is the defending champion just saw him moments ago with that thirty three point six so cam he's got a refocus forget about what happened and come out here and just lay the rundown well this is a treat for us getting to see him drop in again so soon after his first run but he needs to stop everything win back-to-back joyride titles cork 7.00 you see that jump is hip he did a perfect 720 but you need to over rotate in order to connect with that landing he needed about a 750 degree rotation so just not enough on that spin let's take a look back at the start he did that 180 to half cab off the start drop he missed the barzmann this time but on a trick that only two people are doing there's a little wiggle room he could have recovered but here's that 720 you see him eyeing up the landing and you see the angle that landing he would have needed to turn a little bit more to the left a hard impact landing sideways causes his feet to fall off in that derailed his train the score 2160 does not help that if any champions cause so there will be a new champion in 2017 can anyone take down Brandon salmon up and the eighty nine point eight Oh we'll find out when we return to Joyride at Crankworx Whistler you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series this is joy right at Crankworx Whistler we've got Italian Diego Cavanaugh Z about to drop in but first let's look back what we miss while we're way including Simon gods yet to twenty five-year-old from Poland on his second run so Simon gods yet crashed and run number one meaning he had no score to fall back on so all the pressure comes down to run number two here II performed all those tricks that caused so much excitement in his first run but this time he put it all together through the finish line flat drop flipping the last feature great score in the bag for Simon God's egg he went from a 40 to 200 to a 70 8.40 as we go back to the top of the course here and you are seeing Diego right now getting ready going through final mental preparation we've talked about in for cam when you have a solid score in the bank already from run number one you could take some chances but a lot of these guys because this course is so tough have that luxury and like gods yech Diego converse austin finds himself in that same situation but look at that a backlit barspin - teyla doing a more difficult version of the trick that took him out of run number one this guy obviously flourishes under pressure a front flip talk no hander on the second jump of the four pack man if he can put this one all the way to that cannon he told me about a tricky house plan there and I can tell you right now it's never been done before so he's crashed a lot on this feature in practice so he needs to calculate perfectly if you can get that trick the front flip bars been off the Khitan Diego counters Aussie under pressure putting it down the Italian rider definitely performing when it counts most run number two without a score in the bag so impressive yeah he's sitting on that 43 this should be a massive improvement so backflip bar spin to tell if he crashed on a backflip barspin 2x up and run number one so this trick is way harder but now one of the hardest tricks we've seen all day off of one of the most difficult features of front flip with a bar spin you see it every once in a while on a perfect trick jump but never before on a Canon log the 360 up and flat drop flipped down to seal the deal for the Italian rider Diego counters Aussie while having the composure to pull off that front flip with the bar spin and then to finish up on such a huge feature well done by Diego and the judges appreciate it to the tune of 81.6 Oso Diego is into the top five meanwhile back up top Brandon seminar eighty nine point eight L on his first run that has been the mark to beat and no one has been able to catch him we'll have much more but right now we check in with Sal Masekela thank you my friend Todd with ten days of celebrating mountain bike culture and competition here at Crankworx Whistler and over 40,000 fans and competitors from around the world there are lots of words being said you want to get involved yes show and catch up on all episodes from every season this is joy ride at Crankworx Whistler from Whistler Canada and you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series enjoy right at Crankworx Whistler here in British Columbia Canada Branden Semih is sitting on a three point lead over a meal Johansen but we'll see if our next competitor can shake things up here at joy ride he definitely has the potential do it of course Nikolaj Roy Gaskin had a smoking hot run on run number one until the very end so cam you're thinking he puts it all together does he bump Brandon oh it definitely has what it takes I wish you could have put down through the finish line so we could have seen what the judges had to say about it but lucky for all of us he's got another chance here the fastplant 360 drop off of the start hour into the one-two-three triple tail on the second feature that three whip yet again Oh dropping a pedal can he recover into the first job of the four pack the Castrol blowing out the back tire man have we ever seen that before from him out here is he just snake-bitten on the blow outs or what let's try to figure out what happened here Todd he had that 360 tail up but his feet never firmly pressed to those pedals and they fell off you know I got a chance to ride a bit of this course in practice and I know this jump right here you have to brake for it so I think he over compensated for that pedal slip by not braking causing him to go long and over rotate that casserole blow up that back tire what a shame for Nikolai rag Atkin well they'll be no hiking up to hit that jump again the tire in the back is blown 25600 does not help his cause so he stays with one number one meanwhile Brandon Seminole can use to dodge some of the best in the world as the current leader in the eighty nine point eight oh this is Matt Jones currently sitting on a sixty five point eight Oh trying to find a way to put enough sizzle into this run in all twelve features to knock off Brandon summit up the leader this is the first time Matt Jones has ever been in this situation he has a smooth score in the bag now he gets to play around a little bit the double back foot he over rotates well thank goodness he did a safety run in his first chance smooth score in the bag but that double backflip is gonna limit his ability to improve upon that score let's take a look he popped real high so great amplitude points but right now he realized he tried to open up but it was too little too late you can see that back tire is not speeding anymore he tried to grab that rear brake to slow it down but Matt Jones day done so he goes for it in the name of progression but Matt Jones unfortunately will not be on the podium and again Brandon Seminole Kasane is this really happening did I lay down a winning run on run number 180 9.80 has stood the test of time so far Reed Boggs would like to knock it off and what a story that would be from alternate to now in the final and he's been climbing the ladder all season getting consistently higher scores and higher rankings at every single event he wasn't expecting to be in this competition oh no he was so smooth and fluid and run number one I was not expecting to see that mistake well let's take a look back at the only two features he was able to ride here and run number two back foot barspin on the lip option on that start tower into the double tail up he had it clean and run number one but right here same thing as Nikolai just missing those pedals feet falling off and this course is such a rhythm section there's no room for error 3184 the young man from hurricane Utah meanwhile Brandon Semin good in the shame with that 89 he and Rhine Nyquist run to coming up this is the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series enjoy right at Crankworx Whistler here in beautiful British Columbia Canada Emil and Brandon wait their turn is our next rider prepares for his second run but first let's take a look back at his first run that we missed while we were away this is Tomas Lemoine the Lemoine is known for his signature style his amplitude and his ability to carry speed like none other big combinations all the way down like this 360 in word table almost like an unturned down borrowing some style from BMX and into the last feature his final opportunity to get some points and potential good ranking here at Joyride he does exactly what he needs to do smooth 360 off the last drop so lost got a 70 9.60 on that run number one and here he is now set to drop in on run number two now cam he talked about this he's got some Bank money to play with because he's got a good score he's in the top six right now what does he change if anything this is that situation that every rider wants to find themselves in a good score of the bag and an opportunity to experiment a little bit and try some stuff that maybe wouldn't and again the top third of the course is just throwing all kinds of havoc at these riders yeah I have the truck driver with two bar spins so the double truck driver off the start step down going for that lip feature but here's where he was putting a lot of chips on the table and going for broke the backflip double tail whip a little bit less a flip rotation more of a spin rotation caused that front wheel to be high upon landing and a little bit of over rotation that's it for Thomas Lemoine so he will hold on to that first run score which was a seventy nine point six so meanwhile Brandon summit sits and waits this is 38 year old Ryan Nyquist at a Santa Cruz California a BMX legend who has transferred his skills now onto the mountain bike and he has taken to this sport so well oh he's a fixture on the world tour right now he's got his own style doing tricks like that 360 suicide no hander now back up suicide no hander to barspin he's running a front brake on his bike allowing him to take his hands off while doing those spins so there we go back up one-handed eggs up we're having a second jump in the fourth back a 720 bar spin so he's had two 720 so far in this run and opposite 360 suicide no hander so unique trick and he's doing it both ways there's that 360 double horseman again coming up short can you have speed for the cannon oh good he has even smoother on the cannon and run over to than he was before but he's got to stop this final 360 drop he gets it again well that's definitely gonna prove upon his run once for Nyquist was sitting on it 80260 he had a few baubles in there isn't enough to take down some minutes 89 well he added a lot to this second run that he didn't have isn't in his first run but he also had a couple bobbles too let's take a look back at the replay of the highlight that's the 720 width of our spin he packed to 720's into this run and having that one with the barspin variation is huge and there's another trick that he missed in run number one an opposite direction 360 suicide no hander now into the whale tail he came up a little short in and luckily he was able to sneak a petal to try to get enough distance to get out barely summoning enough strength and how he had enough speed for that cannon log I don't know but the backflip bar spin going right into the 360 off the drop he landed far on that backflip bar has been so definitely snappy precision for Nyquist and Ryan Nyquist gets an 84 80 back into third place on the podium with two athletes to go Nyquist is in 30s now staying by with Tina Dixon to talk about that second run well Ryan how long have you waited to do those tricks and those combinations in a competition run yeah I mean this is really only important place we have this many hits on one course and that's Joyride so you weight pretty much all year to throw a run down like that and so to basically be able to pull a first run that gave me a good score and then to have that second row and be able to proven to stomp that like just amazing like just that feelings like a comfortable right there was like enough to have my weekend just be amazing and then to have the score come up and put me in third it's just like Oh like just mind blown you know like this insane feeling like I don't know I just I never imagined I'd be able to be on podium at jaws I never thought it would ever happen yeah speaking of the podium you're a virtual lock for that there's only two more riders to go Emil Johansson Branden seminar I mean that's going to be the podium we just don't know what order those other two riders will be how would you describe that I mean at this point it's just like I don't have to wait to see if anybody's gonna knock me out I'm just solid third place so yeah like this celebration begins now basically yeah for sure Congrats on the podium thanks Ryan now many folks can win 238 to crack the pour team enjoy right but Ryan Nyquist has done it we've got a crown a champion who will it be Emil Johansson or Brandon SEMATECH we're gonna find out momentarily here in beautiful British Columbia but right now let's set it back to Sal Masekela in the studio Thank You Todd Harris the big question who's gonna catch Brandon seminar is he really gonna get his record fifth win but we have one competitor between him and that fifth win and that is Emil Johansson who seminar dubs the future of the sport will heat up set the champion we're gonna find out who that champion will be here for 2017 when we return here to Whistler British Columbia you're watching the Red Bull Signature Series welcome back to the Red Bull Signature Series enjoy right at Crankworx Whistler here in British Columbia well you could cut the tension here with a knife right now and for a little more on that pressure let's send it down to Tina Dixon when it comes to knowing what the athletes are thinking I talked to cam Zink because you've been in their position before they're in their second runs right now what is going on in their minds I think everyone's got a little bit different strategy than I used to do I mean brand is kind of doing the same deal he leaves more in the tank but I used to just lay on the line no point coming here for second third or you know trying to secure top ten I was always going for the win and again leave all the cards on the table but most these riders are trying to get a solid first run like like a meal you know he came down with a heater but it looked like he had a lot more in the tank you know another big event for these guys outside of Joyride is Red Bull Rampage what's similar what's different it's a whole nother world you got to know how to ride a bike but it's a whole nother animal you build your own course you can go as big as you want as long as you want but here everyone rides the same course but it's the pressure is different the crowd here seems to motivate me there's not as big of a crowd a rampage because in the middle of nowhere but it's it's it's it's all nerves and then trying to try to sort yourself out and be able to push through the nerves and something to point out guys Branden SEMATECH is our current leader right now and he is also the defending champion at Red Bull Rampage thanks so much cam guys Thank You Tina and cam for that perspective so Brandon semeth will sit and wait and watch a meal Joe Hansen of swim the 18-year old drop in if he can top the eighty nine point eight L then Brandon will have to take his final run cam if he doesn't Brent is a five-time champion well a lot of pressure on a meal and this kid deals with pressure very very well can he put it together there's that 360 inward table off the start drop and again against that back lift a lift to bar spin we added a bar spin to that the 360 double bar spin to down side tail up I'll tell you what Todd it's hard to even call these tricks he's doing them with such rapid-fire execution 12 major features that he is just slicing through this course bar spin the tail up on the hip now the whale tail always weighs heavy on the judges scorecard he gets the 360 tail up/down brand and also did that in his run but can Emil Johansson do it where he's trying to add something there a 360 bar has been looking for the one-footed can there we go final feature once he got out the last drop the 360 version smooth through the but will it be enough this is gonna be close and I think Brandon semanas 1/8 9.80 or better so we heard a meal in his own words in the video piece earlier saying he strives for precision and perfection that 360 double bar spin to downside tail couldn't have been done any better and he's the only guy out there doing it now he had to improvise a little bit with that back foot bar spin but he recovered nicely he had that bar spin a bar spin back up the step up and a 360 bar spin down same way he ended his first run but there's a lot of improvement in there so the score comes down will it be enough [Applause] and here it is it's an 84 68 is not enough Brandon Seminole is a five-time champion at Joyride how impressive out of all the years of this competition there's only a couple people who have won it more than once two guys who've won it twice cam Zink being one of those paul basagoitia being the other but brandon seminar in those records with a fifth win he's got a full hand worth of those Super Bowl rings [Applause] [Music] this year's joyride saw to athletes worthy of the signature moment both gave it their all under seemingly insurmountable odds Brandon Seminole and Ryan Naik was both achieved the impossible today Brandon securing a fifth win while being the first to drop and Nyquist the BMX legend not only surviving the course as the oldest competitor here today but also stepping on to that elusive Joyride podium for the first time ever at age 38 while Brandon snuck in a world's first candy bar flat drop flip Nyquist may have just put in more rotations than any joyride Run has ever witnessed congratulations to both Brandon Seminole and Ryan Nyquist for receiving the Red Bull signature moment what a way to win an event you lay down the best run of the day and then you sit and wait brand inseminate the five-time champ is with Tina Brandon this is your day you dropped first we never see you do that kind of walk us through that and your run including the new trick yeah I mean I don't know remember the last time I've ever dropped first maybe I never have so that was like extremely stressful usually you watch a few dudes go and you get excited and you kind of like almost like bring some blood into your body but I was just like felt so cold turkey so so thankful I got got a pretty good run in the first one and I definitely missed a couple little things and kind of clean it up but it's just like it's such a long course and like like we saw today so many people crashed a meal you said earlier that he is the future of the sport how would you sum up him oh absolutely the future like give him another year or two to like fill in the blanks and I bet he'll be the next unstoppable dude in the in the circuit all right so this you've won this event before this is your fifth win here a Red Bull Joyride what is it about this event we didn't see you compete early on but what is it about Red Bull Joyride Whistler that brings you out I mean it's my hometown it's the biggest slopes out of the year so obviously if I'm gonna do a slope style event it's gonna be this one congratulations on this win guys so a fifth victory for Brandon Seminole of Canada and to think it came on the very first run of the competition insane never doubt that guy he just showed the world yet again that he's still the man in charge and he now has five champion rings a full handful I think it's gonna be a long time until somebody takes that title away from him so as the massive crowd departs Whistler they've got to be satisfied in the show they saw as Brandon Seminole lays down the very best score on run number one and it stands the test of time eighty nine point eight Oh the winning mark what a day we've had here in Canada as we say so long from Whistler BC and sent it back to Sal Masekela in the studio Thank You Todd Harris and thanks to all of you for joining us at the 2017 edition of joy Radek Frank works Whistler in beautiful British Columbia Canada sheer and utter dominance although who started out the season in a disappointing 17th place missed the last two stops on the tour and then had a drop in first the local boy crushes it congratulations to Brandon no pressure seminar getting a record fifth red bull joyride title as well as Emil Johansen and the old young man the BMX legend Ryan Nyquist rounding out that podium once again thanks for hanging out with us on behalf of our entire NBC Sports crew including Todd Harris cam McCaul and Tina Dixon playing hurt I'm Samus akela and we will see you next time [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
