sunday of lent please stand and join us in singing the opening song foreign as you victory so teach us gracious [Music] through these [Music] oh in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you and with your spirit as we join in the lenten journey of the church toward easter we gather at the lord's banquet the source of our strength and we begin by asking for god's forgiveness and mercy lord in this time of repentance we call out for your mercy [Music] kirigay hey [Music] christ you bring us to new life through your cross creekest [Music] lord you nourish us with your body and blood carry hey [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us and forgive us our sins and bring us to an everlasting life let us pray almighty god grant that through the yearly observance of holy lent we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects as we ask this through christ our lord a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wondering aramean who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble with me lord when i am in trouble you who dwell in the shelter of the most high [Music] who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust be with me [Music] [Applause] [Music] no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways [Music] [Applause] [Music] am in trouble upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against our stone [Music] you shall tread upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am trouble [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what the scriptures say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread and jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone and then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant and the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whoever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me and jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve and then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guide you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone and jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord in the first reading moses is addressing the people and he raises for them three questions where have you come from what have you become and what is your destiny powerful questions where have you come from moses knew the answer and so did the people you were slaves in egypt and you made bricks for pharaoh that's where you were never forget that and what have you become look around moses says you are a vast people you are a nation that's what you've become and what is your destiny and your destiny is the promised land those three questions were incredibly important for the people of israel never to forget them but most importantly to answer them but those questions aren't just important to a community of people that live thousands of years ago they're important for people like you and me where have you come from what have you become what is your destiny in my ministry over many years i've done a lot of funerals and i have found that funerals apart from the sacramental notion of praying for the deceased and for the loved ones are moments of incredible openness and inspiration to people who attend them i can remember one and it was in an old church in an old neighborhood that had begun to show its age and was beginning to be stressed and there was a young man there who was the son of the deceased woman and i talked to him after the funeral and he said to me it's good to be here this church this neighborhood i forgot where i came from i forgot what this means to me i lost my roots but he said look at me i am a young successful and wealthy person but i don't have a clue where i'm going he had the questions and i can't help but think that seeing his mother deceased made the answers so much more important to him at that moment he had no idea where he was going how sad and it strikes me that those three questions and that young man's experience are important for us in our lenten journey where have you come from we can't afford to forget our roots basic biology tells us that the roots are important because that's where the nutrients come for the plant and that doesn't change our roots can teach us about realities that are so critical our roots can remind us of the joy we had early in our lives before we became critical and cynical where did we come from and what have we become so many of the commercials on tv there's somebody looking in a mirror and they're selling something of course but when we look in a mirror we need to see more than just a few gray hairs or an aging skin what have we become are we satisfied that with the person we see in the mirror the person everyone sees every day are we satisfied with what we have become and finally do we know where our we're going what's our destiny and it's the same destiny that moses spoke of to his people it's the promised land it's not here it's eternity we shouldn't need a funeral to remind us of those powerful questions where did you come from what have you become what is your destiny and it's not just enough to have the questions what are the answers please stand together we profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of the heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with faith and with confidence we come before the lord with our needs for church leaders may they be strengthened by our prayers as they continue to spread the message of god's love throughout the world let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who are especially at risk in the ukraine africa and the middle east that they will not lose hope and that peace will prevail let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for each of us that during them peace and comfort let us pray to the lord [Music] for the parish intention for this mass vince palmeri and for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord lord god we give you thanks for your presence and our lives help us to use these days of lent to realize that our full destiny rests in you as we make this prayer through christ our lord [Music] it's jesus is truly right and just our duty and our salvation [Music] always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and help us imitate you in your kindness and so with all the saints and angels we proclaim your glory as with one voice we are acclaimed [Music] oh [Music] my you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith you is again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and they praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit glory and honor is yours forever [Music] oh [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] is [Music] us is [Music] [Music] my sins [Music] please
