[Music] [Applause] can you a lot of new places in one place it takes a while for the tuber Jill I just want to respond to see getting into spring training getting into the other guys I put in real quick right away everybody was very professional cared about each other off the field as well as on the field this club played and bounced back from so much adversity it was wonderful and you can remember instances every player contributing to a big win and much-needed win if you lifted this team it's kind of never give up attitude and this team had a lot of fight confidence from everybody no player itself everybody believed in effective we've can good things are going to happen for you if you keep your same attitude and you can use your same work ethic I mean there were so many of these stories of great human interest stories that if you tried to make a movie out of it they wouldn't buy it and say nobody will be able to be able to come back in New York and playful in the USA into the 96 and be able to win the world championship this is for the fan babies are good you don't have to be a baseball aficionado to know about this place the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx New York there are many physical things that tell you all about the once-in-a-lifetime moments that have taken place here but beyond the left-center field wall here in Monument Park are the faces of the players and managers that have helped make this the most storied sports building on the face of the earth the only recent era befitting all this team history were the 70s when the Yankees went to three straight World Series winning back-to-back world championships in 1977 and 78 back to the Fall Classic they went only to lose in 1981 and that's when the Don Mattingly era began the beloved captain of the Yankees never saw the postseason until his final year in spite of being on some very very good talented Yankee teams by 1990 the Yankees were in a complete state of decline 95 games and that's when the franchise turned to general manager jean-michel and manager Buck Showalter asking them to turn things around and they did they reinstalled pride in the Yankee pinstripes and that spirit of winning and by 1994 they had the Yankees good enough to win it all that year however the player strike killed every dream and by 1995 after resuming the mission the Yankees won the first ever American League wildcard on the season's last day and they led the Seattle Mariners two games to nothing after winning dramatically here in the Bronx only to lose three straight games in the dreaded Kingdome apparently in 1995 faith was not something that was on the Yankee side [Applause] the shockwaves of the playoff loss in Seattle reverberated into the offseason manager Buck Showalter wouldn't be back captain Don Mattingly made to realize that his starting days with the Yankees were over Joe's early retirement Mike Stanley the power hitting catcher was allowed to walk as a free agent along with super-sub Randy Velarde throwing the heat for these highly unpopular changes was owner George Steinbrenner although his newly hired general manager Bob Watson claimed full responsibility for the playerbase I have a championship we're now on a World Series right and that is basically bottom line I want to win the new manager of the New York Yankees mr. Joe Torre that's one missing piece to my puzzle in my career I've managed for a dozen years I played for a few ball clubs I've had good years I've had bad years I have never been in the World Series I've been the postseason and coming to an organization that has the burning desire to win was very important in making my decision the youngest of three Torre brothers learned baseball on the marine parks and lots of Brooklyn he played over 2,000 games without a pennant and managed over 2,000 more with a sub 500 record fueling media skepticism as to how this good-natured man and his staff would handle the pressure of working for George Steinbrenner for support Joe called an old friend of baseball out of retirement to become his bench coach Don Zimmer I mean I'm 65 years old I would love to go to one more World Series it would be fun and mainly the reason I say that is because of Joe Torre he's something special with the new manager came new players rookie Derek Jeter would get a shot at Short free agent Mariano Duncan would back up all around the infield much as Randy Velarde had done Tino Martinez traded from Seattle would have the daunting task of trying to fill Don Mattingly shoes at first I knew coming into spring training that the media and everybody's gonna focus on me being there he plays him Don Mattingly and whatnot and would probably carry over throughout the whole season so we had a good team coming in and I was just trying to fit in as best I can right away in replacing catcher Mike Stanley Joe Girardi was out to prove with his arm and his quickness that he too could fit in even if he didn't hit home runs heard a lot of fans were upset about the Mike Stanley thing and I understood and I was a little bit nervous about that but as the season started to progress and the pitchers started building me up and I think I kind of went over the fan and it's just been a great ride ever since the biggest question not good for his drug problems history was there anything less could he still pitch it's like starting all over again for us at Plano goes and Billy Collins was very helpful spent a lot of time with him you know on the fill away they were talking go a lot of different things still you have doubts you don't know if you're able to compete at that level again VIN whistle gave or you and a half as for David Cone the only question had been would the free agent gun-for-hire go or would he stay yes I Love New York yes my wife loves New York and here's a chance to be a Yankee for the rest of my career and the signing of free agent Kenny Rogers would also ease questions about the Yankees starting pitching tilde skeptics were far from satisfied one commentator who I like Peter Gammons on ESPN I like Peter smart man I but I remember one comment he said early in the year he said it will take the Yankees 10 years to recover from what Steinbrenner has done 10 years I don't think so [Applause] the first question of spring training howard's of veteran Yankee players adjust to a manager whose entire career had been spent in the National League I'm looking forward to playing for Joe Torre saying for the first time in his career it's kind of poetic justice but he's got a legitimate chance to win nobody knows who's the right man wrong man but I've always been impressed with Joe Torre I've always liked him as a person and as a baseball person he has a native New York he has the one quality that all native New Yorkers I appreciate in all of them his mental toughness I don't care if you're driving a cab if you're a cop or if you're the richest guy in New York you're you've got to be mentally tough and that's a great quality for people to have depth is also a great quality for a manager to have with veterans like Tim Raines and Mariano Duncan now aboard the Yankees had increased depth and mental toughness but what about their 21 year old rookie Derek Jeter was he really tough enough to become the every day shortstop every year I look for Derek Jeter to stumble a level and he doesn't stomp he just seems to dominate dominated rookie dominate a moves up to double it well we'll try them there it's a little quick move before sped up he dominated there and we force-fed him to Columbus and he dominated there he could be one of those special ones 1995 had many people believing that Bernie Williams had finally become one of those special ones good as he was the best team yet to come everybody recognizes that Bernie Williams is a great player he feels that and I think he's going to get off to a very fine start I don't think we've seen I think we've seen just the beginnings of the kind of player that he can be I expect him to be a much better player this year an even better player in 1997 club pitching doc gooden hadn't pitched at all for nearly two years Milito Perez admits most of 95 has had Jimmy key with rotator cuff surgery Kenny Rogers was presumably healthy but Scott tamanegi was coming off elbow surgery we got a lot of question marks on this and there will be answered for us and it could be we all could be very happy or very sad certainly baseball fans of the Tampa Bay area were happy to see the Yankees launch drink training in the brand new legends field named for all those Yankee legends that had made the men in pinstripes the most legendary pro sports team of the century living Yankee legends lined up in front of home plate for the new parks inaugural with the first pitch thrown by their most recent Hall of Fame inductee Phil Rizzuto holy cow a strike the Yanks were ready to play ball [Applause] snow may have put off the season opener in Cleveland but the next day rookie shortstop Derek Jeter wasted no time in getting the Yanks off on the right foot with his first big league homers holy cow the Yankees took both games from the Indians before venturing down to Texas where Jimmy key faced the first serious comeback test after rotator cuff surgery to meet the Rangers beat him sported two out there he may be throwing the ball to overthrowing Josh to shade doc Gooden got the next test and a lousy er score seven to Texas questions persisted augusto slow stars I didn't really have the greatest spring but spring training I was trying to prepare myself and get ready for the seasons and I found myself the first couple of games trying to prove the people that still have it I still go out a strikeout tenth there's ten people game instead of just stuff I could say hey there's two the things what got me here let's concentrate on the hitters and all about the bottom line is winning the games winning games was no problem for Andy Pettitte who won his second straight in the Yankees snowy home opener but for Tino Martinez getting hits was a problem in the early weeks of April bouncer out to second base as Tino Martinez continues to struggle and he is beginning to hear the boos here at Yankee that was inevitable as with me early on I thought you know I can learn from this I knew I was eventually when I'd relax did I be able to put up the type of numbers I'm capable of and and this team could win and on April 24th he helped him win 10:8 against Cleveland welcome to the frogs Tino Martinez because that is the official time the Yankee fans he knew what he was assigned to do Joe Torre zapman also unleashed a new weapon speed from Andy Fox beating out a routine grounder to spark a rally to Joe Girardi with another surprising field not in time stolen base by the Yankee catcher Joe Girardi look at you Ronnie use the bag easily already cow I'm not a long ball hitter so I wouldn't have fit really into the typical Bronx Bombers style and Joe's type of managing is the type of baseball that I'm capable of playing it makes it really exciting for the players when you're doing all kind of different things that are just sitting around waiting for a three-run homer on April 30th at Camden Yards the Yankees exasperated Baltimore with a big 13 to 10 comeback in the longest nine inning game ever a night later they forced a 6 6 tie that pushed on beyond the witching hour and into the 15th inning when they loaded up the base of 4 Tino Martinez an early sign of destiny to left field well here it is quick slam home run a grand slam by Tino Martinez in the 15th inning Lina 15th inning home run to enable us to sweep that two-game series whatever it was was a great feeling because they're coming right back to New York and the fans got behind me 100% from that point on and helped carry me to the rest of the season the Yankees were in first place for the first time a day later David Cone beat Chicago to give the team a two-game lead over the Orioles that's how it stays for six weeks until the Yankees return to Cleveland's Jacob field back in my hair a three-game sweep over the club with the league's best record five straight for the Yankees at Jacob field and a four-game lead on June 23rd gave New York its first taste of elbow room in the divisional race with Baltimore while Yankee starters showed their vulnerability throughout the season reliever Mariano Rivera from the first week on seemed virtually invulnerable to pressure fatigue and with opponent hitting a mere 189 against him invulnerable to opposition lumber well did I just feel like like they don't litter gonna hit no Mariano they really didn't know how to hit it 130 strikeouts the most by any Yankee reliever ever and streaks of 26 consecutive scoreless innings and most amazing 15 consecutive hitless innings between April 19th and May 5th numbers unheard of for a middle reliever just some of the streaks that he ran off this year you know I've never seen a middle relief or setup man do what he had he has done time and again the mild-mannered Panamanian protected slim leaves in the sixth seventh and eighth innings without seeming to break a sweat to keep you healthy and you constantly knew mentally prepare for conveniently you're going to have a lot of success with Rivera the Yankees were virtually guaranteed success when leading late in the game he became known as Joe Torre secret weapon while Tory called him his indispensable pitcher other managers used other words this Rivera guy we don't want to face him anymore he should be in a high early high early he need to go to a high early somewhere I don't know where that lady is but we can't hit him we should ban him from baseball should be Ben baseball illegal well if Mariano's explosive high 90s fastball wasn't illegal it certainly was lethal to most hitters in his 107 and 2/3 innings pitched in the regular season they managed only 73 hits 34 walks and untold broken bats [Music] [Applause] of course John wetland was the other half of the Yankees won through bullpen power punch but the closer saw himself as only a part of a total team effort by the Yankee bullpen struck him out John wetland coming where those sliders biking out revelry to end the game to save the game the bullpen is a place of immediacy it's it's you do it now you know you're on call and you go in and and maybe you're going to do it just one hitter but you better get it done that's your job just by everybody understanding that from an attitude standpoint is what made the bullpen what it was this here I've never been associated with a better group of guys that had the same focus in the same Drive in the same direction we all did it together wetland hit roughly half the innings of Rivera but also had better than one strikeout per inning his 43 saves in 47 chances led the league and contributed largely to the fact that the Yankees lost only one game all season when leading after eight innings it's a real great feeling at the catcher when you know if you can get through six innings you know you can shorten a game but you have an unbelievable chance of winning the game mo and John wood which tremendous all year we're unit down there and that's something that I definitely stress no one guys better than the other we feed off each other success and the Yankees owed their success as much to wetland Rivera Jeff Nelson and the rest of the Yankee bullpen as anyone in 1996 considering that ace pitcher David Cone wasn't around it's a minor miracle that the Yankees were able to forge a lead through the mid-season Cohen had been sailing along with a three-in-one record until a circulatory problem in his finger caused him to miss one start before his victory over Chicago on May 2nd to get the foul territory wait Bob makes the catch and the New York Yankees defeat the Chicago White Sox 5 to 1 in a route choeng performance by david cold coming back after missing his star because of the hand and finger problems but medical tests revealed more than hand and finger problems tone was suffering from a life-threatening aneurysm in his right shoulder and would need immediate surgery David Cone underwent successful surgery at Gombe Presbyterian Medical Center destroying the aneurysm was removed and replaced with a vein graft from the left leg I wish I could explained better to you what I'm going to be back when I'm going to pitch again I'm not sure in my heart I hope to pitch again this year that's what I'm shooting for just as Cohn could only hope for recovery his former Mets teammate white Gooden was starting to experience it after a wretched start doc found a cure with a short wind-up that a three good start before the Meredith so Kristen anti Yankees from Seattle arrived in the Bronx on the fateful eve of May 14 their doc turned magician with flight of hand assist on his mate [Music] rolling pin hard to straightaway center a puck played for Gerald Annie we live back to first here's the bouncing ball to the EDL rip centerfield things went a little deeper we got the 5th and 6th I really start to believe you know maybe we got a chance to come I was really pumped recited for him you know what a better place for him to do it I mean he's meant a lot to the city but always gets slowly fielded by Martinez wait in there Jay Buhner busy lifted in the air and we feel Tarantino waiting waiting waiting six to crack I think disgraceful especially just to do it in New York from the things I've been through the making you know back and the come back and go here in New York is a special film special feeling less than three weeks before he feared he might not get another chance to prove he belongs in the Bronx now doc not only belongs he owned the town and the torch of Destiny that would light the Yankees through all of the dark points of the season was burning bright that night at the all-star break the Yankees found themselves leading Baltimore fight six games still there was real concern over a mounting power gap between the two rival the Orioles had nearly doubled the Yankee homerun output and the gap threatened to get even wider New York went on a power hunt far away to st. Paul in the independent Northern League where Darryl Strawberry was taking one last shot at a big league company with some convincing numbers 12 for 35 batting average and 18 home runs in only 29 games [Applause] listen to this round there were a lot of teams really interested and believed that I could help them coming down to the point of second half of the season we're going to be independent race and here is a guy that has been animators has this major league experience and knows what it's all about it's a possibility he could help our ball club I'm here you know to do my best and I'll put this ballclub I'm not here to complain about anything now I'm gonna appreciate everything that happens good or bad take it one day at a time my main thing is I'm here to do what I feel I can accomplish to help this ballclub we need to be successful and that's all I want to do it was July 4th and there was Darryl Strawberry reunited with his buddy dr. hood I mean I was a tremendous fan I couldn't believe that wheels because I remember being in Minnesota not effective they tell me I threw out a rotation and he's talked about for you Darien because it's playing out Indianapolis and uh Clark had kind of died down and then I felt will happen and he'll always pour they also played on the loose I know Darryl Strawberry the Yankees went back to Baltimore after the break and strawberry wasted no time in helping them knock the old three games further back in the race [Applause] and the two-run homer by Darryl Strawberry deep work you top three in the last row it was a good filler it was just good to be able to give back to be with the guys and be accepted by the guys coming back to second happened to Baltimore with block oven and getting off to a good start and team Danielle to a good start we had really put some together there where everybody believes in each other and that was a real good film with the O's now 10 games back strawberry became an object of talk and even affection in the Bronx it already had one file with the Yankees the year before this time he was only looking to find his proper role Nathan I mean this was a guy that literally had to battle his way came to the lineup and certainly a key part of our winning yeah oh good that home run on July 28 feet Kansas City in the bottom of the night the lead over Baltimore was 12 games the largest it would ever be New York when they see you overcome your problems and you don't have to talk about you know look at me I'm tense when they see how you carry yourself and how you can your ways of living and the way you approach your business they could tell right off the bat because they have that type of knowledge thing and they respect that on August 6 strawberry filled the fan shades of Reggie Jackson with three straight dinners and five in football games a part of me was out there with our area bat delicate I talked I was apart because I can relate to the piece we had been through I was just so happy forming wheels up there in the batter's box with like part of P being right there well here is the right field going back in Bhutan with Africa cranberry has three home runs in a row I don't know if I was happy with him but I was a pretty close welcome back to New York New Yorkers are always sure to pay tribute and they did on Mickey Mantle day when Mickey's close friend and teammate whitey Ford unveiled the monuments that would join Ruth Gehrig and Miller Huggins at the stadium I wanted to be Mickey Mantle when I was 9 years old I limped for no reason when I was bar Mitzvahed I spoke with an Oklahoman drawl today I am a man Mel Allen will always be the voice of the Yankees he patented many phrases like how about that that's going going gone after his passing the Yankees wore black armbands for the rest of the year [Music] so successful beat of the team was set by Paul O'Neill and the atmosphere and the Bronx got better every day the sounds of the subway the challenge of the Deegan remained constant but the newly christened Yankee Clipper this was new it merrily sailed up from Manhattan to the stadium where another new tradition was started by the grounds crew and Mariano Duncan had created a team slogan played today and we win today that's it that's it that's right [Music] [Music] the 96 season saw many great chapters unfold like the blossoming of Bernie Williams who hit hit for power ran the bases with speed and verb and played centerfield like a classic virtuoso the teenagers signed off the Puerto Rican stand Lots 11 years before had finally reached primetime I was a little 17 year old maybe 165 170 pounds toking West and he said well I feel a lot on this kid I think with the right coaching and the right attitude you can do good thing and I remember people looking at him you know saying yeah right anyway it was just great to come here and just prove a lot of people wrong Bernie hits this one that deep left field forget it [Applause] getting doing the first pitch of the summer pity he's go the center field Bernie on the warning track Mexican play my 30 lives at centerfield oh I can't believe it he's probably exposed to drinking he goes out plays hard every day he runs out every blog you know he's diving and sliding and doing everything and it was probably a perfect person you want to mold yourself after the perfect Yankee and Bernie's eyes had long been Don Mattingly who saw the talented shy and somewhat tentative jump stir and reached out he was the back of the book and he said spring come here I want to talking doesn't want a couple of things that I've done I need to talk some stuff and he just started talking to me about the things that I have to do to become a better baseball player he said you're good but you need to live you need to do that and I was just listening to him and and in back of my mind I was saying I don't manually he's talking to me now with a 305 average 29 home runs and 102 RBIs everyone wants to talk to Bernie ball no strikes ah [Applause] up to this point you really never seen Bernie Williams throughout and really blossom on the offense inside the game I think this year Bernie Williams showed the people that he can really play the game he was always been able to run over here and play defense but as far as being a dominant offensive player he is show folks [Applause] Berni stayed strong even as his five-year-old son underwent surgery back in Puerto Rico because of an inner ear infection I remember him taking the bus from the stadium to the hotel and just realizing the possibility that he was not going to be here just it was tearing my heart apart it was just great at the same time going to Puerto Rico and showed up the room when he was and watching just jumping around up and down and being very happy because he had seen me and my my happiness was to what undisclosed that's a great deal before the season was over Ernie jr. would have a chance to come to the Bronx and watch his dad be great [Applause] not much seem to bother Andy Pettitte in 1996 not the snow that fell on the Yankee opener spite his Texas upbringing he won that won and he won 20 more to become the Yankees first 20 game winner there's another lefty Ron Guidry 122 in 1985 not bad for a 24 year old sophomore trying to keep it all in perspective of course because I know that just because you can win 10 games very fast like a loose pin and just trying to go out there and just trying to keep the game close give me a chance to win give the team a chance to win and the teams were scoring a lot of runs for me they're playing great defense and the wulfings been doing a great job and you're going to get a lot of wins like well for Seattle I'm about to go with Jeter a complete-game victory for an eternity Joe's resisted and he stopped the Yankee losing streak I think you know this game is all confidence in this all mental and I think you've got to get to the point where you feel comfortable going out there and you feel like you belong and I do feel like now that I belong in the major league I feel like I can pitch up here most importantly headed was a stopper going thirteen and three after a Yankee loss he really pitches carefully with men on and the numbers show that League hitting just 226 against it with men in scoring position got him one of the defense pitches of the inning that's been one of my strengths even in the minor league is lose my ability with runners in scoring position to make a big pitch when I need to I feel like I I really haven't had great stuff this year when I've needed a big pick Oh a big pitch or big play right back depending again this time Peter to return it in time but he serve a double play that my name would come up with issue all year long and it was able to come up with it demonstrating poise and mental toughness well beyond his years Oh while still learning on the job I suppose like I got a lot to learn and not to learn about this league and as long as we've got veteran guys on this team like Jimmy and David Cone and good and Kenny Rogers I'll look through them guys as long as they're around and for me they'll be the backbone of the staff and I consider myself just going out there and just feeling lucky to get the barber sit then just try to do my job repeated tedious little bo-peep strike down to two hours in the night Andy Pettitte with a strikeout the Yankees expected a lot from their veterans in 1996 but as destiny would have it they got the most from one of their kids Andy Pettit even though the Yankees led Baltimore by 10 games on July 31st they still wanted another big bat they got the big bat of Big Daddy denied before is probably even the most exciting night of the whole scenario the clock is getting around midnight I know that to say deadlines and one and I'm gonna get the opportunity to go somewhere to try to help somebody you know get into postseason at that point when buddy bill called me into his office or something I said ok here we go I got him I never thought I was coming to the Yankees I think that's why it was such a shock sessile fielder the man who's had more home runs than anyone else this decade scorecard settle cracks it to left is it high enough to get out it's gone one thing he did have to get used to was being a BH took me that time to just say okay I'm a Yankee you know instead of okay I'm gonna Detroit Tiger okay now me Yankee now I gotta just try to do myself to key down and just go out there and play the game Ruben Sierra had been traded away for fielder and he got his revenge first time back in the prop to break in all right the Tigers took the first two from the Yanks but sessile answered back on August 11th with a 3 run hole shot in a 12-1 he went down and got ironically the addition of Big Daddy did not protect the 10 game lead instead New York slumped in August as the offense struggled to readjust its chemistry around fielder but by the postseason they got it right a lot of people really didn't understand things they put up on that marquee out there when he says that some of the most home runs most RBIs in 290 that's true it's not a fantasy it's a true statement the Seattle Kingdom was the Yankees first stop on a 10 game road trip beginning August 26th Alex Rodriguez and company were waiting to make sure that Gooden and the Yankees would be sweep 'less in Seattle suddenly the Yankees look very vulnerable you know I go home a lot nice and just talk to the wife tell us something's not happening we're not playing like even though the engines can play getting swept in Seattle at the start of a crucial road trip pushed Yankee frustrations over the edge when you go through something like that I think that's where you find the real significance of being a close group of guys and all pulling for each other and you find out how important your manager is is to your club and Joe during the whole time in the pen this club played and bounced back from so many a when there's so much adversity he was always like we're going to get him today we're going to get him today guys hey man we've come this far let's we're going to win it let's just figure out a way to do it let's just work hard meanwhile David Cone was doing everything to get back and on September 2nd a big moment for the team a big moment for him everyone held different all mark etc Langan event strike three David Cone is certainly back sparks like ponies gusty return the Yankees bounced out of their funk after watching their lead over the Oriole shrinks a two and a half games the Yankees held a closed-door meeting to get back to the basics we play today we win today both clubs Lang and we'll climate then we know that that we have a good team and I know that we have a chance that win since the beginning what I came here and I guess a to a lot of my teammates and it's been a we have a challenge you know they're going all the way holy cow we had just an attitude that we really didn't care who the hero was but at the same time everybody felt the responsibility to do their job you know when there was call upon it of all the homespun heroes none was any younger or more surprising than the 21 year old rookie shortstop Derek Jeter he began the year batting night to ease the pressure on a kid considered not necessarily ready that hit big league pitcher we asked him I goes hobbyist you wanna see they're saying I want to have some 50 once you get there you never get any better so I said I'm as high as I can and you know I thought I I said I change that approach and I using the minor leagues and it been successful so he's the same as folks coming into the - I was so locked in on his defense that I I really never gave myself the luxury I guess of looking at any other part of his game when the season started it's a home run opening day oh you got a run on that one that's gone holy cow his first big league home run into left centerfield makes that play shallow centerfield Gary here classic Wow rookie shortstop playing his first game in 1996 against the American League champions and he is just like he was falling off in our log it was no problem [Applause] I never knew what to expect I listened to him tell me if he got to 50 to be is 250 it would be exceptional and if he played the physician faculty it would be exceptional what was beyond exception [Applause] unbelievable we've got a couple of clutch fits here and there made some great plays developed all kinds of confidence right away and just matured throughout the year and just kept his confidence and poise like it's he's been leaked ten years the Yankees six opening day shortstop in the last six years was smooth steady and a quick study for me it was the first time on a leading their efficiency first time you're going to stadium for the first time so everything you knew so it's the second half of season you're going around you you know some people you try to make some adjustment which is making adjustment as well ring hey guys is real fortunate playing out as the season progressed so did cheater a 277 batting average in the first half 350 in the second all told he has three four teams scored a hundred four times and drove in 78 more the most RBIs by a Yankee shortstop since Frank Crosetti and 30 things I think G is just an outstanding person I think that that comes first I feel you have to be able to get respecting that guy that's just next to you you have to be able to get respect to the people that watch you play and I think that's most important I understand that you know we have to go out there on the field to perform pragya has been able to do that incredibly incredible job this organization you know to find a kid that is a first-year player and to be able to go out there and do things he does it's just incredible I like him he's my friend and you know I just you know got a lot of respect to day dude I feel so happy for him and hitting one of those guys like like the rest of us you know like pathetic lyrics and the guys before and it's a great feeling you know grow up in the organization and come up and have a chance to have a World Championship and World Series ring you know in the same team that you original and it's a great story that it's a great young man he has all the best qualities on September 18 it was showdown time the Orioles came into Yankee Stadium just three games back as Scott Erickson ambi O's took a 2-1 lead into the ninth the crowd of over 50,000 watched and wonders as the Bombers run out of Heroes rookie Ruben Rivera had the answer [Music] [Applause] Reuben flip it over Alomar's love put the Yankees four games up on the bird a lead they fought to protect against all comers especially the red-hot Red Sox two out in the bottom of the 10th [Music] [Applause] they just kept coming and coming and doing doing what they had to scraping and crying literally inning by inning batter by batter pitch by pitch finally after 15 years and a 19 run outburst against the Brewers on September 25th Jeff Nelson stood on the mound in the ninth inning in the field these are the lanky lady said American League Eastern Division champion we went we were 12 games ahead and then we went down to two and a half you know that if you're not worth yourself you're going to just fade away but that that wasn't the case you know we have we have a lot of players with a lot of heart and that that's really brought us through it was October the Yankees were back in the postseason but their Division Series opponents featured a one-man wrecking crew on a mission to demolish the Bronx bomba Regas at second greer at first and a long drive to left into the corner and into the seats well george steinbrenner better check the deed because these days it's one Gonzales who owns the New York Yankee after the 6-2 win the Rangers needed just two more two more homers like Gonzales put Texas up for 1 in Game two of the Yankee stretch back to tie it into extra innings runners at first and second nobody out he squares to bunt lays it down Thursday dye gives the job the 96 Yankees had lost five of six in Arlington in Game three they trailed again in the ninth inning but in October repent change going on in line a will Centerville it is a place that revving furtively he'll score keno goes to third is that two-out base hit to left center by Mariano Duncan and the Yankees have taken a 3-2 lead Game four found New York in a deeper hole for nothing no problem said Bernie and the Yankees said adios to taste oh there it goes to left field pack pack pack pack pack second home run in a game for Bernie waves going down there it was just a different series coming from behind you know in several games you know and keeps putting the pressure on them I think it really are a real surprise meant you know the fact that we were how dis auditors that never give up and keep going hard and you know especially on tough situations you know having the game on the line know people just came through it'll be a 1 2 wetland deals hey struggle out swinging Yankees win Oh JD's win after upsetting Cleveland the Orioles were next a Bronx tear welcomed Robbie Alomar that launched the playoff plantain Palgrave [Music] [Applause] in light-filled Tarasco going back to the track to the wall and what happened here he contends that a fan reaches up and touches it but Richie Garcia says home it's a home run Myers deals swung on and driven a deeper hello sir [Applause] Yankees win ah sticky quiz burn baby burn he's done it again sided won the Serie shifted to Camden Yards where the Yankees hadn't lost all year they were not about to start the one one this one is hit the opposite way and it could be trouble it gets down sawed off cuts it off before it gets to the wall that's a huge play because Williams have to stop at third on the double by Martinez how the ball bounces away Williams Sprint's for the plate Oh strictly a reaction play I don't know to this day what make me react the way I did I knew that he was not going to throw the ball to second base but I credible on the ground and I felt Cal go time to Kozma I guess they took for granted the whole situation and they didn't expectable rolling out there in the hole and shortstop when I saw that I went like go get him it has just take this chance take your fraternity and run as fast as you can come on and drill the deep web fi let us pour that is gone a two-run home run for Gerald postseason play you can't take anything for Brandon because if you do you'll be going home here's a classic deep left-center quality play this ball is gone though during the postseason feeling like okay this is something you've never done before if you have done before you played to be in the baseball before but you just haven't been into October a bouncer to deep short Jeter long throw sizing is but he can't get there in time and the Yankees win the pennant I'm usually watching this thing on a 20 inch television set that's it's nice being inside it for a change I can't describe it a year ago I'm not working - all of a sudden a year later be in this locker room with all these guys I love and to go to the World Series I mean that was the missing piece out of my career and it's it's big and to sweep um three I mean it was beyond belief and you just felt oh how many more miracles are there [Music] good afternoon baseball fans this is Mel Allen greeting you for the final game of the 1952 World Series it's fairly cool today its topcoat weather but you can be sure that as far as those men on the diamond their concern it's mighty hot [Music] it's the best starting pitching staff in baseball took the Braves to the postseason five straight times its mission this year a simple one keep the world title in Atlanta after winning the National League East with ease the Braves disposed of the Dodgers in the division series and Joe and go [Applause] they're against the same news Cardinals they encounter their first bump in the road when they fell behind three games to one [Music] 1010 and be to play that play now maybe starting to crack you know it's a shock you know I I'm stunned I can't believe what just happened like the matter is we got to put this behind us in a hurry it's going to be difficult to do that but you know we're going to we're going to see what this Bluff those made of with the mark of a champion the Braves rocky friends the middle Lemke come home and the first gang on a single into doubles the Braves take it soon a nothing lead and it's five to nothing Atlanta here the first inning line drive base a that makes it seventh another here the second behind John Smoltz and a championship series record 22 hits the Braves cruised when the team's return to align Greg Maddux stepped up as did the Braves defense in the center field falling breakfast ignite a cat any help watch out in Game seven Tom Glavine excelled on the mound and at bat [Music] [Applause] dangled me Levin has faced the minimum through five rage my kid [Applause] here comes in am I surprised that New Yorkers are excited about the World Series being here no I'm not surprised about anything first of all it takes a lot to surprise in New Yorker the World Series being here is not a surprise you want to surprise me go finish fixing the Queensboro Bridge that'll surprise me for the first time in 15 years the Yankees were back in the World Series of course the world series belongs back in New York they've had a great year and they really come here to be where they are [Music] well to make the claim they're all here so I can feel the excitement I could leave all so excited right here ready ticket the Yankees won a lot of hearts in the summer of 96 with a micro cast that included rookie shortstop Derek Jeter and pitcher Andy Pettitte with 21 victories led the American League the bullpen was baseball's best just the way New Yorkers like it New York has got an attitude you know in the division series against Texas one man stole the show Manny ambi beat Bernie Williams turns to fall pretty well head is at McBride you got defense they make the tremendous leap attack and the Yankees are moving on to the NLCS where the Yankees had faith and fans on their side I just think it's been a long time coming and there's just nothing like Yankee fans I mean you know they're the best Tarasco going back to the track to the wall [Applause] Garcia says no [Applause] [Music] and my god bastard a team short Peter long drive how will series being here people wants you with in the world charity presenting the 1996 World Series featuring the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves in this Joe Torre's first-ever World Series appearance it was just like going on Joel was born and raised in Brooklyn little brother of Rocco and Frank all three men a fabled part of the Broadway parade ground Sandlot league here on Avenue T and Marine Park in the house Joe Torre was raised his sister Rhea still lives embracing the sweet irony that has brought her brother home if it happened with any other team I don't think it would be as rewarding to us as it is being a New Yorker and also as children we were nationally seeing and then what he was asked to be the manager reacted he thought was wonderful because they were so elitist and Holle up in our estimation they only won World Series they beat always been asking the league and now we're in it with the Yankees and that can be better for Torres family roots extend to a Catholic Grammar School in the neighbouring borough of Queens for Joe's other sister sister Marguerite imparts her students with the knowledge that I comes before E and the Yankees certainly come before the bridge yeah I pray as I do with the children that the Yankees believe in themselves that they get up knowing they can do it the challenge is there God is not swinging the back the believe in yourself is to me is the greatest thing that we can do for the children at school that the Yankees can add because once you feel good about yourself you know you can do what you do it but leaving nothing to chance sister Marguerite students have also come up with a good luck charm Vettori and the Yankees I love to use darling Joseph we love you God bless you and go Yankees go out and win love you every [Music] Victoria I hope you in the World Series is what I have to say bye-bye it's okay to instill another New York borough known as the Bronx a World Series game was about to be played and it was the talk of the town I have a look forward to a baseball series like this what are you how you feel this is a great tip well they got the two teams on st. Louis the bracelet also be a great a save [Music] let me empty some dead body I gotta wash my car tomorrow man that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me so far today bullpen all believe it was the first World Series game at Yankee Stadium since 1981 and the Yankees first 20 game winner since Ron Guidry had more than just a week's rest on his side he blessed my senior and I blessed and his head it's arm got into wonderful things tonight aah but he'd be facing mr. wonderful for the Atlanta Braves John Smoltz led the National League with 24 wins Smoltz is the proud owner of an 81 postseason record but in the first inning of this game a walk to Bernie Williams was followed by still another runner goes [Applause] well I definitely had too much juice early I mean I was pretty fired up to start and I got the first two guys out and I was starting to feel comfortable and then I started to overthink a little bit and overthrow and created a little problem for myself which I'm not very comfortable facing sussel fielder with runners HOD there's always the potential for something big with sessile fielder but his presence simply enhanced the challenge for smoke sometimes knowing what a guy's capable of doing it tend to get a little excited facing a guy and you want to get them out and fifty home runs just popped up in your mind and to write your name down there to get it off the end of the bat to end the inning Smoltz had survived the moment and the Yankee rally had been squashed not so the fans so these are the Capitals he's on our support the Cardinals were memory thanks in part to League Championship Series MVP Javier Lopez who came up in the second with one out one to added reaching up the middle base hit and that's the way the postseason has gone for Javy Lopez with Lopes on first Heather's got rookie right fielder Jermaine Dye on a fly ball for out number two manager Bobby Cox had benched Ryan Klesko this game in favor of curse all natives Andruw Jones who began the season with the Class A Durham Bulls and now his first World Series as that [Applause] long drive and a left field at the crack as the wall it is gone Andruw Jones his second postseason home run and it was good enough a praise in the second the edges had won the base now happy to hit a home run the work areas and happy to put their team in the lead have 19 years 5 months in 27 days Jones had eclipsed Mickey Mantle as the youngest man ever to hit a World Series home run one inning later the Braves threatened once again with nobody out both Jeff Blauser and Marquis Grissom single and mark Lemke advanced him the second and third with first base open the Yankees pitch to Chipper Jones who injustice second season already had seen his share of World Series happy days this guy's just dead center from the old school he wears his socks like the old-timer Chipper Jones kind of prides himself on being old-fashioned hall-small boy to the left-sided if this forest louder here comes Chris in the throat right strawberry not good and it's four to nothing Atlanta here in the third unfortunately for the fans the carnage continues hey [Music] a stolen base another hit and a walk to Lopez block Tory from the dugout and an end to Pettit's knife it was just location you miss your spot you're going to get hurt especially against you know ball club like the Braves so the thing you have to do if you're not an overpowering pitchers make sure you have your command and Andy didn't have his command the other night and he paid the price Brian bullring inherited a five to nothing deficit with two on and two out the man of the moment had his second World Series at-bat and 30 minutes older 30 minutes wiser than his historic first [Music] [Applause] incredibly Jones became the second player of any age to homer in his first two World Series and fast over a three-run homer and all of a sudden it ate nothing here in the third imagine Yankee Stadium the World Series nineteen years old that to back home runs Kershaw's national treasure could barely concealed his joy but there was no joy in the Bronx the color and in the fifth Fred McGriff made it clear to all who could hear that it was over three more runs in the 6th gave the Braves 12 for the night 44 in their last four games and by giving up just one run Smoltz raised his postseason record to 9 and 1 it was the worst loss by a Yankee team in 34 World Series 188 games it was a night when everything that could go wrong did go wrong a night to chalk up to the baseball demons and tried desperately to forget for this man surpassing Mickey Mantle on Manley's birthday no less was a night to press firmly in the scrapbook now gain to Beckham he'll be ok gonna bounce right back where it comes from behind well when you're going to a World Series game in the Bronx there's only one place to meet under the bed this is where we meet under the back everybody meets at the best so all I got to do is yell out and today yesterday cuz you know that's his name I'm waiting forever colleague and a guest from Germany I'm violet my son came from German it common coming from Arnhem I came from Brooklyn over the Triborough bridge believe me the pastry store in Brooklyn said X to the second just what timing you know I was travelling right religion well oh yeah oh yeah for Yankee fans the prospect of facing game two starter Greg Maddux was not one way relished with four straight Sion Awards to his credit Maddux had just completed his ninth straight season with 15 or more victories his opponents resume wasn't quite as impressive though Jimmy key was to an all in World Series play but here he quickly ran into trouble he hits one down the line and left it's a fair ball and extra bases it ends up bouncing into the seats interfered with so it doubled with one out for Lemke here the first inning on the Crick hit in the FATA spot Fred McGriff and Jimmy key were teammates in Toronto for more than four seasons you know me I know I'm I don't even quality picture I've seen him face other guys before I know from watching him on TV I worked the ball in and out and it is a great picture but a picture is only as good as the corners he keeps and early on some key calls weren't going Jimmy's way can catch the corner it's three long that was writing them up if Jimmy key doesn't get pitches like that for strikes it's going to be a long night for the Yankees the umpire was a national empire and he's not used to me he's trying to learn what I do and how my ball moves and stuff and that specific instance you know it was a it was a crucial pitch in that inning and I didn't get it like don't birth it over the ball but the count goes to 3 and 1 and now I'm telling myself try to get a good pitch to hit and didn't keep immune systems over to the left centerfield flight ticket rate but it falls in front scores and it's one to nothing the frustration quotient grew as the game wore with McGriff driving in three runs the Braves issued the long ball and instead knit and picked their way to afford a nothing leave it gone from thick ball the little ball in twenty four hours on the other side and to no one's surprise Maddox was masterful consistently drilling the first pitch for a strike he gets a great deal of satisfaction out of outbox and somebody he's got a lot of killer instinct in him and he just quietly goes about sticking it to you that's precisely what he does baffles hitters and infuriates fans look up you're open three-year-old before you get three ground ball to the shortstop and say you know how that happened thank you [Applause] all right I always stick the two the reasons why I'm good and one of those reason is because I catch in and you know regardless of where you're playing or move you're pitching against you have to excuse train my body I know buddy oh very well enjoying the show was Greg's father gay her dad who watched his Gold Glove winning Sun and juice five batters to hit the ball back to the mound my movement was pretty decent you know instead of getting hit hard I got some nice ground ball come on nobody out for weight ball [Applause] DoublePlay ball let's eat / - he was frustrating a lot of deaths because they would think in a way he was coming in it was like he was reading their mind it just doesn't seem fair that that Maddox you know has that kind of intuitive approach to pitching sometimes I think where'd this guy get all his talent I get they get born with it Maddox recorded just two outs in the air the whole game and of his 82 pitches he threw 62 strikes including 23 of the last 26 trailing four to nothing and would mark Wohlers on the mound the Yankees were down to their last straw you can put the hay in the barn under this game is over on the verge of their first World Series shutout since 1963 runner at second two out four to nothing Braves ninth inning and the one to Turell deal game over and Walter strikes out the side in the ninth inning and the brave ramp up Game two after a 12 to one win last night 800 you belongs to and Lavvy diabetics haunted of it so the series move back to the lam of cotton for thoughts of a long series that long since been forgotten but then out scoring your opponents 48 to 2 in the last 5 games is after all pretty heady stuff nobody do it like that laughter nobody do it like it level [Music] the Yankees out of here go back north of the mason-dixon goodbye last time you threw the judge over did well further much the change Atlanta was brimming with conference but the Yankees had a new bottle at the store Darryl Strawberry took over flip paulownia 1st baseman Tino Martinez gave way to the big man says field and a third base Wade Boggs was benched in favor of Charlie Hayes as the Yankees pulled out all the stops to avoid the port engine of a sweet there was another starter in the lineup who at one time no one expected to see on May 10 David Cone had surgery to remove an aneurysm in his right shoulder his stunning recovery not put him in the World Series I'd be lying if I said that wasn't a fantasy in the back of my mind realistically all I wanted to do is Quebec to contribute some way somehow to this team is going so well when I was out in the back of my mind that you know you always think maybe I could be the guy maybe I could you know be a guy that could be a turning point in the World Series or get a World Series start and have a big night now without a doubt that was in the back of our mind he'd be facing Tom Glavine who won the clinching Game six in the 1995 World Series by shutting down Cleveland one to nothing earning the series MVP this would be Glavine seventh World Series game yet from the start it was just a little shaky one out no score here is Bernie Williams oh four seven in the World Series it was the first time that I faced Glavine he inflicted to Brockton I knew that he was going to throw away and he was going to throw his changeup for the most part but he came to - fastball then and the second one was to strike it was too close to take [Music] [Applause] hankies fortress here in Game three it was very important because there further we haven't been scoring too many run in the first two games from series and it was very important to you know let them know that that we were still alive and we were we weren't intimidate but cone also had a rough beginning his first thing he began with a leadoff single by Marquis Grissom back in Game two and Lana used the sacrifice buck to perfection but here manager Bobby Cox chose to let mark Lemke the man they call little October swing away by are not going to field how did second job Oh we turn three six three she was jealous by this lady that got me over the hump a little bit I know we scored early in the top of the first which helped a lot and then Lemke hit the ball pretty hard if that ball gets down the line it might be a double second third nobody out and sessile makes a great pick up on essentials got a great hands at first you know he gets to it who catch it and that turned it quick and that really kind of settled me down and got me over the hump it also seemed to relax the Yanks for once they held the lead they also had a rally in the top of the court thanks to an error a walk and a deep fly ball club a its first and third one out for Darryl Strawberry left side base hit in this forest Williams and it's 2 to nothing Yankees here in the fourth will he go home scholar Edie and his brother Chris knew how much David would like to help his cause he loved his stuff not he got his chance with two out all right Cody that's what they got him for they got him for his batter and now it's bases-loaded two-out for cone this close to breaking loose here scoring a bunch of runs this close to the left side we play like Chipper Jones the Atlanta defense healthy Yankees lead to two to none in the fifth with Tim Raines on first and one out the defense came up big once again [Applause] in the right well-hit now [Applause] the Braves weren't giving an inch but then neither was David Cone a big-game pitcher who was pitching the game of his life trying desperately to keep the Yankees World Series hopes alive wasn't over tonight you've got some big stuff come on Johnny putting away [Applause] that is yeah yeah pony Paul shut the braise out until the sixth inning when his counterpart Tom Glavine led off with a most patient at that again a David a buddy three Souter Glavine I'll lead off yeah it's a little bit of a blow when you watch the pitcher to leave up in inning now when you walk anybody much less pitcher and Glavine too tough hitter you almost pitch him like a regular hitter and that was our scouting report going in but like I said this might come back to haunt me and I know it's got to work hard to go down there six days into left field off the end of the bat reigns can't make the catch in the first drawn for the Braves of the six and now the question is do you fight one would certainly think so in the air field or one out quickie got it here for free guys we got there how you got a double play about it instead cone created more problems when he walked Chipper Jones to load them up story tho thorry wants to have a word would smell it what the good well he got about as close as he could get almost knows the nose and it sort of implored native to be honest with if you understand the significance of the game we know what the situation is how do you feel tell me the truth he never had the kid you know there was no hesitation I probably would have read something into that I told myself all right I got us in this Jam I'll get us out and then once he said you know I get this guy I'll get out of this and you know to me David Cohen if you have 70 75 % of David Cone it may be better than a hundred percent of somebody else because he's been down that road before McGriff popped up to short centerfield and the runners had to hold now we got two but now corn faced Klesko you could clear the bases with one swing Rock County boys came over pretty good last time true but this time cone fell behind and he's pull with Ryan Klesko at the plate David Cone believe that was ball ball for klesko's walk cut the lead to two to one but the Yankees maintained that narrow margin when corn got Lopez to pop up it was the end of David's night and his father couldn't have been more pleased a lot of pressure on him kind of a must-win situation and I was very careful good very good very proud of him with great McMichael on for Atlanta in the 8th the Yankee States to rally and to no one's surprise it began with Derek Jeter Bernie Williams gets to turn around at bat left-handed for the first time tonight I was trying to know make them feels like baby no it was going to be a bunt play and I was just trying to look at the infield the people were they playing but in my mind I knew I was putting the best [Music] [Applause] do you hear me thinking no it was great great we got our champion duck who were able to take advantage of it and just a great feeling you know it's very difficult you know to play in a place that you haven't played for especially with this crowd but it's very gratifying to be successful the Yankees added still another run in the top of the eighth but in the bottom the unfathomable took place Mariano Rivera actually ran into trouble and what was his second inning of work Rivera surrendered a leadoff triple to Marquis Grissom next the parentally pesky mark Lemke [Applause] [Music] after striking out Chipper Jones Rivera departed in favor of the man from Down Under Australian Graham Lord who felt calmer and this is second straight game you've got heaps of adrenaline flowing through it's just it's just amazing that the feeling you do have when you're coming into a World Series game and the first night I got up I was thinking about Australia they need to have the folks back home and wonder how many people are watching but last night on two straight in there and thinking about where I'm going to pitch the Garifuna question [Music] [Applause] Lord what a great job by Graham boy rally caps notwithstanding both McGriff and Klesko had been set down under another remarkable job by the New York bullpen now leading five to two the Yankees turned to John Wetteland with hopes of giving Tori the first World Series win of his 32 year career Yankees tried to wrap up game three they lead 5-2 9th inning one on two-out [Music] to the right side so game 3 belongs to the Yankees had made a dent a remarkable inspiring World Series victory for David Cone the first of his career from a cold operating table in may to the warmth of a black it was a medical miracle that brought Cohn to this game a miracle he now shared with those he loves the most [Music] my parents are the first ones I saw when I woke up after her ever the operation for the aneurysm to come this far and to see the look on their faces after that game and my dad sort of a straight-up guy you know handshake you know pat on the back and kind of got him over our game a big hug you know it's kind of rare at our family and not a lot of emotion shield like that but there was definitely an outpouring of emotion that night meanwhile the emotions of Yankee fans had undergone a renaissance from utter despair the voices back home now offered a glimmer of hope for many the Yankees aware they should be I give him a lot of credit last night I was a nice job that could've easily gotten swept but they outplayed the brand simple is that I give him a lot of credit now all of a sudden its fight no I don't have to hear anything more from you or any brave man around the country about how this is embarrassing they're not on the same level here my baby cannot get down and play base day the Braves called on Denny Neagle in Game four well the Yankees countered with the beleaguered Kenny Rogers who had struggled in the past few weeks after a one two three first inning tory's number four starter became his number one concern as the Braves came to bat in the second revolt in a strike on the grip [Applause] Kenny's troubles were far from over with runners on first and third after two walks in a flyball Cox called for a little pressure with the bat steady Jeff Blauser at the plate sweet boy it was nobody Nagel moved the runners to second and third and with the chance to give Atlanta a four-run lead Marquis Grissom [Applause] there it is as far as job it's a foreign clauser now the second prizm for the No Yankee fans watched their deficit go to five and by the third inning Rodgers day was done meanwhile nego continued to cruise [Applause] five innings Nagel was superb and the Braves were smelling blood the Yankees had gone deep in their bullpen by the bottom of the fifth when Atlanta put two runners on with two out for Andruw Jones runners will go to three to pinch to third he can't make the play here comes chipper job [Applause] Yankee fans had hit bottom six zip against the world champs this dance history we don't need a chance know what a sentiment that the Yankees team didn't quite agree we've pretty much been coming back all year I mean we've had plenty of comfort line wins in the playoffs but anytime you playing in like the Brady's you'd like to come out he knows how to get a lead we're down to six Rodman and I still felt that we had a chance to win if we you know got to NATO and we got their books and I fell another cheater Speights received a boost and he led off the sixth with a Powell ball that had destined written all over [Music] I think he was more concerned with staying out of the way mark Lemke didn't realize that you're made I was coming in right behind him well the reason wasn't caught because the umpire froze like a statue out there and dying makes that catch easy I don't know you know it's a three-man conversion you got a second baseman coming out of first baseman and obviously there's a right builder playing somewhere and it cost us it out he catches the ball routinely young-chan high and I like to believe in my own mind that they don't score that I had sort of a second life I just had to get our anyway possible actually mitigate this and I just bought it off and then loop it in the right day Jeter's brushed with Providence did not sit too well with cops following a walk to Bernie Williams the Yankees had two men armed no one out an array of Hope with Cecily get in here okay big guys up five now the two ball two strike count and Fielder has the advantage these are here comes Jeter Hill School and they bring him around they and it's a pool party here still no one out and settle on second for Charlie Hayes center field and shoot the gap and the forest painter on at first it's a 6-3 game Terrel Wade relieved Nagle and watt strawberry on Cain Mike Bielecki with a fastball and a prayer he has two on nobody out by like he gets him for the first out here in the sixth [Applause] once again both had turned to despair by Lucky's amazing performance had seemingly put Atlanta back in control [Music] with a three-run lead the Braves made an early call to mark Wohlers create but the Yankees were on a most auspicious role Charlie Hayes leads an office swinging bunt that will roll and stay fair unbelievable a leadoff base hit and Hayes is on to start the engine to the left side and throw a base hit for strawberry rollers has picked up six straight seasons day now the confidence of Braves fans began to win baby [Music] [Applause] go figure shortstop rafael belliard had come in for defensive purposes but was handcuffed by what appeared to be a certain DoublePlay ball and it's first in third one for the catcher Jim Leyritz his first at-bat of the night big swing he was right on it [Applause] and on lyrics I think blowers is going to the breaking ball tuba you get Pete you want to get beat on your best pitch not your third best pitch this situation right here this is the game situations almost like Bobby Cox is shaking his head I believe that no matter what you call if it's in the right location he's going to get the hitter out so even though he's a fastball pitcher Marge it's a tremendous amount of strikeouts on his foot staying and a slice another good swing - and - and upset 99 miles per hour from Walters for their freedom even under five and a 2 2 pitch Jamaica lyrics [Applause] the slider on the jujube I'm a dead fastball hitter and when in doubt don't throw me a fastball whether 200 whether it's 98 or anything like that I think I can says he makes his pitch there if he makes a good good sliding across slider right there he probably good but as far as Mike's my thinking I was saying okay he's gonna come back except cat does not 2 miles an hour I'm gonna look fastball to get the chip tutelary in the air to left field back at the track it's a long way [Applause] Dec 16 and was a slider and the deployment another slider football what a remarkable comeback by the yang I was not thinking Homer I'm thinking okay dirty get a ball know the middle of Beverly field diving at least one run and get a phone of course late for me and you hung the slider I kept my hands back and by looking fast walks better I bet I hid another location to see a baby generals Marrakech when I saw him go up I thought the ball just barely matter and watch the reefer medical hits the back wall we've got a pretty good but until I hit those base I wasn't home for necessarily tied at six the game entered the 90 there with two men out the Yankees threatened once again fielder's single to right off Wohlers and move to third on Hayes head to left two men armed two men out and Darrell caught a break the last time trouble at the base [Music] so now with the bases loaded Mariano Duncan gave Braves fans a moment well to die for [Music] [Applause] the Braves struck back in their half of the night with a Lemke head and a one-out walk to Chipper Jones Rivera had tired and with runners on first and second he gave way to the resurgent Graham Lloyd who in the game prior with a runner on base at handle Fred McGriff I come in there thinking well you know pitched him away and I've had pretty good success last couple of nights and I'm going to mix up my pitches but I'll stay away from me [Applause] in right a game that had officially become a classic now moved into the temp where for the first time in a series the Braves called on Steve Avery he got two quick outs then walked Tim Raines on four pitches Jeter followed with a seeing-eye singled and the Yankees had runners on first and second with two out and Bernie Williams slated to bat right-handed Bobby Cox made his move Bernie Williams is the one guy that our scouts and everybody in the baseball world if you can pitch around him do it don't let him beat you they will intentionally walk Bernie Williams and with two-out the bases will be loaded and the last bullet for Jill Torre on his bench [Applause] we'll take a couple of trying that's the kind of guy here's [Applause] to June June Oh count am i right [Applause] 3 2 pitch the Yankees take the lead [Applause] incredibly the Yankees had come back from six runs down to take a seven to six lead they extended it to 8:00 to 6:00 when Klesko lost Charlie Hayes soft flair to first in the lights loyd did his job in the bottom of the tenth when he fan Klesko Atlanta fans were resigned to acknowledge that the New York bullpen was out pitching theirs but with wetland now in the game that 19 year old Boy Wonder got his third hit of the night or it made a lot [Music] [Applause] [Music] Jermaine Dye runner goes this guy it range is [Music] behind a left-handed batter [Music] [Applause] [Music] and it did innings the Yankees hang on and win eight six and this series is tied at two games apiece in 4 hours and 17 minutes the longest World Series game ever the Yankees became just the third team in the history of baseball ever to win a postseason game in which it trailed by six runs tremendous comeback guys never gave up everyone contributed Jimmy Labor's a huge three-run homer offer you know a great stopper mark Wohlers you know great game tonight's ballgame and everything that happened up to the eighth inning shouldn't happen in all sized ball game is you know should be put on my shoulders I lost I blew it you know I got a job to do you paid a hell of a lot of money to go out there and shut him down when Bobby hands being bought I just didn't do it but can we just forget about as quick as possible because you got to come right back I'll hear them off farewell from County Savior this is the last page that you'll see the stadium live in action as Atlanta closed the stadium the talk before Game five was still of the Jim Leyritz home run one of the most important home runs in Yankee history and how it promised a trip back north [Music] bag drunk you gotta go go we're going to the bronze ooh rather they know me fired up in the roof I think that would be advantage for us to go home you know real to because you know started as that plays gonna be rocking I think it'd be to our advantage with the home thing you know I would definitely love to go home three to us but of course John smokes stood in the way and the game one winner seemed even more focused than usual for the first three innings Smoltz struck out six they were safe to say that in Atlanta confidence was high [Applause] but matching him pitch for pitch and declivity so ineffective in Game one when he gave up seven runs he took a different approach in Misco one number proved to be far and away that I hadn't pitched like that the entire year either this year I pitched inside fastballs cutters inside and that was pretty much it I had success all year with it so as I stayed with it and then all of a sudden I go out there in Game five I got good fastball away and that's all we threw I mean if I threw 70 fast balls away I 100 pitches every so it was just real weird to go out there and be able to throw a completely different game and I pitched all year me 18 budged an inch until the fourth inning when the Yankees got a break from a place they'd least expected they sitting 250 in the World Series Hey and up at second base the Marquis Grissom the good guy view of the [Music] Grissom's error puts Bernie Williams in a sacrificial state of month and with just one out the Yankees had a runner on third the first man to reach third for either team very good very good ok just like that with only one out smoke because you've been exploring oh yeah Robert third one out no score for good this has got to be a patient at that processo fielder remember he is vulnerable to the high fastball fielder down the left-field line it's fair up against the wall and his for his age down to second his fielder he's in with a double and [Music] with a fragile one to nothing lead headed carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning but in the sixth he ran into trouble courtesy of a leadoff single by Smoltz and another by Grissom he's expected but never give us a lot [Applause] [Music] amazing parading creditably 24 years old in his second World Series game we talked about obviously if I look like an idiot probably from if he's be safe and I just went for it I really came to tell you I didn't think about anything if I thought about it I'm probably been changed [Applause] then so quickly it was over now Jones back to penat you want more boys one for three inning over and a Yankees hold on to the after six walked it up in it was the kind of battle siyoung would have loved smokes would leave in the 8th after striking out 10 and allowing four hits and one unearned run he'd later call it the best game he ever pitched after 31 years of baseball at Fulton County Stadium the finale was living up to its villain and when the Yankee sought insurance in the ninth with runners on first and third two-out and rollers on the mound they've also witnessed its share of surprise for the batter was Petitte I had my head down I hear somebody screaming at me and them her he's over there young get a hit you know get a hit like that so and I realized it has been deflating this this guy you know he's going 100 miles an hour I like you kid we got thought I think it pinch-hit for here's what Joe Torre thinks of Chipper Jones in Fred McGriff who will bat in the bottom of this ninth inning he'll stick with the left-hander Andy Pettitte not the hit but the pitch I was going on here Joe Torre what's going on runners at the corner - up rennet pop wanted 11 VZ for Andruw Jones and we handed to the by Omaha tonight Tori's gamble took an ominous turn for credit when the brains open their half of the inning with a hit [Music] Jones gimme four seconds he [Music] to the right side the rudder advances to third and Martinez will take in its own one [Applause] and here comes Joe Torre it wasn't quite wood Torian hopeful but as planned he went to weapon headed had been all but perfect five hits no runs the bad taste of his game one performance now a distant memory the Braves rally hopes now turn to Lopez right at Hayes John called the third pillar wetland now walked the potential winning run and set up a classic confrontation when Jermaine Dye was called back in favor of Luis Polonia tying run on third winning run on first [Music] [Applause] right one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Bianca [Music] do it again Oh [Applause] - what [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] cloudy Yankees win one day nothing as wetland saves it for Andy Pettitte we could have imagined that the engines after losing the first two games of the series would sweep the defending champions in their own backyard beat them in their stadiums final game [Music] [Applause] any girl Oh [Music] in its first World Series win and wetlands third straight save made the Yankees a perfect eight parade on the road in the 96 postseason but only John knows how close he can [Music] I didn't let it go he's kind of cooking it in there you know [Music] as the team's return to New York the miracles continue two miles from the stadium at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center Joe Torre's brother Frank awaited a heart transplant Joey lost his brother Rocco to a heart attack in June now for more than two months Frank lay waiting for a new heart on the eve of Game six he got that heart donated quite appropriately by a man from the Bronx you go from you know no party life and probably death to all of a sudden you know having a young man's heart you know and I'm being sold by doctors that I have supreme confidence that I'll never feel you know I won't ever feel as good as I do now for quite a long time so that's that's the ultimate I mean that was my world suit it almost seemed to life as though supernatural forces were guiding the Yankees through this World Series and when two priests from Notre Dame threw out the first pitch fans had the sense that this was their not an Athena that wants to del destino buddy Ankara win this thing or what York you gotta believe baby the number one place in the world born again baseball fans had a newfound faith three straight wins will do that too now the Yankees needed just one more victory for their first title in eighteen years they asked Jimmy key for five solid innings and he got off to a promising start thanks to his slick fielding left field go Jimmy let's go let's go Jimmy connects tonight bringing it home tonight doll shot into left field for strawberry if you ever think you'd be talking about Darryl Strawberry defense in the World Series [Applause] okay for the Braves Greg Maddox who baffled the Yankees in Game two his credentials were impeccable but so what we want fourth IOC exactly what he has is what the hitters refer to as late getting guys out after breezing through the first two innings Maddox encountered a hobbling Paul O'Neill in the third who threw a little salt in that recipe for life [Applause] and bring it on up to this point it hadn't been the best of world series for Mariano Duncan but now he faced his most important asset when I work on it all right sizes down to the right the Yankees now metered a fly ball and Maddox is former catcher delivered [Applause] Oh O'Neil your audience doesn't display [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so the Yankees have done in two and a third innings what they couldn't do any against Greg Maddux in Game two and that is dent home plate now the runner at third one out for Jeter [Applause] [Music] our whole city is shaking a most on Maddox like 13 after Jeter stole second New York's new centerfield hero sought to ride the Yankee Clippers coattails [Applause] yes laughter New York the Williams died at second the Braves best pitcher had been outfoxed I like it in the top of the fourth he ran into some tough luck of his own when he walked Fred McGriff with one out Lopez singled to right moving McGriff to second and Andruw Jones then loaded the bases was still another hit to right 3-1 pitch of course over wrong suddenly he was missing battle and the Braves dugout was stirring that makes it a two-run game and the base is still loaded one out for the number 8 hitter Terry Pendleton if Kelly attend will : call you again key fell behind 3 & 1 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the fifth another Braves rally was snuffed when Girardi sought to gun down Grissom at second base the umpire called Grissom out sparking a tirade from cops before the dialogue was over Cox became the sixth manager to be ejected from a World Series game the first since Whitey Herzog in 1985 still 3 to 1 in the 6th Tori turned to his bullpen after Chipper Jones double to leadoff and the grip grounded out moving Jones to 3rd coming into [Music] very practical Oh [Music] spike out at a walk from whether is its first and third two out here comes Tory as Klesko is announced as the pinch-hitter and now we see Graham boy a tra of zero five and expense [Applause] the corners two hours this series is old for prey against [Applause] [Music] the Yankees hold the fort relievers had done their job now in the seventh the magnificent Mariano Rivera came on to get his fait accompli six outs [Applause] we're in the eighth inning Rivera trying to get it to the ninth inning in John wetland Vincent Rivera two innings no hits no runs no sweat if this was a team of divine destiny it was time for the savior John wetland takes over he has five saves in the postseason three of the World Series and the Yankees are three outs away from their first World Championship since 1978 let's go Jackie let's go Jackie Andruw Jones yes and now Klesko the middle off the glove of Jeter and when going on [Applause] [Music] one on one out for Terry Pendleton this a long way from over hard ass is always up in the right field enter hit let's go we'll stop now he'll head to third row [Music] down the middle strike one first and third one out tying locks on for the Braves strike to Westland speaking to the defense now he'll continue to throw one fastball after another Torre and the Yankees are now one out of way its wetland and Grissom to the right side and through a base hit if the score is Klesko and now one more hit could call the Braves back even three singles in the inning and it's a one-run game now its first and second two out four lucky career 300 hitter in World Series play runners going Lemke pops it foul the dugout and just out of the reach of Charlie hey [Music] another chance - left side hey wait the Yankees are champions of baseball [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] they were a team unlikeable team may be in fact a team of destiny each player and coach with his own tale to tell they were out hit out homered and not scored but because they were a team they won and when they took that spontaneous lap around the house that Ruth Built even the most hardened Yankee flow had to crack a little imagine 23 world championships no team in any sport as more how the fans never gave up on the New York team the comeback team team of a lot of heart in the New York tell love listing there's no better place to win in New York like exploded around the field it was an incredible future [Music] planning it was over and the guys took a lap around the field each one of them with her own story knowing that the first time I came here Thank You six love affair wouldn't be very emotional to see the players wanting to wait for abundance and thank 15 represents all York because they don't quit without fences with this team more than any I've seen example my sister [Music] [Music] [Music] yes hiya what happened again that I have cancer Nicky maybe mom Nikki baby ah to do it caming orchid case they have no veterinary have it so I got a little cocktail for you but very special to him I mean had a long time getting the gist theories a lot of ballgames and again you know with his brother getting a new heart and then he'll emotional high so put in the clothes out first and in this way be able to be world champions are no filibuster I hope it lasts forever I know it's it's so satisfying right now to be sitting here and and exhausting that you're right it does last forever register lasts forever you're right because now you can talk about you know I let the players celebrate on the other ones but this one had to be for the fans right in the middle of the field and it was so touching for me that you know they they all you know we're as warm as they were the night and so on a late October morning the world witness perhaps the greatest sports spectacle of all time more than three million people lined the streets of New York to honor their Yankees to celebrate this wonderful game of baseball everything in my life right now be in front of the beautiful people look at so first of all guys this is incredible I worst guest subscribing it's something you see on TV and until you experience it it's the greatest thing in the world Memphis incredible this fan has been behind us all year and I can't explain it right here it's unbelievable I mean I can't describe the people are crazy I'm so proud of this I'm joined every second of it we want to be a part of it you always people being a part of it and I'm here like I can't believe it and head on your door no no no I don't have to go that I'd do it again it's happened before it will happen again but in 1996 the Fall Classic truly lived up to its name [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm so proud to be a Yankee but most of all I'm so proud you fans because you talk about the greatest spectacle in sports history getting hit parade was the greatest sports spectacle ever in the history of Lord thank you now as wondering why it took so long we need to get to a World Series twenty two hundred plus games thirty plus years well I guess the good Lord was waiting me to put on the pinstripes thank you very much mayor Giuliani Jo and I would like to present to you and the people of New York this trophy for City Hall [Applause] [Music] how many more miracles it was time to find out as the Fall Classic returned to the Bronx after a 15-year drought since the dream comes true just to get the plane named cinnamon into it in the World Series I mean it just seems like the world very the Yankees go together so they've been been there so many times so it's a great great thrill to face cuz he is the so-called team of the 90s got down to business he's alive field will hit strawberry back at the wall for Andruw Jones smokes then Maddux out scored 16 to 1 the Yankees look dazed down two games to none they headed to the home of the Tomahawk Chop Joe Torre telling me after we lost the first one that we weren't focused and he didn't think we did win the second game here but then he looked at me he says we're going to go down there and sweep them in Atlanta and come back here and win on Saturday and I felt like saying Oh Jason's are we in trouble road warriors all year the Yankees now prayed for one more gift of Road magic scoring the first run in the fourth inning over there down in Atlanta it really made me think baby maybe they're not a computable update they might paint up the middle of base yet rain comes in to score the Yankees score first Joe Torre and the Yankees put him witness script any better than that bases-loaded two-out to the right job Gerardi is there a takeover David Cole gets through the frame as Girardi makes the catch at the suta one game hung on and drilled the deep right better high get his paw God is gone into the right-field seats a two-run home run for Bernie Williams a 5-2 win the Yankees had last had a foot in the door but in Game four the bomber turnaround was terribly fleeting looking up at a six nothing deficit the Yankees dug deeper they clawed back to six to three then in the eighth inning Bobby Cox mint mark Wohlers in to base Jim Larry it'll be a 2-2 swung on and in the air to deep left goes back for the track at the wall it is gone a three-run home run and the goody-goody Yankees have come all the way back six coming down to tie the game at six [Applause] by comparison Game five was simple a nerve-racking pitcher's duel between smokes and pettite I told the guys in my mind I said hey listen just give me some body out there today I feel good I want to give them just do it still searching [Applause] and the Yankees Oh [Music] [Applause] for Andy Pettitte an unsinkable three-game sweep in Atlanta and the Yankees were going home Game six Yankees Stadium in near delirium and Greg Maddux facing a clyde even he could not stop swung on and driven to center field deep and trying to get the run it might be more gruesome back still back picked overhead head up against the wall O'Neill for two Rodney Rowe seconds he'll go to third the flow it's late he sighed crippled Yankees lead one nothing when I got the third base there was almost a pair of my eyes it actually was because I hadn't had a hit to him real good for me that was just a wonderful experience and I wanted to cherish it and that's a base hit it a lot failed Girardi scores do nothing Yankees got in the dugout still had that fear in my eye and we were head screwed enough and I knew if we could get three six we had the mone wet show and my dreams of outlays I found myself doing things out of the north seeing the guys and my dog out I never was and notice them but I heard the roar of though you know the crowd a little bit more I know this looks on my teammates faces I even saw the Atlantic that I never ever look around but there was something in me that was saying that grab this moment I try to take in some thing [Applause] it was done each one on the file had contributed in some way but to a kid from Brooklyn among them one contribute can remain to be exotic I can't tell you the plans what they meant to to what we were doing we turned the city of New York into a small town and I've been to some small town with with the problems I have had personally this year of my one brother Rocco passing away and Frank you know with the heart transplant and the fact that I gone 100 to 10 years without getting into a horse series I think everybody this world series became human you know I think so much is made of how much money people make and numbers that you put up at this world series if it was it was nice human and I feel sure I feel the warmth I think a lot of is the fact that I was going to raise from New York and the first New Yorker that ever you know one of world championships but with the Yankees which only all these things mean alike to me now while we were going through this thing I was hoping I get to the World Series but it's unbelievable with the number of people that we had and what they meant to our success this year and then for us to be able to win a World Championship in the city of New York for the fans of New York and I don't think we could have it happen it is the beauty of Yankee Stadium that as it happened for Allie Reynolds and for Don Larsen and for whitey Ford it happened for John wetland who said he was never more emotionally confused than at that moment so totally jubilant he had so much in pain to be at the bottom of that pile was this the most dramatic of the 23 Yankee World Championships impossible to tell but we do know this no Yankee team was so close to apparently losing only to win than this one which is why most of us believe 1996 was the year of pinstriped destiny when Game six was over it was a huge celebration for 57,000 fans and 25 pretty tired players but what happened next was a celebration of an entire city [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] quite happened like this in Cincinnati did it we ain't got just many people in Cincinnati is unbelievable it showed with the city what baseball means this city and you believe how many people you guys have made happy I can't I really can't it's unbelievable Phyllis what's the one image that sticks in your mind so far Judas had a Python faith was about 10 feet saw a large rhino is lost New York is different and joint Celebi now will they love you man well I just think it's great it's great to you know be back in New York and win another championship I just think everybody you really appreciate what the Jenkins accomplished this year this is going to be a lot bigger than then right yeah it's a lot bigger now this is a big thrill because the Jenkins hadn't waters a long time to lobby Yankee fans out there think of it it's amazing it's amazing I got no worse than Struthers I mean the greatest experiences of my life [Applause] Oh [Applause] [Applause] ah
