I had a chance years ago to watch Game 7 of the 1965 World Series, and the thing that struck me most was the lack of on-field celebration at the end. If memory serves (it's been a long time and I haven't had a chance to check it out on YouTube), Koufax's teammates just surrounded him as he walked off the field. It was very understated and, I thought, really showed what Koufax had had to do physically to get his team to that point.

Also, someone pointed this out to me at the time: keep an eye on the "check" swings in that era.

You deserve to be upvoted to the moon. Seriously, this is so cool -- I already forwarded the library to my dad, who'll probably love it even more, and I'm sitting here watching Bob Gibson's 17-K opener to the '68 World Series.

and ground of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn one of baseball's most historic parks and today the site of Game six of the 1952 World Series hi everybody I'm Bob Costas and in a sense you might say the 52 series was my first I was six months old at the time the truth is we're having trouble with the early audio on the tape but luckily you'll be able to hear the voices of Mel Allen and red barber as soon as the first hitter steps to the plate just as they called it over NBC back in 1952 the Dodgers enter this sixth game with a 3-2 edge they split the first parent of its field then took two of three from the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium so with their backs to the wall in pursuit of their fourth consecutive World Championship the Yankees call on the veteran right-hander Vic Raschi here in Game six Raschi is 33 years old from west springfield massachusetts the Springfield rifle as he's known winner of 21 games each of the three previous seasons and 16 and 6 with a knee RA of 2.78 in 1952 Raschi was the winner as the starter for the Yankees in game 2 here at Ebbets Field here he is number 17 Vic Raschi to start in game six for New York he's opposed by the skinny right-handed rookie Billy Loes for the Dodgers Loes 61 and 165 from Long Island City New York was 13 and 8 with an ER a of 2.6 9 in his first season in Brooklyn this is his first start of the 52 series although he did work briefly in relief in game 2 it seems as if a Subway Series was an almost yearly occurrence in New York during this era the Yankees and Dodgers in 47 49 here in 52 53 and then again in 55 and 56 toss in a Yankee giant series in 51 for good measure and here they are going at it once more with the Dodgers needing just one more victory to wrap up their first ever World Championship up in the booth a pair of Hall of Fame announcers are getting ready to call a series in which six Hall of Fame ballplayers will perform there they are in the catbird seat as the old redhead used to call it on the left red barber and on the right a longtime voice of the Yankees in the lighter hat Mel Allen during the regular season Casey Stengel's Yankees who would win five consecutive pennants in this stretch had a record of 95 and 59 and finished two games in front of Al Lopez's Cleveland Indians in the American League race as for the Dodgers Charlie Dressen was their manager in 52 and their record was 96 and 57 good for a four and a half game bulge at season's end over Leo DeRosa's Giants the team that had caught them at the wire in a furious pennant race the year before and then defeated them in the playoff on the historic Bobby Thompson homerun let's take a look at the lineups now for Game six the Yankees will go with Gil McDougald as their leadoff man Gil is the Yankees third baseman at shortstop batting second Phil Rizzuto Joe DiMaggio had retired the year before and relinquished the center field spot to young Mickey Mantle matt'll will hit third in Casey Stengel's lineup today in his first full seasons in the major leagues Mickey hit 311 with 23 home runs and he had a big World Series in 52 as well with a batting average of 345 future hall-of-famer Johnny Mize starts at first base for the Yanks the big cat is the cleanup man and he hit three home runs in the 52 Fall Classic another future Hall of Famer is behind the plate for the Yankees colorful Yogi Berra in left field and hitting 6th it's gene Woodling over in right field and batting seventh Irv Noren and the Yankees second baseman at number 8 hitter is Billy Martin Raschi as we said is on the mound here in game 6 here's charlie dressen's lineup for the Dodgers one of the great glove men of all time at his position Billy Cox at third base leading off shortstop Pee Wee Reese hit over 300 in this series for the Dodgers and he bats 2nd Duke Snider the Duke of Flatbush always an outstanding World Series performer is in centerfield he'll hit third for the Dodgers today he had a big World Series in 52 with four home runs the cleanup man is second baseman Jackie Robinson in left field batting fifth George shotgun Shuba behind the plate and hitting 6th in charlie dressen's order catcher Roy Campanella so it's a confrontation between two of the game's great catchers is one of the subplots here in the 52 series Berra for the Yankees and Campanella for Brooklyn the Dodger 1st baseman is one of their best and most popular players Gil Hodges but in this 52 series Gil is really struggling through the first five games he's hitless in right field strong arm Carl Furillo he'll bat eighth for Brooklyn and on the mound Billy Loes up in the booth red barber and Mel Allen are just about set to call it and they'll be with you in moments but first with our national anthem here's Gladys good Gil mcdougal leads off he's had two out of 16 in the series high inside ball one fell over the end Orthodox batting stance inside ball 2 by June 1 late that one right in there figuring McDougald to be taking as leadoff man and ball game a high foul out of play upstairs up onto the roof the count becomes two balls two strikes ground ball hits the belly run away don't you laugh again I was bringing sunglasses out to peewee Reese Phil Rizzuto as resilience up now Reese is trotting back out short you just saw the blur coming by your screen and laughing at a returning to the Dodger dugout Rizzuto's had two hits out of 19 times it back ball one at the knees inside coaching down at first base is Bill Dicky and a third base Frank Crosetti the high pop out to short short left race out there under do away coming up now is Mickey Mantle 7 out of 21 Thank You Man the leading Yankee hitter at a 333 clip little outside ball one as you've learned if you did not know before mantle is a switch hitter that's left-handed against right-handed pitching and vice versa equal power of me the side of the plate dry low curves the outside part of the Craddock young Billy Loes on the mound outside ball to tune one to another smoker ball three outside full count on Beck is Johnny Mize three balls two strikes two outs none on top of the first inning no score ball four found Johnny Mize johnny mize who already has one for himself a permanent niche in the hearts of fans everywhere regardless of which team they may be rooting for the sentimental hero in this series in any case like one like a good cut he's had four out of nine and the series three of the four home runs bow back like to that must've dented the box of mr. wall O'Malley someone is pointing of the spot and actually he must have gone right on into it his fresco Thompson head on there you just saw two strikes as the driver right-center racing over port is Schneider and he makes a nice running back and sought the middle of the first inning the score is Yankees nothing Brooklyn nothing last half the first inning at Ebbets Field Vic Raschi on the mound making a second Series appearance in this series of course he had a record of three wins and two losses in previous World Series he beat the Dodgers in the second game which was played here at Ebbets Field being helped along by five run inning his mates gave him in the sixth inning of the ballgame pitching a very strong game a three-hitter lying all the hits and one inning so it's Vic Raschi out there on the mound trying to keep the Yankees in the series if he can Billy Cox the batter ball one the left side Billy Cox four out of 17 strike one in one curve is over strike two hello outside22 another breaking pitch two balls two strikes by ball to short left may drop an egg Oh stocks in the second with a bellick knock got a pop fly double on left field line Woodling couldn't get into it normally google out number one and up down the little Colonel Pee Wee Reese the hitting star of the series with 9 out of 21 closely followed by Duke Snider's clutch hitting Snyder's had two hits less but is driven in six runs Reece is driven in three the bunt up into the air there in front of the plate hasn't attempted sacrifice and Reese pops to bear oh here comes the big Duke drove in four runs yesterday am Jib schneider the leading RBI man in this series with six opening day a homer with one on and yesterday drove in four on including a homer with one arm hi inside ball one jake pitler coaching at first base and the manager Chuck Dressen at third last half the first inning Cox on second one out a bluff pickoff situation inside phonies ball too Jackie Robinson on deck Tom's second one out last half first inning no score wait inside ball three they cranky the Springfield rifle no concerned now ball four outside Jackie Robinson No cider on first Cox on second one out and here's Jackie three out of 15 the ground ball hit toward third McDougald has the steps on third and can't make a play anywhere else there was a slow bounder Hill stumbled off the bag I don't know whether or not he might have had to play otherwise or not Robinson is real quick getting down the line Duke Snider on second base and Jackie Robinson on first and the hitter is George Shuba Shuba having replaced Andy Pafko as red told you earlier we acquainted yesterday with the fact that he had injured himself and even had our cameraman get him in a wonderful shot massaging his time muscle as he's still trying to stay in the ball game in left field so here's Schubert fouled off upstairs strike one Huber's had one out of three the Springfield rifle Vic Raschi Dylan the Jam first inning two on curve is high one in one try that slow curve on deck is Roy Campanella another high curveball to tune one having watched drasi over the last few years sometimes the manner in which he will join a ball game is tipped off early by his ability or lack of it to control his curve like to got the outside corner with his faster he is a type of pitcher I ever who if he happens to be shaky in the beginning and can get by will frequently settle down curb outside ball three Oh count so with two down Duke Snider on second and Jackie Robinson on first we'll be off and running with the pitch there we go so high pop foul it may be out of play I don't know it is out of play ball went behind the air it even escaped us as it went above our telecasting booth and awaits you just where it was going to come down back into view that one got high up into the wind which is blowing across the third-base line toward the stands and helped blow it on in Snider on second Robinson on first two outs three and two on the hitter first-inning no score there they go swung on a ground ball hit out toward Martin up with it - mais side retired no runs one hit no errors two left on the score ten of the first inning Yankees nothing Dodgers nothing first half the second inning Yogi Berra gene Woodling and Irv Noren will be the first hitters for the Yankees young Billy Loes the 22 year-old right-hander shoulder the responsibility of trying to pitch the Dodgers into their first World Championship Larry Baron has had 5 out of 19 in the series and in passing I think you can tip your cap to him after having had that extremely rugged day at the stadium when the ball got bind that allowed to run score in the ninth and with the goat horns having been placed on him he came back to play magnificent game the next day inside for a ball in there battling with the index finger of his catching hand badly damaged the high fly foul down the left the Alliance going out of play we count one ball one strike I pop up around the mound Reese calls for it and the Dodger captain makes the catch one down the batter is gene woodling feeling woodling has had four hits in 16 times at bat 1 a pinch-hit triple opening day strike good fastball as a line drive faster Robinson the right-center for a base hit Snyder cuts it off and the throw comes back in to Jackie and Woodling is on with the line single the right-center the Yankees first hit and coming up now served Noren Noren played opening day when kc feared that gene woodlings injury would hamper his running Noren failed a hit came through as a pinch-hitter yesterday for New York and now has replaced Bauer and right field due to Bauer's weakness for the band in this series strike hank having had just one hit in 17 times at bat in case figure you'd better try and noren out there in right field ball 1 1 & 1 you will note some of the empty areas here as we told you those who lived in the vicinity of Ebbets Field can still come on as some tickets left like to change up got in beautifully the reason for that is we told us read told you the Dodgers making every effort to and they bless many fans as possible to attend this series so instead of selling the tickets the most of the tickets the reserve tickets in strips for all the games they sold them by single games to to a customer ball two to two and a lot of fans just presume that all the tickets are gone and despite the fact that we along with the Dodgers themselves made announcements that there were tickets available a lot of folks just figured somebody else was there ahead of them and didn't bother strike three Noren went down swinging of a good fastball Billy Martin the batter four out of 15 series strike good fastball the moral to be drawn from the ticket situation is this that should the game go and - should the series go into its seventh and final game better be around one ball one strike no score top of the second inning ball to curve outside 2 & 1 Raja's their own against Woodling strike two - two good fastball and there's two both the knees and over the inside part of the plate outside ball three full count on Martin there it goes Woodling the ground ball foul down the third base line special Park policeman indicated pretty good growing arm Woodling returning to first two white three and two on the banner there goes Woodling strike brain no runs one hit no errors one left on and so at the middle of the second inning the score is Yankees nothing Brooklyn nothing last half a second inning the Brooklyn Dodgers sending up Roy Campanella Gil Hodges and Carl Furillo as their first three batsmen campanella's had three out of 20 lowball one I've been a little inside for the fastball hard shot to short rizzuto for the beautifully in the throw better claim to mine put hers off the bag but he got it back it was off but he got it back laughing umpire is telling pitler to get back into the coach's box beautiful play by Rizzuto and a follow-up fine performance by Mize who had to come off the bag and then get back just to have Rizzuto's made a couple of fine plays on Roy robbing face hits Gil Hodges bounce it off just above us like one no score last half the second inning low outside ball 1 1 1 you have continued to see in this series some great short stopping by - the greatest exponents of the art Grace and Rizzuto curve is over nicely I'd like to I'm back is Carl Furillo just outside and the count is two and two first strikeout for Raschi birthday feeling Carl Furillo stepping in he's had three four seventeen but whether he'd gotten a lick or not plate he made one tremendous play among others in this series among many fine plays he made a tremendous one to save the Dodgers the game yesterday ball one he had the time his leap perfectly to rob Johnny Mize of his second home run of ballgame in the eleventh inning which would have deadlocked the game Oh outside bar to do nothing two balls one strike good fastball he cut on six foot 190 founder has a ball lying on him and the right feel and his foul by about two feet foul ball a time down the left-field line out of the park two balls two strikes curb is blind Woodling throws back into Martin and carl furillo face it - left for the second hit on Raschi up comes below Morello hung out the clothesline on that one a good solid liner between third and short now art Passarella is called Tex Rickard the Brooklyn public address announcer to make an announcement to the stands to remove their coats and outer garments from the railings as techs are they about to make the announcement he's awaiting the first pitch though to the batter Billy Loes like ladies and gentlemen would you please remove the top coats from the railing as revealed like to like three no runs one hit no errors one left on and the score at the end of two innings the Yankees nothing the Dodgers nothing the two inning totals the Yankees no runs one hit no errors two left on the Dodgers no runs two hits no errors three left on red and I smiled a moment ago when Tex Rickard went to make the announcement to the band's sitting in the front boxes to remove their top coats so often that announcement is made along the lines with people sitting in the front but boxes please remove their clothes and you just leave it that way which of course will occasion a laugh the textures on the beam on that one top of the third inning Vic Raschi the batter bounds it off to the right of the plate out of play lose and ours in the background occasioned by the ball eluding the grasp of some World Series patron trying for souvenir and someone else winding up with it oh hi ball one one in one now log one ball two strikes a little roller off the glove after short up with his race Crips over to Hodgins Raschi out with lows getting an assist on the play race to Hodgins rashia slowness of foot made that play possible just as in the case of Campanella when he was up his comparative slowness of foot enabled that Rizzuto to get that ball over the mines even or pull him off gave minds a chance to get back one down Gil McDougald grounded to third in the first inning a ball on at the plate art Passarella um firing Larry gets on firing in first place like all over the outside corner bill McKinley umpiring it second of the American League babe Panelli at third national league down the left-field line that's down the right-field line dusty boggess bow line umpire down the left-field line jim honochick of the american league one ball two strikes on MacDougal run out there dinning no score ball to another curb I pop up off to the left of the plate Campanella and Cox moving over campy says he'll take it and do down and here's Phil Rizzuto hopped out in the first inning Therese ball one breaking stuff does the lab side does not feature any trick deliveries got a good fastball curve and changeup change of pace little roller foul down the third baseline Frank Crosetti coaching at third recovering the ball Billy Cox playing in very closely on the event of a button guarding that third-base line no runs no hits no errors no one left on and so at the middle of the third inning the score is Yankees nothing Dodgers nothing last half the third inning sixth game of the World Series Dodgers leading in games three to two top of the Dodger order Billy Cox Billy hit a pop fly double the left in the first inning no score good fastball in that no balls two strikes ground ball hit the McDougal one away Cox out McDougald imide I'm the Dodger captain and shortstop Harold B we reach the heart of the Dodger ballclub in this series particularly he has been their spark inside for a ball occasionally our field camera off to the right of home plate to the right edge of the Dodger dugout shooting at plate we'll have someone walk in front of the batboy just did there's a strike one in one you okay to see a quick blur there's a what lane tracing him Riis lines to Woodling we had to race in for it and up comes the Duke walked in the first inning Billy Martin up with the ball beautifully going to his left and the side retired no runs no hits no errors no one left on and the score 10 to 3 innings of play nothing nothing the Yankees no runs one hit no errors two left on the Dodgers no runs two hits no errors and three men left on base the pattern set for the first third of the ballgame is right in keeping with the previous five so far the Dodgers have had the lone scoring opportunity Cox opened in the first inning with a double this for you late viewers the turning point of the inning coming when Reese attempting to sacrifice him 2/3 money the ball in the air after Snyder walked Raschi disposed of Robinson and Shuba so far been a great deal of pressure and tension on every pitch but nothing developing yet a tremendous excitement but the crowd all feeling the tenses Mickey Mantle top of the fourth inning one the Sun is beating down on young 22 year old Billy Loes as it spotlights the youngsters efforts to pitch the Dodgers to their first world's title the bunt over the head the pitcher Rob's an out-there gravitons second Mickey Mantle attempting to drag one almost bunted one into centerfield get it as far as second and Jackie Robinson took it up comes Johnny Mize line two Schneider the first inning ball one inside Oh low inside ball two ball three inside another registering a mild complaint nothing nothing top of the serious about his work Yoga took a good cut at breaking stuff and the fan hollering just at his swing groundball out the Jackie Robinson up with it over the reefs for one back to Hodges away from in Paris trying to go to second Hodges fix the ball up and yogi goes into second base no double play as the relay from Reese after taking the throw from Robinson for the force at second on Mize gets by Gil Hodges there will be an error on the play most likely charged to Reese on the throw campanella talking to Billy Loes telling him not to worry about anything Bera forces my is it ii Robinson - Reese whose relay to Hodges attempting to double up Berra is into the dirt skipped by Hodges and Berra one on the second and era on the play the batter is Woodling singled to right son in the second of the fourth inning and the Dodgers have coming up Jackie Robinson George Shuba and Roy Campanella the situation Dodge's one game away from the the closeness of the score and all and the picture you're saying I think that speaks volumes low outside ball one jaci bounced to McDougald in the first inning into a force play at third there were runners on first and second time like that the inside jackie was born in Cairo Georgia and lives in st. Albans New York and his schooling on the west coast and sides taught it in one Jackie went to UCLA right like do sharp breaking stuff over the outside part of the plate Jackie didn't like call Annette Korea third strikeout for Raschi hums George Shuba grounded a second in the person Lu inside maybe and Casey Stengel pops out of the dugout on that one ran she doesn't say much right she's left a little super steps out and right she relaxes for a moment thank there's a curb Oh Jackie Robinson has struck out five times in the series first time swinging the last four times watching Durkin little nubber foul Reynolds slipping third strikes buying three times before yesterday Chuck Dressen getting the ball one ball two strikes one out last two the fourth no score well they're about Oh bought strikeout for Raschi him a big motion and pulled the string on him comes Roy Campanella grounded to short in the second inning roy campanella hi inside ball one slow curve didn't work born you can look at the people's notice how the chins on the hands out tense they are most of them Oh up cyber ball it's one of those days when they know it can all be over and with a game scoreless you can read their faces that's how they feel about their enjoying every second we hope you are too Gillette certainly died all great campanella has looked at dressing deceived you've got a green light on the three nothing pitch or not Chucky's looking back at him we'll see all right green one i foul out of play to the right of the plate upon the roof count on Campanella fouled off the bus he lie upon camp alle - on the 3-2 pitch Roy timed himself a little bit better got a piece of it and the third and short the left back into that's the third hip given up by raschi you'll notice out in front of a plate the shadow cast by the Sun behind the stands you know they aren't even notice the uneven fringe that's due to the men they can and others standing on the roof there they are outside one in one this is not official but the what I've heard I understand that this will probably go down as the series that has received the greatest coverage mediums of communication you want to be technical all the media red you say stadiums or stadium one ball two strikes I guess we have to sort or lead to tension up in here a little bit to nine there no score fourth inning Campanella on first foul ball back the first how to play in the upper deck nice catch one ball two strikes two down fourth inning no score Campanella on first base Oh five strikeouts for Raschi ron's one hit no errors one left arm for inning totals the Yankees no runs one hit no errors three left on the Dodgers no runs three hits one error and four left off Gil Hodges though he may still erupt before the series is over has had an unfortunate series at the plate nothing for 16 we're ready now for the top of the fifth inning the bottom third of the Yankee order coming up Irv Noren Billy Martin and Vic Raschi Robinson and Hodges are high in the series the individual standpoint five strikeouts the most strikeouts for a six-game series nine Jim Bottomley in 1930 when he was with the st. Louis Cardinals like Wanda Noah inside ball 1 1 in 1 Billy Loes fastball is alive right too then outside part of the plate the door and 1/4 foul ball back to third up on the roof out of play at the liner starts to go for two and decides to hold up Shuba comes in Billy Cox almost made one of the plays of the serial raping stab at that fall I believe he touched it into this glove looked to me like he did slowed it up a little you know is our belief that after yesterday's great ballgame things sorta seemed to start all of slow today all over no one gets back everybody was talking about it even the most hardened baseball reporters who have been watching that World Series for four of a century of better one of the greatest of all time a general consensus about yesterday's game somehow this sorta seems to be anticlimactic at least for the earlier innings high ball one but as this game progresses it will pick up and it's a general tempo from stand formed crowd reaction and from the standpoint of the game itself because the championship is on the line today a lot of folks in other words still numbed by a big game yesterday Billy Loes watching Noren carefully biggering with a picture up next that the Yankees may be trying to hit and run Martin does hit and run now our superimposition gives you a double look it's a high fly ball left center converge and Shuba - no one comes back down and up comes Vic Raschi as we see it this is one of those world series where both teams are great and their competitive spirits the bunt foul behind plate where because of the inevitable one must win and one must lose there is no disgrace in losing and all the power and gore in the world deserved by the winner because it has been that is a great world series there's Robinson slipping behind Noren we were following that in advance for you because a little bit out of the range of the camera now you can see Robinson moving back as the Dodgers tried to work a pickoff play in which the first baseman leaves the bag too dark toward the plate looking for the bunt where the second baseman races in behind the runner and they pitched out on the hitter and then throw down to first the bunt is to Hodges up with it the throws to second base and sought the middle of Yankees nothing the doctor and to paraphrase my last remarks for real telecasting luxury plus the valuable benefits of so many years of covering sports in his inevitable fashion let's use the old redhead red barber Thank You Meryl another case is a pot calling the kettle black all right it is no score and Vic Raschi pitching to Furillo callback high inside fastball strike one this is the fatherís we've gone in any one of the six games in this World Series without a score no swarm and fellow one for one first up last of the fifth a beautiful afternoon no clouds overhead and they cross wind which is strong blowing from the right-field corner to the left field corner it is primarily blowing in to left field Wow Vova I'll stay too big Rashi we got the anchors even when he fits the second game at the big slow inside curveball one three big curveball and this give them our six strikeouts Rush's other performance she struck out nine did you now the themes are farm and a round of applause for Billy Loes as the slender youngster he's six feet I doubt if he ways 170 pounds he's built on the ripcord lines bumps bow back on the screen boom you heard it hit right over our heads up here in the Gillette TV catbird seat at the stadium we had no protection in front of us but we were a long way behind home plate here because we are so close behind home plate we have a wire screen in other words the shades of Mel and I got together going to be with Gillette not the foul ball curve low outside ball one shado is pushing grads lifts from home plate straight out toward the mound the highest ladder want to do just wide the curved window no score I'll ball out of play down the right-field corner we have not had a runner reach third base we have had no action in either team's bullpen the ballgame is tightly held between these two central figures at the moment Raschi and Loes they are the two pitchers on both our pitches as the springfield rifle springfield massachusetts took a ball to the right side martin makes the play demise and low is up Oh Joerg on last of the fifth matters us so even that his comes up to out in the last of the fifth the Dodgers have presented just one more about it and have the Yankee turtles Oh - oh for New York or free one for Papa Billy Cox dropped in the double in the first inning drawn up from third in the third curve high outside or what our Passarella back at the plate one of the distinguished umpires that we have in the business cut ball I'm drivin a field fishing Woodling blocks growth second coffee shop and talk to super tree the now has six for twenty the Dodgers now have mustered four hits in four and two thirds innings today when in the second game they only got three hits all the way against Raschi batteries Reese where's Appa - as the most hits in the series with nine as we change the throne crash ooh stepping off the rubber grease promptly backing out we're pointing this shadow out to you Mel and I have two reasons one pictorially the second part of the effect on the game and makes it tougher on the hitter slider though outside ball one naturally with that ball coming out of the bright Sun against the mixed background of Senna field and into the shattered the hitter has more trouble no school Risa ground ball to short rizzuto runs over makes the unassisted force at second close out for the Tiffany no runs one hit so first time we've got this song without any score but at the end of five the Yankees go runs the Dodgers no runs we move along into the sixth inning for the visiting Yankees here in Brooklyn it's the top of the order McDougald Rizzuto and mantle vanilla was finishing his warm-up preliminaries when the Dodgers bat in the last of the sixth Mesa's nada Robinson Shuba lows is a very competent young man his name is spelled ello es his parents are Greek and he shortened his name some years ago and I asked him what was the original name well he said red if I told you you wouldn't know how to remember spell it or pronounce he was signed as a bonus picture right out of Astoria high school by Branch Rickey through the Dodgers two years ago under Burt Shotton but was very green then he was in the army all last year and this is the second year with Brooklyn and his third year in professional ball yell mcdougal who was the Rookie of the Year last year for the Yankees all for two today - 418 for this area take the curve after bluffing the bunt back one there is just outside my close as you've observed is Ivanova's temperament he wants that ball then he wants to throw it Kurt back to I do we have no score some up the ballgame and just the quick praise airtight pitching the Yankees dorm in it the first time that they've been in this hazardous position since the Cardinal series of 48 to hey why this is an important pitch this is the first batter up in the inning high pop fly race is under the sunglasses down he's got it run away my Google was swinging on it looked to be a somewhat high inside fastball both the Yankee bench cases tango just sat down they've been standing up there all the time that mcdougal was hitting Stangl is no stranger to Ebbets Field he not only played here was a play over this park was open but he managed here years ago and we're on the manager Boston fastball inside hence the zoo those knuckles follow up let's go Don OPA to cut the button Billy Cox is correspondingly up tight at third her wine Walter judo has 21 in this series he's the only Yankee now playing who was playing the last time that they were this dangerously out of a series pitch inside ball three in 1942 when the Cardinals had the Yankees there this way only one game even tighter leading them three games to one Cruz it all with plan it is high ball four third welcome you're Nikki stopped him as you went down to first base so the Yankees are now moving into their power batteries mantle wedding and played walked in the first inning bunted and talked to second baseman Robinson in the fourth he has seven hits for 22 at-bats waiting on deck is big john mize that fathers high outside ball one Lowe's has been a little our single directing things the Yankee bench Robinson running in from second base and Jax approached the mound is purely psychological Loes has a habit of getting a little bit mad when close pitches are not called where he wants him he has evidenced his displeasure here in this inning Robin just came over they're going down Wow right that's Lebanese one in one I just hold him first against the most dangerous base runner for the Yankees Phil Rizzuto there's a super imposition carb low inside ball two fastball is hip high into deep left center Shuba fading back sunglasses down they forgot and to mentor up two out no score and here is the storybook Pelham he's three years older than that number he's wearing which is 36 my agent over one today a fly to Center in the first inning a walk in the fourth there is a bouncer to Robinson you make the play either way and ghost the first online so at the middle of the sixth inning Boston New York nothing but for nothing the third baseman for the Yankees is McDougald Gustov is Rizzuto and Martin is a second crashing on the mound first baseman is big Johnny Mize there he is first base coach is jake pitler the top around let you see everybody matter to hit Barrow the catcher they dump I'll I'll casserole of the American League's dad Oh it's not him one of the heroes of yesterday walked in the first inning and grounded out second to first in the third today he's also but the series he's 7 to 23 boom we didn't look anymore well the picture told you the story's not a hauled off and hit run high over the 30-foot screen in the Bedford Avenue here in Brooklyn and it is one nothing favor to dodgy Robinson takes ball one my outside eight hit the third home run he's coming from batted in I've been over to today Paul's right for their first World Championship and this is their sixth attempt in a leading one to nothing and leading in Game three to two curve high inside join one to our lunch break and has now driven in the last five runs for the dot last for yesterday and the only one today Robinson a foul ball it is well that was foul because Jack slipped at the plate and have not even moved out about his box or was just a couple of inches tall two balls two strikes it's probably a good thing if there is the same heavy screen in front of water O'Malley's that box that we have in front of Maryland mayor here to jumped out of there just now Robinson a high fly ball into deep left woodling back they'd win it Baldy offer one away yard Shubin who is starting today his thought was necessitated cause of the injury to Pascoe the Dodgers now have five able-bodied outfielders including the veteran Tommy home who finished the game yesterday and the young rookie from havana cuba who is just in his first year of professional ball came up to the dodgers late from st. Paul at mundo a Moreau eek Williams who was a regular dealer in August broke his shoulder there's raschi we will have the real job on his hands if Chuvalo inside curve and it didn't crack one bad boy thank you Snyder's third home run has just tied one of Babe Ruth's records the most home runs three in a six-game series the wreckage naturally detailed a five-game series six cancer that sets about the great home-run-hitting in a world series well they for home runs hit in a four-game series in twenty eight by Lou Gehrig one ball two strikes Trek free changed up again and struck him out just as he did in the fourth inning his mouth pointed out to you seven strikeouts for raschi today 16 so far in the class second star Roy Campanella is one for two today he has four hits in the series and half of them off Raschi one nothing brooklyn Schneider continuing to write his name in big letters curveball swung on foul of understand trickle ball back to the mound so in again Matta I get the hand as he goes running out as many Loes goes after the mound mel is this dug in the little red book and discovered it's not his home run has tied another World Series record for a six-game series this is the second time in history that the two clubs have hit a total of 11 home runs Tigers have had five it's not a three of them and the Yankees have hit six and the series are 36 between the yankees and the giants that went six games 11 home runs were hit then Loes on the mound Campanella back of the plate Yankees will be sending up berra woodling and noren do you see the left index finger that is take my baron well he's not complaining he's not volunteering any information but we did get him to confess before the game that every ball he catches especially those that allo hurts that finger and he just cannot get around if they're at the plate with that back swing to the curb strike one oh hi outside but a pair of one-on-one the dodgers and snider one Yankees nothing fastball is high ball two because up in our 40 inch reflector lens time is called as Charlie DiGiovanni they Brooklyn bad boy taking carvalho sunglasses in right field the reason Carl have not been using him now would be cause from where he was the Sun was not low enough to be impinging over the roof of the stands then you can see by the shot on the infield it is setting the two on pitch Baba two balls two strikes a World Series is a tremendous challenge to the players in the umpires I'd like to say that it's been a tremendous challenge who are our camera crews here at Ebbets Field and at Yankee Stadium and they've done a great job a very complicated process and that ball moves very suddenly on you and you have no warning our compliments to the cameraman Bob all back in the cabin all's left chest waiting on deck is woodling Campanella rubbed that left chest but he didn't get up out of his crouch to to fish ball hit toward the right-field corner close to the line drops fall in front of the brooklyn bullpen get up against the role of infield coverage kundo I Drive that's trouble it's an even up ballgame and you'll get better pattern hi in the Bedford Avenue and the ball game is even Yankees a moment ago before that swing down a game and down a run but the runs are even now they are up their own scoreboard and this sets a new racket now for the most home runs hit by two teams in the six-game series well of now is gene Woodling hairball is in for a called strike but men got the first to the Yankee hits when he single in the second inning go out to centerfield his next time he is the judge to have swung strike two you could not check if this is about now the Brooklyn bullpen for the first time is active the left-handed number 16 is lehman the right-hander is johnny rutherford each his relief once previously it's a two strike count to woodling who's a little unhappy about it what a serie what a ballgame okay the ice is broken now home run each way first night on embarrass at home run by barrel by the way is his fourth World Series home run hello I'm office right close-up of loes Dempster 22 years old outside ball two as the old professors they call in casey stengel that bench must be hot he's standing up a lot today a bishop to the middle for woodling throws in and woodling hold on a crisis single through the middle the Yankees held to two hips for six innings and noron have answered back here in the seventh with two hits and one run Noren after striking out in the second single to left field in the fifth for this series is enough give you the highest Eric's in it that's all is go outside Yankees won the Dodgers won as a look over on the Brooklyn bench manager Charlie Dressen partly obscured by the post he's watching law is very carefully because he has to make a decision one way or the other whether to go with him or replace him fastball is fouled over into the Yankee dugout it just missed hitting managers single bomb strike nobody out and they bought it's a ball low start at the top and the ball falls out of his hand a ball kissed all because he was getting ready to deliver the ball and woodling works on the second and manager Dressen is enroute to the mound solos is charged with the Balch and there goes the little skipper we've done such a great job bringing this brooklyn club along all year if they bought the first we've had in the series Pinella number 39 the catcher calendar number seven talking to Lowe's situation is now changed for the Yankees for the one ball one strike count at the plate the ball moves the potential tiebreaking run to second base well what we have now like swinging Louis came down with it I'm boss to strike nobody out please that is the third Yankee to be struck out today second baseman Billy Martin is all for two he is 4 for 17 in the series runner at second base is woodling one out curve high outside no space is open home runs in rapid succession and a 1-1 tie carat is too high curve low outside ball three crank occurs at a coaching at third down in the boat then rather through the right-hander lehman the left-hander for brooklyn a strike he's judged to have swung on a high pitch check his swing back out three balls one strike that sort called hat swing is a puzzling thing for the plate umpire he is certain he's going to get an argument no matter which way he called guard he gets it from the hitter he doesn't call it he gets it from the defense a foul ball outside first Oh Trenton's account a new record for total home runs the two ball clubs has now been set for a six-game series total of 12 the Yankees have tied the pitches curve swung on a hot hot fly Venna Desmond make the back the Yankees tied their own record of the most home runs tip by themselves in a six-game series with seventh and advocate five they all record for home runs total by both 2006 game shows was another all right Vic Raschi gets a big hand his catcher just put him back on even times and he's got a chance to put himself a run-up woodling is the second base on the single in the ball too many routes Raschi is all for two today curve is it right back off the shame to the picture it's a 2-1 game for the Yankees Raschi hit that ball sodomy off our blows his shin the start of the infection account into right field for a base hit that is in every sense of the word a hip offload and it's remind you back World Series game between the Yankees and the Giants when our ball was hit off Freddie Fitzsimmons and also there was a ball hit again off fitzsimmons in a series between the Yankees and the Dodgers so the Yankee is now going to run up and Vic Raschi rods in the run himself hitting it right off of loes shin in the right field Woodling running with two outs cap at home easily and loes is being given a chance to throw a few pitches to be certain that his underpinning is all right now the Yankees needing this game to stay alive and throw it into a seven-game series all run up just a few moments ago there were a run back the Yankees to 500 but the Dodgers won 5-1 and the battle rages McDougal takes a curve low alright curve low outside ball two as you know lehman and rutherford are in the bullpen and that is indicative because it tells you that joe black is being very carefully held in abeyance for tomorrow if there has to be a tomorrow this is low outside ball three those having his troubles here in the seventh berra the two strikes on him suddenly belted one into a bit out of ebbets field into bedford avenue to tie it then came the single through the middle by woodling then loes balked on the ball fell out of his right hand as he started to pump then with two down raschi singled off loes shin to base on balls pushes raschi down the second bank for watch offload so charlie dressen is having to measure himself by trying to win today's game and yet be ready for tomorrow manager stengel is in no such position he has to think about tomorrow but he's got to think about today for example stengel could not hesitate to bring in say allie reynolds today if you needed him but he's got to get today's game or there won't be any tomorrow justin of course can hold your black back but so far he's doing now phil rizzuto hasn't been a series like this since these two clubs tangled in 47 blow outside ball one and Loes has missed now his last five pitches youngsters in trouble found ball to third tux goes to first base and Rizzuto is out well cuts open himself to the second-guesses he could have stepped on third but he chose to throw so the yankees rally and in the middle of the seventh inning the score is New York to Brooklyn one and they are moving into the last of the seventh inning Vic Raschi now the strongman and he has a one-run lead to depend as the Yankees must have this ballgame if we play again tomorrow raschi and berra berra who opened up the seventh and got it quickly even after Schneider had a woman in the sixth the Yankees to died is one and the batter is Gil Hodges who is all for two today both strikeout and is over 16 seven men previously in history World Series have gone all the way through playing as regulars in every game and failed to get a hit ball and raschi has been seeding big hodges curbs track one fastball inside and high strike two hi inside letter ball one and two and now as preacher Roe who pitched and won the third game of the series the opener to the stadium now beginning to get ready in the bullpen for Brooklyn loads are scheduled to hit third here in the seventh hodges bangs a curve foul outside this if justin is still needing a run when the pitcher spot comes out he may feel you'll have to go to his bench so you saw the old gentleman preacher all starting to warm up and must be plainly apparent but Justin says come what made a day if necessary black tomorrow the curve is why and not by much either do rahmel and I thought when we worked that 47 series between these two teams that we had had it but this one just picked up for that one left out fastball strike three and Hodgins was struck out for the third straight time by raschi that's the eighth strikeout for Vic giving him 17 auto one down Yankees 2 Dodgers 1 now is called burello singled in the second struck out in the fifth it's low inside ball one Raschi with eight strikeouts today nine in the second game giving him 17 so far is getting close to the record for the most strikeouts by a pitcher in a six-game series chief Pender total 20 in the six-game series making 11 ground ball wide of first mize unassisted put up for up now will it be loes or a hitter and out of the dugout steps billy low on his way to the plate laws is opportune not a Brooklyn Kitchen has gotten a base hit this is a third picture to get a hit this is the first rook on one lopat of the yankees got a base hit and drove in a run Raschi got the second pitches yet just found the seventh that you saw and drove in the second run is the Yankees lead 2 to 1 and our lows with the time went on in first for the single through first baseman Johnny Mize so Charlie Dressen is staying with his pitches he stayed with Erskine yesterday and he stayed with Lois today there is a close-up study of Delhi cops who has picked up the nickname in this series of the hands curve low outside ball one Raschi big and strong though he remembers pitching on two days rest and we getting late now into this ball game and every pitch that he's thrown has going to pitch under pressure make it three days respiration three days rest right cause what am I jake pitler coaching him first backs back into his box Maya's not holding first place closely against loes he doesn't expect him to run what fairly low volume he was rubbing that left kneecap of his where raschi gotta the base hit off of it Lauren Tybalt Lee and it's all addresses giving the signs out at third base Jim Turner they pitching coach to the Yankees it just waved down to the Yankee bullpen for the first action and it is Fingal we've got a fax of him standing in front of the Yankee dugout Russia's suddenly falling behind the anchors are going to work and that is brittle it has to be Reynold take another look at him it has to be the chief every show but I grew close running Oh the pitcher is not going to go down three and one unless they hit and run and if they audited then Cox missed it at the plate however I would think that Lowe's wants to take a knob I don't know but they either was a sign mist or confusion on the part of either loes or cox and out of the confusion lined up at second base as berra throws it all into the day the official scores give it a stolen base because if there's that flow now the tying runs at second and loes is credited with a steal well something went wrong and then wound up alright if something went wrong for the yankees the 3-2 pitch to cox is hung on a mystery so for the second straight time nine strikeouts in the game karate and at the end of seven innings it's the yankees two and the dodgers one well went in front of an open microphone as well as acting cameras you hesitate to take a guess but if I had to depend on I would guess that loes got confused and thought that 3 1 pitches now is a 3-2 pitch there's loans back on and his trouble down the seven including having raschi bust one right off of his leg Campanella back of the plate as the throw down to robinson reached the sharp stop football and there is preacher roe who's had a pretty good amount of time to start throwing and he's throwing seriously the Yankees to the DA just one you saw rentals get up a moment ago other words when you are behind is the Yankees are you don't hold anything back rattled was up just a moment ago had raschi flip it well strike phryges utility infielder with a mint running down to the bullpen to help out mantle hit the high fly ball deep left center field Vulcan alibi the Yankee bench well.all record for home runs hit by a single team as well as by both teams in a six-game series have been shattered now is Johnny Mize who is over to today the yankees lead 3-1 let up curve is over football strike sixteen Rutherford is 50 Rho is 28 my that's a high foul back out of play we'll take another look down if they put them both in something significant Rowe has stopped drawing and they go back to lehman rutherford which means roe and black for tomorrow pitch is high ball one you play a ballgame of course by The Situation's to front you batter by batter but at the moment Desson thinking must be roe in black or black and rose tomorrow my sister called all aha pop-up broadridge Hodges makes the cut and my eyes out well here is yogi berra who primed the Yankees scoring puck when he hit the home run cut it up at one and one it is Berra the Yankees have hit eight home runs which is the new record for any team in a six-game series the Dodgers have hit five crab is over and the 13 hit jointly by two squads in a six-game series establishes a new record by two right now it's the ballgame the yankees ahead 3-1 thank you hi inside or what at home run of mappers by the way with his eight hip he has the most of any of the Yankees Bera has six ball to right-center madam right graceful outfielder come on out this was one ball game that you didn't have to ask the managers who was going to pitch tomorrow you knew that Stengel was going to come with raschi today followed with Reynolds if he had to and then if he won the ball game comeback with rebels tomorrow unless he had to use him up today and you knew that Dustin was going to go with Lowe's and withhold your black against the seventh game eventuality here's Woodley Paul strike nothing in Mike he also saan the boat then the Chris Charlie was going to use roll then decided hold him back against meeting him tomorrow inside ball one they paid attendance you just come down thirty thousand and thirty seven thirty thousand and thirty seven paid foul ball one ball two strikes you want to do that's far wide to undo grab on the outside hi before this is welcome to five giving up by Lowe's Quadling thinking over it first this has been a painful series for woodling you've had a groin injury he's playing and the hitter is noren struck out swinging in the second single to left in the fifth took a bird strike in the seventh two hits for seven drove the ball in the right field line drive single follow-up with it and woodling holding at second base so with two down the yankees ahead 3-1 Yankees are threatening for more runs the first and second for the Yankees three runs seven hits and no errors for the Dodgers one run six hits and one error the faithful as they call the fans here at Ebbets Field had hardly a chance to smack their lips over snot as home run in the sixth and berra homered in the seventh then with the runner at second raschi singled off loes legs billy martin six Fattah inside ball one then open up the 8th inning a home run by Matt oh yes tremendous power very high inside ball two those 111 lost aid in the pennant race - ball cut off the hand Charlie Dressen had no so-called stop pitcher of course of the season he had some 17 pitches that he got decisions out of get a scramble staff or you poultry the Dodgers for example only had 50 complete games pitched for them all year long Bobbo Martin began the year spring training camp by breaking an ankle fought his way along bond up direct the second baseman he's a spunky little kid groundball slowly up to third cox goes to first in time or they are while the anchors in the top of the 8th inning one run two hits and in the middle of the a score as the Yankees 3 the Dodgers 1 New York Yankees number 21 joke on my birthday you had the announcement of the public address system at Joe Collins a much better fielding first baseman than the venerable john mize takes over at first base the Yankees making a defensive switch now they're leading 3-1 the joe collins pick suburbs and mais today did not hit a ball hard he was stopped all for free you can't take away from but he's already achieved in this series the batteries reach low inside ball one and I said that Maya's having hit a ball hard he hit one in the first inning that made snot a run then he walked in the fourth grounded out second to first in the sixth and popped up the first in the eighth so he did hit one hard but didn't get one safe call strike on the outside Rhys leaves the players with the most hits for nine but he has been stopped cold by raschi today's all four three come to the curb short rizzuto flips it over to Collins and reach it up one way lastly eighth-inning the batter is Snider walked in the first inning thrown out second a person the third and then hit the home run in the sixth which put the dodgers ahead one to nothing but the pattern in both of raschi's games has been the same that ID is going ahead one to nothing and then the egg is immediately bouncing back to go out front turn high outside ball one Matta has given in the last five broken runs well the do is turn up to pee crack at super custom home run and raschi poker face Sandman bill has a one-run lead Yankees 3 the Dodgers do run out the Yankee bullpen going to work there is Reynolds Robinson hitting at the time to deep left woodling wedding and to mentor up well for the second time Reynolds has been called upon there is not a distinguish for all case you we had an extraneous noise then there was a jet high overhead you haven't then they gone the walls runs right can't attempt our Yankees pulled us out tickets box seats reserved seats standing room will go on sale right here at Ebbets Field soon the game is over we'll stay on sale until midnight then we'll be on sale again tomorrow morning at 9:00 curb is hired outside ball one want to do girl and I'm lucky Allah palm to treyvion strong it out all of the infield except second base now in the shadow of the stand Yankees three Dodgers two there's a ball drill toward left field in for the base hit hit and run on that play and mcdougald goes around the 3rd was it Oh hold equation to provoke a second the good or pull the ball belongs and Khalid rested on his way out the mouth number nine of young laws he started getting into trouble in the seventh inning one man out the Yankees setting the men at first and third and preacher Roe is being brought on to relieve lows is lifted after eight and a third and he now coming in to pitch for larger number 23 Carole the step study applause grimly unhappy young man as all preach now and up down the pulpit addressing giving his instructions how he wants matt'll fits to and how he wants the infield to play accordingly mantle of course will go up there hitting right-handed he switches this will be ROS third World Series appearance Oh get the big hand captain raised the shortstop standing at the mouth roars no hurry fuss around those are vent check something with Robinson row in 49 beat the Yankees with a shutout then he puts the third game of this series had to struggle but he wanted now he was relieving for the first time in a World Series and his third World Series appearance we can only sort of guess because we don't know just how the thing operates but I want to ask mel a question mel even though with reynolds coming on to relieve and having to work an ending in a third as a minimum in the event that the yankees win this but do you think this finger will come right back with runners again to start him against your black tomorrow i have no doubt of it personally although Casey has been known to do some odd things in maneuvering but successfully over the last four years but I don't see how in the world he can do anything but come back with Allie Reynolds so your thought is if the Yankees pull this one out to throw this into a seven-game series we'll see the two starting pitchers going at it again those that open it up rather than black you'll have to do it justice you remember spec Shea and the 47 series had to come back to the third time he didn't last very long but he came back he has to well here we go this one is still up for grabs Yankees leading three two I'm leading because the third run was mantle's home run his last at-bat roe pitches him high outside ball one the infield is up I just holding the bag against rizzuto at first at my Google on up there that's wrong with med bay almost going away but for the hands down there third I bought ooh hi outside ball three got the idea on the basket I'm expecting a squeeze now the squeeze is on roe he's behind free and on before and Madeline and I gather now that dressen's idea was not to let mantle hit one and casey stengel is calling back your columns talk to him the bases are loaded one man out and Aries first baseman Joe Collins he's to be the head and here he comes Challenge is all for 11 up first first at-bat today to go for my eyes with the glove and ending a go Iran is everywhere you look three on one out infield in tight curve low outside ball one we're all working slowly carefully Bauer is warming up in the Yankee both man may go into the outfield they're both too decision you got a flash just now the Brooklyn both man where these two pitchers lehman and rutherford aback warming up roe is visibly upset on that decision reese takes the ball roll wouldn't receive it I'm five Passarella I wants to examine the ball and it's alright what everything is on the hair-trigger edge normos personal and professional prestige is a stake for these players to say nothing about 22 or $2300 which represent the difference between the winners and they lose a players share foul ball turn one basic allotted matt'll it varies rizzuto at second McDougal at third Yankees leading by a run I'm trying to get some night thinning insurance so our five ball three then one and Rho is unhappy Wow this quite a situation bases-loaded big balls one strike one out top of the name Ron ball hit foul outside first to start three into Oh on the street to pitch the runners are not going to be just cut loose and going only one man is out Rhian ballin loss him up now two men are gone and as I think back over the top of this ninth-inning and all came on with Madol are very dangerous hitter in a switch-hitter going up there right-handed row was not closed with anyone in his four pitches and I think the dressing ottoman the throw just for Weidman dismantle wanted to reach farm okay but otherwise walk him put him on and take his chance on first left-hand hitting collins who has gone like the brooklyn first baseman without a hit and then have rope it's the gara so here is the yogi who belted a home run for the yankee first score in the seventh playing despite that injured left index finger infield back to our curve low outside and campanella down into the dr. blocker now I was pointing to that ball not for campanella's sake but pointing to it for the baserunners sake in other words there it is fellas go run well the stairs has gone from one big moment to another so we're just dispense with the agitation okay hold on and the Guevara one ball one strike friends when you realize how much is up for grabs whenever you have a close pitch the umpire back of the plate has got to get a score in other words if he'd call that one the other way roll would have come storming off there you wonder why it is men want to take that abuse and beyond players curve swung on hit the right CEO back code to run all makes the catch they suspect because it was right into the Sun you could see the timing on his glasses so roll comes on and gets the Yankees out he wash mantle and I hit delivered oh that's not to be scored that way strikes out calendar after being behind on him three and one and then gets car on a line drive to right it's a real pleasure for the folks at Gillette friends to send you these great sporting events
