The Sunday Mass – 1st Sunday of Lent – March 6, 2022 CC

[Music] when he calls on me i will answer him he shall call upon me and i will answer here i will rescue him and bring him to honor with long life will i satisfy him and show him my salvation when he calls on me i will answer here glory to the father and to the son unto the holy spirit as it was in the beginning is [Music] [Music] in the name of the father and the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you came to call sinners curie you never spurn the humble and contrite christians [Music] you plead for us at your father's right hand hearing [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us may he forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life on amen let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches of christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priests shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramaian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cry to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] shelter of the most high [Music] say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust [Music] me with me [Music] no evil shall be for you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god has raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame [Music] for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him [Music] for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] jesus [Music] the lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him the kingdoms all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me as i may and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand in the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it is also written you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ the word of the gospel cleanses from our sins so we've begun lent and we have this every first sunday of every lent we have this gospel or some other version of it and it speaks of jesus temptations in the desert before i get into each of them i want you to notice though how jesus resists these temptations to every temptation of the devil jesus answers with scripture you see scripture saint paul speaks of scripture as the sword of the spirit sometimes you see images of saint michael with a sword coming at at satan and but remember a sword can no longer could no more harm the devil than a thought could be harmed by a sword the devil the devil is has no body but but again what what is going on here is that this this this sword represents the word of god you see we we resist satan by being deeply rooted in the word of god it is the real battleground is in our mind you know the we need to be restored and renewed by the renewing of our minds and either god's word is going to be our predominant way of thinking and understanding or to be the world of the devil we have a choice to make and so for the whole battle of lent staying close to scripture and asking god to really anoint you because through scripture i can say i've been reading scripture for 40 more than 40 years of my 60 years and i can say that it's changed my mind my priorities are different everything so many of the things the decisions i make are different and i'm glad and i've got ways to go but i tell you it is a great thing now these temptations come there are three listed and you know some people say they want to recep all the temptations maybe but we'll just look at them each in turn the first one is about our passions he says man you're hungry man get some bread scratch word itches man and he says no no one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes so again to simply you know just scratch where it itches to always fulfill our desires you see sometimes god says no that's too much you're not enough or that's not for you and so again we have to take authority over our passions and desires it is said here also that um again their power glory popularity will be yours if you just worship me says satan just worship me and that's what the world says worship me the prince of this world says worship me you have power fame and glory yeah and then you die and go to hell so again we have to take heed of this and then finally we see it says here that presumption now just throw yourself down from the parapet god will save you you know there's a lot of sins committed today because of presumption oh god doesn't really care god doesn't mind it'll be all right i won't you know and i'm going to tell you right now god will not be mocked and it simply says you shall not put your lord the god your god to the test and so this is a very big area too of of sins that we need to repent of where we just brush away god's concerns and we don't follow the gospel so today the beginning of lent now it started ash wednesday commit yourself this lent to study the word of god and let it anoint your mind and heart amen i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who receives from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen god our father allowed his only son to be tempted in the desert we make our prayers to him in this lent confident that he who always hears our voice when we call him will be with us in our needs for the church and her leaders may they always live and teach the truths of the catholic faith in love and simplicity we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those in public service may they not fall to the temptation of favoring only the powerful but seek in all their deliberations solutions for the whole community we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for an openness to life within the sacrament of marriage and an increase in vocations to the priesthood religious life and permanent diaconate we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all those burdened by serious temptations may they know that they are never alone and when they call on jesus he will help them through their need we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer father in all of our temptations may we call upon you who are ever ready to help us through christ our lord amen [Music] lord who through [Music] teach us to overcome our sins [Music] victory win oh give us strength in you to fight in you to conquer sin as you did hunger and dethirst so teach us gracious lord to die to self and [Music] please pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father praise glory amen give us the right dispositions oh lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you r up your hearts [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty eternal god through christ our lord for by abstaining for forty long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over to to at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with all the angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without and we acclaim [Music] holy lord god of hosts [Music] [Applause] blessed is he who comes in [Music] [Applause] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving you thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] and resurrection [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord at your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity uh together with francis our pope wilton our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all those who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles with all the saints who will please you throughout the ages that we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] [Applause] [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us o lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not upon our sins but on the faith of your church graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] oh you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] take away the sins of the world behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sin of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed corpus dominion austria is [Music] one does not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from god [Music] the love of the lord is perfect refreshing the soul the decree of the lord is trustworthy giving wisdom to the sin one does not live on [Music] the command of the lord is clear enlightening [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and strive to live by every word that proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord [Music] have a great lent and especially if you're homebound stay close to the sacraments and make sure again they pray for all combat service of my father when the opportunity arose as a b-52 pilot to go overseas i put my name in the hat as quickly as i could my grandfather had joined the knights of columbus during world war ii and freshman year i really felt called to join while i was deployed to qatar i also noticed that there was a great number of care packages that were going unused i had the opportunity to work with deployed knights of columbus we took that off base to help the hundreds of thousands of migrants and qatar i think today more than ever we need men that are dedicated to charity unity fraternity and patriotism and i'm proud to be a knight of columbus [Music]
