Is Sonic Generations STILL Good?

after what many consider the prime years of Sonic the Hedgehog he fell into a pattern patiocrity and struggling to find an identity from kissing humans to invading storybooks and wielding swords to finding wisps to becoming a Werehog which I still haven't played yet so please don't kill me also regardless of how you may personally feel about these games the franchise as a whole was in a pretty lackluster place however there remained one game that was a faint light in a very very dark cave Sonic Generations this was the game that introduced us to Classic Sonic and established the Sonic Multiverse way before it was the cool thing to do each Zone had 2x one classic 2D side-scrolling act and one modern 3D platforming act similar to those in recent games it was also produced in commemoration of Sonic's 20th anniversary featuring a dossier of his Greatest Hits Green Hill Zone to City Escape and more It Felt Like A fitting way to celebrate two decades of Sonic or one decade of Sonic in one decade of Japan oppression depending on how you look at it now it's hard to believe that this game was released 11 years ago and I haven't played it since so does it still hold up to its praise let's find out and be sure to subscribe because one sub equals one chili dog for Sonic I don't know I couldn't think of anything cute just do it all right so Sonic Generations it's been what like damn it's been like a little okay did I really just run into an enemy frame one wouldn't be a Chalk video unless I did something stupid like in the first five minutes of a game damn it's been 11 years since this game came out maybe almost 12 years what was it a February release date and uh we we like this game right I feel like I've heard nothing but good things about Sonic Generations I've never really heard anyone say they dislike it I want to see if it holds up and I haven't played it since launch on the 360. it's gonna feel new again to me because I don't have the brain capacity to remember all of it especially because I only really played it once and that was did I really don't have the momentum to make that Loop and soundtrack is a guaranteed Banger because it's a Sonic Greatest Hits game they remixed all the good stuff do we have a drop Dash in this game no I guess not come on hold it pick up that dust Sonic all right that's enough you're eating up the ozone layer I mean the game still looks good hit that sign look at this probably in a rank because I'm perfect why are you so close oh we got a perfect bonus say a rank told you and this is when they introduced in quotes Classic Sonic for marketing [Music] oh you scary damn it you ripped a hole in the universe you'll be here any second hurry Sonic doesn't know his own birthday what's going on party or something surprise oh pretty solid looking cake and now let's all celebrate Sonic and absolutely nothing is going to go wrong at his birthday party you what oh here it comes he's like no my meat tube he's like I don't care what that is my chili dog it's gone thank you it's like allowed me to show you your greatest hits this is your life Sonic or at least it was and now say goodbye to all your friends taking you back to your roots [Music] it's like I want to go too send me to denied sounds like uh where am I where am I this is the white space Sonic grab the knife it's like this place looks weirdly familiar I don't remember it all being made of paper mache though all right let's enter act two of question mark question mark question mark it's definitely not Green Hill Zone nope won't give you that inclination I have to unlearn everything that I learned in Frontiers that's right I got shamed publicly for uh not boosting through enemies and doing homing attacks through all of them because I played so much Sonic Adventure [Music] I know how to boost shut the hell up I'm missing like the best pass probably I'm playing hilariously bad right now so I'm sorry to everyone who's played this game 80 times in the last decade oh didn't mean to do that well maybe I did wait why am I why am I trying to get out of the way I'm trying to mask her some enemies never had a doubt Tails you've been restored this place looks like something sucked all the life and color out of it totally strange No Stranger Than rescuing genies and Magic books or receiving aliens in an Interstellar amusement park I'm more concerned about finding our friends hey Sonic I saw something over hey Sonic what's that over there that might be a good place to check out I'll be back soon wow you weren't kidding when you which happens to be next door to Green Hill Zone that can't be good for the environment it's kind of weird how they are able to keep it so green with all the pollution but you know what let's do act two first because we can play this in any order we want shut the hell up AMA Chow oh that's right the entire game has a banger soundtrack my controller died excuse me fellas you guys are a pain in the ass in Sonic too now I can just boost right through them I'm not grinding the side rails yeah I don't remember chemical plant looking much like a rave sounding like one I don't want to touch that if I get like a skin rash or something so we have a whole ass 2D Sonic why do we need 2D segments uh yeah this definitely wasn't a chemical plant oh there it is I missed that one God please don't I don't want to drown not in three dimensions we go I like how if you run fast enough you rise above the water and then run on it going fast feels really good in this game not like that trash Heap Sonic Colors that's right I said it do something about it I think you guys like Sonic Colors because you've had Stockholm syndrome for so long all right now we have Frontiers and we need Frontiers too then again I haven't played the least yet so I can't give my opinions on it but you guys should totally comment for me to play Unleashed you know to engage with the video yeah probably an S rank I know my S ranks come on give me the bonus there we go hey Sonic uh the place is on fire as you can see in the background we might want to leave convention oh chemical plant zone oh yeah that all right act two uh or I guess act one I played this version of chemical plant zone thousands of times I know what it's about I love Classic Sonic he's so cute if you could talk what do you think he would say ah you think Sonic's entitled to any kind of compensation for having to run through chemical plant zone he's just watching TV one day there's a commercial that's like are you a blue Hedgehog have you spent any time at all in chemical plant zone well you may be entitled to compensation I'm actually kind of cracked at Sonic Generations I say as I just miss a red star ring that I totally didn't need didn't need that until we hit the x button I know I gotta hit the x button and where all the bosses at watch this another S rank all right bump it up bam you're saved Amy oh they put you there because you're toxic I get it she's like I'm back thank you Sonic look at that Sonic's just falling asleep he's just he's waiting for you to subscribe or like the video whichever one you haven't done yet all right a little uh Sonic 3 Knuckles action here with Sky Sanctuary I should probably get those stopping on a time is so weird because you're kind of used to skidding look at Sonic just bouncing to these enemies are they the heart the artificial name for them same as Sonic Mania or is this a completely different enemy that just looks similar to hard-boiled heavies oh okay that was supposed to be a spin dash we happened to stop it on a dime Mr Crab stops on pennies I can smell the money already kill the enemies in this game just it feels pretty satisfying like oh come on man yeah I know I know I gotta do oh God I thought I was gonna just fly up and Crush myself oh okay why are you gonna do me like that you're supposed to be a bouncy Cloud it's warning me here that I can fall to my death as if I didn't know that as if it's not going to happen oh they just the enemies got a little extra poof in this game I'm doing the opposite of going fast I'm platforming like this is a damn Mario game I know I know I know oh god oh crap God okay all right S rank your head s for subscribers oh come on still good though and just like that nature is healing check out the grapes I bet Sky Sanctuary has a pretty good Winery speaking of wineries my friends and I went to Vegas recently and uh we went to Gordon Ramsay's Restaurant Hell's Kitchen and uh we ordered a nice fancy meal we tried the famous Beef Wellington the waiters like would you like a bottle of wine and I don't know he went on like this five minute Spiel of like what kind of wine it was and where it was from so I uh took a sip of the wine I was like yep that's wine all right I don't know it all tastes pretty similar to me this wine is Central Coast this wine is a Petite Syrah this wine is from a high quality producer and it's two thousand and it's milk I don't have the advanced palette I guess yeah it's Sonic don't fall off the stage we gotta get an S rank here to make up for not getting an S rank in X1 [Music] oh so the right bumper left bumpers for a finish I was like what is it asking me to do I I just I feel like I'm gonna fall off the stage I mean I I probably am oh God no yep I boosted the wrong way I just wanted to go to the glowy ball thing I can say for certain that the modern controls in this game are just after playing oh God they're so tight but not like good and after playing so much Frontiers this is like it's not it man where are we going uh I don't know like play testing games in this era of Sonic the Boost era did we not like I don't know want Sonic to be able to move smoothly I think that was one of my biggest issues with it that was disgraceful I apologize everybody but somehow still almost got an a-rank first Hangouts uh unfreeze Knuckles thanks for thanks sir you were a PNG what is this place it's so white and creepy what do we unlock the challenge act Gates oh hello casino night hang on that's DLC we'll do that later find three boss gate keys to unlock the boss gate and face the the invincibility challenge get the Invincible power up to get past the hordes of enemies and reach the goal in time I'm a chow can you just leave me alone if I drop the invincibility do I do I just lose the challenge probably not you need to keep it because you have no rings so you can't really touch the spikes sir these Springs don't launch as fast as they do in classic Sonic games he'll lied to this is not the classic experience that I know all right I think we're kind of close oh there it is try again I don't need to try again this one's got the keys I gotta beat My Doppelganger I found you faker ow go come on the bar at the top is it's very stressful when you fall behind you just have to watch your doppelganger just oh crap oh crap he's not having such a hard time he's also not I'm pretty sure there's a huge modding scene for this game too like new levels and stuff I haven't really explored it I am playing on PC how is that only a b well don't matter if it was a b they'll World like I need to know what the next step's gonna be let me know which one would you rather see I feel like most of you are gonna say boom because lost worlds I hear just kind of eh while boom is notoriously bad speaking of Boom we gotta get out of here Sonic best to ever do it so does it matter if I would have picked with a modern Sonic or is it just like that would have been a classic Sonic think I figured it out one tail says to the other Tales places in this isn't something to do with that big thing that just kidnapped Eggman yeah it might have had something to do with that giant some more stages here starting to get to the GameCube stuff the second Chaos Emeralds thank you all right man this is a radical Highway there's no traffic traffic is not radical not like the Staten Island Expressway that's the opposite of a radical Highway try not to run into the things he says as I run into things Sonic right through the scaffolding oh look at that perfectly timed I don't recall this mechanic but that definitely makes this a lot more fun come on that's an S rank it's an S Plus rank performance oh it's speed Highway my sincerest apologies speed Highway not radical games for Content you don't know what Peak is I'm just kidding everything I upload is Peak I remember playing through this for the first time being so happy so I was like damn right that is one of Sonic's best stages all right go up the hill here's the truck again that is some reckless driving let me tell you where'd you get the buzz saws the gun truck's gotten some upgrades since the last time we've met think I have a full Boost bar all right oh wait it's good nope nope nope you can't do that give up the pursuit done I'm sad it's over now sorry we still have more good Adventure era stages to come and now Rouge is saved thanks Big Blue that's the first time I've ever been stolen why'd they make her sound like that in this game got a little Seaside Hill man I haven't played Sonic Heroes in a long time I just really enjoyed the final boss fight in Sonic Heroes maybe because what I'm made of is a banger track I don't know I don't think it's as bad as everyone says but then again I haven't played it probably since the mid-2000s I do remember Sonic Heroes coming out and just like I was so sure that we were gonna get Sonic Adventure 3 and we didn't and we never did until the year 2030 when Sega is like just just give it to them ready please we want shock to shut up all right okay hit the jump button one too many times it's not accidentally homing attack off the stage that'd be fantastic you know what's funny like I vividly remember that part of uh of this stage [Music] come on man why would you put that there what's even the point oh my God it's a really satisfying area if you hit all the right bumpers and you don't die look they're taunting me I know make video games that control better look through this oh God uh Turtle where I mean overall this game is better than any 3D Sonic game in the last decade with the exception of Frontiers you know what longer actually longer going back to 2006. and the stage is long why is this stage so long it might be time to revisit Sonic Heroes sooner than later you know Sonic Heroes will probably end up being a game that I used to like and no longer do because like I said it's been so long since I've played it that it probably has not uh withstood the test of time very well like that's Mario Sunshine for me Mario Sunshine I loved especially when it first came out I guess just it had been a while since uh we had gotten a new Mainline Mario game but going back now really anything after the first couple stages is garbage oh thank you Free Willy for the assist okay just this stage was hell ah and I gotta do it five like tracker uh is it you're my hero so as I'm recording this uh there was an article that just came out from a interview with Azuka saying that there's a big wave of more Sonic content coming next year that's not Frontiers DLC or actually no this year technically I keep saying next year like we're not in 2023 like the years aren't getting shorter like I'm wondering what they're talking about what's going to come out probably another 3D Port like I feel like they will probably Port the storybook games because those aren't really available anywhere oh here's the last key which one does it belong to or do I have to do both of them I think Sonic's advanced games could probably use a collection or something or anything that's on handheld that we just haven't seen in a while [Music] when's the last time we heard about the Sonic Advance games how come on they got me they got me with the Frontiers thing is there okay yeah this game is fun it's a good Sonic game but why does modern Sonic have to control like absolute dog [ __ ] I feel like if Sonic Team could figure that out like they're on the right track with Frontiers if they could get it even better I feel like they're they're really on track for something great where do we get the car I gotta say it's it's kind of hard going back after having tighter controls and playing stuff where the controls aren't as good open the Wormhole let me see him show me show me his face here he comes open your heart might also be top five I remember playing this over and over again because supersonic's story was its own thing in Sonic Adventure one and you could just go back and replay it here we go go up him we get like all up in his guts and then we all like poke his brain isn't it like a Sonic Symphony tour happening this year I want to go because I'm pretty sure Crush 40 is going to be there so I think what I'm trying to say here is uh I like Crush 40. oh he Angie now he's like I'm pissed I'm gonna raise up all these platforms cause the guy who ran on water couldn't possibly scale these I'm also gonna line up some of these uh these red rings he's like ow my brain look how tiny his brain is they have to play in Frontiers though uh I think I just heard of Coco but it's not a Coco we know that yeah give me the S rank boom you brought back quite a bit of this world oh okay you see the pop-ins there what is going on here comes the Multiverse demon [Music] monster sure didn't like that Emerald those things have come in handy in the past we've already got a couple but we need that Emerald I bet you can bring that Chaos Emerald back just like you brought back our friends make sure to bring some crayons though we're gonna color it in first seven emeralds I mean how many do we have so far we have like three four so yeah we have four all right now we're coming up to the uh the modern stages we've passed all the good stuff okay here's the only way that uh anything Sonic 06 is tolerable I did a homing attack so much in this game getting so many s ranks you know I think is really the death of me it's just using the homing attack too much because it's chaotic because it'll launch you in any direction that it wants to why did that what see if I go slower which is not really the point of a Sonic game probably better see like I should do their homing attack there instead of wanted to throw me off the building I have a serious question is this anyone's first Sonic game I feel like it'd be kind of a wild choice for someone's first Sonic game to be like an anniversary collection just like this game is made more for people who have played a bunch of Sonic games I mean this or anybody really you know I'm not trying to gatekeep here in fact more people should be playing Sonic games but I just I want to know if anyone has gotten into Sonic because of this and it has forced them to go back and play other games all right into the Firestorm let's do a couple tricks first because there's always time for showboating [Music] come on come on come on damn the game's like hang on let us restore this dilapidated City for you the x button spin dash seems like it's the tool for Speed running just you get so much torque bad lava doggy was that not the way I was supposed to go it took a second I thought I transitioned to like a new part of the level I'm like oh sick my game froze what is happening yes so uh my game was just like huh let's freeze right now it makes sense because sonico 6 is bad this transcends the actual game it is invaded Generations it's like yeah I just want to remind you this game sucks or are there just problems with the uh the steam Port of generations that I don't know about is this a thing okay are they moving the goal post why would you do that no I outran it Manning jersey is crazy this time of year I I touched it you saw that right there's where's the damn post where's it where's the damn post get the cannon get me out of here okay it's right there you gonna move it again say better not you scum Blaze you're free because they kind of forgot about you I wish I hadn't needed your help Sonic but thank you all right Crisis City down now we move on to Rooftop Run save our boy vector vector if you could hear me in there don't be afraid I will save you I've never actually played OG rooftop run but uh Rooftop Run is like a pretty goaded track haha [Music] all right I'm gonna try to be better at this game I say and then I I missed the one up all right goes through The Guillotines why do they have those there aren't we supposed to be in like Italy oh that's right I gotta use the bumpers I'm not used to using the bumpers to maneuver left and right hang on I gotta make up for missing that last one so all right all right now we're moving now we're moving now it's moving bust this thing up with their own people come on you want to try to just spilling Rings all over the place okay that was fun I think I enjoyed that stage the most out of any stages so far so we're gonna do it again because I can do better and you deserve better so is the version of this stage better and Unleashed or is it better here they already off to a better start damn it don't be ahead me King Henry the 13th is he the crazy one oh okay okay all right the Boost button is bad I need to stop using it so liberally I think that's my problem with these games I often default to the Boost button when I probably shouldn't a big finish Wombo Combo drifting that feels good when you actually hit it see this is what I'm talking about this is the run you guys deserve and kill him this time okay okay this is the real run I was just joking last time because my warm-up just launching these guys oops sorry not even paying attention to the beams that was an S I mean if the last one was a b that was definitely an S worthy performance see they make you wait for it they have to build the suspenser like did I get it did I get it of course I got it man I should have did a classic first because I feel like the modern run of Rooftop Run is unmatched oh wait I want that uh you coming back oh crap so like I said I haven't played Unleashed but isn't Unleashed supposed to take place in some like real world countries isn't that the oh what's in here invincibility don't mind if I do that doesn't stop you from getting crushed though that's why isn't this supposed to be Italy I could be wrong a simple search would save this this Barrel's gonna try and crush me stop rope barrels barrels he'll relax Donkey Kong I don't know what part of me thought I was gonna make that but there definitely was one you just wielding chainsaws speaking of wielding chainsaws have you guys watched chainsaw man yet what a great show I'm not done yet I still have like five episodes to go I'm up to the episode where they're stuck in the hotel room it's not a spoiler right I don't think so this probably is not an S rank performance but in my heart it's an S rank performance actually not gonna lie the uh the 2D run is is pretty fun yeah I'm sorry guys this isn't much of a rooftop run this is a rooftop jog did I do it no I did okay are we gonna set it to you're Colors is a trash game I don't care what you said you get five stale acts that are exactly the same some of the easiest boss fights in history it's a bland game not saying you're not allowed to like it of course you are you don't want to mess with me I'm spikier than usual this is Sonic when he uses just a little bit of gel you know like when he's going out he's going clubbing in casino night really you are you some kind of fake oh God is this gonna be as painful as the sonico 6 fight that was probably one of the worst boss fights ever all right gonna kick his ass though nope he was just chucking cars oh there just kind of okay stupid you should have thrown it at me [Music] you got it oh this fight is so cheesy the boss fights in this game are okay not crazy about silver for obvious reasons but Shadow's boss fight is literally just the final boss fight in Sonic Adventure 2. against Shadow then you have Perfect Chaos and then you have this okay ow I have no boost or rings did we stop being generous holy look at all this damage meteor smash meteor smash Sonic to keep running keep running keep running don't smush me don't smush me can I jump I'm afraid to jump ow I'm gonna get crushed oh God dude's got the giant Katamari okay done you know what's a great game that most of you probably haven't heard of and him throwing like the energy waves on the floor it reminds me of everhood it's basically like if undertale met Guitar Hero with Gino from Mario RPG is a main character it's really fun and it's on switch and it's on I think every platform and it's not super primordial form of this unique creation which I discovered had amazing abilities even I have never been able to master it could erase time and it could give me a more embarrassing name brilliant idea to use my Discovery to undo my previous defeats in order to perfect it I needed the help of somebody as smart as I am the only person that smart is me oh you are too kind my dear future self and I was happy to help I captured your friends fleeing them through time to bait my traps but the more your monster tears through time the more damage you do to the world the world I'm going he's like yeah but I just met my best friend so it's fine dude what is the lamp get that crazy honestly this cutscene is goated forever destroy them less arguing more destroying destroy me you and what mustache I beat you all the time by myself and now there's two of me then I'll have twice as much fun defeating you all right here we go Gotta Fight both eggs please oh Sonics get up Sonics watch out oh they died all right here we go final battle time two Sonics one boss do I have oh I see I have to launch the other Sonic get him get in there punch him in his time eggs oh and then he spits out more rings I got it wait I could just charge up the other Sonic okay all right I'm switching back I feel like I made more progress in uh in modern mode hit him boost right into it it's got to rupture his uh his egg Sac I'm a little overwhelmed by this fight I feel like I should have remembered it I had like a vague idea yeah I'm watching I could shoot lasers too this is my friend laser honestly Frontiers has done the best supersonic boss fights in a really long time [Music] I'm doing it with our powers combined we are well we're still technically both Sonic all right fly through the thing let's kill him still don't quite know what I did but got an A rank look at the two boys side by side iconic and oh yeah I I wouldn't eat that sir still warm time travel it's covered in space dust just like that all fun right but they had no idea and that's Sonic Generations I won't lie I definitely enjoyed Sonic Generations more than most 3D Sonic games in a long time so I can see why it is so loved like I said I haven't played it in about 11 years since uh since it came out so it was a treat to return to I'm just looking to fill that Sonic frontier's void right now so I guess the next game is Just Gonna
