good afternoon and welcome on behalf of monsignor walter rossi director of the basilica of the national shrine i welcome all of you here for our 12 noon liturgy and in a very special way i welcome all of our students who are visiting us from immaculate conception school in columbus columbia illinois welcome also welcome to all of our visitors here to the shrine but also in a very special way those who are joining us at home and throughout the world from our live stream brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] is [Music] r [Applause] [Music] yes foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy land that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering air man who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord [Music] be with me lord when i am in trouble [Applause] [Music] you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty [Music] my god [Music] [Music] me [Music] no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tears [Music] please [Music] upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your fort against a stone [Music] my [Music] [Music] lord when i am in trouble [Music] because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name [Music] i will deliver [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for every one who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord [Music] today jesus christ [Music] one does not oh [Music] r the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you were the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish and this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him up to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord the word lent comes from the old english word for spring and so when the liturgical season of lent comes around the season of spring is soon to follow and as the weather gets warmer in these coming months we also turn our minds and activities to cleaning up our houses even our spiritual houses as we begin to do some spring cleaning in our souls in our homes we tend to clean away the dirt dust and grime that has accumulated over the weeks and months and so in our spiritual lives we also look for the sins in our lives that hinder us from following christ closer and so we celebrate the sacrament of confession to cleanse us of our sins we always begin lent with a story of the spiritual struggle and temptation of jesus christ even jesus was tempted to sin what is sin it's one of those things that we think we understand but when we scratch beneath the surface it gets a little fuzzy but unless we really know what it is we won't be able to clean it up jesus's temptation in the desert teaches us what sin is sin is disobeying god because we don't trust him each of the devil's temptations tries to get jesus to veer off the path of god's will god has given jesus miraculous powers to convince people of god's love for them the devil invites jesus to use those powers for self-indulgence by turning stones into bread god has sent jesus to conquer the whole world through mercy and grace the devil tries to get jesus to take a shortcut by offering him incomparable political power and worldly glory god has promised to support jesus in his mission the devil tries to get jesus to use god's support for a different self-centered mission by doing a miraculous swan dive off the top of the temple but throughout all this jesus trusts his father's wisdom and so he is able to resist these temptations to disobey god's will disobedience from lack of trust is at the core of every sin no matter how big or small the devil wants to separate us from god god who is the source of true happiness and so he weakens our trust and lures us unto other paths sin by trying to make us self-sufficient and self-dependent curtails our true fulfillment when we don't trust god more than ourselves we can't become what god wants us to become what he created us to become think about the saints saint padre pio saint teresa of calcutta pope saint john paul ii they achieved so much they are so much more fruitful than more people than most people and that's because they don't depend solely on their own intelligence or prudence they trust god and they depended on him sustained by only grace and prayer jesus encounters the devil imagine the devil tries to put god himself to the test and famously the devil tempts him three times and each time as we heard sustained by the spirit and with a command of god's revealed word christ can resist temptation he is victorious over temptation just as he will be victorious over death like that devil in the desert how often do we put god to the test how often do we negotiate with god and ignore his will to suit ours how often do we pray that yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory yet we turn away to seek our own glory to demand our own power and to build our own little kingdom you see the message christ has for us today is a message of hope we can conquer sin in our lives and in the world around us we just need to stay united to jesus christ that's what the eucharist is for that's why god gave the eucharist for us and that's also what the bible is for jesus parries the devil's attacks by quoting from the scriptures the inspired word of god as we have begun the season of lent our holy father pope francis also encourages us as he said prayer charity and fasting are not medicines meant only for ourselves but for everyone they can change history because they are the principle ways for god to intervene in our own lives and in the world they are weapons of the spirit during these forty days of lens i pray that we may resolve to be fortified by the same spirit and resolve which gave jesus strength against evil like jesus may we cultivate a deeper prayer life and turn to sacred scripture to discern god's will for us and to hear god speaking to us in these 40 days may we rely on the abiding presence of the holy spirit when we are weak and thank him when we are made strong and when these forty days of lent are through may we sing ever joyfully that christ has conquered sin and death i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of siblings and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let us now raise our voices in faith mindful of god's power and mercy that through prayer in the sacraments all members of the church may grow deeper in their faith during this season of lent let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those in public office will seek to build up the common good in our own nation and throughout the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our world leaders that they might employ diplomatic strategies to end war and violence and bring peace to all nations especially in ukraine let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god will grant freedom and conversion to all those who are blinded by sin addiction or doubt let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god will bless the church with many priests and religious to serve as instruments of his divine pardon and mercy in the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the special needs we hold in our hearts and for the intentions enrolled in the shrine's lenten remembrance let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all who have died and gone before us in faith may know the fullness of life in heaven let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer father have mercy on your church in her need hear the prayers we offer with all our hearts and never abandon the people who share your life through christ our lord amen we invite you to join in support of the ministry of the basilica of the national shrine during the unprecedented days where our ministry has been greatly limited your contributions are all the more appreciated thank you for being as generous as your means allow [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] jesus [Applause] [Music] r yes [Music] is [Music] me so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim heavenly [Music] [Applause] is is you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting up your sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] r therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and wilton our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in every [Music] kingdom come i will be down on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from here deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith
