so [Music] so [Music] good morning and welcome to st killian as we begin our lenten journey please stand and join in singing the processional hymn [Music] from the depths we cry to thee god of sovereign majesty hear our prayers and hymns of praise bless our land of forty days gracious god our hearts renew strength it has thy will to do wash us make us pure within us from the stain of sin lord accept our lenten fast and forgive our sinful past that we may partake with thee in this in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit let us pray grant o lord that we may begin this holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint as we ask this through christ our lord amen a reading from the book of joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful he is slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offering and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] lord for we have sinned [Music] [Music] have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from [Music] give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustained in me [Music] o lord hope in my life and my mouth shall proclaim your praises [Music] [Applause] [Music] a reading from the second book of corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] if today you hear his voice heart in not your hearts to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you and when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who like to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their rewards but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you and when you're fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord i would imagine a fairly common experience for most of us is a field trip it happens in schools it happens in life we take a field trip with a group of people to somewhere else and there's some things that are pretty common about field trips you're with people who are all going to the same place you're not alone you're with others and there's something common about everybody in fact in a lot of field trips you wear the same t-shirt or you have the same scarf there's something that you wear or something about you that says oh you're part of that group and then there's the destination if it's a museum or a park or cedar point you're going somewhere and i thought about that and i would like to compare lent to a field trip not everybody does that but i think there's a lot of things that are common so often in our lives we feel alone we feel like we're the only one that feels this or the only one that's experienced this but for lent we're really all the same we came to church today because we want to be on this journey and we're all in it together and so we will mark our foreheads with a common mark so that when you leave church anybody who sees you says oh they're on that journey they're with that group and the destination is critically important it's not a park it's not cedar point it's not even a place or a thing it's a person on this journey this lent we're journeying toward jesus and it's not just for an afternoon or a day it's for eternity and how do we prepare to get to that destination and i think the preparation is that we're going to someone who loves us so much and someone who told us that you need to demonstrate your love for me by the way you love one another so knowing that that's the destination and i'm on that journey i better be prepared for the talk that i'll have with jesus before i enter eternal life and so throughout this journey this field trip we're going on i need to root out in my life those things that i wouldn't want to talk about with jesus the things that would make me feel ashamed the things that would make me feel not proud at all i don't want them to be part of my journey because at the end of my journey is a conversation with jesus so as we begin this season of lent with the church throughout the world there's a lot of similarities and some differences between this journey and a field trip but it helps us to ponder to think about what we're about to do in this lenten journey toward jesus we're going to distribute ashes at this point there'll be four people distributing ashes in the middle in the back and then there'll be someone distributing ashes to each of the grades along the front two on the sides by the wall and two here so [Music] so [Music] do so [Music] with these ashes [Music] with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes we walk these forty days and nights called by your grace we answer in faith o lead us to your life with these ashes with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes [Music] with voices raised we share your word called by your grace we answer in faith oh lord let our cry be heard with these ashes [Music] with these ashes we turn our hearts to yours [Music] these ashes [Music] we give as you would have us do called by your grace we answer in lord faith us back with these ashes with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes [Music] with prayer and service we will answer your call with voices raised we share your word called by your grace we answer in faith o lord [Music] with these ashes [Music] with these ashes we turn our hearts to you daughters and sons we journey as one with these ashes [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so please stand with confidence and with faith we come before the lord with our needs for the church may the lord strengthen and sustain her in her ministry of healing in the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for world leaders may god inspire them in safeguarding all human life born and unborn weak and strong old and young let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who feel estranged from god may our merciful lord embrace them and give them comfort and hope in his promises let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for this faith community may the holy spirit help us to follow the way of christ's mercy and love let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for our beloved dead and all those who have died may they know the forgiveness of god and come to share in the fullness of christ's glory let us pray to the lord for the parish intention for this mass the living and deceased members of saint kilian parish and for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord we pray also for the people of ukraine and for those nations who have opened their borders to receive those fleeing from warfare for all of them we pray to the lord lord god we give you thanks for the gift of the season of grace may we use these days to grow closer to you and to one another as we make this prayer through christ our lord [Music] return to god with all your heart and source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness of god return to god with all your heart the source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness of god now the time of grace has come the day of salvation come and learn now the way of our god return to god with all your heart the source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness of god return to god with all your the source of grace and mercy come seek the tender faithfulness [Music] let us pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god who is the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all this holy church oh lord as we solemnly offer this annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat your mercy that through the works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed of our sins become worthy to celebrate with devotion the passion of your son who lives and reigns for ever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just [Music] our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that ourself self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and help us imitate you in your kindness and so with all the saints and angels we proclaim your glory as with one voice we acclaim holy heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Applause] lord [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father [Music] in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] oh [Music] man amen [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom of the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] god you take away the sins of the world [Music] have mercy on us [Music] you take away the sins of the world [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word my soul shall be healed um [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so be still and know that i am god you are my chosen one to [Music] be is and know that i am [Music] know that i am god you are my chosen one i came to set you free give me your cares and rest in me be still and know that i am god [Music] be still and know that i am god you are my chosen one to whom i show my ways [Music] and know that [Music] am [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so so so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] let us pray for god pour forth the spirit of compassion in each one of us as we bow before your majesty and by your mercy may we merit the reward our lord amen the thought for the week is about that journey that lent is kind of a practice it's a rehearsal for our lifelong journey to jesus and so during lent we need to get rid of anything anything that we wouldn't want to talk about with jesus at the end of our lives it's a wonderful season of grace a wonderful journey the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorify the lord by your life [Music] through how these fourteen days [Music] victory oh give us strength in you to fight in you to conquer sin as you did hunger bear and thirst so teach us gracious [Music] live by your most holy word
