and bring us to an everlasting life [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify [Music] oh lord jesus [Music] you christ away the sins of the world [Music] mercy on us [Music] jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god [Music] and on earth [Music] let us pray oh lord keep your family safe with unfailing care that relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace they may be defended always by your protection as we ask this through christ our lord a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah in the year king uzziah died i saw the lord seated on a high and lofty throne with the train of his garment filling the temple seraphim were stationed above they cried one to the other holy holy holy is the lord of hosts all the earth is filled with his glory at the sound of that cry the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke then i said woe is me i am doomed for i am a man of unclean lips living among a people of unclean lips yet my eyes have seen the king the lord of hosts then one of the seraphim flew to me holding an amber that he had taken with tongs from the altar he touched my mouth with it and said see now that this has touched your lips your wickedness is removed your sin purged then i heard the voice of the lord saying whom shall i send who will go for us here i am i said send me the word of the lord [Music] in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord i will give thanks to you o lord with all my heart for you have heard the words of my mouth in the presence of the angels i will sing your praise i will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name [Music] in the sight of i will sing your praises lord because of your kindness and your truth for you have made great above all things your name and your promise when i called you answered me you built up strength within me in the sight of the angels will sing your praises lord all the kings of the earth shall give thanks to you o lord when they hear the words of your mouth and they shall sing of the ways of the lord great is the glory of the lord in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises a reading from the first book of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters i hand it on to you as the first importance what i also received that christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures that he appeared to suffice then to the twelve after that he appeared to more than 500 brothers at once most of whom are still living though some have fallen asleep after that he appeared to james then to all the apostles last of all as to one abnormally born he appeared to me therefore whether it be i or they so we preach and so you believed the word of the lord hallelujah [Applause] come after me and i will make you fishers of men [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke while the crowd was pressing in on jesus and listening to the word of god he was standing by the lake of jenezeret he saw two boats there alongside the lake the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets getting into one of the boats the one belonging to simon he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat after he had finished speaking he said to simon put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch simon said in reply master we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing but at your command i will lower the nets when they had done this they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and to help them they came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking when simon peter saw this he fell at the knees of jesus saying depart from me lord for i am a sinful man for astonishment at the great catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him and likewise james and john the sons of zebedee who were partners of simon jesus said to simon do not be afraid from now on you will be catching men when they brought their boats to the shore they left everything and followed him the gospel of the lord in the scripture readings we just heard we hear about three people isaiah the prophet saint paul the apostle and peter the apostle and all three of them were really different kinds of personalities people who were successful in many ways in what they did in daily life what's common to all of them is that god reaches into their lives and calls them and sends them forth for a mission for a ministry can you imagine what that must have been like to be going about your daily life and all of a sudden you encounter god god or jesus and they speak to you and they tell you this is what i want you to do what's that like and i think in the gospel we get a glimpse of it when jesus says to peter come go out into the deeper water deep water depending on how you fish and what you're using and who the fish are what the fish are you can catch a lot of fish in the shallows but going out into deep water is always challenging you never know what's going to happen it's sometimes frightening and for isaiah and for paul and for peter the invitation to come into deep water was all of that it was frightening and yet god says to them do not be afraid i will provide for you what you need and all three did it they didn't say yes because it was a better job or they lived in buffalo and it was in florida or they were going to make more money deep within them they felt the calling to answer god and to do what god was asking and they trusted that god would give them what they needed and what we know of their lives god was true to his word and he gave them what they needed i wonder if something like that doesn't happen to us that pretty much often we prefer to live in the shallows where no matter what happens our feet could be on some support and we could at least get out and we try to do what we can but we like to play the safest course and god then reaches into our lives and says i want you to do this and we feel the call we feel that god is giving us the opportunity to do something and it isn't necessarily preaching all around the mediterranean or all the things that isaiah or peter or paul did sometimes it's a simple thing like forgiving someone who has done something terrible to us or reaching out and helping someone who is not the nicest of people or making a decision to change the course of our lives to do something different a new job a new place to live it's all deep water it's scary truly frightening that god is saying to us as he did to isaiah peter and paul do not be afraid i will provide you what you need i was ordained a priest at 26 years old and i thought i'd been going to school far too long i knew everything anyway and i was ready for no matter what would come and then after four days i sat in a confessional and i thought i've never done this before and they always say you know you can tell a priest anything he's always heard it before i heard nothing before and in that first week and in every week thereafter i heard myself say things that i knew were not coming from me and i shared insights that i knew were not mine and in all honesty i felt god's presence in that sacrament and in so many others making up for what was lacking in me i was in deep water and i was afraid but god was true to his word and he gave me what i needed to be his servant and that can happen for every single one of us if we have the courage to go out into that deep water and leave the safety of the shallows what's in it for us well clearly for paul and peter and isaiah eternal life was the response well that's out there what about here well this was catholic schools week and in many of the schools our two schools the students wrote letters to people who were in their lives and who helped them and made an impression on them and so most of us that work in the schools got a letter or two or three and this is one of the letters i got and it says this it's not long it's just big print dear father bober thank you for everything you do to make this church wonderful you are a big help to this school everybody appreciates you so much again thank you sincerely juliana that's a nice letter and it says that not only will we be rewarded in eternity and not only god will provide for us what we need but people will see and appreciate that we're in the deep water and we're not perfect and we can't make everything perfect but we're doing the best we can will you go out into that deep water and answer the call of the lord please stand together we profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true love from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven it is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son has adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death oh lord unto [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and
