bit of a glitch on the audio at the four o'clock mass yesterday so the live streaming was not all that live they just got a vision so we're live streaming this mass so if you've ever dreamed about being on youtube today as we gather at the lord's banquet we begin by asking for god's forgiveness and mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ lord have mercy lord may almighty god have mercy on us and forgive us our sins and bring us to an everlasting life [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father gloria gloria glory to god in the highest lord jesus christ only be god son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us have mercy on us [Music] for you alone are the holy one you are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father of god the father glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] oh man [Music] let us pray oh lord grant that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion as we ask this through christ our lord amen a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in the tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord thanks be to god so lord it is good to give you thanks lord it is good to give thanks to you it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and give faithfulness throughout the night the just one shall flourish like the palm tree like a cedar of lebanon shall he grow they that are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish like the ports of our god they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and sturdy shall they be declaring how just is the lord my rock in her marriage to give thanks to you um a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable closed itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord thanks be to god hallelujah [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly and remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord most of us are planners we like to know what's going to happen this afternoon and monday morning and throughout the week so it's not unthinkable that people would walk out after mass and be talking to one another and say how about if we get together on wednesday this coming wednesday yeah i don't i think that's good i don't i don't have anything for wednesday you do it's ash wednesday oh and i think all of us realize that ash wednesday in the universal church is the beginning of our journey through lent to the suffering of jesus and his resurrection it's an incredibly important time and i would think that most people would say well thanks for the reminder and then on the way home say to themselves oh this is good now that i know because my husband i have a whole list of the things that he can do for lent or my children i can't wait to remind them of all these things they should be doing for lent it's amazing that we have such insight about what other people should do to correct their lives and it's to us at that moment that the gospel is directed how can we see the splinter in the eyes of others jesus says and miss the beam that is in our own eyes how good we are at seeing other people's faults but somehow ours are obscured to us lent is for all of us not just for someone else and i would imagine that when we're honest with ourselves we would say there are things that aren't right in my life and maybe this lent i need to change that but if you can't think of anything i have a suggestion i was visiting someone who wanted a priest to visit bring communion and so i went to the home and there are two elderly ladies who are sisters and they're living together and i was there for them and the one lady said well father i'm so glad you came but you know i probably should go to confession but i really don't have anything to tell you know i never leave this house and her sister said father she has a phone and she uses it well inferring that we sin by our speech and isn't that true for some reason in this point in civilization at this time in our lives as a community are open totally open for us to say anything we want to use any words we want to criticize anybody we want at any time we want it's all open at school in the neighborhood in our homes we say incredible things to one another we say them with our words we type them into our devices we criticize people brutally and we seem to do it because we want to that's not what god wants us to do that's now not how god envisions our use of the gift of speech strikes me that that's one place we might begin in the season of lent lord guide my speech to build up others to praise others and not to destroy them lent is for all of us not long ago somebody said to me so i i guess it's it's it's tough to preach like every day every sunday and i said you know it's so easy to say the words it's so difficult to hear the words because every time i preach it applies to me please stand together we profess our faith i believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with faith and with confidence we come before the lord with our needs for young people in our church may the grace of the holy spirit open their hearts to the call of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the leaders of nations may the lord provide his grace for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in the world especially in the ukraine let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have fallen away from their faith may christ open their hearts to his mercy and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all struggling with addictions that god will free them from all that holds them bound and help them find the resources that will help them restore their life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the mass intention of teresa ford and for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer lord god we give you thanks for your presence and our lives help us to use the gift of speech wisely and to build up the body of christ as we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] so precious lord take my hand lead me on let me stand i am tired i am weak i am through the storm through [Music] take my hand precious lord [Music] precious when my life is all [Music] my [Music] precious [Music] let us pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god who is the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for all our good and good of all his holy church oh god you provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant us as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up them up to your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord his death we celebrate in love his resurrection we confess with living faith is coming in glory we await with unwavering hope and so with all the saints and angels we proclaim your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of oh [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it but this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit [Music] all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] amen amen [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our fathers [Music] i will be down on earth as it is [Music] as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day and by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom and the power and the glory of yours [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always my you take away the
