good morning everyone i'm going to read to you a letter that all of us received from bishop david zubik regarding the covet protocol so i'll take a moment now to go over this with you dear sisters and brothers in christ given the recent record-breaking surge in positive covet 19 cases in the counties of the diocese i am reminding everyone of the current diocesan safety protocol while in person masses continue i am urgently requesting that everyone do their part to remain vigilant and mitigate the spread of the virus this means that those who are sick have a health risk or are a primary caregiver are excused from the obligation to attend mass that the practice of extending the sign of peace at mass is suspended until further notice the distribution of the precious blood continues to be suspended until further notice given the high transmissibility rates mask wearing is urgently encouraged to for all attending mass regardless of vaccination status priests deacons and all eucharistic ministers must continue to wear masks during the distribution of holy communion and at all times except when speaking all greeters and ushers must wear masks while welcoming parishioners should maintain social distancing and should refrain from handshaking with fellow parishioners as well as we look with hope to a new year filled with god's continued blessings i ask each of you to please join with him in praying for an end to the spread of covet 19 and for health and happiness for all sincerely bishop david a zubik thank you hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] shall be prostrate our nation shall serve in him lord every nation on earth will adore you every nation on earth will adore you a reading from the letter of saint paul to the ephesians brothers and sisters you have heard of the stewardship of god's grace that was given to me for your benefit namely that the mystery was made known to me by revelation it was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit that the gentiles are coheirs members of the same body and co-partners in the promised and christ jesus through the gospel the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] and have come to adore christ the lord [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew when jesus was born in bethlehem of judea in the days of king herod behold magi from the east arrived in jerusalem saying where is the newborn king of the jews we saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage when king herod heard this he was greatly troubled in all jerusalem with him assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people he inquired of them where the christ was to be born they said to him in bethlehem of judea for thus it has been written through the prophet and you bethlehem land of judah are by no means least among the rulers of judah since from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people israel then herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance he sent them to bethlehem and said go and search diligently for the child when you have found him bring me word that i too may go and do him homage after their audience with the king they set out and behold the star that they had seen and its rising preceded them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was they were overjoyed at seeing the star and on entering the house they saw the child with mary his mother they prostrated themselves and did him homage then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh and having been warned in the dream not to return to herod they departed for their country by another way the gospel of the lord there's a story that's told about three young boys five or six years old who were chosen to play the role of the three kings at the school play nativity play and they came down the aisle marching before the manger and they came down with fancy robes and they had kingly hats and they were carrying a box and the first boy with the box laid it down in front of jesus and announced i have brought you gold the second boy came marching down and laid his blob box in front of the infant jesus and announced i have brought you myrrh now the third boy he came down with the dose of stray of stage fright but he plowed through it and he remembered that he was supposed to place the box down in front of the infant jesus and he did that but he forgot the line so with a royal bow as he laid down his box before the manger he announced frank sent this ah it's not too early frankincense frank sent this and we all know that frank didn't send the gift the gift of course was frankincense but the point is that we are all familiar with the story of the visit of the magi who came from a great distance from the east to pay homage to a child born at bethlehem and they presented him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh at the very heart of the story is that mysterious star a star which led the magi to precisely where they needed to be where they wanted to be to the birthplace of the newborn king one light led them to an even greater light who was the lord jesus christ who is the savior of the world and the infant jesus came to shine and to share his light his goodness his generosity his mercy and his love on every one of us including the least the lost the forgotten the ignored the misunderstood the outsider the person who for whatever reason has been pushed to the edges of society and so our god is the god who loves the sinner as well as the saint who loves the conceited as well as the humble who loves the cruel as well as the kind who loves the vengeful as well as the merciful who loves the lost as well as the fountain no exceptions god loves every person in every situation in every time in every place for god everybody everybody is somebody and he came with a love that is transformative for those who are open to welcome and to receive him into their hearts and into their lives the story of the magi coming to the savior of the world shows us that in god's world in god's vision in god's kingdom we all belong we all belong we're all aware that the central theme of the christmas season is the profound truth that god has come to us in the person of jesus christ the emmanuel god with us jesus fulfilled the longing that is built into every human heart the longing for god a longing to see him along to connect with him to be embraced by him and to be one with him the story of the magi reveals to us something important about our own journey of faith in this day and age namely that god desires to come to us god desires to come to us he seeks us out and he rushes to meet us in all ways possible but at the same time god continually invites us to do precisely the same thing to search for him to look for him everywhere to follow that star to journey as far as it takes to share in the light of his love and his goodness and his mercy like the magi we should never be passive and simply sit around waiting and waiting for god to do his part god will always do his part but it is up to each of us to make sure that we too are trying to do our part so that god can get to us and that means that we always need to remain open to his grace his presence his mercy and his goodness as well as the movements and the promptings of the holy spirit within each one of us today like the magi we are invited to step out of our own comfort zones and into the unknown trusting that the lord will always lead us where it is that we need to be the word epiphany itself means a showing or manifestation as a newborn infant jesus was shown to the magi those astrologers from the east who were guided by a brightly lit star to a newborn town to a newborn child in the town of bethlehem we too are called to place our faith and our trust in the light who is jesus christ the one who always always keeps his promises we are called to place our hope in the light the one who has destroyed death forever we are to give our hearts and our lives to that light who is all that we will ever need all that we will ever need and so may we choose to love the light who is jesus anew with our whole heart and our being in order to make the new year before us a better year not only for ourselves but also for others by allowing the light of jesus to shine in us and through us always giving him praise honor and glory by what we say and do for he is indeed the lord and the savior of the world and together we profess our one faith in the living god [Music] visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god and light from light to god and true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was appointed to the virgin mary and became man for our satan was crucified under conscious pilot he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and this kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life the groceries of the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess on baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen loving and gracious god trusting always in your care for us we place before you now our prayers and our needs for the church that as the people of god we will be the continuing manifestation of christ every day so that your goodness and your light and your mercy may shine in us and through us so that we may all arrive one day in the heavenly kingdom where jesus is lord for ever and ever [Music] is [Music] [Music] so most gracious [Music] holy manger [Music] so may we with willing feet [Music] pray sisters and brothers and my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father look with favor lord we pray on these gifts of your church and which are now offered not gold or frankincense or myrrh but he who by them is proclaimed sacrifice and receive jesus christ who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for today you have revealed the mystery of our salvation in christ as a light for the nations and when he appeared in our mortal nature you made us new by the glory of his immortal nature and so with the angels and archangels with thrones and dominions with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing in the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god the blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] amen [Music] oh [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our
