He lined one right at him in the 9th inning

No replay, though.

Rivers' slash line that year looks like a typo .312/.327/.432 . Good for 123 OPS+ in that park & era, though.

That was Sparky Anderson's idea because he knew Rivers couldn't hit the other way.

Louis Missouri Lee Weyer my City Michigan well they have really spread around though wires in Decatur Georgia two mural lives in Tucson Billy Williams Belmar New Jersey Deakins in California Remington Brown Deer Wisconsin and Davey Philips Lake st. Louis as Figaro who will be the starting pitcher for the Yankees figure on the top winner for the Yankees this year might have been the most consistent pitcher all year long a lot of people ask Billy Martin why not Holtzman why not coming back with hunter well we asked Billy Martin why he is starting for this important fourth game the man of the mound right now in that quadrant Ed Figueroa number one because he deserves his start in World Series because he's one of my best pictures on my staff if I have to go to the whole bullpen tonight I will but Figaro has done a great job for me I'm very proud it was a word he used that I liked he deserved to start he really did Joe and I said he had a lot of pressure on him the last two games of the regular season they televised back to Puerto Rico and he would have been the first Puerto Rican I have won 20 games in the big leagues and Tony tried too hard you know what happens when you try too hard the slider doesn't slide in the curve doesn't break so I think he's about doing his last four starts he hasn't won so the averages are in his favor he last pitched on October 13 that's a fifth game of the playoffs he allowed four runs eight hits in seven innings he also started the second game to playoffs he lost 72 how about that little hacks they try to go at a chicken rooster who do ha ha ha somebody threw a rooster off her Biak in the red dugout cleaning it off and Game four crows divas moving it off oh goody but no says third-base umpire Lee Weyer roses to 411 down the left-field line a fair ball this will be extra bases to base hit ground rule double I was two base hit all the way for Rose and I just going to say Joe the Yankees that kept rose and Griffey off the bases early in the ball game and they were the men that was supposed to get on and score a lot of runs now they're getting on I was going to make it that much tougher for the Yankees well here is Griffey heard you talking to Joe before the ballgame the little spot you did Phil talking about the great execution power the speed all those combinations here they've got a chance right now see if Griffey either drags a bunt or pulls the ball to get deep to third with less than two outs he's pulled nettles in the third but on that one is he pretty good butter to me excellent morals is in no-man's land isn't he guys sure has comes in too quick Rosa come down he's got that swing filled with his speed he chops it in the dirt then he takes off running we've seen him beat out balls already in this series you got to play him shallow then he hits a guy it a big play in the ballgame as far as the Yankees to pick up them around Wow cow remains a strike to front of home plate looks like it's been pretty well soaked with Figueroa pitching a sinker ball pitcher hits that artificial surface swing he's allowed to get some grub worms there it's pretty soft to strike pitch one ball two strikes nothing wrong with it a groundskeeper can help you if you have a sinker ball picture obviously he's going to fix you a lot of ground balls so you slow it up you slow the ball up the two or three feet in front of home plate so what you do is just wet it down a little bit we put on the foul line the whole the balling bouncing ball Rose is going to go to third they got a shot they got him crap and now he's motioning for Griffey to move over there second base umpire Davey Phillips the Cincinnati Reds for the first time this series pulled the rock it is and again not to go to base running by Pete Rose Stanley very alertly gets the runner now they do the right thing as opposed to the other day look at Pete signaling for Griffey to come over at set one show they got him and they've got Griffey hung up alive nobody went over to cover first nation he gone back he's got three feet from the line of the tag there and he worked rather than that folks call them out I've said it I could pick the Yankees up time in the series I tell you that look like a fire drill on a rainy day everybody was moving if you score next lay one six five three four Rose was trying to coach Griffey to come on over there to play perfectly one tag and I may cut one ball at one strike Phil Figueroa the hottest throw on your staff starting pitchers oh yes this year catfish was last year but he didn't have you know he had trouble with his on was your little tendinitis two balls one strike two outs nobody on getting started Chambliss surrounds it takes it himself so we go to the bottom half of the first Cincinnati nothing Yankees coming the back there you see Gary Nolan 15 and 9 in 1976 a three point four six earned run average it was 15 and nine in 1975 how about his control Joe great control he's had exceptional control each the last two seasons leading a regular national league started each year with an average of only 1.2 walks per nine innings even better average in 1976 on a 27 base on balls including three intentional from 239 innings and here comes rose and again moving in closer he's closer than ever it really is every ball game is Brooklyn another step or two in on River let's say Rivers tries to peck it by what goes to sway like he should look at he's right in on maybe Billy Martin had a little chalk with rivers rivers can wit the Batman I tell you that foresters playing very shallow and left Nick as it many balls one hop off that left-field wall he's openly stance Phil she has his face in the picture Lord he was the other games ball misses one ball one strike if Petros gets any closer I'd have to put pinstripes on two balls and one strike that tell you some Washington play that closely that they have a lot of confidence or a good insurance man we look at in no way a line drive that he can protect himself with it's right at him popped up Petros and concepciĆ³n not concepciĆ³n takes charge one out this telecast is authorized under television rights granted by Major League Baseball solely for the entertainment of our audience and any publication reproduction retransmission for commercial or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is prohibited here's why Whitey's to pretend Joe Morgan Barbosa in time two up two down that's statistic we showed you earlier really tells her story as a team the Yankees are hitting 222 the Cincinnati Reds 327 Thurman Munson Munson his 5 for 13 he has five hits Chambliss has four two leading hitters no score bottom of the first you it's a building just built like a fireplug ashore well Johnny that was interesting what he said I heard him on the interviews they had about being embarrassed not wanting to be embarrassed one ball one strike Thurman Munson Gary Nolan some consider knowing the best pitcher on this staff he has an excellent straight chains curveball and the kind of guy when you start looking for he throws the fastball right by you two balls in the strike the count one thing he's got filled he's seen it around this park a long time he can keep the ball away from you whether you're right or left handed hitter they get to the big part of the ballpark that's a part of morale success hit a lot of home runs off of it because he doesn't walk Benny they don't usually cost a ball game out of play two balls two strikes one thing you know if he pitches Munson out there he'll go with it Billy Martin what happened him up over the winter you feel I saw him I started seeing the clubhouse he was going into the sauna well he looks like he could use a trip to summer camp is really thin he is really down he lost all that weight women off the handle it may drop in or more can give the chase it's a base hit for Munson who prefer Munson well the Yankees have been talking about all the bloopers the Reds have been getting off him so they dunk one in there see what Morgan said about that though yeah we've been in those 370 footmen here is Chambliss Chambliss four for 12 in his series no score bottom of the first ball one Yankees have been looking for somebody to pop one early to get them out ahead one of these ball games here pitchers a little break so much pressure on their defense either that's a base hit left-center field thinking hard they're going to credit year get a chance right now to see munching a terrific break he gets on first base he didn't need a coach on this right now he picks up his folks tech Hauser Geronimo in spite of his strong God did not give Davey Concepcion Odin could relay throw it was a hopper to him here comes Geronimo throw look at Geronimo's arms usually stronger than that little bit off line setting up in that cutoff play they took the indirect route fell yep good hustle by Thurman with the W Silas money is Vick house of the third-base coach coming all away able to score from first this crowd looking for something a loser concepciĆ³n fine play time what a play save the run took a face it away Dave concepciĆ³n so at the end of an inning it's New York one Cincinnati nothing once again as other times as soon as we see a great defensive play by Cincinnati red this time concepciĆ³n to save another run I don't know who could have done that other than that guy Tony Kubek see only go ha ha ha boy I couldn't believe so quick and so fast strike one to Tony Perez that ball was by him kind boy I know it gotta let me treat hop to foot off the handle shamless were taken himself up number one I both of you guys could have made that play I mean let's forget the humility but I want to ask you is when a ball like that you just you figure you got a chance are you just going to go all out you got to go all out because as Tony said he was playing Carlos may straight away which made it more unbelievable and then to get the in-between hop and you got to have a strong arm to throw him out one thing you're thinking of also with a man in scoring position I've got at least knocked the ball down when he's at second base keep the ball go to the out play save the run New York leading one to nothing dan Driessen who is 5 for 11 let's be a role white coming in to so playing tricks with that ball on high in the air well the gust was supposed to be something like 20 to 25 miles an hour see it with the flags top the Yankees is the old facade Tony memory used to be oh yeah up a deck in right field is that a reproduction or the original facade taken from somewhere else reproductions as hell hate to say it but it is the tradition is still there George Foster foster 5 411 Figueroa is playing games with him now Foster's driven in three runs the Reds have scored in first or second end of every cause like Munson he makes all pitches wait done yet to see foster Jim kaat of the Phillies ball one stock I would like to have seen Gibson encaustic yeah linkie Ryan two balls in the strike Phil I was looking at the home runs allowed by Figueroa he does not give up too many's at a history of very few home runs is this fastball st. Cloud's he's got a good sinking fastball in that good slider look at big Johnny Bench three balls and one strike where you said big Johnny Bench he's going to do a benefit with Bob hopefully tell you about a little bit later on more about it but he's gonna sing big bad Leroy Brown hit song I hear that foster outside draws the base on balls it puts him on and brings up Johnny Bench bench six for 11 he was the victim of that great play by grant Jackson who told me he did that a lot know what he said I started laughing he said he caught one the back of his knee off Perez a line drive just where his knee bends he said the ball stuck there man Jackson backhanded that ball on him one nothing New York leading top of the second inning two men out foster should first a lot of play Phil Figueroa looks very deliberate as he lifts his leg up giving the runners a lot of time which make it a bit tough for months and who may be going out there now to say hey if you're going to lift your leg up that slow you put it back up third you're absolutely right Joe Thurman has to remind him about that very few of the Yankee pitchers can hold runners on even the left hand pitchers we have and it makes it more difficult for Thurman he's been charged with a lot of errors because he's had to get rid of the ball you know as you know you don't steal on the catch he is stealing the pitcher one strike the count he's brought the first back and her standing up bruce fremming the umpire a couple guys on the bench watching all of this plug out a third base and that's Morgan except she Oded Rafi they want to see a few moves over the first base they want to try and pick something up in the event they get on during this ball game I don't miss much you see rose and Perez Gullit your blanket a lot of play 2 strikes on Johnny Bench so Phil I was one of the big things I had a chance to glance briefly at the Cincinnati report and one of the big things they had was they timed every pitcher on the Yankee staff how quickly he gets rid of the ball to home plate what his late kick was going home what was the first movement he made go in the first case and it's the most detailed thing it goes with six pages on that Renda covering fosters out we go to the bottom of his second New York one Cincinnati nothing as we look at City Hall a beautiful shot his net luck when you pitch out you have to know something and get a good ball to handle Munson does eye level and he's in perfect position to get rid of that ball he was about his balance watch Randolph now that for a rookie this kid right in front of the bag he's got a tag and before his foot hits the bag and I tell you for a rookie that kid does it all good play here is Greg Nettles New York we need you want enough they were in the bottom of the second look at our beautiful shot from the helicopter live Yankee Stadium game for Cincinnati Peter nothing for wonder nothing in this game one strike on levels it's one four nine out of play following the first two pitches to metals throwing change ups as zachary did to the left-handed hitters attending nettles kind of lulls you to sleep he is not a streaky hitter and since that he hits in a lot of games in a row but when he gets hot in one game he has really helped the angle one ball two strikes Geronimo in centerfield we need uhz n't play that far over and right-center for Nettles there you see the swing Nolan Perez one out for that mixin mad when you do that change what do you throw every pitch a changeup see why I think it's room for one out Oscar gamble is the batter and we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network gamble 1 for 4 strike one Mel Allen longtime Yankee announcer throughout the first ball Joe DiMaggio threw it out last night DiMaggio in a ballpark tonight on with a great heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey popped up Pete Rose the way he slaps at this ball I didn't have nerve enough did your eyes scare me two outs and it brings up Willie Randolph Randolph is 1 for 10 all one Joe this kid had a great shot of being the Rookie of the Year then he was very different time and they got three months and so they got a toughen up shallow centerfield Geronimo coming in makes the play he thought that ball was hit much harder than jianying at the end of two full innings New York one Cincinnati nothing there you see it if you've ever been in New York our helicopter is coming from the south towards Yankee Stadium beautiful sight here Johnny Bench these closes stance that isn't something he struggled all this dial your water we finally found a little knack of swinging the bat and tiny lip it seems to be working for him I think that's great when you can adjust you know when you're having a bad year and you try something different popped up in en Phil Randolph is taking charge benches up he got away with a pitch there brings up Geronimo Geronimo is 2 for 9 in the series Red's opened up with a double and then Griffey bounced one to the shortstop Stanley and in a run-down they tagged out rose and Griffey for a double play and Morgan ended the inning by grounding out Yankees score them on the first syllable by Munson double by Chambliss Geronimo swings and misses that's a base hit left-center field Mickey rivers cuts it off stumbles a bit but Geronimo a big turn boys get the track shoes out because you know they're going to be going ok right there Geronimo originally signed with the Yankees he's down at Fort Lauderdale then he was drafted by Houston they let him get away oh I don't know what's a good thing he's the strong silent type to because he wouldn't have a chance to give any press conferences what's up that's right everybody got him oh I love it one nothing New York leading one to third one man on concepciĆ³n takes a good look at sugar and set the Geronimo time they had a play on he's just not sure we'll the grounds keeping in the first base area well they couldn't have done that to what that area could they faced certainly could let's say they did but they tried all the speed down you talked earlier Joe made a good point about the soft spot in front of hope play that obviously is wet all one I tell you you can your groundskeepers a tenth man in the lineup it's boss and Jean fostered over Chicago if you could put quicksand down and put it down you lose two three infielders in the first weekend just can't get the footie versus tried many different things you can do you can slope the foul lines you can put an extra coat on the foul lines you can let the grass grow high you can soften in front of the plate to do soften in front of the first base where they get their leads million thinking David he's got a big lead two balls in one strike I had to pick a pitch I picked it right here gotta say he's going the young guns he calls for a pitch out yeah Munson's in the box you can't call a pitcher I tell you sit back there sometimes and you're dying you know the guys go when you can't do anything about it it's an excellent job figure I'll never gave Munson a chance Starly was covering this time thinking Davey was going the opposite way he beat the pitcher that time Phil absolutely yes as Jill mentioned Figueroa lifts that leg up and hesitates and Munson had to get rid of a Jew quickly I think a real good throw would have gotten um Tony could have been close but when you have to get rid of it so fast you got to give up accuracy you throw it in hope it's a six steal for the Reds nine attempts one layin out out of play would you have ever pitched out the situation like only if the miniature would let me and tell me I would look over and asking can I pitch out because I tell you if he doesn't run and the pitcher loses the game he'll blame it on my pitch out that you threw his rhythm off and all that worst thing you can do is call a pitcher the only guy give you a lot of back and he's listening tonight is Durocher to Russia was good to catchers a lot of support from the manager good job two balls in this dress this Billy call Muslim on this ballclub yes he does he does a lot of managers when you look over there there at the water cool hi Billy in every pitch there you see Billy Martin the Yankee bench Cincinnati with the threat Geronimo is on its second Sparky Anderson Joe Morgan heroes who doubled his first time up one man out bouncing balls shamblers why'd he go to second Ferrothorn close nice play by Stanley so that puts Geronimo at third Rose it first it is again filling I got to ask it did you ever get a guy at third base on this but I tried it several times never could get something I got a couple of guys Tony but they were taking that big turn which you have to do you know that is a good play by Chandler's to I didn't think he was going to go with that runner going and a big lead concezione had at first base two men out Geronimo is the therm roses at first New York leading one to nothing with the top 10:50 the battery works safely you saw at that time strike one this is me this guy's such a good hitter and he's his stiff on swinger this hitting instructor the Reds instructor Kluszewski thinks it's some day and he's got speed we know that he might hit 20 25 home runs that's how strong he is the cloud Randolph will have to make the player first it is I didn't get drippy but they've been bottom of the third one nothing New York boy Randolph had to do everything right on this play the brawl was stopped from going to centerfield by Figueroa then was blocked his view he had to feel the ball cleanly get rid of it quickly and accurately to get home so beautifully it's they doing what Stanley Alwine no one has only pitched twice in the last three and a half weeks look nineties October 1st when 5 and 2/3 on the 12th telling ball run ball - he doesn't walk many as we pointed out exceptional control in one block for nine innings in 1976 to get a Stanley user very patient like Roy wipes on Oh force there it is a base on balls Larry Shepard the pitching coach front with the glasses Sparky Anderson behind him never won an outfit with the river is not hitting and maybe Billy going for an insurance run you never know he may have remember sacrificing it's still early but Rivers had done much for him offensively so far but for me up at you oh yes absolutely although Mickey's tough to double I think only once all year he's hit into a double play on the ground you there's a tough play for a base runner a guy tries to bunt that way Alan Roth points out that during the season rivers had only to sacrifice bunts he doesn't bunt a sacrifice he tries to beat him out foster in left field taking charge comes in and makes the play so there's one away Stanley's at first one nothing New York leading bottom of the third Roy white the batter white bounced out Morgan to Perez back in the first inning 2 for 11 in the series like to see Billy start a couple base runners here for maybe pick an opening in the infield get somebody covering white can handle about well he's got Stanley down there with full speed try to roll doesn't strike up that's how the Yankees won the pennant really the first three quarters of the season you know Nolan is going to be around the platy where the walks anybody took me to the strike zone fastball on the outside corner Gary Nolan Stanley first one man out ball one strike Dick Howser coaches at third he gets his signs from Billy Martin Elston Howard coaches it first room whipping makes the play on the warning track two outs Josh made him reach for the ball a little bit Vinny the ball may have tail away and he just had a flick at it at the end here is Thurman Munson Munson singled to right his first time up came around the score when sham was doubled in the left we left or we're in the bottom half of the 36 to 14 Oh ball one Munson now has a 13 game hitting streak he hit in the last four games of the regular season and nine postseason games looking at the boxcars on my squad cars of the previous three game they've given him very little car center-field mostly right field keeping it away on them and they go inside they waste it inside out of the strike zone one ball one strike two outs misses two balls in the strike New York one Cincinnati nothing family third Stanley elite at first drive base hit right field Stanley is rounding second he's going to hold up Munson another base hit 2 for 2 tonight fred partek in the first show we get on the baseball world said with men on bases he just goes to right field is a tough man and sure enough you put somebody on base inches lines at ball the right boom that's right just as Tony said they pitch him out there and Munson as a smart hit it here's Chambliss who doubled to drive in the Yankee run 5 for 13 in this world series he's got a hitting streak 17 game hitting streak film Oh not cheating so tonight he's got an 18 game winner moved out right you always better dollars we had a good cut but he fouls it off strike to you an amazing thing about mr. Rizzuto he does never memory to son of a gun they got all right up there because you look at the scorecard tio fo WL which means wasn't looking it's amazing it doesn't remember right an 18 game hitting streak no one take a little bit of time out there one nothing New York leading bottom of the third two hours Stanley's at second Munson first so Morgan my body's safe having just to get back Morrigan mumbles it and he laid back and got caught the fall playing him absolutely Joe Tony mentioned that he said he's not used to this the espera turf you get the good bounces pow keels one of the guys as we watch this replay who said he saw them in San Francisco on dirt surfaces there's not as good a feeling team he said they get into artificial surface habits you can right back on the ball cuz it gets to more quickly you do it on this you get those funny in between hops so the bases are loaded Oh Stanley's occurred monsters at second Chambliss is a first Yankees and AB situations similar to this before this loyal servant haven't been able to get that big base hit with minutes for a position with two outs to keep the rally going Carlos May we whooping it up may was robbed of a base hit by concepciĆ³n in the first inning to save the run he's looking for his first base hit this world bases are loaded coming out both been started for Cincinnati makes the play and that ncat so as we complete three innings New York one as we look at Carnegie Hall Cincinnati nothing as we look live at a beautiful sight Empire State Building right smack dab in the middle of beautiful New York bring you the local boy the scooter Phil Rizzuto yep pretty soon we'll be seeing King Kong again up on the Empire State Building and bringing that movie back shmurda with bananas Umbria all right is Joe Morgan ready to lead off Joe bounced out to first his first time up and the Yankees know they got to keep this man off the bases one more thing Yankees leave one inside two balls in his strike rerun we can close the strike zone I I know I've said it before but Cecil Upshaw has the best description his eyeballs are just not that far from the ball even on the low pitch he can really control it easily so compact that is a great shot when you get this close up as he Joe's eyes he looks him over well he's on and all the Yankees whether this guy have set the whole infield you know Tony when used to get a fast man on first the cheat a little bit more on second base or shortstops and a little bit closer to the bag it opens up the whole third baseman comes in on occasion he's doing a little grounds work down there he's marking off his spot kicking away some soft dirt at first base he measures that lead filling livers today they like them I know 18 feet off a right-hander 15 feet off the left-hander over to the inch do that maybe quick pitch once in a while with Tony Perez Perez bounced to first his first time up Thanks lead one-nothing top of the fourth nobody let's enter rivers doors going to get it throw by Mickey that's the best almost over the head that's the best role Rivers's made all year Morgan at first base when he takes his lead he just looks at the picture and very defiantly and he says here's the throw of rivers the uncorked just to finish up Morgan always says some pictures give me trouble but nobody can stop it look like Munson wanted to pitch out there didn't it got it out little low for a pitcher Driessen flied to left field his first time Morgan if he's going to steal with steal with that left-handed or up there there he goes and Munson doesn't even throw it it's a good thing he didn't want a jump he had we hit about four steps and Figueroa still had the globe you know every target says he down around Cranitch they're dead oh look at who three four he had four steps he Figueroa had the ball he does it with a quick start he says he doesn't have the speed once he gets going like Brock or Cedeno he's got to get a good quick jump Morgans 2 for 2 and as a pop-up and Thurman Munson he's one of the best funnies two away Morgan two out of two in stolen bases but there are two out now and George Foster who walked and was caught stealing in the second inning very seldom see George smile that he's smiling now Oh maybe this guy's really built our speed he's about the most low-key guy you'll ever meet all right 30 inch waist oh it's like jolly Keller in the fourth grade the last time every 30 neutral lying face it to left field and Morgan will score it's a tie ballgame white will not even throw to the plate and forced to hit that so hard Stanley thought he was going to get it look at Stanley hands on his hips and just took off what an instance of the speed of this ballclub white doesn't even try so they've cut off a run defensively when Concepcion made a good play and now with the speed on the stolen base and a good jump off second base by Morgan they tied up but foresters fourth RBI of the series and see why he led the National League in runs batted in well it was a great shot we head on the replay because you saw it come off the bat and you saw how just how close Stanley Keene yep game of inches so it's all tied at 1-1 and Johnny Bench the batter Jennie popped to second base his first time Oh Kollmorgen stole our more with the help of the base if I foster how to be frustrating to a catchy Joe like Munson when a guy like that gets a break just we share the police wish we'll pull him over check his driver's license oh wait no stop one each team with one run in each team with three basics oh that's gone if it's fair hit the screen for a homerun Johnny Bench has just put the Reds out in front 3 2 1 and Figueroa got that ball where I thought is a good spot up and in his Tony said bench's new-style remaining that bad at the pitcher he timed it beautifully I don't know if that was a fastball or a breaking ball he looked like he was trying to get an infield but it didn't look like it had a lot of stuff on it like previous tackles it may have even been a hanging slider is that big call foul ball both cars in the Yankee Stadium a lot of arguments before they put those up ronimal singled and scored of a quickly the Reds are out in front three two one what am I one ball two strikes scary odor has show and Cary Grant way here gentlemen very serious there in the whole I don't know what the Stanley will get him he's gone get them a good play by the chicken French Stanley reruns for the Reg and now at the end of three and a half in Cincinnati three the Yankees won two hours special key to the best of the comedy sketches from the past quarter-century Jack Benny George birdies in Sunday night you fans in Cincinnati will see Johnny fencing bad boy Leroy Brown probaly Roy Clark nettles grounds one to right-center field Morgan over shifted item so levels bounces right back with the Yankees trailing 3 to 1 Gregg at first base that's the fourth hit for the Yankees and I'll ask a gamble the Reds lead 3 to 1 27 years of jokes oh and he gets better every time he's something but the grimness monologue I've ever heard look at us again well away Joe and Tony myself Harry Coyle Roy Hammerman all want to say hello to Jack Murphy Yankee television director for so many years the Yankee games right here at Yankee Stadium watching a game down in Flour we're going to miss by Oscar gamble popped to third his first time up nobody out in the bottom of the fourth the Yankees trying to get back in the ball game and Perez goes to second nej everybody's safe and this is something we haven't seen the red stool series that's the second error in this ballgame and one by Morgan one by consent C on press through the wall across the path of the base runner Nettles watch this may have block Davies view one of those seekers gave the target inside and then he might have lost it the ball came over the shoulder of medals I think when nettles throws his arms up Tony what's in it right there he blocked it once that runner gets between your boys like that 12 me I'll feel it stuff as a great shot all right such a nose up again now Willie Randolph let's see if goodie Martin has them bunny here nobody out really an excellent buddy by the center his first time up on that pitch it's low ball one roses not in a third he's barely in on the infield grass there's people except seoane and Morgan have shortened up nobody out one area Nolan Bobbo and filling in closest to you ha and third baseman for some reason nettles did not slide I think he would have been safe Evita slit your life Philip he had gotten down Petros was standing straight up he may have had a chance this is a tough play when you're trying to get a good jump off second base the guy there bunts through it good play by Davie also I don't think you defeating anyone all was there he was looking to be falling over and he was just steadying himself he was ready for a third to play ray up Willie Randolph having his problems to the 17 and the playoffs and 1 for 11 in the series they call that pitcher strikes on his just nipped the corner Randolph called out and quickly there are two outs ow breaking ball there it is we caught it it wasn't a strike that were across the plate it probably was last two days for the first time in the series Cincinnati has given some things to the Yankees they haven't taken advantage nope Fred Stanley a walk takes a ball if they put a string on every gift they give it to me taken away they give you an air zip they picked you off digging air last night Zachary fix rivers off they got every gift tied onto the strength it's a right field but right there is Griffey and makes the catch so nothing across and at the end of four innings since the Reds three the Yankees won the preceding message was furnished by Major League Baseball I never saw it like that for eight speed rows concepciĆ³n once taken a look at the umpire at the ball on deck Pete Rose concepciĆ³n walked his first time little on the red sea leading here in the top of the fifth first three games the Yankees didn't get any breaks here they've had two or three breaks but I've been able to take advantage a ouch ER and nettles throws him out run away that might have been tough in Cincinnati that ball might have bounced over his head for me meat has double the left and bass sigilyph or spa right one but Phil and Roy white is there it's true a tough-love feel they're at the stadium but Roy plays it very well and now Ken Griffey bounced into a very unusual double play as we look at that the glove field area out there that Roy has to cover that was thrown out on a good play smash or Figaro his glove and Randolph like line we have a griffey very well just one hip oh and to there's just no rest for pitcher is there with his outlaw club with the BH nine hitters nine runners look like on two all the change-up back into the crowd last inning looked like Figaro is out of the jam Morgan at second a two-out single in a homer led through out front three two one it's got a piece of two out nobody on nettles makes the catch so they're down in order and now at the end of four and a half is the rx-3 in the Yankees one where you see Robert L Howsam the president the Cincinnati Reds next to him is mr. Louis Nippert who is chairman I see one thing for Oh Bob weatherman said it was 51 degrees you couldn't prove it by him I'm making livers to lead it hot to short flied to left so naughty two big breaks in the third and fourth inning oh he fooled him on that change it's unbelievable at rose and take that bat away from River the way he's done this whole series don't have to put blinkers on Mickey try to slap that rhyme it was in on it he's just made him change his hitting style completely ed up just forced a minute psyched him out Pete's left and he knows it it's not away with it the whole series still on two ain't no River swings it a lot of bad pitches in the scouting report they said throw them some change ups make sure they're bad pitches you go after almost anything near the strike zone it this kid could hit 340 350 if you made off that pitch now it has a little looper that's going to drop in he's getting every break imaginable tonight but they've got to take advantage of it sooner or later locus tonight spread change of pace River School but he had enough left but just think it out in right-center field right field hi Roy White has bounced to second and flied to right batting left-handed hit three twenty right-handed he had an off year to natural right-handed hitter as to about the switching he's and all the kids in our neighborhood switch he said it was the thing to do we played Ted Williams one day John imagine the next day must have been a tough lineup from his back speaking of switch hitters its Mickey Mantle was 45 on Wednesday and whitey for 48 today one ball on Roy white nobody out Ridge lead three to one here in the bottom of the fifth on one I don't think Nolan throws anything down the heart of the plate quite a story fill a couple of years ago he thought he might never pitch again something troubling with right shoulder they say every ballgame the last year and a half has got a little bit faster here in the year Mickey would steal Billy would let him steal even though the Yankees would behind nope right to George Foster in shallow left one man out that'll bring up Thurman Munson had said earlier the enchanters have been doing it all for the Yankees in this series 2 for 2 in this game score the Yankees only run I was back in the first inning and it was really great they interviewed him for about 45 minutes reporters throwing all kinds of questions at him one man out hey buzz all right really got a running to today Nolan never came and pitch right away what's this let's watch Mickey go with a high knee kick I don't know who can run faster than this guy once he gets in full gear feds made a perfect throw but he just outran the ball yep here it comes right at you this is what you'd see if you're taking the throw down to second base with that first shot that we had you could count the steps and you can't give the guy four steps and still hold the ball and throw him out even Joey Bench can't do that and that was the first Yankee steal of the series 101a Munson now I believe that breaks Johnny bench's streak of throwing men out and playoffs and World Series or steel in 26 consecutive game most seasoned I wanna three two one it's another base hit three to two and Watson has along with Chambliss been the whole Yankee attack Thurman Munson has got that golden bat tonight Joe Morgan feel very mad at him South he was kicking the dirt he took a couple of steps to his left just as the ball was pitched Gary know he got a little too much of the plate monster up the eight hits to Cincinnati and Chris Chambliss who doubled a drive-in once in the first and reached chuckles right there boy did they play him perfectly - out where we nolan looks so shot tonight making his seventh World Series start we look at Pedro Borbon and Jack Billingham Olin is going to in World Series competition I Carlos May well he's hit the ball hard twice except seoane Rodman over base hit any line to foster and left with the bases loaded Munson's a pretty good base runner but he wants to turn them loose logon Yankees pick up a run on two base hits and now at the end of five is the Reds three the Yankees to me there is the pictures for you Roger Maris we had a 61st home run October 1st Red Sox 1961 the pitcher was Tracy Stallard as we look at Dee MacPhail American League president on the left and hall-of-famer farmer matically President Joe Cronin on the right it's the red bull pen there are the spirit carriers go plumber bullpen catcher right his Joe Morgan he bounced the first but then he walked and started the Reds rally in the fourth Dola base one on a two-out single by Foster right too sad miss miss the ball and two strikes we're in the top of the six Reds three Yankees two ed figueroa can't you Dec 20 / a the brother Stanley just got a piece of it well here he is again what are you going to do another reason that makes Morgan so great Phil as he does not fear hitting with two strikes now they'll go to his grounds keeping Act he doesn't strike out much for a guy that drove him over a hundred hit 27 home run strikes out about 40 times a year he still feels he's got you in the Hall where they're two strikes yep last time he stole second Munson didn't even call the water definitely jump the first line is settled and about 2/3 nettles has to go to first met Morgan 9 out of 10 other plays you could get it say have demonstrated that beat speed four or five times today on defense and on officers another they remove the force out a possible DoublePlay the increase in has flied to left and foul a much one man out top of the six Reds three in the Yankees two Goodspeed pitch strike one and keep your eye on Morgan or the one melis keeping his eye on there is to draw on Jackson Jackson the left handle that was that is one eye on the hitter his other watching Joe Morgan we're gonna keep talking and they'll take off chili Figueroa blowing on his pitching in we got him on that off-speed pitch Joely Fudo a man Randolph will make the play two out Billy Martin coming out to the mound he might be going the first base all gasping who do you prefer to pitch to foster or bench what a choice but some choice to make how about going beyond them maybe Geronimo kid no forget that dude 25 grand Jackson what a job he's done for the angels Billy Martin what a series that was Tommy were you were in now aren't you and he had his 12 hits no no no before me well that's right the Google was playing shorten it the fact was still around but a memory at the prime organ at second bragging about your great mind time cluster is what and single it left field of driving around lowball one see what Billy Martin tiller figure two breaking pitches Winnetou the Reds lead here in the top of the sixth then he told them all breaking pitch organizer slide in boxing good for another foster you didn't think that was a strike jutsu I'm P Anderson never changes his expression been very fun walkie-talkie began right great a breaking pitch nothing across and now at the end of five and a half innings at Cincinnati 3 the Yankees to cookie lavagetto the Dodgers as we bring you Game four of 1947 Bill bevens lavagetto hits that ball off the right-field wall Eddie makes his scars Larry gets behind the plate let him almost dust in the plate off in 1947 it broke up the no-hitter and the Dodgers won the game a great moment 1947 game for about 1946 game for if you remember Alan it's on the board here in Yankee Stadium whitey Kurowski eNOS slaughter joe gergiolla yes that folks boy please frame that and keep it up there for a while you know getting back to that cookie lavagetto they're very few people knew bevens had a no-hitter because he had walked 11 men in that game he had like two infielders out there all the time nobody on base hey speaking to say hello she omekata my first manager in the big he was for the anchors he's like Wanda just outside of Buffalo nice moon nettles has hit to the box single men was picked off second Nikes trailed 3 to 2 in the bottom of the 6th how they have had the brakes tonight jail charge this over he had no chance all took that bad hop your rightful they've got to take advantage of a sooner or later he's graciously Kelly all right just to reminder what these places if there is a game five it will be six o'clock Eastern time tomorrow night six o'clock Eastern nettles at first with a base hit Yankee 7th and gamble and Morgan near the bag one hands it for the first out well I was wrong bill Bevans walk on the 10 men in that broad seemed like they were men on base every inning is Willie Randolph Willie came up in the Philip inning with runners at first and second nobody out trying to bunt miss the ball and that's when letters picked is why the center and struck out the Reds dugout strike one I mentioned before all the entities will Billy Martin will hit run alive of nettles at first and Randolph up in the ball game that holds back slice to write but curving foul back into the seats hoping Sparky Anderson really wants to sweep he said that bullpen doing most of the game any sign of trouble they're going to be in there when may be a factor now guys the flags especially those in left feel really blown out stiff it will knock them out Jetstream one out ball and two strikes anyway centerfield and Geronimo's there these can't find a hole or a to up Fred Stanley wait a minute I think Billy's calling him back Fred Stanley is ready to hit but Billy Martin is waving him back in Halle Hendrix cutting across the outfield Oh Joe he can reach the seats here he's primarily a pro header Elrod did a good job for the Yankees filling in behind Munson and Fran Healy he's had the experience playing with Baltimore in the World Series he's got to catch his breath he's been running a long way well God's been a bad one sin his share he's flied to left back on Tuesday night maybe the big surprise of this series so far for Cincinnati is the group on the club 9 or 10 minute the most to prove Phil and Jill next the pitching staff the win under today's ball game allowing just two runs in each of the first three games and they've been the line Larry Shepard the pitching coaches sits quietly back he doesn't say a word but he's built a pretty solid pitching staff there Sheppard they don't get as many starts as a lot of teams with 20 game winners that they're consistent all year long Yankees used to do that they always had at 15 and 2 guys the oven 108 12 slope at joke or the changeup madhumatl front strike but you're right especially away Anderson Yanks in so quickly makes you think that the starters aren't doing a good job nettles at first two out the Reds lead 3 to 2 in the bottom of the sixth he won't give a lot of false ball two beautiful changes on two Clark he has a method of getting the starting pitchers out as early as he does he feel that he prevents some sore arms late in the ballgame he brings the fresh guy in we're tired seven days a night they're more susceptible to bad pitches staff stays fresh the whole season Optima Tony Perla Hendriks flies out and now at the end of six full innings its Cincinnati three and the Yankees - what you see is the trophy that is presented to the winning team and should Cincinnati win this game they will be presented with that trophy by the commissioner and we have our cameras set up we'll be covering the celebration and should the Yankees win we'll be right back here 6 o'clock Eastern time tomorrow night all kinds of ifs Jim Mason is a new shortstop if there's a game Saturday you've got baseball football doubleheader no tennis Sunday baseball football here is Johnny Bench seven for 13 a two-run homer in the fourth Randolph is going out Gamble is coming in gamble slips staggers makes the he looked like he didn't have all his tickets for the dance floor that time he really stumbled watch there's less off spots with that all night rain or all-day rain yesterday the infield practice some was it by a hip of the outfit that just stuck in the mud what Geronimo is about a Geronimo singled and stole a base in the third inning bounced out short to first in the fourth 3 for 11 in the series Cincinnati 3 we got to win top of the seventh inning a 3 2 run homer by Johnny Bench two big blow Munson's been the big hitter for the Yankees he is 3 for 3 strike Figueroa three runs five hits two errors that's a live score Cincinnati - 704 the ages Figueroa has done a good job nothing's up Dave concepciĆ³n he walked in a third inning bounced out third to first in the fifth three for 12 in this world series Dave concepciĆ³n Deegan behind the plate his first World Series two strikes rather than very few argue just at all on clothes in the basin that just reach down fart and it's a basic there's a case of a guy hitting a good pitch many times almost always Bugsy when a guy gets hit they say was a hanging curveball that was in a good spot watching Munson motioning he wanted the ball a little bit more probably thought val hai' gets truly at his tailgate so concepciĆ³n is on and it brings up P drawers and obviously a base stealing threat baby gets a good lead at first it can only be able to get a full step receptions one through on stolen bases in the series 21 431 during the regular season before God he stole maybe two strides shorter but he's getting back standing up and he knows he can go a little bit farther he makes him die spike different players have different ways of measuring I remember Ken Boyer's we look at Petros used to always say he'd get a lead that if he fell he'd be a Bonnie's length and arm away step on the guy that's what Morgan conceptual than a dive one strike he Rose takes a good look at sugar he's just a little bit busier this time I'd have to take a look here's where I gamble a pitch out Phil all right see what happens what a beautiful shot as our helicopter and our cameraman have been getting great shots all night you're looking at Times Square New Year's Eve music the Guy Lombardo and here it is tonight as we go to the bottom of the seventh game four it'll be rivers white and Munson for the New York Yankees Cincinnati 3 New York to fill with roles playing river so close the entire series he may take the fun away from down to better because he ever drag in the direction of the second baseman in the a I don't understand that the first baseman to feel the ball big to fit through the nope I haven't seen him do it once all year you got to wonder that I know he's doing some funny lessons for you it's great training Mickey rivers poplin shortstop in the first flied the left and the third single stole a base and scored in the fifth row strike one strike will Mickey rivers than busy ball one strike Gary Nolan has gone all the ways allowed the Yankees two runs seven hits Vigoroth three runs six hits behind the plate comes Johnny bench's reaches into the stands almost makes the play he really hit that hard play he had he knew exactly where that wall was now watch once he get there really reach in there he's into the second row with that glove it's almost like a first baseman's mitt one ball two strikes we're the umpire pursuing to pay the mixi if there was going to be fat interference or see to be prodded clearly hustle by vegan what a try by bench I had a great kitchen it guys here on ball two strikes left centerfield Geronimo going over sighs Foster Foster likes to play rivers is out bullpen keeps going for Cincinnati Oh a ham number 43 mcenany now the left-hander as we placed Pedro Borbon Sparky knows the value of a short left-handed release medalist Park Roy white bounced second the first in the first inning flied to right the third floor all Cincinnati 3 New York to bottom of the seventh one out nobody on all to Berman monks in the on deck batter he is 3 for 3 his score Devon he is driven in the run mm Elston Howard makes the play two balls two strikes one out Cincinnati 3 New York to bottom of the seventh shallow centerfield Geronimo coming or makes the play 12 and here is Thurman Munson chicken Munson singled and scored in the first inning Gordon first on the double by Chambliss singled in the third inning and drove in a run in the fifth he single to center field drive in Mickey rivers two catchers have had a bunch of hits between him months has got eight that's got7 Munson has five consecutive hits the series record is six goose Gosselin but at 19 20 for the Washington Senators against Pittsburgh fitted over three gay big time the fat returning Oh file two quick strikes so first time he's tried to pull the ball nobody on base yep no and now smoothly Phil he's getting that changeup for baking but a little bit more inside part of the plate if you're wondering why the pitchers are walking around a lot they're blown in their hands and I don't know who and start at the world but you can't do on the mound you must do it off the mound I guess good housekeeping good back I could never understand that word yogi berra Billy Martin gene Monahan the trainer Sparky Anderson run Cincinnati three-to-two bottom of the seventh with two captures are leading in hits Munson has eight bench has seven outside ball one one ball two strikes he's got to be considered one of the best hitters in the American League with two strikes on him Thurman Munson but that ability to fight fight em off hit him foul foul him back and then they get one over the plate he can drill it to right-field as he has so often in this series see where Gary Nolan is that's okay does that mom it's a ball the base here he's got his fourth base hit of the night he times 120 other guys I guess before hits in the game Munson continues his tremendous hitting at six in a row right Sparky's going to go to the left-hander with Chambliss nettles and Gamble coming up he's card giving the column mcenany he goes with the percentages he does he's a guy that Makani has a bit of forgotten man this year he's pitched poorly he gave a good relief job earlier he's coming in again are you seen Mac a Manny four hits in the game 35 times has begun Munson does it tonight and there's a break in the action here at New York with the score Cincinnati 3 New York 2 the house that Ruth Built and with Munson tying a record when you talk about records at Yankee Stadium you must talk about the Bambino there he is a home run a familiar scene mazovick will be at the plate boy he knows what to do when he hits a home run there is Lou Gehrig the greedy how many times that happened will McEnaney in relief of Nolan so no national league pitcher has been able to pitch a World Series complete game since blasted the Pirates in that final game in 71 against the Orioles 20 30 games in the row with no complete game Munson who ties goose Gosselin with six consecutive hits he joins 35 others and having four hits in a World Series game there you see him that list includes rape names Joe Garagiola but some of the good players like Freddy Lynn finesse Karim ela Joe Medwick new Freiberg gripper Collins bill Dickey Stan hack Charlie Keller Wally Moses eNOS slaughter Kurowski Monte Irvin Vic words Gillian mantle wills Brock Robinson Jackson Staub only two guys in der were you two guys we were defense defense but Munson first to Lana and Chris Chambliss is the battery that's we to Cincinnati leading bottom of the seventh swing bouncy ball a Morgan that nzn in one pitch McEnaney gets the job done at the end of seven Cincinnati 3 New York 2 Varon is from our helicopter live Yankee Stadium and this is the 76th World Series game played at Yankee Stadium it started in 1923 top of the 8th bright lights of New York Cincinnati leading 3 to 2 qinger Ross picks well he'd like to get that one pitch back that he threw in the 4th inning to bench the two-run home run got a little inside here you tell the statistics out further off ship Cincinnati went of course it's all over should the Yankees pull it out we'll be back here tomorrow night at 6 o'clock Eastern Time Pete Rose he's run for great double three for 14 in the World Series left centerfield Mickey rivers taking charge makes the play and this one away nose flies to rivers brings up Griffey Griffey is all for 3 1 for 15 in the series top the 8th Cincinnati 3 New York 2 strike Figueroa has gone all away for New York he's allowed six hits one a whole mama two-run homer by Johnny Bench and a fourth Wow good play by Graig Nettles let's know the whole field Sparky Lyle you wonder with River speed they don't tailor those lines in a little bit wait all that much as you mentioned Tony even down third they see Sparky Lyle in the bullpen if there is a game tomorrow and be at six o'clock as goals mentioned many time I only Billy Martin is named to starter some say Holtzman some say hunter and have to wait and see I guess time to strike pitch Muncie is going to make the play heat up Griffey is out Munson Chambliss further like bags pops off the I know play very quickly the one that cooked that time Griffey thought it might go foul he hesitated he got to the best of the business guy no plate today guys up there as well says so there are two away and here is Joe Morgan bounced out of the first walk stole a base and scored and then single five for 14 in the World Series basket ball misses two balls in the strike from the 8th Cincinnati may be included two and Figueroa no one started for Cincinnati McEnaney has come on deep to right-center fail rivers running a broom makes the play so it's one two three four cincinnati 88 we go to the bottom of the 8th Cincinnati 3 New York 2 Yankee Stadium from above Cincinnati lady in three two - bottom of the eighth and Billy Martin is gone to his bench Lou Piniella who is pre frayed in this series will pinch-hit for Carlos May will McEnaney come on shambo's to end the 70 Greg nettles the on-deck batter I've left bail Foster is there well he makes that up feel really look easy because every time the Yankees hit the ball on the nose somebody catches it here is metals metals bounced out and the second and in similar right before had a base hit in the sixth 3 4 12 it's a royal one and one Cincinnati 3 we watch tuna part of the two balls in the strike nobody on one man out the base on balls I guess delivered the pitch conceptional and moved behind the baguette over shifted recommend they watched Eric meadows and it brings up Oscar gamble Raleigh Eastwick has begun to throw now for Cincinnati gamble popped to third baseman in the second inning safe on air on the 4th and poppin 2nd baseman was 6 pa bill George Foster going back he's there two hours it's a perfect outfield for Cincinnati's speed any of those long flyballs or line drive with the speed they have they could just outrun a run all day long limit throughout the whole series their pitchers have been able to take advantage of the park keeping the ball away tough situations make them hit the deep part of the park when you go into a park as you well know guys you always say which is the outfield where I can get the most outs and here it's right-center the left-center Randolph strike one the play I'm a certain way and your pictures have to pitch them so they hit that way Cincinnati pickiness been able to do that bouncing ball of concepciĆ³n he's got it too Morgan the forces on that ngne so at the end of eight complete innings Cincinnati 3 New York 2 the preceding message was furnished to buy Major League Baseball it will be Perez Driessen and foster in the top of the ninth against Figueroa who has gone all away Cincinnati three runs six hits and two errors the Yankees two runs eight hits and no errors looking ahead bottom of the ninth for New York's it will be Mason or a pinch-hitter rivers and white Perez bounced out Chambliss unassisted in the second inning line to center field in the fourth bounced out third the first in the sixth five for 16 in the World Series affectionately called God dog Billy Martin down to three outs spa championship one ball one strike nobody on nobody out top of the ninth leading by a run hot smash Baba Tony Kubek is headed for the Cincinnati Clubhouse should they win we will as always been doing it for 30 years now will cover the winning Clubhouse one ball and two strikes twenty Perez that's the first time as we look at Morgan Downey bench Sparky Anderson first time to Figaro I believe Munson off Phil very seldom shake Munson off two balls in two strikes top of the ninth Cincinnati leading 3 to 2 Oh about as you can see three balls two strikes to close to take or two strikes take a pitch like that you usually just fooled mm-hmm Billy Martin chicken n see Jean Michaels on the headset booty tebbit's Paul Kia fight walkie talkies the ball is fouled off lot of Cincinnati players are CB fans I think good johnny is Sidewinder Johnny Bench Mike Lum is Hawaiian Punch that's the stick jean-michel how you see Michael oh I wish brother Crawford would say he'll open ball four Perez draws the base on balls that's a fourth walk given up by Figueroa it brings up Driessen who flied the left and his second inning ball to the catcher and the fourth Papa the second baseman in the sixth over three designated hitters everybody tells his story Cincinnati 357 the yank oh seven or his party said he doesn't like the designated hitter and after having used him he thinks less of it Yankee designated hitters haven't even hit the area code No did well during the season go atmosphere right one ball one strike nobody out Perez is at first base 3 2 Cincinnati leading top of the ninth its Mason or a pinch-hitter rivers and white for the Yankees in the bottom half of the ninth two balls in this form Munson won't throw the ball back in the Royal has to motion for it he's John with grilled Egon they're going at it pretty good foul out of play two balls and two strikes usually you're pretty good if you keep your head out towards centerfield Munson right now shaking his head he's letting Deegan have a little bit long as you don't show the umpire up we put a good shake - to pitch gets away from Munson it has for the dugout misses it and Perez stops at second it's a wild pitch charged to Figueroa here's the pitch like a breaking ball Thurman tried to backhand it couldn't find it for a minute time you throw the curve that breaks away it bounces the other way Joe doesn't it sure does it's a play you just have to practice in spring training blowing I hate it Levi is calling time boost feminists calling time not first base they got some jarred going on Billy Martin funny ninth inning and now Froemming is going afterward Martin little patience something a lot of the Yankee ball players have said Joe they not not taken anything away from the American League umpires but make it look like they'd given the Yankees any breaks and so a lot of the close calls have gone against the Yankees Billy Martin rejected Earl Weaver was thrown out by shad Crawford in 1969 now Billy Martin has just been launched she's kind of a I have to say a unique tie and nothing was really happening it was a wild pitch Perez went the second wire third base wanted to shut out then roaming press the button Billa was gone I'll tell there is fremming gone now here comes Billy you throw me out you're going to hear my whole speech you could read lips you know what Fleming said that was way too I think Billy was still arguing over that pitch that he can pull the ball on Perez three balls two strikes nobody out Perez is at second Cincinnati's leading tweeted to win the top of the ninth Driessen draws the walk and here comes yogi from this crowd I don't think there's anybody that doesn't love yoga Bigelow get up there the Yankee fans really congratulating Figueroa did a tremendous job the line score on him three one six hits and two errors is a break in the action as we wait for the new Yankee pitcher here in New York with the score Cincinnati 3 New York 2 Yogi Berra the acting manager as we wait for tip roaded come on Cincinnati leading 3 to 2 base runners at first and second with top of the ninth nobody out should this game admin Cincinnati become the champions still a big weekend of sports on NBC next Saturday the Rich's women's tennis tournament ever the $200,000 Colgate inaugural players left as a quarter-century of his shows Jack Benny George Burns that's October 29 8:00 to 10:00 on NBC as Munson talks to Tidrow with Perez at second base not much strategy to go by with nobody out first and second Cincinnati leading by a run 3-2 to win in life plus the bunt in this situation he'll Norway once I think Sparky and I were both be really surprised straightaway centerfield Perez is tagging up and so is the baserunner chrĆ©tien at 1st rivers makes the play Perez is heading for fave the throw is not in time so they get foster but they pick up a base one out Driessen remains it first Johnny bench's the hitter bench prompted the second baseman in the third in a two run homer in the fourth and flying to right and seventh dick Tidrow second series game he pitched two scoreless innings in made many plays like this Joe during the year he's got a way of timing his leap but it did not hit his glove he saw it hit the fan there and then come back on the field he quickly chased the ball here's another angle from our centerfield camera look at him find the wall get above the fence see the ball hit the fan but Lou DiMuro the umpire left field ruled homerun immediately get accustomed win here boy that's blowing a lot of the fans right out of the ballpark along with Johnny bench's three-run homer Johnny Bench Geronimo fouls it off two home runs by bench in this game ties a record from National League Player there you see him 8 for 15 he's had in this series a lot of play both catchers have hit well Johnny Bench really productive he is driven in five of the six runs foster drove in the other one for Cincinnati how to play count remains one ball two strikes one out three runs are in Johnny Bench jumped on the first pitch a line shot worldwide really gave it a chase out of play one ball two strikes one out nobody on three runs in Cincinnati a six we are to top of the ninth hot smash base hit extra bases for Geronimo it's a two base hit man came up with the ball so it's a ground rule double Geronimo is on at second here's Dave concepciĆ³n concepciĆ³n walked in the third bounced out third to first in the fifth single asunder in the seventh like side winding Tidrow has backed him up a bit one strike man that concepciĆ³n had stepped on by Randolph bothering in the left hand got in right at the fingernail it's extra bases Geronimo will come to scar as the fan grabs that ball and Geronimo has himself with double it's his 72 ballgame and here comes yogi once again so the Cincinnati Reds really put it on ice here in the top of the ninth Johnny Bench a three-run homer concepciĆ³n is just driven in another run and it's 7 to 2 tip bro has been replaced the Yankees jumped out in front in their bottom half of the first one after two were out Sparky Lyle looks like he's going to be the new pitcher munchies singled and that was to be the first of four hits Munson singled and Chambliss suppler left-center field then the Reds came back with three in the fourth a walk to Morgan he stole second Perez lined out Driessen fouled out and then frosted with two out single or left to drive in Morgan to tie it up and Johnny Bench hit a two-run homer that made it a 3 to 1 ballgame benches just hit a big home run here in the ninth inning they've scored four we've got a break in the action here we're in the top of the 9th 72 Cincinnati so before the game they were asking different people I'm sure they asked you see we're asking everybody to describe this Cincinnati ballclub what is it about them that makes them win and I use two expressions that I'd heard weren't mine mr. Rickey used to always talk about errors of enthusiasm and that's what these guys have they make mistakes before they and make you pay for it and if you see a stick and Pete Rieser had a great line he said to be great you have have inner conceit or they've got that absolutely they know they can do the job Sparky Lyle certainly our thanks to National League Blake Cullen the public relations director Nick Wagner vice president of Cincinnati Jim Ferguson publicity director Roger rule promotion director of the Yankees cedric tallis and vice president and marty appel publicity and bay liners promotion director all the help they've given us Bob Fisher of the American League as Pete Rose folks is strike right two two strikes one out that's concepciĆ³n at second base 72 Cincinnati lady right at Randolph he's got it flips the Chambliss roses out concepciĆ³n moves the third thanks to Commissioner Boyd Kuhn Johnny Johnson Joe Riker Bob Weir director of information they've Meister director of radio and TV many people involved in a world series right now it's Cincinnati and the Yankees bouncing ball Griffey out Chambliss on his sister that ends the ninth inning we've got the bottom of the ninth Cincinnati 7 New York 2 bottom of the ninth inning cincinnati out in front by the score of 7 to 2 Otto Velez come out of the Yankee dugout he'll be the pinch hitter against will McEnaney Velez is batting for Mason Johnny Bench tremendous night to run homer in the fourth a three-run home run and ninth there he is a franchise over left out of play strike one one ball one strike Gary Nolan started McEnaney came on in the seventh-inning all back one ball two strikes Cincinnati 7 New York to bottom of the ninth game for well as is out on strikes of curveball McEnaney gets his first strikeout Wilde and it brings up Mickey rivers still trying to hit it past rose needless to say Rose is right on his doorstep as we look at the Cincinnati dugout her poised ready for the victory celebration one strike the count two youngsters fighting for that foul ball down there that's why time is being taught oh they got him back on stage right to Pete Rose he got him the one Billy hit hard and Petros was there Mickey rose Mickey rivers finally lines when it rose and what do you think them caught right there two outs and the Yankees are down to their last out Roy white if Roy white should get on it will give months and a chance to be the first player ever to get five hits in the game he's already gotten four two balls no strikes two out 70 to bottom this could be it left field George Foster Geronimo foster makes to catch that's it the Cincinnati Reds win the World Series in four straight it was a sweep the final score Cincinnati seven the New York Yankees to the Cincinnati Reds win their fourth World Championship they won in 1919 1940 1975 and 1976 becoming the first National League team to win in consecutive years since the New York Giants did it 1921 and 1922 in the red seven-game sweep in postseason play and the first team to do that now they are led by Pete Rose Pat Zachry it's a first for two nothing series since 1966 when Baltimore did it over Los Angeles Bob Bailey Cincinnati Reds have just won it there goes to Commissioner the winner is Nolan it's his first series victory seven starts Neimark League edge is now 43 to 30 in World Series play as the Cincinnati Reds defeat the New York Yankees 72 Phil what do you think well I'm very disappointed yeah I know I was rooting for the Yankees but it was unbelievable what this club did they made a couple of mistakes tonight but like you said they make a mistake but they got a spring on it they take it back it's a tough ball to out this Big Red Machine and now you see Johnny Bench who was for the most valuable player in this World Series been she was two-time National League Most Valuable where was the most valuable player in this series and certainly deservedly so with a tip of the hat to Thurman Munson his counterpart on the Yankee Munson had himself four big base hits but bench had to play home runs a two-run homer and a fourth in the other big blast ninth which really nailed it for these Cincinnati Reds there is the clubhouse Bob Bailey Alcala there is Nolan Pat Zachry Petros Larry star the trainer McEnaney right yeah middle and shortly of course the champagne Tony Kubek is there and let's go to Tony in the clubhouse hi John fill with me Little Joe Morgan you had a few bad hop but congratulations second consecutive World Championship it's always more difficult to repeat Joe right the second time rounds always the toughest I tell you what I'm very pleased I'm very happy for all the guys because there are great bunch of ballplayers and they put it all with the other air after toward the end of the season went right through the playoffs and right on into the World Series near their brain it's just great to be on a team like this Johnny you can honestly be said your pitching staff has been maligned but they gave up just 800 runs in four ball games they said that was your weakness I've never believed it's a weakness I know you have it either right I've said all along ever since I've been hurt at the pitching staff is underrated here because we don't have a big 20 game winner because Sparky uses the whole staff all the time and that keeps guys from winning 20 games but they do the job that we asked of them hold them close and we'll get them some runs and that's what we've been doing all year and then we worked out that well in the playoff in the World Series Joe the big question has been asked most of this week during the off days rain yesterday is this ballclub really as good as the all-time great teams I really believe it is I think you could play in any other and compete with any team in the history of baseball I don't see how you can have a much better team you may can but I don't see how because we have hitting I mean average hitting we have a power hitters we have base running speed we have space stealers we have a good defense and we have a very good pitching staff as you just mentioned and I don't see I can have much better than that because we put it all together and use it all and we plus on top of that we're very aggressive I can do one more thing Wes stock said you're supposed to call about something out in the west coast he's a new pitching coach insell you give him a call you want you to do a clinic for him okay thank you no all right right now the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn Sparky Anderson congratulations the president of the club Bob Howsam the chairman of the ballclub mr. Louis Nippert congratulations to y'all and mr. commissioner Ivan let you do the honors all right Tony I'm very proud on behalf of professional baseball to present to Gus and to Bob and the Sparky and to this great championship team of Reds the first team to win two consecutive World Championship National League since 1921-22 a truly great team beautiful very emblematic of this team and what you've achieved congratulations to you all behalf everybody invest applause speak there you go all right let me get over here this is the chairman of the board of the Cincinnati Reds mr. Louis Nippert congratulations sir thank you well it's a great satisfaction to see say the least and we're very happy for for the team to put up the show they did and then the team here and in New York was gave us a good go of it mr. Tippett I see your wife give you a little pack you've got all lipstick over your face congratulation Bob Howsam the president of the ballclub well Tony this was one I wanted more than anything because I think that you may only see the last balanced teams of baseball and I wanted it so bad because this is a great club and they worked so hard and Sparky and his coaches did such a great job Bobby you did in such style you prove that your pitching staff that you helped put together with some trades and bring them through the farm system it's been malign but it's been a good pitching staff it showed in this series they did a fine job I think everybody did a great job for us all 25 they helped us win and it takes 25 Tony as you know when you played it's more difficult to repeat Commissioner Sparky Anderson I want to get a word from Sparky congratulations park Tony thank you but the proudest I think I am of this club is they showed that you can have class and pride and still be world champions you don't have to be Mad Men and in the different time this club here is the greatest club that's come down the pike for one reason they got more class than any other baseball team has ever had there's one guy shows the way that's you Sparky thank you so much Commissioner any final words Johnny Bench with two big home runs baseball commissioner all right thank you sir Johnny what a way to have a World Series after somewhat of a disappointing year fantastic to hold out a year what a way to make a year that I've made it Tony I you know mom and dad out there and I know they're excited a time I I think in all my years is probably the biggest thrill of had my job we're going to have you take a look and tell us about the home run that you hit the second home run well I thought he was going to throw me a fastball running in on me where the play and it look like was a slider I really stayed with it I wanted hit the ball in the air somewhere and try to get that run in because I really didn't feel safe of a one-run lead at that point Johnny rivers didn't get on base to try and challenge your honor every time somebody did you gunned them out the Yankee ballclub struggle along but your pitching staff to me is the thing that was so important I know to you guys in this ballclub well I didn't get the credit I knew they could do the job I really wanted to play them down as much as I could because sometimes when you don't give a guy enough credit you really don't look for that much and these guys Gary Nolan you know what a story and Gullett going you know it's just you can go down the line Tony but this is just one great effort I've never really enjoyed anything as much as I have the night John I don't know if you've heard this or not I producer Roy Hammond just gave me the word you were named Most Valuable Player of the 1976 World Series congratulations thank you very much what a what a thrill I it makes up it makes up for it everybody and I'm just so excited because this ballclub deserved it John congratulations okay you're gone let's come on at Pete Peter hey congratulations you repeated you proved you can play with anybody and maybe any team in the history of baseball it's a great ballclub a great bunch of guys got to give credit the bench nice one the bet the whole series and hit two home runs a night but I think I get a little extra credit to our pitchers who give up eight runs in the four games and everybody knocked our pitching staff coming in in this series and they had a two pointer and run errors for the four game so it was a strictly a team effort and we're very happy you've been noted as an offensive ballplayer you've never gotten the credit that you should for playing defense whether in you're at second base left-field now third-base but you took the back psychologically right out of the hands of Mickey rivers I try to perform but I didn't think he could hit the ball if he's never shown me you could hit the ball you even Washington batting practice you hit the ball hard to left field down the line and the last time up he hit a rope right to me but you know I hate him thinking anyway about the button you can't give some you know you can't give Mickey rivers a bunt base hit because he gets on into steal second steals third and and that was our psychology behind it Sparky told me just shake hands what if I had to to be in there but it's great to win Tony you was on several winners and it's tough to win two in a row and we are and we're just very happy better club last year this is the best club in 14 years I've been associated with some at Cincinnati and I think it was strictly a team effort this year Michael um helped his Bob Bailey Driessen our bench has been great armbrister Plummer Flynn to hold the whole crew they just did a whole great job congratulations thank you let's go back upstairs quickly okay Tony Phil I know we were watching that the two of us and we had to comment that it was kind of different than most celebrations Johnny Bench with the quiet pride that he had almost choked up with emotion because it's been a tough thing for Johnny Bench with the injuries this was a genuine big thrill for him Bob Howsam almost with sadness in his voice said something that you just wonder if was something in the future that he was thinking about he said this may be the last balanced team is he thinking about the free agents that may be on the market you just wonder about that but at any rate the Cincinnati Rams a good tough ballclub they swept the Yankees and I guess the statistics really prove it Reds hit for 313 the Yankees for 220 220 two runs eight for the Yankees Phil your ballclub was a good ballclub Joe they don't have to hang their head in shame I think they had a great year I think they got a taste of it now and I think next year they'll come out want to get back in and hopefully face the Cincinnati Reds again they did not play the tight ball tonight they got a lot of breaks more than they got in the first three games but just weren't able to take advantage of it you got to give credit to Cincinnati concepciĆ³n with a great play to break up a rally you can just about go right down the line I think that Joe Morgan said it best they've got aggressive baserunning they've got good feeling it makes no difference where you go and with the designated hitter at least with a pitcher in there you can walk eight guys to get to the guy you want to but this is a good tough ball club there are all kinds of statistics I got all kinds of notes foster case you want records he had ain't put out that's a new series record which is the least thing it's about as exciting I guess it's kissing your sister did you get the record like that when you won four and the Reds went through that series Phil using only nine starters my comment of pictures that tells you something yes it does well the Yankees they were swept by the Cincinnati Reds the Cincinnati Reds back to back Phil it was good to work with you I'll tell you that we great again and of course it was great to work with Tony Kubek we've had some great shots in this series are a lot of people who have to work very very hard to put those shots together we're going to show you some of these shots and we're going to give you a list of the credits the people who we do make all this
