[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] you are merciful o lord and despise nothing that you have made you overlook people's sins to bring them to repentance and you spare them for you are the lord our god in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit we open the season of land by imposing ashes in our foreheads let us recognize that god is holy god is merciful and god loves let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as you take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet trump even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and whipping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich and kindness and relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave him behind a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridge room quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nation's ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and off my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have heard you and on the day of salvation i help you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god if the day you hear his voice harden not christ ashwin's day opens the season of lent have you ever asked the question why is this season called lent i have three answers the first meaning of land in german is spring it is springtime especially for europe in the philippines it is summer and in the middle of the lantern season the trees become dry the plants become dry and the grass has also become dry but you know what during the time when the trees become dry it is also the time when the roots of the trees sink more deeply into the earth in other words it is also springtime but it is not a springtime that we can see from the leaves and the flowers it is springtime for the roots so length is springtime for the soul when you go to europe when you go to america you will see flowers a bloom during the season of land because land is that it is springtime for the soul it is sacrifice yes it is prayer yes it is charity yes but the soul flourishes the soul is refreshed during the season of land on an ordinary wednesday you don't get so many people at the cathedral but it is wednesday it is eight o'clock there is no usual schedule and you are here because ash wednesday is spring for the soul it is lent the second meaning of land in latin lente means slowly slowly if you have been moving very fast during the season of land slowly walk slowly run through life and appreciate the little things that you have ignored slowly because haste makes waste line we end up tired with life we end up fatigued we end up exhausted so the lenten season is also a time to slow down and then to appreciate the breeze to appreciate family to appreciate the friends that we have ignored to connect once more with the parents that we have not seen for so long because we are so busy with our career we are so busy with ourselves the second meaning of land is slowly the first meaning of land is springtime it is time for new blooms and new flowers and new leaves there is still a third meaning land land in english is the past tense of land when somebody lands the other person borrows when another borrows the other person is landing so [Music] length is also a time to remember that everything we have is borrowed everything we have is borrowed and god is the big lender the big lender is not the best pawn shop the big lender is not the kindest bank the biggest lender is god himself he has lent us so much but there will be a time when we have to return what we have borrowed there will be a time when we have to return what he has lent to us and that time will be a day when we remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return this season of land this ash wednesday let us reflect on those three meanings of land land is springtime land is time to go slowly land is time to remember everything is borrowed and you have to return what you have borrowed but you must return it cheerfully with abundance remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return let us stand to bless the ashes that will be imposed on our foreigns o god who desire not death of sinners but their conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be blessed be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we acknowledge we are not we are but ashes and shall return to dust may through a steadfast observance of land gain pardon for sins and units of life after the likeness of your recent son who lives and good we pray lord hear our prayer may government officials shun corruption and serve their constituents in humility and honesty we pray lord hear our prayer may those who think they have nothing to repent of wake up from their self-righteousness enjoin the rest in asking for god's mercy and forgiveness we pray lord hear our prayer may the mark of ashes on our forehead remind us of our human fragility and brokenness and move us to walk humbly before the lord we pray lord hear our prayer god our father look with love and our sacrifice as we follow the footsteps of jesus your son who calls us the repentance because the kingdom is near now and forever amen [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness have received this brother to offer you which earth has given human hands have made it will become for us our bread of [Music] blessed are life lord god of all creation further your goodness serve receive this wine that we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual dream lord god we ask you to receive us and we please your sacrifice [Music] [Music] [Music] pray brethren that your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of land we entreat you o lord that through the works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleansed from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your heart we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god that is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeling of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] dreams [Music] foreign [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be guided into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church is spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francisco socrates leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at me spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already destinies of nations let us pray together deliver us lord from coercion intimidation violence and terrorism from dishonesty lies in all distortion of truth from bribery wrath and all conspiracy for fraud from gullibility to the deceptive and blightness of perspective from threats intimidation and perverse language let us pray together hear us lord that conscience may always be our ultimate norm that the common good may always be our highest goal that human dignity may be respected at all time the the poor and the weak may always have the priority [Music] that care for creation may never be ignored that solidarity may guide the path of peace and development the genuine fear of god and love of neighbors may guide those who seek public office let us pray shepherd of souls and savior of the nations politics is your gift to us i call to serve others and grow in holiness guide our politics as a guide our lives may our political engagement for voters and candidates bring glory to your loving name and help us grow in holiness forever and ever amen let us pray may the sacrament we have received to stain us oh lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord amen foreign so now is the time to return to the lord to return to the church to return to the mass to return to receiving holy communion we have so much to be grateful to god for that 19 the lord be with you and with your spirit may the almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen the mass has ended let us look for jesus in one another thanks
