[Music] meet 32 year old Shannon Chapman a single Essex girl trying to live like a millionaire on a 22 grand receptionist salary I love drinking champagne filling Ella can beam up the girls love laughing they love going out in just two years Shannon's taste for the high life has racked up a debt of 26,000 pounds well over her annual salary but it's not just champagne my mouth's worth about ten thousand poems as well as her teeth there's her tan about 70 pounds a month just for somebody like all girls I like to run a fake fan that's the least 130 pounds just on ten in a month then there's the shopping if I want something I just get it there's no well shouldn't he get out and walk out I never ever I just get it she's addicted to buying shoes and sometimes one pair just isn't enough if I go out and I see pair shoes that I really like I'm up I threw in some color then there's keeping up with the girls having daily lunches with wine Shannon's friends and family don't know the full extent of her huge debt she's a Houdon spender she's always got a different pair of shoes on so I think that she spends a lot but she doesn't brag about it I'm not quite sure how much she spends but she always looks like she's Shannon's got five credit cards all maxed out totaling a whopping eleven thousand pounds on top of that she's got a massive 15 grand loan and she's heading for financial meltdown what would it matter if I spend another hundred pounds I'm already in debt sighs I don't know why but I keep spending at 32 with a salary of only 22,000 and a rising debt of 26 grands Shannon needs serious health it's going to mean shock tactics that Jay huntin Benjamin fry have a game plan up their sleeves lifestyle expert Jay will show Shannon how to live the high life for less that three pounds a head this is a way that you can have friends around but yet not lose out on the money side while psychological coach Benjamin will push Shannon to the limit to understand her extreme spending just imagine yourself letting go [Music] living the champagne lifestyle is second nature to Essex girl Shannon Chapman a very sociable person and I just love going out getting dressed up going to nice bars and nice restaurants feel good I feel comfortable with like belonging that the environment and it doesn't help that she's living in a millionaire's world she and her high flying city boy brother lived with their lottery winning cousin in his flash Essex pad the fun around his turn well my brother and slow some money this is got beautiful massive house so there's a couple of millionaires in the family so I sort of trying to keep up with them I like the lifestyle used to it it's a case of keeping up with the very rich Joneses Shannon sister who made her millions in property and car sales is also a Shopaholic but she can afford to be it does have an effect that I like shopping on Shannon and she kind of thinks well I can buy this that unless it's cheap you know everybody else goes shopping type thing she doesn't seem to realize that the small spending adds up despite being surrounded by millionaires Shannon is not a freeloader she's often the most generous person in the room every penny in a purse has got to go and she don't spend it on herself she spent it on other people she's a very generous girl for six years Shannon and her boyfriend were living the party lifestyle running a nightclub in Cyprus two years ago they bought a house together in England but just weeks later their relationship ended and Shannon's spending began first stop Marbella with the girls where she blew 1,500 quid in just seven days and she hasn't stopped squandering since [Music] now 32 and single Shannon's stuck as a receptionist in the city earning just 22 grand nowhere near enough to support the lifestyle she's accustomed to I work for the basement bank in the city so everybody that works there they earn loads and I'm really close with a lot of people there so we come out a lot we go to a bar you know they might go straight up and champagne champagne and then you know it's my turn I'm not gonna buy wine or ice with them on a vodka I'm gonna drink what we're all drinking so I don't feel twice I'll just go ahead and buy it okay then his 7850 please Shannon's mountain of debt is built purely on luxuries of her monthly rent is a minimal 200 pounds her self-made family a determined Shannon learns the hard way it's her own fault she's got herself in such an amount of debt and on idea I can't be there to bail her out and I'm not going to it's time that she's sorted it out herself Shannon's at crunch point with no money and no one to fall back on her spending is spiraling out of control she's struggling to meet minimum debt repayments and credit has finally run out she has to be stopped now omote spending across this appointment because it's our third lift on one card all the rest of Max Dale is rarely any money left in my wages so I really need to do something about this now before I get myself in such a mess [Music] this is it after searching the length and breadth of Benjamin and Jay look around Shannon's home for clues to her spending while she waits at her local pub obviously not her house no this is her cousins patter he's obviously not short of a bob or two he turned into my bedroom and he can tell immediately there's like a teenage bedroom so can you fit in here no it's like every bit of space massive rare this stuff they'll stop me up in a second because I walk in and see the shows there it is it's another walk-in wardrobe with a bed loads of shoes still with labels on those are unused loads of them not even worn and she does that thing if she buys one pair and then buys three others in the same color oh yeah the indecisive shopper she's obviously just been shopping High Street oh look there are free bags of clothes which receipts in for it from the last week and a half so I look like I don't stop shopping you see that's interesting cuz this shop most thing averages about two three pounds but she's managed to cook up a hundred and twelve pounds with this stuff I mean look at all of those things the one thing that's personal in here is the shelf over there that's a quite cool face nicely photo lovely ladies do you think I heard party girls I think this is a party girl and that being at home and home life isn't really important that's what's really important to her partying with her ladies I think that she doesn't really live here kind of both in reality and in her mind she really focus on going out getting ready having a good time maybe she's looking for something in life that she hasn't found yet at home oh nice bathroom Lord quite a lot of expensive products and look at this that is about 200 pounds worth of tanning products this is somebody who takes a tan really very serious she's really focused on the superficial that to me is something that shows you know it's a really great deal with her but I'd worry with that there may be beauty is only skin-deep here yeah it's possible that underneath all that there something's really doesn't like about herself I'm gonna go and look in the kitchen come on then hey party fridge party fridge party garden day she really must live around a lot of wealth here that is real spender holux worst nightmare isn't it these are some of his bills but also thought she's going out a lot look rosary rock no the browser II lots to fitness first mmm he's in a bit of trouble oh look she's obviously been refused another loan mm-hmm I think we should take all of this with us but not before they find the millionaire's playground well okay her cousins obviously doing all right but she's not [Music] - force shannon to confront her excessive spending over the past two years benjamin and jay have arranged a little game hello Shannon I'm Jay nice to a year looking very nervous I promise you nothing horrid ladies and gentlemen it's time to play I live like a millionaire Shannon welcome to tonight's I live like a millionaire okay so the way we play the game is really simple we show you the amount of money that you spend on something and you have to guess whether you're true spend is higher or lower and you might find that the audience help out so first up you'll spend in the last two years on clothes and shoes and accessories what do you think of 6,000 pounds do you think you spent higher or lower than 6,000 pounds Shannon's proved she's no winner in the game of saving can she come up trumps on her spending her real figure is almost half Shannon's annual salary enough to buy this top of the range Caravan 10,000 23 pounds and 65 pence okay moving on to round two I want you to think about how much money you spend on going out in the last two years there's a figure eight thousand pounds I'm going out you're saying okay final challenge no the actual amount is but that Shannon could have been messing about on the water having bought this flashy speedboat 476 pounds 33 pens how do you feel about spending that much money on going out and the final round is fake tan and beauty this is where Shannon spending really racks up J starts the bidding at 10,000 pounds but what's the true figure I'd say that was pretty spot-on [Applause] the audience is saying hi and you're saying I know it's not less than that so I'll go higher [Music] enough for a deposit on this two bedroom luxury Essex flat eighteen thousand five hundred and thirty four pounds and ninety five pence Shannon that is way higher than ten pounds I just want you to say to me a very important catchphrase thank you I live like a millionaire thank you I live like a millionaire but when the applause dies Jay and Benjamin's reality check begins to hit home really shocked when they tell me how much I've been spending over the last couple of years it's never really fought back the big picture of just I know it's been roughly each time but I can't believe I'm not that much I've decided I've found today really easy and really fun I don't need to get down to the nitty-gritty careful what you wish for Shannon it's time for your wallet to have the week off [Music] Chanin what we're going to do now is work out how much money you're going to be able to survive on for the next seven days for your cold turkey budget to spend on non-essential items but before we do that Benjamin and I just wanted to know how you work out your money do you know how much you get through every week so it's not continuous it's not a regular thing so I just spend I don't even can't even guess we have actually worked out what you get through and the total is 268 pounds well that bet that's everything that's included into what it cost to eat your work travel and then and that's everything no that's all non-essential items that's your clothes your tanning magazine parties I can't believe it's almost like now only is it yeah no seriously really well what we've got to do now is work out the minimum amount of money that you could survive on for the next seven days fiver on lunch does it really cost five pounds every day to have lunch at minimum how about you make yourself a Marmite sandwich at home and wanting to take it to work okay let's make it easy cuz Benjamin and I reckoned that you can spend the next seven days on 40 quid now I know I can I could I know that but it's gonna be hard Shannon's worried that cold turkeys gonna play havoc with her social life I've got my new cold turkey budget today which actually isn't too scary anything on my diet is I'm out tomorrow and I'll probably blow it all tonight to be honest because I'm out with my friends and I just don't expect my friends to pay for name [Music] day one of cold turkey Shannon spent nothing of her 40 pounds so far but she's meeting friends for drinks while normally she'd be the first to get around in her friend Lisa buys her a belated bottle of birthday bubbly saving her a tidy 35 pounds brother Paul suggests she play on her charm and beauty to get by and Paul's tips seem to work three hours later she hasn't spent a penny and that shrewd little brothers got more bright ideas to stop her from blowing her budget nice by negotiating and allowing others to buy the drinks for once Shannon saved herself 95 pounds in one night I would be at least three hours the next morning feeling worse for wear shannon has to live up to her side of the bargain let the ironing commits to be honest I don't really mind iron in generally but today struggling a bit because I do feel really hungover just barely I just want to be laying on the sofa right now [Music] getting into the swing of budgeting Shannon cuts back on another regular extravagance lunch with the girls four times a week uh probably lunch out so fifty pounds probably saved just by making lunch that's 200 pound a month my god that's a lot of lunch when a homemade lunch costs a pound she'll say 45 quid in a week he looks really horrible doesn't it I wasn't so bad at all actually took two seconds my back it's halfway through cold turkey week and Shannon's meeting up with Benjamin he hopes to probe behind the party girl image and see what's driving her spending so the way you've had a bit of a fancy lifestyle since you were about twenty twenty-one earlier than that while I was going on then when I was 18 I went out with a millionaire that's now a billionaire hmm Shannon didn't marry the millionaire instead she had an eight-year relationship with Bradley for six years they run a night club together in Cyprus they came back to England and bought a house planning to settle down and have a family but Shannon got cold feet we're both din 95 and my life to see if I boring yeah and then he just and he seemed boring probably yeah so you've given up a lot of your time for him he gave up a lot of yourself for that relationship I could have made a career for myself in those six years that was a good time I went when I was 20 to come back when I was 28 for me they are the crucial years we're about 21 22 you decide what you want to do and that's when you get it so I've come back and I'm never going on reset yes I sort of feel like I'd miss out a little bit but I don't begrudge it from him cuz I had a lovely time it's great great experience loved it what happened with money in that relationship who paid for Bradley's pay for everything pretty much hey dude so you were a kept woman yeah so I want to grow a relationship I want to obviously live with the same lifestyle I was living mmm I've got pay for it myself now what you weren't used to you start behaving again a bit like a young and our teenager at the age of 28 enjoy it had a great time yeah so there's no real example in your family of anyone else being really in debt or money or difficult struggling yeah Shannon's father now lives in Spain he left the family home when she was three both parents remarried and she grew up with seven new and noisy siblings we're all brothers and sisters loved it busy crazy house what age did you move out was that 16 can wait to leave wait to care that house with all those people in it wasn't as great as you were saying you couldn't wait together it was but you know we need to say Nigel you just want you want to feel more grown-up don't you just want to be different your parents why not why don't I it's just not cool with it so how is your relationship with your father excellent I am a daddy's girl the go for the weekend and we'd go out and we'd do something can he'd make his checkup Hill was a mountains and exciting and fun and laughing all the time so we're never angry with him for leaving your mum and therefore leaving you no I don't think so why not he's never had ruin my dad so you focus on the excitement of being with him and that was what felt really good in life yeah Benjamin suspects there could be a link between Shannon's parents breakup and her own fear of commitment so maybe being in Cyprus was exciting with Bradley but being settled and ready to start a family wasn't exciting I think that Shannon not really used to thinking about her I'm also a little bit worried that there's more to the family story in the family dynamic than she's really letting on she paints a very positive picture of a very extended step and half family and yet she also has made it pretty clear that she was very keen to spend time with her father but he wasn't there as much as she would've wanted so what's happened to the feelings about that what's happened to the feelings about the end of her relationship two years ago what's happened to her [Music] feeling really really upset today and really frustrated with myself because I had a chat with Benjamin yesterday and I didn't say anything that I wanted to I kept things in and for once in my life someone was actually listening to me and I feel like I've missed an opportunity of mr. chance actually speak out and say you know get a few things off my chest feeling low and in need of a spot of retail therapy Shannon heads to her favorite shop she's on dangerous ground unable to resist temptation Shannon's about to fall back into her old spending trap and splurge her whole budget and more in one go smart is different I could've bought five skirts in there this one in particular I'd already seen it and I coexisted it's half price he's now gonna go cold turkey budget by only 9 pounds I don't feel it's nice be guilty at all shanon's budgeting logic is completely flawed later that night the guilt kicks in so blew it basically out it really well over the weekend today I bought skirt which was 49 pounds since then all the way home on the try not be feeling really bad really cannot just feel really guilty now just feel like I didn't need it I didn't I didn't need that skirt foot loads of skirts I just wanted it and that's why I've got to stop doing it's day six of cold turkey and as shannon's already blown her budget on a skirt she can't afford her usual ten pounds cart balloting so she rolls up her sleeves and mocks in this is the first time I've ever won give me tell ya [Music] it's the end of the week and Shannon's failed miserably at cold turkey now she has to face Jay do you think you're one of those people who when you're in the shop it's like it's too late yeah it does feel a bit like that if you hadn't have been on the cold turkey week how many more things would you have bought in there am I for the second scare right okay having fallen off the wagon Jays bringing Shannon to book now what I want you to do is to have this notebook in your bag and not buy anything for a week so you're out and you see something I want you to write down the item and I want you to give it marks out of 10 10 is I am finding it incredibly difficult to even contemplate leaving this shop without buying it and one is hmm I've noticed it is quite nice you know wouldn't mind that then in here we're going to write down your justification I need it for work I really want it whatever it is that's going on in your head I want you to write this down okay well that's fine no and then at the end of the week what I think is going to happen to you is things that you really really felt you needed at that time you can't even really remember what they are does that sound like something that's feasible to do I'm certainly keep it going all right Jay's hoping the book will help Shannon to seriously consider each urge to splurge and realize it's just a craving Jay's also set Shannon a new budget to help her pay off her debts now what we've done here is we've gone through everything and this is your current expenditure per month at the moment what we get to at the bottom is a total expenditure every month of two thousand two hundred and four pounds of nine P now you're bringing in 1538 pounds twenty nine P so every month and you are overspending by six hundred and sixty five pounds ATP that's almost unbelievable now on your recommended expenditure what we've added all of these up to become two is 1300 three seven pounds 82 J's worried Shannon only pays the interest on her credit cards in her new budget she's allowed a surplus to start paying off the actual debt as well now if we add 200 pounds to your minimum payments that is only gonna take you three and a half years to pay it back is that better than you thought yeah that's good news so we've cut clothes to a hundred pounds a month and tanning beauty of fitness to forty the other area is going out and this includes work lunches and we've cut that back to 125 pounds because you are living in that way way above your means I'll give it go definitely there will be times when you are going to want some more money then what I think we need to be thinking about with you is either looking for a different job or looking at doing a second job something where you can bring in some more income can certainly think about both those I'm hoping that the note book is really really gonna be a good tool for her because she really needs to learn how to say no to herself if she's going to stay on budget Benjamin worries that Shannon is unable to understand how her past may be affecting her present he calls a meeting with mom Carol to find out more about Shannon's childhood Shannon said that you and father separated when she was about three years old is that right what she couldn't really remember was what that was like I think for Shannon it was very upsetting she was a bit of a daddy's girl cuz I remember she started bedwetting a little bit after he left not for long I know though I don't think she ever come to me and said I want my dad or I really think like that I know she was withdrawn as a small child she was always a quiet child held everything he never let on her emotions very much in fact I don't still think she does that now particularly maybe difficult emotion hmm I can't read at all you know I never know what's going on it mind maybe she's keeping those feelings to herself I think she is most at the time this is my worry with Shannon is that she said you know in theory I want to get married to Bradley and have children but when it came down to it something else came into the rice some thought something frightened her and it could be the same thing that fryin during the night when she wet her bed when she was three because feelings that are not expressed stick around for a long long time I think that Carol shed some interesting light on Shannon's early experiences particularly when her father left and this really helps me to understand Shannon a bit better particularly she said that Shannon keeps things bottled up inside determined to get back on the straight and narrow Shannon decides to give Jay's impulse spending book ago and hits the shops I love them they're really plying them they like all my other shoes Bart look at the color [Music] they love latent the color then they make that we Brown they're only five pounds that's my style that's got my name written all over it let's find for your life and the book comes into use shoes marks at a time nine and three quarters justification if I had bought them it would have been because they would look great in my bow that's my justification but hey I'll talk about them I wonder how much this book I'm gonna fill up for once Shannon walks away empty-handed the book has done its job meanwhile halfway through the process Jay and Benjamin meet to discuss Shannon's progress I just feel a bit stuck and I'm not really sure we're getting anywhere to go well I just worry about the fact that what she does do regardless of anything else is take refuge in this social life it's a huge part of her life the going out the parties the big drinks bills the champagne all of that if she's crystal on her budget I have to really think of a way to harness her in and get her to realize that she can't keep spending like this and maybe find a different way of entertaining so that's going to be a challenge at the moment she doesn't really seem that interested in coming with me and thinking about things and I think maybe if I find a way to make it more visual for her maybe we can begin to get somewhere but the moment if we don't do anything soon I'm worried we're gonna run out of time well quite a lot still to do then [Music] when it comes to partying Shannon's weakness is her generosity Jay is going to show her how she can entertain at home for a fraction of the cost now Toro runs cookery classes and is an expert at canapes torille has a variety of affordable canapes to show shannon well my favorites it looks really really it's a great one you wanted to entertain people and press them is baby baked potatoes with sour cream and caviar we're gonna use lumpfish caviar now this you can buy from any supermarket but it's only about two pounds jointless and this will last from all the potatoes at all we've got some baby new potatoes and you're gonna drizzle them a little bit of olive oil salt everything pop them in the oven and when they're cooled down we're going to dress them with some sour cream uh-huh that's it so they're gonna go into the oven torille recommends 10 to 12 canapes per person for a 3-hour drinks party and they needn't cost the earth so next here we go make our the mini frittatas which is a little kind of little almost omelet perfect I like this one because it's quite colorful with the green of the courgette and the red of the pepper and obviously mushroom in love and it doesn't make a difference so when you eat it and something can look it's presentable and it looks really pretty already I think now I already have dinner parties at home but I end up going over the top what do you buy that makes it so expensive maybe I do like it smoked salmon and crab start with avocado something like that and then I can do steak and mushrooms it costs a lot of money so you've got to really look for seasonal fresh produce and the answer key and then also look for specials the next recipes mini cherry tomato pesto coolest tip you can buy the ready roll puff pastry but it's more than twice as expensive if I pack it like this it's really easy to roll it out the great thing is if you buy any only need a little bit just put it in the freezer take out and you know wasting it I don't use pesto quite a lot at home oh really actually if you buy it in the summer big bunch of basil you can may lose vampire in the freezer they mean is slightly less than that because either we need to make sure it's not over I'll take some that happen see I'm sodium rushes in everything I do I do too much nothing wrong with that in spirit just just about knowing when to stop stop exactly do it good at two so let's get it cuz still quite colorful pull up mini pizzas and that I didn't take long at all to prepare did it so really really quick really good Shannon [Music] so the whole point of this exercise was to show how you can make food really easily and cheaply if you want to have people at home it's an average of three pounds a head they would be willing pretty amazing can I try one of these those are many frittatas these are really good yeah like those all right this is a very stunning dish isn't it potatoes with the caviar I need to champagne we're gonna call them Shannon potatoes so if you had three or four friends round at three pounds a head it could be less than 20 quid so you could tell them to bring the drink and you'll do the food guess who's gonna be in pocket perfect sense charlie we're all coming around to yours for a pool party Shannon can you bring us a drink oh yeah after meeting with her mum Benjamin is concerned that Shannon has difficulty relating events from her childhood to events now he's hoping to show her how the pieces of her past may fit together to make her the person she is today I've hidden around this playground decent of a jigsaw puzzle so I'd like you to recover these missing pieces [Music] [Music] Benjamin feels her parents breakup could be linked to her own breakup with Bradley and that fun times with her dad mirror her party lifestyle now and finally that after her parents breakup growing up in a big new and raucous family of seven step and half siblings could be linked with Shannon's inability to talk about problems now so what do you see at the top broken home mm-hmm someone shouting and someone very sad in the back what do you think that might refer to for thinking about the past probably with my mum's I broke up okay and what does the arrow point to Oh is that turning my back on a house don't want one that's something that did happen recently isn't it obvious your parents marriage broke down and your ideas about marriage and having a family kind of broke down before they really took off for so many years like six years that's what I wanted until it was right there okay that's the bit that's interesting let's ever think about the middle one I'm having fun because this big smile face it that looks like an arrow on the left okay which has led on to my party fun life who do you think that adult is dad yeah so there was a sense in which your childhood time with your dad was kind of an escape and maybe looking back it's easier to think of the fun you had with your dad rather than the fact that he wasn't there and now as an adult you look at the fun you can have rather than what might be more difficult Benjamin suspects that Shannon suppresses her unhappiness and copes by having fun okay what do you think of the last one huge fans huge famine its crowd senior family isn't it yeah and the one on the right saying nothing not talking Benjamin also thinks that perhaps with seven new siblings Shannon got lost in the crowd if there are only two people in the family do you think it'd be easier for one person to find their voice I don't know because I only know what I grew up with I don't know but do you feel that you're really open and you can really talk about anything I am going to suggest to you that it'd be a good idea to experiment with talking more openly and seeing if after a few hours or even a few days you don't perhaps feel a tiny bit freer what do you think good scared okay good that's good at least you can say you feel scared it's the first time I've heard you say anything like that okay yeah I'm a bit scared okay think about that private alright I think this is really important to talk about though why you don't want to be seen to be upset when this is the key to that is why there's a blank space in that speech bubble that's what the last piece of the puzzle lots of people around you and you have to keep quiet Benjamin strikes whilst the iron's hot at long last Shannon finally lets go and begins to talk sound so what you're saying is there's things you do want to talk about and you would like help with that you you get stuck at the point of talking about them I can't even think of anything in particular you know that that I just can't wait to say it's just I suppose it's actually talked us both I think hovering on the edge it's probably the most uncomfortable place of all and I suppose I wonder if the spending is in a way a kind of the latest of a long line of behaviors that have helped you to avoid dealing with these difficult emotions is there anything else that you think in the past you've used and in the place where you might now use spending to control your feelings to help you cope well food shannon drops a bombshell she's kept an eating disorder secret since her teens and is still wrestling with the illness I don't see the food or apart from the Lumet so you overeat because that feels good at the time then you need to purge because you're worried about what it's doing to you physically and then do you feel guilty afterwards all good every single time I say that it's the last time enough rage is a fault I want to get help always stop it I don't want to keep doing it when you have that feeling I must buy this thing when you have that feeling I must now go and eat do they feel at all similar yes go get more let's make him feel good never joining it why it's happening but then after I spent what do you feel guilty not I've eaten I feel guilty I think the part of that that we really have to pay attention to is where you say if I buy what I want to eat what I want I feel really good I think what you really mean is I stop feeling bad you've got a choice between worrying yourself and other people with your problems or spending over it or eating over it as an adult your responsibility is to start to think what do I want to do about this do I want to find my voice recover myself and start to talk through my negative issues or do I just want to carry on spending or just carry on eating whose help do you really want and my mum's you wanted to get to know you properly and to be there for you and listen to you well that's going to involve having conversations like this but with her could you do that laughter now [Music] my family would listen to me if I started talking but cuz I find it hard to talk they don't know if there's anything wrong because I act like there's not never anything wrong with me I've never told anyone about the bulimia so you felt good enough you know I'm glad I shared it but now obviously everyone will know and I'll be able to share that so hopefully I've aired and shared a lot of my deepest darkest secret and it'll be for about what is almost more significant from today rather than what she said it's how terribly terribly difficult she found it to begin to speak once you got going she was alright but for her that threshold I'm keeping quiet opening up is very very strictly guarded I do think that's definitely something I'm gonna have to work on with her in the future having finally opened up to Benjamin Shannon's had a breakthrough the chat with Benjamin yesterday really made me think and it just made me just made me realize that there are deeper things going on in my life and I think I do spend to compensate credit cards are my worst enemy so I'm gonna chop their heads off I've got a holiday on Wednesday to my buyer and if I've got them with me I might spend on them so I'm just gonna cut them up this is the last one so it's the last time I'll be able to get any credit and two late relief Jay thinks Shannon needs some inspiration for new work avenues and that she might be happier in a more rewarding career that utilizes her skills for organizing and entertaining lifestyle management is a multi-million pound growth industry that helps busy professionals by organizing their personal time Jay is introducing Shannon to Clare Brinson who's been running her own lifestyle management company for five years will you explain to Shannon what your job involves lifestyle management is essentially giving back a critical part of life that people are struggling with and that's time so this is like having a private PA for your personal life so you've got a whole load of clients and what sort of jobs do you do we will be buying and selling houses renovating houses for our clients will be errand running taking their dry cleaning back for them returning videos collecting things they've forgotten in places returning items to shops all that general day-to-day things that you know we just find we don't have time for it I'd really love to do that that's what that is what I would get me excited maybe you should come and try it out for a day or two maybe we should actually see whether this is something you'd enjoy doing I'd love to I'm really worried I'm quite organized I'm in fact very organized hopefully that was showing through and she'll say that she needs me and there's no time like the present to get started so what we're gonna be doing today one of my clients came to me last night with a list of tasks that he wants me to do and I was hoping that you might be able to help that he has a date on Saturday night and he really wants to make an impression on her he would like some flowers to be delivered to her before they go out and he would also like a little gift to give to her it's up to you to decide what to give her it hasn't given me any details on her simply that she's a typical woman he also needs to get his jacket dry-cleaned and his shoes polished finally he would like to make her breakfast in the morning so if you could do a little supermarket shop for that good luck a lifestyle manager can typically earn 40 pounds an hour compared with the 8 pounds 75 Shannon earns in her present job see you then thank you yeah I'll take that thank you if I did something like this job that would compensate for me I still be buying things oh we're buying from no I'm spending my own money but still be getting my fix I'm getting the same like excitement out of it I'm spending someone else's money thank you thank you with breakfast for two in the bag Shannon's doing blooming marvelously thank you thanks very much clear well done well done you've done a really good job it definitely puts in a very good word for years just that Shannon's first big challenge in her new life without plastic is a mini-break tamar bayer her last trip with the girls set her back 1,500 quid in spending money and this time she's the only one on a budget how will the new thrifty Shannon keep up in Spain's answer to San Tropez Irma Holiday and all ready to die I didn't use a sunbed my friend joke did and I didn't I laid on the sand so I saved myself 14 euros she's gonna buy them just one month ago Shannon's finances were spiraling out of control she was 26,000 pounds in debt and frittering away 275 pounds a week on going out and looking good Jay's shown her how to entertain on the cheap really and introduced her to a potentially rewarding new career in lifestyle management I really love to do that that is what would get me excited Benjamin's shown Shanon the links between her past and present if there are only two people in the family do you think it'd be easier for one person to find their voice and helped her talk for the first time I don't think the third effort of our family Benjamin's worried it'll still be hard for Shannan to talk openly with others once he's gone he wants to leave her with something that reminds her to simply take the plunge can I tell you something I wanted to do this in my life okay but we're in it together Shannon but then what when you go then I'll go well yeah when we go you will always remember how you could take that step and do something that seemed really scary and it'll work out and you'd survive it and you felt better at the end of it that's what this is all about it's all about you getting to that point where you want to open your mouth with your mom or someone and you freeze and you remember that if you can go out of an airplane you can open your mouth and speak yeah all right let's do it [Music] [Music] [Music] go with 13,000 feet between Shannon and the safety of solid ground she's experiencing sheer terror it's the same feeling Benjamin hopes she can overcome to enable her to begin voicing her feelings with family and friends [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] that was just mental I tell you about that for a second I need to take my mind when I stood up and I was leaning over I thought I can't do this I can't I can't that's why that's the moment that I think you get to when you want to talk about this real stuff and that's the moment I want you to remember you were there you didn't say no you didn't back out you took the plunge now anything that's exactly right insert the leap of faith and you did it a knife is so much better if when I get to my mom's and I want to talk to her and tell her everything if I feel like I'm on the edge like I was up there I'll just remember that it wasn't so bad after all when I got to the bottom so that was perfect what better to thought of today it's brilliant I think it's helped so the next step is actually doing it I can do it now Shannon started the process of communicating there's no going back and she be open with her family for the first time in her life [Music] yeah what's happened I've just like got myself in a mess and I didn't I had to get out of it and obviously I'm not very good at talking or speaking I didn't want to tell anyone don't want to worry anyone as usual and so I've just like thought I could deal with it and all of a sudden I can't deal with it and I'm getting a bit panicking so I have had bulimia for 17 years I didn't know that did you guys know I didn't he was joking it's punishing myself it's like family or later just like didn't she was 15 non-stop oh my god I can't even see the logic and believe me up myself but it's there and it's an illness and I can't seem to get rid of it and I really really want to and I thought maybe if I could understand him where things are coming from I mean to be honest I already feel better and I've been really good lately and now spending is my new thing so now I'm spending like a wild woman it's all coming out hopefully now ready of it I just something it's stupid I just need to learn to talk oh no that's what you've got to do you know we're always here for you I do feel like now I could tell anyone anything really already feel better and obviously I want to get out this mess and I want themselves oh [ __ ] oh yeah this process is comedy but Easy's just just to speak to a mum [Music] one month ago Shannon was 26 thousand pounds in debt now she's making inroads into paying it off she's also seeking help for her bulimia with the support of her family Shannon meets Benjamin and Jay for the final time and they're impressed with how far she's come we've reached the end how are you I went to see my mom so glad I've told her about her amazing skepticism about the fact that you could speak and things would get better tell her anything now I don't know why I felt like I couldn't speak so that before well maybe that's what you learned as a child and now you've relearned it as an adult that's a different message though I haven't seen you since he went on holiday how did that go well first of all tell you the last of my way in which was when my dad started the first time two years ago when it spent 1,500 pounds in seven days this time I spent 300 pounds what five drinks so now you're home and you're getting on with things are there temptations it's over that this spending definitely you know there's one thing something yeah there's needing something yeah and every time I go shopping I look at things I want I don't need any of them having had that experience of jumping out of an aeroplane how has that changed how you felt about yourself how do you think that might have changed your behavior when you mentioned bulimia and you said bulimia and spending is just another way I'm punishing myself I've realized that and that's that's Klockner so obviously when I'm having the moments from bulimia or when I'm spending I just remember that it's I don't need to punish myself anymore have you done anything since doing the work experience with Claire I have written a letter and I just said that I'll be anxious to speak to her you know if I could work for Claire's company or some kind of lifestyle management then just by doing the extra hours I can maybe clear up the day's secrets were you earlier a long time but it's not so a way in at all it's quite a surprise when you tell me both of us feel that you have really benefited from this because you've been really open and honest and I don't think this is ever ever gonna happen again no way and also remember when he said that people like me who spend outrageously when they do come to save face savers could say what I feel now for the thing I'm like you know well I look at you and I see someone completely unburdened yeah why you lost something heavy that was just hanging around in my family my mom especially there's been the massive weight off my shoulders if I remember back to how I was feeling before this process started and I felt scared alone frightened I was worried it wasn't sleeping properly and all those things because I'm not feeling them now I feel so much happier I would go as far as saying this is actually been life-changing for me I don't even want to spend anymore it's over a you were struggling spend a holic could you do with the Jay in Benjamin treatment to help get you back in the black email spend a holux at BBC code at UK for information on how to apply for the next series
