Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
You can use entirely hirelings or you can stealth scum.
The biggest problem I foresee is that XP doesn’t scale up with a lesser party. So basically you don’t gain any offsetting bonus for the difficulty (this was a major draw in solo BG1/BG2 solo runs)
The only thing that is worse than that is theoretically you actually lose out on XP since inspiration events give Xp sometimes.
In short you might even be handicapping your XP gain.
Combats are going to be extremely skewed, since a lot of encounters are designed for a group of 4.
Game isn’t designed for it, there’s so much more to get out of having a party. Not sure why you’d try.
You absolutely can; there are already a few playthroughs that are totally through or through most of the game playing solo the entire time. Personally just finished a tactician run with a solo eldritch knight fighter. Sharpshooter + hand crossbows with longstrider to kite deals so much damage you can plow through most of the game. The best thing though was definitely the Illithid Cull the Weak ability; turned so many later enemies into one-shots that wouldn't normally be.
There are a few places that are exceptionally difficult to do, like protecting Halsin's portal and rescuing the prisoners and Duke from the Iron Throne but knowing the fights is sometimes all you need.
I'm playing a solo run, tactician difficulty as a gloomstalker/assassin. I'm level 7 and I had to reload a save from bef ore against the act 2 boss, wasn't able to take it down due to the mechanic. Ill try again at level 8, but Im considering respeccing just for that fight.
