morning sky the king shall come when mourning gods and light and duty brings el lord lord thy people pray come quickly king of kings [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you my dear friends in christ this night we begin the season of advent a time of watching and waiting for the coming of the lord this advent wreath reminds us of our yearning for god its circular shape tells us of god's everlasting love and faithfulness its evergreen branches tell us of eternal life and of god's desire for us to live with him forever the four candles remind us of the passing of time our human history into which god has entered through his son jesus this is a time of grace a time for a new advent of jesus into our lives on this first sunday of advent we focus on the lord's second coming let us heed the gospel words of jesus be on guard be prepared on our um [Music] man [Music] you [Applause] [Music] [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to an everlasting life let us pray almighty god grant your faithful the resolve to run forth to meet your christ with righteous deeds at his coming so that gathered at his right hand they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom as we ask this through christ our lord a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah the days are coming says the lord when i will fulfill the promise i made to the house of israel and judah in those days in that time i will raise up for david a just shoot he shall do what is right and just in the land in those days judah shall be safe and jerusalem shall dwell secure this is what they shall call her the lord our justice the word of the lord [Music] to you o lord i lift my soul to you your ways o lord make known to me teach me your paths [Music] guide me in your truth and teach me for you are god my savior and for you i wait all the day [Music] soul [Music] good and upright is the lord thus he shows sinners the way he guides the humble to justice and teaches the humble his way to i lift my soul all the paths of the lord are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees the friendship of the lord is with those who fear him and his covenant for their instructions [Music] soul [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the thessalonians brothers and sisters may the lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all just as we have for you so as to strengthen your hearts to be blameless in holiness before our god and father at the coming of our lord jesus with all his holy ones amen finally brothers and sisters we earnestly ask and exhort you in the lord jesus that as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please god and as you are conducting yourselves you do so even more for you know what instructions we gave you through the lord jesus the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a show us lord your love and grant us your salvation [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples there will be signs in the sun the moon and the stars and on earth nations will be in dismay perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves people will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world for the powers of the heavens will be shaken and then they will see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory but when these signs begin to happen stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life and that day catch you by surprise like a trap for that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the son of man the gospel of the lord i once had a discussion with someone about the season of advent the person said well i like advent because it's a preparation for christmas and so those readings and the songs get me in the mood for the birth of the savior but that first sunday of advent is out of sync i don't know what happened but it's all about the end time the end of the world the end of our lives and i said and you don't like that and he said no i don't it's all a mystery anyway why do we need to talk about it it's all a mystery is that the way it is my mother often enough said to me if i die you're going to regret what you just said if i die i think we all say that if i die you can have this if i die we we speak about it as if it might not happen but it will so it's not a mystery we're going to die huh and we know what's going to happen we're going to meet jesus when we die that's the promise huh so it's really not a mystery we're going to die we're going to meet jesus the only missing piece is what are you going to say when you stand before him what's the script and i think the insight is in the second reading where paul writes to the christian community of thessalonica and he's asking them to increase in love that's the goal increase in love as we move through this life so imagine dying and getting before jesus and jesus said so and yes so and i lived a long life is that it he may say well yes i lived a long life no that isn't the goal the goal is to live a good life and saint paul says that means increasing in love so if that's the goal are you better at loving god and neighbor than you were last advent or five years ago are you really getting better at the core value of christian life which is love i think that's the script at the end of our lives when we stand before christ in judgment the topic is about love i was hungry did you feed me thirsty did you give me drink did you love me in other people enough to care for their needs were you compassionate were you forgiving did love abound in your life so that's what it's about yes and it's not a mystery and so in our lives we prepare for everything we prepare in case a busload of people comes for thanksgiving we've got enough turkey we prepare for all kinds of eventualities we make lists of things that we do to prepare and this one thing about preparing to meet jesus at the end of our lives we keep pushing away and sometimes saying well it's a mystery when it's not the season of advent begins the preparation for the coming of jesus by focusing on the second coming he came once at bethlehem he'll come again at the end of our lives and at the end of time and advent wants us to think about that it's not comfortable because it's challenging it's not easy because love isn't easy but that's the point are we really preparing for the coming of jesus at the end of our lives please stand together we profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen with faith and with confidence we come before the lord with our needs for pope francis and all shepherds of the church may they guide us in our preparation for the lord's return let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those throughout the world who work to bring peace to troubled areas may their efforts bear fruit let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us as we begin this season of advent may it be a time of renewal and blessing let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all who are ill that they may know god's healing presence and entrust themselves to god's loving care let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for the parish intention for this mass regis and marie grogan and for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer lord god we give you thanks for the gift of your son jesus christ help us to grow in our love each day as we make this prayer through christ our lord do now is the time to wake from sleep salvation is [Music] [Applause] [Music] come and bring us your peace [Music] come to us set us free come lord and bring us your peace cast off the the deeds of light turn to the source of the day lift up your voices and praise [Applause] come to us set us [Applause] [Music] and free us your peace [Music] let us pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god who is the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all this holy church oh lord accept these offerings we make gathered from among your gifts that they may that they may what you grant us to celebrate with devotion here below gain for us eternal redemption through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for he assumed at his first coming the lowliness of human flesh and so fulfilled the design you formed long ago and opened for us the way to salvation [Music] that when he comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest who watch for that day may inherit the great promise in which now we dare to hope and so with all the saints and angels we proclaim your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy [Music] heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] in the highest it is [Music] [Music] yes [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of face [Music] drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope david our bishop and all that clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] is [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] lamb of god you takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] lead us to your
