California and I like to wish everyone a happy new year and introduce the rest of the seniors from this year's squad this man won nearly every Player of the Year honors in the country two-time unanimous all-american second-best rusher in college football history the seventy-nine Heisman winner Charles white tailback senior from San Fernando California one of the biggest players in USC history six seven and 280 although sidelined all year keep an eye out for number 77 he starts today senior offensive tackles from Tijuana many pool the USC center one of the mainstays of a remarkable offensive line he's also an honors student hi my name's Chris foot I'm a Senior Center in Boulder Colorado this unanimous all-american been collecting a wart since starting as a freshman four years ago runner-up for the Outland Trophy as the most valuable lineman in the country nostrovia my name's Brad petty offensive guard senior from the University of Southern California I'm from Kansas City the se defense at all back 10 defensive linemen my name is Myron laughs qey I'm a defensive tackle it's senior year home towns Defensive Player of the Year perhaps the most consistent but most underrated performer on the Trojan defense the name is Larry McGrew outside linebacker senior my hometown is Berkeley California this senior past defender will have his eye on Easter this season he made 52 tackles in knocked down a team high 12 passes per wart mr. pack senior old town San Francisco California a walk-on in 76 through four years this man has handled almost all of the kickoff chores for the Trojans hi my name is Rob crew I'm a senior play sticker I understand Gabriel California what aside I've written 6,000 depending on whether you're counting the bands and the media and all the rest jammed into this Rose Bowl as we start a new sports decade USC Ohio State the players will be entering the field in a moment a cheer from across the way as the Trojans USA defeating Texas Washington Stanford [Applause] [Music] Arizona Washington and UCLA to win another trip to the Rose Bowl they have the best Bowl record of any team in the nation they've won eight team bowl games and they have been the most frequent visitors to this one in Pasadena [Music] Southern California despite that one tie to Stanford a touchdown favorite Hawkins the Ohio State Buckeyes like one of the things we can look for in this ballgame we not only have offensive defensive teams on the field we also have specialty and one of the edges that Ohio State brings into this ball game is perhaps a much better effect not perhaps they have a better kicking game than SC you have ski they have a kicker with great range but also who's been very consistent and also in the planning department I think they have they have the edge over far back there we have an interesting situation with too far pop dot Pop Warner what are they dig former P P and K winter V P and K winners but outstanding punters I think prior probably the lesser of the two certainly an outstanding chance for us to watch the kicking game at his best with Ohio State John Robinson five-year contract he signed it yesterday he'll be at the University of Southern California and I know that place is hero J yes it does you know this is interesting the Ohio team hasn't come out I recall one year back in Notre Dame Notre Dame one year had had the SC team wait on the field 15 minutes before they came out so when we went back there in 1967 to play them we hadn't beaten him there in 34 years and McKay would not take the fill until the Notre Dame team came out they threatened to forfeit the game the officials came in and said we're gonna forfeit the game if you don't take your team out on the street Toula get dressed we're going and we waited a little while and a Notre Dame team took the field but this is interesting uh Ohio came out unusually early for the warmup we've commented on that they came out about an hour 15 hour 20 minutes before the warm-ups and they should be on the field now and they're not out and maybe almost like going on you wonder if it's gamesmanship or whether or not the Buckeye just lost communication with their arrival time and perhaps roll Bruce a first-year coach for the Buckeyes giving him a little added incentive verbally certainly one of the things with the fact that when a team travels as Ohio State has to create to another team's hometown they are in a disadvantage even though SC is not playing their home stadium they have been living at home and they have been much more comfortable much more able to cope with the pressure of this bowl stay there [Applause] mile off the turf out there right now Saiki going on Woody Hayes gone or old gross takes over from a man him through school at Ohio State there he is the 40 year old Bruce who last coached in Iowa State they started with a win against Syracuse struggled to victory against Minnesota beat Washington State barely defeated UCLA but that was the turning point in the season as they won here in Los Angeles on a 90 second drive of 80 yards then they roll past Northwestern Indiana Wisconsin Michigan State Illinois Iowa before their 1815 win in the finale at Michigan and here they are again in the Rose Bowl one of the things we might talk about early as the fact that Ohio State in their home stadium plays on artificial turf this is only the second game they've had all year on natural turf and both of those games by the way they really struggled with it was Minnesota and a UCLA Frank Sinatra coin flipper hey Kenzie cows they said they're going to take the goal rather than receive I think white city will take the ball down on this here offend that referee change calhoune here's the coin for both of the Capulets get to give ya semaphore to indicate who of now it is USA will receive to our left and the Buckeyes of Ohio State will take it off all right that means that Ohio State will be on defense initially trying to shut that back forward to watch the offense okay we look for early well dick I think the Ohio State realized they can't stand in their man-to-man with USC I think they think USC's line may be a little too strong form so I think they're gonna give their see a lot of different looks I think the key guy to watch early is Todd bill he's the rover back he's number 25 he'll be moving around and I think he has a few tricks up his sleeve I think they got a few special play to try to control that's the running the football and inside ballot and all big Santa tech they have perhaps the best defensive player in terms of athletic ability on that Buckeye squad right USC will have the football initially to start this game some folks will enosis say when you're in a contest of this importance you'd rather be on defense initially I always felt that way when I was playing I wanted to be on the field to start out with so when you have such a potent powerful offensive se has with that magnificent powerful offensive line and also with Charles White Paul McDonald I can't help but feel that maybe if I were the coach at SC I would say let's put our offense let's put our best on the field immediately let's get off to a good start offensively let's get it going right now [Music] scarlet and Graham Ohio State aligned on the kickoff formation USA deploys to return Raisman Butler 86 and Michael Hayes 25 will be the deep men for the Trojans final from the Sugar Bowl Alabama some feel the top team in the country has defeated Arkansas 20 49 to finish an unbeaten year [Applause] [Music] going to the state bam Ohio State USC all the ones tied and Florida State you'll see them later from the Orange Bowl the 66th Rose Bowl game about the start as [Applause] and deliver city it'll be Michael he's a senior from San Diego in heels dick one of the things we ought to look for earlier if if Ohio State is going to control that SC offense they're going to have to do it with quickness rather than with strength starting lineups USC is the backfield run by Paul McDonald an academic all-american Marcus Allen tough fullback sophomore in the Heisman winter Charles white [Applause] and it's white first carry of the games it's only a couple a swarming Buckeye defense spearheaded by Marcus Merrick number 36 Keith Ferguson also in on the stop for the Buckeyes [Applause] [Music] USA Dan Garcia in Kevin Williams good speed good hands on the outside [Music] [Applause] for the first time at the 34 yard well you know the feeling.that student body right [Applause] I think that that's been a bread and butter flavor average 7.7 yards per carry foressi on the weak side if ever there was a misnomer calling Anthony Munoz the weak tackle that is a big strong offensive line horn Giants average 65 at night as you saw earlier first time in USC 30 white all the way to the 37 yard line a gate of seven look at the Ohio State defense Sawicki in this center Gary doing on the outside along with your own foster linebackers they'll be four of them Ferguson and Lachlan on the outside American Washington inside and that finds secondary that oj talked about guests Alice skilling sued the safety in Bell who's a rover we haven't seen Bell making those big plays have trouble here nearly going controlling SC second and three Marcus Allen with a handoff the fullback breaking tackles on the way to the Ohio State 40 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we'll be the heir apparent to trails white steel backslide not a bad running Colbert you have a great bag like Charles White in the back do you have your eyes on him what happens they don't give the ball yeah they give it to Marcus Allen and Allen showing his smoothness tremendous acceleration gets away from a second tackler big game % by USA with portable Isaac Elana scrimmage [Applause] [Music] [Applause] with a turnover loj talked about that talented deep defense of Ohio State here is yes I said each man bacteria would at least we voted on begin on the least one bullet you can see them they're very quick they're all excellent athlete I don't think I will throw bad it looks like it was behind him it looked like he was one of them ready to go up again and color splitters real well what's the quick ball read here as Ellis comes under the receiver taps it and then picks it up he only has to have one foot in he had it comfortably here to go a stir on first down throws intercepted by her [Applause] [Music] just a minute 51 into the first quarter it's Ohio State nothing USC nothing the Trojans have the ball at midfield [Music] yeah I think we're going to see a lot of people on those tackles gonna be hard to call white cutting to the outside the great way to stop it back is to force him to run laterally and count the number of people in on that tackle great team speed and great team hustle there were nine Ohio Buckeyes around that football and half of them on top of white second down and seven in motion is white down at the 33 [Applause] that'll made the tackle MacDonald has his first completion Kevin Williams has tremendous speed he's a 93 sprinter but his greatest asset is his quickness McDonald under pressure obviously to his secondary receiver gets the ball up Williams had cut back and forced bail so far off the ball that he had no chance to get back even though the ball hung momentarily fine play first down there penetrating deeper deepest penetration of the game at the 33 no score 1250 five left in the first quarter Alabama has won against Arkansas McDonald complete Dan's Garcia to the 14-yard [Applause] eighty-six Brazoria sixes he runs with Garcia got 21 passes on the season let's take a look at Paul McDonald quarterback not even a fake brother run there just steps back has plenty of time to throw the football the break is there good job of running the pattern finding the open area Butler's down to about the 15-yard line they mark it at the 14 first down us see it's white sweeping rifle cloppers Tim down to the 7-yard San Fernando high school he said that Anthony Davis was like a brother to me and it was indeed in this game as a freshman that Charles white became nationally known and they certainly follow through the knee oj he did a super job he came in they the Michigan team had shook up rookie bill child came in in a rush where I'd take 126 yards that was really to keep to the game to keep it a victory or 1450 victory by USC I think everyone thought when Bell came came out and we got him now and they said who is that who is that I found out didn't second three rukhsati emotions sometimes they'll stop and go back the other way white up the middle punched at the six yard line close to the five you'll be short of the first time by a long yard third down for John Robinson's USC Trojans Robinson after four years three Rose Bowls his teams have lost only six times in four years I like the fact that John Robinson came back throwing the football after after Robinson I mean after Paul McDonald threw that interception they were running the ball real well but the quarterback throws an interception you won't even have that confidence that he came back throwing the ball and I think he'll be throwing all day over here Paulette to the Ayers Rock Shawnee reversing back and then I use the extra black or white into the teeth of the Buckeye defense and me that at all they put up a good wall form I think he's short of it it's going to be close but he's about a yard short they're gonna have a decision to make here let's look at the charge [Applause] white coming to the outside playing with a short yardage defense of Ohio State that's Mark Sullivan just a freshman in there doing a great job [Applause] well John Robinson goes for the first down at they for [Applause] what a job [Applause] one of your guys oj my guest three times at all big tent performer I don't think I've ever seen a better reaction ball reaction by a quarterback in my life watch this he stops and comes back quits his body in the air and absolutely snatched that ball away from the receiver Vic Red John he thought he had a touchdown instead it's Ohio State's ball at the 5-yard line timeout 1022 left first quarter no score the Buckeyes have stopped USC twice on this play in the end zone Mike guest number 12 of the book I'm Marcus Marek number 36 forces that quarterback early does not let him have time to roll but the great play by guests reacting to that ball pulling it back holding us about the eight maybe the nine your Lari McGrew 57 outside linebacker for the trojans made the stuff we talked about games being won or lost on the line of scrimmage there were 96 liar and Lepke taking on the block right there on the line of scrimmage gets a good piece of the ball carrier hit him right on the line forward motion carried him for a small game but grew 57 and Ricky gray 35 also a piece of the action spotted at the 8 yard line second down six he's leased her to Campbell the fullback and he gets nowhere into the middle of that SC defense hi Sperling spearheaded the charge number 63 the offense for the bucco sensational sophomore slice turret quarterback Paul Campbell a senior and Calvin Murray a junior the running backs Jerry Williams Doug Donnelly they both can fly and Brad dwelle an outstanding freshman tight in one of the most experienced offensive lines in football a couple of 350 or seniors Burke Andrea and walk and Fritz on the other side there captain Lukens a soft our freshman he's the youngest and maybe the best of that whole offensive line Brett's an all-american choice leycester on third [Applause] chased by my the senior from Chatsworth California 96 let's talk for a second about that gamble going for the for the point's going for the 7 would they been better off taking a 3 normally you would say yes but I think they are aware that Alabama won the game and I think they planned a Warner win the game both teams that they want to win decisively they know what a national championship does for their recruiting and I think when you got a high screen Trophy winner in the back field you got two plays to get one yard I think it's a good gamble fell on that last play they gambled again with the runners Easter their stop I'm gonna kick it away Tom Morris from Fairport Harbor Ohio good punt from his own goal line he sends a beauty he's tripped up at the 45-yard line fumble but after he hit the deck so a good kick borrows from his goal line and USC will begin from its own 44 yard line Butler number three in the nation and punt returns his year eight Penson 16 seconds left in the first quarter SC Ohio State no score four and a half Bukka that's bill miles the coach of the tackles and the tight ends showing some of the blocking schemes they'll be adjusting those throughout the game trying to get the edge on FC USC with its wide receive honey the bee man they call in in the slide and trowels white wakes up three more than Ohio State thought he would get it will be second down in six s white now has rushed for six thousand twenty yards in yesterday to destroy we've talked about number 68 Sawicki he's sliding there to the outside that's buddy who just tackles him and puts in Punisher found somehow I don't think that's a legal block but you can see the effectiveness of a big man and Buddy has about forty pounds and three inches on [Applause] 76 pounds 48 of the butt guys put a mean hit on Alan to stop him cold Charles White on that lady a flip phone white I didn't know he can block I mean he really whacked the guy who came in there's something else we saw there and that's the ability of McDonald to be cool under pressure he had a tremendous rush on him still found the open man he does that perhaps better than any college quarterback in America to tight ends and roshani in motion so this is the run formation now they call that the zap when he reverses his field and white up the middle big down to the 31 that'll bring up second down and three Rukhsana just to give you the terminology they call it zip when Rock Shani starts and motion runs all the way to the other side why does that point he stops at the center position comes back and then they have a zoom that we haven't seen yet where he starts goes past the center and then we'll block upfield off tackle that's like pulling a garden giving them a running start at the snap you have to keep your wax out of your ears in that huddle they'll get a trouble zip zap zoom run Shani is slotted level white first down as he skids to the 25-yard line white is an interesting story on him all of the athletes at USC undergo the immersion test it's a test to measure the body fat Ricky Bell three-percent incredibly low that was the all-time low at the Institute this year this young man Charles white one point eight percent body fat and he is all muscle you drop him in the lake and he couldn't swim if he had a motor on his back raagh sunny in motion on first down [Applause] five teams waffling the spirit of the Ohio State defense foster in on the play as well we talked about plenty stunning and slanting watch number 55 Foster pops through the gap here and he's going to be the first man to meet him right there with the help of the fine line backer Jim Laughlin that's the kind of quick aggressive play that Ohio State is going to need today to shut down that SC offense Lawson five named most liable player by his own teammates he made the big plays early in the season they've got to the house stayed off to the great start second down 13 pass formation but they run it with Hayes up the middle on a quick hitter to the 24 yard line which will bring up third and eight for USC white back into the game Hayes goes out one of the dangers of doing all that stunning and slanting is that you may open up the wrong hole and certainly you can make the big plays you've got to be very careful and get some compensating brushes by people all across the line it's a it's a defense that must be very well coordinated so far they haven't been hit for the big one they spot at the 25 so it's third and nine that's Kevin Williams the fire to the left Garcia split wide right fooled every [Applause] rarely could draw past you a little drop play here and they almost had to miss this tackle he would have had the first down and maybe more you see the dive at him right there the number 25 Todd Bell who's a was a line but not a linebacker almost up in the linebackers position he's the rover of course and they were consist he was concerned about him they knew he was gonna be lined up different positions today I'm sure on that plate and he was assigned to the full-back Marcus Allen and he was standing there weight from SC has really been taking advantage that's right I interrupt you except to say that we have a commercial message we'll finish that thought mom @oj Eric Kipp apparently will try for a USC field goal when we return a scoreless tie Rose Bowl on a glorious day on this January 1st 1980 USA will try for the field goal over the 41 you Derek yep out of the hold of Scott Tinsley if there's plenty of rays but will inconsistent in his field goal long enough it's cool Eric Kemp who made but five of 13 on the year his longest was 45 defeat California that one good from 41 and USC takes the early lead for 37 left in the first quarter reminder folks had these 1980s begin and what a great sports year 1980 will be NBC starts its third season of sports world that'll be Sunday January 13 since its creation we're proud that sports world has brought you exciting and innovative coverage of American and international competition we've investigated into the controversial and often misunderstood side of sports in our sports Journal we had a lot of fun to different an outrageous displays on the crazy world of sport and we'll continue to bring you all this and more in the coming year on sports world as we kick off the 1980s January 13th right here on NBC the question for you Oh Jay yeah do you think it's more important in an emotional game like this to put points on the board first or is that a great advantage for you think it is I think SC is lucky to get that floor when they didn't for the first time because the momentum playing the game I got a big advantage of every foot because Tim Spencer takes a kickoff to the 20 and he's out to the 24 yard line but guy people killed he's a star of the future Tim Spencer channel 58 be the tackle for us see we talk about the sprinters who come down as headhunters number 58 Mike McDonald one of the finest 4sc you can see him turning it on here getting an eye on that ball carrier and there it is right there on Tim Spencer and a lot of help to follow USC has dominated this first quarter in possession over eight minutes to Ohio State's two minutes that's Calvin Murray finds a Kraken that FC defense and charges to the 30 it'll be second and a short five for the Buckeyes a look at the USC defensive alignment we haven't had a chance to set the defensive line you saw left earlier Sperling on the nose Dennis Edwards the other tackle position linebackers some quick ones Larry McGrew the strongest chip banks may get much better than the drew as he gets older and herb word you saw him with the interception watt Smith browner browner just a freshman he's in there because of an injury an ankle injury the course locked to move to corner Jeff Fisher not saying starting duty waster has Running Room 3035 and he's out for the 39 yard line Eric's wagons 81 we'll be the Buckeyes initial first down of this game if sister came out that time to throw actually it looks like he wants to throw more than run that sees defensive strategy is the own option plays this to force him to run the football they don't want him to pitch it they want him to care it himself they like to rough him up a little bit but I know they don't want this to happen they don't want him to drop back to pass and then scramble for the yardage that he's good the big advantage he has is the fact that he can't run and it opened up he got the first down trying to clarify when you mean ruffled up you don't mean to do anything illegal but this is a game of contact knee they're gonna say if you want to run out here number 10 dumps it off Cavalli a juggling catch did he come up with it he certainly volleyed at USC number 56 Dennis Johnson wound up with a football what's the call no dick I think it's going to be a joint reception in which case [Applause] waleed bounces at four or five times finally does get ahold of it right there and they both had at the same time the ball was on the ground I'm sure that's what they're calling let's watch the receiver now and watch how many times he bets it it two three four right there they both have it together Dennis Johnson pulled it away and came up with it a man named Bali certainly did it even a second down and five up the middle five yard line and short of the first down Ricky gray made the stop on Calvin Murray third down for Ohio State USC has the lead three nothing final minutes of this first quarter on the Rose Bowl game [Applause] John Robinson 44 years young as you're kidding him about breasts guy says [Music] sixty Leeson play-action looking deep he has Williams on the dead [Applause] but guys to celebrate three yards [Applause] showed you the power that watching him practice he has a powerful rifle right there you can't throw a better pass than that Williams out of the first tackle Kirk Ward number 23 there to save him bulldog him down but they're right on the 2 yard line hitching to get that 7 points in first and goal for the leycester keeps it and has stopped just shy of the goal line [Applause] t1 ship thanks for the shoulder Ohio State is less than a yard from the go-ahead school sure is amazing to me he's like you remind me of Terry Bradshaw a peek at the banking gets no read on him he doesn't have to really set up the throw that time he never stepped up to throw the ball included 53 yard standing interesting point gentlemen USC has not given up a touchdown in the first quarter all year Ohio State I'm deuce another tough opponents good night give it to Murray and they spotted outside was there ever a vicious hit made on the so that SC defense dan in the fifth you talk about lionsearch and this is where some of that physical strength is going to come in number 78 Georgia chica I think it's the guy in Ricky gray number 35 the man not Marik's Rockets 18 that's great goal line defense you know gray is tough he had an injury in the first quarter of last year's Rose Bowl game played the whole game made 15 tackles and required knee surgery after the game he to admit he was hurt played the whole game on a very serious injury and I thought what minute this thing is going to keep that not being scored upon in the first quarter record intact and seven seconds left to go in the first quarter confusion and wanting to score in this first quarter but there are guys have spent a time out for the ball talked about the emotional aspect of the game of getting on the scoreboard first I think one of the most draining things that can happen to a team is to get great field position to get a big play like that go down to the two yard light one and a half yard line and then get shut out with a with a play like we've seen on the goal line here I'll tell you barreling in the 67 Rose Bowl we were playing against Indiana here and we went right down the field and scored we had him southern nothing we went right down the field and next time and they stopped this on the floor yard line we had a fumble and we didn't score again until late in the fourth quarter we went into the fourth quarter down I mean seven three and had to score late but more important to finally win the game our old friend is here the Goodyear blimp to bring us a spectacular aerial shots from the Rose Bowl good to have you aboard happy new year we hope it a good year for soul go low high estate trailing us a Audrina thing possibly the last play of the first quarter [Applause] stop hold and back-to-back [Applause] the end of the first quarter the 66th Rose Baldy [Applause] laughs take faces forth and less than a yard when we return the score after 15 minutes USC 300 state nothing the Trojan horse eleven defensive men have played with that kind of strength fourth and goal for Ohio State less than a yard away as she looked idli first half statistics USC has state from the 2 yard line on the first three tries fourth and goal this is it for the Buckeyes three nothing USA slicer keeps it [Applause] that's the kind of football the kind of emotional football that was the recipe watch Dennis Smith's right there 49:35 great 42 lot but the whole team is just firing out you don't think they're excited there he comes cuts in miss Johnson who really made the initial hit credit Johnson the all-american inside linebacker here comes white to the free yard line stopped goal by Jerome Foster number 55 that was a remarkable go line Stan gentleman that was three cracks from inside the one and they didn't make it I tell you emotionally it's got to be disheartening to Ohio State at Sonia that it can stop them no matter what don't you think oj that that lifts the offense do when they see their defense perform that way yeah I think office may be a little tight they there too long drives I've only got three points but it certainly is gonna affect yes these defense I think they have all the confidence in the world here's white again finds a hole and gets out to the 11 maybe the 12 yard line good enough for the first time remarkable first quarter we did not see a penalty let's look at the hole that opens up here for Charles White and again I think the physical size and strength of SC's offensive and defensive lines is becoming very apparent here in the early going Charles White getting a nice gain full open for him but it said initial surge at the line of scrimmage and it's very tough to play against the man who's taller and bigger than you are you just can't see where that back is going well we said they were gonna work on some wiki in the middle try to work muscle in the leg they're getting away with it notice so if he's not playing on the nose anymore at the 10-yard line is all over the field Belen of course that's appropriate to the name rover let's talk about Bella moment over 25 for Ohio State he's interesting young man is a Middletown Ohio that was the same city that British Jerry Lucas butch got it now the Indiana basketball star Bell in high school jump long jump twenty four feet six and three-quarter inches that's a great high school jump but more importantly at broke a record set in 1933 in Ohio by Jesse Owens he is all over the field with 97 speed in the hitter today second and foul white doesn't get the ball a handoff is to Marcus out on 33 and Allen is out of bounds at the 18 yard line ray Ellis made the stop short of the first down third down three Marcus Allen doing a good job of adjusting there was no hole in the middle okay question for you I've always felt that the running ability of a back depended a lot of times on his vision his ability to see out of the corner of his eye yes I agree with that totally you know you have to have that good proof your vision I felt the biggest handicap I had as a runner in the last few years I lost the line of vision in my left eye and I felt missed all the flat path it was open he should have got them if the ball should have been able to Paul should have been able to get the ball to him and he did but look who was covering him Todd Bell 25 the one moment he's making a tackle on one side of the field the other to the other side to defense against the past and kicking team for USC david pryor number 17 he also won a national punt pass and kick contest average year of 36 yards per punt Mike guest number 12 deep for the Buckeyes at the Ohio State 45 beautiful perfect spiral chases guests to the 30-yard line 35 36 and that's all I'm Jones number 11 made the tackle for us a time out early in the second quarter in Pasadena 12:54 remaining in this quarter the Trojans of the USC lead Ohio State three to nothing Merlin Olsen OJ Simpson at the same Rose Bowl in Pasadena 12 minutes and 54 seconds remaining in the second quarter the Southern California Trojans leading Ohio State's but guys three nothing at the buck 45 yard line arts leycester comparison of his statistics the last two years look at the increase and touchdowns and decrease in interceptions and he has a man open Donnelly his favorite target he's a junior from Cambridge Ohio Joey browner at name sounds familiar brown or 47 wearing the same network because he comes from a very very talented football family that includes Outland Trophy winner Russ browner at Notre Dame Jim browner Willard browner there two more browner's coming as they have better than the rest quick replay as you watched least er well we don't have time for it but yes we do they're sleigh stirred back it's his favorite target Donnelly and again a fine pass thrown very efficient first down play the draw and it doesn't work as Calvin Murray trapped in the backfield and finally dropped by chip banks number 51 a sophomore from Augusta Georgia Tech one of the things that interested me in talking to archly sure about his preparation he said before his freshman year in the summertime he would throw the ball 500 times a day six days a week to strengthen that arm and this last year between the seasons he threw four to 500 times a day but only five days a week it's no wonder he has a powerful arm another thing they say that if you ever hurt the right armor was trapped held by the right arm he can throw the ball 50 yards left-handed he's a natural Lefty [Applause] second down and 12 and placed they're rolling and looking [Music] was doing exactly that he grounded watch slicer moving back to the huddle you see all Buckley's on the side of his helmet those are perfect plays and that's exactly what he is he is a big playmaker and there's a there is an art destroying the football away the quarterback who knows how to does not get caught that often again you you watch the rollout the running ability - you see him fire the ball away but he's looking right into the eyes of that receiver Larry McGrew 57 locked up on him still penalty placed her down the middle complete its ix-he pebbles and USC has recovered at the 33 yard line forty-two [Music] [Applause] I think they realize not especially after that goal line standing they're not gonna get too much running the ball on USC and I wouldn't be surprised to see see we should break a number of passing at visa ship records today they like the bike to break the completion directories but they like his receivers to hang on to the football fine hit by number 42 Ronnie Lott really took that ball away from Sykes SC's offense on the field at the 33 of the Trojans SC leading three nothing 11:36 remaining in the first half here at Pasadena food white running road here twenty-seven starting to make a move to the outside mic guests also hit on the tackle for Ohio State try and get an idea why there is so much room I know there was a great block thrown in there by foot linebacker Marcus baring but a tremendous amount of River white let's look for the endzone this will give us an idea there's Doolin being knocked inside Maricopa ran the play and white just did the rest on his own big game back to the action and a stop of the 40-yard line is Marcus Allen it's a quick handoff from McDonald and goes nowhere it'll be second down think a third down now on the no gain and about yard and a half for USC at the Trojan 42 yard line you see Paul Hackett in the yellow shirt signalling the offensive plays dish least are basically they sent out a couple of plays at a time or check that to McDonald and McDonald then has the option of audible I see him caught really anything he wants and bright enough to do it well white to the 45 in a first down picked his hole and got the yardage he needed for the first down we talked early in a telecast about the physical superiority that that's the offensive line and watch them here as they make room for their Highsmith Trophy winning the tailback plenty of room for the first down Rukhsana even adds to it as he comes in as that feedback although he got stuck pretty good on line of scrimmage but it is a first day USC with the lead we have so in 45 yard-line michael hayes of the game throws it incomplete Marcus Allen the intended target but he was well covered yes Todd Bell was over there again and he had help from Al Washington Washington number 15 was from Cleveland Ohio Nia's teammates been kidding him about his joy of being on the west coast they've already nicknamed him Hollywood Washington we told him the story about the Billy wells the old pony backfield of Michigan State few years ago when he batch awaited with this climate wanted a date with an actress I came here was a Debbie Reynolds home and finally got that date he said whoa listen you just told Pam Grier that I'm ready anytime she wants to call me down hold the white solid tackle there is al Washington on cue and I've noticed one thing every time I see put rocks on e or any of their tight ends and motion they run the football I think you're pretty soon out we should look for my passcode I try and set people up certainly one of the things that both teams have had is a tremendous amount of time to prepare for this game and you got to believe there's some tricks rolled up in those sleeves Kevin Williams is flanked to the left Michael Hayes in for white and Garcia's foot right [Music] from the 47 good protection [Applause] three sprinter [Applause] not only read the receivers but fire the Baldy [Applause] [Music] ray Ellis number 27 try again when they actually got a hole in near the goal line but too late six points on the board going for a seventh and a big early lead here 53 yards the touchdown throw and hip will try to tack on the extra Williams Williams who was a high school teammate of Charles white Sanford head well bless so USC with nine minutes 11 seconds remaining in the first half Valley to Ohio State 10 nothing here's McDonald 53 yards to Kevin Williams definition is big play he is the big play man he was the leadoff man on SC his NC to a champion relay team and in the 50 passes he fought three years 20 of them have been for touchdown that's making a Bigfoot has bringing it home [Music] take the touchback first on Ohio State at the 20-yard might be appropriate Dick Enberg they talked about an interesting aspect @oj Tucker touched on with us whilst 18 this is an unusual team they have the capability to come back they have the ability to hurt you with the big play released her as we've seen can throw the ball effectively he can roll out of there he can take what looks to be a certain loss and make it into a game and that's something that Big Ten teams especially Ohio State have not had in the past and it's important when you're down I tell you what we are aware of it in this area in Southern California they start the season out here against UCLA early in the year and they made a great fourth quarter comeback and believe me SC is aware of that last year against Michigan I saw him sit on the lead this year I think they'll keep trying to score can nothing donnelly in motion [Applause] [Music] [Applause] created jr. from wood behind New Jersey near the Pasadena climbs dr. Maier Lepke before the game I said you are are you excited he said yeah he said I missed the first when I red shirted last year I had mononucleosis I didn't know it and this year I feel great he looks great as he puts the attack on Murphy right there second down nine at the 21 for the Buckeyes as Williams and Donnelly both the great speed are wide left six eight targets least are looking down the middle [Applause] [Music] speed Largent the wave makes his cuts off moving feet I'll tell you someone else that has quickly stir SH leechers not that fast in the open field but he sets up quickly and watch the ball so perfectly thrown and it had to be had to be right on target or it might have been intercepted could not have been caught big play that's the kind of big plays that you come back with so far Ohio State unable to move on the ground which slicer has thrown it well but for a drop the fumble deep in the SC territory Ohio State might be in the lead at this point Rick Valley short yardage is close to midfield by Lee senior from Lynchburg Virginia it'll be second down for the Buckeyes and seventh I think the real difference in this game so far is down on the line of scrimmage and I think it's in the physical superiority of the offensive and defensive front of these SC offensive defensive team you've seen them run the ball effectively Ohio State has not run it effectively they from a little Troma defectively that's been their weakness so far in this game John Lee in motion second and six big hole but short yardage as a token hurry on Calvin Murray Dennis Johnson six for senior who migrated west from Michigan all America honors a ballot this year [Music] three for Ohio State Tim Spencer number 46 comes in from the Buckeye sidelines and Murray goes out Paul Campbell out for arrest is back in for the Buckeyes see coach Hackett talking to Kevin and I think what he's they feed him bad now on the on the bomb I think you'll see running a lot of stop patterns a lot of look that is not I got him respect in the deep Sadie Penn State's in there Spencer the youngsters of the first time all the way to the 39 a high school all-american st. Clairsville Ohio admirers are old Campbell he says and well we've hi do too in the steel city that admires him so much they hope that he has an extended vacation earlier this year we should say a behalf of our colleague OJ Simpson which must been heartwarming for you to look through that Ohio State book and see how many players said they play the admirer stayed on his feet to the 35 yard line that last way not just laughing you sob the one ahead of that where they got in the first down of some anticipation I didn't guess he anticipated to pass a plate pass all the way and they got burned Ohio State Line doing a good job of walking in that last play now you have a chance to do anything you want to go second six by hips the fastest I emotion this way to Calvin Murray ankle struggles to the 31 go to the first and by a long yard there a marui a tight grasp of [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well the key to this game thus far has been a compile state unable to score first and goal from them two and three shots from inside the one as SC's defense with a masterful goal line stand than us he came back after way too fast to hit on the bomb it's 10 nothing SC 5 minutes short yardage play and marine boys USC they say the ball was there [Applause] all dead and Ohio State will maintain possession but Dennis Smith number 49 shot up from the secondary to make that tackle on Murray to stop him far short of the first down even on the tough plays there are some great things happening number 22 volley right there on Dennis Johnson just knocked him clear off the line of scrimmage had it not been for that great play by Dennis Smith you wouldn't have been able to stop him behind that line watch Bali watch this block that's his final block as you'll see that's an all-american linebacker and he's he's got a lot of pounding [Applause] - yard so and its fourth and three Ashley sir pants the first time way 20 [Applause] white lightning has another perception well the big play capability of sleeper taking what looked to be an impossible situation there he was getting pressure got out to the outside a little extra time and not only in isolation here knows how to find the open territory very quick feet and surehand soft hands first down a chance now to get it down nothing USC first down from the 20 [Applause] spencer rather hit hard by Ronnie line after a gain of a couple it will be second down and eight they feel that live will be the next offensive all-american for USC from Pasadena we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network ball game in Pasadena California three and a half minutes remain in the first half USC with a field goal in a long touchdown bomb Williams leads 10 nothing but Ohio State has the ball second down and eight at the 18 of Southern California slay stir the throw incomplete tight end a freshman from Sandusky try to make that fingertip catch kept it away from the defense almost the perfect brownie and very little room in which to fire that one I tell you the way the games gone was the best field position is bacon ham because it's tougher to throw the ball as Marilyn can tell you the closer you get to the endzone they haven't has been successful running the ball down there Cole so a stranger that may sound a bit point on the field for the offense the B is right around the 20 they got good room to throw the ball and and because they've had so much problem running the bar I don't think they want to get first and anything inside the tin I'm sure something's sticking in the back of their minds right now is how tough they headed getting it in a one-yard line USC has called a timeout third and eight Ohio State at the proach an 18-yard line when we come back 319 left first half Ohio State trying to get on the boards to be another exciting college basketball year already has been when Billy Packer a week from Sunday will University Syracuse that it all starts Saturday and Sunday beginning this coming Saturday at three wide receivers ah Hicks not quite enough time Hicks was open deep as he slipped around Jeff Fischer number 40 it appears the Buckeyes will bring on the field goal unit ty Hicks is the fastest man on this Buckeye squad he's working a win with an injured ankle and he actually has him beaten but that delay in getting around a chance at the football settle Dave Lonnie on a kievsky from Columbus Ohio he has set the ohio state records for scoring and in field goals Heisman Trophy balloting and stay still right there with Paul McDonald who finished sixth on a KFC a 35 yard attempt gasps technolo backup quarterback does a good job of saving it I enough long enough in Ohio State has gone on a kiosk II missed only three of 18 all year comes through on his first opportunity today three minutes ten seconds remaining in the first half USC's lead is cut to 10 to 3 [Music] Bob atha tees it up at the 44o high estate Michael Hayes Raymond Butler deep for USC 10 to 3 the Trojans late at 3 minutes left on the ham good kick Butler at the goal line [Applause] nevertheless by the buckeyes number 14 brian's Schwartz's from Simi Valley California nearby 10 3 USC in this Rose Bowl classic elsewhere in this January 1st at the Cotton Bowl that was 1714 Houston beat Nebraska let's look at Glenn Cobb number 35 we talked about headhunters earlier you see him going right over the top of one of the Trojans people give him a chance hitting right in there actually stacking up the wedge it was a slip I think more than anything that stop that stop that run back flag is down and we may have that contact by Tim Sawicki number 68 is he lurtz 40 may have hit one of the SC offensive linemen yes 5 yards against Ohio State first penalty of the game and it's an easy one to Sawicki excited he wants to get a piece of that Center and did unfortunately a little too early well he had to take advantage of that quickness I don't think he really wants too much of a piece of him I think he realized he's being outweighed if he came out quickie he has no chance you know Chris foot was married I guess in this last year and they said it's the biggest wedding they've ever seen because all of the offensive lineman of USC were part of the wedding entourage big rock shiny that backs it and all white to the 24th very important right here for Ohio State's defense to get things stopped take that football away their offense able to move the ball successfully down the field and get some points on the board now they'd like to get a turnover they'd like to stop SC force them to punt right here or even better get a turnover get some points on the board themselves second down and fall it to a short two Allen and fullback white the tailback Kevin Williams flank to the right white stop but I believe he has the first now it's going to be close at the 26-yard line number 65 Keith Ferguson with a tackle speaking of Charles let's look at the Heisman balloting once again are you going to see mr. Billy Sims in Oklahoma on the Orange Bowl that will follow this pelicans two interesting things I see their dick three of the top six college players the country in this game & Schuster's fourth place finish the highest ever for a sophomore Vegas Ferguson Notre Dame in that third spot cutler with Williams in the slot a lot of speed wide writer McDonald Marcus Allen Marcus America my estate made the tackle thick I alluded to the fact earlier that it's tough to play against people who are taller and bigger than you are in that defensive line thing that happens to you is that they get locked up on you and you really can't see where the ball carrier is a guy goes by you you don't know whether he's got the ball or not a lot of times when they're using a dive action with one man carrying the ball of another man coming off the other side you almost have to take the first guy in tackling they did it right there fortunately he didn't have the ball and made some good yardage second and six Mendeley quick started is he short of the first down by yard well let's take it to the other side than OJ it is true then that backs hide behind their blockers and then see that opening and try to put on that extra step that you do try to shield yourself visually yeah that's that's part of the best thing about ever those huge offensive lineman is the defensive back is coming up worrying about that that pulling guard coming I used to love racing with kids it goes in at six four and had a lot of sweet and those people to back the word about him clock running down to 130 left on the hill it's the improving its field position and White has another first down and more pray [Applause] Wiki with an injury they put a man in his place and they came right at I think it was Mark Sullivan in there Marcus merry can a shot at white but what a tremendous play Todd Bell has been abandoned so a new defense watch it right there chop the ball on a white hand pick it up boat I found a nice USC in white a long long game toward a possible added score and with 118 left davits Ohio State with a football trailing the Trojans 10 to 3 Charles why trips off of 45-yard run appeared he may go for a touchdown but Todd Bell not only saved the touchdown with his tackle but turned it over and Ohio State for the football at its 19 [Music] Nantz least we're gonna put it up again incomplete well covered with his intended target we have a [Applause] USA [Applause] the receiver you still cannot bump that receiver before the ball arrives and schuster I think [Applause] Ricky gray moved in to make the interception let's go back to the play made by time you describe it for so he thought the open here the guy to his left that he's trying to outrun he he doesn't even free bill at all the great job of gripping the ball well he went up there he went up there to making fumbles he had rock Charlie behind him a story wrapped up of the 20 Charles essary from Long Beach California is that is a deputy police chief and he he put the shackles on fleece turn it'll be second and 14 Oh Jay that's some kind of speed from Bell to run the white down in the open field and knock that ball out of his hand yes it is because white is had very good speed he's not a track man I think bill has some track 9 7 speed and he was the man who broke Jesse Owens long jump record he can go the big play here second about 1314 yards to go and they're going to play it safe now a time he breaks out of the pack and is out of bounds out at the 34 yard line close to the first down cops o'clock was exactly 30 seconds left in this first half is to quickly summarize for you USC at the best early opportunity on fourth and one inside the Ohio State v they went for it did that Coppola field goal and Ohio State stopped them and eventually Eric Hipple connected on a 41-yard field goal to make it three nothing Ohio State came back in a 53-yard pass play from sliced urdhva Williams had first and goal at the two of SC and SC stopped them on a marvelous goal line stand and then a 53-yard touchdown pass McDonald gave us see attend nothing lead before 35-yard field goal by mana kiev school 30 seconds left place are going long Williams [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I tell you it's gotta be a look Ohio [Applause] a half gone and a half kleavon they'll come out with they should have the momentum coming out Aniki st trying for the 21 seconds left in my head [Applause] receptions averaging 16 emotionally we talk I'm standing [Applause] that going into the washroom we don't give anything chief [Applause] because [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and also give [Applause] great [Applause] and look at it put it on them right there puts on that verse and carries it [Applause] I'll tell you something I know USB strategy I was talking to Marv we wanted it because the coaches he said they want to give him a short stuff we let him run we don't think they can beat us that way the only way they can beat us is with the big play and that's what we're practicing to stop working eighth or the kickoff michael hayes at the gold of the USA at the town [Applause] the festivities of half-time for the Rose Bowl and a reminder after Ohio State in USC decide the outcome of this one later this afternoon wherever you may be it will be the Orange Bowl left pageantry in color Miami Florida as the unbeaten Seminoles of Florida State they con the University of Oklahoma that's a running team against a passing club so it'd be another great match tonight on NBC Marcus Allen drives it out to the 31 yard line and that may be the last play of the half 10 seconds nine seconds USC build a 10 nothing in the second quarter [Applause] safe lane 15 USA halftime at the the curtain guys hen we'll be right back with all the 1980 Buckeyes are tied at 10 at the intermission the Ohio State marching band performs a sensational drum major we'll keep our eyes on Dwight Hudson [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah man this Ohio State committee with this and all of those who worked so hard so famously in the entire presentation of the Tournament of Roses crew game are to be commended is no other January first quite like the one you can spend in Pasadena California [Music] maneuver especially with the two O's a lot of black letters but to make those beautiful lows of something in itself and now thee honored of the sousaphone player was led out to dot the i's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Thank You USC Thank You Ohio State for standing time show [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's 1010 at halftime and this 1980 Rose Bowl game is brought to you by Chrysler Plymouth to invite you to see our 1980 models and come six throws bowl game is tied at halftime USC Ohio State even at 10 Rock Shawnee that's one of the fine plays we saw early SC now a chance to score the ball kicked very well by Eric hip so high he got that football good good start for SC as they put three points on the board that was a 41-yard to make it three nothing and then Ohio State moving the ball well Slee ster looking for a man we'd hear from again later Williams deep downfield finally tackled at the 2 yard line and then USC stopped Ohio State four tries from the two three from inside the won so wards tackle was a saving touchdown later Ward was to have been beaten by Williams and Ohio State I'm USA Ohio State even at 10 from Rock Shawnee that's one of the fine plays we saw early SC now a chance to score the ball kicked very well by Eric hip so high he got that football good good start for SC as they put three points on the board that was a 41-yard to make it three nothing and then Ohio State moving the ball well Slee ster looking for a man we'd hear from again later Williams deep downfield finally tackled at the 2 yard line and then USC stopped Ohio State four tries from the 2-3 from inside the won so wards tackle was a saving touchdown later Ward was to have been beaten by Williams and Ohio State was to score in the final seconds of the half to tie the game at ten what looked to be a short touchdown turned into no point says Ohio State also elected to go for all of the points rather than take the field goal turned away by that brilliant goal line stand but we couldn't ask for anything more 1010 at halftime a beautiful day they've got to teed up and they're ready Ohio State will receive rob kirk kicks it off he is a sidewinder that comes down short at the 20 five into the 30-yard line for Ohio State goes number 57 John Hutchings a junior from Fremont Ohio let's look at the first half statistics and any comment Marlon you might see in those numbers the numbers are amazingly similar effect you looked down the only thing you don't see in those stats is that SC has been able to move the ball consistently and that Ohio State has made their statistics on big plays that's the difference in the first half statistically other than that it's almost identical what are you pointing to OJ Simpson I was just looking at those passing statistic by Ohio State I would think over 100 of those yards came from 120 did run those two the Williams but it is as we pointed out a different Ohio State team that visits the West on this January please sir one of his options and he keeps the ball to the 37 yard line a gain of almost 8 yards Dennis Edwards number 70 led the charge of the Trojans back to the first half we wanted to show you what more of the big plays in the first half just before the half everyone in the house saying well they're going to play it safe or would they go for the ball and right here they got it laid out on the westward they got up what a big turnaround actually almost a 14-point turn around you look at it that made the game that sentiment now they're out here they'd like to get driving down the field they'd like to get another score if they can get one here they really do gain the emotional edge see had the 10 nothing lead in the second quarter and that was also with the gola and stand by the Trojans with Chancellor has his team of town but but just as it appeared he might break loose Joey Brown or The Frisky number 47 makes a hit out at the 41 yard line it is a first on Ohio State you are committing at the intermission Oh J that this guy offers some deja vu as far as your reflection I can't believe it you know back in 1969 my last game against Ohio State we came in the game undefeated with one tie SC does this year Ohio State was number one undefeated they had a sophomore quarterback we would have here 10 to nothing I mean you know it's almost like a carbon copy of that game you get to cardiac arrest over the ball Campbell three out of the 44 Dennis Johnson USC's leading tackler beats in the last three seasons number 56 up off the bottom of the file least are just a sophomore but gentlemen as we watch him the first half you really have to look back do he he carries himself and plays like a senior I tell you I think he's going to change a little tradition at Ohio State when coach Robinson came there scene everyone knew he was a passing coach and we thought we'd lose the tradition of the great tailback he's been able to maintain that but I think the speaker in the back [Applause] it's a first ballot that you the Buckeyes this year was 17-inch least were took the pop in the process we talked about the poise that fall see quarterback watched Easter one of the tests of a quarterback Willie hang on to the ball until the last second he does it right there they paid the price but I think you willingly pay that price for a reception in the first down I need the big strong kid I don't think it worried about it too much you deep deep need to pay any attention to God tackler he watched the ball all the way interesting statistic two minutes into the third quarter saliste are already with 200 yards passing at the se 45 at Scotland motion Murray up the middle the 39 of us see before chip banks can make the tackle missed last year's Rose Bowl game that banks miss Johnson also another plane for the Trojan it looks like a different Ohio State team that had to do nothing but help them as they chanted with Earl Bruce in the intermission I was I was thinking right before they got their last touchdown that going in just seven points down after this worth half after being outplayed would be a lift of it turned out they will the entire real jackpot for the first time second he can motor he bolts all the way to the USC 27 look like the ball was except the sideline somebody SD players saying it shoulda hit it don't reverse there they get into the line of scrimmage least your hands it off to Hicks is going the other way it shows up as heels let's watch and see if that ball is stripped away yesterday to was right there on the sideline the ball kept in the hands of OSU they're down to Buffy 26 yard line 27 yard line driving it on in what I'd love to have this touchdown burgin s East Ohio State the spot boy was the touchdown makers wide right [Music] waster of the middle and with the respect that space tourism or some of those running holes are opening up amazing how a little bit of successful passing will make room for some running and how a little successful running will make room for some passing they really do complement each other on that last way back there in the backfield is wine backing spot looking for somebody to come through there finally picked him out but you can see [Applause] andraia number 69 doing a good job of keeping him off the ball carrier Rickey gray number 35 made attack this man was well-covered rick bali number 22 banks was pressuring maybe a risk drop it at the feet of that receiver we showed you some stats earlier Slater in his rookie year as freshmen here at 21 interceptions and about the same number of touchdown but he had got a few more this year from the running game as well as a faster game but only five interceptions on the year this year and that was the big change in his play maturity ninth play coming up in this opening drive of the second half oh hi O state USC tied in tennis placed her on the caper [Applause] Southern California 70 also into play branch Streelman he stated earlier on that option play they want to force him to keep the ball to trying to rough him up but Ohio State has done something on that drive which all offensive teams try to do a first down you want to get five or six yards you have to thousands of Indians at the tremendous amount of pressure know when to downs that get those four yards and they've they were successful there's a fortunately for SC they stop the drive but this they make this field goal [Applause] [Music] makini it said well Oh [Applause] for to today [Applause] hi-oh state is in the lead four minutes gone in the second half but guys 13 Trojans 10 state leads for the first time in this Rose Bowl 13 to 10 10 minutes 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter and USC about to have offensive possession for the first time in this half he kicked this fireball 26 26 yard line don't forget fans after this one from Pasadena and Oberlin I enjoyed thoroughly our experience last year down Miami at the Orange Bowl and they've got a dandy waiting Florida State unbeaten likes to put the ball in the air against that wishbone attack of the University of Oklahoma Merlin Olsen OJ Simpson Dick Enberg here at the Rose Bowl and we've got nice way of starting 1980 you said it oj not a bad way to start it but a beautiful way to start it we've had all the excitement in the world early in this ball game and it's not over yet SC now said hey you took your first without got three we'll take our get something to taking a right cross across the ring and reducing to go down that was number 65 Keith Ferguson a linebacker Ferguson interesting case he was a starting offensive tackle last year but watch the hit white doing a great job of accelerating right there with the helmet hit the big girl didn't know what hit him momentarily but again the balance demonstrated by that young man is just fantastic second down for Michael Hayes in the backfield in motion simply Marcus Allen he won't drop any like that right about ten years ago you brought now dropped of you believe it what it is at the runner you just want to get running and you're not concentrating on the ball coming to you in the air and you thinking about faking a guy before you get the ball and I'm sure that's what we're going is mine at that time you surprise so far Merlin what's happened here today I think not surprised because I think the emotional factor the little extra that Ohio State has emotionally has give the physical educate has had the emotional way David Williams who has a touchdown is to the left McDonald the other way to Garcia [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just an outstanding play McDonald again showing us his poise a maturity under pressure waits until the last second and that ball couldn't have been another foot further or the ball would not have been caught watch the feet now olden EADS one in had one out but did have one in successful reception first down there 26-yard game at the 43 white goes the other way to the Ohio State Mark Sullivan five nine well he must feel like evil and the Sequoias playing into that offensive line of the University of Southern California we thought the wicked get hurt earlier looked like he hurt his leg a little bit he has not returned to the ballgame and they've put a youngster in there and he's going to have his work cut out for him this is only the second time this year that Southern California has been behind this together at LSU and they rally at bat room to the left Donald and treble [Applause] [Music] guy playing [Applause] he gets backward foot has no chance at the Fran Tarkenton move by McDonnell there but it did pay off he was able to get a hold on someone save on the ground first sack of the game Oh Jade is they lined up Charles white came out to the left almost tentatively as if maybe he thought he should have been to the right it appeared that that that clay got off Portland yeah I think he was close to going motion and set up and McDonald told him at the last minute to set up over there I guess he just missed the call third down and long and McDonald looks long stead go short Allen 1540 [Applause] [Music] 26-yard plate that's a second in this drive you've got to be able to take what the defense gives you McDonald looks deep realizes they're covered and dumps them all off they're just exposing to get a short gain out of that plate but as often happens when you can give a running back the football in the short territory with a defense spread he makes the yard Garcia for 26 yards in the Cigna comes right back and gets 26 yards to Marcus Allen right to the 25-yard line where to be second down and six okay are they still running the same plays now that they ran when you were tailback oh yeah it's basically the same thing John McKay is I was stated earlier you put into twenty eight blast back about eighteen years they're going this through their basic bread butter play and why shouldn't it when you're averaging seven point seven yards to carry on it Raymond Butler far right Kevin Williams is in the slide [Applause] [Music] looking for Williams incomplete well-covered mic guess was helping out short and Skilling's 48 came over to play him deeper dick that was a case where Donald rolling out had all kinds of room and I think if he had been Shuster he would have taken off and run with the football but McDonald is not a running quarterback and loses some dimension because of that another blimp side view of the Rose Bowl she hovers overhead to bring this aerial dues of Rodin's today the spectacle in Pasadena my little side we walked in here hardly anyone in the bowl early this morning after what a sight trying to find Williams but he's covered well by number 27 that brings up 4006 so after first down carry my wife for four yards to M complete passes and now USC will try to tie it up as number 10 Eric hip into the ball game they a long bill go another 47 yarder this would be as longest of the year Merlin he does have a light to do that dick he hasn't you made mentioned early in the game that Ohio State had a superior kicking game and it next was just 42 yards and he's got it on the way it is no good to the left [Applause] kill the other fellow you [Music] [Applause] a football that would be an automatic first down I may have a chance to go for the seven [Applause] is what happened what ship is he gets the kick away he can't rough either kicker war holder and there's the hit right on the back of the legs of Eric if anything there's no play acting there he was knocked down I did it Ben skilling who was coming for all he was worth he was actually blocked in to him but it doesn't matter doesn't matter you first on USC at the Ohio State 12 yard line after the 15-yard penalty here comes white and he charges close to the seven air something you want to look for in a great he gets it generally white will fall forward and that's what a back hug coach is always trying to teach him back you know people talk about his size I've heard people talking about Tony Dorsett side but Tony Dorsett watching me get hit pretty good fans and he's falling forward I see Tony George didn't break his witty tackle to the Earl Campbell or Walter Payton and he's much smaller than those two guys I see white through the same thing our set number one all-time in white number two in NCAA history running the football he only gets a yard that time helping up third down and call it for at the 6 yard line good defensive surge by the Scarlet at about the same point on the field where they made their goal line stand earlier worst MC into a fourth down decision SC went for the 7 instead of the 3 and we're denied I wonder if it gets down to a fourth down what John Robertson no choose to do here well they say hindsight is 20/20 but somehow yet the feeling away they go for the field going win Ohio State and the same position they go to for the field goal that somehow I would move big later on three tight ends in the game Brenner hunter and roshani and Rock Shawnee in motion third and four from McDonald in the end zone is the flag number 85 pair caught the ball at the one is it against the offense or defense in the end zone maybe a blocking philony on the offer if it's against the offense it's a costly foul because it's a turnover [Applause] in the end zone and Ohio State gets the ball at the 20-yard line I don't think they realize it yet what a costly penalty if it's rolled in the end zone and that's where the flag was dropped it's Ohio State's ball at the 20 and that's the signal being given by the referee roll Bruce doesn't realize though that's like finding money now here goes the offensive team onto the field and look at the head look at the excitement along that sideline for Ohio State what a costly penalty that is for s-see as they don't even have a chance [Applause] interference is the most difficult of all penalties in the college game and here is a classic example SC given life by the penalty on the field goal try then as guilty of a push in the endzone which carries an automatic touch back possession to the defending team at the 20 I am out to assimilate the pain of that one for John Robinson it's 13 to 10 Ohio State we have less than six minutes remaining third quarter Florida State Oklahoma to final this one from the Rose Bowl here's that controversial call in the end zone number 80 rock shining I go block and not those people 27 Bareilles barely as he got into the endzone we're scary by Murray gets only two yards want to thank especially now the officiating crew it's a split crew from the pac-10 in Big Ten team Calhoun the referee Duke Corning the umpire Robert Walker the head linesman Jack Roberts aligned Judge Charles feigl the field judge and then in green the back judge because they took time yesterday at length to explain to Marilla Roy South the differences between the rules of professional rules and collegiate rules and this is one of the things mr. calhoune very carefully went through with us and wouldn't you know it that penalty arises today in this game and could be a call that's written and talked about from this day on you can see from the replay Johnny was indeed pushing that defense you disagree on J well it was tough but he did it extended armed which I don't think he can do like Murray trying to catch the ball and that's a tough one because you misjudge the timing of the fashion trying to get it a little quickly and complete one of the things that racer has problems with is the soft path and that's part of the maturity and he has yet to gain he's used to rifling the ball I think he wanted to throw that one AZ surprised the receiver he hunted the zipper he looked at me like he started to run and then at the last minute threw the ball and didn't adjust his feet it looked like he tried to throw it all arm in the wrong direction [Applause] [Music] Ohio State USA 13 five minutes left in the third quarter here he goes chased into the air sidelines pass and a first down Gary Williams Williams who has two long bombs and a flag is down there hammock crew 57 made the hint for us see flag down at the tackle that could be against SC facemask and they'll tack on some more certainly those flags become very that last sequence remember than this field goal by USC but the penalty against the house state for running into the kicker and then s/he loses it back on the offensive interference on the ends on it now 15 yards for face moon dick if we go back and see that play right at the line of scrimmage SC was having a lot of trouble they're gonna mark off 215 that's a personal foul 15 yards quickly let's look at it s see if flip-flops the defense and they were they had to finish clip-clop clapping you saw left I tried to get over this side there were some confusion as the width the strength of it where the strength of the defense was and I watched the facemask right there yes I am tackling with the mask on what fine line nice pass by sleepster again he has thrown the ball consistently all day there it is double hand in the mask I'm a grill with a bulldog tackle in 15 yards takes it to the 47 of Ohio State brought a marine read well by a sea tackle forward to the 50 [Music] 9650 seven McGrew on the tackle we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network go for all of the family weekdays at 5:30 Dick Enberg Berlin Olson OJ Simpson from Pasadena's rolls bol the USC Trojans jumped into the ten nothing lead into the second quarter Ohio State tied it at 1010 on a remarkable turnaround as it appeared the trouser I was going to go for a long time Ohio State got the long pass bomb away in the final seconds of the half - tied at 1010 a field goal by Ohio State here in the third in its first lead of the game and now an unusual offensive interference call in the end zone has cost us e the ball in 2sc territory at the 47-yard line looks at third down and three surely don't want to lose your poise and right now some of the SD players look like they're a little bit out there you see that - okay yeah you know they got everything going against them now and they all [Music] [Applause] reverse to tie Hicks but he doesn't make it hit [Applause] [Music] the superb lateral pursuit talent of that SC deepens laughs good six four and two forty-five running right with those little bags you know it's unusual normally when you beat the team up front and I I think SC on both lines is still beating Ohio State are you winning a football game but Ohio State is if there's a such thing as out out a thematic bet they're athletes on their team specialist for guys in the defensive secondary and of course the quarterbacks Leisha are making the big plays for Ohio State so right now the difference in the game is I think Ohio State is showing a little better athletic ability in the school position Morrison to Pawnee only the 46-yard it's that one well tour crafted in a donut hole that big old Ohio first down USC at the 20-yard line timeout with two minutes 33 seconds remaining in water the Buckeyes leave the Trojans 13:10 possible national title at station Sunday in Pittsburgh hope you'll join us first time USC at the 20-yard line [Applause] excellent second-ever snapped into 20 and ducked into the 23 yard line before the games today there was a split vote the AP had ohio state 1 alabama 2 SC 3 and you'll see florida state Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl UPI at Bama and top Bama has defeated Arkansas then USA Ohio State and Florida State Oklahoma so there's going to be some interesting choices made after this one one against Arkansas Houston beat Nebraska [Music] [Applause] what a pass by my final living this can throw that swing pass any better okay you dick that's the toughest pass to throw for a quarterback and it's a tough pass to Georgia to have back and he put a right bone that was very nice that's just a dark to white he also has time to work back there he could've gone deep if he wanted to but I think he wanted to spread that defense and give it to the best runner on the field Charles Wright with the whitening what to do with it got the first down freshman Marcus Marek chased on white first down at the USC 31 42:10 Ohio State from behind and trap for a loss by Mark Sullivan 97 again he's only 5 9 4 12 he's dwarfed by that huge offensive line but he's made two big plays for losses he is a prototype Middleton big 10th victim nose guard though small and chalky he gets underneath those blocks watching there they're trying to hook him with the center foot 62 he just split out of there showed fine speed I hate running against Charles white leaps out there got his hands on White Street tripped him up loss on the play long kevin williams audio picture to the left [Music] Garcia to the left and looking for Garcia McDonald fires hand [Applause] high school except by one school Linfield College of Oregon we went to junior college was the JC reception later and then to USC recruited out of cause he was current real well on that play buddy a markup a Brooke receiver was slamming when he see his quarterback is in trouble and he came back to the quarterback scramble a little bit caught the pass and did a fine job of running after he got well let's give Marcus Allison credit had he not kept a linebacker laughlin away from the quarterback he woulda had time to throw [Music] and he gets the handoff straight ahead to the 37 yard line Allen has done so well and this is really first full year at fullback that some of the talks about him taking over for White's job at tailback as a diamond almost like to keep you right at fullback the way you block and carry the ball from that position well I think they'll recall a man named Ricky bill who played fullback for for Anthony Davis one year and hit me back the tailback and did all right all right is the understatement the end of the third quarter of this Rose Bowl classic and the Ohio State Buckeyes are in Philly the score as we go to the fourth period but guys 13 Trojans 10 NBC in the United States Olympic Committee also would like to remind you that the US JC's need 50,000 volunteers to help on Olympic gold medal day that's April 26 we'll give you more information after this play by McDonald its second down and six he's caught from behind rips his way free and complexity' white [Applause] Ohio State that'll bring up third down and eight the date again is April 26th the JC's 850 thousand volunteers to help on that Olympic gold medal day if you want to help our Olympic team get ready for Moscow check with your local JC's office tomorrow join the team April 26 check before that last play SC had thrown 16 passes and rushed 36 times they're trying to get a mix of 60% run at 40% [Applause] today I think because of the aggressiveness of this Ohio State deeply beg third and eighth and that's Michael Hayes in motion good protection he's going deep [Music] [Applause] sometimes it pays to be tall Mobe Brenner's six-foot-five and ray Ellis jumped for the interception jump to try and knock it away he couldn't reach that football Brenner good first down big big play see sustains its drive for the first time at the Ohio State 24 early fourth quarter Buckeyes lead 1310 three tight ends in for USC essentially a tiny here comes white behind ruck sunny tripped up at the 21 yard line quite a gain of three unofficially now with a hundred and forty-three yards rushing today well they say the great ones they perform at their best in the big games and can happen hundred yards was his average this year he rushed this year for more than a mile and he's now over six thousand yards in his career I think the thing that's impressive about his career is his durability the fact that he has rushed over one hundred times in his four years that's remarkable balloonist a few quarters issue early in the year but so cool McDonagh looking into the end zone was open that LS 27 did get a handout it appeared the pass was deflected Alice got his fingers on the ball I'll tell you ill as Ellis was playing that all the way it's it appeared to me and I don't think McDonald saw him coming to cross he looked like he was pacing himself across they're waiting for him to throw the ball and was going to try to go and pick it off I think McDonald was so sure that Ellis was not going to be there oj he threw it anyway yeah I don't think he saw him and he Ellis really I don't think it was a big event got the ball he just missed the ball Ellis big looked like he had the ball intercept he did have a piece of end deflected at behind Garcia so it's now third down again third and seven from the 21 that's white in motion and McDonald rolls this way looking for Kevin Williams know this man Falls Garcia Danny Garcia as he made his cut to the inside fell on the grass and its fourth and seven and here comes Eric hip for the field goal tried I think the past is behind Garcia though even before he falls the ball was thrown badly he's trying to stop and go back to where it so had that ball been thrown accurately would probably have been Conklin is close to the first down the apart McDonald didn't set up normally you'll get outside set up and throw on that time he tried to throw in a run and I think it drew his hip is connected from 41 yards missed from 42 but that was the penalty play this one will be 39 yards [Applause] and know the 10 on hips back symbolic USC stays at that number and Ohio State retains the lead 13 minutes left here in Pasadena 1980 sees a high o state through three quarters plus still in the lead 13 for the Bucks 10 for the Trojans potential tying field goal watch his reaction Monica Epps key is kicked too for Ohio State and the Buckeyes lead 1310 leycester hits [Applause] we started Emily and the guys are hitting big through the [Applause] sideline you can see the pumping down their watch the play now they get godly isolated on the sidelines that sprog is 81 peeling off on him he's going to be one of the late people there but the play is right there they catch it early a good block thrown now watch this great move that he puts on lock right there got him to turn around at 47 Joey browner coming with a lot of speed to run him down Calvin Murray on first down darts inside the 15th of a and that'll be second down and short three for Ohio State when we talk about seeing a different in representative here really amazing to me how many Big Ten team would have come out after that missed field going tried to control the ball but check that three-point lead the different Ohio State you don't think girl Bruce is excited who won stand along that sideline he is boy he has pumped up and he's shown that emotion all through the workouts in preparation for this game leycester has 270 yards passing on 10 completions at the 27 yard average Campbell to the ten lurches forward to the first down at the 10 so it's going to be first in bowl Ohio State the longest possible distance on first and goal while we were talking about her offers I think at the part that we pay credit to him his first year of transition for our coach he has taken a team that was not it was not expected to do well he's brought them here they're in the lead they're driving right now and also important that we complement another man who's not here woody hey this is really what he's seen he recruited them and Earl Bruce has done a magnificent job of bringing them to where they are today but what he deserves some credit too absolutely and Bruce will be the first one to tell you weren't for his I wouldn't be here because I woulda quit school at a knee injury as a sophomore went home and what he says you get back here even if you can't play football get your education leycester looking for six and he gets three three Colton [Applause] second sack for the trojan big [Applause] don't get greedy come to me those are ten yards that hurt awfully tough down there least there's a wisely did not throw the ball away and he did not have any time excellent cast rice right there I guess that's the wise choice if you can't unload it get out of the end zone take the lawn push me down here clothes wiring lamp at an excellent pass rush the guy tried to cut him he stepped over but kept the heat on banks lap and Edwards all in on the play so it's second down and from the 21 year ix pushing he's the fastest of the Buckeye they brought Maria strap [Applause] freshmen strangely enough when they had that right before the ball was snapped I was pink there around the 25 there really a better passage by SC it looked like all the emotional enthusiasm was on the side of the Ohio State players they got the big play to Donnelly got it down in great position and got another 1st down at the 10 and now they've moved the ball back about 16 yards they're going to wrong direction right today all ohio state needs a lot of feel incredible when it hit when they need a lot of yard they make the big play they've got it now third and goal from the 26 dumps it off to Murray 25 looking for blockers 20 [Applause] catching the pass and Crossfield running by Murray gets into the 7 where it's fourth and goal well the plays are called by head coach Earl Bruce he called a smart one here I think he was looking for enough GRT to get a field goal up he got more than that Murray did an incredible job of breaking tackles Joey browner there the last guy to get ahold of him otherwise he might have been in endzone from ground level you see Slater the quick pop to Murray gets him in the open field and Murray shows that he likes it out there where he can play with those thankless five men hit him before they finally dragged him down and now on a Kiev ski to try a 24 yard field goal Ohio State has three more KFC's third field goal of the game he's he all time state history as a senior punctuating that title today near Pasadena Ohio State now the USA 16 [Music] 16 to 10 Ohio State Lee its USC with 942 left Nathan will pick it off Nakia set a new Rose Bowl record with three field goals skips it down to Michael Hayes at the 1 yard line for USA's [Music] [Applause] NBC preps of gold AAT the glamour pageantry the 1980 Orange Bowl from Miami featuring number four ranked Florida State Seminoles and the fifth rated Sooners of Oklahoma tricky John Brodie standing behind you to pull my a me [Applause] the Orange Bowl [Music] white there's a tackle by 15 Alvin Washington the junior from Cleveland actually the blocker in Washington did not allow white any room to run he got some penetration and Marcus Allen was blocking him I think at the last minute Charles White wanted to break it outside and got a little tangle up there but what amazed me Merrill if Maryland is early in the game I mean before the game really who said that difference in this game may come down to the special teams and that is exactly what attack event is born not tomorrow so the three field goals we don't want to get the on of Kiev skis man as with rowdy on a Kiev ski that has the three field goals and the Rose Bowl record McDonald wide open Raymond Butler he's to the Ohio State Court he falls [Applause] has a penchant for that sort of thing this year they fumbled 37 times but recovered 22 of their fumbles and here it is again for a forward gain on the phone let's going all kinds of room for Butler watch the hit right here that's drifting that's killing 48 really put the hit on him to rock Shani right there to take advantage of it bill almost in the same position the ball bounced up ooh Mike gets that a chance at it Raksha a very quick hands saved the pump his first time USC at the 41 sixteen to ten eight and a half minutes left fourth quarter with the Zap action donal the white he has a first down at the trojan have to do to feed it you've got a slant you've got a loop you got a son you don't want to do you don't want to leave Charles White any room with first down 29 of Ohio State Allen and white stacked up on the panel Kevin the pitch the white threats his way to the 24-yard loan he is a defiant runner they say a good runner you have to run with a home reckless abandon can't worry about getting hurt that I can see personifies that for that any bank I've ever seen he throws jump he is little it six feet tall if he's that and why did he die but when you sit his torso is that little looks like somebody took the skin apart and put metal in there for muscles he is golden as well as any man would ever want to he's a strong man of 180 second and five looking incomplete Danny Garcia he went for the cats at the 13 yard good defense by Ohio State Vence killings with a hip sue brihat that was one case of Paul McDonald going for the almost the whole loaf that time he had two guys I think he could have gotten the first down with the most unusual angle from the blimp as you watch that pass from McDonald almost shot down on about the 12 yard line the Ohio State defense is over shifting just after McDonald makes his audible and I think it's causing in some problems there let him call his audible in there shifting at the last second look watch the see if they do it again third [Music] [Applause] white emotional all pumps [Applause] incomplete almost intercepted my 28 Bob Murphy the Santa Ynez California he saw his dream through he's from this part of the country at a chance for the deflection interception caught him out astride John Robinson interesting choice to make down about the 24 yard line he's got to choose whether to go for it or bring a field goal kicker and I think he's going to try and get the first down here Derick Kip has missed a couple this would have be a 42-yard attempt so he's going to go for it on fourth and five play was seven minutes [Applause] crowd comes towards me McDonald going for Garcia incomplete my player for a moment mr. Ellis went right into the crowd the pass was out of the field of play and the Buckeyes have the ball back as USC stalls on fourth and five at the Ohio State 24 you see why coaches get gray hair it does say it all seven minutes left and eternity for both 1610 the score it's Ohio State's fall when we return when is your big game Ohio State leads USC 16 to 10 the Buckeyes who stopped the Trojans at the Ohio 24 see how stays to announce they will play it will they stay on the ground over Solis there keep it open the middle goes Murray shot out of a cannon all the way to the 47 [Applause] but if you look at all their tail backs and you take their statistics together they're all averaging over five yards to carry real nice holy pops to the a does what you like your backs to do when he sees an open e just takes off breaks a tackle of two he's not a very big guy the acceleration is seem to be his main thing first on Ohio state near midfield an injury to Murray they're attending to the Fallen Buckeye timeout 654 left Ohio State 16 SC 10 Dick Enberg Merlin Olsen OJ Simpson at the Rose Bowl the clock winding down 654 left the underdog Ohio State Buckeyes lead at 16 to 10 and have a first down at the 47 where he left the field under his own power he's been replaced by this man 46 Tim Spencer who drives at SC Territory to the 48 yard line Dennis Johnson with a tackle Marie has been bothered by him point entry all season hall we don't know that was the case on that last play he's at a a big day 78 yards the leading rusher all season long just 1 yard under 800 I think he was bothered by a hit by Jeff Banks number 51 to the ground he got his bell rung you see them talking to him he's not back yet second down and six Alabama won her [Applause] Houston beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl getting on contrast to that same style play with white tearing it well I think it f us city you're taught our to run to place so many times you really with you really know when to turn it up how long that plan that come back me have been able to turn it up right away the outside linebackers sprung it out real well the USC and I think he should have turn it up who would have for success key to turn up right away six left to go third down a big dirt down here Ohio State I'd like to control the football if they can if they can keep this drive alive they may well be able to wipe out that time on the clock and Ohio State is elected to call a timeout Slee ster visiting with his head coach or old Bruce six minutes six seconds remain Ohio State leads to 16 to 10 [Music] typing will never be the same 100 5526 at the Rose Bowl today underdog Ohio State rally from attend nothing deficit at the half attend take the lead of the pair of field goals in the second half at 16 to 10 but guys with a ball the USC 57 under pressure they've gotten for a second at the 40 Thanks 51 [Applause] 33 yards passing Cadiz well surpass that he's trapped by the Blitz here Jim banks 51 coming from the backside it looked like there was room to step up into they ended the pocket a little bit if he had done that he might have had time to get that pass off Morris after that sack by Southern California will have to kick it he'll hit it about the 33 Raymond punter stands at the USC 13 [Music] Butler fair catch at the 17-yard line good fight on that one too hung up there and but I could see too many red shirts he wasn't going to run it back certainly want to thank all of those that have made our job so pleasant today and the big people [Applause] [Applause] Fred Hardcastle was the present this year body must have been Rose Bolin Davis all CC ol blue eyes grand marshal forty years he's made us all happy Charlie white [Applause] [Applause] 23 blast that's the old French butter flynn at 23 West blah blah number five the Vedas their MVP that's the reason he's there anything they played all year that was a hustle play first down at the 49 of us see it's white again 45 40 play big in the important we're doing it for USA of the Ohio you could have asked for a better script to the belly of this game within one point if they get this touchdown in and they could go ahead and take [Applause] late shift again by OSU's defense Michael Hayes in for the tired white and he gets a good game 4:17 [Applause] [Music] shifting laid up at Donald that time McDonald came back with another audible I think he hit the open spot and got a big game gentlemen trows lake has set a new Rose Bowl record 215 yards rushing breaks the record set by Bob Jeter the Iowa star as he ran against in 1959 215 for white Marcus Allen drives to what appears to be a first down at the 12 yard line it is first time USA with 347 left [Applause] [Music] our two teams have done an incredible everything and it great 40 on the clock there was an 11 yards of the goal line Ohio State's defense knows what is expected of them s he needs the touchdown to win and the game we need the touchdown to go ahead don't forget our twister zone that Ohio Street food crowds right back in the game and he drives to the but guys nearly four second down along six a contemplative role Bruce 48 hero head man of the Buckeyes Robinson five year contract stuff in his back pocket but right now he's interested in that scoreboard and what's happening in front of him is the hundred five thousand plus here in the stadium Rajani and most [Applause] white off right tackle and clouds inside the five [Applause] as they spot the ball at the 4-yard line third and call it two and a half we don't win for down or country down you know SP is not getting very it's too bitter to 26 25 seconds left to go in the game they've done the score with less than a minute ago without getting a touchdown well they've had a picture of fumbling the ball down the last few years so I think they picked the touchdown now if they can get it there are down to white to the goal [Applause] USC on the what line [Applause] we talked about the physical scenario the line of scrimmage you see great second effort from Carol first and goal [Applause] give us a LaLanne is running white [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right u.s. [Applause] Eric hip is happy that habit they got this team ahead a couple of field goals today it's up [Applause] thirty-two thirty two remaining cephalonia seventeen the state 16 USA 17 Ohio State 16 Rob Kerr to kick it off the time remaining 132 Ohio State has two timeouts left they need only a field goal to win good kick take it there and the touchback of the 20 I've spearheaded by the charges of Heisman winter white they went 83 yards and eight plays white took the ball six of those eight plays for 71 of the 83 yards ever he capitalized his Heisman ability he showed it on that dry but now it's arts lease Thursday we see a dick you control great back through much of the ballgame but somewhere he's going to and hurt you Charles white did it when it had to be done hexxus pd man is stays looking for him incomplete at the 30 it's second and ten there's time for Ohio State they don't need the big bomb they just need to move the ball downfield and within on a Kiev skis range let's just check what that is his longest ever was this year 51 yards but he has improved during the course of the year in his distance and it practices him from outside the 60 [Music] Charles white 200 yards plus Oh he looks as if he's played a tattered gladiator is that a classic pose what a game is that today [Applause] plaister under pressure how did he get that off it's incomplete intended for Gary
