this is it no more after this one for one of these teams curveball on the air at Mickey bat at 3:26 with wall home runs in 69 runs batted in he and Freddie pot tack had the most hits in his playoff series so far inside and I a fastball one and to Mickey rivers leading off of the Yankees top of the first ball game just underway from royal Stadium [Applause] rivers goes out and he strikes out there's one away and that'll bring on Willie Randolph Randolph with rivers in the lineup that's a little more in the batting order normally a rate but only harden shaking up his lineup has Randolph batting sec he's 4 for 15 in the series with the run batted in curve misses outside on the air will he batted it 274 with 4 home runs and 40 runs batted in got the inside corner 1 1 Paul splittorff pitching with three days rest Ron Guidry will be going off with two days rest sliced foul and how to play a ball and two strikes on Willie Randolph of course both managers bill probably told their starting but you should go out there and throw as hard as you can for as long as you can and I'll go get you that's right the Yankees always have Sparky Lyle and the Royals have a lot of guys in the bullpen low two and two on Randolph Sparky said despite the fact that he pitched quite a few innings yesterday that he's better with the least amount arrested he can come back today bounced to short pop tech to us you know of this crowd we'll go through this for nine innings there gonna be some horse people tomorrow and they're gonna sound like me here's Thurman Munson the Yankee catcher in Captain he's 5 for 16 in the series with a home run and four runs batted in two men out nobody on no score top of the first [Applause] what's the usual making the pitcher wait [Applause] filed up slow curve much we got in front of him filed it back what breeze there is here at royal stadium seems to be blowing slightly toward left yesterday it whipped out toward right one strike on much Thurmond batted 308 for the Yankees on the season on a ground pot deck deep he's got a long throw makes it in time put on six to three other side the Yankees nothing the Royals coming up on the ground shortstop Bucky Dennis there and there's one away pot Tech first ball hitting bounces out 63 by the way that little fella is having a good series he's 7 for 13 he's driven in five runs here's how Mac grade a left fielder black/gray 5 for 14 in the series runs batted in you got that in the opener at Yankee Stadium called strike on McCray al thought it was hi by the way the home plate umpire is Nick preeminent once again working the ball game six umpires and will give them to you as we go along and the dirt it's one on one on my prey Nick brimming in his umpiring behind the plate bill Deegan at first Jerry new decorate second and Marty Springs dead at third two and one on McRae I'm firing a left field on the left field line Russ gets and down the right-field line Jim McKeen fouled back Guidry reaching back with a good fastball it's 2 & 2 Phil mentioned Guidry pitched a three-hitter McRae was old for two in that second game played at Yankee Stadium still 2 and 2 on McRae pray pot that got one of those base hits George Brett the third baseman got one and Frank white the second baseman got one Yankees won that ballgame 6-2 to firaon Guidry [Applause] just missed outside the counters ball three and two on how I'm afraid [Applause] denne Leonard to beat the Yankees in the third game six to two that's out of play and of course the Yankees won yesterday six to four over Kansas City Sparky Lyle picking up the win pitching 5 and 1/3 innings of great relief baseball giving up just two hits how to play again still three and two on al McRae with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the first no score [Applause] now to play again McRae swinging late on the fastball away fouling him off on the right side get another full house here place will hold just a bit over 40,000 the Royals go a bit over 41,000 each game but he did he'd better hurry safe McRae beats my chopper that bucky did not have a good grip on that ball he had to get the short hop as we watch it right there had a reach and couldn't get quite enough zip on it so MacRay is on at first then field hit there's one away and that'll bring on George Brett the third baseman Brett fire for 17 in the series with a run batted in good breaking ball Brett got a piece of it fouled it off I think the pitch that's made Guidry scooter probably the hard slider that he evidently picked up watching Sparky Lyle there's no doubt about that today Brett was looking to pull that first pitch [Music] hello it's a ball on the strike one out one on we look at Al McRae at first base he beat out an infield hit [Applause] on the ground it's a foul ball right on the line there at first base watch that ball all the way and waved it foul so it's a ball and two strikes on Brett you know Brett hit a triple like that the other day there is the first base umpire Bill Deegan but that's a tough play for a first baseman bill you should know that better than anybody you're holding a runner on and then you got to take that quick step to the right then they hit it to your left tough to get back it is tough to get back I think here we look at Paul Blair out in right field replacing Reggie Jackson here if you realize that he's going to pull the ball and try to pull it maybe you should bounce off so far yeah but the inclination is to get away from that bag as quickly as you can as far as you can so he can cover more ground low two balls two strikes on Brett [Applause] as Reggie yelling at the bench [Applause] that bars going to be over the end of rivers maybe Brent went in hard and both teams are out on the field Brent went in hard at nettles and nettles kicked him and that's when the fight started putting mark right in the middle trying to break it up but the Royals lead one to nothing [Applause] a triple into right-center field by George Brett I think Guidry scooter got in the middle of that knee decide he'd better come out of it that's for sure and they got pots heck out of there - as you can see Billy Martin with protect but today it kind of surprised me is brett came in hard and trying to knock the ball out of the nettles hands and then came up swinging when it's all over if nobody gets throwing out Brett will be a third base they'll be one out and the Royals will have a 1 to nothing lead my Guidry was right in the middle of that as you mentioned Belle he got out of there I think one of the Yankees got him out of there Phil because they don't that's the one guy they don't want to lose you don't want to lose your starting pitcher tell you Mickey misjudged that ball that's about the first ball that he's missed played in this whole series well when it was hit Phil I thought it would be over his head but you know you can't you could never say that was right now he put on a burst of speed and just couldn't get to the ball herzog now talking to Brett and evidently Brett and nettles will stay there's metal buttoning his shirt up now we're going to get another look at that play let's watch it closely now Blair comes over good backing up now here's where it is at third the nettles didn't do anything and oh there he did yep after after Brett win it to him nettles kick team and here it goes here and right in the middle of his head ring yep I'd say that was the wrong guy to fight with a man Hill is trying to hold him he can't do it Jen was over there to Hudson there's your zebra to background but the batter will be out cowards the Yankees left to bring their infield in [Applause] neither bret nor nettles thrown out of the ballgame and I think Nick Crimmins the Primack ins going out now and telling Guidry to throw as many as he wants to get loose [Applause] well they said both ball clubs were going to be aggressive tonight they sure shown it you're right well there's one away Kenny George Brett's over third base as out Gowens the right dealers are better now is his rape attempt in the series at all we met you already here guidry watch new ball [Applause] there's bread off there the whole strike on the outside corner that one's a struck got three times so far the series strike two on kau Inoa two his metals and and Brett over third base too much distance separates I think they've decided to play baseball instead of playing Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton or Earnie Shavers only plays the first base and make it a time as Brett scores so cow was a high top of the third he's out at first base with Brett scores on the play in the wild Cowan picks up his fourth runs batted in now there's the play right there and Collins did that in one other game and just no chance for nettles to get that runner at the plate actually Guidry could have been out of this inning without any runs being scored look at it again that high hopper they must mouthing Meadows odd telling there's no chance to get Brett go on and make the play at first base here is Amos Otis Motors has one base it in 13 times up it's like Brett got a shot in the left Amos has two runs batted in but it foul outside third Royals leading to nothing playing the bottom half the first inning in royal Stadium [Music] [Applause] once again [Applause] right actually two out and if you do that with 2 housefull you got to be thinking about stealing a base that's for sure but she's got the power to hit one out of here there it is beautiful bunny neck he's never figuring he tried twice in a row whoa too hot you don't figure a guy with the power of oldest leave and try to punt period right well if he does but you gotta figure he wants to steal second base here's john watham the first baseman playing in place of John Mayberry and Waffen takes high ball one Waffen and limited appearances for the royals bad at 3:28 on the air two home runs and 21 runs batted in Guidry holding otis close to first base that bunt by the way was the second base hit in this series rotas he's not 2 for 14 guidry fact the first base again [Applause] pop foul and how to play a ball to strike on Wathan no the reason you say scooter that a guy with the power of Amos Otis that he's going to bunt the ball with two outs it's a waste of time unless he wants to steal because the way you can sting the ball he could easily get the extra-base hit yeah 1 and 2 on Weiland I know managers that would chew a guy out if he did that one of his big hitters batting third fourth fifth or six I got chewed out for doing it I can see why especially with two-out leading off an inning all right and he's going got a good jump but whopping strikes out and the side is retired Royals pick up two runs on a three base hits at the end the Royals lead the Yankees to the nothing Lou Pinella is 5 for 16 in the series you're looking at Whitey Herzog now the manager of the Kansas City Royals they lead to nothing Pinellas 5 for 16 with two runs batted in it will be Piniella cliff Johnson and then Greg Nettles ball one [Applause] one and one but Allah wants new baseball or at least he wants Nick Remington the check that went on Remington had just walked it out to split door so what's all right [Applause] they sit for Piniella that might get past Otis though POTUS cuts it up and lose triumph or two and he'll make it with a double loop without really hustling scooter I don't think he's run that fast all year I said yeah Lou has been doing it all year long we know he's a great hitter and this is the best all year that I've seen him run he's gotten triples he's stolen bases taking an extra base that's his sixth base hit in the series in 17 times at bat so Piniella now down at second base nobody out and the batter is big cliff Johnson Johnson a designated hitter tonight he's 5 for 13 with a home run two runs batted in [Applause] now that base it by piniella quieted the crowd just a bit here huh I don't know if I'd want to go through a ball game making that much noise anyway Johnson backs off a fastball inside ball one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all strike got the inside corner Johnson doesn't believe it but it's one and one [Applause] well the Dodgers have already clinched the National League pennant you got to feel a little sorry for the Phillies and their fans mentioned that many people an all-time record for fans in any sporting event in the state of Pennsylvania and in miserable weather [Music] one and two on Johnson flips swinging over a curveball [Applause] he put out a talking to Frank white down at second base nobody up there is Lu [Applause] skyed into shallow right center Pinella will have to hold a second base is how Cowan sets up under the ball went away and about a novel the Yankees will be Greg Nettles Yankee skipper Billy Martin man see the way metals is greeted here tonight metal so far in the series 3 for 16 and he's driven in Iran Royals leading to nothing in the top of the second strike one I know [Applause] on the ground and white at second base there two outs and on the play Piniella goes to third base the batter knob of the Enki's will be their first baseman Chris Chambliss Cham was 1 for 13 in the series with the Yankee so he's due Chris Ciro of last year's American League Championship Series against the Kansas City Royals [Applause] outside ball one [Applause] one-on-one on Chambliss at sliced foul into the left field seats a ball and two strikes on shambles [Music] hi chopper to pot tag at shortstop nice hop for him and the side is retired one page hit and the Yankees leave a man at the end of one and a half the Royals to the Yankees nothing to nothing Royals bottom of the second - hi - Rojas ball one it'll be Rojas Darrell Porter the catcher and Frank white the second baseman against Ron Guidry 1 & 1 [Applause] just missed the outside corner two balls in a strike Munson didn't think it had missile you know Billy he didn't either no pinellas got a long run and makes a catch Lou Pinella I tell you I haven't seen Lou really play this hard Phil he is really out there hustling I said he wants to win so badly I said if all the anchors we watch it again put out a hundred percent like oh this was a tough chance sinking to just gets the glove on the turf and catches it oh there's one away an excellent play by Yankee left fielder Lou Piniella that'll bring on Darrell Porter the catcher border war for 14 in the series with two runs bat that 4 for 11 in the series he has not driven in a run and the curve ball is low [Applause] - hi two balls no strikes [Applause] two and one Royals got a one-out single infield hit by Hal McRae George Brett Joe veeneman with a triple into right centerfield and Brett scored on a high chopper to third base by Al Cowlitz and the Royals have a two nothing lead the bottom half of the second inning with one out and nobody on three and one get the feeling Guidry thinks he's being squeezed a little bit I think so it's that place a little smaller than it should be Randolph and Louie Claire backing up man we'll see what the official score says ball was hit hard again that artificial turf Willie would have played that ball on natural tear they give him a hit pill they said for Porter fourth base it for the Royals Porter on at first base one away and the batter is Frank white the second baseman [Applause] White's been up 14 times has four base hits and two runs batted in in the series [Applause] and white takes a strike [Applause] [Applause] and the left-field Piniella going back backpedaling makes a catch and they're two outs that Lou looks great out there this whole series you know the rap on Panola when he was not a good fielder but he's showing us something with the leather so far here's Freddy PopTech the leadoff man he's been up once bounce to Yankee shortstop Bucky Dent two outs [Applause] on the outside corner strike one on Patek [Applause] strike two on partek get to be going with that hard fastball quarterback to first base normally he is not a threat to steal [Applause] popped up behind the plate butsome coming back throws a mask away and the side is retired pot tech fouls to Munson for the third odd no runs one base hit one man left we played two and the Royals lead the Yankees two to nothing [Applause] foul into the seats left side [Applause] [Applause] credit third-base had a short hop made the play and welcome came back down on the bag well Brett's throw is high wampum normally catcher look at that came right back down on the back where he looked for a to bill that was good reflexes hat oh there's one away that'll bring on Bucky Dent the Yankee shortstop 2 for 11 in the series with two runs batted in that takes a curve low ball one [Applause] or what it was [Music] change curveball strike to one ball and two strikes on Bucky Dent Bucky picked up by the Yankees just before the season started Yankees sending Oscar gamble to the Chicago White Sox foul tip still one and two yeah well had an excellent year for the White Sox and Bucky Dent did what was expected of him for the Yankee so it's a good trade for both sides Bucky played good shortstop bad at night drove in close to 50 runs and bad close to 250 2 & 2 boy he put that right where porta wanted it you normally throw that ball right to where the mitt is a fire we'll call it a strike yeah [Music] and the right field in college is there to us I don't bring on Mickey rivers as we watch then go back to the Yankee dugout Mickey's been up once in the ball game a nice truck got swung at a wide breaking curveball like he had a good day yesterday got four base hits and five times up sliders outside ball one rivers now seven base hits nineteen times at bat right up the middle through they said boy he waited on that beautifully that's his eighth basin of the series it's got to be the most of anybody in this series one more than Freddie Patek rivers on at first two outs and the batter's Willie Randolph Randolph 4 for 16 with a run batted in Roy was leading to nothing in the top hat the third inning [Applause] curve is low ball one [Applause] foul outside third Dick Howser the third-base coach plays it and he will give it back to split torque fan rivers will go back to first base they're talking about all the bases that that might be stolen in a series well the Royals have stolen three and they've been caught twice and the Yankees have attempted just one stolen base that by Reggie Jackson and he was successful there goes rivers and he picked a good pitch a changeup but he'll be in there safe and almost came off the bag but he stayed there so that's the Yankees second stolen base of the series they have not been caught yet there it is again as bill said he got a great jump and it was a change of pace I thought he was gonna slide by the bag he goes in so hard and he hits the bag and then comes up another look at it he's really flying well he couldn't have got have gotten a better pitch to steal on how splittorf and Porter at that time Porter called for the change of identity the change was hide it took a long time getting there it's two balls and a strike on will here and off the Yankees have a runner in scoring position with two outs in the third inning and the Royals lead to nothing [Applause] the curve is a called strike two and two now they seem to go to the breaking ball with Randolph with men on base left handers breaking that breaking ball down and in right handers down and away [Applause] or Swilley as years go along he will all these things will be placed in the back was at some place and he'll remember how they pitched him in different situations another breaking ball misses outside three and two split door trying to stay away from the fastball might have to come in with it here with the count three balls and two strikes and thir much Sun on deck and he's some kind of clutch hitter [Applause] - hi both Lord Randolph walked bringing on Monson well the Yankees have excellent speed on the bases and remember a ball hitting the gap here really gets past the outfielders they've got Randolph at first base and rivers down at second two hours for Thurman Munson who's been up when she bounced to short Munson five for 17 in this series with a home running four runs batted in Thurmond as this is as is his custom wants a baseball inspected or this is a kind of situation that much sand really thrives on huh [Applause] missed outside ball one Porter's a snatcher you know he tries to pull that ball over every corner he does a good job he's very quick pitch was away Porter will not snatch it and try to pull it on the inside corner to get a strike ball but Nik Remington was not fooled [Applause] right Phil that's a basehead rivers better hurry talents with a strong throw it's high though it off the line and the Yankees get on the board it's now Royals 2 and the Yankees 1 yeah just as Bill White mentioned Thurman Munson I tell you you'd rather see him up there in a clutch situation than just about anybody else on the Yankees I would rather see him up there like that Phil than anybody in baseball okay I'm kind of clutch hitter that's where yogi is to be certain guys you need for that situation other guys tighten up and tense up yep those guys thrive on it well Galen Cisco is coming out of the Royal bullpen off the first base side as the Royals not get some action looks like Doug Byrd out there throwing a right-hander Doug Byrd throwing and Cisco not wanting to give splittorf some instructions and also give bird a little more time to get loose there's duck Burt again we talked about him being out there throwing there's Doug bird sisqó leaves bird by the way pista ninth inning yesterday pitched in the ninth inning yesterday for the Kansas City Royals he faced three men gave up a sacrifice fly a single and he got Piniella the fouled out here's Lou Piniella doubled his first time up foul back no the reason I say that about munching scooter he uses a hold field if you pitch him inside he can pull the ball hit pitch him away he'll go to the other way right it's hard to throw him the curveball because he waits so long and he doesn't strike out that often pretty good combination he all it adds up to a good hitter hey there target inside for penelon splittorf missed it's 1 & 1 Yankees trying to put some pressure on the Kansas City Royals who lead it to 2-1 and the third inning two outs and two on for the Yankees [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sliced foul and out of play a ball and two strikes on Lou Piniella Maranda going back to second base on a first basis Thurman Munson [Applause] 1 & 2 the count with 2 hours [Applause] - hi two balls two strikes one thing the Yankees are doing here Phil that might pay off later on they're making split Thor first of all throw a lot of pitches and they're making him bear down that's we look at Whitey Herzog as we mentioned earlier he normally does not finish games oh this wears him down a little bit more curve chopped the bread at third he will go to first base and makes the play on the side is retired Piniella bouncing out 5-3 Yankees pick up a run on two base hits they leave two and at the end of two and a half Royals - Yankees what [Applause] and in the left-field corner panel will not be able to get to this one he'll play it off the wall and McCrae will hold up at second base with a stand-up double so my grade doubling leading off the bottom of the third scooter it's a guy led the American League in doubles we look at it again he's amazing first time up he was trying to hit everything to right field here the pitch inside booms hit one hop Piniella holds it to a double and there's McRae off second the batter pour the egg before the Royal is his George Brett the third-base blue triple in a run and scored in the first inning and also started to brawl at third base and he takes low ball one nobody ought McCrea down at second base [Applause] one in one little action in the Yankee bullpen Guidry seems to be throwing a ball hard although sometimes cooter uh it's deceptive the ball is moving there's Mike Torrez warming up for the Yankees doing one sometimes you can throw hard the ball doesn't move and you're in trouble [Applause] that was Guidry he's troubled earlier in his career and the big leagues that'll get the runner over Chambliss to Guidry beats Brett to first base but Brett does his job as now McCray goes to third put out three two one McRae now over third base with one away and Billy Martin now as we watch the play again Tim was going to get rigid real good athlete meaning Brett to first base by a step Martin now he wants to talk to Ron Guidry the Yankees of course that's Mike Torrez still throwing in the bullpen the Yankees will have to bring their infield in here the last time the situation happened back in the 1st inning Collins hit a high chopper 2 nettles and prêt scored this time we've got McCrae over third base [Applause] there's no way they're gonna put Cowan's on because otis up next a tough man to double up [Applause] well Guidry had two strikes on Cowan's when he got him to hit that high chopper I think there's a feeling that perhaps you can strike out now Paulus got a quick glimpse of Whitey Herzog now Hudson wants a meeting Darwin's 3 for 16 in the series with one home running four runs batted in Yankee infield in Beijing McCrea scores and the Royals now lead three to one and Martin's going out that might be all and we'll be are laughs to be awful ron guidry this is martin's second appears here in the bottom and the third anything and is going to be Mike Torrez on to pitch to Amos Otis and with Torres coming on we'll be back with more right after this Royals lead three to one now Cowan's pretty good speed at first base one away Collins has tried to steal the base miss Aries he was cut down by much [Applause] which the Royal has have attempted to steal five bases so far in this series have been successful three times Munson has thrown two runners out Yankees are two for two and stealing bases playing a Miss by otis now louis does not really like the back that much against a Mike Torrez and that's one of the reasons that Whitey Herzog did not start him in the ball game that Torrez started here the opener I like Mike Torrez Jim Bibby Bert Blyleven Nolan Ryan Nolan Ryan they supposedly give Amos Otis a lot of trouble called strike two on Otis [Applause] Big Mike Torres from Topeka Kansas started the ball game against any Leonard they open here Kansas City and oldest backs off a fastball inside one and two [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm his call [Applause] fouled back Scylla ball and two strikes on Otis [Applause] Lupin Allah by the way as we look at al Cowen's at first base as hit Luke Piniella has hit at all five American League Championship Series games this year [Applause] on a plate on the right side sill the ball and two strikes on Amos Otis now Munson wants to go out and talk to Mike Torrez no action on the Yankee bullpen Tedrow has decided to sit down Royals leading three to one they picked up two runs in the first inning the Yankees came back with one in the third Royals have one here in the bottom of the third they've got a runner at first base with just one away the count a ball and two strikes on Amos Otis there's Collins being held by Chambliss got a modus goes down swinging for the second dog well maybe Herzog was right yep you know some hitters just have jumbled with Wonka with certain pitchers here's john watham the first baseman yeah a pitcher scooter that gave you trouble oh I don't have time to name him no but I know what you mean even Musial had one guy some of the other guys that all hit he couldn't hit him Pavan takes outside ball one [Applause] called strike got the outside corner what in wine he's gonna have to pay some attention to al Cowen's although he's been thrown out of his only attempt to steal this series with the right-handed pitcher Torrez out there he might try it and the Yankees thinking that way call the pitch out and Cowens was not running it's two balls and a strike on Wathan two hours [Music] and he's going this time and it's fouled back 2 & 2 now ins has to go back to first base [Music] two balls two strikes on John Wathan with two outs [Applause] got him got him with a breaking ball and the side is retired phil rizzuto will take you over the next three innings at the end of three the score the Royals three the Yankees one Ron Guidry got a couple of cup tough breaks in that first inning could have been out of the inning without a run being scored [Music] cliff Johnson flied to right field his first time up Yankees trying to get to split-off way inside ball one [Music] big cliff Ian's helmet gray almost went at it last night during batting practice and that would have been a mismatch fouled off the mask one a mine [Applause] Reggie Jackson moving around on the bench said he took his benching in great stride you got to give him a lot of praise for that that's low to him why it all comes down to this final game wind blowing out towards left Ince oh holy cow that ball almost hit cliff it's true and to Johnson not saying anything but he could get kicked out for what he's thinking Frank Messer without a doubt I'd say they try to pitch cliff Johnson inside but yeah yes got a piece of it [Applause] [Applause] nobody out and nobody on Yankees trailing 3 to 1 word cut filed it back [Applause] six big innings still a gold when he got around on that one splittorff has really had a great record against the Yankee's over the years Frank yes he has he's won 11 lost 5 to the Yankees and it's strange how there are pictures like that that'd be one Balter of course split our Beach other clubs too he had a round of 16 and six on the year out in front again but I know you've seen it over your career Phil Rizzuto there always seems to be at least one pitcher that can handle one ballclub and maybe not be able to beat anybody else that's true it was one pitcher the Yankees kept around for quite a while finally bought him and when they got him he couldn't win for the Yankees who was that remain nameless okay he's from this part of the country to us miss with that slow curve it's 3 & 2 remember Jim shelling back for the Washington Senators he was able to beat the Yankees they think they kept him in the league yep fine but it's gonna go foul well I'd said it cliff has hit some bullets but foul might have broke is bad on that one skipper Frank yeah Billy Martin never letting up but Johnson did break is bad on it looking for another one over there Yankee right hand hitters have had a pretty good championship series in the left-hander's with the exception of Mickey rivers have had their problems yes for sure of course the Royals just keep trotting out left-hand pitcher now the fans again I'm cliff Johnson a little bit as he gets the rosin and the tar on the bat handle and blade on buyer nick prime again goes over to get him I don't think you can blame kick cliff for wanting to fix up a new bat well I'm sure that that pitcher out there was just soon Johnson have a good grip on it he got loose with one yesterday and want to split the rosin bag out of the mound almost hit Marty Pattin out of his hands three and two nobody out nobody on that one off the end of the bat didn't quite get all of it and McRae can't get it I don't know whether that ball hit him on the head or what and Johnson's in with a double it might a hit look at cliff he's upset he didn't hit that one out white sandy hit it off the end of the bandage still carried if we could get a slow-motion shot of that it might have hit that top of the railing so a cliff big double first time ever saw a guy upset about getting a double there it is again let's see what that ball hits just off the top of the wall and bounces back in right Greg nettles who bounced to second his first time up Yankees got to keep pecking away now strike one Gregg trying to pull that ball if he does what he did last time ins will advance Johnson a third he bounced out to second that's right still early in the ballgame you can pick up that one run here and pick up another one later you're tied to pick up another one you're ahead good oh no he popped it up and that's a big out George Brett I'd said it nettles will pull 95% of the balls but in this series he hasn't been doing it looking down at Royals stadium getting a bird's-eye view from a camera up on top of the Royals scoreboard out of a center field right Chris Chambliss who has really had a rough series keep saying he's ready he's due he's overdue one out bouncer my tag go with that good arm throws him out and there if nettles had to have advanced Johnson a 30 would have scored on that one but he's at third now with two out and Paul Blair who hit a hot shot to Brett at third base will be the batter split off is keeping his pitches down well that is the sixth groundout three-to-one the Royals in front pitch out but he was not going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] strike one well I said first little high with a breaking pitch two and one rockello flashing the signs White's a good hit and run man keep an eye on Rojas and Michael tires shoelace long season Frank Messer winding down with this ballgame yes I'd say some though the Yankees and the Royals much more fortunate than the Phillies and the Dodgers in the day have had much better weather to play their Hall games right he's going the hit-and-run his on he filed it off Rojas will have to come back his cookie [Music] two and two [Applause] struck him out third strikeout for Torres he is quick tonight in the hand from Freddy platic bounced to short Fowler the catcher here's hit in every game up till this one last year and this year [Applause] ball one [Applause] not only is he hit never game scooter he's driven in nine runs in the two years of the championship series between the Yankees and the Royals hmm ball two through another two men are out three two one the Royals lead bottom of the fourth there goes cookie what a jump my tech takes it no chance for Munson saris never even bothered to look bad Rojas who got a running jump that's smart baserunning yes it is here he goes looks back to watch the play takes his slide at a second base but no throw down there by Monty stole that base on Torres pitch was a strike lying a right-field tough play for Blair foul ball holy cow is that close whoo Rojas back to second Torres got to get that slider down he's been getting it up [Applause] than exciting year exciting playoffs and then still the World Series to go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] five feet four inches Freddy Patek [Applause] outside 3 & 2 Peggy Rojas down there at second place is listed as 38 years of age when he retires at the end of this yield probably be 41 or 42 yeah he started playing ball in this country in 1956 which would have made him only 17 years old bouncer to third nice play by nettles and frozen mount a beautiful clutch play by Greg Nettles no runs a hit no errors a man left into four Royals three Yankees one pitch they said centerfield he reached out for that fastball drilled into Center Bucky Dent at first just before Bucky came up I said to Frank this is the inning for the Yankees that is scooter Mickey he's struck out and ripped his single disentis stole a base and scored that takes Mickey to get on to make things happen for the Yankees right and then it takes Munson to come up in the clutch [Applause] like wine mcfluffster bunch usually say man Bluffs a bunt bring the third baseman head there's duck bird up in the bullpen but Brett can't get any closer and they're gonna have trouble getting all at that ball had hit the ground they'd had never gotten him and Mickey stepped on Watson's foot he didn't move it off the bag quick enough but they both looked at one another almost let it drop Dennett second here's the play again the pitcher split off hazard underhand toss to Wathan ouch I'd say Watson has not played that much for space John Mayberry normally out there but Mayberry came out during the course of yesterday's game and had to leave and was not able to start tonight I will here and I'll bounce to short and walk three two one the Royals lead in the top of the fifth low ball one [Applause] all split off bouncer right at Patek dent had a hold at second they got him human out areas the Yankee captain Thurman Munson robbed of a base set on a fine play by pot Tech in the first single right to drive in the one Yankee run in the third Munson has knocked in five runs down the series he has six hits in 18 trips 333 batting average [Applause] every time Munson comes up here last the plate umpire in this case Nick Remington to take a look at the baseball and that time it will come out of play huh well Thurman is one for three and splittorff didn't like that ball just because he changed it so he gets another one fans like that two men out wind has been blowing the left the only man to take advantage of it so far has been cliff Johnson and we hit his right off the end of the band otherwise it been a long gun lowball one [Applause] [Applause] then it's second writer Frank white throws him out man left into four and a half Orioles three Yankees one bred triple the right-center field the ball got over Mickey rivers ten and all the way to the wall McRae scoring Brett at third al Cowen's at a ground ball real high chopper really and Brett was able to score run number two the Yankees got one run back in the third with two outs Mickey rivers singled and stole second came home on munsen's single the right-field and the Royals headed to run in the third inning on a leadoff double by Hal McRae he moved up on an infield out and scored on al Cowen's single 11 I don't have the time [Applause] when a tough man an infield hit and scored in the first doubled and scored in the third ball one [Music] line nice play by Willie Randolph well-timed leap one away how do you get that in my gray outer stuff out is never an easy out George Brett has triple-a driving a run and scored and bounced to first base to help set up the second run [Applause] vah line big battle in that first anyone Brett slid hot in a third - and Oh both teams coming out in the field my cars there's Greg Nettles Reno nettles in Brett they were the ones that got into it ball four first walk given up by Yankee pitches in the ball game [Applause] now alcohol is Nikki's had stopped Palin's after the first game when he got three hits and the first time up in this game but then he ripped single a left he is driven in two runs [Applause] one out there goes Brett and once the Stroh they got him great throw by Munson boy he has really been throwing in this series Frank Jessie is thrown well Brett thrown out Willie Randolph making the tag down at second base we'll watch the play again Munson straightens up and the perfect throw to Randolph well he's got it easy tag on Brett coming in another angle on it the pitch was a strike to towns now it's one a money [Applause] [Music] two balls in a strike two men out nobody on three-two-one Royals bottom of the fit [Applause] good slider 2 & 2 looking back those it oh that was the third man Monson is thrown out stealing in this series remember the one with the big argument we had dental at Frank white at second the umpire said he missed him cried foul he jammed him [Applause] [Applause] waiting patiently for Cowan's off the end of the bed Oh Willie's got a hurry safe he called on all the fowl and Martin is going out there Sam listen char is all over the first base umpire bill Deegan I thought he called that play a little too soon violence can fly and Billy Martin what's it he's been ripping the umpires the whole series [Applause] gotta be a basin that's another argument betting is going to lose no doubt about that [Music] the umpires go along aways and playoffs and World Series then they would go during the regular season by now Billy would have been gone they gave him a little more time nod you as long as he watches his language down there and chooses his words carefully he'll stay in the ball game [Applause] there's the play again let's watch it well from that camera angle is just no way to tell No [Applause] another angle Frank let's see we can see on this angle Randolph getting it over there as quickly as he can to close to tell the auto finish that's why an umpire's job is so tough even watch that over and over again the umpire down they're a lot closer to it he's got to make the judgment call and in his judgment the runner was safe at first base all right Amos Otis man a bunt single and struck out strike one that is a tough play even on the artificial surface the man has speed and talons does that ball gets by the pitcher it's going to be a close play at first they have motus has trouble with the hard stuff bounces one toward second and Randolph's throwing a dirt scooped up by Chambliss beautiful play oh-ho man he snatched that one no runs a hit no errors a man left at the end of five Royals three Yankees one [Music] oh what a cut child shifted strength one you want off and see Piniella take that bigger rip at a pitch but sometimes he'll make up his mind on the first pitch he's going to go all the way with it then he'll shorten up on the swing [Applause] whoa split Oz been in there all the way [Applause] now twice will went for the home run now he'll have to protect the plate and that's when he's more dangerous until you have to give split-off credit fill of the 15 off so far 10 have been on ground balls and indication he's had his pitches down right one ball two strikes [Applause] [Applause] flyball right field but Cowan's will get it one away and now big cliffs Johnson flied to right and double the high off the wall and left just missed a homer [Applause] remember the Yankees have Reggie Jackson on the bench tonight but he's available for pinch hitting duties [Applause] ball one even mind that at the relief core for Kansas City mingori is the only steady left-hander huh two balls no strikes where's Larry Gore Andy Hassler but if those who done the better jobs in relief the right-handers Byrd and littell [Applause] three two one the Royals leading in the top of the six one out nobody on curveball three we're a nothing on cliff Johnson on deck Greg nettles and the Yankees need some baserunners [Applause] ball four and Johnson is on and that's the second walk given up by split-off and our middle to bounce the third second and pop the third and Greg had problems not hitting the long ball so far they have not made a mistake on that is this old series really pitched him away right one even just about here what goes on in the meeting before the series started bear down on Nettles bear down on Chambliss bear down on Jackson one on one of course you bear down on everybody but they said they've been pitching the left hand power hitters on the Yankees particularly careful something got loose out in right field from the stands that's why time was called [Applause] low - um one else Todd Stern in that Kansas City bullpen just walked Johnson has a two ball one strike count on Greg Nettles [Music] [Music] [Applause] we got him with an off-speed pitch there to intrude my tears are Royals not bothering the whole Johnson clothes foul tip held by the catcher settles down on strikes it's only the second strikeout for split-off but a big one and our Chambliss when up twice is that last pitch just a foul tip right into the Met pitch seem to be moving away from medals yep by Chambliss twice as bounced to short [Applause] the hero in the final game of the playoffs last year takes a strike [Applause] 1:01 told you many times split off is not overpowering but he has been pitching the spots beautifully he is a control pitcher he tries to hit the corners and has been doing so ground all right at white ooh tricky hop but he got it and throws him out no runs no hits no errors a man left at the end of five and a half Orioles three Yankees one ride bottom of the sixth three two one Royals lead strike one on the first pitch by Mike Torres [Music] lo won a money all three royal runs have been charged to run giggly [Applause] he chopped at a high fastball fouled it back upstairs remember scooter you told me you'd seen Lacock play for the Cubs on occasion and he used to be a pull hitter at Wrigley Field but here when we've seen him he has tried to go the opposite way that's right and I tend he gotta give him credit for adjusting Danny goes to left but fouls it off I guess sort of an inside-out swing it's got a good swing he was eight for 22 as a pinch hitter this year on reason those pinch hitters have that high 290 batting average that I'm on a good breaking pitch down and in fourth strikeout for Mike Torres [Applause] [Music] and as Sparky Lyle up in the Yankee bullpen cookie Rojas robbed of a base hit on a great play by Piniella and in single-a center and stole a base good slider strike one [Applause] lo one of mine [Applause] strike two bouncing is short nice app to dint two men out cookie still hustles down that line the kicker lucky denture Darrell Porter singular item was robbed of at least a triple on a great play by Mickey rivers [Applause] deep - let's sit up Pinella those got a bead on it and makes the catch backing up well Frank miss it been a pleasure working with you again Frank will take over and carry you through the rest of this ball game and I'll save Frank after the game okay pal was it and the Royals with three runs on eight hits no errors the Yankees one run five hits and no errors Paul Blair has gone over to rounding out 2/3 popping up to the second baseman and split off ready to work Blair takes a strike [Applause] deep to left field by Wow Paul Blair had his pitch jaws pulled it foul [Applause] split-off started to work better ever now Blaire steps out [Applause] breaking ball bounced to third treble apt a hurry and gets it over in time one away here in the top half of the seventh that is the 12th ground ball induced by pitcher Paul split off [Applause] only three fly balls to the outfield lucky dad one for two and it's low [Applause] Piniella Johnson and debt of all flied to right field those are the only fly balls caught in the outfield all too al Cowen's [Applause] one-on-one little are coming back with three days rest after pitching the opening game has been shot their balls in a strike [Applause] in the adder I feel Talon should have it two out in the seventh now the title of the batting order Mickey rivers quick has struck out single bounce back to the pitcher he is stolen a base and scored a ride scored the Yankees only run in the game as the Royals lead 3-1 on [Applause] Ricky can drive that I pitch Frankie sort of splashes on the low-pitch when he when he gets the ball up a little bit he swings about a lot quicker to get side to front a lot better okay bill white Brett down the line at third and he fouls it into the crowd for strike two that'll let Brett back up defensively trying about split we'll have bill white he'll watch him see if he starts coming up with his pitcher so far he's had the Yankees hitting just about everything on the ground well Phil just mentioned he thinks flipped over throwing harder now than he threw earlier like white gets rid of the quickly macaque one Greg Nettles off his chest can he get in good recovery he got in [Applause] Fah there's one away here in the bottom half of the seventh here let play again one thing about this turf Frank this ball out of bounds right back to me right there like playing basketball sometimes you get it on the grass you have trouble picking it up red Pontiac is over three tonight he had hit in every game of both championship series between the Royals and the Yankees coming into this one tonight he has brought it out twice and popped up to Munson not just right [Applause] and the outer right field we're going back and he's got it we're got a good jump on the ball the gray the batter he said two for three tonight at one time the Yankees got him he was a tough out a line drive what a round off grabbed and a leaping catch proud of that he had beaten out an infield hit and doubled he is scored twice [Applause] I think bill white if the Royals had to look around for a most valuable player for this championship series on their club this man would win it hands down I'd have to agree with you that it's another base hit for McRae but CB tries for two he's going for two and he's going to be out easily at second base lucky dad had the ball prime but I love waiting for him and McRae is tagged out easily to retire the side at the end of seven the score the Royals three of the Yankees won the last slide going into second base frank by how McRae takes the strike I tell you Lupin Oliver's getting all over how McRae for challenging his arm the way he did do not have the last laugh he got him yep now that's going to be a base hit for Randolph so the Yankees get the leadoff man on [Applause] my catcher in Thurman Munson Randolph on Monson coming up the Yankees trailing three to one yeah whitey Herzog's comin out Frank I don't know if fires arm is going to allow splittorf to pitch to monster or not he's got a couple guys getting loose in his bullpen as you watch why yours are come up way he's walking out I would think that he is not going to take him on but you can never tell managers do strange things and these situations there's Doug bird on your left as you look and the left-hander is steve mingori well you never know what they might have talked about on the bench while the Royals were batting split are pitching with three days rest and that's going to be all for him Billy Martin over in the Yankee dugout rod split off and may have been decided on the bench that if the first man got on he'd come out of the ballgame he gets quite an ovation as he comes off the field though this he does Frank Davis a pretty good ballgame giving up just one run on on six base hits and we mentioned earlier as he tips his hat we mentioned earlier that he was starting with three days rest ron guidry starting with two days rest and even with the average for five days respiratory does not finish what he starts so we expected him to come on the ballgame at some point we'll be back with more baseball right after this Reggie Jackson bat in hand and the Yankee dugout ducked down the tunnel [Applause] and going on a breaking ball it's one-on-one what do you think Bill White of Munson gets on that you'd see Jackson bat for Piniella or hold him down for Johnson I tell you Frank the way Piniella has been hitting the ball game this series uh you you would think they'd let him bat although you you don't know you figure if he does use Jackson Herzog Mike Connor with man Gauri who is still warming up out there [Applause] ball and two strikes the Royals are leading 301 were in the 8th inning Randolph's leadoff single the Yankees six hit in the ballgame he struck in our last ball I was think Frank the Jackson would be more apt to bat for Johnson than Fidel and I already have calls not some back and they're going to send Jackson up another will bat for himself alright Bill Lewis double grounded out to third and flied to right here now I don't think Herzog would hesitate should he want to to go out and bring the left-hander in because after Jackson will be nettles and Chambliss both left-handed batters although I think he'll let Burt go on and pitch to Jackson he wanted to write a script you'd say a base hit for Piniella to put two men on and bring Jackson up has the potential go-ahead rot and hope that he can get his first one of the series but went after Randolph ah that's gonna be a base set Randolph on his way to third Lourdes throws at a second base to hold Piniella at first and the Yankees have runners on the corners you know the way Luke came out here with great intensity Frank I think of all the AG's all the eggy's even much soon Piniella probably wants to put in this ballgame about it probably more than any of them he really came out fighting came on the dugout the other Daisy Royals were taking batting practice what are you single centers doing out there we really challenged them from from the start all right here's Reggie Reggie Jackson batting for cliff Johnson Reggie did not start the ballgame tonight because of his past history of not being able to hit split off and his problems with the outfield on the artificial turf he took the benching very very well Matt he takes low ball one Reggie can turn this ballgame around and look at Randolph at third base all you have to do Frank with this man as make one mistake with it and he's strong enough to eat it out of any ballpark not only to right field but here to left-center all right bill Wow they're back 1 & 1 toughest job in baseball might be pinch-hitting especially if you're a regular player and Jax has played regularly all of his career coming out there mentally it's tough I'm just right important thing now Frank also not only you're thinking about Jackson but the important thing is making sure you get that running from third base but you've got to get the bat on the ball there's only one away Yankees need that run better to go into the ninth inning down one instead of two out into centerfield Otis coming on and he can't get to it on his playing deep couldn't get it it's a base hit Randolph scores I know it's a 3 to 2 ballgame no Frank we've been talking all year about how Depot displays and Amos sort of stopped as that ball went out to centerfield did not get a good jump on it and just couldn't get to it he stopped long enough worth the fall in front of him here it is here making that short hop Randolph and early scores some third base the anchors are down just one and now they've got the go-ahead runs on the base [Applause] pop it up and I think that's gonna be out of play and we'll be in the seats one ball one strike it's a little tight late innings one run difference in this ballgame the everybody feels the pressure [Applause] while I'm pissed right good slide arm slider by mingori looked like a fastball but slid over like a look at skipper Billy Martin and the Yankee dugout Angora normally you look for that knuckle curve or that screwball from him nettles little surprised at the slider right-field Collins is going back daddy's got it mothers do not sag they hold on there to down [Applause] Bateman [Applause] Nevada will be chris chambliss with two outs runners at first and second the Yankees down by Iran here in the eighth inning big thing here with mingori and Chambliss Frank is I don't think Mingora can throw a fastball by Chris chris has been swinging just a little late but it's been on the good fastball now mingori hangs that curb or doesn't throw all over the class ball with a lot of velocity Chris can jump on it [Applause] sidearm and smothered by white goes to second they backed action white Reggie Jackson arguing that he was safe pot deck is knocked down by Reggie at second base and the Yankees are retired here in the eighth inning an outstanding play by Frank white Reggie went in hard tried to get the bag hot dang at the end of seven and a half the score the Royals three in the Yankees two bar s comes rolling in to breath Greta's tripled routed out walk the escorter rotten better dinner on tonight how to play on the left side [Applause] lucky dad gets a nice hop and there's one away tastes offense looking ahead Frank mess it'll be Paul Blair Bucky Dent and Mickey rivers against steve mingori in the ninth inning for the ages Dory's has done some kind of job Mike coming out of the bullpen for the first time since 1974 really slammed the door on the Royals he has done a very very good job struck out four walked one allowed only three hits all the runs have been scored before he came out of the ballgame Torres will work to al Cowen's the rightfielder challenge is true the three John's got an infield hit on a chopper in the fifth inning Reggie Jackson over him the Yankee dugout alongside manager Billy Martin got the quarter it's 1 & 1 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] no it isn't Mickey rivers gets there looked like it might drop for the base hit but rivers got a good jump and picked it up Mickey's had some kind of series Frank with the bat and with the glove scale the wall grab that long fly ball off of Darryl Porter back in the fourth inning that would have been a run scored and possibly a double or triple reporter enough question about it better like the way Mickey went back on that ball jump bought at the wall kicked off the wall with his foot held on to it two outs and Amos Otis is the batter Otis is 1 for 3 but it for a base hit in the first enemy struck out in the third thrown out on a fine play by Randolph and Chambliss in the 5th one ball one strike [Applause] they're working on PopTech over there in the Kansas City Royals dugout like to a ball and two strikes these fans are chanting a old Frank but I don't know if they realize that a hole does not do well against Mt hey-oh being amos otis and mt being Mike Torrez two balls and two strikes [Applause] just missed three and two on Otis well if he's gonna do well it ought to be on this because it's got to be a fastball he's been working Otis away I want us know it isn't gonna be up he knows it isn't going to be up an end so he'll be out there charged stands off the plate see how far he stands off the plate and deep so he's got a win on the pitch Pat it is outside motus gets a walk only the second given up by Torres mic will take time to tie his right shoelace the Royals have been in creative too and with the left hand hitting people a coming up Billy Martin is coming out Martin will very possibly go to Sparky Lyle Lyle is warmed up in the Yankee bullpen Sparky out there waiting for the call don't look Frank hits the ball the other way much of the time but he might he is going to let Mike stay in there because my burly unless you make a mistake and where you throw a fastball with no velocity all or hang a breaking ball a will most of the time hit the ball the left the left center he's not really gonna hurt you he might get a base hit but he's not going to hurt you that much with the long ball that were talking about that earlier with the Phil was it overlooked hockey used to be a pretty good pull hitter when he was with the Cubs but now he's going the other way he struck out of runner goes pitch out let's see a Munson gets him he's saved Otis is safe despite the pitch out now it's a problem talk because going the other way a single will score here's Otis getting a good jump this is only the fifth stolen base with the Royals in this series little short hop Pat the ball been all the way on the fly I think they might have had Otis you see Martin now moving his outfielder Rivers toward left field macaque fouls are taught the upper deck on the left side well they said Frank before the series that the Royals would take advantage of Munson and the Yankee pitches well they've stolen five bases now they've been taught three times Yankees have stolen twice they haven't been caught yet le Howard on the CB two balls and a strike to Lacock Amos Otis at second base after a walk and a stolen base two out Riaan wine laughter that seems to be alright as you saw him walking down by the bench in the dugout flipping a little bit strike two three and two on Lacock [Applause] low fastball and Lata back-to-back base on balls African memoir March coming out and that's got to be off of Mike Tora the whole season boils down to this one ball game the winner of this game tonight will go on to play the Dodgers in the World Series for the loser of the ball game it's all over until next year I think Yankee fans has got to be happy with their ballclub Frank no matter what happens here the back all year they overcome a lot of things 1 2 pitch he struck came out to retire the side Lyle comes in to fan Rojas and will go to the bar to the top half of the ninth inning and here we go to the ninth inning now lowball one Dennis Leonard one of only three 20 game winners in the American League this year route it back Dennis Leonard born in Brooklyn New York gonna die on a conic the one buddy he lost well during the regular season he made one relief appearance during the season and picked up a save in that ballgame they've just moved the centerfielder on a straightaway where pops up outside of first give Lacock as a play no he will not flair is still alive Kansas City is leading three to two everything boils down now to this top half of the ninth inning Roy white is on deck pets of all Phil Anto look like that hard slider from Munnar missing just blown away foul out of play look not chasing but no chance sighing I'd follow one of the Yankee pitching coaches before the ball team very calm down on the Yankee clubhouse he said he brought you do the best he can you run the ball that's the way it's meant to be lare looks wha dad that's going to drop for the basehead Blair is on with a key leadoff single here in the ninth inning or Paul Blair coming through now we're going to have a discussion over halfway between the home plate and third base Dick Howser Roy white had a quick discussion Billy Martin has do it has a decision to make here whether to let white bunt or to get the runner over or let him swing away normally you played a win at home and played a tie or you played a tie at home and went on a road but this is a little bit different situation hi Bill we'll see how it goes Roy white as we said doubled twice off Leonard in that ballgame the other night Roy double the left-field he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple and he also doubled the right-field and gave it a score run what the Yankees want to do here Frank is get down into Munson and Piniella and Reggie Jackson if they can of course when we say they want a play to win on the road that means swing the bat played a tie on the road he would use white to sacrifice Mickey rivers remembers the on deck hitter brett is looking told the bunt down the line at third base draw is going to swing away [Applause] well bullpen is up again right-hander mark littell left-hander Larry Gura one ball and no strikes on Roy white Leonard goes after Blair try to shorten up his lead and there's artificial surface you try to get a little extra lead but don't get caught you do not want to get picked off in this situation no way [Applause] that's of all two balls and no strikes you know Frank big thing here we're talking about Ron Guidry having a pitch with two days rest and paul splittorf with three with any later is out there with just one days rest no way you can have the velocity that he'd normally ask there's Blair at first base gets his bagel eat as he can it's ball three three balls and no strikes Darryl Porter will glide you know we've talked Bill White about getting that extra step lead if you can the ball on a base hit you want to go as far as you can that ball gets the outfielders so fast while you're talking Frank Mickey rivers went back to the Yankee dugout and said Martin had something to say to him I think Vicki just went back for a drink peed on nervous [Applause] all right bill 302 Roy white he takes a strike friend won the Royals are leading critic to us the title tonight Blair at first base nobody out we handle where is going white fouled it back Yankees gambling running Blair [Applause] three and two on white only danger there is hitting a line drive right at one of the infielders on our chases Blair back again of course moving Blair keeps out of the DoublePlay to makes one of those infielders move either the shortstop top deck or the second baseman Frank white got to be a hold either on the left side of second or the right side of second where's going and white fouled it back pot tack moving into cover second base [Applause] this is brinksmanship a lot of guys will play this thing safe and let Blair stay there first base and see what white does Martin going all out he's gambling gamble you're saying this in effect and has to be part of this picture was taken on the first night and part of it was taken on the second right-hander against the left-handed pitcher but I want you to find out Blair is going again ball for white walks and the X have runners at first and second now here's another problem of Frank Lester do you let Mickey rivers swing the bat or do you let him but now Mickey of course will not get into too many double plays but I don't know if let's see might be decided for Billy Martin oars are coming up they've got Larry Gura left-hander out there and Mark littell a right-hander so if you go through anybody know it's gonna be the left-hander Gura he's already made the sign for girl he wants girl to pitch to Mickey rivers Herzog said Gore just didn't get the job done thought he was throwing too many fast balls not going to his off-speed pitch when the Royals think Rubens is gonna but and George Brett could almost shake hands with Mickey rivers waves down the line oh I tell you Frank right now it'd be a good time to let him swing that bet and I think that's what Dick Howser is telling them the count is one ball and no strikes girl almost has to throw a fastball here and the way this infield is set up there is Bret there and Pete Lacock who really is not a good fielding first baseman is in close at first base and I think I think I'll let Mickey swing that bat look at that infield nobody's in the right position they're all looking for a button [Applause] he's got a swing one on one as long as they play that way he's got to swing that thing forced him to go back to normal position while they keep it the same way thread in pot tack almost over to third bobby was gonna bump that time and took a pitch out of the strike zone two balls and a strike you know this situation is beneficial the Yankees franking him they've been here before they won last year this is new to the Royals they've got some people out there who were very tight in house they're just old rivers swing the bat he didn't bother to give him a son he said swing that thing a lot of open spaces on the infield [Applause] and he fouls it back two balls two strikes now that'll will allow the infield to go back to normal depth normal position and he really won't make that much difference anyway with River speed he's gonna chop that ball someplace two on nobody out the Yankees down a run here in the ninth inning [Applause] and it's through the right side that will tie the ballgame up Paul Blair will score the tying run Roy white goes to third and Mickey rivers has come through again for the Yankees Roy white at third now with a potential go-ahead run and Whitey Herzog is going back to his bullpen again and I think this time Frank see when he wants the right-hander mark littell he's got littell out there throwing and he's already made the move for the right-hander good position for the Yankees have got runners at first and third nobody out and they're gonna bring in the sinker baller Mark littell as girl leaves Willie Randolph is 1 for 3 tonight with a run scored nobody out the infield in tight runners at 1st and 3rd and here we go up high ball one good speed all around white at third rivers at first Randolph at the plate good speed well this is a fighting Yankee ballclub right yeah I think you got to be proud of it let's go look at white at third base coming back they've been coming back all year they've done a lot of good things all year you're right about that what Oh peach low outside Porter had to scramble for it two balls and no strikes and while you're talking about the Yankees you got to talk about the Royals to a young expansion team put together really for two years in a row now they've been on this thing and have come so close each year you look at much [Applause] they've got it over come on the Yankees have tied it up three to three they have runners at first and third here in the ninth inning [Applause] littell steps off Randolph steps out dry white at third Mickey rivers at first [Applause] [Music] [Applause] - on pitch it's a ball three and wine white at third infield in close you see them all uptight to the inter line the cause of the third-base coach [Applause] in the air centerfield that'll get the go-ahead run in as Otis drifts back and makes the catch why white will score the Yankees lead 4 to 3 Mickey rivers tagged up and went to second you know Frank I hear Phil Rizzuto over next to us he's got some kind of he's got some kind of cold and I don't know if he's gonna finish this ballgame I better go over there and see if we can make it you know where we're at a partition here that sort of our official thing and Phil is really making a lot of noise over there is he happy Thurman Munson will step in for the Yankees Munson is one for four he drove in the Yankees first run with a single to right field there is one out rivers at second the Yankees are leading four to three [Applause] bouncing ball to the shut stop putt tag guns on the first base and a low throw is dug up by luck doc Munson is out rivers went to third there are two down here in the night the batter will be Lou Pinella who is too poor for and the pitching coach Galen Cisco is coming out of the dugout this is simply to tell to tell what to throw but now I don't think they're gonna walk but on the pitch to Reggie Jackson but Lou has had a pretty good series against the Kansas City Royals so far he has two base hits and four times at-bat here in this ball game and he's 7 for 20 on the season so it's just a strategy discussion to find not just where they want to pitch Piniella probably in the end up pitching him inside Frank as we look at Whitey Herzog talking to Charlie Lau Lau was a pitching coach or the batting coach for the Royals there's Mike Torrez and Billy Martin there probably ended up trying to jam Piniella with sinking fastball let's see where Porter puts that glow well there are some Yankee fans here yeah they have been quiet up until now well they've got something to chat about now the Yankees have taken the lead four to three bouncing ball left side Brett throws had another run scores the Yankees lead 5 to 3 and Piniella will be waived out a second and an error charged Frank tit Brett here watch Brett go to his left now he comes up with this ball cleanly I think he tries to get a little bit too much on it here he is he's got plenty of time takes about four steps turns the ball loose hi no way Pete Lacock can get to it River scores and the Yankees lead by two and it brings up Reggie with Piniella at second base two outs Jackson got a key hit on the 813 pinch-hitting for cliff Johnson to drive in run number two for the Yankees Paulette foul you know one thing Frank that Phil mentioned he had talked to Reggie Jackson before the ball game and a lot of guys would have been very upset by not being able to start this final game Billy Martin decided to pencil and Paul Blair and there's Billy cheering for Ruth Reggie Reggie took it well did not grumble didn't do anything and he's come in and got a key hit in this ballgame mark of a true Pro Bill fastball at the right side Frank white is up with it I've draws him out but the Yankees have taken the lead with two runs do it [Applause] taking the lead here five two three three runs here in the night yes Lyles got the baseball and a chance to win the ballgame Sparky Lyle is the pitcher of record [Music] you know the key blot a key plays this ball game Frank one of the key plays Mickey rivers going all the way into centerfield as we look at Stan Lee the shortstop leaping high and grabbing a drive off the bat of Darrell Porter Frank White's great stop on Chris Chambliss and the eighth inning saving a run for the Royals Lou Piniella made an excellent catch on cookie Rojas in left-center field a lot of good plays and [Applause] all right we go to the bottom half of the ninth inning here in Kansas City the Yankees are leading five to three we can't forget either the great job done by Mike Torrez coming on in relief and going five in the third inning no question about it holding the Royals right there if they destroyed three runs off Ron Guidry in two and a third Torres came in and held him could he walk two men in the eighth inning tiring while in wild a Porter now we go to the bottom of the ninth got he popped up Brett Stanley the shot stopped and there's one away [Applause] now Frank way [Applause] why does fly dick the left struck out and grounded out to third the Yankee is down at one stage of this ballgame to nothing then down three to one white takes a strike game back cut the lead 3 to 2 and then scored three runs in the top half of the ninth inning to lead 5-3 strike to no balls into strays Sparky Lyle one of the toughest competitors you'll find anywhere in sports and look at that Yankee bench cheering him on [Applause] that will be a basin Mickey rivers has to play the mouth and light as I let beans unless part deck bounces into a double-play they're going to get to Hal McRae and the grades been one of the Royals on his banners we need to get Frank white there Frank all right pot I got the Yankees set up for the double play quite on it first-base dime call now is the first base coach Steve bars much to talk to his base running ha tag sweden's of Messrs attack is over poor sorry Frankie got a busy Yankee bullpen dick Tidrow and Don coming out there warming normally we'd wait until the picture got to him but I think it's of interest now unbelievable the way the Yankee bench is cheering while on these got into strikes right Wyatt at first place look at that Yankee bench clip Johnson leading the chairs ground ball the 3rd metals so Randolph DoublePlay and the Yankees have won the pennant look at Lyle now wait a minute don't hurt anybody out there that you've got to play Tuesday look at him they're so happy just completely mobbing Sparky Lyle who has come on to win his second game in a row he was the winner yesterday unbelievable and just a mark of dejection right there the shortstop Freddie Patek the Reggie don't wanna lose his gap look at him everybody's happy Frank you know you know you know Frank you look at this and then some kind of victory rule for the Yankees they were down late in the ball game came back picked up a run on the 8th inning came back and picked up three runs in the ninth inning to go ahead and you know that's the mark of a champion coming back that way after being down playing away from home where the Royals had bragged so much about when we get them back to our place the carp is going to get him our hitters are going to get on splittorff is going to beat him well all that was nice but the game is still played down there on the field and when it's all over the best team is going to have more wins in the other and the final score here the Yankees won it by a 5 to 3 and they win their second straight American League pennant
