Imagine if Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw did this today. That would be crazy.

this is Vin Scully along with ray Scott ready to bring you all the action of the seventh and deciding game of the 1965 World Series this game is being sent to away by the Gillette safety razor company and Chrysler Corporation who also bring you exclusively on NBC such outstanding sports events as the all-star baseball game NCAA football and the 1966 Rose Bowl game to say thank you for using their product this game is authorized on the television rights granted by the Commissioner of baseball solely for the entertainment of our audience and any publication reproduction or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the Commissioner is prohibited any commercial or other use of the program such as by charging admission for a choice is similarly prohibited unless authorized in writing by the commissioner Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington Minnesota the scene of the final game of the 1965 World Series to refresh your memory the dimensions 344 down the left-field line falling away to 365 in left-center 430 to dead centers the symmetrical ballpark as far as the power alleys are concerned it goes to 365 in right-center and then down the right-field line favoring a left-hand hat about 10 feet 330 the field is in excellent condition Marine Corps color guard assuming air places in centerfield Bloomington Minnesota in the nearby area hit by an electrical storm early this morning in the wee small hours it poured in Minnesota but it gave way to bright blue skies and it looks like weather will not be a problem the big guessing game is over and the Koufax is the Dodger pitcher Jim high for Minnesota Bay and defined out manager Walter Alston reasoning and if why he decided on Koufax here's what the manager had to say first of all I think this is the toughest decision I've had to make all year and the choice between Drysdale on Koufax I finally decided on Koufax for the simple reason I think that this club the twins are a little more susceptible to the left-handed pitching and the are right-handed and the fact that I've got Drysdale in the bullpen if they put their left to her their right hand hitters in there and I do have to make his switch I've made them commit themselves again to go to the left hand side and I still got perranoski ready to go in case they make the second switch you are looking now at the Dodger bullpen contingent that also the big left-hander Jimmy Caan 18 game winner in the American League and Cod is one and one in this 1965 World Series for the 18th time in 62 World Series we go to a seventh game and to refresh your memory on some of the highlights of yesterday's game here's a videotape replay here is Earl battey hitting the ground ball to tracewski it is kicked for an error battey is aboard no score at the time if you remember it was in the fourth inning with nobody out with jim grant and Claude Osteen and here was Bob Allison with the count no balls and two strikes hosteen later said his spikes caught in the dirt and caused him to make this pitch and it was hit out 375 feet into the left-center field seats and the twins were off and running two to nothing how he read was now the relief pitcher it was the sixth inning with two on and Jim grant the batter and grant did it up into the seats to make it five to nothing Minnesota Jim became the first American league pitcher hit a home run in the World Series since Jim Bagby did it for Cleveland against the Brooklyn Dodgers 45 years ago Lou Burdette who wears 33 when he played homered against the Yankees in 1958 grant was almost overpowering the one time he was not was to Ron fairly and this was the only Dodger run it went out at about 400 feet into the twins bullpen but that was yesterday and this is the big one today and let's take a look at those fellows whose names are printed boldly on the Dodger lineup tithe shortstop Maury wills opening it up Jim Gilliam at third base there are no surprises today for either team Willie Davis in Satterfield hitting third Lou Johnson in the cleanup spot as he always is against left-handers Ron fairly hitting curve West Parker at first base dick tracewski playing for the injured Jim lefeber who tried to make it today but couldn't do it the catcher Johnny Roseboro and the pitcher Sandy Koufax this 7th game of the 1965 World Series being brought to you from Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington Minnesota for the seventh game of the 1965 World Series to give you the Minnesota line oh and the first four and a half innings of the game the voice of the Minnesota Twins here's ray Scott thank you Vin Scully the lineup today for the twins at shortstop Lloyd oversized in centerfield Joe nossek in right field Tony Oliva batting fourth and playing third Harmon Killebrew batting fifth is the catcher Earl battey Bob Allison will be in left field Don Mincher bats seven and plays at first the second baseman in the number 8 spot is Frank Quilici and the pitcher with a record of 18 wins and 11 losses in World Series play 1 & 1 left-hander Jim kaat we asked Jim about pitching on just two days rest and this is what he had to say I feel that the amount of rest between starts can have a little to do with a pitchers rhythm but not quite as much as his natural stuff there some days you can go out there with a week's rest and have real good stuff in other days you can come back with the 10 days rest and not have anything at all as for the importance of the ball game every pitcher I think looks forward to a challenge of this sort and I'm certainly looking forward to it so said twins left-hander Jim kaat just a short while ago the umpiring assignments today we'll find Edie Hurley of the American League behind the plate as he was for the first game of the series at first base it will be Tony Venzon John Flaherty is at 2nd ed sudol at 3rd on the lines on the left-field line Bob Stewart on the right-field line ed Vargo the temperature is 60 degrees the wind today is out of the Northwest at 9 miles an hour so it should have no bearing at all on anything hit into the air and we are indeed very happy all of us that the weatherman's forecast of about 36 hours ago was wrong and his latest forecast apparently will hold true no rain let's review the World Series briefly the twins won the opener by a score of 8 to 2 the second one 5 to 1 the two games the first two played here at this metropolitan stadium and then to Los Angeles where the Angels won 4-2 nothing behind Osteen 72 with Drysdale and today's pitchers work that game it was won by the Dodgers 7 to nothing Koufax the winner and kaat the loser you can always find a lot of unusual things in a World Series yesterday Jim grant for example became the first pitcher to win two games in the series as he won the game 5 to 1 and has been reviewed for you a moment ago became the first American League Pitcher did a home run in a World Series in 45 years but there other interesting facets just as well we'll tell you about them in a moment right now we pause briefly for station identification the twins take the field before this highly partisan Quinn crowd defensively the Twins will have at first base today Don Mincher at second base Frank Quilici and at shortstop soil over science Harmon Killebrew at third Bob Allison in left Joe nossek in center Tony Oliva in right Earl battey will catch Jim kaat has yet to make his appearance the coaches Danny Ozark at first for the Dodgers and Preston Gomez is at third six games have been played and six games have been won or lost by the starting pitcher every winning pitcher in this series went the distance no relief pitcher has been involved in a decision winning or losing the Dodger leadoff batter is Maury wills he has had a great series he has 11 hits in 26 at-bats he has knocked in three runs he has stolen three bases in the regular season wills at 286 knocked in 33 run then we asked Maury welders captain to reflect the spirit and the feelings of the Dodgers on the seven-game here's what he said when Tommy Davis broke his leg in May we knew that it would be a tough season the hit for us we had to scratch for everything regardless of how the game comes out today I feel that every player on the club should be proud of the season that we have had Jim kaat tried to throw a slider several years ago and decided that as a result of throwing the slider that his curveball was less effective but then he went back to using the slider and now regards it as one of his most effective pitches kaat was a winner over the Dodgers and Sandy Koufax here at Metropolitan Stadium a loser to the Dodgers and Koufax at Dodger Stadium and saw the days of pitchers have identical World Series records in 1965 one win one loss Mauri will against the same sort of an inner defense by the twins up at first and third ball one inside and low wills with 11 hits as a World Series record of most hits in a seven-game series within reach ball 2 as yesterday manager Sam Mele has back up pitching ready from the outset as kaat starts the game merritt and klippstein working the bullpen one most hits in a seven-game series by Bobby Richardson of the Yankees as we look at the twins bullpen merritt the left-hander klippstein the right-hander foul away 2 & 2 Bobby Richardson had as the world series record of 13 hits in a seven-game series 2 & 2 to the Dodger leadoff batter Maury wills with Jim Gilliam on deck and Willie Davis below deck cut gets a strikeout with the fastball when kaat defeated the Dodgers five to one on a 7 hitter he walked one and struck out three and hit a batter second time around against the Dodgers he went just two and a third innings and gave up four runs on six hits here's Gilliam four hits in the series and there's number five Bob Allison grabs it in left and Gilliam has the first hit of the seventh game the center fielder Willie Davis comes to the plate not afraid Benefield shits in serious boy favor whereas Gilliam hit to 80 in the regular season famous hit 238 the Dodger centerfielder Mike will has stolen three bases in the series flow curve strike one Mincher holding with Jillian Killebrew at the edge of the grass at third outfield shaded a bit to the right looks at second rather and as Gillian is in a second Davis is on Quilici took the throw it first batting third so a doubter runner at second with two down here is the left fielder Lou Johnson he is knocked in three runs in the series and has collected seven hits no score Dodger first-inning Gilliam on second two out makes the catch and holds on to the ball so at the end of the first half inning the score the Dodgers nothing the twins coming back the Dodger defense West Parker at first dick tracewski at second Mary wills the shortstop Jim Gilliam at third Lou Johnson is the left fielder Willie Davison Center Ron Carolee is in right John Roseboro is the Dodger catcher and on the mound one on one in World Series play for 1965 Sandy Koufax the twin coaches Jim lemon at first Billy Martin a third leading off for the twins soil overseas seven hits in the series four runs batted in he has a home run to his credit he knocked in all four runs in the first game of the series Koufax bested kaat seven to nothing on a four-hitter Monday in Los Angeles walked one and struck out 10 one and one for Saez Nasik and Oliva the first three in the cleanse fighting order ball two two and one no score as the twins back in the first inning fall back 2 & 2 Gilliam has been playing about a step in front of third with a 2-2 count the third baseman retreats as does first baseman West Parker Dodger outfield shaded to the left examinations the ball by head early another foul back my god one away fighting if you're interested as I am and how Koufax has done pitching on two days rest at the end of September he had a two day break worked on October 2nd he allowed one run struck out 12 walked four allowed only four hits and that was against the Braves and he was a winner here's the centerfielder Joe nossek does not get the fastball strike one Nasik 4 for 16 in the series the twins centerfielder fouled back strike two here in Bloomington Minnesota but through a bit of a haze right now breaking ball low ball 1 1 & 2 in a line of incidental information metropolitan stadium is located equidistant between downtown Minneapolis and downtown st. Paul ball two we'll the shortstop out two down we asked Johnny Ronnie bird catches Sandy Koufax white we should look for today here's what he said if because Koufax is right if he teaches pitches down I don't think we'll have any trouble I think the mound here in this park is a big factor with our ballclub I mean our ballclub has been keeping the ball high because of the flat mound I know at home that they sort of tailored the mound for our pitchers needs which is a sharp breaking mom which helps him keep the ball down on Sandy's problem when he has problems is that he gets the ball up and if you see the ball again above the waist with Sandy you know that he's in trouble and they'll start throwing this big curve ball the curve is into oliva four called strike one Oliva five hits in the series including a homer first inning twins batting with two out none on no score fouled away strike two Killebrew in the on-deck-circle chatting with Oliva Killebrew incidentally said before one of the games of the series that Koufax was scheduled to pitch that after having seen Koufax one time Morrow Koufax had about the best curveball he had ever seen from a left-hander hi and inside ball one all too what a long or the second day running Oliva is not wearing the glove on the right hand trying to recall I don't think he's thrown about yet in World Series play 3 & 2 Olivo will undergo surgery for the I think it's the right term removal of a bone ship the middle finger of his right hand shortly after the end of the series while back the reason for the applause a gentleman with a fishnet ala earl Gillespie caught the foul ball I think girl was one of the first of the broadcaster's to popularize the grabbing of foul balls and Harry Caray that's the third walk in the series by Koufax one in each of his three starts there is Killebrew five hits 18 at-bats in the series including a homer for one to a field is deep down to the left ball three Killebrew has a look at third-base coach Billy Martin during the regular season more times than not a Killebrew was not given the take sign in a similar situation in regular season play Koufax was the number-one workers 336 innings and they give you an idea as to his remarkable control and ratio of walks versus strikeouts 71 walks versus 382 strikeouts Don Drysdale starts to heat up in the Dodger bullpen Earl battey comes to the plate Earl has had three hits in 21 at-bats including what will ordinarily have been a single but a ball which skipped away from Dodger outfielders yesterday and went for a triple two on two-out first inning no score Dodger outfield is straightaway strike Oliva is on second little bruise on first strike two all outside Koufax struck out Versailles swinging got nossek on a bounder to short and has walked Oliva and Killebrew so the twins are retired and at the end of the first inning the score is the Dodgers nothing and the twins nothing we asked Ron fairly his thoughts aspire to the seventh game of the World Series here's what he says we're playing in a World Series is certainly a tremendous thrill for anyone and now that we're in the seventh ballgame I can look back over the season and say that both clubs have had great years and regardless of the outcome of the series I I know that personally I'm endlessly proud of this ballclub we've got a bunch of great men on this ballclub and it's certainly a pleasure playing with her as far gem cot is concerned he's a fine pitcher he's capable of getting you out with with ease although this year I'd have to say that in this series that I'm going to go up there and battle him and give him a hundred percent they're an awful lot off days coming up after today Ron fairly taking ball one low and outside Fairley's had an outstanding series 10 for 25 and my arithmetic tells me that's a 400 batting average ball two he also is the leader in runs batted in with six in this series the Dodger right fielder Ron fairly no score as the Dodgers bat in the second fairly to be followed by Parker and for Zeus key check swing foul away ball two strike one this 1965 World Series game is being brought to you live and in color exclusively on NBC slicing foul - and - then may I ask you something concerning Don dry soil who is warming up in the first inning is he a fellow who can get ready in a hurry yes ray the pattern of Koufax and Drysdale are as completely different as the fact that they're left-handed and right-handed Koufax has trouble in the early innings Drysdale has trouble in the late innings when he tired Earl battey looking for runaway Wes Parker comes to the plate the Dodger first baseman I was just thinking a little while ago and I'm sure that many of you fans have thought about it too two teams are in the seventh game of a World Series and both of them were almost unanimously ignored as far as any of the experts were concerned in picking probable pennant winners in 65 and not only that both came off sixth place finishes in 1964 so whatever the outcome of the seventh game these teams have done much better than their greatest fans thought they would Don Mincher chasing the foul pop-up to down there is no score here in the top half of the second inning with two out and none on here is dick tracewski the Dodgers second baseman has collected two hits in the series Paola third the twins pitcher Jim kaat is a broadcaster and not just as a hobby professionally all one Jim works in an area radio station my area I mean of the suburban Twin Cities and not only broadcast forth but he also broadcast news doesn't you disc jockey shows so at the end of an inning and a half the score is the Dodgers nothing and the twins nothing on the general subject of baseball I thought we'd like to pass along that concerns the attendance records American cities that boasts the abuse stadia made possible through baseball the Commissioner of baseball all those connected with the game salute the young men of the country who played the game and all of those folks who make it possible for them to play Bob Allison fouling off the first pitch here in the last of the second Allison has two hits in the series one was a big one a two-run homer yesterday that put the twins ahead two to nothing check swing foul away strike two Alison will be followed by Don Mincher and Frank Quilici and all the way the total paid attendance in the series so far three hundred thirteen thousand seven hundred and thirty struck him out strikeout number three for Koufax and with one down in the twins backing up the first baseman Don Mincher comes to the plate mentions had three hits including a homer strike wide of third Gillian Will's Johnson giving chase but it's just beyond the reach strike two only very light shadows are being cast right now the overcast bit heavier than it wasn't started to me Mincher waiting on the change-up fouls it back strike two just below the knees one and two fastball high two two like three that's four strikeouts now for Koufax three in a row batter is Quilici every hit 17 trips last of the second two out none on no score hop up Maury wills calling one two three inning so at the end of the second inning the score is the Dodgers nothing and the twins nothing the dual of left-handers here in the seventh game of the series the Dodgers had a mild threat in the first inning with two out and a runner on the second I knew Johnson's flyball into shallow right was gathered in by Oliva on a tumbling catch to choke off that threat Koufax walked to twins in the first inning with two out but struck out battey to choke off that twin scoring opportunity and for the Dodgers its catcher Jon Roseboro leading off the third inning to be followed by Koufax the pitcher and Will's the shortstop roseboro's had five hits in the series he's knocked in three runs Alima fair ball rose girl trying for two and the throw cut off a leadoff double in the third inning by Roseboro by Axl hit number two off cut and the pitcher Koufax comes to the plate Koufax in the series has a base hit one hit in six at-bats he knocked in a run with it Quinn's immediately set the defense for the bonnet Mincher in tight at first Killebrew will try to anchor a third if possible fouled back for strike one ha has been rated since coming to the big leagues is one of the very best fielding pitchers in the league and he won't hesitate if he thinks he has any chance at all in this situation for example if he feels a bunt he won't hesitate to go to third if he thinks he can get the runner one-on-one Koufax giving no indication that time he was going to buy and will be a check of signs after every pitch with third-base coach Preston Gomez Percy is holding Roseboro close at second no outs here in the Dodger third crowd quiet outside ball two precise to the mouth twins playing the centerfielder nossek shallow the right fielder Oliva shallow all three ball three and strike one to Kopacz Roseboro leading a second three and two now the Dodgers must make a decision is the bunt sign still off Mincher has retreated several steps at first gone there's the first lock and cut is in a two on no out Jam and a third of a scoreless game and the batter will be mari wills but before wills comes to the plate he's having a conference at the Dodger dugout with manager Walter Alston the plans meanwhile have warm-up activity in the bullpen wills first time up was called out on strikes see where besides the shortstop is wills us a lot of space on the left side of the inferior Killebrew slit as he went for that ball but it was foul will strike one back to second Roseboro there's our Worthington starting the throw in the twins bullpen he was a twins top reliever in the regular season I'll back out of play strike two and the Wills must get a new back that one was sawed off Roseboro let off this third inning with a double to right Koufax up to sacrifice wound up with a walk and with no outs a strike to count tamari will Killebrew in one step a third all back back well if a long throw the first one away and the runners move up the batter Gilliam never heeded the left in the first inning it was Gilliam's fit fit of the series the twins play the infield up all the way around all one mrs. Jim Gilliam's 6th World Series if you like to look ahead as every manager must the on-deck batter is Willie Davis and he bats left-handed hello in the breaking ball good stop by battey ball to strike water Worthington has been joined by the left-hander Jim Merritt in the twins bullpen in the shallow right Oliva and Roseboro will be held at third and the ball gets beyond battey but pot is there to back it up to down Jim Cott every alert pitcher does in a situation like that back up my catcher and so the Dodger runners are at second and third but now with two down and here's Willie Davis Killebrew is in tight at third Quilici cheating up several steps in second everything else normal all the first strike one no score the Badgers with runners at second and third two out third inning hot starting off Davis as he did in the first-inning when Davis grounded out starting him out with a slow breaking pitch I'm called by the plate on the fire I fullbacks on second Roseboro on 30 this is the man caught once to get out the next man is a right-handed batter Lou Johnson nobody looking for it Asuna happening before the Dodgers nothing the twins not late this Sunday NBC will present three regional American Football League games the Buffalo Bills will face the Kansas City Chiefs the San Diego Chargers beneath the Boston Patriots and the Denver Broncos and Houston Oilers meet a tender that's a FF football live mostly in color and exclusively on NBC check your local listings for the game and time in your city Jim kaat starts it off to the Clintons in the third inning cot like Koufax has one hit in this series kaat is a single knock in two runs takes a strike from Koufax not to be followed by Versalles and nossek hi one and one Claude is very fast has used many times as a pinch runner by manager Samuli of the twins and he likes to bunt for a base hit strike two the Sun again breaking poo sixty degrees at gametime so it should be up around 65 before the minute five strikeouts for Koufax the Dodger left-hander has retired five wins in a row for by way of strikeouts and here is Versailles a strikeout victim in the first inning when's Delevigne for their first cup had two on in the first one fact walk Oliva and Killebrew with two out callbacks fact one another foul back out of play strike two Kopacz so far has not been relying as much on the curveball to my way of thinking as he did his last time out and I think that got that one up where he didn't want to get it and the claims have hit number one the front away here is nothing grounded out short the first in the first campaign I think sandy tried to turn that one over but nothing happened now six had four hits in the third hi for the second time in the game Don Drysdale is up in the Dodger bullpen just off the outside edge one and one second time the big right-hander has heated up today Versailles has led the twins in stolen bases in the regular season in the crowd we're aware that both panting go fires had 26 stolen bases in the season we're going look at it again now meanwhile there is a discussion involving the home plate umpire ed Hurley the first base umpire Tony Benson manager Sammy Lea's come out and Visayas is being set back to first the time have been called that's a question I'm asking myself could interference have been called on the matter Nozick took a cut at the pitch Nozick has been called out it's the second out of the inning on interference it's a foot out credited to the catcher in baseball scoring rules their size has to return to first and with two out here is Tony Oliva so we'll have to do what I'm doing right now if you're keeping score take that s off your scorecard two stolen base the batter is Oliva walked in the first inning the pits to Nasik with hi side and he went across the plate in the process of defecting Murano and in the process is called interference no score comes batting in the third two-out Versailles is on first foul back strike one Oliva seldom walks in the regular-season 576 at-bats he walked only 55 times we're the umpires version of a strike zone and there is a Libas version they different the pitcher were to take great pride in his control he should have a an opposing team of batsmen made up of all believers and Willie Davis's Willie Davis in the regular-season 14 walks in 558 attack speaking of Willie Davis the Dodger centerfielder is playing Oliva about four ten strides left strike two Billy Martin has something with though the twins third base coat to the plate umpire ed Hurley and manager Sam Neely's they're questioning Koufax's moved the first claiming he is not stopping come to think of it this has been a rhubarb pre World Series I can recall several plays at second base involving an attempted steal one with new Johnson of the Dodgers one with Sandy Valdespino of the twins that other than that and the several discussions today it's been free of any heated arguments runner going strike out for Koufax is six and so at the end of a third inning the score the Dodgers nothing and the twins nothing as we watch the best players in the game we like to give a thought to the training grounds from where future major leaguers will come and I guess there is no single training ground because of that baseball must see to it and it contributes to the rapid rote which the game right now enjoys knowing our responsibility which professional baseball in this country welcomes and respects the announcement has been made to the crowd here as to the reason for nossek being called out and as you might expect the some scattered boos are directed generally toward the PA announcer and the umpire in the Dodger fourth of the scoreless game Lou Johnson is first man up ball one Johnson sent a flyball into shallow right in the first inning with a runner on second and two ice and Tony Olivo grabbed it on a tumbling cat pod has an effortless sort of emotion Oh near the foul ball home run Lou Johnson has his second home run of the World Series and the Dodgers take a 1 to nothing lead Ron fairly comes to the plate filed out to the catcher in the second inning tip number three off top and the Dodgers have a one nothing lead near the right-field corner fair ball beyond Oliva Fairley will hold up at second the Dodgers hit the fastball for the homer the off-speed pitch for the double and hurry up activity in the bullpen for the twins on the part of our the Walter Alston again has had a conference with one of his batters this time with West Parker the home run by Johnson we're now actually hit the foul pole Parker fouled out to mentor the first baseman in the second inning the Dodgers could well be bunting the twins expected their ball over Mincher fairly around third as the ball is fumbled by Oliva and now Parker goes to second it's 2 to nothing with mentor up a routine hopper goes for a base hit and an error is charged to Oliva allowing Parker to go to second Parker gets an RBI however his second of the series Oliva appeared to catch his spikes in a third at the hotel behind him Parker noting it immediately went to second so the Dodgers lead by two to nothing Harmon Killebrew talking with Todd Mincher was at the edge of the grass and as a result Parkers founders went for the base hit and manager Sam Mele comes to the mound on only one occasion in this series did the team that scored first not win that was in the first game when Ron fairly homered but the twins went on to win the game since then the team had scored first held on the win and this will be all for Jim Cott the twins lefty goes three innings plus no outs here in the fourth inning gives up five hits right here in a row here in the fourth inning not one and struck out two it ffft our water and our Worthington is announced as the reliever for kaat here in the Dodger fourth inning this will be the veteran right-handers second appearance in the series worth two innings and gave up two hits but no runs were charged to it in the regular season was the twins ready base period in 62 games 110 lost seven but save 14 one goal without only fifty seven hits an 80 and a third innings for those of you who might have taken your eye off your screen when Lou Johnson was up apparently and of course was all run so now Worthington comes on with the Dodgers leading to their nothing no outs in the fourth inning the batter will be produced struck out in the second to my knowledge this is the earliest that Worthington has appeared in any game in 1965 but there are others available Wow Worthington throws the curveball his basketball is actually a slider he's not throwing straight ball as they say it's a natural slider and he likes in a situation like this to sidearm the right-handed batter and try to hit that inside corner with the breaking ball again the twins are expecting a bunt strike Versailles is behind the runner at second Parker whoa one-on-one worthington on occasion throws the knuckler but it's not a bread-and-butter pitch for it Logan grabs it run away that could have been quite a collision every killebrew not falling away at the last moment the batter Roseboro doubled in the third inning when the Dodgers posed a big threat that's not pitched out of it in the twins bullpen johnny klippstein and Jim Merritt are working in the twins fourth inning the four five and six batters are due there's the young lefty merritt from the right-hander klippstein one out and a Dodger runner at second low ball one on beckus Koufax Dodgers leading two to nothing this is the fourth inning Roseboro has six hits in the series breaking ball low and inside ball free at ball four runners first and second one out the batter number will panic oppa I beg your pardon the batter is Koufax with wills moving to the on-deck circle now Koufax up the bunt in the third with Roseboro and second wound up with a walk the Dodger pitcher seeking to join the twins Jim Graham as a two game winner in the series Reddington will go to first out there the runners move up to down Pepa 30 and now Mari will wills called out on strikes in the first inning grounded out second to first in the third batting right-handed against the left-hander kaat to do nothing leave for the Dodgers here in the fourth inning the twins use just about the same infield defense against wills in this situation with runners on at second and third as they do with nobody on uptight a person third more than halfway at second and about halfway of short al worthington trying to close the door imagine here all one Nasik is playing shallow center and Alison shadow letters bow off the breaking ball one on one with cruiser ski in the Dodger lineup at second instead of Lefevre only 3/4 of the Dodger infield switch it is five one and two two and two missing low and inside this Worthington's hard slider Worthington wants a new wall runner on third is Parker on the second roseburg Killebrew in foul territory for twice and at the end of three and a half innings the score is the Dodgers two and the twins nothing Dean Martin welcomes this all-star cast tonight at 10:00 9:00 Central Time George Gobel Earl Bailey the serendipity singers and dino desi and Billy the Dean Martin show tonight in color on NBC in the last of the fourth innings for the twins Harmon Killebrew Earl battey Bob Allison has the Dodgers lead to nothing Sandy Koufax on a one-hitter ball one Killebrew walked in the first inning all back one-on-one Killebrew has walked six times in the series more than any other player ball one and strike two Koufax has six strikeouts is walked two and the only hit a single by Versailles in the third low 2 & 2 back to the mound one away never cam here's our body a strikeout victim in the first inning outside ball one Kobach struck out two in the first two in the second two in the third all about one and two center fielder Willie Davis two down and applause Alison countdown swinging in the second inning Dodger outfield plays deep into the left paralysis Gilliam a good play behind third 1-2-3 inning so at the end of the fourth inning the score is the Dodgers two and the twins nothing Jim Gilliam is the veteran player arbitrator we asked him his feeling about the deciding game of the World Series and he had nothing to say all right then Gilliam taking inside from alan worthington for ball one strike one and one choked off the Dodgers as the two runs are charged to the twins starter Jim kaat blowing inside ball two the Dodgers with five hits the twins with one Gilliam will be followed by Davis Willie Davis and Lou Johnson big hot for the second basemen policy one away Worthington is due to be the third provider in the last half of this fifth inning here's Willie Davis it listen to it bats right Killebrew near the Dodger dugout two down in the Dodger 5th inning have a 40-watt the batter now is Lou Johnson retired on a fine running catch on his flyball into shallow right in the first by Oliva and leading off the fourth inning hit a drive deep to left that glanced off the foul pole for a home run his second of the series he and Ron fairly are the only players with two home runs breaking ball one-on-one Wow the left one and two Johnson homered 12 times in the regular season knocked in 58 run in the series 8 hits four runs batted in into right-center Oliva and so at the end the fraud happening the score is the Dodgers two and the twins nothing a look again at the catch made by Oliva he gets a brief jump on the ball I'm sure extremely graceful to carry along the rest of the way the boys said that I Jews didn't Scully thank you Ray Don Mincher hitting the live pop fly back a third Gilliam one away the totals through for the Dodgers two runs five hits and noise they have left five the twins no runs one hit and one error they have left three rich Rollins comes out on deck to bat after Frank Quilici so Alan Worthington will come out johnny klippstein is down in the bullpen right Quilici pop to short in the second inning Franco who won one and one Koufax threw for any does not have much of a curveball he's been doing it with fastball up two years that moment soon one dungeon going back and over and it's off the fence consomme in the air Johnson recovers it's a double for Quilici my policy hitting the left centerfield fence baura 3 by Lou Johnson and now rich Rollins will bat for Allen worth way for the benefit we're fighting for the pitcher Halliwell occurs number 9 ready Rollins thank you series riches over two or Frank Quilici in his second jump we doubled against Raisa open game one out bottom of the foot and riedel gets up again in the Dodger bullpen one ball and no strikes Oh tell you what it must be like to pitch in the World Series you realize that Jim kaat is fantastic dishes to Dave brass fullbacks is two days rest Jim grant with two days rest at Dodger Stadium after winning somebody has Koufax how do you feel and he said like I'm a hundred years old there's Frank Quilici like fastball that's been I think he has thrown one good curve for a strike he threw it to Tony Oliva otherwise fastball fastball fastball he had one changeup to Bob Allison in the fourth inning and Allison almost took the hands off guilty Thrun one bathua do one out bottom of the third Judah nothing gaudy rich Rollins batting for Alan Worthington who worked two innings walk one did not allow it go back to battling or his six World Series decision he has won three and lost two like the number curveball and he missed with it and he wanted it that's the first guard he stone in fight big that's granted off the rubber another big crowd the runner at second base and after six games in the series policy has a good shot at Roseboro and sometimes they might very well switch signed right here and now it wills comes in from short toe I'd be almost sure this lat if he stays where he is No forget it he didn't come in from Short the largest crowd of the series at Metropolitan 50 pound 3 into 2 Rick Rollins Wow Galicia second the Koufax is struggling it's almost impossible to do it on one pitch in the big leagues and he does not have a curveball and Walter Alston going out that is the third walk issued by Pope we walked two in the curstyn gym class appeared but this control was all Koufax appears to have only the fastball tough customer coming up with two on and one out 12 over silent who struck out and singled the science with eight hits has been a big and the Minnesota the chance to make some noise thought oversize comes out God you stood friends out in the fifth and the twins strap back on deck you're nothing on a double and a walk Gilliam guarding the line to cut down the chance of the extra-base edit perhaps Paul and he tasted first an accountant like a pattern fouled away wanted to they switch the pattern but still all fastball has really been his only fish Drysdale is pitching a ballgame back up he can counting Drysdales fishing by the way another panel humor it as much as Jim grant in the first the twins when they took batting practice today had a left-hander by the name of Sandy young man his last name about his field 190 the bag perforce oh what a play and that would have been a double and at least one run batted in and we had better take another look at that one Gilliam was guarding the line to cut down the chance of the extra base hit and it turned out to be the play here comes he would not about any other play except to go to the bag to out and Joe nossek the body one and he pressed that time that's about the second time today the Koufax did not pitch but he threw he forced himself on epic nossek as grounded to short and was involved in the rare interference play third inning throughout two-on-two nothing Dodgers 5th inning fastball low and forcible I love the eye Kovacs extremely fortunate on that fine play by Gilliam to prevent a run and it would have certainly put runners at second maybe even scored both up you know fastball will short later to ciske and they're out of it no runs one hit to left at the end of five Dodgers two twins nothing this 1965 series game is being brought to you live and in color exclusively on NBC johnny klippstein comes out of the Minnesota bullpen John at one time in the Dodger organization and eventually came back to the men picks or the Dodgers briefly in the 1959 World Series now pitching for Minnesota against the Dodgers Jim kaat went three innings a little wild had some pitches get up on him and caught in three innings allowed two runs and five hits Alan Worthington two fine innings in relief allowed just a walk Oliva making a nice play and now klippstein or the Dodgers Koufax has worked five and he had his bacon saved by Jim Gilliam they made that great way to take an extra-base hit at least a double away from zoar over science so it's 2 to nothing Dodgers in the six two runs five hits no errors they've left five the twins no runs every wet one era they have left five Ron fairly West Parker and dick tracewski in that orders fairly popped out to Earl battey and doubled to right in the fourth inning ron has 11 hits in the series so he has caught will I fly ball of a field Allyson there Bob with the word Wow number 28 there is West Parker who filed out in the second inning and then singled on that high bouncer over men shoes head in the fourth inning that was a big play for one when the twins head in the bottom of the sexes they have Oliva Killebrew and batty a bunt in the air foul back on the net one on one twins bullpen busy again by Henry Jim Perry begins to loosen up areas the only two runs in the game in the fourth inning Lou Johnson homered barely double yet and a bouncing single by Parker got him home change of I believe it to straightaway center and deep Nasik run away by turns twice can't get it at the fence Parker who runs exceptionally well is on his way into third with a triple they'll hold him there with only one out but look like a high changeup by klippstein and Parker hit it over joe nossek's head 430 feet away for a triple the dekhta ciske the batter the Dodgers in leading five men on twice have left runners at second and third and the other man they left it second now they have five through third with one out infield is out strike johnny klippstein trying to keep Parker way squeeze is filed away so that I'd use - squeeze Parker home the ciske fouled it off to fastball just low it really started to bring his right hand out and then slapped it to his side it was that close two and two good - I with a breaking ball for free ciske has two hits in 15 at-bats johnny klippstein minnesota pitcher squeeze and he fouled it away struck out rare time to see them squeeze three and two and he found it off two strikeouts so far he goes back to third and Kruszewski strikes out cover two down and John Rolfe biromantic Roseboro doubled and walked we'll see they pitch to him they will not though the intentional walk to Roseboro and that will bring up Sandy Koufax though the Dodgers trying to squeeze Parker's twice that the Suzie found off each time the west yellow third with two hour and pullback will be coming up in a moment Roseboro trots 232 marker at third patty for fire and here's sandy koufax sandy has walked it back to the box over one Roseboro at first held on by mention good letter high fastball little story never change up on a fetching Oh so the big play the sis keys get the bunt down fire holding a third Roseboro at 32 out to sandy : one two Dodgers two runs sixes the twins no runs two hits and one error each side having left five Gillian taking an extra base hit away from shawl over science in the fifth don't do I'm the HEPA doggedly and five and a half two twins nothing we can't get Jim Gilliam feelings about the seventh game of the World Series here's what he said before the game this is about six World Series and I don't think this is the first time that we offend into seven games all I know all you can do is do the best you possibly can I'll undersexed then the big boys come up for the twins Tony Oliva Harmon Killebrew and Earl battey and so far the question is just how long can you pitch you go with one pitch Kovaks with his fastball Oliva walked in the first inning struck out in the third I'm going for one go back still out two hits walked three struck out six the twins were getting to him in the fest except for the grape flavor Gillian into the twins dugout the Ray said earlier when Oliva was up of the plate he didn't think Tony had lost the back in the series I tell you that was a tape-measure job ray indeed it was really most fortunate that someone has not been injured this season by the flying battle believe a player or fan there have been some cold narrow escapes the wonder they don't plan before one-on-one Oh in the dirt Walton oh thank you my knowledge has to Bob Allison maybe a half a dozen curves only one of those for a strike everything else bashful fastball fouled away 2 & 2 carick and League batting champ two years running Tony Oliva now back big crowd of 50,000 596 taking in the final game very high the steady diet of fastballs and Koufax records his first strikeout poverty hello sandy now has struck out 26 in this series the record for the most strikeouts in one series belongs to the great right-hander the Cardinal Bob gifts who struck out 31 last year Harmon Killebrew walked and hit back to the box Dave Boswell owpain iliyan still guarding the line fastball fouled back a third down the line Will's Gilliam and Johnson and it's Johnson who almost ran over Bob Stewart the left-field umpire cemeteries go around word and look out for the box seats oh nice play by lose two out and here is Earl battey girl struck out in the first inning flied deep to right-center in the fourth line drive at Will's and that'll do it the twins are out an order in the 6th and at the end of 6 Dodgers two twins nothing in 1951 the nationally president Lord Frank was named to mr. baseball and now on this day in 1965 in an official capacity as Commissioner of baseball he takes in his final game the Commissioner and the American and national leagues would like to take this opportunity to thank the millions of fans who've made baseball a tremendous success News seventh inning to do nothing Dodgers episode Will's Gilliam and Willie Davis interesting to note considering that Koufax is fishing with two days rest that the twins when after the first pitch in the sixth inning Oliva spent some time at the plate but Killebrew fouled out and malley lined out for one you wonder as the game progresses whether the twins battery will make pull back through a little more fish bouncer over the mound to the left of us is who's up with it at the bag and fro Jim oh what a nice play but made it so great is not to get to the ball but did you notice how quickly he got rid of the ball one away and here is Gillian Gilliam right now is the big man I met one play backhanding what appeared to be a sense double hit by Zola Versailles in the fifth inning and heck has so far turned the game around right Jim has a batter has single flied to right and grounded out miss for the change one on one one-on-one to the veteran seemed strange after his great play but this might be his last appearance in the series normally late in the occasion he give way for defensive purposes and isn't that ironic in the Dodger bullpen the left-hander is Ron perranoski the big right-hander is johnny burton fastball hit into the hole they said to right-field the Gilliam a single to right with one out in the seventh the Dodgers seventh and the batter Willie Davis now the brave boy did it hit number two off johnny klippstein Willie Davis has sacrificed and twice fouled out he has six hits in 26 head back Killebrew in on the grass Mincher holding the bag on gilja fly ball down the left-field line slicing Visayas and Alison in pursuit it'll drop foul untouched Gilliam back the furs on one to Willie Davis to run seven hits no errors for the Dodgers they have left seven men no runs two hits one error for the twins they have left five we're in the seventh inning Willie checking with Preston Gomez johnny klippstein third Minnesota century Jim kaat went three alan worthington tube and now Johnny another foul down the line out of play on two this might be klippstein last appearance he is due to bat fourth when the twins hit in the seventh one out breaking ball missed one I in the dirt or hit him on the foot on the foot he said father pitch to put runners at first and second the Willie Davis goes to first hit by the feds Gilliam the second and with one out Lou Johnson the batter trying to talk her down and in and hit Willie Davis here's Lou Johnson and he had really hit the ball hard two of his three trip he homered Oliva made a fine running catch on him in the fifth inning and Oliva made the scrambling catch and the little fly ball in the first inning fastball by the way overboard is mentioned no plate johnny klippstein has been pitching for a living a long long time Flip Stein who was born in Washington DC again to pitch four dollars in 1944 John will be 38 in another couple of days it looks about 28 fastball hit slowly - Killebrew Hyman has to go the long way so everybody moves up 90 feet Jim Gilliam 2/3 Willie Davis to second two out and Ron fairly the batter see whether they pitched the ferry or not in one of the bigger plays in this series Alan Worthington was brought in in relief with runners at second and third and pitched to fairly and he singled home two runs and now Sam Neely I think is going out to ask his pitcher how he would prefer to pitch and that happens a lot or he can go to the bullpen and bring in a left-hander Marit number 26 is coming in the Sam was burned once this time he'll go to the percentages we told Sam this story because it was in the papers today and if mrs. Sam Neely is listening maybe she could use a smile and I hope she'll smile with the rest of us read Smith we syndicated New York columnist had a line today in the paper which is then mentioned all over the town today and the line goes this way the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Dodgers like mrs. Sam mealy have carried things too far here's Jim Merritt ready to cover wallet with number 20 foot yep so johnny klippstein works an inning and two thirds allowed two hits hit a batter struck out one and has not allowed to run however the men at second and third are his responsibilities and the kid from the Dodger Clubhouse back in 1961 now pitching against the Dodgers in the deciding game of the World Series Jim Merritt he and young Jim lefeber with teammates on the Dodger rookie team in 61 if he fetching to Ron fairly and a reminder while baseball is truly America's game the interest in it is truly international in addition to our armed forces around the world this game for instance is being broadcast to an audience in Latin America estimated at over 20 million Ron fairly who will be the battery has popped up double to right and flied the left so Jim Merritt is ready Jim making his second appearance in the series barely has 11 hits merit worked two innings allowed one run for one Gilliam at third Davis is second - up to nothing Dodgers seventh inning Dodge's have left all kinds of men in scoring position today which is a tribute to Minnesota clutch pitching drive to right field it's playable Olivas there a reminder Chrysler presents survival comedy special neck Wednesday evening at 9:00 8:00 central time guests include James Garner and we five with special attraction Carol Lawrence and special guest Phyllis dillers bottom of the settle two to nothing Dodgers in a crowd of 50,000 having completed the seventh-inning stretch Bob Allison Don Mincher and Frank Quilici alison has struck out and hit a changeup sharply at Gilliam in the 430 no he's over 2 turn ball to the hole will belong throw to May makes it that's one of the rare curveballs that he is done one away Caterpie dr. Kirk and again that's another member of the Minnesota trend is hitting the first pitch against a pitcher working with two days rest Mincher has struck out and fouled out over two fastball another fastball same spot on the hand well we do not have the bit of irony we were talking about before Jim Gilliam's still at third base here in the seventh inning same spot but missed this time one and two three fast balls on the hands to Don Mincher 1 & 2 half swing he held up ground below Wow backhanded by Parker but still two and two to Don Mincher the Dodgers two runs seven hits and no errors they have left nine men in seven innings the twins no runs two hits and one error they have left five the biggest single play in the game up to here a great backhanded stop by Jim Gilliam of what appeared to be a cinch extra-base hit by Zola over science with two on and one out in the fifth inning fouled away ninja is making colfax work Alison hit the first pitch kundo all the way two balls and two strikes to Don Mincher I've popped fly Roseboro coming over fire coming down from first Roseboro two out in the seventh inning and thank Quilici to that 11th birthday and at this stage of the game policy will determine just how long Jim Merritt is going to pitch it fullest he makes out Merritt pitches the eighth if he gets a board he'll no doubt hit to the pitcher to nothing Dodgers bottom of the seventh Frank popped to short and then doubled off the left-center field fence he ripped it in the fifth inning he appeared to be trying to take a shot to right field on one two Frank Quilici curveball a rare thing fouled away the Billy Martin on to the policy ball one here to be a breaking ball 1 & 2 another breaking ball for sure the two high curbs and the count 2 & 2 fastball got it that's the pitch strikeout number eight twins are out northern at the end of seven innings of play the Dodgers to a reminder this Saturday NBC will telecast one of the top college football games of the year when undefeated taxes meets undefeated Arkansas in the NCAA game of the week four o'clock Eastern Daylight Time three central Daylight Time live and in color exclusively on NBC unfiled of the play told one reminder too that before each college football game is the bud Wilkinson NCAA preview show West Fargo is two for three today fouled out single the right and triple the dead South twice he has reached third place he has been unable to get home yes seven hits of 22 that battle one hopper I put it nicely as policy to throw him out another nice defensive my philosophy short hopping on a ball hit to his glove side dick tracewski has struck out in the second inning tried to sacrifice in the fourth and popped up to alan worthington tried to squeeze twice in the sixth inning and eventually struck out Killebrew throws him two out of me Johnny Roseboro the bat-rope Earl if you are not keeping score when the twins come up in the bottom of the eighth they'll have a hitter for Merritt then Versalles and nossek Roseboro doubled to right and walked twice like the John is 6 for 20 Oh any merit or a trunk full of stuff on to the Dodgers knew they had a dandy but under the baseball law there wasn't very much they could do about holding merit and they lost him to the twins but they know a big one got away still wanting to bottom of the evening's to do nothing Dodgers at Minnesota with the twins fan little hand-clapping music trying to shake something loose sandy Valdespino will lead it off adding the Jim Merritt they're number 28 candy Valdespino is 3 for 10 in the series right Valdespino faced sandy koufax in los angeles and single as we mentioned the Twins had their sandy batting practice Oh a little bit by way of first base not quite sidearm correct over-the-top motion got away - indeed I fly ball down the left-field line and slicing Johnson over the line and back hinging at the wall for the out nice play by the second time he's headed number two and here's a man who figured to be involved in the biggest play of the day because he has been the most electrifying of the twins it's all over science he struck out in the first inning singled in the third apparently stole second but was called back on interference and then in the fifth inning came up with runners at first and second and one out drilled one that was backhanded by Gilliam and turned into a boy's curve ball one in the Dodger bullpen Don Drysdale and Ron perranoski fastball one-on-one your NASA gondii fastball body found in months 1 & 2 boy he could hit him out one into the soil yeah I feel go back to the track and makes the cash number 24 the Visayas goes out deep to Johnson to out and here is Joe nossek nossek grounded to short in the first inning and was involved on the interference fall in the third back of the attempted steal by Versailles and last time up Joe hit into a force play he has four hits in 19 trips one Gilliam plays him in on the grass and ones backless fastball foul bang one on one to our bottom of the a Dodgers two twins nothing what makes this series ending up on some kind of a high note if nossek makes out two ND inning in the ninth inning all the twins have to come up Tony Oliva Harmon Killebrew and Earl battey so don't go wandering off Walter the Dodgers in the night will have Bo thanks deleted off and Will's and Gilliam and is allowed two hits walked three struck out eight ground ball the world the friends are out in the eighth and score at the end of the play the Dodgers two the twins nothing and so we're finally face-to-face with the ninth inning of the seventh game of the 1965 World Series the totals through eight the Dodgers two runs seven hits and no errors they have left nine the twins no runs two hits and one error they have left five on the mound is Jim Harry the fifth Minnesota pitcher Jim kaat went three innings allowed two runs and five hits Alan Worthington went to innings without a hit or a run johnny klippstein an inning into thirds two hits and no run and then Jim Merritt went one and a third now Jim Perry in the ninth he will pitch to Sandy Koufax Maury wills and Jim Gilliam cover 30 Kovac getting around all fours as he makes his way up to the plate and he has a battery walked in the third inning his back to the Box in the fourth struck out in the sixth he has one hit in eight at-bats and the hit was good for a run batted in checked up in the foster strike anyway on two one into it sitting here looking at the ninth-inning there's Dave Boswell loosening up in the bullpen boy it's a long time from the first day of spring training and it's all riding in the night now to go one out in the ninth and Maury wills to back out grounded out twice and fouled out Morioka for Jim Gilliam on deck right same defensive set of who wills he must be alike killebrew's dentist he bunts anyway foul Oh into Harmon now with two strikes goes back to the air will occasionally this year has kinda bunt with two strikes one into sinking fastball down the way don't forget bottom of the ninth-inning for Minnesota they have Tony Oliva Harmon Killebrew and Earl battey - and do Maureen has 11 history series he is 11 for 33 RBIs Oh so we'll see if wills tries to do a little running now in the ninth inning shepherd I see chef Julia Maury has stolen three bases in the series the Dodgers as a team have stolen nine bases the twins have stolen two Jim Gilliam two singles flied to right grounded out and the coach who became a player again is a big man today Will's go pitch a strike the throw down John party of the American League felt to out and than I am to to nothing Dodgers on one account to Gillian one-on-one the Gilliam who was retired officially at the end of 64 and then brought back as a player in 65 one of the big reasons why the Dodgers are here at all ground ball to short precise to mention did fill the bag and around 1 to 3 and the story end of eight and a half innings of play Dodgers two twins nothing a defensive chain for the Dodgers in the last of the ninth John Kennedy replaces Jim Gilliam who came up with what might well have been a game saving play for the Dodgers Vin Scully is wending his way right now to the Dodger dressing room in anticipation of a possible series winning celebration but meanwhile the man generally recognized as baseball's greatest pitcher Sandy Koufax in the last of the ninth must face one of the fine hitters in the game two-time American League batting champion Tony Oliva one of the premier long ball hitters in the game Harmon Killebrew and another long ball Fred Earl battey there goes the bat Jim when injustice escapes it down at first it's a strike Oliva today has walked and struck out twice Koufax has struck out each he has retired 11 twins in a row the last twin baserunner was Rollins pinch-hitting in the fifth inning two runs seven hits no errors the Dodgers no runs to hit one 50,000 and ninety-six looking on in person this is a metropolitan area all of you good folks joining us on television the Dodger outfield is shaded to the left i won - Koufax has shut out the twins now through 17 inning he's shut out on Monday when he allow only four days and through eight innings today today at took a tremendous defensive play all than two strikes Willie Kennedy won out so in a row retired by Koufax here is Killebrew walk in the first hit back to the mound in the fourth fouled out to Lou Johnson in the sixth on a fine play near the stands Killebrew this year at 25 home run in the dirt for one you're out field is deep and around Quinn's of left five on none since the Bethany - my there is continuous activity in the Dodger bullpen Killebrew is on with one out in the last of the ninth hip number three the batter Earl battey he has struck out flied out deep the center and lined out to the shortstop to the nine second baseman dick tracewski Kennedy is practically astride the line Dodge's will give up anything in the hole when I give up a possible excavation like one is not Madison do nothing the last of the main villa boys on first with one out strike three pop looking like I look back and now the pressure is squarely on Bob Ellison he has struck out and grounded out twice yesterday he hit a two-run homer a field is deep in shade up to the left all back strike one gently the left at about ten miles off one and one on deck is a left-handed batter gone mental just about every honor that a pitcher can receive has come to Sandy Koufax to kill ooh and go upon reaching back for part of he has had to reach back he has found what he needed Dunham's occupation strike two two out for everyone first Dodgers leading two to nothing step off we did it and Nickelback's gets his tenth strikeout his second consecutive shutout of the twins on Monday on a four-hitter today on a three-hitter after every pitcher of course likes to finish the whole game with a strikeout this was of course not a game this was the seventh game of the World Series and the totals for the Dodgers two runs seven hits and no errors for the Minnesota Twins no runs three hits and one ever and so the two teams picked by practically no one to be playing in the World Series carry it down through seven and the Dodgers have won the 1965 World Series Koufax is the winner in this series he is one two and lost one he scored the one shutout in Dodger Stadium where every pitcher likes to pitch and the shutout today in Metropolitan Stadium were very few pitchers like to pitch Jim kaat the loser where 3 innings was followed by al Worthington johnny klippstein jim merritt and Jim Perry Koufax wanted kaat lost it as these same two pitchers duel for the third time in the World Series as it turned out Lou Johnson's home run in the fourth inning the only run the Koufax needed they scored another in the same and a bouncing single over first into right field by West parking so the Dodgers are the world champions defeating the twins in this final game by a score of 2 to nothing and right now lined up this 1965 World Series let's switch our cameras to pick up corn Scully and some of the victorious Los Angeles Dodgers so take over then needless to say this is the dressing room of the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers this has been Scully high atop the safety of the trunk hoping to bring to you some of the men who brought Los Angeles another championship in 1959 the Dodgers brought the championship to Los Angeles in 1963 the Dodgers brought the championship to Los Angeles and in 1965 they have done it again we will meet some of those men just as soon as oh let's say a little Tom prevailed one of the toughest parts of the World Series was played right here in the dressing room and maybe next time we'll have a camera here as Jim Gilliam who was so important in the victory sat and watched the ninth-inning on television but here's the fella who gave the Dodgers the championship sandy in Los Angeles when you pitched your 7 to nothing shutout you were quoted as saying after the game I feel a hundred years old so today how do you feel 101 101 the feel great video and I know I don't have to go out there and warp about four months sandy it appeared from upstairs that your fastball was really your only pitch for quite some time yes it was I don't know what it was the dad didn't have the curveball at all and I wasn't getting it over and I just stayed with the fastball and tried to get in pretty good spots and I got the lead I tried to keep him from pulling the ball but good when Jim Gilliam shot here in the ninth inning and watched you on television he turned and said to me he looks like a fighter who has been hit and is now fighting on instinct is that overdramatizing or were you that tired no I'd say I I feel like a little bit more tired in the last ball game I pitched here and I know I was more tired they Davey won defended against Milwaukee but the I think there's a lot hotter in Los Angeles and the cool weather keeps you from tiring a little bit I felt like my fastball last three or four innings was as good or better than it was early in the ballgame which I really didn't expect two days rest I figured by the end of the ball game out have to go to the curveball most veteran newspaper men around the ballpark were watching to see when you and Drysdale arrived which of the two had already shaved because its traditional at the pitcher with the beard is going to pitch but you and Drysdale both came in unshaven when did you find out you were going to pitch today I found out when we got here that's why I knew her of appreciation well you didn't know until you got know now tell me when you found out was it in front of the entire club as a manager go over a lot yeah Walt had a meeting and he said that he thought he'd like to start the left-hander and he had a reason for it he said if I have to make a switch I'd rather go left right left talking about perranoski has his met last man if you had to make two moves then start the right-hander and go left left you don't know you don't change their lineup any when you do that let's say you've had four no-hitters a perfect game you have struck out 18 you have a World Series record of 15 in one game where does this one fit in as far as thrills are concerned I don't know if any has got to be as high as any of this whole year is a thrill up we were ballclub that everybody said it was going to finish fifth and we lost Tommy Davis I thought we were going to finish eighth and we went on to win a pennant and everybody did such a great job blue Johnson with the home run today he came up when Tommy got hurt and did a great job and carried us for the first ten days two weeks he was here and I think that got us over the hump without Lou coming up and doing that great job right then I think the whole ballclub probably would have sagged a little bit sandy thank you so very much and now going back and sit down and relax a little while sandy koufax the man who hit the home run who hit two home runs in the series who is called way out by his teammates way out Lou Johnson Doodle great expanded you look great at saving little did you know your home run hit the foul pole well I've made my turn man and as you know momentarily I stayed at home plate to see whether the ball was blown out I know he's good enough but he was cooking so quick and I got the first face I saw it bounce back and I knew no one had thrown it back in you know you're a living storybook you have played on 18 teams in 13 years were there times when you were going to quit actually this year up in it this will be my last you if I hadn't got a chance to play in the major leagues and I finally got a shot I had a little up of capitalize on it and here we are today the world champions in it's great winner and it's really great I got excellent cloud but it won't come out no oh happy well you just keep it in there because there'll be all laughter okay and I want to say one thing I call him a model before the game it was the first time I ever thought I'd call it before game so she sent a prayer up on it and I found I know they all was pulling for me my wife and the kids so this is it it was such a long time coming congratulate you now go on over and savor that victory okay there Lou Johnson who hit the home run there are so many of course we can see Don Drysdale over by the table and right here the president of the Los Angeles Dodgers mr. Walter O'Malley and where does this one fit in you are now the president of a club that has been the champions four times once in Brooklyn three times in Los Angeles how does this one rage there's wonderful another out someone vide you never know what's going to happen with these boys I wish it could have been finished in Los Angeles so while our wonderful fans out there could have been done on the end of it but they got the picture of the great series we're very proud manager our team and buzzy and you buddy and Jerry through all of that thank you very much mr. O'Malley let's meet the head of the Dodgers the man who sat quietly along well before that we'll have the president of the National League mr. Warren Giles mr. Giles odd was great just just great I can't say too much about it other was typical I guess of the way the Dodgers have played all year that the tying run was at the plate oh dear it worried me I was shaking all during the ballgame but it was that kind of a pennant race congratulations to you sir and early autumn afraid we were so glad to have a team and an organization like the Dodgers representing us in a great series thank you well I know one man who kept his outward calm anyway and that is the manager of the world champion Dodgers you have managed four champions and you indeed deserve a round of applause and you're getting it and congratulations well thank you thank you very this is a tough one and I got out of the club after is pretty good too they again within a very short two runs of maybe telling us or winning us and they've got a great ballclub over here and legends where I happen to win of course but I think you got to give the other clubs a lot of credit Walter you and after the mount once in a game to talk to Koufax did the thought into your mind to left him I thought that sandy was throwing dirt all the way through I know attention the taking him out when I went out to I just wanted to be sure that he wasn't trying to reach back and get a little extra he was in a little trouble and sometimes pitchers want to reach back and get a lecture and that's when they become high and hang the curveball and I just more than said well just put your normal high will be alright you had a tremendous decision to make should you fit Sandy Koufax or should you pitch Don Drysdale you've already explained the thinking behind it but how long did it actually take you to make the decision really I mean I yeah this is I said before the game this is one of the toughest decisions I've made all all year maybe even in my baseball history but in awhile when I had a pretty good pretty good chance of being right and I'm glad that sandy pitched a great game John pitch nine innings in the bullpen he was ready and everything but we didn't have to do that congratulations thank you well that's the story needless to say they're wild ecstatic euphoric you name it in the world champion Dodger dressing room now let's go up to the quiet of the booth right then and it is a quiet booth here at Metropolitan Stadium as the folks slowly leave this ballpark on a day that the weatherman dictated would be a very beautiful day for baseball a dramatic World Series and in particular a dramatic seventh game for all of us here with NBC to send the game to you good folks we'd like to say our special thanks from NBC Sports to the Commissioner of baseball mr.
