[Music] um [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning and welcome to saint killian please rise for the processional hymn is your great name we pray [Music] of goodness in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you once again as we gather at the lord's banquet we begin by asking for god's forgiveness and mercy lord jesus you raise us to new life lord have mercy lord have mercy lord jesus you forgive us of our sins christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus you feed us with your body and blood lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us and forgive us our sins and bring us to an everlasting life let us pray almighty god grant that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you as we ask this through christ our lord a reading from the book of james beloved who among you is wise and understanding let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom but if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts do not boast and be false to the truth wisdom of this kind does not come from down above but is earthly unspiritual demonic from where jealousy and selfish ambition exist there is disorder in every foul practice but the wisdom from above is first of all pure then peaceable gentle compliant full of mercy and good fruits without inconstancy or insincerity and the fruits of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace the word of the lord thanks be to god so the precepts of the lord give joy to the heart the precepts of the lord give joy to the [Music] give joy to the [Music] the love of the lord is perfect it revives the soul the decrees of the lord are steadfast they give wisdom [Music] give joy to our hearts the precepts of the [Music] lord he's pure abiding forever the judgments of the lord are true of them just the precipice [Music] give joy to the lord so in them your servant finds instruction great reward is in their keeping but who can detect their own errors [Music] of the lord [Music] lord [Music] oh [Music] lord your servant is listening you have the words of everlasting life [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you lord as jesus came down from the mountain with peter james dawned and approached the other disciples they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them immediately on seeing him the whole crowd was utterly amazed they ran up to him and greeted him and he asked them what are you arguing about with them someone from the crowd answered him teacher i have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit and whenever it sees him it throws him down he foams at the mouth grinds his teeth and becomes rigid i ask your disciples to drive it out but they were unable to do some and he said to them in reply o faithless generation how long will i be with you how long will i adore you bring him to me they brought the boy to him and when he saw him the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions and as he fell to the ground he began to roll around and foam at the mouth and then he questioned his father how long has this been happening to him and he replied since childhood it has often thrown him into fire into water to kill him but if you can do anything have compassion on us and help us and jesus said to him if you can everything is possible to one who has faith and then the boy's father cried out i do believe help my gun believe and jesus on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it mute and deaf spirit i command you come out of him and never enter him again and shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions it came out he became like a corpse which caused many to say he is dead but jesus took him by the hand raised him up and she stood up and when he entered the house his disciples asked him in private why could we not drive out the spirit and he said to them this kind can only come out through prayer the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ from time to time i hear middle school students in other schools of course not here say they read all those words from the bible at mass they realize that those are 2 000 years old right what could people 2 000 years ago say to me that would make a difference seemingly they would believe that old things aren't helpful it's yesterday that matters today that matters so in the first reading we hear two thousand year old words from a letter written by a man named james and he talks about two words he talks about jealousy and selfishness now i can't imagine that those two words are irrelevant to you i can't imagine that those two words aren't something that should concern you they are they have to be jealousy jealousy is really dangerous because jealousy means that i focus on what i don't have i focus on what other people have and i lack and i become bitter i become angry sometimes i become disappointed because i don't have those things what's dangerous is that it focuses us on one aspect of our lives and misses the rest which is what i do have so i don't have a house in florida okay but i have a very comfortable house right on this property oh i don't have this but i have these things huh it almost says to god you haven't given me enough other people have a lot more than i do and i want more it's almost saying god you don't know what i need or you don't care what i want who says that to god we do too often jealousy's dangerous selfishness is also dangerous selfishness says the only thing that matters is me my siblings don't matter my classmates don't matter my parents don't matter nobody matters except me and what i want that doesn't sound foreign does it it doesn't sound like it belongs 2 000 years ago it sounds like it belongs today because sometimes we feel that way and we bracket out everyone else and their needs and we focus on ourselves as if the whole world revolved around us you know it doesn't right it really doesn't you're an important part of the whole body of christ but you're only a part you're not all of it jealousy and selfishness are not 2 000 year old words alone they're words that are important today and how it involves us even more deeply is in terms of friendships i think that's something that you know and something that's really important to you think it for a moment think about it that if you're picking a friend and you say well i'm looking for somebody that is filled with jealousy and filled with selfishness that's what i want in a friend who says that who wants that but if you don't want that in a friend why do you allow it to be true in your life please stand with confidence we come before the lord with our needs for the entire body of christ may the holy spirit guide us in wisdom to follow god's commands let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for public authorities may they be graced with our heavenly father's wisdom in their deliberation of policy let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all struggling with mental illness may the lord bless them with the help and support they need let us pray to the lord r for our faith community may god continue to draw us closer to him in love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the faithful departed especially those who have no one else to pray for them may god grant them eternal rest let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the parish intention for this mass dale carvin and for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer god we give you thanks for your presence in our lives help us to find the courage to root out from our lives traces of selfishness and jealousy which draw us away from you and one another as we make this prayer through christ our lord hmm [Music] brought here together [Music] with grateful joy [Music] forgive me now each other's toes [Music] let us pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god who is the almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church oh lord as we celebrate your mysteries with the observance that is due we humbly ask that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord his death we celebrate in love [Music] his resurrection we confess with living faith his coming in glory we await with unwavering hope and so with all the saints and angels we proclaim your glory as without end we acclaim oh [Music] god [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broken and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith death therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father [Music] in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] amen [Music] [Applause] [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] our fathers [Music] our [Music] is [Applause] [Music] is [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and save from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] [Music] yours forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] of god you take away the sins of the word have mercy on us [Music] mercy on [Music] take us the sins of the lord [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed me [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Laughter] the love of christ joins us together let us rejoice in him [Music] communion let us gather may heard of visions and in their place be christ [Music] of peace [Music] is [Music] may we gather at this table to share the bread [Music] your healing touch [Music] for those in indeed make us your mercy for those oppressed your might make us of justice [Music] may we one [Music] to day rejoicing with the saints of god [Music] last [Music] r [Music] let us pray almighty god grant we pray that we may experience the effects of the salvation you have pledged to us by these sacred mysteries through christ our lord i'm sure one of the things that is most on your mind these days is what are you going to do for lent well that's not too far away it's next week next wednesday so one of the suggestions i would have is that you make part of your lenten cycle to sing at mass to participate at mass i know it's too easy to hide behind a mask because no one knows if you're singing or not but god knows but i think it's important we all gather at the lord's banquet to worship together and we need to hear our voices the ironic thing is that my lenten resolutions include reminding you to sing at mass so we'll all try thought for the day is about jealousy and selfishness and how really that doesn't help anybody it doesn't help us it doesn't help people with whom we live or with whom we study every day we need to really work hard against jealousy and selfishness the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in peace glorifying the lord by your life [Applause] praise let the creators [Applause] everyone [Music] you
