this evening from conjure Stadium Game six of the 1978 World Series the American League champions the New York Yankees versus the National League champions the Los Angeles Dodgers brought to you by Light beer everything you always wanted in a beer and less and by dodge and your Dodge dealer would invite you to come in and see why people are saved hey that's my dodge and my egg drop our closest with comfort its Gillette's best shave and play ball it is and they're streaming in here we're live from Dodger Stadium Game six it will be catfish hunter against Don sucker but the Dodger infield has been maligned here in Los Angeles and in New York Tony Kubek well he's got some feelings about that and I want to hear them and I know you do too Tony well Jeff your former infielder you take articles like I've been reading about the Dodger infield quite personally yes they have been maligned and I think unfairly you do not win a National League's Western Division a tough division with a poor defense you do not beat a solid team like the Phillies Philadelphia Phillies for the National League pennant with a lousy defense they've been in the World Series for two consecutive years you don't do that with a lousy defense sure they have played sloppily at times but not one of the games that was lost by the Dodgers in Yankee Stadium was due to their infield play in Game three it very simply was Guidry and a red-hot glove of Greg Nettles in Game four the controversial play Russell got the air but it was a perfect throw that would have ended the inning on a double play as Munson scarred Reggie Jackson's hip intentional or not was the thing that won that ballgame for the Yankees Game five it was very simple Jim Beattie wanted sure the Dodgers played sloppily again but also the Yankees had 18 hits and scored a lot of runs the Dodger infielders may have made the pitchers throw to a few more hitters but they didn't lose any ballgames they've been very unfairly treated Curt Gowdy however has more to say about some of the infield play in this world series by the Dodgers it all started in the first-inning a day Bill Russell would like to forget there's an error charge doing Genki runners are going on this pitch and Yeager can't handle it and the Yankees execute a double steal everything is going wrong for the Dodgers the Dodger manager Tom Lasorda put it very bluntly we played very very badly here's a throw from right fielder Reggie Smith sewing over the head of Yeager up against the backstop I better Drive to Russell ricochets off Russell out in the left-field Steve Garvey trying to handle this ground ball right under his glove rippling out in the right field and Johnny Oates trying to catch a knuckleball this feeling did not lose the game for the Dodgers but it certainly wasn't very pretty Steve Garvey came into the 1978 World Series with a remarkable RBI streak in the last 46 games leading to this series he drove in 44 runs but the Yankee pitchers have gone right after him and he has been relatively silent Curt Gowdy spoke to Steve Garvey just a short time before this ball game to get some of his observations it's news when Steve Garvey doesn't knock a run in in five games especially Steve after that blistering month of September you that have been you or the Yankee pitching Curt I hate to make news this way but it's been a combination of the Yankee stormy and good locations that mix the ball up well and then when I have hit the ball I've hit either at right at nettles or right at Piniella or straight away Center so again it's been a combination of their pitching and defense that's kept me from driving in runs I've been getting a couple hits but usually again nettles is knocked down two plays it could have driven an RBI so I don't feel very good about it but I know that I mean you go up there and keep swinging not again be cautious what about Hunter tonight anything you're going to change against him that the from the first time you batted against him well nothing at all occurred I think that again if you're just patient with catfish let him get the ball over the plate he's going to mix speeds on you so you don't want to go out and try to attack them and get your weight forward so I think the key again is letting the ball come to you and then hitting it where it's pitched that's Steve Garvey and right now let's go back upstairs Kirt I don't think there's any question that if the Dodgers are going to get going Steve Garvey is going to be a big factor in it the pitchers tonight well there's only nine active major league pitchers who have won 200 games or more and we've got two of them going here tonight for the Yankees Jim catfish hunter he's won 222 games in his major league career and for the Dodgers Don Sutton's won 205 games in his major league career if it does go to seven games tomorrow night pitchers are going to be Ron Guidry for the Yankees and that's a question mark how good is going to be and Tommy John for the Dodgers so there are the pitching matchups for tonight and if there is a seventh game you heard Tom Seaver talk about those two will be here for the 7th game but the big news is tonight so let's meet the players so let's go to John Ramsey the public address announcer Sullivan good evening and welcome to Dodger Stadium and the sixth game of the 1978 World Series here are the world champion New York Yankees non-starters coaches and trainers the New York area starting lineup for this evening's game batting first the centerfielder number 17 Mickey rivers batting second the left feeler number 6 Roy white batting third and catching the Yankee team captain number 15 Thurman Munson watch the reaction on the next felony introduced banning boarding the designated hitter number 44 Reggie Jackson that incoming the right fielder number 14 Lou Piniella planning six the third baseman number nine Greg Neto batting seventh the first baseman number 12 Jim Spencer batting eighth the second base number 25 Brian Doyle by day night the shortstop number 20 Bucky Dent warming up in the Yankee bullpen number 29 Jim catfish hunter and the manager for the Yankees Bob lemon and now ladies and gentlemen the National League champions your Los Angeles Dodgers non-starters coaches and fans Tamir the sacrifice number 15 baby Larry you see his wife Lynn Lynn Lopes the short story and Russell having her the first place would be number 6 Steve well third base number town any trick number 12 dusty the players but also for the the Centerville number 16 the catcher the designated middle number 33 that or we know the pitcher number 20 what she's thinking about question a new series to Jim you'll see the daggers on their sleeves his number ladies and gentlemen would you all please rise for a moment of silence in memory of Dodger great Jim Gilliam the whom this world series is dedicated and now to honor America our national anthem will be sung today by sir Rainey oh say does that Oh all the love Oh nBC will bring you the sixth game of the World Series following the ceremonial first pitch right after this message the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball and now let's go back to John Ramsey when he's jealous calling your attention to the Dodger on-deck circle we're all-time Dodger great Duke Snider will throw out the first ball to hit 11 home runs in World Series play the most by any is the only player in the history of the World Series the hit as many as four home runs in two World Series ladies and gentlemen Duke Snider Duke you played in six theories four times you're in the position the young Dodgers are in right now can they come back well I think with this reception Kurt they're back home the fans are behind them I think it's going to be a different ball game they were in awe of New York City and the Yankee Stadium and didn't play their kind of baseball but they're home and I know we felt the same way we got to Ebbets Field while we were a much tougher club dodgers all-time great centerfielder duke snider and out of Joe Garagiola okay Curt Duke Snider good to see the Duke er we seem during the season he is a broadcaster for the Montreal Expos that's great Tony I'm just going to use that left-handed baton that power in Yankee Stadium there's the Yankee batch of course they're loose they're ready to play here come the guys listen there's the defense for the Dodgers back home for Game six Steve Garvey at first base second base its Davey Lopes at the two good ballgames here games one and two there's the shortstop Bill Russell along with America league umpire bill Haller Ronnie Cey the Dodger third baseman to believe any infield would be happy to get back home to this infield Tom in left field it's Dusty Baker centerfielder Rick Monday out right field Reggie Smith who's bad shows some signs and he better hurry coming around there's a change the catcher Joel Ferguson and the pitcher Don Sun one of those deals where it might be the biggest ball game he's ever had to pitch but he's been in this situation many times before sardath this wants to shake up the lineup so he has taken Jaeger out of Ferguson making a heart punch that's exactly what he said to him he's given up some defense you get some possible offense and I think if you're keeping score with this the tip-off is just look at the Jackson is the th he's batting fourth and that belay on the th for the Dodgers is batting ninth that's got to tell you something if you never saw a game Don Sutton left to come up with a pretty well pitched ball game time well there's no question about it Joe that the Dodgers need it now that last game in New York was did not leave a good taste in their mouth that's for sure and coming home to this ballpark in front of their fans comfortable feel like they're playing in their own front yard is going to be a big boost of them but I think psychologically they've got to get through the first couple innings the first ground ball I've got to field it cleanly they've got a throw right get them off on the right foot here we go Mickey rivers and usually swings at the first pitch he's waiting he misses it strike one 14 times about six base hits stolen one base say is moved in closer third and it's going to be out of play and it's two quick strikes on Mickey rivers Mickey rivers who has six base hits they came in two ball games I am tight Sutton's last game he started Game three at the arc Friday night losing 5-1 to Guidry allowed five runs nine hits and six and one third innings walked three struck out to Joe Ferguson behind the plate bouncing ball and Lopes why there was the eraser and Garvey was the eraser tell you what two loads got surprised when he waited Mickey rivers ran better than he's run most of the time this series he forced the float show and it is not a short hop that is a tough hop that in between hop that garden just scoop down this is time to play in the first inning that can pick the club up even though they did get a bad play they got the good play at first base from Steve Garvey and they got the first out first step out of the cradle they should be in good shape well that goes a face hit dusty Becker cuts it off looked like a two base hit when he started so the Yankees have a base runner Roy white white hitting 359 8 421 it brings up Munson who has seven base hits 20 times in fact let's say 350f now let's see if 511 goes right off the basket put a good face still on first patient why white a good contact man up at the plate a control pitcher pretty much he may start the runner go hit-and-run Ferguson has a good arm there you see lemon not as strong as Yeager's but certainly I would say better than average maybe a little bit slow on his release but he's got a good arm Munson who can hit the ball to the right side they play him just straightaway he uses the whole ballpark maybe even some of the parking lot Munson leading the club in runs batted in with seven fact he's leading both teams Roy why deleted first one strike the count one out ball game just getting started there goes white bouncy ball Leslie fake it makes the play as he let the shortstop a little too soon by months not it's sharp enough now you see him go back to his original position but Munson does get the runner in scoring position so there are two away and it brings up Reggie Jackson as we look at Roy white at second base Jackson hitting 444 8th base hits 18 times at bat one home run six runs better than he's done anything everything you would ask him a ballplayer one thing a pitcher wants to do right here Joe and I'm sure it's on Don Sutton's mind is get his Clough off the field without giving up a run get them in that get them near the bat rack so they go out there first hacks and they don't have to come back from behind they want to be able to play even that first time when they get there at bat all do two balls and no strikes the Shrew would not throw Reggie Jackson will strike in first base open the right hand later up even though he's a good one Cannella got to go along with you Tony and I know if I were catching I would why'd make him wideness strike so he's going to hit he's gonna hit a bad ball he's not going to get a strike to hit let's see what happens curveball it's popped up and it's out of play that was a good curveball that kind of was a kid she called it drop it was an overhand curveball just rolled right down good pitch two balls one strike good indication of what the Yankees can look for off done Sutton to the ball the count was two balls and no strikes that's a hitter situation he's ahead of the pitcher many times in that situation to hit her or look for a fastball but look for that hard stuff Don Sutton was way behind to a now came with a curveball good pitcher could control something besides a fastball for my man hitter yes two strikes with two lights on at second base but it goes after rather jackson was after a bad pitch and you can really see it go down immediately when that ball left Sutton's hand he went to the back of his ballot later we'll sit there checking it right now is a real sinker I'll tell you that after that motion he went through SPAC I don't know what for maybe nothing at all Tony they were checking it as you were describing that and they threw the ball up so it may have been a scuff mark two balls two strikes two outs Jaxson one two five players who have hit safely in every game bouncing ball to Russell big Yankees nothing Dodgers coming aback Dodger Stadium Chavez Ravine here in Los Angeles game number six of the World Series here's the defensive alignment for the Yankees Jim Spencer's at first base it's Brian Doyle once again at second Doyle and Stanley have done a good job out there defensively Bucky Dent's the shortstop at third base Greg Nettles in left field right he's been steady Lou Pinella the catcher Thurman Munson joined the cated he's leading the series in RBIs in seventh he's swinging the bat well the last few games and the pitcher for the Yankees Jim catfish hunter he wants to get a louver and go hunting brother supposedly got his six-point buck and so he said he wants to join it have that incentive so Kathy says he has it but he facing Davy Lopes was in him 273 with six base hits 22 times it back the first game catfish doesn't waste any time he gets the ball and throws outside last Wednesday losing 43 to Hooton allowing four runs seven hits in six innings I really couldn't telephone I think it they got upstairs which I could sink he fastball he got off his mistake was that he got the to a no catfish of course gave up 16 home runs this year it gives up a lot of home Russell gets enough is a home run fight getting to the front how much forward momentum means he's come in with it and look what happens the Dodgers turn around Reggie Smith Russell now 11 hits in 24 times it back behind the plate months coming back Smith 18 to 38 twenty-one times at five base hits one home run there are five players here's why white in fact as far as he caught with a hand on the fence to gauge where he is going and get on the left almost hit to left field camera dinner did any money on Hale terrain NBC cameras will be every baseball's Reggie Smith is out on strikes Steve Garvey and he's got a hit he's got used to win only Garvey has five face just back drove in 113 runs during the season bird in the lead one man out on at first base Bill Russell Dodgers lead one-nothing by Lopes that's high I've heard you talk anytime you throughout this world series and I know you went by the same thing pitching because he told us that there's one man leechline if you'd like to pitch around with you could the Yankees have not pitched around and the pitchers have gone right after him they've walked in this one time they made excellent pitches on Hairston we've been really aggressive against him Tony you're exactly right and he's not swinging well I looked in Yankee Stadium as after he was trying to pull most of the pitches and when Steve Garvey does that he's not a very effective hitter he's an effective hitter when he uses the right centerfield alley the left centerfield alley and pulls the high breaking ball the mistakes that a pitcher will make that goes the runner gives a John Munson it's a submariner he really suddenly not wants to release this is something to marvel at is not something you really want to practice he does everything wrong except get the man loses his balance throws it underhand gets the ball earn time and that's all it counts they don't pay you for looking good while you can throw it as hard as you want but if you wind up to throw it it still does not get there very quickly he did not throw it very hard but he got rid of it quickly and accurately if got there as quick as a heart or as amazing I threw that ball submarine like like Eldon ocker used to do it you remember a submariner Eldon ocker remember him on this day mr. P with the st. Louis Browns we used to watch him as kids here's a pitch to Garvey - bouncing ball profile you can see on that pitch Joe that's a slider down away with a count 2 and 2 and Steve's going out trying to pull that ball and that's just it's just not the way to Steve Garvey normally hits that's not the Garvey that ends up getting 200 hits in a season he just doesn't normally hit that way you see these pressing I don't know if he's pressing or exactly if he's uncomfortable we don't know what's wrong with him but he certainly does not look like the Steve Garvey that we normally see in the National League he looks like he's feeling for the ball like he's not sure of himself they haven't given him very many strikes that last pitch is up and in out of the strikes in the one before was and he's out on strikes that ends any run a home run by Lopes at the end of one inning Yankees nothing Dodgers one that's going to be a good one Danny red Lopez in red Lopez fell Clemente sports world special edition you're looking at Los Angeles ballpark creepy all over this ballpark we got a couple of them roaming Lou Piniella leads it off five players have it safely in every game Jackson Piniella white Russell Smith her father was a few read on it outside front Beauty if you're pitching or catching nasty if you're hitting one ball and one strike the count on Piniella Piniella six base hits 21 times at bat hitting 286 big base it off Wells to win the game throws his bat backhanded by saying oh they got him but he's still standing there putting up blame I wanna say look how far he goes right to the line does not panic with long fairly active throw good stretch it was just a bang bang play bang bang call for ED Vargo got him by a half a step there you see it Ranse they are upset who Dodger defense I'll tell you that from all we talked about earlier they've taken some cheap shot really upset the good call Jill he's looking right in there Piniella he can add the kool-aid Reggie Jackson kind of cool I think something is done a very good job here in the first inning especially he got out of the inning without giving up a run which is a big lift to the Dodgers and of course Davey Lopes home run there's another shot of that play at first and one thing already we've got four outs by the Dodgers all of them in the infield Davey Lopes has made two outs to assist the O'Russell has an assist Ron Cey has an assist on a very good plays you look at Piniella again I think after the game if they had Sunday in New York coming back here to their own Dodger Stadium to get rid of the question Marcus through the first couple innings and make a couple of good plays in the infield which they've done already nettles with a count of one ball one strike one out as we look at Jim Spencer in the on-deck circle nettles is hitting 143 he has three base hits one ball and two strikes the count one out nobody on Dodgers are leading one to nothing with a second time I think the best thing to take the pressure off any infielder is get a run on the board to hurry you can get a lead that relieves a lot of tension and pressure for any infielder profile look I think it's a funny thing about pressure to in the World Series it's the outside activity that really keeps building it up reading the papers listening to the telecast whatever they came out to the ballpark someone was snoring one ball two strikes one out nettles there's a face in in the right-center field Reggie Smith coming over so is Monday it's Monday all cuts it off so nettles has a base hit we won out of it was up Spencer fresh baseman will pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network joke Arizona with Tony Kubek Curt Gowdy and Tom Seaver here at Dodger Stadium Game six one to nothing Dodgers lead home run by Davey Lopes the leadoff man for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first we are in the second inning with one out and one on Spencer who has replaced shambo's in the lineup is hitting at 222 he has two home runs two hits nine times at bat no home runs two for nine two balls no strikes powerful hitters Spencer likes to pull the ball a couple good days right there a lot the two Oh whoops backs are nettles is on it first-base nettles during the season only stole one base that's three balls no strikes Spencer takes a look at the third-base coach he wants to hit the triple three and on Saten twice now is gone too and on a Jack sneak through breaking ball a Spencer - and oh he just turned the ball over looked like a little screwball town as a fastball with his breaking ball Tony gonna breaking ball a lot Greg nettles hit was on on the curveball with a lot of curveballs to Jackson watch the runner one man spencer does the walk that's the first first walk given up by Don Sutton and it brings up oil Brian Doyle over 20 pairs lasorda dial for 412 333 as you watch Sutton pitch you may see him rub down above the belt rub down below the belt what he's doing is either adding or subtracting to the signal already given to him by his catcher and yeah that worked out strike one breaking ball panels is its second Spencer is at first one man out foul ball strike two home run by Davey Lopes given the dodges of one another Green Yankee baserunners nettles at second Spencer's at first Brian Doyle a hitter one day against the Dodgers and here he gets a hanging curveball what is it all the way our Valley but Dusty Baker ran it down he would expect a little guy like that to be able to hit the ball over your head but it was a real bad pitch that Sutton threw a high curveball drives in a run sand that minute second third still in scoring position there's Jim Spencer going around third and third-base coach Dick Howser holding them up getting him back to third well you saw a lot of great action there you saw John Kibler the umpire said himself he's a third-base this is Bucky Dent inches struck second base is steady defense make the DoublePlay make the plays they've got Doyle's got five base hits that's a plus the outside one ball one strike scores tied one apiece this guy is an excellent butter right here with one out and Spencer on base he led the American League and sacrifices two years that are all dead so look out you never know what they're going to try the middle it's a base hit and now the ball gets by first way better charge of hair the catcher because consider theater Monday we'll see it coming right action here's the head up the mental switch to the heart and fail here Jabez ravine monday so under this car now is going on is not a good show Garvey decoyed throws the runner going around that was dead and then when the ball went from Ferguson's Lake that got my position also so charged an air to Ferguson you know those Dodger players now Lopes is kind of going to talk to Sutton I'm sure to just as we look at mussoorie to reassure sup that hey this is not going to be another game like we had at Yankee Stadium but then you have to wonder there as you can see Spencer is just guard saying stay up stay up no chance for a play to dial right there the ball handcuffs Ferguson first pitch it's pulling on the first base line guard me a foul ball ground ball and Lopes in time rivers is our Bucky Dent moves on over to third Roy white Roy white is a better white Singler left his first time up this game of baseball you can get up so high and down so low so fast Denson third two outs Roy white vol 1 it's one of the problems about this game psychological shows that if you get too high and you do come down you can really come down with a thud never get yourself back up again many ballplayers just try to stay on an even keel and just ride through never really get too high or too low we playing 162 games during a regular season that's really the only way that you can approach it it's the only way to approach it but it's such a difficult road of town it's terrible I mean it's an impossible road to do but that you try to do emotionally that's what you try to do it's impossible but they do you're the best you can Yankees have travel an impossible road almost the entire season the second half anyway here's the 1 1 pitch to white it is a strike one ball strike for two hours that Dodger bench about the base hit that Doyle got that's the big base hit and once again the base on balls has come home to Haunted Dodgers all started with a hit by nettles a walk to Spencer a double at Doyle a single by dent there and his three to one Yankees left-field Dusty Baker should make the play we go into the bottom half from the second inning New York Yankees three Los Angeles Dodgers one of you from Dodger Stadium I don't know where camera is he's way up there relied our NBC cameras getting all over this place telling you high atop a hill in centerfield Tony we talked about the moods of these two different ball club you would think that the Dodgers have to go and really stick a lot of splinters in that Yankee bat rack I mean overpower if something hasn't really touched a big game we haven't gotten a win since September 15 he's been struggling he said he's on the verge of a great picture he's been a great pitcher for the Dodgers for many years but I've got to believe you get a heart rolling or as you said you know maybe it's a Wells fortuity to just shut the Yankees off right now don't they can come back as a run that's topic here is Ron say I tell you you can't hit these Yankees off at the pass you're gonna have to get them before they leave the fort not when they got one game to wrap it all up that's today three-two-one Yankees lead curveball misses Ron say say hitting 294 five base hits 17 times at bat he has one home run that was a big three-run homer hit it off catfish outside a lot of bugs flying around the candy casino industry Oh room looks like yeah in that area Tom well he's one of our segments I came before the the game a thing that he didn't want you see a shot of say in the high fly ball nettles the third bench to get crepe relax will you cheer downgrade my Oh nobody great Roy white left feel he must be about two six eight ten feet from the wall one thing the Clyde King wanted to see catfish do was to establish his slider down in a way keep the ball down in the strike zone catfish got the American League record for most home runs Allowed lifetime 359 that is one of his problem is the home run ball fouled out of play ball one strike this is my men Slyder that the pitching coach in his ball club but the pitch stack and Fowler was saying the pits that hunter is really lost does not have the velocity like it once did is the slide he still has a change of speeds the curveball he changed up well he cannot throw that slider hard enough after the Eric Brown ran ball of death you get Dusty Baker I'd say in deference to our good friend Allan Roth in the end and get upset win and save some statistics I think you're ridiculous like home runs allowed by a pitcher and it depends on the innings pitched and when they're giving up there's so many factors the ballpark comes into play how many men on when they're hit as the most important to tell you Robin Robert used to give them up didn't they all did he ever give you that a nice comfortable collar we always talked about two two outs and nobody on here is Rick Monday first pitch ground ball Doyle Hanson catfish has an easy inning three up three down for the Dodgers we complete two innings of baseball here and as the New York Yankees be the Dodgers one coming to bat for the Yankees it'll be Thurman Munson to lead it off followed by Reggie Jackson and then Lou Piniella well here it's the Hollywood connection they call it you're looking the man drinking the coke I guess whatever it is he's Jerry Weintraub one of the big impresarios here he is sitting in Frank Sinatra's box see Frank who is in New York I'm sure if it gets a chance watching it he's an honorary coach for Lasorda Jilly Rizzo Don Rickles tell you it's like one watch Hollywood Squares you come at the ballpark here they're all here ball one to Thurman Munson Munson bounced out to the shortstop his first time up it's his strike one on the outside corner is I hesitated I thought it was outside here's the 1 1 pitch curveball tap file he looks like he's got a good breaking ball time he over him purple got a very good breaking ball the bad one he threw was Brian Doyle Doyle he's getting over for Streisand just hunting it right up in his eyes that's the that's the problem with throwing a lot of breaking balls is getting the ball up here's a pitch to Thurman Munson Sutton of course throws off a stiff front leg he does get his arm through though a very good breaking ball just won't make won't get it up there where it looks like a balloon you can rule it the hitters a hacker here's e 1 2 pitch foul tip at high curveball you can pick up the spin so soon in that batter's box and you can see it's oh boy if there's ever a you would call room service for that little anything I see hitters eyes they start to look like pool balls why let's go back and see all the white come out of their eyeball it's like a Christmas card they said you say thank you very much here's a 1 2 pitch it's fouled out of play I tell you I've been behind the plate you heard catchers do it to that before the guy even hits the ball you go no no and then hit it inky's three dodges one-third any months and is out on strikes that's the first bite down suck another phone again and it's a dandy right can't hit that wood with this camera action here you see Munson reacting to it I'm sure he's asking the umpire if that ball was his strike he just wants it here what he said he's not arguing at all suddenly the girls his hand around that ball time really gets his hand on top of him it gets all the four seams working in his favor trying to get that curveball that dick right now he wants it to go straight thing that was a fastball to Jackson miss ball one we're watching from this shot as he curls his hand around and when he does add you know it's a curveball there was I still think the thing something's going to happen he's the Yankees our such good hitters he's going to have to start getting some hitters out with his fastball or they're gonna lay for that curveball Reggie Jackson just won that one looked like a slider but he's going to have to throw some fast balls and get some hitters out Tony yeah you see Reggie's feet as he's digging in at home plate when nettles got his base hit it was one ball two strikes he's a you know something was ahead of him and nettles is a fastball hitter he hit that curveball like he knew was coming like he's sitting on the curveball yeah no he's got two strikes on his outside turned it over two balls in one strike it's not a big screwball when he turns it over but it's enough to if you try to hit it you just not going to get it it's in a good spot two balls one strike one out nobody on three one Yankees lead we're in the third oh yeah he's thrown a lot of curveballs tonight there's another one going straight down it's not easy pitch to hit it's easy if you get it up in the strike zone keep it down it's tough here's a 2 2 pitch it brings up Lou Pinella Piniella bounced out his first time up Dodger fans whooping it up they want to see baseball tomorrow and if there is a game seven will be right here and we'll be looking for you two outs nobody on my sister that's out of play strike two down to a one to nothing lead as Davey Lopes open the bottom ham the first of the home run but the Yankees in the second single by nettles a walk dispenser a double by Doyle over the leftfielder Baker's head a single by dent and that's how we stand Yankees three runs four hits and no errors Dodgers one run two hits and one error Sutton against hunter didn't mean to swing easy ground ball regard it's New York three Los Angeles one and due up for the Dodgers it'll be joe ferguson vic devily on the designated hitter and Davey Lopes Joe Ferguson a big guys 6 to 215 pounds 32 years old he began his career in a Dodger organization in 1968 and went to st. Louis and Houston and back to Los Angeles early this year it's a strike bah bah majority attorney was talking about catfish in his sore arm and he's had some shoulder trouble the reason being that his temper stitches across his body is that leg comes down and he actually places it on the other side of his would never son is right are spotted on a spring your shoulder all one Ferguson came from Houston for two players to be named later the players turned out to be Landis toy and Jeff Leonard youngster who led the Pacific Coast League in hitting the Liberto his scout for the Dodgers hit into losing two balls and two strikes right centerfield well hit the wall drop stop ii Camilla he hit that wall Pinella extended himself as far he could go after an excellent job he tried to backhand the ball in the glove and that s not the copped out before e at the wall action is something we did not see initially he ran headlong right into the wall in right-center field I'll tell he made one heck of a try as in satchel but here's what happened he played a strange ballpark jokbal car he would know at the side of his face the left side right into the fence Tony on the replay you can see it from just watch it look like he had the ball this close and it didn't show beside of his blood he tried to back that warning track right there by doing that they're looking for the wall the wall sided golfers split second well our director Harry Coyle who will end up probably in a wax museum somewhere for his great cover he'll be come to see the guy who gets these shots with our great camera crews so Harry once again great replays congratulation to all of you Galileo beautiful fun it's going to be a race then pet fish underway and he was bunting for the face here but what happened the third kind of athlete the catfisher is right here Connie all the things that a good pitcher sed Tony there's no person about it he was going that way off still runs well an elderly man both first baseman Jim Spencer here is Davey Lopes with a home run in that first inning to give the Dodgers a 1 to nothing lead erased by the Yankees 3 runs in the 2nd Ferguson is on the third base one man out here's the pitch it's popped up five Tom you talked about devil a of the elderly man the current press guide Liz's birthday is July 31st 1939 which would make him 39 years old but older reference books lists his birthday is 1936 which would make him 42 so like satchel page he's all in nine but under 70 de Vries have got the bunt down ball one strike this is what they have not been able to do driving that run from third base with less than two outs Ferguson betting this time we love cookie the first picked a for this dr. Bob club here in the 1970s you started up the second out of the eye up out of the strike zone Lopes as we look at the Dodger bench he would like to steal a base here so I rustling at first inning but davey lopes again in the game messages look would like to deliver a message that you can't get me if i look specs that he might even out close Phil how is the man hurry up it goes whoops out in the distant times Oh Lopes once again give us a great shot here comes number four watch Lopes he's going straight for the bag nothing fancy his foot was on the bag and right in the back of his heel each replay tell us something the first one tell us it was a straight steal he never one strike then he put headed for second phase they're going to try to take this game away from the Yankees any way they can and Lopes is the leader got a good lead off second Joe picking off the cutters lead three two two Yankees are leading one man out wrestle watch here's the man it touched it was not carbon here his left-handed bat mistreated especially and Yankees Lopes is on its second Russell is on there they're deep for Reggie Smith dial for the first double play so the big DoublePlay and toil makes a good play on his ball Tony it was one super double play on both ends Doyle and now look at dent under pressure gets the trove Smith runs well Russell really took him into a tunnel great double play that he did that ended the inning so at the end of three complete innings Yankees three Dodgers two and we got a dandy go on after these messages from your local station here you get another look at the double play that ended the Dodgers third inning if that ball goes through the Dodgers end up with runners on first and third and Steve Garvey oh that's the pitchers best friend right there especially against a tough hitter like Reggie Smith also Tom if dent doesn't turn the double play its first and third two outs and Garvey is up so anyway look at it both guys made a super play nettles hits the first pitch foul into the stands you know we were talking about most valuable players in this series and that little Brian Doyle who was supposed to be a blowout patch because Willie Randolph is out with an injury pulled hamstring Doyle he drove in the big run at second with a double made this play he and Stanley have done a tremendous job filling in for Randolph that was just a super double play under a lot of pressure nettles single to right in the second even scored he scored on Doyle's double outside one ball one strike three runs four hits no errors for the Yankees two runs four hits and one error for the Dodgers we are in the fourth game six Yankees leading three to two in games three to two and runs in this game left centerfield going back as Monday has one brings up Jim Spencer Spencer walked and scored in his second inning he scored a base hit by Bucky Dent good crowd on hand looks like a jam ballpark to me they're here to root their Dodgers home strike his call 3.3 the Dodgers play during the regular season that's a lot of anything people jellybeans whatever fouls it back to stripes you know since they've come out here Joey there's only four times that the Dodgers have played under 500 ball they came out with 1958 that was the first year they came out here only four times four years since then that they've had teams that have played less than 500 baseball tribute to the organization strike his balls Spencer is out on strike such a Tony talked about it ignore that Sutton is going to have to try to get some people out with his fastball but he did it right here he set up that pitch with some good breaking balls before I think Spencer was looking for the pitch out over the plate a good fastball right on that inside corner here's Brian Doyle Doyle doubled in the second inning a big base hit for the Yankees takes it outside ball one is look to you guys if the Baker's moved back a little bit looks the same we I think move back couple steps another face said Barney's 2 for 2 tonight saya give that ball right back up the middle hit it hard one of the things if your picture that you have to be aware of is that shot that comes right back out you'll see it right here boom it gloves on your hand for motor protection as the wall I was trying to get somebody out something thought he might have had that ball first looked like he had a shot at there's Doyle Bucky Dent moves one into centerfield it's going to drop Doyle stops at second place so once again the 8th Blaz hitters are on base with base hits these two is last three years been on base five times so far this ballgame so dial is on its second den is on it first we have two men out Yankees leading by a run committed to a z-score we're in the fourth and knowledge Mickey Rivers who has bounced out twice to the second baseman as we look at patty Sutton rivers takes it inside for ball one was to hit as the bomber lineup Tony Sunday and today are just amazing that's what they get paid for hit new feeling no feeling in him that's right when Sunday had three base hits and scored two runs fouls it back one ball one strike while I look at the baseball let me tell you this telecast presented by authority of Major League Baseball is intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience and any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is prohibited on ball one strike two outs two on Yankees three Dodgers two we're in the fourth who is he Sutton subtracting from the signals left fear the score the Yankees coming to bat for the Dodgers in a fourth inning it'll be Steve Garvey Ron Cey and Dusty Baker bottom half of the fourth inning this is patty Sutton and last one look up for fly ball and then reaction whoo-hoo my man got him I tell you lovely ladies come back black Barbie Garvey's having one of those kinds of series where the fast falls even though they're not real tough fast balls he's a little bit lay down the off-speed pitches a little bit in front he's just I don't know if it's more metal or more physical but he's in one of those Twilight Souls that he just can't seem to get in the groove but he does get his pitch he fouls it off and it's gone slumping well I don't know if there's that many times at bat Tony as he fouls this one off for Garvey coming into today's game was 5 for 20 with no home runs no runs batted in so he is 5 for 21 and scindia's wife looking on he's got a hit for them to go and for him not the hit it's going to just slow down the big machine because he's right in the middle of it he's the fourth-place hitter he's got a tattoo the ball takes the pitch outside ball 1 that's what he's going to have to do lay off bad pitches I think he's been swinging an awful lot he did off Beatty in New York he has off several other pitchers he changed a bad call and you get anxious in there and it gets psychological you know it's campanella's great description and a slough begins in your bat it goes in your head it ends up in your stomach you start to reach for the bad ball and I've always felt that the slump if he didn't wanted like a common cold is there for two weeks I don't care what you do and this is the way you started I inside to to catch fish so they call that curveball out the timing comes in science Eve with Jason cut fish used both sides of the fight that's what every good pitcher does is the outside and the inside corners going back inside three balls two strikes now and guard that's good direction that guy Thurman Munson Korean to touch here fouled out of play Garvey's either have a good cut at that one last fall a little bit late again a little bit behind it Tony you talking about hitters being uncomfortable okay the big thing is that when you're uncomfortable when you get your pitch that you can hit as a little too dry you miss it you foul it off back here and back in the seats just like you do right at Greg nettles hit the ball ran hard but nettles has shown he can play you can see the cyber leaf devil spot right there that came very close to go right through his leg because the ball got out of in a hurry on this fast infield we just got the tailgate down in time he really battles it that tough and again almost right at him consider caught it right in the tip of his glove in the webbing the great cedar like metal side and relief after he did catch a heart shot brings up Ron Cey who flied deep to left his first time up makes it high ball one one out nobody on three two Yankees lead the Dodgers you can see Thurman on that one he firstly put his hand down low and then he put his hand up high sending two messages out to catfish and down low that one Thurmond is saying I want the pitch down in the strike zone and when he puts his hand up overhead like this is make sure you get your arm up on top your shoulder get up release the ball on top of the ball high pop fly Bucky been drifting a short left field two outs catfish hunter has become one of the highest-paid players in all of baseball by doing just what he did make a lot of hitters have foot swings just missed throw their back and say nuts I'll get them next time the next time you might do the same thing to you Munson's going out to talk to catfish hunter and Munson knows his pictures so well that one game this season catfish was telling me that his arm didn't feel exactly right he threw the ball Munson went out this you're not throwing the ball if you're not throwing you're going to get out of here and he had like a seven run lead and took him out before you get complete the victory out of it he knows his pitcher hot smash way and I don't believe it Tony well you're going to see a replay of it and you still might not believe it then those four or five steps to his lab extends himself all the ways far he could somehow regains his balance only position the inferior you've got to make a lot of off-balance throw that shortstop he did fantastic play by Bucky Jeff Nancy inning at the end of four complete innings Yankees 3 Dodgers 2 the preceding message was furnished by Major League Baseball vows nettles in Game three today it's been Doyle and the dent show then retired the side cut that ball was almost on the outfield grass it was passed by white Thurman Munson Reggie Jackson faced Sutton eggy's lead through the two over the Dodgers we're the top of the fifth we can see how Roy white has gotten on bass been in the middle of a lot of these Yankee rallies leading the World Series a run scored with a one strike to white he is single is fly the left say was charging but it goes fine two strikes I love that Kim Rangel we just had a moment ago because Roy white really his eyes are darting all over the place it's checking his hands he looks at his knuckles he looks at his feet there's a replay of it as he shortens up to try to beat out the base hit he's also looking at the third baseman and then when he sets his eyes on that pitcher he just doesn't move but he is a very active batter I didn't look at Ron Cey at third with two strikes he's moved back white grew up on a team kids where they used to imitate the Musial's the Williams and most of them were switching it just horsing around and it was done for it kevrah okay turn face one out bring up months round it out and struck out to have a good curveball Tony by Don Sutton he's using a lot tonight become his effective pitch for the E beat and I think he's made up his mind that the Yankees are going to see a lot of it you can see Sutton immediately asking for a feel he knew was it was a strike Thurman Munson fitting all the players in the World Series in RBIs it's this one foul out of play you know the two guys we got pitching tonight Jim hunter and Don Sutton drank three and four among active pitchers in the major leagues today with the number of starts a number of major league starts Hunter's got 457 Sutton has 454 it's a la the phone Val Sutton ranks while up high and wholesome Dodger pitching records two strikes son was the starter game two at Los Angeles last Wednesday lost four to three check them two strikes on Munson one and two Game three in New York Friday night lost five to one to Guidry that was the Greg Nettles show was it what out create a two ball game the Yankees leading worthless death hit hard like here you see a shot electron camera down the 1e fires across the Garvey Thurman is that easily another fine play by Ron Cey at third base Dodgers expressed some ill feelings about the field in Yankee Stadium and they looked like they're a lot more comfortable coming home playing on their own red infield Randy Jackson with two outs he's grounded out and he struck out right on the back Sutton looks a lot sharper now than he did in the first inning or two he's got a little more to the fastball he's been around the corners like hunter you show you a lot of different pitches and one appearance at the plate you might not see the same pitch twice give you the little straight changeup the little screwball sinker ball curveball hard slider will changeup on the curveball one strike to Reggie Jackson one and one big crowd once again here in Dodger Stadium close to 56,000 see their dodges right now training by one run two out right bong-sun food 1 & 2 you can bet me he was looking for something even with two strikes I got to believe Reggie was looking for an off-speed pitch nobody's got that kind of last time up Reggie struck out on a 2 and 2 screwball that Sutton faded away from now there's a lot of psychological stuff going on here too maybe a new character for Don Sutton but there's a lot of shakes a lot of nose a little communication stuff going on between and sup is much better than a lot of guys curveball it's hard it breaks a lot the slider they used to talk about that one that breaks maybe six inch it is very hard to balls two strikes two outs Reggie Jackson facing Don Sutton the top of the fifth Yankees lead treated two there goes that shakily Ferguson was not even getting a sign at that time and Sutton shaking him off just to try he brought Joe Ferguson well a man sitting there with his lovely wife Dick Clark a reminder to you Kerry Clark and Clark so normally seen on Wednesday we'll have a special show this week Thursday at 8:00 p.m. 7:00 Central time still looks like he's about 20 years old doesn't he remember when Tom Seaver used to dance to his music orally but he tried it not very well that's exactly right Rick Monday joe ferguson vic that leo he's lead over the Dodgers 3-2 to 1978 World Series were in game number six the Dodgers have to win the day or there will be no seventh ballgame Mondays grounded out catfish hunter but a one-run lead one bar incident to see the first ballgame Tom Seaver talked about the therapy underwent he's hypnotized and they book the adhesions in that shoulder file up one and why I also finally found a little flaw in his delivery watching some home movies over the winter time it changed his delivery because of that sore shoulder he has pitched a lot of innings and his baseball career one ball one strike yeah Tommy 9 or 10 years seemed like he was averaging almost for almost 300 innings a year with a da some of those innings are awfully toxic so Ferguson on that campus said when the D H came in that he thought it would take some years off the end of his career because those endings you pitch with the d8 slate LeBlanc and he gets Monday and you got to throw the hard breaking ball to a tough hitter a little more Street on the shoulder and elbow Joe Ferguson who double quarter davey lopes a home run leading off the ballgame for the Dodgers yeah he scored all three of theirs in the second metal single Spencer walk Doyle mm feel dead singer foul out of play one strike so I got to believe the catfish honor we've seen a man off the line over the last years has got to be a pleasure to catch oh you got to love working with a guy like this and the reason I say that because he's got his good stuff you know it's going to be easy game because he knows where he wants to throw it and he never wastes a pitch every pitch works for him it may be a ball but he's setting up the next one and that's the pleasure of catching two strike pitch to Ferguson he didn't waste one hunter Ferguson drilled at the centerfield Mickey rivers began the lip as he came in for the ball but he made a nice catch and short centerfield to our another thing about it announced any pitcher like catfish hunter is that the guys that played behind him not only the catcher but the shortstop and the center field learned everybody that faced behind him cat doesn't fool around the Marigny get to say gets up there and he gets ready knee pitches and he doesn't pitch behind he doesn't go to three balls and no strikes he doesn't go to three and one he's not three and two and everybody he gets the ball he gets ahead of his hitters and he makes them swing the bat and that makes for a lot better play behind the pitcher guys behind him they could make you them make the great plays for the outstanding pitchers that will pitch quickly and stay ahead of their hitters no doubt about it two outs one ball no strikes on vic davalillo the designated hitter batting the number 9 follow that right leg kick can you recall an off the top of your head what's the least amount of pictures you ever threw in a canoe fall game Oh probably about 95 maybe this guy threw a ball game a couple of years ago where he threw something like 79 or 80 pitches so you can imagine what happens with an in theaters filed off target one strike that is remarkable you some of the guys you think of maybe a Nolan Ryan still 200 pixels 250 pitches whatever it is they strike out a lot but John your toes as an infielder up and down back on your heels this guy throws 80 you can be up I think is uh there's catfish Hunter's wife in 12 years I think I've probably been under in a complete game been under 100 pitches three times maybe two balls two strikes two outs over the last two the fifth the Yankees lead 3-2 to game number six the 1978 World Series once it away he got it away fouled off they talked about pitchers who have good control they just throw strikes but there's the pitcher like hunter has good control within the strike zone right now we're going to pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network little chopper that nettles makes a nice play out and retire the fleet footed davalillo so if I just go down to the last of the fifth the score as we go to the sixth Yankees 3 the Dodgers 2 due up six for the egg is Piniella Greg nettles and Jim Spencer earlier we showed you patty Sutton Don Sutton's wife reacting this is Helen hunter catfishes wife watch this reaction oh right she says Oh ride they celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary yesterday so this is a happy time for catfish and his lovely wife knowing how about this is anything nothing is sacred Santa Claus in Dodger blue yet do you like that in a sec for the Yankees Lou Piniella Greg nettles Jim Spencer Curt Goudy Joe gars yellow Tom Seaver Tony Kubek here Dodger Stadium for game number six Sutton had a couple laughs with the American league umpire Joe Brinkman when I last frequent to go out and have a look at the ball three to two of the Yankees lead over the Dodgers in the sixth he has always been a good hitter as that stat shows you let the Yankees in batting average the last two years Piniella get out look like you're still laughing he broke up he sure did something must have said something to him sonic cars has been accused of doctoring a baseball thrown out of the ballgame by Doug Harvey he has bandaids and his fingers of time with messages in them to umpires and they make him remove the band-aid years ago they used to be able to strip pictures to see if there was any foreign substance but not anymore Gaylord Perry they almost made they made him strip in the dugout still couldn't find it the guy that Sutton really runs up a wall as your manager Tom Sparky hello he has he talking to himself answering himself and everything hey you see how successful Sutton has been this year dr. stadium what he's done on the road so he's happy to be in this ballpark first we've got two pitchers ballparks in the World Series this year you not just found that out in Yankee Stadium especially the right-handed hitters one ball two strikes on Piniella Lou Pinella Tampa mrs. Piniella I know again or Perry said about foreign substance on the ball I've talked about spitballs and scuffed balls being psychological he says throw it to the opposing managers favorite player Sparky Anderson saved the balls over a few year period every time Sutton pitched had a special bag we kept them in and saw that almost every ball or he said was scuffed right over the National League president Chuck Feeney's name and he had him under lock and key and he was going to present his case and think he ever had an attorney to do it for him but it sounded like he had a pretty strong one one ball two strikes no outs Sutton pitching a Piniella turn to Tom Lasorda 28 years in the Dodger organization Bob lemon he was fired at Chicago fired a few years back at Kansas City hired his Billy Martin's pitching coach 10 years back then when Billy Martin left resigned Bob lemon Billy Martin's girlfriend took the team over to balls two strikes Joe Ferguson catching today as Yeager you've not been too affected with the bat we sat down was sort of trying to shake the lineup up breaking ball Piniella jumps all over for a lion I'm a sit in front of Dusty Baker so nobody out the Yankees have the leadoff hitter onto the six bring up Greg Nettles there you see mrs. Piniella pretty happy about our man's face hit Piniella at first you can see the dirt on his back that was from the collision he had with the right centerfield wall on a double out there that he had his glove momentarily big hole for nettles to shoot to a pull at her with Garvey holding Pennell he had a good cut but fouled off a fastball you know we talked about Steve Garvey earlier not having a very good series of the bat Greg nettles has not been hitting for the Yankees he said he just doesn't you know again our Perry said about foreign substance on the ball I've talked about spitballs and scuffed balls being psychological he says throw it to the opposing managers favorite player haha Sparky Anderson saved the balls over a few year period every time Sutton pitched had a special bag we kept them in saw that almost every ball or he said was scuffed right over the National League president Chuck Feeney's name and he had them under lock and key and he was going to present his case and think he ever had an attorney to do it for him but sounded like he had a pretty strong one one ball two strikes no outs Sutton pitching to Piniella don't to Tom Lasorda 28 years in the Dodger organization Bob lemon who was fired at Chicago fired a few years back at Kansas City hired his Billy Martin's pitching coach after years back and then when Billy Martin left resigned Bob lemon Billy marks good friend took the team over to balls two strikes Joe Ferguson catching today as Yeager we've not been too effective with the bat we sat down was sort of trying to shake the lineup up breaking ball mallet jumps all over for a line drive base sentence on a dusty Baker so nobody out the Yankees have the leadoff hitter onto the six bring up Greg Nettles there you see mrs. Piniella pretty happy about our vans base hit Piniella at first you can see the dirt on his back that was from the collision he had with the right centerfield wall on the double out there that he had his glove momentarily big hole for nettles to shoot to a pull at her with Garvey holding Pennell he had a good cut but fouled off a fastball you know we talked about Steve Garvey earlier not having a very good series of the bat Greg nettles has not been hitting for the Yankees so he just doesn't feel comfortable we talked about feeling comfortable he says he missing his pitch he's fouling his pitch off and he doesn't feel like he's trying to pull the ball too much it's a funny thing I that's a feeling I think that professional athlete will get I don't feel right getting to explain it going after a bat pit one strike pitch he too high in the air Reggie Smith should have an easy play one out the six going after pitches like that will give you comfortable feeling that's for sure well and if the Dodgers win tonight there's Piniella at first Game seven we played tomorrow night right here in Dodger Stadium 8 p.m. Eastern Time and we know you'll join us we've enjoyed we've had some excellent ball games of this world series a couple of blowouts the Dodgers in the first ballgame the Yankees on Sunday Game five but those those other games two three and four were something to see a lot of drama Jim Spencer one strike one out Yankees lead three to two were in the top of the sixth spencer's walked sparked around he was called out on strikes in the form very a book valuable man of the egg is this scene foul off how to play two strikes Spencer D aged you filled up defensively at first base at times if you get a lot of chance to play first base because Chris Chambliss didn't miss too many ball games just wander the entire regular season well at first held by Garvey G Michaels was going to be a manager next year Columbus in the Yankee chain in first base vote two strikes kind of a quiet Dodger crowd since the Yankees jumped ahead what was that in the dirt but he is a hitter is how automatically the first base occupied to strike out in that particular case the balls missed the hitter was out but the runners can advance patelliday I'm surprised he didn't go to second base Tony only time you do that with two outs I mean the Ferguson go to second base I know Piniella did but the Ferguson had no intention of trying to get him he just what the best way didn't have to do that do that that's kind of play that you got to get a little rattled because the hitter nettles was up and his Spencer was up but they did advance got to be charges what a wild pitcher pass got a stolen base because the only time that you throw to first base with two outs subscribe dial with the Yankee runner in scoring position but he wasn't stealing on to play he went after the ball one in the dirt so I don't like in the stolen base we will check the visitors square fouled back one ball one strike two out it boils down simply that Piniella didn't know the rule neither did Ferguson and so Piniella when he saw the ball swung and missed he figured yet to throw him out of first base he didn't really run like he was dealing he kind of took off so I don't know it's got to be I believe a wild pitch or a stolen day or not as Tony's a wild pitch or a passed ball we may get the official ruling there's Piniella at second with two outs you question you don't to reel up the official scorer decidedly why would I hang on to the fact never questioned you Tony Doyle who's doubled going around a bit Gotham in the second inning keep that Yankee rally low these single in the fourth is two for two two balls one strike two outs an L at second charge a wild pitch on the strikeout to godson I don't agree with that really breaking ball - hi three and one the door who's the they could Ferguson had elapsed he didn't know the rule yet but he wasn't trying to steal until the ball in dirt 'no strikeout was made he didn't go until the ball got away from Ferguson why punish to pitch if you get you don't know what's going on I would have punished you yes driving another Kieran in the sixth well sure watch this drawn on Monday I think from here look like he gave furnishing the football to handle it hit the mound bounced inthere Ferguson is set just didn't catch the ball he should have made to play and the Sun is coming out now here's Piniella going home and I look like Ferguson might have taken his eye off the ball and looked at the runner right at the last moment you see another angular Piniella scoring on the ball by going up the middle you can't really get a good look at Ferguson's eyes but there was a good flow he should have been able to handle it my name is a fine throw from centerfield this is what the Dodgers were supposed to be to do the outfield and get causa with two out to stick Piniella coming he wanted to force a mistake and the IDB if you make a good throw you got us we've still got a one-run lead if you don't make a good throw there's a botch up we're going to have the fourth runner on the board a two-run lead and that's what happened Brian Doyle and second for his first time up got his first extra-base hit in the American League he had 10 singles during the regular season right now he is 3 for 3 with two runs scored and a couple of RBIs Tommy Lasorda has gone to the bullpen as Bucky Dent with June it's Intuit apps and there is young Bob Welch the dramatic confrontation that joke there's yelling called for you earlier in this World Series against Reggie Jackson won that time so as Bob Wells comes in to get loose tell you the score is the a ps4 and the Dodgers two rat game number six in Dodger Stadium recap very quickly what's happened so far in this ball game the Dodgers jumped off to one-run lead Lopes with a home run here's that play thrown from Monday Joe well Lasorda said he would give up some defense by putting it in Ferguson to get some offense and it cost him right here because it looked like it was a ball Joe could handle the Piniella it was not yet at the plate didn't handle the ball in Piniella was safe so it's a 42 can Yankee lead now Bob Welch is come on he's the heart throw we told you about who had the confrontation with Jackson and wanted earlier and then he suffered a loss and one of the other World Series games two outs one ball no strikes on Ted four to two of the Yankees lead over the Dodgers with garlic second Third World Series appearance by Welch one save one loss there's Doyle at second he's been a hero in this ball game with three base hits in a couple of RBIs for the Yankees three innings pitched well two struck out four giving up one base on ball one run fouled off out of play two balls one strike Lopes with a home run gave the Dodgers an early lead that was leading off the ballgame for the Dodgers then the Yankees came back with three runs in the second inning on three hits one error key blow the Doyle double in the third the Dodgers came up with another run double by Ferguson he was driven home by Lopes his second RBI he saw what is happened before Wells came in the Yankees came up with another three balls one strike two outs Yankees lead for the two of the dive before the top of the sixth dials at second there's your line score trouble there's going on the road as go to battle the Bucky Dent was also three for three and it is amazing the eight and nine hitters are six for six in this ball game well one double by go out and they've done some kind of job though it gets jammed with his fastball but he still has enough force behind his swing to just loop on those polite singles it really stings a pitcher ball is not hit good and Bucky Dent now has 10 base hits 23 times if batty is driven in seven runs and Doyle is 7 for 15 he bet he never goes after a fastball one strike when you can get this kind of production from your 8 9 hitters it is a real bonus 6 for 6 between Doyle and death 2 strikes out rivers what style round third if he gets it he just barely gets it whoops just came close he might have got the corner they want you to step right in the middle so there's no doubt but he gave you a little excitement coming around there one ball two strikes is that the way you were taught to step in the middle the way I ran yes if I ever got there and one thing state long toll always told us to do just the way Donald at the inside corner with a left foot cut it more sharp Oh any fast runner I mean I mean I was facing the station I wasn't like you guys Express I got the first I had to stop the second for gas I've got the third I to stop for repairs you applied on it walked up you got 114 ballgames one here we did it on merit absolutely did it on trouble he got it again come up with to arrive it'll go to the last of the sixth the Yankees lead 5 to 2 over the Dodgers the Dodgers will send up Davey Lopes Bill Russell Reggie Smith to try for this comeback out of the field right now man who is someday going to move into baseball SEC special section of the Hall of Fame as red barber and Mel Allen it is our partner Curt Gowdy thank you Tony right place at the right time has happened too if somebody would have told Bob lemon in spring training you may manage the world championship team this year lemon would have had him locked up fired by the White Sox coming to the Yankees on the rise he stayed in the background we watched him over there very quietly in that Yankee dugout his clubbing the lead now but what a human it was going fired heart of the 50 goat and now the manager if his club whole does lead the manager of a world championship team Bob lemon now back to Tony first rank hello look stupid too both RBIs this ball game to the doctors a home run in a single it also has a stolen base good the bag retires pitching right there on the first pitch good hard slider a good changeup here you see Lopes get out in front of that ball bounced it easily down to Greg nettles another fine play by them but on top of that a fine exhibition of pitching and changing speeds by catfish hunter here's another look at nettles who seems to catch everything he gets to down there a big asset for the Yankee infield you've heard the expression soft hand you just had a chance to see him on that in-between hop he just caressed the ball to his body got a tough hop Greg nettles and the Yankee infield has had some kind of super World Series defensively Russell it's a deep to left field on a one ball pitch but not deep enough now white will commit he's got it for the second out okay Greg Nettles you might have been the man as you said Tom that turn this world series around for the Yankees in game number three or did you say that Joe I guess you both did a little bit I salsette it a couple of us at that in the Jackson play the interference and alleged interference a - I'll let you spend one Bob Yankees 5 Dodgers 2 are in the last to the 6th down at file there's Jim lefeber the man who managing this Dodger organization the minor leagues this year who took the place of Jim Gilliam a real favorite Tony just to put a cap on Kurtz and he said it so well that Bob lemon he said you know a championship club I just have to stay out of the way I think so she has had to take the pitching staff that had some arm problems there's Garvey on deck one ball two strike coach terrific the Enki ballclub has has been said many times done the impossible and off lock gate from 14 behind when Billy Martin resigned he had the club at a five-game winning streak through this kettle and back priya to to us under facing smith under the man with five consecutive 20-win seasons he pulled the string on a 302 pension might stand play months is over now he's got a big foots the mass look out for them on you know lemon he is too modest and that's why you have so much respect for him because he's a hall-of-famer but it was just a case look at Munson getting near that shades of Earl battey remember he hit the ball fence so hard lemon I think taking over that club Johnny has had some problems he had some incidents like the bus incident even in this World Series assistant case of him putting the fire out with water rather than gasoline he's been something three balls two strikes to our cook really hooking he hit it hard cutter even on 3 & 2 the first pitch off-speed breaking ball pull it foul this time you went way inside about six inches off the plate they get the good part of the bat out Smith had to pull it foul there you see the road record of the Yankees any team of the major leagues the best poll file again Hunter's pitches are so close to have such good movement and changes speeds when they round the corners it's difficult to lay off his bat pitches Tom we know he has such good control that he's going to be around the strike zone in order if he misses with the pitch is only going to miss two or three inches his lifetime career walk average is 2.5 per game that's career checks wave at fifth chopped ball nettles dispensers from a retired skip three up three down six we go to Dodger Stadium the score the Yankees five the Dodgers two and we'll be back after these messages from your local station we're in the seventh inning Roy white Thurman Munson in Jackson against Bob Welch white one for three high ball one Dodgers trailing by three Yankees five runs nine hits no errors Dodgers two for one all the way back and it's ball 2 Roy Roy white has had a good series eight 4:23 the story his last two guys in the Yankee lineup Doyle and dent especially dead three balls no strikes boy right we've seen Welsh in this world series and we still haven't had a look at the ground the growth ever no you guys at the 130 games Roy white draws a base on balls so the leadoff man is on buckshot in the Dodger Stadium from the parking lot live from Dodger Stadium where the Yankees are leading by three five to two and a seventh inning with nobody out one man on Munson who bounced out to the shortstop in the first struck out and bounced out you might see hit and run right here nobody out and white on first lemon may start the runner Yankees reading their base runners have been pretty aggressive they haven't been that way like the Dodgers as far as stealing Joe but they've started quite a few of them in hit and run situations they've challenged everybody it's a striker fastball Bob Welsh and relief of Don Sutton there you see the split screen Roy wipe the base one word first nobody out Munson surprised everybody trying to bunt for the base hit two strikes there is Bob Lemmon 55,985 here tonight Roy white 1977 series used only as a pinch-hitter he was old for two foul ball out of play right side there was no th rule so he was on the benches Jackson rivers and Piniella played the outfield but Roy White's only a factor in this series he's on first Thurman Munson the batter with the Counter Strike 2 just missed outside one ball and two strikes account Welch's job very simply there's Reggie Jackson on deck Walters job very simply is to shut the Yankees off for another couple of innings and hope the Dodgers can get something going it is look in the side Garvey's saying banker the middle end line up covered up we won out base hundred first is Roy white Jackson bounced out to the shortstop in the first struck out blue plate umpire Joe Brinkman called time Oh as far one of these battle show the boss says he really broke tips his neck and now we got a 72 bum game with Jackson hit that ball which has become a trademark Piniella takes it outside for ball one he just stood at home plate for a minute to watch it sail out it's low ball two he really put a charge in and I don't know which one was fired and that one or the game the home run in Game one but they're both pretty close center field Monday going back so is Smith Monday takes charge regi takes his biggest swing as anybody that I've seen no big leagues voting the big guys Stargel and McCovey in the national league and we hit some he knows that they're gone he hits those shots that they're just out of everything and that's gone he likes to enjoy him too does he love to watch last time he was here of course in Dodger Stadium of facing Bob Welsh well struck him out in that very exciting ballgame what a dramatic game that was regi just put a crusher honor seven runs 10 hits no errors for the Yankees 241 and time is called once again you see John Kibler he was the one who called time he's at third-base bill Haller at second base call time Joe Brinkman called time we've seen relatively few arguments on balls and strikes sure there was a controversial play at Yankee Stadium really the umpires have not had a lot of heat there's the sort of from the players on ball and strike calls in this series the only one big argument is that play it Russell Anibal Jax that's it final play have been very peaceful nettles pulls it foul Jackson that was his ninth home run in this series he's sixth on the all-time list Mickey Mantle leads with 18 Babe Ruth is 15 yogi 12 Duke Snider 11 Gehrig 10 Reggie Jackson 9 Mickey rivers holes court nettles takes it low two balls one strike two outs two runs are in tremendous home run by Reggie Jackson Davey Lopes hit a home run to open the game for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first Yankees erased that with three in the second and they just got two more off the handle Reggie Smith should have no problem so that ends the inning the seventh inning the start Dodge's - and for the Dodgers it will be Steve Garvey Ron Cey and Dusty Baker the youngster Bob Welch on the Dodger bench just gave up a two-run homer to Reggie Jackson you'll watch now is Barbie saying Baker will try to score some months Dodgers lying fried makes the plane we're in the seventh if the one thing the Yankees have done throughout this series as you see the line drive catch by why why does they've been very steady defensively they've had spots where they've been sensational nettles and Doyle and dead today a couple times but they haven't messed up too many balls Jill no they haven't and here is Ron Cey it's a strike I started to say a name one and I'm sure six tough innings out of catfish hunter he is pitching a four hitter it opened up with a home run by Lopes Lopes has two of those four hits left field Roy white comes in he'll not get this one and there's the 50 Ron Cey is on is alive the job the doctors are going to get back they gotta have some production of these new guys the guys did a lot for during the regular season and then they've only got eight outs left I'm gonna have to hustle maker maker bounced out in the second inning robbed in the base hit by Bucky Dent down the left-field line my wife is there two outs there's a play that I look at my score sheet is say hits back to first that double play in the third inning started by Brian Doyle big play you bet then I give them a couple votes for MVP in this world series again it's not over where the Dodgers have had five three-run innings in the first five games of this world series that's their biggest inning and they're going to have to get at least another one of these to get back in and then maybe another big inning to get out in front both the scouting reports and bob nieman was the other scout for the Yankees along with Tebbetts and craft and Ed Libertad Charlie metro and jerry stephenson for the dodgers all conner almost fellas he threw that the one thing they all stressed was that the other guy has the ability to come back you got to nail it down because they can come back you know what the Yankees did all year and he's dodged is the same thing you know they were six and a half games out at one time everybody kept talking about Cincinnati in San Francisco so both clubs can come back right now the Yankees are leading by five seven two two one is seventh two outs one on have to right field is a inches of - runs Rick Monday that was a closed front and you can see Monday as he walks back he thought he had one farmer teammate a hunter he was the man playing centerfield when catfish pitched his perfect ball game one ball one strike two outs Spencer playing behind say first base that's out of play you know as we get closer here to Joe we got two outs of the seventh-inning the guy in the Yankee bullpen big goose Gossage could certainly come to play is he one to pitch if Kentish does get in trouble does give up a long home run they still have the big guy coming out of the bullpen that certainly a bus in their corner 11 won't wait long either off the handle popped up he jammed in Bucky Dent calling for Bucky Dent makes the play so the 7th inning ends and doctors do not score at the end of 7 completed in to score Yankees 7 the Dodgers 2 the Dodgers have a new pitcher Doug rau is come on in relief and he's been cut in the center of a controversy why he wasn't used well one of the Dodger Scouts recommended in his scouting report that rau should be one of the pitchers in Yankee Stadium against the egg is because of that ballpark and they're left-handed power of course Mickey rivers too so route comes in now five runs down and let's share what Lasorda had to say about why he hasn't pitched him earlier Tony we have been able to get the position where we could use Doug right see we started Tommy John thinking that you have to have one picture that would be able to pitch in three couple three ball games in other words he'd have to go the first two fourth and the seventh and Doug rau was going to be used exclusively as a long relief man we haven't had that opportunity to use him and any event that Don Sutton doesn't do well tonight we've got Doug rau ready and we had him ready in case Sutton wasn't able to pitch so this is the thing that we've gone with Doug rau he's done a tremendous job for us this year he wants 16 ballgames but he and Rhoden had to be used in a certain situation Tommy Lasorda explaining the rau situation how he figured in the Dodger plans he's out there now against Jim Spencer fastball misses ball one Joe Garagiola with Tony Kubek Curt Gowdy and Tom Seaver Dodger Stadium we're in the eighth inning 72 Yankees leading foul ball on ball one strike Spencer walked and scored Yankees able to capitalize a base on balls of Spencer they scored a base on balls to white the seventh he scored on Jackson's home run you put him on set the table and somebody would come along to clean it off curveball outside two balls in one strike ten hits in this game the last game in Yankee Stadium 1828 hits and two days off the handle Ron say should have no problem no doubt that duck rod disappointed he said he was but he said I was veteran pitcher I cannot second-guess my manager Tommy Lasorda there's Bob lemon the Yankee manager and Yogi Berra this is Brian Doyle he double and scored drove in one run that was in the second and he singl in the fourth he's single and scored in the sixth 7 for 15 this is for a ball player who is supposed to be a blowout pass he's helped out a little bit give us a defense when Willie Randolph got hurt he and Stanley have done some job this one is pulled into the stands and then you pressure I think it's an overlooked thing with this youngster yet he didn't play that much this year in fact the double e at the left field was his first extra-base hit as a Yankee joy what you're saying so true and there you see five hits in a row the record is six by Thurman months of the Yankees in 1976 and Leon was at Goose kozlov Washington 24 World Series whoa came within inches of joining the two pretty good ballplayers you know what I think is also important Joe that Doyle came up later on in the season by this World Series performance it might sure him of a job of the Yankees next year as that utility infielder and that's got to be a big plus for him because he obviously was concerned about it he's had some series if proud of him in Cave City Kentucky curveball and Ryan Carl is retired with fans via well he was going for it number six to tie Munson of Gazans record but brow makes an easy play little chopper had plenty of time to make that jump and tie it Brian Doyle in very close his first World Series here is Bucky Dent Bucky drove in two runs with a single in his second he singled to center and he drove in a run with a single in the sixth ball 110 for 23 what a finish this guy's head how to play go back to that Red Sox game when he just looped one into the screen for the big home run now enjoy you talked about taking advantage and that's a obvious factor these Yankees they are really something they're the most opportunistic team that I have ever seen and I think one reason because of that is they have so much experience in the lineup white Munson Jackson Piniella nettles they have a lot of years out there and I think that rubs off on the young guys kids that haven't played that much the Doyles and the dent I think that's a big plus for the entire team having all that experience in the middle of your lineup there's the one two pitch inside to my first World Series was 1946 lemon how much how much help guys like howard paulette terry more with whitey Kurowski they would you felt like well if I just showed up I'm going to be alright you need that experience debt of the middle Russell quick throw so it's one two three Wow Satsuki we're going to the bottom of the game seven doctors two and due up for the Dodgers in the eighth inning it'll be joe ferguson vic davalillo the d H and davey lopes a hot hitter joe ferguson leads it off Bob lemon adds Paul Blair the outfield replacing Mickey rivers for defense so Blair is in centerfield and Ferguson who has won 4-2 leads it off is coming fun is trying to get something going here doctors down to six outs 55,985 here tonight inside ball one catfishes puts a super game here tonight the only five hits and two runs the Yankees though got the big guy going in the bullpen just in case goose Gossage has gone down to warmup two balls one strike catfish is struck out three center field Paul Blair at night wait here comes Bob there looks fine Pam over the fence Fred Couples Bob lemon has come out to talk to his pitcher catfish mainly he's got passage out there Munson will be a big factor in this decision time well I think Bob listen to the both of them he's already made his decision whose gossip is coming in he wanted five maybe six companies from catfish the smile on his face he has four goose Gossage who come in this big guy and really throw seven runs 10 hits and no errors for the Yankees runs six hits and one error and the only complete-game we had in this series has been by Jim Beattie that was somebody in New York we ate number five he didn't have any in 23 starts the Yankee Gossage making this way in one of the tough things for a catcher is when a manager comes out and in front of the pitcher asks you what do you think what kind of stuff is you got with the pitchers staring you down you as we look at the Dodger fan basketball was sort nice half of this ground they respectability but I think tuna lemon in that situation Joe when he comes to the mound he's there's a lot of mutual respect between Jim catfish hunter and Thurman Munson boat well the mound is really no place for Heroes I mean I've heard pitches said I got my good stuff and you know that they be laid out and they think that it's really a mark of weakness but the good pitcher I know Sparky talks about you Tom whitey Ford I mention Howard koala Department ago Harry poutine these guys like that who as the catfish it's quite a picture right there the mom there's no place for heroes if you don't have it get some help especially when you got a guy like Gossage out there seven of these two runs six hits three strikeouts one walk the one thing that a pitcher should do when his manager does come to the mound and something that I've always tried to do in the games that I've pitched there's no who makes the decision out there manager comes to the mound how do you feel he asked the catcher what's he got give the manager an honest decision and then let your manager make the decision you're in or you're out you tell them you got to give them an honest answer how you feel and then let your manager make the decision Tom in the all-star game Gossage had its problems we seem to be over throwing that ball really want to put extra on it so we'll wait and see here as vic davalillo comes up his side Tony all-star game I was there and that's one of his problems he can try and throw the ball too hard he's got such a good basketball but there are times in a game ASAE's though 95 miles an hour try and throw it 98 miles an hour and then his control will go out the window leo on his second basis Ferguson gosse's this is his third game he's pitched four innings he hasn't allowed a run hasn't allowed a hit walked one and he's struck out two Furguson seven to two think about this situation doctor hitter certainly not gonna have to guess what pitches coming and then they're going to get dead red heat Gossage throw the ball hard harder and hardest focus as hard as he can for couple innings bouncing ball up the middle will be a tough play I'll try cement there's a spark from over a lane another fastball right now pouncing into the ground is Brian go homeless made a super play most difficult you or patient running away can't get too much on it but he was Davey Lopes Oh the line strike nobody out purpose in the third on the play two strikes to count on Davey Lopes who's been the hottest hitter the first to name a single to drive in the run in the third both runs driven in by Davey Lopes you scored one struck him up is out on strikes of passage gets his third strike out of the series his first out a big out for the egg might have sunk or maybe even a slider Lopes a very good fastball hitter ball looked like it was in the strikes and that's a big out of the Yankees Russell takes it low for ball bill Russell's single in the first inning as Lasorda looks on Russell walked into 34 two balls no strikes nettles hollers something to Gossage has get the ball over make him in two baserunners on it's a strike fifty-five thousand nine hundred and eight Russell a hotshot minnows over the first couple to get a strike started by the Dodgers in the end eight complete innings the score Yankees 7 Los Angeles Dodgers 2 here's a look at that inning ending double play the Dodgers had a rally going but mr. nice guy Greg nettles the suck em up infield of the New York Yankees over to second and over to first and Noah Russell grounds into the double play there's the take out at second base Brian Doyle right over and under and look at Gossage look at goose Gus have come off the mound look like he went up for pick rebound didn't he he is a heavy man goose jumps straight up that's not a rare thing for Nettles Greg holds a major league record for third baseman with 54 double plays that was in 1971 game being held up now as we have some fireworks a fan ran on now some fireworks being dropped out there Dodger fans a funny way a weird way to show we'll show the more the disappointment but the firepower really came from the Yankees is Jim Spencer load of mom here is Paul Blair first time about this game he swings and misses at the first pitch he and a good touch Doug rau I can't believe this they're playing this game and there's a smoke bomb in that field and they're not good anything about it that is really gonna add some smoke at two strikes umpires keep looking out this smoke is about going out so it's alright glare on three pitches and rau get seen rau retired of three men in a row so this one out brings up Roy white due to the length of tonight's game we would like to remind you that immediately following its conclusion except on the west coast and most Mountain zone stations you'll be able to enjoy your local news coverage and don't forget to stay tuned right after that for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson now for those of you on the west coast in most Mountain zone stations you'll be seeing your local news and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson at your regular time one strike on Roy white one for three tonight that was a single in the first inning strike two growl Don Sutton started Bob Welch and now rau catfish hunter for the Yankees replaced by goose Gossage outside 72 z-score we're in the ninth inning Yankees are out in front one out nobody on Dodger bench says it all a grim Dodger bench loyal wife and gravid two outs right number two let's pause briefly for a station identification this is the NBC television network Joe Carroll along with Tony Kubek Curt Gowdy and Tom Seaver at Dodger Stadium sixth game of the World Series two outs nobody on Thurman Munson the batter the score Yankees 7 Dodgers 2 Munson dribbles one down the third-base line going to be a tough play he'll not get him doesn't in feel here once in his own with a basehead that brings up Reggie Jackson chasing the ball going down the third-base line Ronnie Cey comes in swinging bunt a very difficult place to make say was playing back really a snow chance see how far back he is there third base and he's going to come all over in it's almost a perfect drag bunt from where he's playing there's no way to get Munson who runs route very well for a catcher Jackson would a tremendous home run his last time up who tries for another one strike one Jackson will really close at 77 World Series with a big finale blast 72 ninth-inning rau calls time now you know John really impressed watching this Yankee team I watched them all the way through the playoffs and went to the playoff games at Yankee Stadium and then watching them through this World Series how professional and opportunistic they are I must say it again it's just a a really take advantage of the situation they know how to go for the jumper and know how to go for the kill I'd say it's an amazing comeback that they made count it out you can hear the nails hit that coffin is here being nailed into it refused to give up came back and here they are just three outs away from defending the world's championship it'll be interesting what happens in that Yankee clubhouse if they do hold on and win and we'll be there with our camera those Jackson 1 we got a discussion Reggie saying abide and Joe Brinkman say no the back we'll see oh now here Jackson is stunned what was it No sister bomb you judges playing now here is the replay if it didn't hit him hit him very hard I hit him on the bar and that's a very difficult call for the umpire to make Reggie right down on the two balls and two strikes Reggie Jackson wanting to give up a time in the World Series can you let's go up and swing that lumber two outs Munson's on it first fouled back he gets reaction Jackson he got booed for taking batting practice today he put on some show Doug rau two strikeouts here in the ninth inning months in the base runner at first time call Jackson trying to get set will have Reggie Smith Steve Garvey and Ron Cey Jackson strikes Ricky Smith up for the Los Angeles Dodgers deleted off Reggie Smith Steve Garvey and Ron Cey Tom it's hard to imagine when you come down to this it all began back in March and now you down Meow's leader Ali a whole season it's a crazy long game Joey you start way back when it's still snow up in the North Country and you play about 30 games in spring training and then you pay a hundred and sixty two games during the season then you've got the playoffs four more games and then here it is six more games add up to about 200 baseball games from the year comes out you need three outs and you can be the world champion to get goose Gossage on the mound your free agent that they picked up from the Pittsburgh Pirates Andrew foreign territory and Dodger Stadium it makes all the work and all the travel and all the hotels and all the airplanes and all the getting into towns at 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning and working seven days a week it makes it much more than worthwhile that's for sure players out there obviously you're not playing for money they're playing for pride professional pride is one of the beautiful things in this country so it's Reggie Smith three outs Gary Thomasson is gone into play left these fan first bits left field Thomasson going back he has room there is one out there is Piniella he's been replaced by Jay Johnstone and right field catfish hunter who wants to see the finish that Yankee bench says it all there is Reggie Jackson Steve Garvey who's had a tough series Yankee standing two outs away from defending their championship goose Gossage who came on to get a strikeout in a double play right field down the line it is curving foul you see Jay Johnstone not that kind of yellow pants that guy you probably could go visit him Sunday to the for there's a very somber Dodger bench right there they won the first two games here in Dodger Stadium and went to Yankee Stadium a got cleaned out good fastball by Bruce Gossage the goose the Yankees leading by five Garvey fouls one back these Yankees with this amazing comeback if they hold on will Climax by defending their championship that came in the World Series lost the first two and no team has ever lost the first two and won the next four teams have lost two and one in the seven-game series but never in a six-game series is the Dodger bench with Lasorda it really says it all two strikes one out high and tight Gossage against Garvey is out on strike so there are two outs Ron say the Yankee bench standing anticipating with Dodger bench hoping hoping against hope Yankees it will be their 22nd World Championship and second in a row if they can hold on it's a struggle Yankees came from fourth place and 14 games behind in July two strikes one out away Oh and now there are two strikes woman another world championship or second championship in a row one in second Liang 1 1 pitch outside two balls one strike the Yankee banshan anticipation of a win and the Dodger bench very sad very somber and that's very understandable of course goose Gossage looking for two more strikes I will wrap it up there's his strike his game the west coast the most Mountain zone stations you'll be able stay tuned right at the bathroom Tonight Show going Johnny Carson fouled out of play and on the west coast you'll see the local news and in Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson at the regular time we're down two balls two strikes two outs Gossage against say the whole season may be wrapped up in this pitch Papa Muntz he's got room the field Yankees of the so there's the Dodger bench Niki's head for the clubhouse where that's a sign of jubilation and the Yankees are very very happy Dodger fans are streaming on the feet looking for souvenirs trying to steal a player's hat Reggie Jackson's going through the crowd in that situation you wonder about your personal safety but it's a happy feeling when you get to the club now which one of the rare feelings and sports I've been very lucky myself to be on a world championship team and there's a sad Dodger Clubhouse I've been in that situation 220 long week for Tommy Lasorda is not a man in baseball that loves his organization more than Tom Lasorda and he does love the Los Angeles Dodgers the world champions for the second year in a row the New York Yankees saw our cameras and the Yankees there you see Jim Beattie and here it goes the pouring of the champagne which of course has become traditional 7 runs 11 hits and no errors the Yankees and it's two runs seven hits and one error for the Los Angeles Dodgers the Yankees are the 1978 world champions Don Sutton the losing pitcher catfish hunter is
