[Music] new animation style is making backstory exposition more interesting and this magic black sand is what the wakandans actually used more importantly this is in Joe boo telling Eric his own history tell me a story it's one the story of home which is a nice touch to actually open with our villain instead of our hero he's to Grace Jones looking chase so you trying to say they look like slaves to the rhythm or just that you've seen that face before look if these Grace Jones references go over your head you didn't know what James was talking about anyway this stark color contrast between the wakandan Americans in their blue shades and the door of a lodge a in their red making it clear they're from another world zooty samba do Erykah Badu you guys are just killing these pop references [Music] I don't think I've ever won the marble logo theme music before but for some reason it's sticking out to me today it's really good and wouldn't you know Michael chiquinho wrote it surprise surprise interactive nano buff 3d printed display santech that's a win this is now probably my second favorite theme in all DMC you only second to the actual Avengers theme dogs will bark at cats and Panthers will stalk from trees I'll be honest this scene was a little extra dark in my theater and I was a little annoyed but I like the aesthetic of black panther hidden by darkness and only being illuminated by muzzle flashes also Nakia is a badass good girl shown to the rescue my prince yeah I've never been to Africa and I feel installed her with the Sun beaming in it quite literally warms my soul the blending of modern design with some more rustic grass thatched roofs is beautiful and gives a distinctive feeling to this country it's like a metaphor for wakanda's embrace of Technology while still holding on to the traditions of the past something wags doesn't mean that it cannot be improved speaking of metaphors if that's not what this movie is about isolationism has worked for them doesn't mean there isn't a better way location cards are usually a pretty simple thing not to screw up so when filmmakers do something unique and take a chance in making them look cool we notice the font choice and unscrambling of the Afro futuristic language created from a blend of an existing Nigerian language and other hieroglyphs totally works you got it just doesn't tell anyone a lot Merce so let's talk about Ludwig göransson the Swedish composer responsible for this score he's worked on both wine coolers other films Creed in Fruitvale station he's written rap albums and like I mentioned with his book on de theme which I know it's not attributed as such I see it really is two challahs Black Panther theme as well kill mongers theme however is the first real blend of African music with more American hip-hop and it's another thing that gives this world uniqueness his use of talking drums Oh killer soundtrack how about Klaus claw moves exactly like a real hand but looks fake scrap some attention to detail with the water still being vibrated by the ships engines above even without Black Panther powers chadwick boseman x' workout routine in like two minutes we pan through each tribe and their amazing outfits that each have pieces that are specific to different real tribes in Africa the care and attention that went into a quick shot like this is astounding is that which is the challenge for the throne between black museum girl and 15 million merits guy 2 of our Brits at least one of you has to have that challenge the status quo spirit right there's a beautiful beard win I don't know too much about guerrillas or fan Thurs for that matter but I feel like this is a solid representation of how their fight would go a gorilla is going to overpower Panther for sure but the panthers more agile and quicker and I imagine the Panther would let an ape tire itself out like this see what I mean that's the Jawas theme gets me pumped up every time real merci beaucoup just stabbed him and now Churchill is risking his life on the edge of the waterfall I don't know what the rules are but those Spears are getting really close all because he knows how important him Baku's leadership is to his people also you're gonna want to have that chest wound checked out just not by an evil witch pretending to be a healer that white tunic - ciao reborn looking all clean and sharp the ancestral plane is gorgeous but the question is do you think you'd recognize your father in Panther form some crazy juxtaposition to Eric's upbringing alone knowing little of his heritage and the kids in Wakanda who seemed to be exposed to and integral to a lot of the ceremonies and rituals of Wakanda just his surprise actually makes sense if you remember in civil war - chawla basically said he didn't believe in any the mystical stuff in my culture it's not the end it's more of a stepping off point so - trailer also looks amazing in black also there's something fun and also intimidating about the most powerful man in the country politically and physically being followed around by badass female warrior bodyguards they bring their problems with them and then look on as like Abdul is in place even as a Koi a stands there showing off some super slick vibranium tech you'll notice the throne room is another conglomeration of modern architecture while the actual throne and council seats are on top of a more traditional stone structure take me with you we'll take him down together side by side come on Chris you just want to get out one of the best relationships and the story is between these two no cliches just a loving brother sister friendship really automated like the old American movie Baba used to watch wait back to the future well referenced so who stole this tech from whom or are Tony and Cherie just friends behind the scenes now get it that sounds like Tony settle to choppa super subtle past willing this will go quickly and I can get this my head yeah you do look better in dreads and with a katana I won't pretend like I've ever been kendrick lamar's biggest fan but the weekend this collab this blending of styles and sounds yeah bring them over here and hold on for safekeeping just for the record the famous watcher informant is credited as thirsty gambler so just hold on to that one yeah the claw is like an evil clown sometimes Andy Serkis always pulls your attention bad ass good girl she got to take off that wig and use it as a weapon win-win nikki is also again a badass good girl also using high heels as a weapon something I assume she doesn't typically wear okay this is that long take I brought it for my 60 second review I think I literally leaned forward in my seat in theaters the crazy aggressive chanting track in the background Okoye again kicking everybody's butt in the fluid fighting and choreography all ties together in a symphony of epic is crazy and Andy Serkis was the man for the role whether he's just indiscriminately opening fire and Ross or cracking himself up about blowing up a casino or not being satisfied with the level of excitement in a car chase in my opinion this car chase isn't lacking an excitement at all good call and uncivilized I guess South Korea was the right choice to blend into the neon pink and purple aesthetic of this movie since the gwanggaeto on can dangle Wonka did that it's that's not even close the bridge actually looks like this [Music] also I'll admit that the trailer track was a tad cooler ingenuity also door surfing I mean you could say he moves like a cat also more yep I know as a phase 2 thing but can we still count this is keeping the arm suffering motif going even if it's a repeat customer good-for-you Kugler saving your friends love interest hey that's deep Rogers move cap wasn't broken maybe a little emotionally 400 you mean Bucky to be fair claw had every right to believe he wouldn't do that even in death claw can't help but laugh so I was a little confused on first viewing about how kill monger found Wakanda since it's hidden but the book that in Jobu leaves his son seems to have all the information he'd ever need we had to maintain the lie this transition from the crazy review of who kill monger really is what to chaka really did the lie that Surrey had to keep and now in Jude daka's returning home bathed in the sunrise with this 10 score signaling a change coming while it he seen also I can't believe they killed off claw in this film but it was a smart play to allow kill monger to be the real villain this way we weren't wondering if claw will show up later I'll live my entire life wait this more you know in fan for stick miles tellers character was written a little more nuanced than Michael B Jordans but I've loved Mike since Friday Night Lights and Parenthood the man is quickly becoming an institution Michael B Jordan is always a win I totally buy that he gave himself every one of those scars as a reminder of his ultimate goal I believe and empathize with every word out of his mouth and all this death just so awful kill you also Michael B Jordans workout routine and this waterfall duel is way more intense than the one against mbaku at no point do they seem unevenly matched just unevenly motivated and that's why the trolley loses you know me I hate to see the good guys get knocked down but not only do we all see it coming it's the only outcome that makes any sense the charla doesn't do anything wrong at all but number one he just found out that his father was less honorable than he remembered him to he's now fighting for his life against someone who wants to kill him because of his father's dishonorable actions and three Erica's his cousin in T'Challa feels a deep sympathy and guilt over the life he's lived he wouldn't take into Jacquizz life during this fight no matter what and kill monger is dear to kill I am the cause of your father's day not even did he compete I think you both uncle James self-sacrifice and quite a bit of brutality if you've read enough Black Panther you knew this was coming doesn't make it any less surprising to see our hero get thrown off waterfall makes perfect sense at the ancestral plane for injured akka as his first home his apartment with his father but the sky still carries those beautiful colors in the background and oh my man another sting reminding us that enjoyable wasn't buried with his people and never joined the in central plain as a panther but as instead stuck in Auckland an almost literal visualization of the void with how indeed akka is cut off from his true heritage but I fear you still may not be welcome why well you see I was adopted by these nice white people you know them walk to remember girl and Rory's once you love so poignant that it cuts back to adult Eric for the raw emotion to come through something he probably couldn't even really process as a kid the Human Torch would want to burn it all wouldn't he more importantly a little foreshadowing that there are still two Black Panthers oh that's you know sometimes the most obvious thing like turning the throne in its head as kill monger approaches it to signal a new era can be the best and simplest visual storytelling best shot in the film and soon it will be the conquerors OD : I'd rather be de forma it's not that hard to believe that what cobby would get on board with the plan so quick besides the fact that such ala failed to kill claw and kill monger did he brings up this very idea to trial in the beginning of the film now if you said you wanted me and my men to go out there and clean up the word then I'd be all for it really seems like he just wants to get out I lied even the technology is the devil let's go back to the old ways Jabari have LEDs in their architecture reading the room for the second time obviously the Sun plays an important part in this film the wakandan sunsets being one of the few things in Judea remembers from his father two challahs first trip to the ancestral plane seems to be around dusk as to chacas rain comes to an end then the Sun is setting during two challahs defeat by kill monger and finally the Sun is rising as T'Challa finally becomes who he's supposed to be and challenges the way things have always been done T'Challa is alive what you're gonna need only help being again are you dawn Winston Duke gets most diverse performance award totally embracing the brash traditionalist during his first appearance and now being our comic relief one more word and I will feed you to my children I'm kidding we have vegetarians I owed you a great debt life for life and mbaku gets most selfless and altruistic award as well he had the chance to be the Black Panther but chose to do the honorable thing and save T'Challa see that's why the whole mercy thing is good [Music] now you've got kill mongers team battling Black Panthers team you are not fit to be a king coolest standoff ever and kill mongers suit could be a reference to black leopard the comic name changed for a few issues in the late 60s or pray kill mongers pet leopard by the way a suit is sick and it fits his personality perfectly yes sir I mean really will cobby get out I totally lied guys I'm I'm pretty sure she's fine there was no blood I think he just startled her a bit okay the armored rhinos are whatever but black panther taking one down by hand comics coming to life hey at least this time it wasn't someone letting personal matters get in the way of taking down the big bad when they had him pinned after an expertly executed plans I got him what do I do even Bilbo gets to do important stuff the subtitle seemed nice but it sure sounds a lot like he says scratch listen again look at the score cuts out all you can hear the blows they're each landing Baku to the rescue again Sheree is all about that sonic absortion tech also how funny is it that the teenage girl is giving the CIA man orders and teaching him how to take care of business true love from from the Rhino would you kill me my love for what kind without question it was at this point that my wife and I agreed that we wouldn't kill each other for any country killed with the very spirit he disrespectfully broke before the ritual combat Oh sad compliments it was the most beautiful thing you ever seen he promised one day so while kill monger has the literal spear in his chest we're the ones who feel like we're getting stabbed through the heart his methods were bad his anger and destructive nature couldn't be allowed to stand he even almost succeeded in killing T'Challa but that doesn't mean he wasn't justified or that he's not a product of some terrible circumstances and it definitely doesn't mean that he's not deserving of our compassion just burn me in the ocean well my assess is that jump from the ships because they knew death was better than bondage and as tragic as ended Jacquizz story is he did finally get to seal wakandans sunset and die believing he had done everything he thought was right and as much as he loses death generally isn't considered a win in a way his goal was realized it's just not executed the way he wanted to Chavez forever changed and starts making changes immediately also immediately mourns the loss of his cousin injured Dhaka instead of reveling and kill mongers defeat hey mbaku and Nike are in their where they belong love and Nakia better not be another Jane Foster calling you out Lupita you better not bail why the truth is Diane black panther oh no oh no okay loving some retelling of events and the movie from different angles all in wakandan blacks aunt - what is this technology as if we were one singer if we could just could we all just embrace that like how does a movie that basically ends with the message we're all one tribe seems to divide us further in case you don't stick around for the conclusion cling to that message on your own and all its sappy cliche glory it's the only way we can fix that divide what can a nation of farmers have to offer the rest of the world mostly just our insanely awesome fashion sense moral of the story is - Chawla doesn't answer questions if he has a chance for a dramatic fade-out how are you feeling good so I guess sure he figured out how to help Bucky control his mind works for me something I've seen come up a lot even in my own comment section is confusion over all the hype and that black panther is a mediocre movie I'm not saying these people definitely missed the point but it's it's a possibility I think most people would agree that Black Panther isn't necessarily some narrative masterpiece in order to break ground and effects or twists or blow all the comic-book movies out of the water what it did is have a majority black cast and crew an all black female Praetorian Guard in a complex black villain with a point while making all the money that's important that's why this movie is important throw all the awards you can find at moonlight doesn't mean any studio is going to jump at 65 million to make another one Black Panther made 1.3 billion dollars with a capital B that's 20 times as much money I'm not saying black panther fixed racism but ryan coogler proved that no one cares what color the people on screen are if you make a movie they want to see that's a good thing for the next director that pitches similar ideas with similar cast and crew lists that's all it's it's still a comic book movie a really well-crafted comic book movie nonetheless there is another thing that irks me I'll start by reiterating that representation is supremely important and I understand why people with the same skin tone as the people on screen would be happy that they're being represented black kids having a superhero that looks like them is awesome it's a really good thing and I hope we see more of it whatever part black panther played in making films created by and starring only people of color and extremely marketable thing it's fantastic my issue or maybe confusion is a better word is from the people who don't share that particular shade of skin color who keeps saying things like I know I can't relate to the culture or heritage but I still like the movie like some kind of nervous disclaimer do white people really relate to the genius billionaire who flies around the globe in an indestructible suit to the god of thunder from another planet with a magic hammer because they both have pinkish skin come on I relate to the guy living inside a force field with unlimited wealth claws and his tribal backstory exactly the same way I do to the red guy with a magic stone in his forehead he used to be thermostat AI my point is that I can't 100% relate to a movie about a guy from Texas who wears 10 gallon hats because I've never lived there /ban cool enough to pull that off his skin could again be chartreuse it wouldn't make it any more or less relatable to me my ancestors are french-canadian but documentaries about Lumberjacks are logs down rivers are still foreign to me that's all I'll finish by saying please don't misunderstand I by no means I'm trying to define your personal experience through my narrow lens if black panther was more relatable to you than any other MCU movie slash character that's awesome and I hope you we get more of it all that said there is an important message that may get missed since kill monger doesn't spell it out it's the reality that African Americans lost their history when their ancestors were forcibly taken from their homeland it's in that way that Eric finds his racial identity more important than two challahs national identity and it doesn't really matter what your opinion on african-american status is in 21st century America the fact that their connection to their African heritage was erased by the slave trade is an indisputable irredeemable heartbreaking fact it's no coincidence that Eric was born in Oakland the home of the Black Panther Party all right so finish off those comments about how I'm racist or beta or whatever and let's get back to the movie I imagine one of the biggest problems you could find wakandan culture would be sticking to an absolutist mana Craddock governmental system with a fun might is right meritocratic twists decided by combat my wife pointed out that none of the four inner tribes challenge to Chawla so maybe that's the trend it's more just the tradition of the thing and no one except the occasional Jabari challenges the throne obviously there are quite a few different ways to interpret this bill basically I see that there are two opposing views between two chaka and kill monger to Chaka and all preceding Kings represent isolationism or the belief that other countries problems are just that their problems let the refugees mean they bring their problems we do T'Challa starts there with little understanding of why or what that really means in the beginning kill monger is more of an internationalist but his ultimate goal is something like revenge or very best cased forced reparations through violence and basically do to them what they did to us for centuries and you can't really blame him for his outlook he grew up poor and alone in Oakland finding out that his fairytale home across the ocean had been hiding a fix-it but then there is Nakia who is the voice of reason and pretty much where to chalo lands after going through his conflict with kill monger let's empower the disenfranchised around the globe but not just by throwing weapons at them and ultimately that's what this story is about Wakanda opening up its superiority to the rest of the world kill monger ends up being the catalyst through which jacala realizes his father was wrong about keeping their superiority to themselves in Judea tragic stories the story of the rest of the world that T'Challa had let himself be blinded to and let's talk about engine dhaka eric stevens kill monger he's up there with the most well thought out well executed in well portrayed villains in the whole of the MCU if there's anything that really sets this film apart it's him he's the stand-in for all disenfranchised african-americans who are cut off from their history as Ross says and that's ironically where kill mongers world domination plan comes from the means by which he plans to achieve his end goal being a product of the country that made him Michael B Jordan rides the line between making you think I mean he has a point you guys watched people be chained and shipped off and you did nothing to stop it to protect your way of life but also spreading weapons around so Wakanda can rule the world and kill all the white people is a little evil also full transparency he seems to hate women or at least not believe they're deserving of respect hey auntie funny but she's the queen mother also choking women isn't cool though not everyone agrees with that and thinks kill monger is just a little Malcolm X while T'Challa is a little MLK burning the heart-shaped herb causes a bit of a disconnect there though he's not concerned with the future and for the record I'm not just saying kill monger sympathetic because he's black I once called the guy who tortures children and murders his coworkers the secret hero of the story and he was like paper white Erik is a tragic broken man trying to do what he thinks is best for the people that look like him in defeat he's gracious and it almost seems like he realizes what his crusade cost him is the idea of dying in a mind settles on him dying without experiencing the one thing his father said was wonderful Kaunas gifts to the world ironically sort of losing sight of the trees for the forest he had the big picture stuff but was barely able to experience the majesty of Wakanda similarly with cocoa in its Mexican culture I only have some basic understandings of African history honestly I've learned a lot through this process I hope I've done it justice so far everything I've read says that all the clothing is pretty accurate and inspired by different regions making Wakanda representation of the entire African continent Ruth Carter the costume designer went to great lengths to get everything right from the South African married woman's hat that was 3d printed to be perfectly shaped to the intricate costuming of the door milosh a and their armor that's meant to look like jewelry and han Cana does have some beautiful sunsets and that false sense of nostalgia to possibly has something to do with the Lion King but either way I covet it most of the VFX and CGI are spot-on with only a few nitpicky exceptions black panther is a beautiful well crafted engaging story that's a step up from a lot of the MCU that's come before and even though it's not as simple as one powerful UN speech a message of unity over division is one I hope we all leave the film with next week a relevant movie that you're all going to guess in five seconds with or without this pixelation though that is quite the entourage you got a mixtape coming out oh yeah yeah actually there is one yeah I'll send you to SoundCloud link if you lock high-five can you get the link to please I thought made me listen to your music [Music] you
