coming to what he be 7 1 he said batting second and playing third base number nine but a third playing center field number five one damn body fourth and right field number twenty three David Justice body the first baseman number. Wow. Sen. Reid bombing 6 has left me on no point. Brian Hunter bombing setup a captured number 10. Greg Olsen. Body 8. Playing at second base number 20 mark lefty body 9. That truck stop. Number two. Wrapping up in the air and in the ball pit starting pitcher number twenty nine John Smoltz won American League champion Minnesota twang started and now the manager at Number 10 Tom Tilley leading off in left field number thirty two Dan Glavin batting second the second baseman Chad running third in centerfield number thirty par but a fifth the designated hitter number 40 points lead David batting sex the catcher number 12 Brian Harper body set up playing and left field number twenty four Shane Mark putting it at third base number 13 Mike a Romo but a ninth shortstop number seven Greg Gaffney and in the bullpen warming up for the twins number forty seven Jack Morris states three color guard protects our different colors and now to honor America please join seven year old Jacqueline Watkins from New Hope Minnesota has seen lately in our national anthem you see Julie and like star that you did we what were you doing when you were seven years old. That was terrific Jack Buck and Tim McCarver well they're getting ready at the Metrodome and get used to this scene because you'll no doubt depending on the twins do it all night long. You know there is no game in baseball more important in Game 7 of the World Series and no one knows that more than Jack Buck who has called so many of them and Tim McCarver who batted folks three hundred as his cardinal teams won two on a three game sevens. I think he stole a base in one of those games. Gentlemen have a good game. Let the goose bumps begin. Mr. Buck. Yeah. Thank you. Pat is going to be terrific. I just hope that all seven year old girl who sang the anthem doesn't do play by play it wouldn't seem terrific. I'm telling you he was terrific. Folks we've been wrong. We kept saying this series can't get any better. We got better Jack so many vivid memories of the first six games that we thought it appropriate to show some of the scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind. Game one Jack Mark gallant warrior returning home. Hats off game. When push comes to shove a bad turn for Atlanta game three Rick Aguilera the pinch hitter later. Game three a force emerges in Mark Lemke driving home the winner game for the violent collision of Smith and Harper to win the game for an arms length and elbows with the subtle difference between LB and safe game 5. It was David Justice putting Atlanta on top and last night Puckett charge ignites the twin and Homer hankies were aptly named. Last night Jack and we just know that something will happen tonight to take its place with those pictures you just saw. We're close to game time. Let's join Jim Carr. All right. Thank you Jack. Perfect pitching matchup. Can you believe this Jack Morris and John Smoltz. Jack Morris with John Smoltz boyhood idol Minnesota signed him to pitch big games like this. Atlanta traded for Smoltz to do the same. They'll have a big influence on who wins this game. Game the warm ups are over with the Poms are a little sweaty they're going over their little check points few hours we're going to celebrate. See which team wins. These guys have been thinking a lot of fuss since they warmed up Backyard games. Boyhood dreams of pitching Game 7 when it's all over and the champagne has kind of dried off. There's one thing they're playing for and that's this ring more than anything else a ballplayer wants that Morris and Smoltz going to have a big influence on who wears it after this was over era the twins on the field with Jack Morris taking his warmups. He certainly has had more experience than John Smoltz but the two of them are just excellent hurler as both at a very very strong position with regard to the seasons they've been pitching very well Smith will be first up he'll likely died and gone to seven that's what we've done well that's exciting for everyone involved suburb of St. Paul Morris ball. Smith has had three hits and they have been. He's had four hits and three of them have been home run I don't think I've ever seen a hit or shake hands with a catcher before the first pitch in any game. Like a heavyweight fight. Jack Ma is the pitcher Brian Harper the catcher. Playable in the right field. Say Mac is there. Absolutely. This one's here are the umpires Don banking Jr. will work the plate. Everyone knows that roll call both Terry Tate. Rick Reed. And Ed Montague. This is the crew chief Don Duncan who will be scrutinized here this evening. Everything that occurs on this playing field is under quite a microscope. Hamilton has been hot with the bat. He's had 10 hits in the series. He humid air last night his second home run of the series carry six for his last seven. He won the batting title this year the first Atlanta Braves to win a National League batting title since Ralph Gard did it in 1974. How to play around Star by the way is still with the Braves organization. He was one of my favorites when he was there. What a nice fellow. One ball one strike easy for her back to her chilly evening clear night out of doors Gans stands between Jack Morris and a perfect first standing garden with no home runs in the series. He has eight hits skipper of the Atlanta Braves Bobby Cox they go home after the game tonight Tom Kelly is the skipper of the twins he won it all in eighty seven add to win game seven here against the Cardinals to accomplish that evolve and a straight out of Brian mentioned in the early going Morris won two games against Toronto he was a winner in Game 1 of this series then no decision in game four so he's pitching in game 1 4 and 7 he can't be any more of a number one guy. He started the first game of the season for the twins. He pitched in the All-Star Game. He pitched the first game of the American League Championship Series and he pitched the first game of the world series. He won all four of those games. Braves went down and order no score in the first. Each team has one in their home games. Minnesota won the first two here in the Metrodome. And the series traveled to Georgia and Atlanta won all three in back it took a day off and last night's exciting win went to the twins John Smalls a 14 game winner during the season but eight and one after their all star game and he won two games against Pittsburgh and flooding the clincher. No decision in one World Series start he has won all three of his postseason start and he won his last eight starts in the regular season and Puckett they took the roof off this place just about when they entered his pocket in the freezing Greg Olsen has caught each game of this series and there was a strong performer down the stretch for the Braves to untenable sliders or two strikes to Dan glad those sweeping sliders from Smoltz had a remarkable sports season up here in the Minneapolis area. Now game seven of the series with a lusty and small says off on the right foot with a striker there had been five previous series in which the home team won each of the first six games but in only one of those five series did the home win game seven and that was the last World Series here in Minnesota won by the twins against the Cardinals. Game 7 in the Metrodome here adding as Chuck and not mark a rookie second baseman had a uniform and 88 for a popped him up for an apparent second who wanted somebody better gadget. Here's a second out with justice. Making the catch. It looked like he was gonna go to it and it came up as a momentary pause there were run in World Series history. Dusty Rhodes had one at a Matthews. Carlton Fisk Puckett. Dusty Rhodes against Bob Lemon back in 1954 when the Giants swept the Indians. Eddie Matthews of Milwaukee in the 1957 series off Bob Grimm. And then everybody knows about Carlton Fisk home run against Cincinnati in game six of seventy five no score. Top of the second Timmy you referred to that unbeatable slider by John Smoltz. When you're all pumped up in a game like this you get a little more fastball behind that slider a little more velocity a little less break. And I think that's what the twins hitters saw a lot of in the bottom of that first inning. He threw some nasty pitches indeed. Oh it's Maurice pitching to David Justice hit it hard but right at Puckett. And it plays in front of him for first base head of game 7. And to play deep with Justice up there and David gets his seventh hit of the series. We've talked about Kirby Puckett. If he has an Achilles heel it is playing a little bit too deep. And I think he gets in the habit of doing that here at the Metrodome to try to cut down on Gap base hits that ball normally is cut but because Puckett was so deep it falls in front for just as it kind of makes up for the ball and just missed being a homerun last year. And these Braves did hit into some tough luck here said Brian no runs batted in in the series and ball one to him Tommy. Tommy Lasorda referred to Jack Morris and how the hitters of the Atlanta Braves should either try to get ahead of Morris or hit early in the count by doing that you don't allow him to throw that split finger fastball he usually throws it when he's ahead in the count throw he throws that fastball over for a strike you want to put that ball in play instead of trying to hit the splitter he throws that about as hard as he does his fastball and Harper gets some help from the dugout. Justice is a threat to run and that ball is out of play. Justice is not the fastest of runners. But he did steal a base during the season Jimmy Williams a third base coach here was Justice's steal of second base before the Mark Lemke hit in game three not allowed Atlanta to win their first postseason game ever two balls and a strike. Herbert holding against the run combination of Jack Morris and Brian Harper a good combination on which to run 15 wild pitches led the American League and Jack Morris had no pickups on the season almost had won their was a shorter lead Derrick Rose and the runner will advance and block couldn't get it out of the glove I think Dave just as pulling in Edwin Moses he looked like a high hurdler going over that ball and I think that upset the rhythm of Chuck Knoblauch watch Justice hurdle this ground ball and not block I think caught it a little in the heel of the glove couldn't get it out cleanly and had to go to first base form by Justice and good for Atlanta. Runner or with green running now would have been a double play under the ball on Bryant three out of 17 and that's just foul but that's the way it went all last night for Atlanta wouldn't happen. Well he hit that ball off the end of the bat but Atlanta did hit an awful lot of balls hard last night either at twins players or just foul. You mentioned that David Justice foul ball. That was really crush. About a foot foul and then Terry penalty his second goodbye justice an all out Hunter and then Olson will have a crack at putting the Braves on top in the second. And some folks have made the trip up from Georgia to root for their club and had a winner since the Braves move. The last Braves team to win was the 57 group that's Eddie Matthews Hank Aaron Joe and Doc Frank Tory Dale Randall red Shane Burdette Buell. Nobody had won three games in that series and it was Looper dad who lost that decisive game in 1958 to the Yankees. The Yankees trailed three games to one and then they came back to win the last three games against Milwaukee. When the Braves were in North to intuitive the batter Morris just blows this high fastball right by Brian Hunter C. Hunter under it. That's the second out of the ending and it's up to Greg Olsen. He is trying to do some damage against his hometown team. He's from a diner in Minnesota. He's cooled off lately. He's had six hits in the series. You would think after the World Series that Greg Olsen just drive home and stay right wrong he will take the plane back when the Braves and drive home. He left his car down in Atlanta so he won't get here until Thursday. So who wins the series will be able to buy any now when there's a lot of tension no score here in the bottom of the second inning there's a lot of tension and numbness in the joints. A lot of pressure on the players has kept her back to start the home. Second of all for his last 13 in the third he's had three hits overall. One of the knows the significance of this affair. The short right and justice has a foreign role retired by the Atlanta hurler. Strange things happen in World Series back in 1924 Game Seven a twelve inning game. Who was in the game. Walter Johnson entered the game and relief hit the top of the ninth inning and the Washington Senators won in the bottom of the 12th four to three over the Giants. Tommy Lasorda talking about using everybody well here's a pretty good example. You saw a moment ago he could be used for a hitter Chile has had three hits. Two of them homerun he's the designated hitter. I'll play. Strike to others only 23 years old and he came to the Atlanta Braves or Doyle Alexander from Detroit signed with Detroit in 1985 and after two lackluster Minor has really blossomed for Atlanta one to the Davis said twenty three twenty four years all he started this season twenty four a part of the young Atlanta Braves pitching staff that's five and a all by Smoltz two on strike we'd talked about the sweeping effect him Pat commented on the sweeping effect of the breaking ball by smoke and that's a good example right there Smoltz throws the curve ball that goes down the left handers the slider that goes away to right handers in the first. Harper is of all Harper with a half dozen hits six out of 17 Brian Harper with that left leg. You'll notice how he has it cocked. That's what hitters do when they try to stay back and wait for the pitch. They a good swing but is in the hole 1 and 2 by waiting for the pitch you're not lunging. The two elements of successful hitting is to wait and have quick hands and that's what they say wait wait wait and then hit the ball in front of the plate. If you can do those two things then you're a hit. We have seen time and time again do well with two strikes and then a good pitch by Smoltz but better hitting back at 3 10 during the season. Ten years to get ahead of the at Harper. Not a fast runner. The pitch are nearly gone Wayne to Welker over at first base. Wayne to Welker play for about 18 years in the major leagues primarily with the Washington Senators and his top salary was eleven thousand dollars a year. And here you may get upwards of one hundred and thirty thousand dollars a share for the winning team tonight 2 and 2. That's what they figure that their full share will be worth for the winners one hundred and thirty maybe even more. One hundred and thirty thousand came back to him to start a hit 18 home runs this season. One on a slider away to Brian Harper and now the fastball away Shane back rounds it hard up the middle. Harper elected to stop at second base because they're two out last time these two guys faced each other Pagliarulo had a solo home run in Atlanta and in that sequence of pitches. John Smoltz had thrown three successful curveballs to four strikes and then Palin really hit the fastball on the inside. So he starts him off tonight with a breaking ball. Inside you're making one and one two on two out Brian Harper is at second. He said Golden Shane Mack the Dragon Ball 2 and 2 green with smokes. And we have a scoreless two innings as the twins scrambled to this Bud's for the blues the reds and the Warriors this Bud's for the Giants the jazz and the magic this Bud's for the home team CBS Sports coverage of game 7 of the nineteen ninety one world series is brought to you by Lexus luxury automobiles the result of a relentless pursuit of perfection Dean Witter. Dean Witter measure success. Woman Buster at a time. And by Budweiser the king of beers who reminds you friends know when to say when. No score after two Greg Olsen working on his swing with his shin guards on the dugout. Do a lot of strange things in the seventh game of the world series. Lemke right. Tension. You can look around the stands and see the owners of each of these clubs the executives as well as the players. Nobody can sit still. We've talked about how the there's more tension in the league championship series and I think generally speaking that's true. But somehow this year it's different in the world series. John Shaw holds the general manager of the Atlanta Braves his first year. Gotta be thinking what can I do to improve this year. In a love field and foul it stays one and two. Cheryl silver from Kansas City certainly made some shrewd moves. They turned out well for the great picked up some free agents such as Terry Pendleton who led the league in batting finished off the picture for the Braves Morris is free and all in World Series starts in 6 and 1 in postseason play. Marc Lampkin with three triples in the series and he had two in one game biggest names I guess most recently Bobby Richardson of the Yankees Tommy Davis of the Dodgers. To the second baseman Natalya Rhames have one hit in the game fight David Justice wasted in the second inning. Dan Lothian has some advice for Lucky Valley art is up. More ahead on the count maybe Terry Pendleton was asking Mark Lemke How do you win a game in this Metrodome. He lost four as a member of the cardinals back in 1987 and he's lost three home games up here this year. Road games for him but of course home games through the hole and the six hit her belly hard in this series one on one out second hit for Atlanta smart nice hitting by belly hard pitch was away and he hits it away. I think Chuck Knoblauch will learn after a while that diving on that carpet is not good policy. You can do that on dirt and get away with it but if you do that over a period of years off the glove and good reaction by belly ironies at second would want to know exactly what it was to Jack reaction's great instincts by belly art we talked about Morris's wild pitches but I think this is gonna be a pass ball. We'll see how it's scored. Yep it scored a pass ball and there's belly art right there anticipating a ball coming out of the glove. And if you don't anticipate it you're not going to get a good jump and he did not fall to the Lonnie Smith who started the game with a fly ball to right hit three home runs in this series. But all four well with men in scoring position. Yeah all three home runs have been solo shots. They can go the other way with the ball the ball three fifty five thousand plus here at the Metrodome in the Twin Cities three or ten years. People say it's a shame that somebody has got to lose one tonight. Know it's a cliche but everybody feels that way including the Minnesota fans they admire the Braves and what they've done. Oh how do you win a game at the Dome. Pendleton wants to know you do something with men on base yardage second line is that first and ground it out to first as first time and he has driven in three runs in the series big difference though. They got their two men on with two outs. There's only one out now Terry probably the appropriate name for a Braves player or for a with runners in scoring position. Scott Erickson had started last night's game in Game 4 Paladin at a home run and a double you can cut it with a knife here folks. And comes up. Harper went out to talk to his hurler and sooner or later if the Braves are going to have good results this fellow is gonna have to pop one had struck out his first time. Atlanta has left three Minnesota to bottom of the third no score as a home run among his four hits. Make three run home run in game number one. Keith Mitchell and Nick Pisarski. Nick has been on the disabled list for two years with the Atlanta Braves with vertigo small steps ahead on the outside edge. Walter has allowed two singles that came in the second after two were up one out. Let's go back 31 years and take a trip to Ole Forbes failed in Pittsburgh in typical fashion was going right to the wire here for swinging a high and then I went down all the field but failed to win the 1950 World Series and learned Myron and a foul ball off the bat of Glen. That is the only home run that has ever ended a world series. Phil Mazur risky game 7 the only home run that ever ended a world series out of play strike two to glad to have some games here that ended abruptly. Yeah this has been a rather unique a World Series in which the winning run was driven in on the final pitch in three different games. That's the first time it's ever been done. Lemke drove in justice in game three and then a Willard sacrifice fly played in Lemke in game four and then last night Kirby Puckett with an 11th inning home run read off and has been retired and a third Latin hacking away and it stays one and two. Remember the first kid bad boy. Glad a lot of sliders away. Smalls gets ahead of plan and tries to come back with a slider and he hangs it in the middle of the plate and gladden does the rest. I think Tom Kelly was talking to Dan Gladden to keep an eye on not block. Either that or increase your lead at second base with one out. It's a good time to try to steal third. He said he he's able to get a big lead. There says the Metrodome in Minneapolis the home of the twins and its game seven of the series. We're in the bottom of the third McCarver and Jack Buck whether you on this is the last baseball this may seem like a harmless sound. But it does push Gladden to third base and the one thing to keep in mind. We talked about the wild pitches of Jack Morris John Smoltz at one team while pitches during the season. That's the most by any pitcher in the major league. So being at third base with two a popular man here I can rap back to the pitchers first and here with a guy like Puckett up there you're not going to give him anything too good to hit. You're going to try to make your breaking balls break a little more. That means there's a chance of it being in the dirt and there's gonna be a little more ride on the fastball. I don't think that they'll get in the pocket by throwing a fastball here Smoltz has just blown the last two fastballs right back. Kirby Puckett see what they go into here. Patrick Greg Olsen what they call we have six more and eight weeks to go will meet again. Don't know where Don't know when we'll meet again some sunny day this game summary is sponsored by Budweiser. We've played three and each team has left three and we're scoreless fourth inning. John Smoltz and Jack Morris holding forth Morris ready to pitch to David Justice while a popular strike little bit of everything from this better hurler and lollipop was sweet if you're looking for it. But most hitters don't look for it. He only throws it four or five times a game. How about that. He's got two more to go. I did the forty six All-Star Game. RIP saw the Ted Williams. The result was a lot different as Williams hit his second home run. That's that you could see all four fingers choking the ball That's a palm ball from Morris had a strikeout and soda Jack Mars Mars and really howling about that last one. Here's that second pitch right there look how Morris chokes that change up and hitters if they do swing at it they have a tendency to swing at the arm mostly. That's how he got ahead of justice but that 0 2 pitch was close. JIM CARR Well from field level watching some of those close pitches in the facial reactions from both Jack Morris and John Smoltz it's pretty evident not pleased with Don thinking your strike zone. But that's pretty that's customary. He's not known in the American League as a pitcher's umpire. Very tight zone David Justice wasn't pleased with that fastball from IRS either. Here's Bream to the opposite field chased by glad he's there. Last week clocked at 63 miles per hour. And of course the palm ball big disparity between that pitch and his split finger fastball. Kitty is there anybody who throws it ball any harder than Morris in the American League. I don't think so. And I think that's one of the big differences Atlanta is seeing pitchers like Morris and tap and who doesn't throw quite as hard with the hard fought ball Hunter ball on I guess Mike Scott when he was healthy was comparable to the way Morris throws his right honours struck out in a second. Jack Morris having no difficulty here in the fourth race and had two hits in a walk hits by Justice and valley on a walk to Ronnie Smith Well hit in the gap and gladden can't catch it. And up to off double for Brian Hutter Hunter gets his fourth hit of the series that is the 40 an extra base hit of this world series. The record for extra base hits by two teams in a world series forty two. So both teams just two extra base hits away. From a world series record there had been 16 home runs hit in the series series record is 17 so there one home run away. And when you think about it Jackie don't think about the last six games is that much offense. Well they've been spread eight home runs for each team two extra bet a few extra any games I guess added to that too. That also could put Atlanta on the court needs up to out of Wilson has six hits five walks the one run in the series. Mark Lemke will bat I think he believes he should be getting more calls and he's been getting to play for him to 0 3 and 2. There's a lot of hitting room up the middle with Olsen bounty hunter running the bases its second half of the 4 0 3 and 0 for each club to play strike 1 2. Can you fly to right his first time and is three out of 24 and 0 for his last court date. Here comes Bobby Cox not to argue. I don't think Olson is really arguing. Cox's saying it didn't hit him out there was a delayed reaction on the part of Ken hurt back and Don taking over the home plate umpire also and I think initiated a slider inside getting ready looked like it did. All right. Looks like it could have much it delayed reaction on the part of her back. Duncan gurus looking down. I think there ought to call that right away and not be enticed to call it after her Beck calls his attention to it seems to me that if you call the play right away that would be the appropriate thing to do. You can't let a hitter talk you into thinking that he was hit by the kid. Judging by the way Olson is a smokescreen. I thought I thought Olson question the call. Yeah that's exactly right. I thought he I thought he questioned the call and then Cox came out. I think that's what brought Cox out of the dugout. Number one a pitcher can't tell whether it hits him or not the catcher can the pitcher what he determines is whether the ball changed direction the ball change directions then it hit him it didn't change directions it didn't hit it ends up left free. They have their lead off man we're talking about the nineteen twenty four World Series well in nineteen twenty six. Check this out with two outs in the bottom of the ninth Babe Ruth was caught stealing second base and that not only ended the game it into the series and that gentleman right there. His name is Pat Olsen he's 90 years young. This is his two hundred and eighty third consecutive World Series game two eighty three. I don't know how many years that come a little top five behind second by drop just as with a good play. How a lot of the ball a second out and justice has done that. Frequently here in post season came up a little burned but he got the ball off the bat. My dad has messed up a couple of balls but he's also made several fine sliding catches in this is among them. Nice play David Justice there are two out with her back. Still up first word breaking ball the baseball field where Chuck not block wins second baseman play down in Texas and then by the way is named after Pat Olsen that 90 year old gentleman that you just saw the roommate of Lou Gehrig Gehrig back in 1924 in the minor leagues. As a baseball fan what a great great great guy. Hey head got his handkerchief waving the camera away. Her back hit by pitch Davis flying out to Harper it out it couldn't be any more even no score after four or three hits each glove no errors in the game. Each team was left for each team has won three games of this ninety one series. Each team has won three games at home in this series. This is the final baseball game of the year. Jack Morris. Mark Lemke. Ball 1 we're underway. I'm rounded out his first time and another hit for the little guy and is number 10. Colonel Lemke that marks the second time in the game the Braves have put their lead off man on base to the point where you would expect a bucket. Now with belly art coming up it is a guarantee that Ballard will be punting on the first pitch. I don't know. Bobby Cox will change it. Mark Lemke on with his 10th hit. Not bad for a twenty seventh round draft choice. That's the fourth hit of the night for Atlanta and no more than one perennial are back holding against the runner. There are a lot of ways to sacrifice successfully on the artificial surface. One of the best ways is just a bunch the ball into the ground. Look at the high hop that Harper has has to contend with and that's enough to get limped to second base. That ball looked like it was off home plate. Good bunt by belly art. The Braves want something from their leadoff hitter with love to get second and one out the top of the fifth. Oh score of Pendleton on deck not the man of the moment for the Braves is Lonnie Smith and he butts and the play by play a real safe first and third one. Rather surprising play by the Atlanta outfielder Well if you do this with a runner at second base who is just bonded over. It's gonna work 100 out of 100 times and had that throw open on the money line he would have been out. Ken Herbert tried to make it work. The ball into the home plate side tally room a fine play. Lonnie Smith the blunt bass hit what's unusual but it worked. No pictures just numbers. We'll see what comes of it. Harper talked to his pitcher on a script that first blunted awfully hard. But Smith down to first base fan base in a hurry and the throw. Just pulling her back off the bag Solana of Smith says to Terry Campbell. You do it. Now live his home for two hours it's easier for Pendleton to do it because now there's a runner at third and still only one but a double play in order Lemke started all of this consternation where the base hit. He was punted down to second advanced on the bumps single by Lonnie Smith. So if you're the infielders now if you're the middle in feel as you said the ball six shot lead to me. We tried for two. If you're on the corners first or third hit hard I come home with the ball. Those are the thoughts and the infielders minds right now. Mack Morris pitching to the league's leading hitter of this year Barry Pendleton wants at least to drive all this game too important for that family to stay away. Popped him up for the second out shortstop once hit and a hazard to our popped up widespread gag me with that right hand. One said hand goes up a lot of times you can hear the infielder but you could certainly see him and Greg Cagney makes the play so glad and stayed away in their two arm two out and up as Ron Gad who is all for seven in Game 6 and 7 0 4 2 the set at the last game he had it with the Braves are going to win a smith is somewhat of a threat to Rondo to drive the run home I don't think Smith's going to run on less game gets two strikes on him one and two now he really tried to block him off the bag. That's a legal play you're not supposed to do it without the ball but if the ball is close to you most umpires will give it to you. You can see Harper the ball rolling out in front of home plate. Harper stays at home. Maurice picks it up and the throwback to third. Watch Pal you roll up. He tried to block him off. He thought he had him but Lemke back just in time. Well that was close really close very close. Ali really thought he had a has gone to two balls and a strike to run against first and third two. Win just back really quick looks like that. The tag was high by Herbert the crowd 3 and 1 one more look at Mike tally room on the third baseman limped half way and he tries to get back. Look at the right knee. PAGLIARULO he drops down but limp he is clearly back in there. Good call John Smoltz goes back toward the pitch for the number eight and nine hitters out there. It's everybody's good friend Ernie Harwell where his world series fondest memory favorite world series moment the 1968 St. Louis seventh game of the World Series the Tigers had come from behind Tigers the series at three games apiece. Lois Gibson was tied up in a brilliant pitching do nothing bad nothing got to the seventh inning the Tigers got two men on Jim northwest to fly ball to center field turned out to be a three base hit the Tigers go ahead and win them world championship of 1968 Iowa will deliver our epilogue I implore you don't go away when this game is over we'll have all the postgame activities after a winner has been determined and the final footage of the night believe me is worth your staying around so please please don't turn it off there is a strike to get you earlier earlier in the nineteen sixty eight series Bob Gibson set the record for most strikeouts in a game in a World Series with seventeen in that game Curt Flood was stuck in the mud on that ball hit by Mark and that's why he didn't get a good job. The Tigers went on to win that game 4 to 1. He was in since before in 67. He knows the tension of writing this when we're in the bottom of the cliff. The lead off me down and one agony has a home run in this series and it's it scream to Smoltz has hit one of three hits walking on struck out three and a gets another strikeout that's his fourth to go on in the inning as copyrighted telecasts presented by authority Major League Baseball without the express written consent of Major League Baseball and gladly struck out up the medal Gladden spanks hit hard up the middle when he can't come up with it and one would think with two outs now that Gladden is gonna be off. You don't know which pitch but he'll probably wait until Smoltz is behind in the chance of a pitch out as much less. It certainly feels like a running situation I have installed 15 bases during the season with got nine here and the Minnesota fifth notice that John Smoltz come sit with his arms away from his body he doesn't bring his hands in. When you do that you have to do that every time see the arms away from the body we have played five scoreless innings and we'll return to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome after this message and a word from your local station the best pinch hitter the Braves have Tommy Gregg has taken his jacket off. He took his soft hat off off and speculating that Brian Hunter and right thumb may be too bruised for him to hit. We'll see who's due up third in the Senate after justice and brief are underway in the six strike one. Here's Tommy Gregg. Ready. Bobby Cox wants him. Yeah. Those hardhats are very uncomfortable. The only time I hit it puts those things on is when he's gonna go up to bat one ball one strike just hit single leading off in the second. He struck out. He's had seven hits and two home runs in his World Series lead off hitter in the sixth hits under her back to the pitcher. Ken hurt back says he plays first base like a hockey goalie. Anything that gets by he thinks is a goal. Hadn't been too many goals and Ken hurt Beck's career with him at first base. He's the best there is. That's what his manager says. He's the best I ever saw says Tom Kelly. I think Tim you and I would throw in for Keith Hernandez in the National League. He's not active though. We're the one to upset green Texans. Let's hear from Jim. Kind of this stage of play. Yeah. Brian Hunter spent a lot of time on the bench flexing that thumb. Checking it out and Tommy Greg is still has a bat in his hand and he's ready to go up and Casey can't swing it. Hunter is on deck standing by five hits and a walk for him he hits it the Herbert and Hunter will take his place at the plate. Ryan struck out in a second Lugar left center in the fourth inning. Some people may not realize how much force a hit or uses when he swings a bat. There are a lot of tendons in them in the fingers and the thumb and you pull one of those tendons and it's very difficult to hit Oh Tommy Greg relaxes two quick outs here in the sixth the the guys will come up for Minnesota at the bottom of the sixth inning stranded five hundred from home run as one of a World Series This Bud's for the blues the reds and the Warriors This Bud's for the Giants the jazz and the magic this Bud's for the home team no score bottom of the sixth inning and you can see Brian Hunter a great deal of pain watch him look at his right thumb that was after making the last out of the top six hunters still in the ballgame. However we'll see whether he hits his next time at bat also struck out for walking on get one here the final football score of the Redskins over the Giants for 17 30. Redskins undefeated team in the National Football League power take you there looks like the hard slider and that's true that the slider is a power pitch. It is not an NBA thick so when you talk about off speed pitches you usually don't include the slider. You know a quick check of the regular season shows that Ken hurt back had three sacrifice plans this year but you'd have to assume they were against left handed pitchers. Mark was upset about the he went around that time one on one. Let's go down to Jim Kot. Tim you know from being behind the plate when Steve Carlton was pitching boy you get a lot of strikes on check swings. And that's what we're seeing here tonight the last one heard back. Tough to lay off that hard slider and Curt serves as the illusion of a strike hitter goes after it when it's in the strike zone and it breaks late the later the break the more effective the pitch good played by Greg Olsen. He goes at it the wrong way. When he comes up the right way Atlanta fans that a lot of good natured fun with Kevin Roberts runner tagging at first. Dan holds over back couldn't move my. Better. Very poor in postseason play against Toronto and the Atlanta Braves now it's chilly Davis. He has struck out flat out one on one out of scoring in the six to brief throws the second gets one and gets the return box. This game is going to be decided late isn't it. CBS Sports coverage of game seven of the nineteen ninety one World Series has brought you by General Motors GM is putting quality on the road limits for quality heating and cooling must be off limits. And by Pontiac and your local Pontiac dealer we build excitement no score through six innings and you will never see a double play turned any faster than the double play turned by Sid Bream and Rafael Bell yard. Watch the quick hands inside of the bag. That's nice. 3 6 3 easy. Tillie Davis out by 3 strides at first. That was pretty with Delgado in the middle of it. Now we go into the seventh inning of the seven game. First up Greg Olsen eight lined out with a runner at second and two out in the fourth hit the ball very well against Jack Morris. What a job these two pitchers have done tonight. Jack Morris Brian Hunter the left fielder of the Braves. I see that right come down one of the windows. By the way this is the 30 second seventh game in World Series history. Only one other decisive game has been scoreless through six innings and that was the game that Ernie Harwell talked about earlier. The seventh game of the nineteen sixty eight World Series Detroit and St. Louis. In that game Detroit scored three in the top of the seventh inning it has left six at this point. Jack Morris has retired five in a row. He is hard to be a hero if you're a hitter tonight. These guys are throwing bus calls up their bars with the fastball high fastball splitter an occasional slider Lampkin of center field and Puckett waits to a seven in a row. Let's hear from Jim at Jack and Tim. I find this fascinating just watching small Tim Morris school. Can you imagine what it was like for John Smoltz as a kid. He's 12 years younger Jack Morris playing in the backyard being a Tiger fan and a Morris was his hero. You always dream about what it's like you know to play in a situation like this and now you're watching a guy do it in real life. It's unbelievable. Nellie are a hit and a sacrifice goalie has won for his career over fourteen hundred at bats in the big leagues. His only home run. Coming off Eric Yao who was then with the San Diego Padres 2 1 1 MLB press moments presented by MasterCard also hit that's amazing. That is a man a big Josh Bell fan. Wish you a long and happy life together. Crowd signing autographs for young fans and the reaction priceless. Isn't this something the seventh game going down to the bottom of the seventh without any score and John Smoltz known as he is Jack Ma is. He's gone through seven eight smokes through a nine inning victory over the Pirates in game 7 of the National League Championship his hitters are being aggressive too. They just can't catch up with you. Everybody seems to be behind the fastballs. Both pitchers maintaining their strength throughout this game. I think because they're throwing so hard you find the infielders off the lines. You see Terry Pendleton it's an indication of how hard he is in the right spot. It's going to him they're worn out. He was in the right spot. When you're throwing that hard then you're infielders have a tendency to play toward the middle of the field. That's why Pendleton was off the line at third base. Sports and Morris maintaining that power throughout Shane Mack is up. He's had a hit one of the four gathered by the twins tonight he punts and handled him with a tough team. Excellent. To what a play by Terry he was playing as deep as we had just shown you yet made the play on same anticipation on the part of Pendleton. The minute mark gets into that Bunning situation Pendleton charges and watch him bare handed Terrific play by penalty here is a very dangerous number eight hitter at the plate Smoltz gets a so enjoyable. Folks this is the longest that any seventh game has ever progressed without the other team scoring longest ever top of the order will come up for Atlanta in the eighth smoke still has to go. Now you're rule death penalty and again he threw out the side we're going into the eighth inning is of this something seventh inning seventh game. This game summary is sponsored by AT&T. It's all pitching here tonight. Jack Morris John Smoltz Ryan hits total the longest scoreless start of a seventh game in a World Series Jack Morris takes it into the eighth place at the top of the order swift fifth panel all one fifth is flat out walked in single with a bunch single in the fifth or the runner at second one did not pay off that's going to drop I think it does and that's a second hit of the night for Lady on base for the third time half swing got him a base hit the third baseman got a lot of ways you can go you can punch you can hit run all right you can play it straight up Pendleton doesn't move the runner along you can you can steal with and other end is all for three tonight and then coming all on Pendleton sacrifice seven times this year the reason that Bobby Cox isn't getting here I think is that the matchup Morris against Pendleton is is better for the Braves and Bobby Cox than the matchup of not as good as penalty as far as averages concerned power yes but not average is the third time in the game Atlanta has put their lead off and on base Tom Kelly pointing to his hand we'll see if Harper does the same thing I think that's the sign to throw over to first base like the goal well whenever Kelly goes to his head then Brian Harper you saw him go to his head and that's the sign for the pitcher to either throw to first base or to use the slide step we've been seeing that too often during this series to try to figure it out so Jack Morris using the slide step there Kelly keeping a close eye on this picture here any if any. Went through his hand again. So this is either a slide step or a throw to first base in the bullpen Steve. But Roseann and Mark got through the league's leading hitter at the plate at twenty two home runs this season plus two in the World Series. Coy foul tipped and then the ball went in the dirt. And then it skipped in to Harper's net. That was the call. Let's see if it happened. Yes. Good call. By third base umpire Terry. Clearly into the dirt runner at first. Nobody out and the Atlanta on that in the left center field at Ball is down and the bad guy off the wall. Lonnie Smith is held up at third and he didn't do very good baseline. It was terrible by law. He didn't pick the ball up. He stopped when he ran at second base. He may have gone for the decoy around second. Lonnie Smith sees the ball in the gap and left. He did not block. You see Cagney and not Knoblauch combining for the court. Smith clearly could have scored on the ball had he been running all the way as it was the decoy not block and get the hell Smith at third base not block. But one thing you don't do if you're the runner from first base. You don't look at the infield. Never trust the infield only trust where the ball was hit. Smith with a clear view of where that ball was hit and he went for the decoy at second base and that's why he didn't score the infield comes in now as Brian Gant comes up. I thought Atlanta got a bad break because the ball is going to jump over the fence. They got a bad break when they did that for and we still have no score. But it's second and third and nobody out. Another chance for game and he pops it out of for three. He left two on the third and he left two on and the fifth that he wants at least a fly ball to put Atlanta on top here in the eighth inning. Tom Kelly goes down the line with Jack Morris little roller and they'll get an out without a run scored. So here panic. But let's go back to the decoy play. Atlanta Smith running. Look at Chuck not lock the second baseman and watch him go through the routine of throwing a ball. That is not there. Now watch get me. There's Cagney right there. He acts like it's a play too. That stops Lonnie Smith. It confuses him. He stops at second base. He continues to third. But it's too late. So Lonnie could have score scored. He didn't. And now it's one out with runners in second and third. And Tom Kelly goes to the mound. He has been yet and Guthrie in the bullpen and justice and brain coming up a big out that was when they'd gotten Ronnie Academy in 0 4 for take a trip downstairs to Jim Cox it appeared as you'd imagine this conversation was Jack Morris who would you rather face David Justice sit green while walking in Kelly Morris who would you rather pitch to Atlanta coming into this setting at left 6. Now they've already missed a scoring opportunity. Justice is going to be war. It will be the second pass by Jack Morris and it's going to load the bases with one out here in the eighth inning of a scoreless game and they're Sid Bream in the on deck circle. He'll be up with a base it loaded and won out great opportunity for Atlanta nasty spot for him to win seventh game. Folks said Breen is all for three grounded a second flight and left grounded the first ball on Earth. There's always that problem too and you give the intentional walk to load the bases runners on base. Tonight Atlanta to throw loving twins 1 for 10 Bobby Cox knows that he's sure to have had said bingo they want to do is get that to strike Colonel Morris in possession of that split finger the liberal a lot of pressure on Harper also if the splinters in the dirt Ronnie Smith at third instead of on the bench. Pendleton doubled as its second walk. Justice and the players the whole one a huge double play. This was for her back Harper back to her back. The go ahead run on it first. Nobody out or the Twitter. So now what Dan Gladden wants to do is change the funding situation into a base hit if you're John Smoltz on the other hand you want to change the failure to get the runner over into an out without moving the runner runner back. So Gladden fails to move the runner over and get the pitcher credit for that. Metrodome in Minneapolis bottom of the 1 the nose score seven hits for Atlanta time for Minnesota a strike. You have a good hit and run man but not a good hit run pitcher John Smoltz his best and most effective when he throws high fastball. A pitcher he throws like fastballs. You don't want to hit and run a because the chances of you putting the ball in play in year two three and we'll see what the twins do as they try to come up with a run pitch out by Atlanta. Nothing's shaking one ball one strike. Women pinch running for Bush runner going base hit did indeed hit and run. Newman running on the play. The line dragged just over the glove upset green. Newman into 30 back has not been a good hitter for all season and if Cox goes to a left hander I think that's exactly what he's going to do. John Smoltz was terrific tonight but he was knocked out here in the eighth inning in favor of Mike's standard first and third one out. No score. BARNES The Reverend took the game scoreless in the eighth inning pitch seven and a third no runs six hits struck out. Hit one walk. One gives way to Mike's standard let's go down to Jim Carr or Jack Mike Stanton. According to Ken heard back was as tough a left hander as he has seen all year. Probably the most comparable Scott Rudin scheme of the Chicago White Sox Tim McCarver called a turn. It's gonna be her back up there with the bases loaded because they are indeed walking. Kirby Puckett you talk about Racine for Bobby Cox I'm telling you this takes a lot of guts right here. But consider the reasoning the way the Braves have been swinging the bats. Bobby's probably considers one run. You know that's going to open the floodgates when one runs going to win it. So he's playing it like the bottom of the ninth instead of the bottom in the and that gives you an idea of what Jim cotton was talking about and that's why her back doesn't like the face. But here he is facing him and the most important situation of this very interesting battle right here is that Stanton has been running that fastball in on her back and the way he handled within Steve and the left fielder fastballs inside and sliders away Stanton to her back. Well it doesn't matter who you're rooting for is a curbing hit by a pitch over to any hits and foul one at one stand and wants to strike out pop up or double play. And Chuck Knoblauch down at second and they walk her back is all for his last 15 0 4 eight runners in scoring position in the world. I'm sure of the general manager of the Braves sweating out his pitcher standing on her back and look for something sends us into the ninth inning Scarlet. So the Braves catch a break. Stanton catches a break and her back failed to bring him home. Jammed on the pitch and Lemke is there and he steps on second and unassisted double play. Unbelievable. Hasn't this been and isn't it magnificent seventh game. Ninth inning no score. Throw it all Jack Morris is still on the Hill for the twins and ball one hundred we have the new shortstop Elderman after they left it gave me for the successful pinch hitter Randy Bush Potter as a double in three trips to the third baseman pal you're below one once again Morris maintaining his velocity so Pags Pagliarulo stays off the line and makes the play day and that double play Chuck Knoblauch breaking at second base a third base coach remains the guy second to watch the line drive but you really can't fault not block on that play. So you go by Smith double by penalties Smith held up at third base and lucky with two outs he's had a hit shutout that rather hits the Braves have left eight and he didn't do a double play this is a fan tested game you plows their moves on deck. Well bad for belly art if the LNP is able to get too tough to take the Shelley Davis. Brian Harmer a remarkable job Smoltz was on the Hill ball one strike Bobby Cox the manager of Atlanta when talking about this particular pitcher said it doesn't matter whether they're left handed or right handed standing you get a twinge of left seven hit into two double play. The only seventh game of the world series that has been won in the bottom of the ninth inning will match Trotsky's home run back in 1960. And that was also the only World Series game. Only World Series to end with a home run. Billy Davies pops a foul One ball two strikes and a twelve at a game. We've had an eleven and a game about Jack Morris tying shut out it against this tough Atlanta club looks like he's ready for more. Nobody's warming up for the twins he's had six hits that got get him to walk out of play off the bat of Davis out of play again. A lot of guts did it first and third one out. Kirby Puckett the batter Mike Stanton end of the game walking. Kirby Puckett intentionally get her back lining into a double play unassisted DeMarco left he didn't hit him well hit it off the fist. Speaking of off the into right center that ball gets down the outfield it was keen to prevent the extra base hit but watch how close he comes the missing first thing. Matter of fact I think he did miss it and that you know is very close he never touched him with the side of his foot. And I think that's why he went back. What may have a pinch runner Jarvis Brown here it is right here. Watch Kelly Davis right there did he touch first base. I'll tell you it was too close for him to try and go to second base and I think that's why he came back Harper buddy. He showed a lot of times. That's why pitchers throw to first base the kind of batter to commit runs for him. Well this ball almost got away from Olson a high fastball almost took his glove off start drawing awfully hard they switched off and gave him a swing at that fastball one and one of what Brian Harper did he found the scene he found the seam between state and green it looks like a graph that Stan has. But watch Brian Harper intentionally push the ball to the right side and he finds the gap between Stanton and green and Stan trying to track the ball down appears to have hurt himself looks like when he was trying to turn around after he picks the ball up and there it is. He finds it hard between the charging free and skate and it looked like Winston retrieve the ball. He may have sprained the knee. No pitcher coming in is Hania what a game water series at three games apiece game seven runners at first and second nobody out and a hundred paying you into the game and relief might stand him. How are the twins going to play. One would think you're you're in a must sacrifice situation but aren't you Mike Pagliarulo the next batter if Mack bunt successfully Pagliarulo is walk and then you have an who is in there as the shortstop. You have two left handed pitchers pinch hitters left Paul Sorrento and Jean Larkin. I'd say our Shane Mack plays it with two and a foul but strike one. Mack is one for three a good one and a double play. The runner ends up at third with two out left Game belly are pulled it off. How you might ask how Tom Kelly going away from the squeeze are the fun. And look at Lemke back to belly hard to read the takeout slide by Brian Harper unsuccessful. And a remarkable double play turned by the right. What a pivot by failure. Unbelievable and his strategy backfired. And now they're going to walk how you're Rudolph like Tom Kelly putting the hit instead of the bun on thank you that with 3M charging that's going to leave the right side of the infield vulnerable. It did at first base but not a second left. He read it all the way they are going to walk. Now you know Al Norman will be too. He is being called back it it'll be first and third two outs bottom of the ninth no score seventh game Kelly scorecard. He soon will write in the name of Paul's rental. We'll be batting for Newman. The Braves got a startling double play here. Take us within one out of extra innings for the third time in this series. The Braves still have to get their I walked upon your route. Two things to keep in mind. A hundred pain. Yeah. Maybe two wild pitches in the National League Championship Series. With the runner at third base paying throws very hard out to talk to him and both pitches came with Greg Olsen catcher one more look at that brilliant double play turned by Mark Lemke Rafael belly hard and said Kareem on a butterfly play crease responsibility was the cover first base but he held this position and when the ball was hit he made the play and pivoted. You see him talk first anyway. Harper bearing down on belly art at shortstop and just a terrific double play turned by left going belly up. They're going to pitch to Paul holding the runner at first. Big fans at third with two out and so retro and hammers at one check brain has moved behind the runner at first base. You're playing this game as though nobody were on first value you Rula. If he tries to steal second of course has to make sure that he makes it but if they're going to give it to you you might as well take it. Right to add another good swing by Sorrento. The reason that Bobby Cox has opted to pitch the right hander to the left hander here is yet rather the inexperienced player beats him if he's going to do it. Dan clash is on deck. But Rondo is all for one in this series. COX hoping this game gets into the 10 20 if it does haul off some more adjectives to describe this baseball going foul ball how your real always running unmolested off course. Said Green Way Back and as we said if they're going to give it to you go ahead and take it with two outs there's not even gonna be a play at second base anyway. Both infielders. Actually all three infielders the shortstop second baseman and first baseman playing as though there were no runner on first base. The only running that counts the runner and still open to runner going oh another nasty swing by the river. Ball up a bit from pain. But tough to catch up with it. There's pinch hitter then up and down with the twins a few giants is the big run. Jarvis Brown a speedster at third undergoing 10 tending. Coming up how much better can it get. The twins have into the 10th anyway go scoreless game Atlanta bench ecstatic after getting out of that night and it should not be a scoreless game. I mean if you go back to the eighth inning with Lonnie Smith on it first base he went for the decoy you see Chuck Knoblauch the second baseman throwing a ball that wasn't there to Greg Cagney gagging Cagney acting like he's completing the play. I think what happened is Smith lost vision. He went for the decoy and then he looked up and tried to pick the ball up and all he saw was white handkerchiefs in left center field. He couldn't pick it up. Therefore he stopped. He stopped too long and he kept running. He scores the only run of the game and the Braves win the World Series in a game stocked full of strategy an anti strategy in the bottom half of that inning Mike Stanton and after he walked. Kirby Puckett with runners at first and third. That's right first and third and perfect lines one off the handle the Limpy and lefty steps on second. What a bizarre eighth inning that was in the Atlanta a green hit and two up double play with the bases loaded Atlanta left and into a double play and hit it with three double plays. And this is Jeff wowser the pinch hit. And Scott let's play short for the win. He's playing short unusual position for him. Jack Moore is still pitching and a foul ball. Harper can't see it. Plows are batting for Billy. He didn't know where it was when it was going up but he found it coming down. Watch this. He plays here every day. Said I don't see it. There it is. Got it. It's the first time since 1924 that a world series seventh game has gone into extra. This is the third X drinking game in World Series play in a seven game series. There have never been three extra innings games and three game six and this one one on one Julie Atlanta designated hitter there is one out Lonnie Smith is the and Terry Pendleton will follow temp training. No deanna Braves choir. Ted Turner tried to stay with it. Want him to the county. Tell him to Smith has three World Series home run. The velocity on his fastball were nine and two thirds innings lot of superlatives for that guy and a lot of horses on both sides. But just watch Jack Morris work. He is a war horse. That guy right there Toronto twice. One game one pitched in game four. No decision in that Hamilton has a double. It should have been good enough to drive home or run in the eight the first time since nineteen eighty nine. Well Jack Mars has gone more than five innings shortstop Elias scoreless game going into the bottom of the 10th inning attend a sporting event or watch a World Series or some other athletic conference not realize at the time how sensational it is. Later you look back as a man. I was glad I was there. That was something tonight. It's so apparent that this is one of the most remarkable baseball games ever. Yeah you're trying to look for some historical perspective to look back on but you can't find any. It's a one of a kind and it has been a remarkable evening and everybody I'm glad they're here. All right let's get out of Jim coffee say what he thinks after having pitched 25 years in the big leagues. We're really going to enjoy what this is we've been apart up here for the last 10 days kind of. We're just soaking it up right now. But as the years go by we say while this has got to go down as one of the greatest World Series ever. Our statistician Steve Hart keeps handing us cards. Is this the first time this is the first time that the first time this batter against payment broken back bad flight. I'm Brian Hunter retrieved by game and gladden never slowed down you have heard of the catch in the nineteen fifty four World Series at Dan Gladden scores the winning run you might hear about the bad guy from that putting the twins put their leadoff man on the eight they put the first two on and the night the twins have an excellent runner at second carrying the winner one ball one strike now we'll see some more strategy or you know you're going to get one intentional a walk that's Kirby Puckett and the bun a successful one not block to Pendleton the bream for the first down I remember the twins have never lost a World Series game in this Metrodome say you know the alternative Bobby Cox I doubt very seriously that they will do that can hurt back they're going to walk down the outfield comes in the outfield in a position where they can stand flat footed and nail the runner at third if they catch the ball a long fly ball and the twins are the world champions do you pitch to Ken Herbert there's Chuck Knoblauch who did his job his jobs out of the way Bunning fled to third base Jack Ma's as pets tend to shut out and he's on deck is her back. How will they deal with him. Cop what's going on where you are. It wouldn't surprise me to see him walk her back. Also because Jarvis Brown is now the designated hitter and the last left handed pinch hitter Jeanne Larkin has a bat up the runway remember pain you striking out at last night's after hitting with a fastball inside and then going away twice. Her back is vulnerable inside but they're going to put him on Two and it looks like Jean Larkin is gonna be the pinch hitter for Jarvis Brown. This will be the third intentional walk but Peniel says he relieved. Here are these at scoreless game bottom of the. They chased the Dodgers they caught him and beat him by a game. They chased the pirates and beat them in the seventh game of the playoffs. They went home and beat Minnesota three straight games. Get out of the hole. Now they're only a fly ball away from being the runner up. But don't discount paying the batter will be Jane Larkin. More from Jim Cobb. Well I don't know if Bobby Cox is aware of all the injury problems on the Minnesota roster but Gene Larkin can almost see him limping up to home plate. He can swing the bat but he cannot and won out. He has one for three in a series. Looks like it's his left knee that is swelling swollen Kenny alluding to the left knee. He also has a shin guard on his right ankle. If you hit it far enough you don't have to run. And I'm sure that's what Gene Larkin is thinking right now. Braves pull off a double play in the six in the eighth and the ninth. The infield is in the outfield as it's funny. You know they're going to Templin now is talking to Ryan Hunter. They left field Jeff blouse or the shortstop his back Mark Limpy as I think the key point is that Jean Larkin is not a fast runner. I think he can afford to stay back and feel the middle infielders Minnesota bench after they get this winning run across here in the 10th that's carried by the Minnesota Twins have won the nineteen ninety one World Series in a stunning 10 inning game. Those are state troopers lining the diamond down there but you don't see any of the fans going down in the field. Folks they are happy just to look on and applaud their heroes including Jack Morris. And what a stud he has been throughout this entire season for the twins from opening day to pitching in the all star game to winning the first game of the ALCS winning the first game in the world series and closing out the Atlanta Braves to take home the trophy for the Minnesota Twins. He'll be doing hugs and kisses and folks all night long and deservedly so Pat O'Brien a lot of time in the sauna. Tommy I think they printed these up early but you're absolutely right. Twins capture the world series. How about Packer the World Series soccer. That was one of the greatest picking performances I have seen in World Series history. This guy was fantastic. He is a winner. As I said before the game began. You got to ride on the coattails of a winner Inside the Minnesota Twins locker room the celebration and function. We've seen a lot of sporting celebrations. The crowd is still outside. The twins are down there and somewhere in there is our colleague Jim Pat Kenny. I don't even know if this is fair. But I want to present Curt Ritter present the Chevrolet most valuable player trophy. I mean there are probably about 20 of them but is there a better one than Jack Morris for the job he did tonight. It's my privilege to introduce Curt river Curt Ritter Chevrolet make the presentation to Jack Morris the most valuable player of the nineteen ninety one World Series Curt. Oh very much Jimmy. Jack what a bear down performance thing that I want to tell you. That was a thrill for everybody around IBF a Chevrolet and all the two leaders like to present you with the Chevrolet MVP Trophy award and the keys to a new Chevrolet Astro van that'll be donated to the charity of your choice in your name. Congratulations. Thank you. Jimmy thank you very. Have you got enough strength left to hold that trophy. I mean we talked all night. The Minnesota Twins signed Jack Morris and the word that came into play was horse and you were a horse that I think about one hundred and thirty five pitches and it didn't appear that you lost anything. I just didn't want to come out to the guys kept fighting. I got to congratulate the Atlanta Braves. What a what a great series. I mean they fought tooth and nail to find one runner games these guys in this room. Somebody had to go home a loser but nobody is a loser in my mind is two of the greatest teams that fought so hard all year long and I'm just proud to be a part of it. Yeah nobody really was a loser. I'd like to know what it felt like. I mean you come off the mound with an emotional ending and yet your ballclub doesn't score and you got it. You got to dig down and go back out there again. What were those feelings like seventh eighth ninth inning. Well there's a lot of guys that influenced me in my career about the battle and the guys and don't worry about what we do offensively because sometimes a pitcher has no control over that. But perseverance I guess I just didn't want to quit. And somehow we figured out a way to win this thing. All right Jack Morris. Nineteen ninety one World Series most valuable player is there a more deserving one. Pat O'Brien Hi Kitty. We'll be back action and celebrations Stay with us folks. Kirby Puckett in Minnesota Jack Morris will get on his Harley Davidson with that trophy. We'll be back after a commercial a local station. Stay with us. My colleague Rouleau is telling me the other day he was anxious to go trick or treating with his son but the treats have come early for him as his Minnesota Twins have scored a big win over the Braves to win the World Series. The crowd is still here waiting for curtain calls from their players and their players are down where Jim Scott is for the presentation. Hi Pat. My pleasure to introduce the commissioner of baseball Fay Vincent and he has once a year he gets this rare privilege I'm not too sure this year there shouldn't have been two of what a memorable World Series Commissioner present the winner's trophy. I'm delighted and two of these gentlemen from Minnesota Mr. Kelly. Mr. Pohlad Mr. Bell. Mr. MacPhail let me present this trophy which is of course symbolic of your having achieved the world series victory it was I think probably the greatest World Series ever. I was proud to be here. And I think all the fans who are here appreciate the effort you made and the great effort of the Braves two superb teams. Finally if I may say the president was to congratulate the president United States and invite you to the White House for a ceremony where he can congratulate you personally. We're delighted for you. You have my personal good wishes. All right thank you Mr. Commissioner Carl Pohlad the owner of the twins and I'd like to get a word from Andy MacPhail we've shown a lot of pictures of the players the manager of the coaches. But I think the man that was probably the architect of this 1991 Minnesota Twins team that took some chances and signed some players and got some money's worth with this man's money. Andy McPhail your feelings right now. Well thank you. Jim I just want to take this opportunity to thank our scouts or Mali instructors and managers and front office staff particularly Tom as coaches did a great job the players and Karl for taking a giant risk for us. I'm glad it paid off. Thanks for everything. All right Carl Pohlad provided the money Andy MacPhail provided the players and Tom Kelly was the man that put the team together and ran it down the field in time. Your thoughts about not just this team this whole series in this night tonight an unbelievable scene. It was a storybook ballgame. The whole series was like a story book going to play it out. Chapter 7. The Braves were just outstanding. I don't know which team played better if one did or one did not. And by write your prize you cut it in half and give it to the half to the Braves and half to us and they were just great. We're just fortunate to win this ballgame with a storybook ball series and I'm proud of all my players and I'm proud of the Braves they were just outstanding on a very emotional embrace for Jack Morris after this game. And when you got him you said we got a horse. He was one the night wasn't it 10 innings on three days rest against a Braves team of that caliber. There's quite a remarkable effort. I was really examine my head seeing what I was doing sending him back out there for the tenth thing what he wanted to pitch and I said well it's just a game. We'll get him babe. Well it was a game some game and I'd say there was more than one team in this game we're going to hear from Bobby Cox the manager of the Atlanta Braves right after these words. There it is. Host as maybe one of the greatest World Series ever the Metrodome in Minneapolis Minnesota. Let us had our congratulations. Up here to the Atlanta Braves for a tremendous season. A lot of tremendous players and they gave it their all but just came up short and this one. On that note let's go down to Tim McCarver who is with the skipper of the Braves Bobby Cox I am with Atlanta manager Bobby Cox and Bobby there were so many times during that game that you didn't think I'm sure that you were gonna be giving this interview as part of a losing ballclub. Well tell me we had numerous opportunities to win our ballgame. We just didn't get the big head. We had runners on second third no outs. We couldn't get the ball out of the infield and Terry hit a ball into the gap and of course Lonnie stopped and went back. He lost the ball I guess and would've scored on that probably. But we didn't. But you figure are you going to score a run if you have runners a second third no outs and we just didn't do it. There's two outstanding pitchers going ahead and head tonight and Jack Morris and John Smoltz and Morris would get in trouble and get us out and Johnny Smoltz pits one hell of a game in our bullpen. Well also just I hate to be on the short end of it but we are. What a gutsy move in the bottom of the eighth inning also with you walking Kirby Puckett with runners at first and third and pitching to Herbert. Well Kirby is a special guy in the back of my mind all the time. He's a guy that can beach and he deserves a lot of credit for the success of the Minnesota franchise I know that he's a guy that we try to avoid if we can. Have you met with your club. Well we really haven't had time. I think everybody's a little bit frustrated mad right now. We felt we should've won a game before this and closed it out and felt like we should have won the ballgame tonight but we didn't. We'll be OK. We'll be ready next spring. My congratulations on a terrific year. Well thank you to him and congratulations to CBS. I know you guys did a great job. Thank you very much. Bobby Cox the manager of the Atlanta Braves and a very classy guy. Think about where they were after the All-Star break in all the respect they've gained since then. Let's go back down to Jim cocooning. All right Pat it seems like about half the team here they're winning Minnesota Twins a lot of memories of this World Series up and down about 18 times the night Rick Aguilar. Your thoughts on the series and on being a part of this ballclub as a premier closer. Well first I don't think I've just said a blessing to be here. It's great teammates and organization. It's just been a great blessing. I'd say just very emotional very draining physically mentally. But you can't say enough about the effort to Jack gave us tonight and the way we battled the whole series just all around terrific terrific series. Rick Aguilar How about a key play in tonight's game which was when Chuck not block on the ball at Pendleton hit along with Greg Dagny a little big league decoy play and that was key in the game. I mean how do you react that quickly to making that play. Well you know we do it during the season and we just both sit in the gap and we just try to carry out a double play and we get Lonnie's attention. You get all confused out there and and there being a big play the game. All right. Quickly the hero of last night's game holding the World Series trophy. Kirby Puckett two year two times in five years doesn't get any better and it doesn't get any better and this man is the best areas and we're the best. This is it about Ken heard back a lot of people he didn't have a good series with the bat but a lot of people got a chance to say just see the way this guy can play first base. Now you said yesterday you were having fun but deep down and they're pretty nerve wracking. I looked over at Lemke at second base in the last inning ready for you to hit the ball. I grabbed onto my stomach and you grabbed on to his head. I was getting the US out there but we got to hang your heads. I was a great series and I was happy. It'll go down in history I think is one of the most memorable and other big part of it. Dan Glavin in the middle of everything as usual and coming off a late season slump what a high for you right now. Yeah it is I think everybody's pretty excited right now. I don't think Atlanta those guys played real well. They don't have anything to hang our heads about anybody really could've won this series and it just happened they had opportunities to score so did we. But we had to last about in the 10th and Geno came through. Sure did an emotionally drained Minnesota clubhouse. Let's go back. Pat O'Brien I'll be coming back in just a moment but first a couple of messages. Welcome back to the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The twins have won the World Series. Jack Morris is the MVP one did nothing was your score 10 innings. The two men who were right about home play calling the game for you. Jack Buck and Tim McCarver fellows on a series. Well what what a series what a clincher. Well I'll tell you they're going into it it may sound trite but both teams Cinderella teams. The difference I think between this story and the other story the real one about Cinderella and that story there's only one prince I think in this series. There are a bunch of princes weren't there. They were terrific the Braves were great all year. Well you've heard it all but it's a shame that anybody had to lose the thought that I have in my mind Tim after watching all of this action is that the season is over and everybody in the game a fan a coach or a manager or front office scout surrender and they say that's enough especially after a game like Christmas comes new year's contracts are signed and trades are made. Free agency and then baseball like the rose beneath the April snow will force its way to the front again and we'll have the fever once more. But we can leave this baseball season to rest. It's in the book. It's to rest but it'll be very memorable for you and me and for everybody. It's been fun. Don't go away we've got some beautiful pictures. Baseball picture for you to enjoy. Let's go back to Pat O'Brien. All right guys as you say around here we can sleep in November right. We have just concluded our second year of covering Major League Baseball here on CBS and believe me we have put our hearts and our souls into this labor of love. This year's World Series has gone the distance put it in a way it was a lot easier to cover because the games have been so dramatic two teams charging from worst to first and two cities backing them up with everything from tomahawk chops to homer hankies. But now for so many of us this is a sad time of the year really so I'll just whisper the words. Baseball season is over but the beauty of baseball is that it never really goes away. And one other sport can boost the boast of a hot stove league. But you know what really warms the heart during the chill of the off season. It's the thought that spring training is right around the corner. And that note for all of us here at CBS Sports I'm Pat O'Brien long from Minneapolis baseball breaks your heart it is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring when everything else begins again and it blossoms in the summer filling the afternoons and evenings and then as soon as the chill rain it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. Going back is Carter and it is some off the wall that Carter comes up limping.
