more information on these and other liturgies and events in our parish please check the bulletin or the mqp website today's readings we hear the following sirach writes of revealing the quality of things pottery in a furnace a shaken sieve the fruit of a tree and the speech of a person saint paul affirms jesus's victory over sin and death in the gospel of luke jesus teaches that a person with a store of goodness in his or her heart produces good while a store of evil produces evil we all know there are times when something slips out in our speech or we react more strongly than we intended the scriptures today alert us to the relationship of what is in our hearts and minds with what is on our lips only goodness can overcome evil and produce goodness as we participate in the holy sacrifice of the mass let us reflect on how sacred scripture reminds us that from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks and let us now take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to receive the lord in word and sacrament [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries lord jesus you came to gather the nations into the peace of god's kingdom lord have mercy lord jesus your coming word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness christ have mercy lord jesus you will come in glory with salvation for your people lord have mercy [Music] almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] and on earth [Music] we praise you [Music] we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] you take away the sins of the world [Music] the sins of the world receive our prayers me [Music] jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god [Music] let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of sirach when a sieve is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shows the carrot has had so too does one's speech disclose the bent of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord so lord is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you thanks to you to give you [Music] it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night [Music] to give thanks to you the just one shall flourish shall flourish in the courts of our god lord it to is to give back we shall bear fruit even in old age with vigorous shall they be declaring how just my lord it is good to give thanks to you to give thanks to you [Music] to give thanks to you [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory whereo death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] in the world as you hold on to the words [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to saint luke jesus told his disciples the parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden being in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor doesn't a rodent tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from torn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brainless a good person out of the store of the goodness of his heart produces good but an evil person out of the store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord throughout this liturgical year as we continue to go through the gospel of luke that we'll see that the theme of sight is frequently used to represent spiritual understanding uh to represent the spiritual understanding that forms the foundation or the basis for being a true disciple of jesus christ that is that sight is an essential aspect of faith we've already heard some of those examples earlier in this liturgical year christmas time we we heard that the after the angel announced the good news to them the shepherds what did they do well they went to bethlehem to see for themselves and when they saw the infant lying in the manger they glorified and praised god for all that they had seen and when jesus was brought to the temple to be presented to the lord there was a faith-filled man there named simeon who had been waiting waiting for years for this moment and when that moment arrived he took the baby jesus in his arms and exclaimed to god my eyes have seen your salvation and as jesus began his ministry in galilee he one of the first things he did to kind of announce the start of his mission his ministry in the synagogue in his hometown he cited the prophet isaiah in reference to the mission his father had given him which was this to bring recovery of sight to the blind and after one of his early miracles healing the paralytic after he healed the paralytic there was astonishment that seized everyone and they glorified god saying we have seen incredible things today there's an aspect of all these scripture references that point to that saying seeing is believing and sometimes we associate that saying with lack of belief like prove it to me right i want to see it to believe we also say that sometimes we say that faith is blind we've heard that phrase before too so which is it well we could say it's both but it kind of depends what we're talking about when we're talking about sight and blindness and seeing and not seeing faith is blind in that it's not entirely based on what we see and sense with our physical eyes at the same time faith is the ability to see to see beyond what's perceived with just our physical eyes it's an ability that is a free gift from god faith is a free gift from god that is strengthened or weakened by how we take care of that gift right how we kind of manage our ability to see can a baby born in a stable and then brought to the temple by two parents who can only afford the minimal offering can that baby be the son of the most high god can the son of joseph the carpenter that we know who grew up in our back country town of nazareth can he be the long-awaited messiah can a paralytic suddenly be able to rise and walk freely can that be somehow related to what it's like for a paralyzed soul to be forgiven and set free from sin can the one we saw hanging on the cross the one who was buried in the tomb the one we hoped would redeem us can he be risen from the dead these are all examples of events that real people saw with their own eyes they weren't blind to these things but it was their faith that allowed them to see beyond to see the deeper meaning of what god was revealing to them and each time that we spend time with these scriptural accounts every time we meditate upon sacred scripture we allow these witnesses to lend their eyes of faith to us to help us grow stronger in our own sight our own ability to see the deeper meaning of what we experience in our lives now here today in today's gospel jesus asked a sight-related question can a blind person guide a blind person it's a rhetorical question meant to make a statement without requiring an explicit answer no of course not it's not recommended for a blind person to guide a blind person because that'd be dangerous they might both get hurt yet don't we see it all the time not with those who are physically blind but rather with those who are spiritually blind we see it all the time including with ourselves right in the ways that we're spiritually blind whether knowingly or not whenever we spend time being influenced by those who are spiritually blind those who lack faith we're putting ourselves in danger of falling into a pit again there are ways that all of us as human beings are spiritually blind and needing to grow stronger in our sight and in our faith as jesus is encouraging us today we need to stop looking to those blind guides and start looking for those guides who have eyes of faith if a guide is causing me to decrease in my faith hope or love i need to recognize that's a blind guide leading me into a pit and if a guide that is someone that i'm spending time reading on the internet or talking with in person if a guide has caused me to doubt or reject god well i need to recognize that's a blind guide leading me to a pit if a guide is causing me to grow more in anger that's a blind guide leading me into a pit the guide is causing me to grow more in lust that's a blind guide leading me to a pit if the god is causing me to grow more in envy anxiety fear gossip or any other kind of immorality i need to recognize and make a choice to know that this is a blind guy leading me to a pit i can go through all seven deadly sins i can go through all ten commandments i think you get the idea recognize it and make a choice we do have a free will to choose who our guides are we don't have to spend time being influenced and being led into a pit can a blind guide can a blind person guide a blind person yes yes he can but he can only do so by leading someone into a pit last week i was on retreat and i was blessed by god with a guide who helped me help me grow in faith help me to see things more clearly help me to see more clearly the ways that i've been walking towards pits in my own lives in my own life helped me experience a new level of freedom from from the paralysis that sin causes in my soul help me grow more in faith hope and love you may recall couple weeks ago i preached about my deceased desert rose plant right the lord showed me on retreat that that plant was me in many ways right that he you know i poked at my plant and i saw the rot when i broke through it the lord does that in a more gentle way he pokes at us when we're on retreat or we're spending time with him and he says this is where there's a little bit of rot and his healing touch doesn't break through like i did to my desert rose his touch brings healing and restoration and new life where there is rot every tree is known by its fruit and thanks be to god i experienced the good fruit of the lord last week and tonight we begin our three night lenten parish mission what is a parish mission we know what a mission is we know what a missionary is what's a missionary anybody know what a missionary is what do they usually do is anybody who's heard of a missionary before okay what does a missionary usually do they preach they proclaim the gospel where do they go usually those who haven't heard before right so we typically think of a mission or missionary is going out to those who've never heard the good news never heard the gospel uh they need to be converted right so uh people who don't believe yet so what does it mean for us as a parish to have a mission well a parish mission is when someone from outside our parish a preacher will come and preach the faith to us in any ways that we as a parish or individually have developed blind spots in our faith it's healthy to have a preacher or missionary come and preach the faith to us right anyways that we're still not yet believing it's helpful and healthy to have someone from the outside come and preach the faith to us to be sent on mission to us to give us a boost in faith so starting tonight we have we welcoming bart shoots who's come a long way to inspire our faith with his preaching and also welcome mark mckellar who's come a long way to inspire our faith through praise and worship and song bart and mark are missionaries in every sense of the word maybe not we would typically think of a missionary but they have left behind their homes they've left behind their wives and their children they left behind the comforts of their of their surroundings and they've come here they've traveled hundreds thousands of miles to a place that is somewhat foreign to them to help us grow in faith to humbly offer to us the gift of faith that god has given them through the things that they've seen in their lives as disciples it's really important for us as a parish to honor that to honor this gift that is being given to us by god by these missionaries uh and to welcome not only the personal sacrifice that they've made to be with us but to also honor the gift that jesus is giving us by picking them and sending them to us it's really important that we honor this gift by making every effort to be here hopefully all three nights or as many nights as you can furthermore not is it just a good sign of hospitality and respect to what the lord is giving us it's important for us individually as disciples to make every effort to be here for these mission talks doing all we can every resource and gift the lord gives us to help us avoid our own blind spots to be healed of those and also to spend some intentional time away from there's plenty of blind guides in the world right that we're exposed to constantly that are so prevalent our world and intentionally spend time with those guides who are going to help us grow in faith it's critical it's essential for us being authentic and true disciples of jesus christ the lord loves each one of you so so much and he deeply desires for each one of us to be set free from those things that blind our faith to be set free from the paralysis that sin causes in our soul to be healed in any ways that our souls are beginning to experience rot or bad fruit that he wants to heal and restore the lord deeply desires that all of us no longer have just blind faith but rather that we will see his goodness for ourselves today we are celebrating the right of sending sending forth our catechumens and candidates to the cathedral next week for being presented to to the bishop so this time we're welcome to remain seated we'll welcome forward kevin mccarthy our catechist from our rcia this community and joined with them in prayer and so i announce to all of you here that our community supports these candidates and their desire therefore i ask their sponsors to state their opinion his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for coffee and donuts after this mass you're welcome to join us in the social hall for uh some fellowship and some some treats and also like to welcome forward our missionaries bart and mark to come 80 degrees i'm from tallahassee florida and uh i just want to invite you i'm here on a mission and i want to invite you guys to join us we start at seven o'clock tonight and we're gonna keep it relatively brief uh for a mission you'll be able to get out of here within an hour and a half but i'm thinking you might not want to be i love it here i love this guy here father chad green i met him when he was in seminary he came to our first seminary program in tallahassee and uh i've i've been a big fan of his hopefully you guys feel the same way and i love being here i think the last time we hear we did a men on fire how many of you were here men all right we're going to see more hands later i think and we had a great time i love it here i love i love you guys because i look at you guys as leaders you guys as influencers and you guys who think big saint catherine of siena says this become who you are meant to be and you will set the earth on fire i love that because she's saying just be you just be who you are be who god created you to be and uh we're going to talk a little bit about that but i want to share this from pope francis now i know i travel the country and i know there's there's split opinions about our pope but he's our pope and these words right here are very inspirational and i believe they're words from god and i hope they inspire you they inspire me let me read it to you real quick and i'll have you out of here in the next 45 minutes i'm kidding i know what it's like so pope francis said this an authentic faith always involves a deep desire to change the world do you have a deep desire to change the world and this is the question we must ask ourselves so let's do that let's ask ourselves some questions do we too have great vision in zeal are we bold do our dreams fly high are we consumed by zeal do you have great vision are you bold do your dreams fly high are you consumed with zeal or pope goes on to say are we mediocre and satisfied with our theoretical apostolic plans the church's strength is not in its organizational capacity but rather is concealed in the deep waters of god that agitate our desires and these desires in turn expand our hearts church we're living in a major move of god and the church of yesterday is no more we're coming into something new and it's a really good season and a really good time for the church and i believe god is agitating our desires and i believe he wants to expand our hearts and i just want to strongly encourage you to come over these next three nights and allow the spirit of god to set us on fire with his love so we can have an authentic faith and a deep desire to change the world i hope to see you tonight seven o'clock god bless [Applause] hey guys my name is mark um we're going to be having worship at this as well and just to give you a little taste we're just going to sing a little bit of a song that i know i love and i'm pretty sure you guys are familiar with as well it's called lord i need you i'm not sure if you can hear my guitar but that is totally cool so sing this with me lord i need you oh i need you every hour i need you my one defense my righteousness oh god how i need here lord i come i confess bowing here i find my rest without you i fall apart you're the one that guides my heart lord i need you i need you [Music] every hour i need you my one defense my righteousness oh god how i need you [Applause] thank you bart and mark and bart said you can be out of here an hour and a half but you can also stay after 8 30. we will have social time and fellowship and maybe discussions and things that are moving your heart in the social hall from 8 30 to 9 30. so be sure to uh if you're feeling moved to talk and share what the lord is doing with you after we have the time here in the church come to the social hall and share that with with your fellow fellow disciples and let's be seeing guides for each other right that's what we we as people of faith let's encourage one another and help each other see see god more clearly lord be with you r may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go in peace and proclaim the gospel of the lord with one voice the angels sing songs that make creation [Music] is [Music] grace will make the darkness [Music] love has come to show [Music] hallelujah [Music] thank you
